W
elcome to the March issue of the Dell Directory. It’s so good to see the first signs of spring out and about, and to be able look forward to the clocks going forward at the end of March. If you’re keen to get those spring cleaning and decorating jobs done around the house or to make a start on the outdoors jobs, try and use local businesses to help you whenever possible. The local charity piece this month is an appeal from the Edinburgh charity The Rock Trust, who are looking for people in the area who could make their spare-room available as stop-gap accommodation for young people who find themselves in need of emergency overnight accommodation. Turn to p8 for more information, and if you or anyone you know may be able to help, do get in touch with them. This year is a special one for me as it’s the 10th year of publishing, and we’ll be celebrating plenty! We’re holding a fundraising Spring Ball in May in aid of the School Bank West Lothian. All the details are on p38 of this magazine, so if you’re looking for a glam night out in aid of a good cause, we’ll be delighted to see you! With a book competition, a look at the history of the reservoirs, all our usual columns plus a new column from Suzanne Green (Notes from a Small Village), I hope you enjoy the magazine this month.

Nightstop:
“It can be the one thing that saves them from sleeping on the streets” Sometimes, a meal and a bed for a couple of nights is all that is needed to help a young person get back on track. Or at least to stop them from sliding into homelessness. Nightstop, a programme delivered in Edinburgh by the Rock Trust, provides just that via the homes of volunteers hosts in the city who make a spare room available for up to 14 nights for a young person who, for various reasons, needs emergency accommodation. “We receive referrals for a whole range of reasons,” says Mark Fieldhouse, Nightstop Development Worker with the Rock Trust. “We help young people who find themselves in crisis, in many cases due to breakdown in family relationships. They need safe, friendly accommodation while we help them work on longer-term
8 | THE DELL
solutions.” Whilst there is a good number of host families in Edinburgh, more are needed to cover all parts of the city.
The Rock Trust, established in 1991 in Edinburgh in response to youth homelessness, helps young people aged 16 – 25 by providing advice and support, keeping their education on track, finding work, a drop-in centre in Edinburgh and a range of other services. Nightstop is the emergency element of this, where a young person in crisis can call a helpline and is provided with a safe place immediately, while longer-term supported accommodation is arranged, or until they can return home.
@KonectMagazines
Emergency hostel accommodation is available in the city, but young people often report negative experiences such as being exposed to drug and alcohol abuse, and other options can be scary and disruptive. A report in 2016 by Depaul UK, the organisation which set up the Nightstop programme, reported that young people “experienced very dangerous situations in their attempts to stay off the streets, including staying with strangers while constantly in fear of assault, lodging with an uncle addicted to hard drugs, going to all-night parties with predatory men or suggesting ‘sleepovers’ to school friends simply to find a place to stay.” By staying in a host’s home instead, they are much more likely to get the time-out and breathing space that they need in a safe environment, and to move on to a positive resolution to their issues. Emily’s story: When Emily was 16 her living circumstances were “not the best,” and she says when her mum kicked her out of the house she went to the council. The council put Emily in touch with the Rock Trust who arranged a host for her. The first evening “the hosts knocked on my door and asked
if I was hungry, and if I wanted to eat in my room or with them. I went and sat at the table. They had good banter. It was good. I tried to help them cleaning up but they said no and for me to sit and rest. ….I stayed 4 nights before going home. While I was there I realised that I’m my own person and needed to stop doing everything for everyone else. I realised that talking to good people makes you feel better and that I wasn’t such a mess up as I thought I was.”
Could you be a host? As a volunteer host, you are fully supported with training and support from the Rock Trust. You provide an evening meal and a bedroom for the young person, and you let them know which parts of the house they can use – just like you would in a normal bed and breakfast arrangement. (They are not at home during the day as they are out in education, work or being supported by the Rock Trust). Your expenses are covered. If you are interested in helping, please see www.rocktrust.org/nightstop/ or email admin@rocktrust.org. Host families are needed in Edinburgh and West Lothian.
