TO OUR JUNE/JULY EDITION

THIS ISSUE

W

elcome to the second issue of the new community magazine, the Konect magazine for Falkirk. Thanks for your comments and feedback on the May issue, we hope you find it informative and entertaining again. The first week of June every year is Volunteers’ Week, a time to thank volunteers for their contributions that keep our communities running in so many ways, as well as celebrating volunteering and finding ways locally of getting involved. We run a Charity of the Month feature in every issue of Konect, and this month I was talking to a little-known charity that runs along the canal through Falkirk – the Seagull Trust, see pages 8-9. They are looking for volunteers to help keep their wonderful service running smoothly. Volunteering is open to everyone as is a great way of not only contributing to a cause you care about, but is rewarding personally - a way of learning new skills, gaining confidence, being part of a community, gaining experience and of course having fun! There is a huge range of organisations always happy to have a helping hand. A volunteer at an event I was at recently said, “I can’t imagine not volunteering now. It becomes part of your life.” If you are involved with a charity locally and would like your organisation featured in Konect, please contact me. Or if you’ve got something interesting and different going on that you’d like to share with the local community, do get in touch and we may be able to feature your story in an upcoming issue. We celebrate all things local. Thanks for reading Konect and supporting local businesses and organisations.

Fancy yourself as a skipper? People are always needed to operate the boats. If you are interested in taking to the helm, full training is given and you can achieve skipper status. Please contact the Trust for further information.

Hidden away behind the railway and the canal at the south end of Bantaskine Park is a charity that is not only improving lives but possibly changing them. Each day Seagull Trust Cruises embarks on trips along the Union Canal taking groups of children or adults with special needs. These free excursions are carried out by a team of volunteers on specially built fully-accessible boats, and provide an invaluable resource for people who would not otherwise have a chance to experience the tranquillity of a canal cruise. The boats are fully accessible with lifts which take passengers down to the saloons and each boat has a galley and a toilet accessible for wheelchairs.

The charity relies on donations and the trained crew to make the cruises and the holidays happen. However these resources are running low. Financial support of whatever value is most welcome but importantly, people are always required to operate the boats. Full training is given, and those who are interested can achieve Skipper status.

Most of all, it’s fun. Fun for those on the trips and for those providing them.

Thousands of folk have been on these cruises, some through the famous Falkirk Tunnel and others onto The Falkirk Wheel. Many may not otherwise be able to enjoy the countryside were not for these mini adventures. It’s an operation that many in the town know nothing about.

If you’d like to help in whatever way please contact:

Two boats operate the day trips, Govan Seagull and Barr Seagull. They also operate a residential holiday boat, The Marion Seagull. For people with special needs a holiday can sometimes be complex, so The Marion Seagull is fully equipped for a disabled person and their family to enjoy over a week on the lowland canals. It can be operated by an STC skipper or by the family.

We are just off Gartcows Road under the railway bridge in Bantaskine Park, Falkirk. Boathouse/ Reception Centre, South Bantaskine Estate, Falkirk. Sat-Nav FK1 5EF.

For fuss-free and timeless style, choose plain and simple chic

For comfortable, practical and good-looking homes, simple style – a combination of unpretentious hard-working form and function – excels. It takes classic designs combined with the best modern furnishings, using tactile materials and pale, neutral colours to achieve a look that is calm, quiet, comfortable and honest, and pleasing to live with. Quick and inexpensive to achieve are walls in plain paint shades. Use neutrals in soft whites ranging from chalk, ivory and bone to deeper taupes and greys, with stronger contrasting accents: sage green, midnight blue or earthy brown, for example. More finished surfaces could include grasscloth wallpaper, bevel-edge tiles or timber panelling. For floors, combine practical sturdy materials such as traditional stone flags, brick pavers or wooden floorboards with the softness of plain or minimally patterned carpets or conveniently placed, understated rugs. Furniture should be pared down and clean-lined in style and chosen for strength, durability and comfort. Windsor or ladder-back chairs, wooden stools, blanket boxes and traditional dressers are ideal, especially in natural wood or painted in a muted shade. Mixing eras works perfectly, provided pieces are chosen with good design and plain style. Forget elaborate window treatments and – if possible – leave windows bare, or consider panelled wooden shutters, Roman blinds or gathered curtains. Use plain loose covers for chairs and sofas, and linen, cotton or wool cushions with no-nonsense fastenings and basic trim. Use plain colours and stripes, adding a range of textures for interest. Introduce a range of natural materials, such as woven willow, sisal, slate or timber to provide an interesting atmosphere. Good storage is vital for a calm and airy feel, so utility rooms, laundry rooms, boot rooms and dressing rooms are a great asset. Where space is limited, well-designed cupboards, shelves and other storage areas help make simple rooms feel more spacious. In kitchens, free-standing storage @KonectMagazines

suchas a dresser, plate rack or butcher’s block breaks up the uniformity of fitted cupboards and creates a more timeless appearance. For lighting, inset spotlights provide light without drawing the eye. Add classic fittings, such as glass pendants, Anglepoise table lamps or slender wall lights with ceramic shades where necessary. Minimise accessories, choosing essential items such as wooden peg hooks, handmade soap, woollen throws, blue and white crockery, rustic bread boards and pillar candles, plus cottage-garden flowers. Key ingredients of simple style, • Consider wooden panelling, tongue-andgroove boarding, textured wallpaper and classic tiles for walls • Opt for floorboards, stone or slate flags, brick pavers or terracotta tiles for the floor, plus plain carpets and/or subtle rugs • Combine soft white shades with a few deeper colours • Choose natural materials • Ensure rooms are clutter-free by making the most of storage • Combining old and new will work if furnishings are chosen carefully for both form and function • Choose plain and striped patterns • Fit wooden shutters, Roman blinds or softly gathered curtains at windows, or leave them bare FALKIRK | 15

