aster is almost here already – here’s hoping for some good weather so we can get out and about during the holidays. Awareness of dementia is gradually being raised in society in general and is very much at the forefront with the recent passing of Sir Terry Pratchett. There are twenty dementia cafes in Edinburgh including one in Balerno and our writer Suzanne visited to find out more about it – see the article on pages 8-9. Ratho Scouts are doing well with all three sections full....but they urgently need leaders to help out. See page 57 and get in touch if you think you can help. With a host of other local community, event and services information, we hope you find the magazine informative and entertaining. If you’ve got something interesting and different going on that you’d like to share with the local community, do get in touch and we may be able to feature your story in an upcoming issue.

Supporting people with dementia and their carers by Suzanne Green
Thanks to books such as Sally Magnusson’s account of her mother’s dementia*, brave films like the recently released Still Alice, and awareness campaigning by the late Sir Terry Pratchett and others, dementia is gradually becoming better understood and accepted in our communities. But until recently I was not familiar with the concept of “dementia cafés” or aware that there are more than 40 operating in Scotland, and one of those is in Balerno. A clinical psychologist, Dr. Bère Miesen, is credited with establishing the first dementia café in 1997 in the Netherlands. He saw the need for a safe place where people with dementia and their carers could get together, socialise and support one another. The first dementia café in the UK, based on Dr. Miesen’s model, was set up in 2000 in Farnborough, Hampshire. Several years ago Balerno resident Kay Latimer visited a dementia café in central Edinburgh after hearing positive reports from a friend. “I wanted to understand why it attracted people,” says the retired nursing sister. “Eventually I realised it was because of the support it offered.” As Pastoral Care Co-ordinator of Balerno Parish Church, Kay felt prompted to do some research to assess whether a dementia café serving Balerno, Currie and Juniper Green would be welcomed. She consulted churches, GP practices, social workers,
8
Clare Dow (left) and Kay Latimer (right) at the PALM Café psychiatric nurses, libraries, community education departments and local councillors. When she was convinced it would be a good idea, she submitted a proposal to the church for a “new social group for people with advanced loss of memory and their carers”. Kay’s proposal was unanimously approved, and the PALM (People with Advanced Loss of Memory) dementia café was launched on 26 August 2013. It meets in the St Joseph’s Centre on the last Tuesday of the month (2.30 to 4.00 pm), and average footfall is 30-35 people, including members, guests and volunteers. “We offer a really good programme,” Kay comments. “Music is a core activity – in March Iain MacPhail, the well-known Scottish musician, returned to the café, this time with his wife Viola and her Scottish Country Dance Team.” Other activities include viewing old historical photos, singing and craft work. There is always a subtle emphasis on reminiscence. Currie resident Neil Scott says, “I can’t speak highly enough of the PALM Café. Kay and her team do a wonderful job of making people feel at home. My wife loves to sing, and she remembers the words to songs from a byegone era. She also enjoys visits from Dean Park Primary pupils, when they come to entertain us with their Burns’ poems and songs.”
KONECT
A sense of well-being “We started with 14 café volunteers, and now there are 17,” says Kay. “All have received training through Alzheimer Scotland or the Living Memory Association. Most are retired people, but we do have some younger volunteers, including two Currie High School pupils! We try to maintain a ratio of one volunteer per two guests.” Former Health Services Researcher Clare Dow is part of the PALM project team. “Being diagnosed with dementia can be scary and life-transforming,” she says. “But increasingly we are going to see people living in our community with dementia. We have to do the best job we can in raising awareness and being supportive of them.” Dementia is a gradual decline in the functioning of the brain. Amazingly, there are more than 100 forms, though Alzheimer’s disease accounts for about 70% of cases. Globally, it is a huge health issue. In Scotland about 90,000 people are currently living with dementia – most have Alzheimer’s disease – and this number is rapidly increasing. There is no known cure; it is a progressive condition that gets worse over time. However, treatments are available that may help some people with the symptoms of some forms of dementia, particularly Alzheimer’s disease. And research is progressing every day. The city of Edinburgh is working towards obtaining “dementia friendly” status. And, as awareness and understanding grows, we can help our communities stand beside those with dementia and their carers. Vibrant, welcoming dementia cafés can make a big difference to people, creating a sense of well-being and improving their quality of life. For more information about dementia cafés in West Lothian, email Alzheimer Scotland: WestLothianServices@alzscot. org or ring them on 01506 53310. You can also ring the Dementia Helpline, which offers 24-hour information and emotional support, on 0808 808 3000. *Where Memories Go: Why Dementia Changes Everything (Hodder & Stoughton 2015)