Do you or a young person you know need emergency accommodation? HEALTH
What is Glaucoma? Glaucoma is a group of diseases of the optic nerve. Nerve axons leaving the eye die, causing blind spots in your vision. It is estimated that 2% of the population have Glaucoma. What are the symptoms? The early stages of Glaucoma are generally symptom free. An optometrist can detect the first signs of Glaucoma using a variety of sensitive tests. What is the cause? In around 70% of cases, raised pressure inside of the eye is thought to be the primary cause. However, around 30% of people with Glaucoma have normal eye pressure. Another theory is disruption of blood supply to the optic nerve. What are the risk factors? Family history, ethnicity, age, increased eye pressure, short
sightedness, ocular trauma, vascular disease, migraine, Raynaud’s and high longsightedness are all risk factors. Is it treatable? The earlier Glaucoma is detected, the better the chance of managing it well. The aim of treatment is to slow the progression down, by reducing eye pressure. This gives the best possible chance of maintaining good sight. Where can I find out more? The International Glaucoma Association have an excellent website: www.glaucoma-assocation.com This article was contributed by Jonathan Jennett of Clearvue Opticians, 60 Bryce Road, Currie, EH14 5LD.

Loneliness
Older people are especially vulnerable to loneliness. This can have a serious effect not just on mental health but can also cause a decline in physical health and wellbeing. Loneliness can be caused by a variety of reasons - leaving work, death of spouse and friends, poor health and reduced mobility. If you are lonely it can be hard to reach out but here are some tips • Smile and start conversations with people • Invite friends and family to visit • Keep in touch by phone, email or Skype (the library runs classes in basic computer skills) • Get involved in local community activities • Volunteer, do a class or join a club As a Registered Nurse based in Colinton I offer a reduced rate for Companionship Care and would be happy to accompany you to the shops, for appointments and to social activities. Physiotherapy – Could It Help You? Have you ever tried to explain your job to a seven year old? Children of this age are full of questions and when asked recently what it is I do at work I tried to explain that Physiotherapists help people who are sore to get better and to move properly. This got me thinking about the history of my Profession. History - The Society of Trained Masseuses was founded by 4 nurses back in 1894 to protect their reputation from those who used the word “massage” as a euphemism for entirely different services! This group grew and then merged in 1920 to become the Chartered Society of Massage and Medical Gymnastics. 1920 was also the year that the society gained its Royal Charter and was the first year that men were allowed to join. In 1940, to better reflect the scope of its work, the society became known by its current name – the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy or CSP.
The history of the CSP, with its roots in massage and exercise, reflect the core skills of Physios today – manual therapy with “hands on” treatment to stretch and mobilise soft tissues and exercise therapy to improve strength and fitness. Also, a large part we what we do is education on what the injury / problem is with advice both on how to get better and how to prevent it from happening again. We help to maintain good health for people of all ages by promoting recovery after illness or injury, by helping patients stay in work, and by promoting independent living for as long as possible. In addition to core skills, Physiotherapists can gain additional skills such as joint injection therapy, independent prescribing rights and acupuncture. DOES IT WORK? - The answer to that is a resounding “yes”. There have been many 14 | THE DELL
studies that show that money spent on Physiotherapy is both a clinically effective and a cost effective way of helping employees back to work after injury. Rapid access to musculoskeletal physiotherapy reduces time off work and prevents a new problem from becoming a chronic and long lasting condition. The statistics for falls are horrendous with 1 in 3 adults over 65 and 1 in 2 adults over 80 in the UK falling every year. Up to 25% of these falls will result in a serious injury which will cost the NHS approximately £2.3 billion per year. Individual exercise programmes from a Physio have been shown to reduce the incidence of falls by 32%, a huge saving in financial terms but an even more important saving in reduced pain and suffering for the patients involved and their families. Physiotherapists have many skills to help you get better – to reduce pain, to become fitter and stronger, and to have a better quality of life. A lot of information to tell a 7 year old! More information can be found on www.csp.org.uk but if you have a specific question, please call us on 0131-337-5135 and the Physios of McNaughton Physiogrange will be happy to explain if and how they can help. LYNNE’S COLUMN
A trilogy set in Ancient Egypt and modern Edinburgh, what’s not to love? Lynne Arnot reconnects with an old friend who is now an author, and has organised a chance for a Dell reader to win one of her books! It’s a sure sign of getting older when the distant past starts to seem not that distant and can generally be recalled clearer than what happened yesterday. I’m sure I’m not alone in this feeling but I find it quite heart-warming - I’m a sentimental old fool at times and enjoy sharing stories about the past with my children. Current technology makes it easier than ever before to recall events from yesteryear and reconnect with people we’ve lost touch with along the way. In recent years I’ve been lucky enough to re-find friends and family via social media and it’s amazing how you can virtually pick up where you left off even after several years. I recently tracked down an old school friend who is now a published author. She was working on her third book in a fascinating fictional trilogy set in Edinburgh involving past lives and links to ancient Egypt. Being a bit old school in my reading habits (eschewing a Kindle in favour of a good old-fashioned paper copy!) I was delighted to be able to locate her first book - A Second Path - via Colinton library. I now need to get the second one under my belt before we next meet for coffee when I look forward to buying the third book - The Soul Behind the Mask* -directly from the author - get me!
