This month we caught up with a couple who are heading to compete in Glasgow this month. If you use the sports centre at Heriot Watt you may have spotted them practising there.... we wish them the best of luck! See the interview on pages 8-9. Whether your garden is large or small, this is the time of year to really enjoy it. A beautiful garden can mean a lot of work and we've got a column on what needs to be done in the garden this month – but also some pictures of local gardens, some of which are low maintenance and equally enjoyable.
Message from the Editor
The What's On section in this issue contains ideas for local activities for children and families during the summer holidays. And all our regular columns are here – Village People, Walk feature and the ever-practical Money Matters, Thought for the Month- as well as a few other articles of local interest. Remember if you're involved in a community group or not-for-profit club locally, details can be listed free of charge in the back of konect. See page 65 for details. Have a great July!

Hammer throwing couple head to the Games Karen Murray catches up with local athletes heading to the Commonwealth Games Hammer-throwing couple Susan McKelvie and Andy Short have had their place at the Commonwealth Games in the bag since last year, but as the Opening Ceremony of the Games draws nearer their excitement is mounting. I spoke to the pair who live in Broxburn – grabbing them individually between work and training in a spare moment – to get a little insight into them, their sport and their hopes.
A grassy space between Edinburgh Airport and Turnhouse Golf Course, it has no turning circle or safety nets and no way of marking the distance thrown, but no one bothers them and they have worked on their hammer throwing techniques here for several years. Andy Short, Susan’s partner and fellow hammer thrower, loves training on this bit of land. Unlike Susan who is representing Scotland at her first
Susan is a local girl who began her love of hammer throwing by joining an athletics club in Livingston. “I started out running at the age of nine, but then moved through all the different disciplines until at 15 I got to the stone throwing ones.” However, at 5’3”, Susan was considered too short for shot put and discus and decided to give hammer throwing a go. She was a natural and went from strength to strength moving around the country to train and hone her discipline. She is also short for hammer throwing but has not let her stature hinder her, throwing a personal best of 65.03m. I asked if that would give her a medal at the Games and she said she’s hoping to throw 66m+ on the day. “At the last Games 64m got a silver so I am quietly confident that I can get a medal. I definitely want to be top five, a medal would be great and naturally if I could get the gold I would be over the moon,” laughs Susan. Regarding training, it is obviously difficult trying to juggle work and training but as a PE teacher with Falkirk Council, Susan does get the long holidays which helps and has understanding bosses who ensure she gets time to train. In fact Susan and Andy have a rather unusual training spot. While they use the more traditional venues of Craigswood Sports Centre and Heriot Watt for weightlifting practice, they have a special place they go to get away from it all.

Commonwealth Games, Andy has made two previous Games. From the Isle of Wight, Andy threw for England at the 2006 Games but after relocating to Scotland by the 2010 Delhi Games he was throwing for Scotland. He is the current British Champion with a personal best of just short of 73m. “It was a strange feeling throwing at the Delhi Games when Susan has just missed out on qualifying,” he told me, adding that he is over the moon that they are both representing Scotland together at the Home Games. “I just missed out on a medal at Delhi and am determined to get one this time around.”
Both Susan and Andy were coached for many years by the same coach –Alan Bertram MBE. He inspired the pair to be at the top of their game and it was a devastating blow to them when he passed away last year. “It was his wish that we be trained by Lorraine Shaw who is based in Gloucestershire,” explained Susan. That means pre-Commonwealth Games training down in England for the pair but they have understanding employers and are taking all the holiday time they can. Lorraine was coached by Bertram to Commonwealth gold at the Manchester Games in 2002 and she and Susan have been friends since childhood so she is perfect coach. As a PE teacher, Susan has been encouraged and supported by her pupils all the way and knows that many of them will be in the stands at Hampden watching her and Andy throw. Naturally there will be many friends and family from West Lothian in the crowd too. “Being in front of a home crowd will be amazing,” she states and Andy adds that he is sure
the home crowd will give them an advantage. “I can’t imagine what it is going to be like but I can’t wait to find out,” Susan added. Hammer throwing might be a solitary sport but as with any athletic discipline, there is always help behind the scenes. “We can’t get to where we are all alone,” states Susan, giving her thanks to Bruce Robb who helps the pair with weightlifting and Michael Smith who does their sports massage. On the day however, it will be just Susan and Andy out there in the throwing circle and we wish them all the best of luck. Bring home the medals guys!
How does hammer throwing work? Athletes throw a metal ball (16lb/7.26kg for men, 4kg for women) for distance that’s attached to a grip by a steel wire no longer than 1.22m while remaining inside a 7-ft (2.135m) diameter circle. In order for the throw to be measured the ball must land inside a marked 35-degree sector and the athlete must not leave the circle before it has landed. The thrower usually makes three or four spins before releasing the ball. Athletes will commonly throw four or six times per competition.
What is the history of hammer-throwing? Legend traces the concept of the Hammer Throw to approximately 2000BC and the Tailteann Games in Tara, Ireland, where the Celtic warrior Culchulainn gripped a chariot wheel by its axle, whirled it around his head and threw it a huge distance.