Gutters can accumulate a lot of debri, mostly leaves and twigs over a winter which will inevitably cause clogs and overflow. We try to be green … in lots of little ways! Julia Grindley says she is not keen to be held up as the epitome of green living. “But our family does try,” she comments, “in lots of little ways.” Julia and her husband John live in Balerno with their daughters, Hannah (14) and Kathy (12). As a child, Julia lived with her family in Paris, until she left for university at Cambridge. “I remember working with my parents in their garden – perhaps something about my upbringing encouraged a concern for the environment,” she says. Her brother, David Haskell, a biology professor in the USA, wrote The Forest Unseen, which has been described as “a remarkable exploration of nature and the mysteries of the living world”. About four years ago Julia and John invested in solar panels for their home. “Now about 30 percent of our electricity comes from the panels,” she explains. “It’s funny to think that we have a solar-powered dishwasher, phone and hairdryer.” There’s no tumble dryer in the house; Julia doesn’t see the point in “using loads of electricity to dry clothes when they can be hung up”. The Grindleys try hard when it comes to re-using and recycling. A stack of large plastic boxes sits in one corner of their kitchen, each designated for a different recyclable item: plastic bags, paper, card, etc. “I take our old newspapers to the SSPCA,” says Julia, “because they are needed for lining some animals’ living spaces.” Having a green mindset means that when you no longer need something, you ask yourself, ‘who can use this?’ Unwanted clothing goes in the charity bags, and furniture that is no longer needed is given to Bethany Christian Trust or CHAI. Buying,
18
Julia and Rocky selling or swapping online ensures that goods are not discarded when there is still life in them. As much as possible, the family cooks from scratch, so they avoid excess packaging. “We try not to buy vegetables that are overly packaged,” says Julia, “but if it can’t be avoided, then the plastic can go in the container for carrier bags – we return these to the supermarket for recycling when we’re in the area.” Julia’s desire to be green influenced her choice of career. A rep for Phoenix Cards (www.JuliaCards. com), she was attracted to the company because the card stock comes from the UK. Cards are chlorine-free and make use of vegetable inks. When her business catalogues need to be delivered in the community, John takes them on his bike. “He likes to cycle,” Julia comments, “so it makes more sense than using the car.” In the Grindley household the week’s meals are planned in advance. “That way we only shop for what we need,” Julia explains. “This means less waste!” No doubt Hannah and Kathy are growing up with a concern to be good stewards of the planet. And the dog is co-operating too. “Rocky’s poo bags are bio-degradable,” says Julia, with k a smile. “He is doing his part.”

In the first round, hundreds of photographs from across the country were judged by the hairdressing industry’s most influential names in hairdressing including last year’s winner and X-Factor hairdresser - Jamie Stevens, the 2012 title holders Sally & Jamie Brooks, leading session stylist & press favourite Adam Reed and hairdressing icon Charles Worthington MBE. Hair Tech fought off stiff competition and were chosen to take part in the high energy Regional finals being held throughout April. The next stage will put Hair Tech through their paces as they will create a live model look that demonstrates an awareness for Autumn/Winter 2015/16 hair and fashion trends. The team of judges are looking for a trend-setting, showstopping total look that can inspire clients and hairdressers. Hazel Gebbie is part of the very excited Hair Tech team who are all overjoyed with having broken through to the next level. The team will now join 60 other salons from across the Scottish region in a bid to make it through to the grand final. “We’re all very excited and honoured to have our work picked out by some of the most talented and inspirational hairdressers in the industry and are looking forward to competing alongside the best of the best!” Each salon team will have just 30 tense minutes to bring their model look to life

