y attention was caught recently by a piece of local history across in the Bathgate Hills, the kind that I enjoy investigating – totally obscure now, but which made a huge splash at the time all the way to London. See the feature on pages 8-9. I think our local writer Suzanne got a fair share of a different kind of history this month when she interviewed Jean Barton for the Village People column! She could have written pages of memoirs if space allowed! See page 35. The Easter holidays are upon us, I hope everyone manages to get a break, whatever it may be, from the usual routine. Thanks for reading Konect and supporting local organisations.

LOCAL HISTORY
SILVER MINES “CENTRAL BELT SILVER RUSH” I discovered a link between a little piece of Scottish history from our area and William Shakespeare’s famous association with the Blackfriars theatre in London, and had to investigate further… When a collier found some unusual stones at Hilderston, near Cairnpapple in the Bathgate Hills, he couldn’t have imagined the stir in London his discovery would cause. He took a sample of what he suspected to be silver ore to a well-known metallurgist and mining engineer in Leadhills, Sir Bevis Bulmer. Bulmer was very excited; the silver potential was so promising that the landowner, Sir Thomas Hamilton, went ahead in early 1607 and took a mining lease for Hilderston from King James VI. In fact he took a lease for all mineral rights in the area, and the king, with whom he was on friendly terms, made him “Master of the Metals and Minerals whatsoever within His Highness’s Kingdom of Scotland.” Hamilton and Bulmer started exploiting the silver at Hilderston straight away. They were presumably smelting on site; we have no details of the process, except that an old map of area shows a smelter house and furnace at the mines. The Bathgate discovery caused a lot of excitement in London. Four years 8 | KONECT BALERNO
previously, shortly after his coronation in 1603 uniting the crowns of England and Scotland, James VI had expressed concern about the depletion of England’s silver mines, and had already discussed new prospecting projects with Sir Bulmer. Scotland had previously relied on English mines for silver; perhaps James was keen to prove what his native kingdom could contribute. Robert Cecil (Lord Salisbury) described the silver as “the best token that ever I received out of that kingdom, or any other kingdom of that quality.” The Crown automatically
The King was furious and banned any other plays dealing with contemporary events had rights to a tenth of all metal output and by the end of 1607 the Hilderston mine was reported to the Privy Council as making £500 profit per month. King James sent a commission to investigate and bring back ten tonnes of ore for testing at the Tower of London. Hilderston was described as being “apparently inexhaustible.” The first large samples of ore on their way to London were lost at sea in December 1607, but by February 1608 ten tonnes had been
procured, with Thomas Hamilton’s co-operation, barrelled and taken to the Tower for testing. Initial results were promising and by May 1608 Hilderston was taken over by the Crown and put under the management of Bulmer. (The legality of the takeover was questionable and Hamilton was later paid £60,000 Scots in compensation – a rather good deal for him). At the time of the Crown takeover, fifty nine men were employed at the mine producing ore from a single shaft which Bulmer had named “God’s Blessing,” because of “the wonderfull works of God, that he had seene, which never before, the like thereunto, within any of his Majesties kingdoms [were] known to be.” Another politician in London, Sir William Boyer, wrote in August 1608 that the mine “far exseeds annye that euer was in Garmanie.” In October 1608, the King imported miners from Germany and later from England. At least six further shafts were sunk. In expectation of the large quantities of rich ore, a processing plant was constructed at Linlithgow and a significant amount of money committed. The finishing touches were made to the smelting mill here in March 1609 - a boy was sent from Linlithgow to the mines at Hilderston to order metal to be brought to the mill, and wine, ale and bread

was laid on for the “meltars and workmen at the Melting Mill, the first day they began to melt.”
1910: A postcard showing the site of the silver mine.
In the meantime, trials in England on the sample ore were still on-going. The problem was they were returning different results for the yield of silver. Very thorough testing using different methods by different experts indicated by December 1608 that things were not all as they had initially seemed. The ore was of variable quality. One trial reported: “Until the same redd-mettle came unto 12 faddomes (18m) deepe, it remained still good; from thence unto 30 fathome (55m) deepe it proved nought.” In August 1609 a further 400 barrels of ore were taken from Hilderston to London. Reading about all the trials, it’s almost as if they were desperately willing for some good results to justify the nationalisation - which was starting to look rash. It took a long time to accept that the mine was in fact exhausted almost before it started; the best silver had been near the surface, and Hamilton had already taken it.
political furore as it included a slanderous representation of the King, his Scottish mine project and all his favourites. James was furious and banned any other plays dealing with contemporary events. Three of the actors were imprisoned; the author fled and the theatre company disbanded, allowing a new troupe, the “Kings Men” and their very politically careful playwright William Shakespeare – to move into Blackfriars.
A play called “The Silver Mine” was staged at Blackfriars in 1608 while the mine was being considered for Crown acquisition. It caused a
The accounts from May 1608 onwards demonstrate how unprofitable the nationalised silver mine was. Finally in March 1613
the Crown gave up. It was let to a private firm, and abandoned shortly afterwards. There was some mining in the same spot in the 18th century for lead and zinc. And an attempt in the 1870s to find nickel ore, but no metals of value were found. Today, you can see three depressions in the ground near the road which are remains of the 18th century shafts, and the ruins of a building which was associated with the silver mine. It’s a very quiet spot near Cairnpapple, and on a bleak day last month I enjoyed walking around the site and imagining the industry and excitement here, 400 years ago.