Summer Gardens By Anne Pinkerton High summer; everything in the garden is in flower or growing fast. It's a time to sit back and enjoy it, and also the season to think ahead and plan, make ready for winter and keep the abundance looking good into autumn. As July is also holiday time it's difficult for a dedicated gardener to drag themselves away because there is a lot of work to be done now. The first task is to keep plants happy in what we hope will be warm, dry weather. Remember wind can do as much harm to container plants as lack of rain. As plants grow they may need support and it is surprising how things shoot up in a week or two if left to their own devices.
Check before you go away. If you are going away see if you can find a friend to water the outdoor pots and containers, bribe them with the chance to pick the flowers or harvest any herbs and veg you have. Do the same for them in exchange. If you don't “dead-head” and keep containers watered things will run to seed, wilt and even die. Plant another container now to be interesting when your summer bedding will be over. Some vegetables are very good looking and a late salad crop will do well in a deep container. Garden feature continues over ...

Family garden in Balerno This garden was a complete jungle when the current owners moved in. Dan Greaves who did the overhaul and re-design says, “it was like Jurassic Park. We had to rip out the extremely matured and overgrown garden.” The owners wanted a garden that would be suitable for children to play in and that was manageable. The mirrors on the fence were there from the previous garden.

(above) Small garden makeover This is the garden of a small flat in Longstone, Edinburgh. It was an empty space with just bark chips to keep the weeds down before it was given a makeover with turf laid, edges done and a mini patio area installed. Work carried out by Dan Greaves Landscaping continued from page14 ... If you plant the rooted herb plants sold by the supermarket they do very well after hardening off and give you an instant late herb garden. Parsley, thyme, sage and other woody herbs will survive all winter; though coriander, chives and basil will die at the first frost. As the summer progresses gaps will appear in the flowerbeds. Cheat; buy in plants and fill the spaces to ensure a continuation of colour and interest. Garden centres always display their stock looking at its best so for instant effect bought in plants are a good solution. It is the best time of year to check the condition of all garden wood work (sheds, seating, fences) and do

the necessary tending, while it is dry, to preserve and maintain it. Before you go away it might be worth investing in a water butt to help with the holiday care of your garden. Ponds and garden water features will perhaps need attention now. The green filament which can suffocate a pond can be treated by regular removal by hand or by chemical treatment. Be careful though, because there will be frogs, newts and other wind-life in even the smallest patch of water. Many birds, bees and other insects use garden water to keep alive. For this reason it is important to keep such features and bird baths full in summer. Thin or weed the most vigorous water plants or they will take over the pond and not leave any open water. Spring flowering shrubs should be pruned and hedges given an extra trim to prevent snow damage and keep their shape through winter. Roses need to be deadheaded to give a second flowering and suckers should be rubbed out.

