TO OUR JUNE EDITION

THIS ISSUE

J

une is the month many of us are thinking about summer holidays, especially families with school children. So it may seem a little early for a “back to school” article, but the Charity of the Month feature in this issue is about school uniforms and is a bit special – turn to pages 8-9 to see why we’re running it this month. Many of us are not going away over the summer, but there is plenty on locally to have some great days out, and of course with the Pentlands on our doorstep there is always somewhere to go when the weather is good. If you’ve never taken part in one of the Natural Heritage Officer wildlife surves in the hills, why not give one a try over the summer? Suzanne interviewed the Convener of the Pentland Singers for the Village People column, and a new entry in the Clubs & Classes information – the Juniper Green Board-Gamers have a wee piece on page 57. Once again, thanks for reading Konect and supporting local businesses and organisations.

CHARITY OF THE MONTH

Edinburgh School Uniform Bank “It was one of those times when you think, ‘I’ll just help my friend out a bit with her project’ and before you know it you’re fully involved in running a very busy charity!” says Balerno resident Linda Russell. The project was what is now the Edinburgh School Uniform Bank (ESUB). It started as one of Linda’s friends in Edinburgh keen to fill an increasing need for many kids not able to get new school uniform due to financial hardship. Going to school in the “wrong” clothes, children are vulnerable to bullying, social exclusion and low self esteem; the knock-on effects on their education are significant. I met Linda and her fellow volunteer Julia Grindley in Balerno to find out more. “Families are referred to us by professionals such as head teachers or social workers. They apply for a school pack which we then assemble from donated items, and we send it back to the referrer.” It sounds simple, but there is a huge amount of work and coordination involved. “People are incredibly generous with their donations, and when all our living rooms started being taken over by uniform and other school equipment, we realised we had to get a premises!” says Julia. They were lucky to acquire the use of a room at Balerno High School to store, sort and pack everything. 8 | BALERNO

SPONSOR A CHILD “Over the summer, we’re looking for supporters to sponsor a child. We give you the age and gender of the child in need, and you can donate a set of school uniform and equipment such as pencil case and stationery for her/ him.” The community was incredibly generous with the Sponsor a Child appeal last summer, and the ESUB are hoping for a good response this summer too. Alternatively you can donate just an item or two – pick up a pack of polo shirts or a pair of trousers while you’re doing your shopping. Additional items such pencil cases, lunch bags and stationery are welcome too. All the shops will have their “Back to School” ranges in store this month before the holidays! The local drop-off point for donations is: • • • •

Balerno High School (near the entrance to the pool & gym halls), 5 Bridge Road, Balerno, EH14 7AQ Riccarton Garden Centre, Riccarton Mains Road, Currie, EH14 5AA Currie Library, 210 Lanark Road West, Currie, EH14 5NX Currie Community Centre, 280 Lanark Road West, Currie EH14 5RU (Saturday mornings in term time only)

There are many other drop-off locations throughout Edinburgh, so do spread the word. “We prefer to use new clothes,” says Linda. “We don’t want to hand out anything that is not in excellent condition. It’s about respecting the recipients.” ESUB handed out over 300 packs of uniforms last year and this year demand is likely to be higher. “The number of @KonectDirectory

referrals has taken off exponentially in the past couple of years. Families experiencing financial hardship come from all walks of life. In particular, we get referrals from Women’s Shelters – sadly it is not unusual for a woman to have to flee domestic violence and leave her home with the children and nothing else. Imagine what it’s like for the children starting at a new school in a different area and not being able to have a decent set of appropriate uniform.” SUMMER PACKING PARTY! Over the summer, Linda and Julia would like to host small Packing Parties where you are invited to get a few friends together and come to Balerno High School to spend an hour or two packing and blethering. There might even be home-baking! “We’re not asking for a regular commitment, but if you can manage a one-off during our busy time it would make a huge difference to how many we can get out to families in time for the new term,” says Linda. To donate items, sponsor a child, arrange a summer packing party, refer a family, or to get involved in any way with Edinburgh School Uniform bank, please contact them, they will be delighted to hear from you! Website: www.schoolbank-westlothian.org Facebook: The School Bank West Lothian Email: enquiry@schoolbank-westlothian.org

Helen-Jane interviewed Linda Russell and Julia Grindley in Balerno for this article. Helen-Jane is the editor of Konect magazines. Edinburgh School Uniform Bank is a Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation (SCIO) number SC047524. “In the referral you are told the age and gender of the child and it is fun to add in extra items such as accessories”

HOME IMPROVEMENT

brilliant bathroom

Lighting

Use a range of light fittings for a flexible scheme, for brisk morning ablutions to leisurely evening baths.

