MESSAGE FROM THE EDITIOR You might notice The Dell Directory looks a little different this month. That’s because it’s under new management – Ann, who has done a marvellous job of producing this magazine for 10 years, has decided to move on to other things and handed the reins to me. I shall do my best to keep up the good work! If you live in Kingsknowe this will be the first month you receive the Dell Directory as we have expanded the distribution to cover include this area. Do let us know what you think if it. I looked into the history of Redhall House recently, including why it is called Redhall – see the local history article on pages 8-9. Other articles include a well-known walk in the Dell which I enjoyed last month, and some information on an initiative called Dementia Friendly Pentlands. Thanks for reading The Dell Directory and supporting local businesses and organisations.

LOCAL HISTORY
The Red

Home to a diplomat involved in nation-shaping moments in Scottish history; seige and destruction by Oliver Cromwell’s canons; gracious country estate with beautiful pleasure gardens: the history of Redhall Estate beside the Water of Leith in Craiglockhart shapes the environment today and provides various points of interest on a walk along the Water of Leith. On a small promontory where the Water of Leith meanders in a c-shape, a castle was built in the 13th century, using local red sandstone – Red Hall. Protected on three sides by sheer drops down to the river, it was accessible on only one side, making it a good defensive position. Its early history is lost in the mists of time but in 1533 it was acquired by a certain Adam Otterburn, a man whose name is not well-known but who, behind the scenes, played an influential role in shaping Scottish politics during the turbulent years of the Rough Wooing. Much scheming and politicking was doubtless done on this site - the entertaining of Sir George Douglas of the Red Douglas family is mentioned in correspondence from the time, during the struggle for the guardianship of the young James V. The castle passed through marriage to a family named Hamilton, who were in possession of it when Oliver 8 | THE DELL DIRECTORY
Cromwell and his forces arrived in 1650. They set up their canons on the other side of the Water of Leith, and laid siege to the castle. Sir James Hamilton, with 60 men, held his castle for two days until they ran out of ammunition and Cromwell’s troops got close enough to blow it up. It was never rebuilt and lay in ruins until the estate was purchased by George Inglis of Auchendinny a century later. George commissioned the building of Redhall House nearby, using stones from the ruined castle. (The site of the castle today is still just an empty rough grassy area between Redhall House and the Water of Leith). The reclaimed stone was covered with harling. Inglis’ project also included a stable block, a doo’cot, a walled garden and ornamental gardens. Redhall ceased to be a graceful country home in the first part of the 20th century. It was purchased by the Edinburgh Corporation and in 1944
became a children’s home. Two other schools for children with additional needs were built in the grounds, and latterly it was used as a staff training centre for the Ciry of Edinburgh council. But it has now been empty and boarded up for almost 10 years. The grounds immediately around the house have been developed into a housing estate. The developers renovated Inglis’ doo’cot, an interesting feature of which is Adam Otterburn’s 16th century armourial panel built into one side of it, which Inglis salvaged from the castle. The stable blocks have also been incorporated into the housing development. Sadly though there are still no plans for the restoration or conversion of the big house itself. SIR ADAM OF OTTERBURN AND POLITICKING AT REDHALL He was reputed to be “the wisest man in Scotland” during the turbulent years of Rough Wooing; Adam Otterburn
was a Common Clerk in Edinburgh, Provost of the City seven times, Lord of the Council for Civil Causes and a Judge in the Court of Session; he sat in the Scots Parliament from 1523 and in the Privy Council from 1524; he was King’s Advocate (to James V) from 1524-1538, and was sent on diplomatic missions to England at least 14 times. He was secretary to Mary of Guise and Regent Arran. He was involved border peace treaty negotiations in an attempt to stop border raids. He played a key role in the struggle between Arran and Douglas for the guardianship of the young James V, and when James died, he was involved in marriage propositions for James’ baby daughter Mary, Queen of Scots. On Henry VIII’s scheme to marry his son Edward to Mary, Otterburn is reported to have said to the English Ambassador: “If your lad were a las, and our las were a lad, be so ernest in
this mateir, and could you be content that our lad should mary your las and so be King of England? Well, if you had the las and we the lad we could be well content with it, but I cannot beleve that your naycon coulde agree to have a Scotte to be kyng of England. And lykewise I assure you that our naycon, being a stout naycon, will never agree to have an Englishman to be king of Scotland. And though the whole nobility of the realm would consent unto it. yet our common people, and the stones in the street would rise and rebel against it.” Otterburn died after an assault in Edinburgh by a servant of Regent Arran on 3 July 1548, “sore hurt on the head and his servant slain at his heels.” A family from Annestoun near Lanark were charged with treason for his murder.
REDHALL WALLED GARDEN: Scottish Association for Mental Health George Inglis’ beautiful 18th century walled garden, next to the Water of Leith below the house, is now owned by the Scottish Assocuation for Mental Health (SAMH). There is a beautiful herb garden, a sunken garden, ponds and a replica iron age roundhouse. SAMH offers training here in horticulture, conservation, maintenance skills, ITC/admin and life skills for people with mental health problems, supporting 50-55 trainees at any given time. The garden is open to the public MondayFriday 9am-4pm to drop by and enjoy the garden, purchase plants, compost and woodchip.