(left) Small local potted herb patio with pop-up mini greenhouse continued from page18 ... Start thinking about next spring and order bulb catalogues from your favourite supplier. If you would like to have a fruit tree plan for it and be ready to plant in September or October. Winter salads can be planted now in a greenhouse, cold frame or poly- tunnel. This is the best time of year to check the condition of all garden wood work and do the necessary tending, while it is dry, to preserve and maintain it. If you want to do major works get estimates and plan the work for the autumn before the frosts set in. Landscape gardeners like to plan their winter work too. If this was not enough to keep you busy there is always the lawn! Regular cutting, but not too much if it is hot and dry, helps keep the whole garden looking neat. Now is the time for a summer feed especially if you forgot to feed the grass in the spring.

Seven Hundred Years of Baberton! By Liz Beevers
Seven hundred years of Baberton history will be revealed this month, or some of it anyway, with the publication of the booklet 'Baberton Mains: Past and Present'.
Champion heavy horses, dairy cows and pigs were all raised on these rich farmlands while their tenants coped with losing land to the canal in the 1820s and the railway in the 1840s.
The product of eighteen months detailed research as explained by Helen Ogg of Baberton Mains History Group in the May issue of konect, it starts with an entertaining history of Baberton Estate, its Big House and the quirky families which have lived there since 1320.
There were accidents and tragedies, too, recorded in The Scotsman of the day, before the farms were sold onto Wimpey in the Seventies. There are interesting stories about the construction of the modern Wimpey estate and its forty years of life.
Then it follows the history of the farms of Fernieflat in Colinton Parish and Baberton Mains in Currie.
Baberton Mains Past and Present
In the Eighties the residents had to cope with being hemmed in on the north eastern edge by the Sighthill to Baberton part of the City Bypass, replacing the pleasant shortcut across cow pastures with a roaring highway. The final chapter documents the brilliant history quilt that the Group worked on with the schoolchildren of Primary 6, Juniper Green. A full colour photo of it adorns the back cover. Now you can obtain the booklet for £5 (or £4 each for three copies or more) and read the details for yourselves. 'Baberton Mains: Past and Present' is available at Juniper Green’s Community Market on June 28th and from 40 Baberton Mains Drive, 27 Baberton Mains Way, 25 Baberton Mains Bank, 495 Lanark Road or 1 Woodhall Terrace. The image on the front cover of Baberton Mains: Past and Present is "Winter Tree, Baberton Mains - 1938" by Edwin Lucas. 1

Richard McArthur: How can we help the world’s hungry? by Suzanne Green
Former vet Richard McArthur has lived in Balerno for 20 years. He is Associate Minister at St Mungo’s Church, where his responsibilities include Bible teaching, world mission partnerships and running Alpha courses.
raised will be split evenly between Tear Fund’s “One Big Mountain” appeal, helping to provide Ugandan communities with drinking water; and the Maseno Project in western Kenya.
His wife Margaret is an occupational health doctor, and they have four children: David, Sarah, Mark and Joanna. According to current world statistics, one billion people live in extreme poverty. And one in eight people is undernourished. Wanting to respond to this great need, in 2011 Richard McArthur challenged the members of St Mungo’s to join his family in eating only rice and beans for five days. The money everyone saved on their normal food bill would be collected and given to a charity committed to helping the poor.
Veg chilli: Eating simply releases funds for giving
“The challenge was taken up,” says Richard, “and more than £12,000 was raised – more than I had expected! And people commented that making do with less had made them sensitive to the needs of the poor.” Since that time, Richard has led the church in an annual challenge. This year’s effort, 1-8 June, was called “Help the Hungry (and Thirsty). Participants ate on less than £1/day for five days and drank only water. The £22,490