In the morning, you’ll need bright, efficient light in the bathroom but for a soak in the tub you’ll want soft, relaxing lighting. A lighting scheme for a bathroom requires careful consideration and should be planned at the same time as the plumbing, considering the availability and direction of natural light, who uses the bathroom, what for and when, and the overall style you require. It should be flexible and combine directional task lights with adjustable general background light – and using fittings suitable for wet and steamy conditions.

BATHROOM LIGHTING REGULATIONS

Bathroom lighting regulations are strict. The lights you choose must have a suitable IP (ingress protection) rating, which relates to how close to water the fitting will be. Typically, the room is divided into three zones. Zone 0 is inside the bath or shower, so fittings must be immersion-proof, rated at least IP67 and low voltage. Zone 1 is the area above the bath or shower, to a height of 2.25m from the floor, and a minimum rating of IP45 is required (though most shower lights are rated at IP65). Zone 2 is outside the bath and shower, reaching 60cm on either side and 2.25m from the floor; any area within 60cm of a tap is also considered within zone 2. Here, a rating of at least IP44 is required. Outside these areas there are no specific IP requirements, though experts recommend fittings with a minimum rating of IP20. You should always consult a qualified electrician.

For washing, shaving and putting on make-up, it’s useful to install bright, ‘working’ lights above the bath, shower and basin areas, with additional lighting for any remaining dark areas. Use mirrors to reflect light around the room and make it seem brighter. All-purpose downlights set into the ceiling are neat, and small, directional lights on tracks are useful, too, and come in a range of inexpensive styles.

Mirrors and mirrored cabinets with integral lighting are a great two-in-one solution; alternatively light a conventional mirror with theatre-style bulbs all around or wall lamps on either side. When placing lights make sure the lights is even, and avoid a single, very bright light from above. Supplement ceiling lights with LED strips behind baffles or panels. Other ideas include: storage units incorporating lighting; uplighters in flooring; a remote control LED colour-changing lamp; basin taps with a water-activated LED light; illuminated rainfall shower heads; and low-level lighting that comes on automatically when someone enters the room – great for night-time toilet visits. For real luxury, install two bathroom lighting circuits – one for everyday lights, and the other for ambient dimmable lights. Finally, candlelight is ideally suited to relaxing in the bathroom. @KonectMagazines

HEALTH

Local Opportunities for Older People It can be hard to know what’s going on in your local area and how you can access the support and services you need.

This becomes especially difficult when our lives are changing, for example after a fall that knocks our confidence or after the death of a loved one. Our Community Navigator and a team of friendly local volunteers will support you to find out what is on in your local area, and how you can access the support you need, in the way that you want. Community Navigators provide regular Information Stations in the places that people are likely to be, such as shopping centres, libraries and supermarkets. Information Stations not only include a friendly face but also a wealth of knowledge about the local services, support, social groups and activities tailored for older people. Look out for your local Information Station in

THOUGHT FOR THE MONTH

Is there enough RED in your life? A basic way to look after our mental health is to keep an eye on the RED in our lives. R is for rest, E is for exercise and D is for diet. Elsewhere in Konect you will find ideas for making the most of our local area for walks, and also lists of clubs and activities that involve exercise. Also from time to time there are recipes for interesting food that you can cook for yourself or for your family. However there are not many adverts for rest as such, except if you count holidays or sales of bedding, so what does rest mean?