HOME IMPROVEMENT
on a budget You know the feeling - the kitchen cupboard door is about to fall off its hinges and you can’t bear to look at that burn-mark on your worktop any longer. There’s only one thing for it - you need a new kitchen. There’s just one snag – although you’ve set aside a budget, you can’t afford a brand-new, fully-fitted one. Don’t despair, there is a solution – it’s time for a kitchen revamp! A revamp can give your room a whole new lease of life, yet cost a fraction of the price of a brand new-kitchen. But, what exactly does a revamp involve? Here are some options to give your kitchen the wow factor without breaking the bank.
An accent on lighting - Every kitchen needs good ‘task’ lighting so you can see what you’re doing when preparing dinner. However, how about creating some ‘accent’ lighting too which is designed to focus on certain items such as ornaments or artwork. Flooring options - Now that you’ve saved some money on your units how about revamping your flooring as well. Choose between new tiles for a Mediterranean look, engineered-wood flooring for a more rustic feel, or hardwearing vinyl-tiles from a quality manufacturer such as Karndean. Creating space - Revamping your kitchen also gives you the chance to plan it around your changing needs. For example, if your children have flown the nest maybe you don’t need as many cupboards. Why not take one away and create space for a breakfast bar instead? And, by downsizing your dishwasher to a slimline version – you might find more room for a wine cooler! Sunday brunch with Prosecco anyone?
Replacing doors and worktops - Check the condition of your existing units. Are they solid enough? If so, you can simply choose new cupboard doors which will set the tone for your overall style. For example, opt for sleek, minimalist doors in a bold, contemporary colour to make a statement. Or, choose traditional Shaker doors to give your kitchen a homely, unfussy country-feel. Worktops can either complement or contrast with your doors and they come in a range of hardwearing materials that are designed to last. Upgrading appliances and sink taps - Upgrading your appliances is a great way to give your kitchen a shiny new look while saving energy costs. By simply replacing your doors and worktops instead of the whole kitchen, you could save enough to add a larder style unit with an integrated oven. Setting your oven at eye-level saves bending down to load up your Sunday roast. Modern ovens like the Neff ‘Slide & Hide’ oven has a door which, as the name suggests, slides underneath so you can get closer to it. Plus, it has an A energy rating which is better for the environment and easier on your pocket. If you don’t want to buy a new sink, you can simply upgrade your kitchen tap. It’s amazing the difference even that small change can make. If you use a lot of boiling water for tea or coffee, then invest in a Quooker instead. A Quooker is a tap that can deliver drink-ready boiling and cold water from the same unit. 24 | KONECT BALERNO
Choosing new SEE PAGE 26 New worktops will completely transform your existing kitchen and there are many hard-wearing materials to choose from depending on your needs.

(1) Granite - If you do a lot of cooking, granite worktops are ideal. Hardwearing and heat-resistant you can move hot pots from your hob to your worktop without fear of it marking. (2) Hardwood - Hardwood can last for years but will initially need sealed with oil over a period of time. Hardwoods such as teak or iroko are ideal for breakfast bars, island or around sink areas due to their water-resistant features. (3) Silestone - Silestone is made from 94% quartz which is hardwearing and highly scratch-resistant. It comes in a wide range of colours and is non-porous which means it won’t stain and is bacteria resistant – perfect if you need to be extra careful about hygiene. (4) Corian® - Corian® from DuPont is also hardwearing, tough, durable and non-porous but it has one other quality which sets it apart from most other worktops. Corian® can be moulded to suit different layouts so you can create one large area from one piece. This means no seams and no crevices for dirt and bacteria to gather.