can help your HEALTH AND WELLBEING If you have recently retired, you might still be getting used to retirement and being at home. Or maybe you work from home and don’t see many people all day. Perhaps you don’t exercise as much as you would like to and want to improve your fitness and wellbeing. If you are an experienced dog lover then PetStay West Lothian and Falkirk has an opportunity for dog lovers to join their team of pet sitters. “It’s a great way to meet new people and their dogs, keep active and healthy and get paid a little extra too”, says Oriana, who owns PetStay West Lothian and Falkirk Branch who have been providing holiday care for dogs in West Lothian, Falkirk and surrounding areas since 2018. Oriana explains, “I’ve always wanted to work in a pet care environment and decided to open PetStay West Lothian and Falkirk when I had the opportunity to change career. I’ve had dogs for many years and know how difficult it can be to find the right care for your beloved family pet when you go on holiday. I have a great team of pet sitters, we’re like a PetStay family and sometimes I meet our doggy guests too, which is great!” Marion, who recently joined the PetStay team says, “being a PetStay host has really helped me get fitter and healthier. I have lost over a stone in the 7 months I have been part of the PetStay team. I have met lovely dogs and their owners. Our @KonectMagazines

customers have peace of mind that their much-loved family pet will be given one to one attention and lots of cuddles! I live on my own which can be lonely at times so I really enjoy the companionship of a doggy guest. I used to have my own dog, but I can’t commit to owning my own dog anymore, so this is a great way to get my “doggy fix”. PetStay are great they make sure that I am matched to the dog that best suits me and my lifestyle. It’s flexible too.”

– a tale of tenacity Nestling in the Ochil Hills near Dollar lies a hidden gem with a fascinating history, a garden that nearly never was, almost destroyed, and finally is being beautifully restored by a team of volunteers and funding from Scottish National Heritage. Cowden’s genesis and construction was the inspiration of Isabella Christie. The Christie family were wealthy industrialists and Isabella’s father had bought the Cowden Castle estate in the 1860s. He encouraged his two daughters to travel with him as he visited Europe. When he died in 1902, Ella and her sister found themselves disinherited, and after an out-of-court settlement Ella decided to take up residence at Cowden. From the inspiration of her travels the germ of an idea to re-create a Japanese garden was born. Ella was a keen traveller, and was the first western lady to meet the Dalai Lama. The Cowden Gardens website gives some background: “Although at times travelling in hostile conditions, her trunks contained dresses for parties (including a banquet given by the Maharaja of Kashmir and dinner with Lord Kitchener then Commander in Chief, India). She camped in the snow at Chorbat Pass, sailed in a cargo ship full of pigs, travelled by pack horse and cart in the 18 | FALKIRK

Kashmir wilderness, and trekked by foot for 60 miles in the Desoi Mountains.

“Aged50, while waiting for the train at Dollar station, Ella was asked if she were travelling to Edinburgh; her short reply, ‘No, Samarkand’, perfectly encapsulates the fearless spinster who was fluent in four languages including Finnish.” Starting by damming the burn that ran through the estate to create a loch, she employed a female Japanese garden designer, Taki Handa, to help create Shã Raku En, ‘the place of pleasure and delight.’ Despite being destroyed by vandals in the 1960s and left to become almost irretrievably overgrown, the gardens are now being restored to their original beauty for us all to enjoy. The seven acre site can be divided into two parts: the Japanese Garden and the Woodland Walk. There is a well-appointed car park. Entry to the gardens is up a small path to a couple of portakabins which also house a tea room. The service is friendly and @KonectMagazines

informal. The cost of entry lets you walk round the Japanese Garden and gives you access to the Woodland Walk. The entrance of the gardens proper, with its red tiles, wooden trellis and inscription welcoming you to the garden, draws you to a vista of calm as the lake dominates your view. In Japanese art and gardens the emphasis is on building a harmonious environment of plants, water and stone. When we visited in May, the garden was fused with a haze of yellow and pink, azaleas in full bloom. If visiting in April you would get the best of the cherry blossoms. The delicacy of the acers and the brightness of the plants present the eye with a feast of sensory visions. As you progress round the walk you will see a small pathway to a recreation of a Shinto shrine, and the garden features tea shelters, bridges, stepping stones and traditional stone lanterns. The walk takes a minimum of 30 minutes but depending on your level of contemplation you can easily spend longer. The woodland walk now beckons, a downward walk through mature woodland to a small waterfall near the site of the now-demolished Cowden Castle. The Japanese Garden at Cowden is a haven of tranquillity and testament to the vision of Ella Christie and to the team under her great great niece Sara Stewart, who lead the restoration work. At ÂŁ6 entry fee this is a bargain for entry into somewhere that is suffused with beauty and care and well worth what is approximately a 30 minute drive from Falkirk. There is a tea-room on site. The gardens are open Wednesday to Sundays all year round, please check the website for opening times. You will need a car to get there since it is not served by public transport and sensible shoes/boots for walking round.