VILLAGE PEOPLE
A librarian’s life Calum Brooks is Team Leader for our local libraries (Colinton, Currie and Balerno). Previously he ran a youth hostel and owned a video shop. He loves donuts and once enjoyed one that tasted like Irn Bru. Originally from Fife, Calum Brooks came to Edinburgh 20 years ago for university and decided to stay. At the start of year two of his history of art course, Calum learned he would have to study a foreign language. This discovery resulted in a swift change to ancient history and classical archeology. “A story-based course totally fascinated me,” he says, “though I never had a desire to pursue work in that field.” After leaving uni, Calum ran a hostel for the Scottish Youth Hostel Association. Later he had his own video shop in Marchmont, specialising in independent (art house) cinema. His first job in a library was in Newington, but he moved to our area about two and a half years ago. As Team Leader Calum spends his time engaging with the community, running events, manning the front desk, doing admin work and ensuring the staff have the support they need to do their jobs well. “Basically, it’s about keeping everything running smoothly,” he says. Calum believes his job is a good fit for him, though it has been quite a learning curve. “I have become much more practical,” he says, explaining how he has acquired skills in leading children’s craft sessions. He has also learned that you don’t necessarily

have to have a good singing voice to lead a sing-along for little ones. “The first time I led ‘Book Bugs’, I started singing and the children in the first row burst into tears!” he recalls. “Fair enough, I guess. Since then I have learned that the most important thing is to have a confident and enthusiastic attitude.” In his free time, Calum likes to play football – “basically a kick-about in the Meadows”. However, his main source of exercise is walking, and when it’s a pleasant evening, he walks home from work to Morningside. “I used to listen to music on the way,” he says, “but it’s not dignified to walk along dancing, so I’ve switched to podcasts.” Unlike his father, Calum says he will never wear a wig to hide his baldness. His preferred form of relaxation is an hour-long bath – no, not with candles and a glass of wine. Calum would rather have a cup of tea, a donut and his choice of music playing in the corner. He is a man who enjoys unusual tastes, like the Japanese watermelon-flavoured KitKat he once ate. His taste in films is hard to tie down; he describes it as “low brow or quasi high brow”. As you might guess, he likes reading, especially the works of Haruki Murakami, Douglas Coupland and Charles Stross, among others. Calum’s hopes for the future include acquiring wisdom…and perhaps a donut maker too. The Village People column is contributed by Suzanne Green. Suzanne, a local freelance writer/ editor, writes regularly for Konect. She is married to Andy and they have two adult daughters.