St Mungo’s has partnered with the Maseno Project since 2007. Through this initiative, Farmers’ Field Schools have been established, helping farmers significantly improve their crop yields. This means food for their families and communities, as well as money to pay their children’s school fees. “I have a passion for helping the poor,” Richard explains, “because the Bible makes it clear that God cares deeply for the world’s poor.” But why do people need to experience the “hungry” part of the challenge, I wondered. Why not just ask them to write a cheque? “There are two good reasons,” says Richard. “First, cutting down your food bill is a great way of releasing funds to give to the poor without financial implications. Second, going without helps sensitize us to the daily food struggles faced by so many people: the lack of meat, the monotony of the diet, the concern mothers feel at not being able to properly feed their children…” Richard’s own children have obviously been influenced by this focus on helping the poor. Sarah (17), who visited the Maseno Project with a church team in 2010, leaves in October for nine months in DR Congo. There she will work with Christian mission agency AIM, teaching English and doing youth/children’s work. When she returns, she will study sustainable development at St. Andrews University. Mark (15) commented that he was happy eating as they did during the “Help the Hungry” week, and suggested they do it once a week. Smiling, Richard says, “So that’s what we are going to do.”

Money Matters
Salary Sacrifice By Personal Money Management What is it?
Salary sacrifice is when an employee gives up the right to part of their salary. The ‘sacrifice’ is made and the employer pays an equivalent contribution to the employee’s pension plan.
Tax and National Insurance (NI) Advantage
There are Tax and NI advantages for both the employer and the employee. An employee pays tax and NI on his salary but neither is payable on the pension contribution. The employer therefore saves 13.8% in NI and this saving may also be added to the employee’s pension plan, should they wish to.
Examples A Consider a basic rate tax payer who is contributing
£1,000 of their income into a pension plan. Normally the £1000 would be invested in the pension plan. On the other hand if the contribution had been made via salary sacrifice then the employee would
38 konect
save £120 (12%) and the employer would save £138 (13.8%). This is a combined saving of £258 a 25% increase in pension contributions to £1258. B Consider someone earning £50,000 who sacrifices £3,000. The employer NI saving is £414 so the pension contribution would be £3414. Prior to sacrifice the employee’s disposable income would be £34,661.60. After sacrifice the disposable income would be £32861.60. Thus the net cost to the employee is £1,800 but his pension fund has increased by £3,414 i.e. a guaranteed return of 89% before any growth.
Final Points
Salary sacrifice only applies to future earnings. Once a salary has been paid it cannot be sacrificed. As always professional advice should be sought before entering into a salary sacrifice arrangement. Written by Dr PM Marshall. PhD, DipPFS, AFPC

Thought for the Month
The Difference a Dad Makes By Pat Banfill Summer holidays can be busy times but also times of opportunity, especially for dads. Research shows that young children are more prepared to start school if their dad has been involved in their life, the quality of play between a father and child affects the child’s self worth as a teenager, they are more likely to be better adapted to adult life, and have fewer mental health issues. So what can dads do during the summer holidays? Here are some suggestions… • Resolve to give your children some focussed time over the next six weeks. Decide to turn off your mobile and social media and give your undivided attention to the children for half an hour or an hour at a time.
• Plan ahead and stick to your commitment to give your children time. Put dates and times in your diary. Could you take time off during the holiday to join them in a fun activity or hobby? • Remember that your words of encouragement have the potential to build your children up like few other things will. Find something they are doing well and encourage them in it with positive praise. It is your privilege to enjoy life with your children, rediscover the art of fun and make their childhood a treasured memory. Have fun together over the holidays! Local Walk
A Walk in the Park by Karen Murray West Lothian is blessed with many green areas from wild life reserves to parks. I have strolled through many of these parks – some wilder than others. Polkemmet Country Park is one of the more organised parks incorporating a golf course, play park and of course the fabulous Owl Centre. I have only recently discovered however, that the art installation one can see from the M8 known as The Horn is also within the grounds of the park. This little nugget of information encouraged me to make a visit to the park and see if I could find the pathways to the Horn. There are several waymarked paths in the park and to help you find a route, and there are leaflets in the visitor centre. The route to the Horn is of course not the only one – you can wander all over the park on different paths, some muddier than others so you might need sturdy shoes. The park is really an idyllic little spot in the middle of the Central Belt with the River Almond tumbling