THOUGHT FOR THE MONTH
LIFE CAN MAKE US VULNERABLE…. Few of us will go through life totally confident and feeling on top of things consistently, but for many of us, a challenging experience will help us to develop greater resilience, which equips us to bounce back better in the future. However it is worth remembering that for younger and/or more fragile personalities a challenging experience can really undermine self-confidence. The experience of being bullied by your peers either face to face or on social media, whether at school, at work or in a friendship group can be extremely undermining. Similarly a breakdown in family relationships or friendships can have consequences for our self-esteem. And living alone when your partner has died or left poses great challenges. How can we look out for one another? You can ask yourself questions about people you live near… have you seen them to talk to recently? Could you find a reason to knock on the door and introduce yourself? Giving a little time will mean a lot to someone who does not see many people.
In a family or a friendship group, trying to be nonjudgemental helps people to feel safe with you, and then maybe they will able to talk about any difficulties they are facing more openly. So ask yourself, is there something that you could try to do that would mean more than you can imagine to another person’s self worth?

VILLAGE PEOPLE
Jean Barton Playgroup was a new concept
Jean and playgroup children d (Caitlin B oing craft oddy at fa r right)
Jean Barton and her late husband Jim moved to Balerno 55 years ago. She raised three children, started the first playgroup, and has poured herself into the life of the community. Today I met a lady who recalls hearing the Declaration of War, watching British/German air battles from the big windows of the greystone school she attended, and being an evacuee. Most local people know Jean Barton as the founder of the Balerno Playgroup. Jean and Jim arrived in Balerno in 1962 with two boys and a baby girl, their pets, and a car that wouldn’t go. They made their home at Ladycroft, just across from St Mungo’s church building. Jim was an architect, and Jean stayed at home to raise the family. She grew vegetables and raspberries, made jam, and sewed. She kept hens and they had a horse too. It was a good life. When baby Jess was three, Jean wanted her to go to playgroup, as her older brothers had done. But there was no playgroup in the village. The 1,500 residents of the little mill town kept their children at home until they went to school. “Playgroup was a new concept,” says Jean. “I asked a friend if she would help me start one in my home, and that was the beginning of the Balerno Playgroup. We had just eight children at first.”
li n lo ok in g a t J e a n a npdh otC aositof B a le rn o ol d
The playgroup idea gradually caught on. “We were very child-focused,” says Jean. “Children came for two or three mornings or afternoons. We did crafts, singing, reading. And we took them on
walks too – some children were better walkers than others.” Most people worked at the paper mill, which stood on the site now occupied by the chippy and smaller Scotmid. “People walked up the road at six a.m. and then again at two,” Jean recalls. “And there was a night shift. Massive lorries went up and down the road, and you’d cower in the corner as they passed.” Jean ran her playgroup for 25 years. As it grew, she relocated – first to Dean Park Primary’s annexe and later to the community centre. Caitlin Boddy (née McKenzie) was one of her charges in the early ‘80s. Today Caitlin, who has a playgroup-age daughter, and Jean are still friends. When Jean retired, the children in her care went to Mrs Skelly’s playgroup, or else (later) to the school nursery. She then started volunteering with the Alzheimer’s group that meets at Dean Park Primary, eventually becoming their Coordinator. “I helped there for about 15 years, but had to stop when Jim got Alzheimer’s,” says Jean. During this period the Bartons moved to a smaller house, where she continues to grow vegetables and raspberries. Jim, known as “Skip” to his Scouts group, passed away seven years ago. Church has always been a big part of Jean’s life, and she has been an active member of the Balerno Fair Trade group. She volunteers at The Mill café, and over the years has taken part in a number of initiatives promoting justice and peace. The Village People column is contributed by Suzanne Green. Suzanne, a freelance writer/editor, lives in Balerno and writes regularly for Konect. She is married to Andy and they have two adult daughters. KONECT BALERNO | 35

MONEY MATTERS
EQUITY RELEASE
interest accrued must be paid to the equity release provider.
Equity release is a means by which you can release some of the cash that is tied up in your home in the form of a loan. You can choose to enjoy a cash lump sum, a regular income for life or even a combination of both.
The big disadvantage is that your heirs will on your death inherit less because they will not benefit from the full value of your property, it will simply be the full value of the property less the loan and the interest that has accrued during your lifetime.
In the current climate retired people who have been using interest from savings to supplement their income have found that the interest rates have collapsed and hence their income has reduced. In these cases, provided that they are a homeowner, then they can use equity release to supplement their income. You must be a homeowner aged at least 60. The amount of money you can release depends on your age and the value of your property. You retain full ownership of your home and are free to live in it for as long as you like. Interest on the loan accrues at a fixed rate until the property is sold and then the total loan plus the
p mm
Equity release should only be used as a last resort after you have considered all other sources of capital and/or income. That said, in many cases it is the ideal solution to a problem for people who are property rich and cash or income poor. Equity Release should not be entered into lightly and the appropriate professional advisers must always be consulted.