Pain free dental care with the magic wand!
A lot of people are put off visiting the dentist because they need to have an injection. Because of this we have invested in the wand. The wand is a computerized anesthetic delivery system which ensures patients can be numbed up pain free, unlike normal injections. The wand also does not leave you feeling numb for hours after. We now use the wand as part of our dental care and patients tell us how much it has transformed their dental experience.

COMMUNITY
Bring on the bowls!
Karen Murray finds out a little more about lawn green bowling while chatting to secretary of Currie Bowling Club Alex Neill and President Peter Henderson. Just as golf owes its existence to the Scots, so does the game of bowls: that is lawn bowls, not the tenpin variety. While the game can (like most games) be traced back to Egyptian times, it was in Scotland that it really took hold and became popularised, the colonists that headed to America and Australia taking it with them and spreading it throughout the modern world. In the mid 19th Century the Scottish clubs all got together and formalised rules and laws that are still abided by today across the world. The Scottish Bowling Association was formed in 1892 and the game was firmly established, rivalling golf in popularity. Most villages and towns have a bowling green most of which are still in use today. Currie Bowling Club was established prior to the SBA in 1874 when bowling was at its zenith. Local landowner William Gibson-Craig gifted the piece of land to the community for the bowling club and a meeting was held to consider the matter on 22 May 1874. Matter duly considered and plenty of folk up
for the challenge, it was not long before the good folk of Currie were bowling on their own green. Like any sport, bowling has had its ups and downs but despite that, the club is still in existence and running pretty much as it always has. Of course, where originally the men bowled and the women made the sandwiches – that much at least has changed. The women soon wanted to join in and they have their own league and there are also mixed matches. Interest in bowling had been waning a little but there is renewed enthusiasm these days thanks to the coverage that lawn green bowling received during the recent Commonwealth Games where Scotland was particularly successful, the men winning the singles, pairs and fours (rink). The season at CBC begins on 18th April this year and will run through to September although the club will be open all year round as, naturally, there is a social side to this club, equally as important as the game. So if bowling is something you have been considering taking up, then now is the perfect time to head along to Currie Bowling Club and see what all the fuss is about. It is walking distance from just about anywhere in Currie which means you can enjoy the social side as well as the competitive game. And why not bring the kids too and make it a family affair? The annual Burns Supper and the Sportsman’s Dinner are always sociable affairs and as a member you can hire the venue for your own party. If you are looking for a new hobby and a way to make new friends, what could be better than spending time learning and playing this tactical and intriguing game, then socialising in the club afterwards? (see the advert opposite for details).
So what is bowls all about? Lawn bowls is played on greens measuring 38.5m x 38.5m. The green is divided into sections called rinks. The target is clear – get your bowls as close as possible to a small white (sometimes yellow) ball called the ‘jack’. Players take it in turn to bowl and when all the bowls have been played, competitors or teams get one point for each of their bowls that is lying closer to the jack than the opponent’s closest bowl. Singles, Pairs, Triples and Fours (also called Rink) competitions take place throughout the year for both men and women.