WALK
COLINTON AND CRAIGLOCKHART DELLS
This area of woodland trails covers both sides of the Water of Leith from Colinton to Slateford. Steeped in history, it’s also home to a lot of wildife and flora, and with well-maintained paths is ideal for either a brisk circular walk or an aimless meander. There are many spots you can get into the Dell, but for this walk I chose to start from Bridge Road next to Colinton Inn and walk down the “Long Steps” - a very old stairway linking the main part of the village to the parish church in the Dell below. It’s the start point for a trail commemorating the association of the author Robert Louis Stevenson with the village of Colinton. Stevenson’s maternal grandfather, Lewis Balfour, was the parish minister here from around 1823 and Stevenson is known to have spent many childhood summers with his grandfather at Colinton Manse. There are some of his poems on plaques as you go down the steps. At the bottom of the Long Steps, the road crosses the Water of Leith. You’ll see a bronze statue on your right of a young Robert Louis Stevenson with his Skye terrier. Walk past Colinton graveyard and you’re into the Dell itself and right next to the river. Stay on the path near the river (rather than branching up left onto the old railway line walkway) which fairly soon takes you over the river at Colinton Weir, and you’re walking between the river and a mill chase that formerly fed Redhall Mill – just one of many mills that were on this stretch of the river in its industrial heydey. There were a few signs of spring when I did this walk at the end of April, the banks were covered with wild garlic and the Dell just about to burst into spring life. The next path junction is at Kates Mill. I took the path to the left here and crossed the bridge to carry on towards Slateford on the other side of the river. Shortly you pass through what appears to be a clearing in 22 | THE DELL DIRECTORY
the wood, but is in fact the site of the former Bogs Mill. There was a mill on this site from as early as 1598, and in 1735 the first banknotes manufactured in Scotland were produced here - 20 shilling notes for the Bank of Scotland – apparently under the watchful eye of “a picquet of soldiers mounted guard in the cottage on the bank above.” Part of the path of the mill lade is still visible in the grass. Carrying on you pass the old stone Bogs Bridge on your right. Stay on the same side of the river though; you walk alongside an allotment site and come to a walled garden. This is Redhall Walled Garden, 18th century kitchen gardens for Redhall House and still used as gardens today – now run by the Scottish Association for Mental Health (www.samh.org.uk) who offer training here (more on this site in a future issue). Cross the river over the small wooden bridge that you come to, and turn left. You’ll shortly pass an odd little stone building, which is one of two “ladies grottos” in this area. It’s thought they were built about 1830 for the owner of Craiglockhart House to provide shelter for ladies whilst walking in the Dell. Around 300 metres further you arrive at the Lanark Road. Just across the road is the Water of Leith Convervation Centre which has a visitor centre (open daily 10am4pm) and small cafe where you can stop for a drink before heading back to Colinton. It’s possible to do this walk as a circular route going from Colinton to Slateford on one side of
the river and back on the other side. You can vary it by taking some sections on the Balerno-Edinburgh old train line walkway which runs parallel for some of the way, and you can pop up and down from railway to riverside at various points. Back at Colinton, before you climb the Long Steps, pay a visit to the “Swing Cafe” at the Parish Church. It’s open Monday to Friday from 10am to 2pm. The name is a reference to Robert Louis Stevenson’s poem The Swing, said to have been inspired by the swing he played on as a child here, which hung from the yew tree you can see in front of the building. See www.colinton-parish.com/the-swing-cafe

COMMUNITY
Kay Lati
mer
With Dementia Awareness Week (29th May - 4th June) it’s a good time to look at the work being done to make our local communities more dementia friendly. Dementia Friendly Pentlands aims to work with the community to support people with dementia and those close to them, to help them remain active and engaged with their communities in a meaningful way. A social group for people with dementia and their carers, PALM (People with Advanced Loss of Memory) Café, was set up in Balerno in August 2013. “The Café continues to thrive” says Kay Latimer, Pastoral Care Coordinator at Balerno Parish Church. “Nine months after its start a Dementia Friendly Communities Project was initiated, involving local community councils, churches, libraries, and schools, with representatives from many health and social agencies.” “We’re concerned about primary care,” says Kay, “which means educating people in the community about dementia. “We support delivering information through Currie Library, health fairs, doctors’ surgeries and other opportunities.” The aim is that everyone will have some understanding of dementia and will be able to be supportive and helpful to someone living with the condition. “One thing we would like to see is quieter queues made available in shops. Sometimes a person with dementia needs a little extra time counting their money or responding to a question.” One particularly helpful leaflet, produced by the City of Edinburgh Council, details “six little things” we can all do to help people with dementia. These include: learning the facts about the illness; being inclusive; speaking kindly to and about those living with the condition; not being afraid to start a conversation; being patient; and being a friend. 30 | THE DELL DIRECTORY
Highlights of Dementia Awareness Week include a talk by the “Music Detective”, Andy Lowndes, on Wednesday, 31 May. Andy is Deputy Chair of the music therapy charity Playlist for Life, founded by journalist Sally Magnusson. On Sunday, 28 May a special service will be held at Balerno Parish Church with a “Reminiscence” theme. In 2016 Dementia Friendly Pentlands was awarded runner up in the category “Best Dementia Friendly Community Initiative” at the Scottish Dementia Awards (www.sda.dementiascotland.org). This year the group is applying for funding through Life Changes Trust. “This would enable us to apply for charity status for Dementia Friendly Pentlands and to employ a development worker,” Kay explains. The dementia awareness work going on in our local communities is to be admired, and other people think so too. A spokesman from the City of Edinburgh Council’s Initiative on Dementia commented: “Dementia Friendly Pentlands is an inspiring example of how much a community can achieve with vision and determination. As well as making a huge impact in the local area by providing essential dementia services and support, the initiative has made a major contribution to Edinburgh’s city-wide effort to become a better place to live for people affected by dementia.” www.dementiafriendlypentlands.org.uk This community feature is contributed by Suzanne Green. Suzanne, a local freelance writer/editor, writes regularly for Konect. She is married to Andy and they have two adult daughters..