over rocks, pine trees and shrubs along the bank, swathes of bluebells (at the time of my visit), birdsong abounding and a sense of tranquillity. It is also pretty quick to get to since the new exit of the M8 was built at Hartlands. Follow the brown signs from the junction. Once parked, if you are off to see the Horn you follow the blue route signs from the Visitor Centre. Pass in front of a bowling green, and just after it, leave the track you had been following to take a grass path down to the River Almond. Here, you go left, downstream. On reaching a wooden bridge, don't cross it but carry straight on, along a track by the river. Pass another bridge, next to a golf hole, and follow the track round to the left to reach the Horn. You can make the route a circular one but returning to the bridge by the golf hole, crossing over and taking the path to the right. On reaching a marker post, go left to follow the river to a bridge – which
The Horn Part of the M8 Art Project, devised by Art in Partnership in 1992 to radically transform the motorway through the creation of a series of major artworks, the 80 foot high ‘Horn’ by Matthew Dalziel and Louise Scullion transmits recorded music, poetry and prose. I have to say that I didn’t actually hear any music and I’m not sure how that music would enhance one’s travels along the M8 in a vehicle but it is nonetheless an interesting piece of art to take a walk to. you cross then head back along the track to the Visitor Centre. Follow the track taken at the start, back to the Visitor Centre. If you are with a bunch of kids, it is then probably time to head for the play park or the Owl Centre. However, there are plenty more paths to follow and if you have the time, it is well worth just meandering through the varied vegetation and wider green spaces enjoying the foliage and whatever flowers are in season as well as the fauna. You are sure to spot birds, squirrels and depending on the time of day you are walking, you may even spy deer.

Art In The Park by Colinton Village Events Art in the Park is Colinton’s largest community event. It is a volunteer-run day in historic Spylaw Park and will take place on Sunday 31st August, or Sunday September 7th if postponed due to a bad weather forecast.
There will be prizes for the most fun, creative or outlandish creations following the Hat parade at 3pm. So get out your scraps and feathers and glue and felt and go wild - we want to see as many ‘mad hatters’ out there as possible!
Art in the Park began life in 2005 as a small art fair and has gone strength to strength combining local arts and crafts with a village fair of activities. CVE Group’s committee has been busy planning for a fun-filled day and we expect several thousand people to attend.
To further add to this year’s festivities, the Committee has constructed a giant piñata – a papier mâché donkey per the Mexican tradition, filled with toys and sweets. It will, of course, be sporting a fabulous hat! We expect it to provide another opportunity for budding artists to show us what they’re made of. On the day we’re inviting everyone to come and help decorate the donkey to create a stunning community art centrepiece for the event. At 3pm, the donkey will be ceremoniously hoisted from a tree in the centre of the park, and children can take turns giving it a good old bash to break it open and share in the spoils
Highlights include: • • • • • • • • •
Live music and dance. A popular Children’s Area including face-painting and storytelling. Art and craft stalls selling everything from paintings to jewellery (and much more!). Information stalls of various types including many local associations and member clubs. Food stalls to suit every taste and appetite. Old-fashioned games including a coconut shy and stocks. A wee train (never mind the trams, take the train!). Piñata explosion! Hat parade!
This year we’ve decided on a hat theme and competition to gives visitors a chance to make their creative mark.

CVE Committee member Alex Lambert is ‘taking a lead’ on this year’s dog show. Alex said: “It’s going to be bigger and better than ever with back to back categories running from 11am to 3pm - it will be doggy pandemonium, in the best possible way! We’ve got all the old favourites – Most like Owner, Agility, Best in Show – but loads of new ones too, including Dog with the Most Fabulous Hat!” Books in good condition are needed for CVE’s book stall and can be left at Patsy's (Downes Greengrocer, 38 Bridge Road, Colinton). If you would like to support our adult and children’s tombola stalls by donating a prize, please hand it in to Colinton Arts, 52 Bridge Road. Potential stallholders and performers should contact CVE at colintonvillage@gmail.com and we will do our best to accommodate requests, space permitting. Join us for a great day out - browse the stalls, have a picnic lunch, enter your loved one in the dog show, listen to music - there really is something for everyone at Art in the Park! Keep checking Facebook and our website www. colintonvillage.com for further developments and event timetables.