Meeting with my friend started a chain of events that has seen more of my own memories come flooding back. I joined the Lost Edinburgh group on Facebook and am loving trawling through the daily photographs and memories that people are 18 | THE DELL
sharing. I went to see Robert Blomfield’s Edinburgh Street Photography exhibition at the City Art Centre and loved showing my kids how parts of Edinburgh used to look. Even where my friend and I grew up in Polwarth there is currently a bit of the past on display. A former shop is being renovated thus exposing the original signage which has sparked memories of heading to Harrison Park or Meggetland on sunny days with my Mum and dropping into the shop for an ice lolly en-route.
It’s true that we could all do with being more “present” these days so I’m not suggesting that we should wallow in the past or get so caught up in nostalgia that we pine for the good old days to the detriment of enjoying the here and now. But I do think we should often indulge in a wee trip down memory lane. Reconnecting with the past can reignite old friendships, re-invigorate old hobbies and interests and is great activity for the brain. Happy reminiscing Lynne lives in Colinton with her husband and two children. She dreams of making a living from writing when she grows up, but mostly just tries to avoid growing up! @KonectMagazines
Competition ! How’s your Egyptology?
To be in with a chance of winning a signed copy of The Soul Behind the Mask, you may need to do some investigative work to answer this question: Who was Nefertiti’s husband?’ Please email your answer, along with your full name, to win@konect.scot by 15th March 2019. Winner will be chosen at random after the closing date, and informed via the email address used to enter.

TECHNOLOGY
Computer Security is more important than ever as the scammers get more sophisticated and ever more ingenious in their quest to get your data, and in some cases, your money. Here are five simple ways to protect you and your personal data:
Virus Protection - Every computer should have decent virus protection as it is your first form of defence against the spam / virus attacks. Even a free version is better than nothing; but we do recommend purchasing some commercial software to protect your devices (typically around £15 - £20 per annum). Fraudulent Email Links - There’s recently been an increase in the number of e-mail scams which involve people trying to steal your information by getting you to click fraudulent links. An easy way to avoid falling for ‘spoofed URLs’ is to make sure any links in an e-mail actually point to the location they appear to be linking to in the name of the link itself. The location of any link shows up in the taskbar of your e-mail application or online e-mail service when you hover over it. If you’re unsure, it’s best to err on the side of caution and go directly to the website. Watch for recent fake emails from BT, Microsoft Office 365 & Gmail asking for you to reset your password. Telephone scams - The call will generally be from an anonymous number and they may claim to be from your bank, telephone company or internet provider. They will claim that they need to move money to a safe account or that your computer is having problems; neither of which are true. If unsure, ask to phone them back and then search for a legitimate number. @KonectMagazines
Passwords - Most people use the same password for everything. This is an easy way to have your data compromised as one breached account can lead fraudsters to any other account. Some large companies have faced massive data breaches over the years which have led to the compromising of your personal data (Facebook, Gmail, LinkedIn, Sony). Look at www.haveibeenpwned.com to query whether one of your e-mails has been involved in a breach. This doesn’t necessarily mean that one of your accounts has been hacked but it’s certainly knowledge you can use. Using a password manager is a handy way to keep track of all your passwords. Passwords should preferably be eight or more characters and a mix of letters number and symbols. Backups - When was the last time you backed up your data? If your computer stopped tomorrow you could lose everything – the photo library, an allimportant Word document or your entire music collection. With the advent of cloud computing data can be automatically backed up to a secure location on the Internet from as little as £5 per month. Watching geese skid-landing on the water’s surface, it is easy to imagine that Harlaw Reservoir is as old as the nearby Pentland Hills. But it is a new-born baby in geological terms. The peaks of the Pentland Hills are made of sandstone 400 million years old and of volcanic rock from the Devonian age. The reservoir is merely one hundred and seventy one years old. Harlaw Reservoir was designed and constructed by an engineer working for the Edinburgh Water Company (EWC). It took five years to build and was completed in 1848. Harlaw Reservoir’s larger sister, Threipmuir Reservoir, was created at the same time. Intended as a source of public water supply for Edinburgh, the reservoirs fulfilled this purpose for many years, but neither does so any more. Instead, nowadays they contain upstream flood water. Together, they