MONEY MATTERS
Retirement flexibility here at last by Personal Money Management
As mentioned in previous articles in Konect the government have introduced the most radical pension changes for over a century. These changes take effect from 6 April and give pension holders incredible flexibility as to what they can now do with their pension. I will now discuss in very brief terms a few of the options you now have at retirement. Annuity This is where you give the annuity provider a lump sum and in return for this lump sum they pay you a guaranteed income for as long as you live.
Flexi-drawdown Flexi-drawdown is the new name for drawdown, where you stay invested and you withdraw on an annual basis as much or as little as you wish. You can change the amount that you draw out each year but any money drawn out will be added to your income and taxed at your marginal rate. Fixed Term Annuity This is where you give a provider a lump sum for a term between 5 and 20 years and they in turn will give you a guaranteed annual income and a guaranteed capital return at the end of the term. Unit Linked Guaranteed Plans In this case you give the provider a lump sum and they will guarantee a minimum income for life but if the underlying investments performs well enough the growth is locked in and the guaranteed income will increase. You maintain access to the capital at all times. The retirement product market is now large and complex but delivering valuable benefits to retirees. Consult an Independent Financial Adviser to learn more about your options.

Interiors feature
Make the most of that new extension with some ideas from EKCO
Now might be the right time to start work on that extension you’ve always promised yourself. But what would you use it for?
truly one of life’s luxuries. Bifold doors which are fully opened to remove all barriers to your garden can create the illusion of space. Why not bring that space closer and have your garden illuminated with solar lights so your guests can enjoy the air and the view without ever leaving the dining table?
Do you have a definite idea or does the thought of having some extra space just appeal to you? Here are some ideas from EKCO to give you some inspiration.
Home office – Why drive to the office when the office can come to you? Apart from the convenience of not having to drive miles every day to get to work there can be tax benefits to building a section of your home that’s solely dedicated to your work. Financial reasons aside, the idea of an office designed around your needs can be highly appealing. Plus you get to see more of the family. Imagine opening your bifold doors on a warm summer’s day and watching your children making the most of the garden while you enjoy a coffee break or work away with your headphones on playing your favourite classical music?
Sun room – Who doesn’t dream of a lazy day in their own sun room? However, with the hustle and bustle of daily life relaxation time can be at a premium. Having a separate room which is kept clutter free and painted in light pastel shades, complete with a chaise longue or recliner and comfy sofa can be the perfect way to re-energise your batteries. This is where your bifold doors come into their own. Fully opened they’ll let in more sunlight and flood your room with warmth and air. Perfect for grabbing a few moments shut eye before round two. Dining kitchen – For those who love to entertain building an extension onto your kitchen can give you the perfect dining room and the space to make a real night of it. The kitchen is the heart of the home. A cliché perhaps but true. The idea of whiling away the summer evenings with close friends around a table with great food, wine and conversation is
Gym – Expensive gym fees and the inconvenience of having to get there and back when we are so time starved can make the idea of a home gym really appealing. If you design your extension with one just one solid wall then you can place full size mirrors on the interior and have your bifold doors in place along the other two sides. This means that when they’re open you will almost be doing your work out outdoors and the mirrors will reflect the light. Now if that doesn’t inspire you to get fit nothing will.
KITCHENS | BATHROOMS | BIFOLD DOORS | SUNROOMS
Many ideas, one solution At EKCO we’ve been supplying and installing top quality Pronorm German-built kitchens and bathrooms since 1999. We’re also one of Scotland’s top suppliers of Origin bi-fold doors which are designed to open fully and allow more fresh air into your home. And, if you need some extra space or simply a place to relax and unwind then we can create that lifestyle sunroom you have always dreamed of.