FOOD & DRINK
Spring, re-birth and a festival of fertility after the lean times of winter all contribute to our celebration rituals of Easter. The two main foods in Christian Europe have been lamb and eggs, symbols of hope and plenty for millennia. Many traditions of decorating eggs, making breads enriched with eggs, exchanging gifts of eggs and eating spring lamb can be directly traced to ancient pagan Gods of Greece and the Middle East. The giving of chocolate eggs has been a huge marketing opportunity for the confectionery industry; the fantastically elaborate gold and bejewelled eggs given by the Tsars to their family are perhaps the most luxurious gift eggs; but the tradition of decorating eggs can still be enjoyed by you and your children with a few hard boiled eggs and poster paint. Then they can be rolled downhill till the shells crack off! In Greece they dye eggs dark red and bake them into a nest of rich milk-bread. The Italians make an egg rich cake and in Germany they dye eggs and make special bread with fruit, poppy seeds and marzipan. Eggs are very easy to digest and are a nourishing food. In Larousse Gastronomique (The French Dictionary of Food) there are 30 pages of recipes for eggs, either poached or boiled and made interesting by the addition of anything from foie gras and truffles, a cheese sauce or okra and prawns. Temperature is critical when cooking eggs. Storing eggs in the fridge makes it even more difficult to get things just right. Alas most houses don’t have a cool, airy larder, but if you can, try to keep eggs away from a fridge. As theshell is semi-permeable, eggs absorb the flavours around them and the fridge taste is often what makes people dislike boiled or poached eggs. The most difficult egg dish to prepare perfectly is the most simple. It is the subject of a wonderful essay by Elizabeth David and the test piece in the 2014 Helen Mirren film 54 | KONECT BALERNO
“The Hundred Foot Journey”; an omelette. It is worth learning the tricks because an omelette and a salad is a perfect, quick meal.
OMELETTE (Per person) • 2 large fresh eggs • Walnut sized lump of butter • Salt • Pepper • A splash of cold water • Chopped chives or parsley or marigold petals METHOD: Heat a small frying pan. (There are many expensive, specifically designed pans to make omelettes; they are lovely tools but are not necessary) Crack the eggs into a mug or small bowl. Add a grind of pepper, a pinch of salt and a splash of cold water. If you like add the chopped herbs and mix it well with a fork. Have everything else you want for the meal ready. Now cook the omelette: Melt the butter in the pan but don’t let it become brown. Pour in the mixed eggs really quickly and using the fork, pull the setting sides of the egg mixture to the middle of the pan. How set you want the finished dish is very personal; I like the last bit just not quite set. Hold the pan above your plate and roll the omelette on to it. The whole operation will take about 3 minutes! Eggs can become the most amazing pudding; from meringues to soufflés, roulades or baked custard. Whipped eggs trap air which expands on cooking and as the protein sets a light structure is supported. Perhaps one of the cleverest egg dishes is Norwegian Omelette, otherwise known as Baked Alaska.
FAST ASSEMBLY REQUIRED!
BAKED ALASKA • Plain madeira sponge cake from which you cut a good 2” thick slice • Blackcurrant or raspberry jam • The whites of 3 large eggs • 6oz sugar • A block of vanilla or chocolate ice cream, cut so its footprint is just smaller than the cake (Keep it in the freezer until the last minute) METHOD: Heat the oven to 180oC Make the meringue: Whip the whites till stiff and then with the beater still turning gradually add the sugar and continue beating till the meringue is really thick and stands in peaks. The rest is a fast assembly job! Put the cake on a shallow oven proof dish. Spread with jam. Do not let it dribble down the sides. Place the block of ice cream on top and then cover the whole lot with a thick layer of meringue. Bake for 10 minutes till the spikes of meringue are a pale biscuit colour. The cake and meringue are insulation and the trapped air prevents the ice-cream melting.
EGG-CEPTIONAL! - “It is worth learning the tricks because an omelette and a salad is a perfect, quick meal”
The monthly recipe and food notes are contributed by Anne Pinkerton. Anne is a local cook who believes that everybody can enjoy seasonal food and take pleasure in preparing meals for their friends and family. KONECT BALERNO | 55
