e’re always looking for somewhere different to walk, somewhere that has a feature of intrigue or a bit of history, so last month we checked a place near Airth – the Dunmore Pineapple. If you are headed Stirling direction it’s worth working in a detour to take a look; see the feature on pages 8-9. It’s exam results month and back to school at the end of the month, but for now summer is in full swing so if you’re back from holidays, or are not going away, there are plenty of things to do locally, see the What’s On page for a few suggestions. Our interiors column is about keeping the holiday vibe going if you’ve been away or wish you had! The sun happens to be shining as I write this, so the page on Under the Trees – Falkirk’s organisation for outdoor learning – seems particularly relevant, along with a wee piece on how to control kid’s screen time. But Under the Trees is about enjoying the outdoors all year round, whatever the weather and their classes and events run into the autumn too. If you are involved with a charity locally and would like your organisation featured in Konect, please contact me. Or if you’ve got something interesting and different going on that you’d like to share with the local community, do get in touch and we may be able to feature your story in an upcoming issue. We celebrate all things local. Thanks for reading Konect and supporting local businesses and organisations

Did you manage to get away for a break this summer yet? Maybe, like me, you’ve still got something planned to look forward to! One thing’s for sure though. When it’s time to come home and all that awaits you is a dusty house and a huge pile of unopened mail, that post holiday glow will disappear faster than the setting sun. Before you know it you’ll be back to reality. To dirty laundry, school runs and the minutiae of daily life. Wouldn’t it be great if there was a way to reproduce that holiday feeling at home? Maybe this is a ‘staycation’ year for you and you’re keen to create some of those feel good holiday vibes in your own place. Regardless of the reason, here are a few ideas to inspire you. Invest in some pretty pottery - Get yourself some tableware that reminds you of far flung shores. That fabulous sea-food place for instance. You know, the one where you sipped wine and watched the water sparkle among the boats bobbing in the harbour. Bring some home as souvenirs or snap up a few summer sale bargains.
Scent your space - Our sense of smell can trigger memories and emotions more than any of our other senses. So whether it’s a sweet smelling summer jasmine candle reminding you of travels to tropical shores or a spicy simmer pot conjuring up recollections of a rummage in a middle eastern souk, by using scent throughout your home you can whisk yourself off to distant lands in an instant. Coastal decor - Is the beach is your happy place? How about adding some coastal touches here and there. Add some sand, shells and a candle to a hurricane vase for an instant holiday vibe. There are lots of cute seaside themed accessories available these days. Incorporate some here and there and you’ll be ready for fish & chips and an ice cream on the pier - bliss! Plant palms - Even here in central Scotland it’s perfectly possible to give your garden a totally tropical look. Fill it with hardy palms (try Trachycarpus fortunei or Cordyline Australis), Hosta, Arum Lilies and Ferns, helping you create the perfect retreat - with no jet-lag! Now where did I put my Piña Colada? Lynn McMurray - Enthusiast of all things ‘home’ and owner at The Seasonal Touch. www.theseasonaltouch.co.uk

WALK
“IF YOU LIKE PIÑA COLADAS, AND GETTING CAUGHT IN THE RAIN”
Well, it’s not quite piña colada, but it is a pineapple and you may well get caught in the rain. This month we visited what is described as “the most bizarre building in Scotland” - the Dunmore Pineapple near Airth - to check out the garden and walks nearby. Within Dunmore Park are gardens maintained by the National Trust for Scotland, the remains of what was Dunmore House (not accessible) ... and an extraordinary stone pineapple.
The “Dunmore Pineapple” is clearly signed from the A905 (25 minutes from Falkirk) and a track of about a mile takes you to a small car park. Walk through the gates into the walled garden and you are presented with a sloping vista north to south. The gardens are dominated by the huge stone pineapple. The pineapple was built by the 4th Earl of Dunmore, John Murray, most likely on his return from Virginia where he was routed as the last royal governor in 1776 as the American War of Independence kicked off. It stands some 14m high and was built on top of a pavillion which he had had built in 1761 in his walled garden. Walled gardens were built in Scotland to allow