Gadgets for green fingers

While few of us are likely to spend nearly £900 on Flymo’s latest robot lawnmower, let alone £2,500 for a highend robot mower, there are lots of garden gadgets that can make life easier and more fun. One of the most useful developments is the arrival of cordless tools ranging from lawnmowers to electric chainsaws. Battery technology has improved dramatically in a very short time, so it’s possible to get tools such as Black & Decker’s 36V cordless strimmer that can cut up to 3,750 metres on a single charge. Just remember to charge them up before you use them, as recharging flat batteries can take a while. If you fancy something a bit less high tech, Japanese hori-hori knives might be right up your street: the name means “digging digging” and a hori-hori knife’s straight sharp blade makes it perfect for everything from planting to cutting roots. They can be a little tricky to find, but eBay is always a good source of such tools. Another great tool is the Woodman’s Pal. It’s a little pricey - expect to pay £50 upwards - but it’s really clever and really useful. The Pal was originally designed for the US Army in the early 1940s and it’s a cross between an axe and a machete, with a hooked section on the end. That makes it great for clearing all kinds of vegetation, and it replaces a whole bunch of tools including pruning saws, shears, loppers and in some cases, even chainsaws. 48
4
3 This year’s Consumer Electronics Show (CES) featured the usual home entertainment technology, lots of TVs and even more laptops, but it also had an unusually large selection of garden gadgets. One of the cutest was the Green Farm Cube. Another Japanese design, and it’s a hydroponic grow box that enables you to grow plants such as herbs anywhere all year round. At around £120 it’s quite expensive, but it looks great and works well. It’s particularly good for people who want to grow things but don’t have a garden to do it. It seems that smartphones are taking over every aspect of our lives, so it’s not a surprise that they’re starting to look at our gardens too. App-connected gadgets are everywhere at the moment. Netatmo’s Connected Weather Station (approx £110) tells your phone about indoor and outdoor humidity, temperature and air quality as well as predicting the weather, while Koubachi’s Plant Sensor 2 Outdoor (approx £96) measures soil moisture, sunlight, infra-red light, temperature and more to let you know exactly how well valuable plants are doing. Another CES exhibitor, Edyn, promises to deliver the “connected garden” with sensors that analyse the soil, monitor the temperature and even check the weather forecast to help you decide what to plant and how to look after it. The product range also includes smart water valves that automatically water your plants, and solar power means you don’t need to run any cables. It’s overkill for a couple of blooms from Homebase, but if you’re a serious gardener it’s a seriously clever bit of kit. Edyn is currently available for pre-order, and the sensor and water valve are $99 (£65) and $59 (£39) respectively. KONECT

RECIPE & FOOD NOTES
Rhubarb
By Anne Pinkerton
At the end of February the Scottish Government announced the next stage of their “Towards a Healthier Nation” programme, called “Eat Local.” People across Scotland are being encouraged to make the most of fresh and in-season, local food with the launch of the Scottish Government’s Food Provenance ‘Happier Mealtimes’ campaign. Alongside this there will be champions encouraging the eating and sourcing of fresh, in-season food, which is nutritious, tastes delicious and also has environmental benefits. There will be drop-in sessions to inspire and inform people at supermarkets all over Scotland. Work is beginning in schools and hospitals to support them in using local seasonal produce in their menus.
www.greenerscotland.org has a “what tastes best this month?” chart which is helpful when you are lacking in ideas about what is seasonal to give your family for meals. Their suggested fruit for April is rhubarb; new potatoes and spring greens are the vegetables, and the meats suggested include rabbit, venison and wood pigeon. This sounds a bit posh but really it is not. It does mean that we have to think in a slightly different way about our food. Local supermarkets sell all these things. Rabbit comes diced ready to cook into any stew or stirfry you might do with chicken, and with no bones. Venison sausages are low in fat and although they seem a bit more expensive they do not “bleed” as you cook them so you are getting the meat you pay for. With a tin of mixed beans, another of chopped tomatoes and a fried onion, a little garlic and a dash of recurrent jelly make them part of a sausage and mixed bean casserole. Serve it with new potatoes and finely shredded steamed spring greens. Rhubarb is mostly associated with sweet dishes which we should be steering clear of if we are really trying to be a healthy nation! However it can be delicious eaten with richer proteins such as pork, duck and mackerel. All of which are traditionally served with fruit: orange with duck, apple with pork and gooseberries with mackerel.
Oven-baked pork chops with rhubarb 4 pork chops or 1 per person 1 onion finely chopped and sweated in butter or oil 250g rhubarb wiped, cut into 2inch lengths 1 inch root ginger peeled and chopped very fine Dash orange juice or juice ½ orange Seasoning Method - Either in a heavy metal casserole dish or in a frying pan sear the pork chops for a minute or two on both sides to brown the meat. Transfer into an ovenproof dish, arrange the chops around the edge and put all the other ingredients in the centre. Cover the dish with a lid or a double layer of foil. Bake for 30-40 minutes in a hot oven (180oC). The fruit will make a sauce and take up the fat from the pork. Check the flavour and perhaps add a teaspoonful of sugar to the fruit. Serve with mashed potatoes and a green veg. such as cabbage, broccoli or sprouts. You can do exactly the same but substitute Bramley apples in the winter.