help to prevent the Water of Leith bursting its banks. It might seem a fairly simple task to dig a large hole to capture rain and river water. But a ‘pond’ the size of a reservoir needs careful planning and design. The type of rock below, the contours of the hills above, and the natural routes of water flow must all be considered. And, as any small child digging on the beach knows, once a hole fills with water, it is only a matter of time before the sides collapse, unless they are well shored up. Civil engineer, James Jardine (1776 – 1858) was the person entrusted by EWC to build Harlaw Reservoir. He came from a farming family, but while studying at The University of Edinburgh, was persuaded by his teacher John Playfair to pursue engineering. Jardine had an enviable career. At a time when Edinburgh was a hotbed of scientific and technological progress, Jardine was able to collaborate with the leading people of his day. He provided engineering support for many of William Henry Playfair’s architectural projects. (W. H. Playfair was the architect who designed the National Gallery of Scotland, The Royal College of Surgeons, and many elegant town houses, such as those on Royal Terrace and Regent Terrace.) Jardine also worked with Thomas Telford on many projects, including the famous Menai Straits 30 | THE DELL
bridge in Wales. Jardine assisted by calculating the strength of chains used in its construction. Over the course of their collaboration, Jardine and Telford became firm friends. Jardine was not merely an assistant on major projects led by others, now better remembered. He was a prolific engineer in his own right. Jardine built several reservoirs, and designed major water supply schemes, including that of Glasgow. He worked on parts of the Union Canal, surveyed railway routes, and built bridges, roads and harbours. Leith Harbour was one of Jardine’s developments. When you consider that Harlaw Reservoir is one of this impressive list of engineering achievements, it seems to gain a greater significance. Harlaw and Threipmuir Reservoirs are fed by Bavelaw Burn. This stream flows from the Northern slopes of the Pentland Hills, passing by moorland, sheep and cattle and then through both reservoirs on its way to Malleny Mills. There it joins the Water of Leith at Balerno and continues through the City of Edinburgh along steep gorges carved by ancient glaciers in the sedimentary rock (at Colinton, Craiglockhart and Dean) before finally flowing into the Firth of Forth at Leith. The river once provided energy for numerous water-powered mills along its route, dating back as far as the 13th century. There were about 70 mills in its hey day. These days, however, there are no mills to impede its flow, and the Water of Leith could do serious damage to Edinburgh and the surrounding villages if it were allowed to flood. Harlaw and Threipmuir Reservoirs provide an essential flood-water safety net, containing any excess water at a safe distance from the city. But with the river, they also provide fishing grounds and a home for abundant @KonectMagazines

wildlife. Harlaw Reservoir is stocked with rainbow trout, Threipmuir Reservoir with brown trout (which also live wild in the Water of Leith). Both reservoirs’ fish stocks are managed by the Malleny Angling Association for recreational fishing, and the natural stock of brown trout in the Water of Leith is topped up by Edinburgh City Council. Over a thousand new fish are added each year, these additional fish being genetically modified to prevent them breeding with their wild counterparts. But as well as trout, you can also find eels, minnows, sticklebacks, stone loach, bullhead and lampreys. For those interested in river angling, public fishing begins at Balerno, and continues along the length of the river to Leith. Balerno to Slateford Bridge is reserved for fly fishing only, but beyond Slateford Bridge, bait fishing is also permitted (maggots, worms and… sweetcorn, apparently!). A single permit, issued by the City of Edinburgh’s Culture & Leisure Department, is available from Post Offices along the river, and from the Water of Leith Visitor Centre at Slateford. It is free of charge and covers the whole fishing season (Apr 1st to Sept 30th). Fly fishing within Harlaw and Threipmuir Reservoirs is managed by Malleny Angling Association. The club holds the fishing rights to both reservoirs, and promotes and protects fishing there. The fishing season for Harlaw and Threipmur opens on 1st April 2019, and permits and more information is available online at www.mallenyangling.com. There are periodic minor engineering works to maintain the reservoirs, and recent works to improve the path round Harlaw Reservoir saw the widening and surface improvement of a narrow bridge, thanks to the financial support of various local organisations. Perhaps, in the dead of night, James Jardine is tempted to revisit his reservoir, and cast a ghostly engineering eye over the latest works! This article was written by Emma Merchant. The Stranglehold of Debt In Scotland, the average household debt is around £12,000. Most of us live just one pay cheque away from financial crisis. This is partly because our culture encourages us to live on credit rather than learning how to save.