plants to be protected against the vagaries of the climate and to enable more exotic species of plant to be grown. The walls here had a cavity through which hot air was circulated to allow the cultivation of exotic fruit. Lord Dunmore’s son, the 5th Earl wrote how “hothouse fruit ... was sent every fortnight from Dunmore Park, where my father had no house, but an excellent garden.” Pineapples were seen as a great symbol of wealth in the 18th century, and the folly is perhaps a rather vulgar symbol of the Earl’s wealth. Nonetheless, the detail of the work is outstanding. The construction is fine example of masonry with the leaves designed in such a way that they are largely immune from frost damage. The architect is unknown, the design and workmanship outstanding, and the mystery of the pineapple is enhanced by the complete lack of any references to it in diaries or records from the time. Lord Dunmore had no house here, but this spot must have been quite special for him to have conceived of this extraordinary monument here, tucked away on his quiet Scottish estate, a far cry from the subtropical heat and rebellious turbulence of Virginia that he had recently left; it is perhaps a statement that despite the defeat in America, he was back, wealth intact and larger than life.
Stone bothies either side of the pineapple pavillion, which were built for gardeners, are now holiday cottages which are available for hire via the Landmark Trust.
The gardens themselves have a mixture of mature plants growing against the walls, with roses in full bloom when we visited. The garden slopes down through two avenues of trees to a pond which marks the southern boundary. At the top of the garden on the right there is a gate which takes you on a delightful walk through mature woodlands. There is another walk through a second walled garden, which is being restored, through an avenue of Redwood trees planted by the 4th Earl to celebrate the marriage of his son in 1804. The walk takes you to the ruins of Elphinstone Tower. Verdict: You can bring a picnic and have a pleasant afternoon in a garden that radiates tranquillity, with the pineapple definitely adding a curiosity factor. Best visited in the spring and summer; the walled garden, the pond and the short woodland walks are a delight. One criticism is that the walks are not well sign-posted so it is easy for you to go off piste. Dogs are welcome if kept on a lead. Airth Castle is nearby for those who want lunch, which is £12-£15 for two courses. @KonectMagazines

THE EARLS OF DUNMORE
Dunmore’s beautiful The garden’s instigator was the 4th Earl of Dunmore who was walled gardens the last colonial Governor of Virginia. Described as “vain and vexatious” by Patrick Henry, the American founding father, he helped ferment what was already a fraught situation between the native Virginians and their British Colonial rulers. In 1776 he had to flee the colony. However even without anything to govern he still managed to draw his salary until 1783. Previous Earls had been imprisoned in the Tower of London for supporting the Jacobite cause. The 8th Earl was a distinguished soldier who went on to win the VC during the Boer War. The present Earl is a marine contractor and lives in Tasmania. @KonectMagazines

FOOD & DRINK
A classic French dessert
Just a few cheap ingredients are needed to make this classic French dessert. Served with fresh fruit it’s an impressive finale to a special meal.
Ingredients:
• 150g granulated sugar • 4 medium eggs, plus 2 medium egg yolks • 100g caster sugar • 600ml whole milk • 1 tsp vanilla extract • Orange slices, grapes and raspberries, to serve
Tip:
Use small metal pudding basins or ceramic ramekin dishes each with 150ml capacity.
Makes 6 Ready in 1 hour 10 minutes, plus overnight chilling
Method:
1. To make the caramel, place the granulated sugar in a medium heavy-based pan with 3 tbsp cold water. Heat gently, stirring, until the sugar has dissolved in the water to form a clear syrup. Increase the heat and bring the syrup to the boil, without stirring, until it turns a deep golden caramel colour. Swirl the pan occasionally to prevent hotspots forming and the caramel burning.
2. Remove the pan from the heat and carefully pour the hot caramel into six individual oven-proof dishes (see TIP). Place the dishes in a roasting tin. Preheat the oven to 140oC/fan 170oC/gas mark 3. 3. Whisk the eggs, yolks and caster sugar together in a large heatproof bowl. Pour the milk into a clean pan and bring to simmering point, then whisk the hot milk into the egg mixture. Stir in the vanilla extract then strain the mixture into a large jug and divide between the dishes.
4. Pour enough boiling water into the roasting tin to come halfway up the sides of the dishes. Bake for 1822 minutes until just set. Remove from the oven and leave to cool, then remove from the tin, cover and chill for 4 hours or overnight. 5. To serve, run the tip of a knife round the edge of the set custard. Invert each one on to a small plate. Serve decorated with orange slices, grapes and raspberries.

FAMILIES
If you’re trying to get your kids to turn off their mobile devices, Apple and Google have introduced vastly improved parental control features for iOS and Android respectively. If your devices have the appropriate versions of iOS and Android these features can make a big difference.
Apple’s version is called Screen Time, and it’s already installed in any device running iOS 12 – you’ll find it in Settings. Google’s Family Link is a free download from the Google Play Store. Both systems enable you to: limit screen time for your kids; set an automatic ‘bedtime’ when everything shuts down; and block specific apps. On Apple devices you can limit specific kinds of apps too, so you might set one limit for games and a longer limit for creative apps such as art and design apps.
Make the most of the improved parental control features on the latest devices @KonectMagazines