Rhubarb Gingerbread 125g butter 125g soft brown sugar 2 eggs lightly beaten 100g black treacle, warmed with 150g golden syrup 60g chopped crystalised ginger heaped teaspoon ground ginger 250g plain flour 1 level teaspoon bicarbonate of soda dissolved in 4 tablespoons milk 500g rhubarb cut into small pieces Method - Cream the butter and sugar; add the eggs and then the treacle and ginger. Fold the flour in with a metal spoon and make a batter with the milk.Spread half the mixture in the bottom of a 1 ½ litre oven proof dish or use a small roasting tin lined with non-stick paper. Put in a layer of the fruit and cover with the rest of the mixture. Bake at 160oC for 45 minutes. Lower the temperature to 150oC and check again after 15-20 minutes. It might need 10 minutes after this. Test with a skewer. The sides can over-cook because of the juice from the fruit.
Rhubarb gingerbread Pies, tarts, crumbles and cakes are a lovely use of forced rhubarb and this cake with a layer of fruit in the middle is suitable for pudding if served fresh from the oven with cream, yoghurt or custard. Eat the rest later with a cuppa.

Unfortunately we are losing two of our three leaders at the end of April due to work commitments which means they are moving away from the area.
As a scout leader you can have a full or part-time role and training and support will be given at no cost to you. If you would like more information please contact me. Please remember - NO LEADERS, NO RATHO SCOUTS Erica Farquharson Group Scout Leader ericaf@btinternet.com or Naill Phillips Cub leader niall.phillips@bt.com
We have had scouts in our village for almost thirty years and at the moment all three sections are full. There has never been a more exciting time to be part of our group. If we are to continue we need Scout leaders. Scouting is fun for both young people and leaders alike.

Currie Playgroup Currie Playgroup is a fun- filled, safe and caring environment for children from 2 years old.
Easter Holidays by Pat Banfill
Children look forward to time off from school, though older ones are aware of exams looming in the summer term.
It is run by parents with fantastic staff who will give your child a happy memory of playgroup. We are currently doing a project on space which the children have enjoyed. As the weather gets warmer we will be outside planting fruit and vegetables with the kids and having outside fun. We are a partner provider with Edinburgh City Council so funding is available for those who are eligible. We offer wrap around lunch and take children to afternoon nursery at Currie and have an early drop off service for those who need to go to work early. If you wish to come for a look around or add your child’s details to our waiting list please contact our Play Leader Amanda Gillespie on 0131 449 2016.
Parents often find child care complicated in the holiday period, and not everyone can take time away from work then, so may not look forward to them so much. How can we do a bit more than just get through them? One principle is to try to create good memories in your family, and this includes families which don’t contain children. What can you do to celebrate the season? Who knows what the weather will be like from day to day, but deciding to go out somewhere different, suitable dressed, whatever the weather, in itself may become memorable. There are many events advertised locally and further afield, and you could invite another family to join yours on a day out. There are seasonal foods to enjoy (look in any supermarket), or try making hot cross buns or a special cake together at home. You might decide to grow some seeds in pots or in the garden, or you could offer to help another household with some spring cleaning in the house or in the garden. All of these ideas and many more can be used to build good memories into your family, and form the basis for the next season of life together.