This is made worse by unscrupulous lenders or Payday Loan companies who give needy customers credit but charge interest at exploitative rates. This is one of the sad symptoms of a consumerist capitalist culture. Locals are justifiably outraged by these sorts of companies. They do not belong in a nation which believes in compassion and justice. Thankfully the Scottish Government are tackling child poverty with new referral pathways which are being created under the Child Poverty Act. These pathways will enable Local Authorities and Health Services to work together. This should mean that vulnerable families can get access to the resources they need by, for example, the location of welfare officers in health centres and hospitals. These Welfare Officers will be able to give advice about Social Security and signpost clients to other services. One of the services available to help people manage unmanageable debt is Christians Against Poverty. Christians Against Poverty (CAP) is a UK wide Debt Counselling charity which has 600 services across the UK. By the time clients seek CAP’s help an alarming 35% of them have contemplated suicide. The shame and feelings of helplessness mean people hide their debt for an average @KonectMagazines
of 3 years before coming to us or another Debt Advice charity. During this time, the debt can spiral out of control and people can face losing their homes. Research done by the Money Advice Service estimates that only 11% of people struggling with debt are seeking help.
Emma Jackson, Head of CAP Scotland (pictured) says, “We want people to hear that there is help at hand. No-one should face these problems alone, our free, non-judgemental services are available to everyone. CAP can help you conquer the debt mountain you are facing. We will negotiate with creditors and create a budget which will help you become debt free. We don’t pay your debts for you, but rather help you with a payment and savings plans that will allow you to see the light at the end of the tunnel. At head office, our FCA-accredited professionals will liaise with the creditors on your behalf and create a repayment plan which is realistic and manageable. Additionally, locally you will benefit from our teams of debt coaches, befrienders and money education that will help you get your life back on track.” The CAP Debt Centre in Wester Hailes is one of more than 50 services across Scotland. NOTES FROM A
l l a m S illage V
I’ve lived in Balerno since 1991, and raised a family here. So it’s home. But Illinois, the American state where I grew up, is also home. I’m a transplant – uprooted from the rich, dark farmland in the Midwest, and replanted in harder, rockier UK soil. At first I wondered whether I would thrive in my new environment. But over the years I’ve adjusted and adapted, while continuing to be myself. I feel at home here, but growing up in a place with different customs means that I don’t always see things in the same way as my neighbour. “I wonder what language that is,” I thought, as I sat on a train headed for Glasgow. It was my first such adventure since we’d moved to Balerno, and I was enjoying it. But the conversation further down the carriage puzzled me. I just couldn’t work out what foreign language the men were speaking.
And then it happened. There came a word or two that sounded a bit like … English. I listened harder. Something else was familiar. I couldn’t believe it. This was English – but not as I knew it! This must be Glaswegian English!