Recently I was lucky enough to be near Venice. There they understand food for summer. It should be light, full of flavour and pretty to look at on the plate. June is the time for a new range of vegetables: tender broad beans, British asparagus, peas and pea shoots, tiny new carrots and beetroot, some of which can be yellow. These look Good but taste just as earthy as their dark red cousins. If you have space for a couple of pots on the window sill you will have fresh herbs to go with these new season veggies. The three classics are chives, parsley and mint. If you buy the cut and come again plants in the supermarket you can pot them on into your own garden or planters and so long as you look after them you will have herbs all summer. If you have space, chervil, coriander and thyme would be good to add more interest to your cooking and salads. Be warned though - if mint is left to its own devices in the garden in a couple of years it will run all over the place. It’s best planted in a large pot with a broken bottom and this be sunk into the soil. This way the runners can not escape!
The Venetian dish that set me off thinking about the delights of summer was a lovely, light, mixed seafood lasagna.
MIXED SEAFOOD LASAGNA 50g plain flour (or enough to take up all the butter) 100g butter 1 pint whole milk Salt Pepper Ground nutmeg Saffron (if you have some) 400g/ 500g dry weight mixed seafood or your own selection of fish and shell fish Some smoked fish such as smoked salmon cuttings or hot roast salmon is good for added flavour Lasagna sheets - either green or white 100g fresh new peas (or frozen petite pois) Olive oil for greasing the dish Grated Parmesan cheese
MIXED SEAFOOD LASAGNA: A delightful Venetian dish
METHOD: Heat the oven to 160°C. Make a white sauce (it will be quite thin but the pasta will take it up): melt the butter in a heavy bottomed saucepan. Add the flour and mix over the heat till all the butter is absorbed. Cook for a moment or two but do not brown the flour. Add the milk little by little beating well so there are no lumps before you add more milk. Do this till all the milk is incorporated, season and cook for 2 or 3 minutes. Don’t let it stick or burn. Leave aside to cool. Oil a shallow oven proof dish to prevent the pasta sticking. Layer up the pasta and fish, adding a generous amount of white sauce each layer. Four layers of pasta should be enough. Finish with some white sauce and a good scattering of cheese. Bake for 30 minutes at 160°C or until it is bubbling and brown on top.
This is from a favourite old book “Cooking with Vegetables” by Maria Hanbury-Tenison. An unusual and lovely salad - a bit 1960’s but still good, and pretty to look at because the turmeric gives the veg a bright golden green glow. 450g shelled broad beans 4 small firm courgettes sliced thinly Dressing made with olive oil, white wine vinegar, Dijon mustard, salt and pepper 1 teaspoon ground turmeric 1 table spoon full each chopped parsley and chives 6 thin rashers bacon dry fried till crisp METHOD: Put the beans into a pan of boiling water, cook for 4 minutes, add the courgettes and boil for another 4 minutes till just tender. Drain well and add the dressing and the turmeric. Mix well leave to cool. Add the chopped herbs, mix again and then scatter the crumbled bacon on top. Good with hot new whole boiled potatoes and an omelette for supper. The monthly recipe and food notes are contributed by Anne Pinkerton. Anne is a local cook who believes that everybody can enjoy seasonal food and take pleasure in preparing meals for their friends and family. THE DELL DIRECTORY | 41

ENTRIES ARE OPEN...
The City of Edinburgh Running Festival (CERF) is back for its fifth year as online entries officially open, in what is Scotland’s foremost family running event. Taking place on 23rd June at Meggetland in Edinburgh, the festival uses a unique handicapping system which gives each competitor an equal chance of winning, no matter their age or ability. Online entries for the competition are now live and include the 800 metre race, the UK’s most lucrative race with a £1,000 prize for 1st place, and categories for both adults and youths. OrthoLink, a medical device company based in Edinburgh, is also sponsoring the 110m sprint race, offering £3,000 for 1st place, one of the largest prize money totals on the pro-running circuit. CERF adds to a calendar of professional running dating back almost 200 years including Jedburgh Games and The New Year Sprint. CERF however offers some of the highest prize money available in the UK. CERF Chairman, Graeme Armstrong said, “We are thrilled to be back for our fifth year. The City of Edinburgh Running Festival is a great opportunity for the whole family to get involved as we have races for all levels and distances. The 800m is the most lucrative of its kind in the UK and we anticipate an exciting race. Spectators always get behind the runners and cheer them on so it’s a wonderful atmosphere to be part of. Entries are now open so hopefully we see even more diverse competition this year and look forward to welcoming families, friends and all other fans of the sport along to the track in June.” Male and female athletes compete in youth, junior and open categories and, with over 20 events scheduled to take place over the evening, showcasing the finest of Scotland’s athletic ability. The competition programme on the night includes heats, semi-finals and the final, with prize money awarded to the finalists in each event.