So far I was used to my husband’s Lancashire accent, and also the way people sounded in southeast London. I had volunteered with a charity there, expecting to return home after a year. Somehow I hadn’t registered that cultural adjustment would be involved – so I got hit hard! It was the mid-1980s and life in London was so different from life in West Chicago. Buying fruit and vegetables was a shock. No more leisurely Saturday morning supermarket browsing for me! I wasn’t like my fellow shoppers: smartly dressed women with little wicker baskets on their arm. They marched into the shop like soldiers, demanding “a pound of Coxes” or “two pounds of carrots”. Then they marched out again. @KonectMagazines
And I was cold all the time. Although I‘d grown up contending with bitterly cold winters, it was easy to get warm once I was inside again. But Britain’s damp cold was something new. My coffee and tea intake skyrocketed, and I dragged my duvet round the house with me. Halfway through that first year I met Andy, and the following spring he proposed. I said yes, but there was a provision – even if everyone we knew lived in a fridge, Andy must ensure our house was warm. He agreed. A few years later a job change brought us to Scotland, and Andy remembered our deal. As we looked for a place to call home, I couldn’t understand why he wasn’t interested in Edinburgh’s beautiful old tenement dwellings. “High ceilings,” he said. “It would be very hard to keep these warm enough for you.” We bought a home in Balerno, and a neighbour commented that the bedrooms were “not big enough to swing a cat”. Fortunately, we didn’t have a cat, so I knew we’d be all right. To be continued next issue … Notes from a small village is contributed by Suzanne Green. Suzanne, a freelance writer/editor and writes regularly for The Dell Directory. She is married to Andy and they have two adult daughters. THE DELL | 39

Delicious warm puddings
Mi n i
ra nge
& C h o c o la t e e s Ca k
These lovely little citrus cakes take no time to make and are a delicious sweet treat. Ingredients: • 225g unsalted butter, softened, plus extra for greasing • 12 mini chocolate cookies • 225g golden caster sugar • 225g self-raising flour • ½ tsp baking powder • 4 medium eggs, beaten • Juice and zest of 1 orange • 100g milk chocolate, melted, plus extra grated, to serve • Orange slices, to serve (optional)
Tip:
These make delicious warm puddings – instead of leaving to cool and dipping in the chocolate, serve warm drizzled with the melted chocolate and with a dollop of whipped cream or crème fraiche.
40 | THE DELL
Method: 1. Preheat the oven to 180C, fan 160F, gas mark 4. Use the extra butter to thoroughly grease the holes in a 12-hole muffin tray. Line the base of each hole with a circle of baking paper. Drop a mini chocolate cookie into each hole. 2. Place the butter, sugar, flour, baking powder, eggs, orange juice and zest in a large mixing bowl. Beat with a hand-held electric whisk for 3-4 minutes until smooth and creamy. 3. Spoon the mixture evenly into the holes in the muffin tray. Bake in the preheated oven for 18-20 minutes until risen, golden and springy to the touch. Cool in the tin for a few minutes then run a small palette knife around each cake to loosen and turn out on a wire rack. Leave to cool completely. 4. Dip the top of each orange sponge in melted chocolate and place on a wire rack set over a baking sheet. Leave for 30 minutes or until set. Serve topped with grated chocolate and orange slices, if liked.

BRIDGE COLUMN
Tricky Bidding Conundrum
You are sitting East holding this: K J 6 4 2 4 K 9 4 3 K Q 6 Dealer South passes. Your partner East bids 1 . North overcalls 1 . You bid 1 . South passes. Partner bids 2 . North passes. What is your next bid? There are several (semi) plausible answers, but which is best? SOLUTION 1. 2 is best. If partner bids 3 , follow with 3 . 4th suit forcing. Partner will likely bid 3NT with something in hearts. 2. 3 NT is a good pragmatic solution if 4th suit forcing is not in your repertoire. 3. 3 . Showing support for partner’s good club suit. 4. 5 . My bid and not a good one (having no aces) despite seeming justified by the Losing Trick Count, which may explain why it went down giving us a bad result on that board. (Apologies to partner.) 5. 3 . Not a good bid because it suggests a diamond shortage. Many thanks to professional Douglas Piper for his help in solving this puzzle. The Bridge Column is contributed by John Samson. John is a member of the Pentland Bridge Club and the Balerno Bridge Club.