How do we know when we have enough rest and what about having too much leisure and not enough to do? Going back to the natural rhythms of life helps us answer these questions. In a 24 hour day, how much sleep do we need? And can we intersperse activity with shortish times of rest? In a 7 day week, can we count some days as generally more restful than others? Do we choose to not ‘work’ on one or two or more days in the week. In a month of 28-31 days, can we have a few days away from the daily routine? And is a year of 12 months can we take some holidays of a week or more? So as we get into summer, give some thought to the RED in your life and enjoy making small changes which might really help! Thought for the Month is contributed by Pat Banfill, Pastoral Assistant St Mungo’s Church, Balerno & Livingston - www.stmungos.org

MONEY MATTERS

SCOTLAND’S NEW INCOME TAX SYSTEM It is possible that you are not aware that Scotland now has a different Income Tax system to the rest of the United Kingdom. Seemingly, the original tax system wasn’t confusing enough. On 14th December 2017 the Scottish Government announced new Scottish Income Tax rates to apply for the 2018/19 tax year. These rates are different to the rest of the UK. They have introduced five different tax rates; a Starter rate at 19% (if you earn between £11,850 and £13,850), a Base rate of 20% (if you earn between £13,851 and £24,000), an Intermediate rate of 21% (if you earn between £24,001 and £43,430), a Higher rate of 41% (if you earn between £43,431 and £150,000) and a Top rate of 46% if you earn over £150,000.

28 | BALERNO

Tax Code - If you receive a Notice of Coding then your tax code will be prefaced with the letter S. Pensions - If you are paying into a Personal Pension then you automatically get tax relief at 20%. If you pay tax at 19% you will still get relief at 20% but the Inland Revenue will not chase you for the extra 1%. If you are in the Intermediate rate of 21% then the onus will be on you to claim the extra 1% through self-assessment. For Higher and Top rate payers they will be used to claiming back the extra tax relief through their tax returns. Winners and Losers - If you earn less than £33,000 you will pay less but if you earn more then you will pay more tax than in 2017/2018. Should you have any queries regarding your own tax situation contact HMRC in the first instance. The Money Matters column is contributed by Personal Money Matters. This month’s column by David Henderson BA, DipFA.

TECHNOLOGY

It’s amazing to think that we were still getting snow back in March: just weeks later and it’s June, which even the UK usually manages to get through without any blizzards. We might even get a long hot summer – and if we do, technology is happy to help. If you’re planning to party on the summer equinox, the UE Boom 2 portable speaker is really great for outdoor entertaining. It’s loud but not too loud, portable but not too small, and it’s waterproof because it’s sold in Britain. At around £93 it’s pricier than many but is solid, sounds great and is well made – plus the battery lasts for 15 hours of tunes from a single charge. If you’re barbecuing, the superb Looftlighter (around £45 on eBay or £55 in the shops) can ensure charcoal lights instead of smokes, and a BBQ thermometer can make sure food is properly cooked. We love the Thermapen instant read thermometer (around £50) but for an even more high-tech option there are Bluetooth-enabled meat thermometers that send readings to your smartphone so you don’t even need to lift the lid. Weber’s excellent iGrill 3 (£89.99) is one of the best around, but there are more affordable options too. There’s a new entry in the outdoor lighting market: Philips has brought its Hue smart lighting system to gardens too. We love Hue for its ability to create all kinds of light “recipes” and effects and to do so from a phone or tablet, and you can now mix 16 million different colours outdoors too. The catch, inevitably, is cost: the wall-mountable

@KonectMagazines

Lily spotlight is about £260 and the pedestal lamp around £125. It might be worth waiting for rivals to follow Philips’ lead: Hue-style indoor bulbs are widely available for a lot less than Philips chargers and we’d expect the same to happen with outdoor lighting too. Don’t try and cut corners with normal Hue bulbs in standard lamp fittings unless those fittings are large and properly waterproof. They might not work anyway: your home’s exterior walls may block the connection between the lights and the Hue hub, which has to be connected to your internet router. Sadly, living in the UK means even a warm day doesn’t stay too warm for long, and many of us turn to outdoor heating. Don’t buy a heater that heats the air; it’s a waste of money, because most of the energy goes on heating the air nobody’s actually in. Gas heaters are the least efficient: consider a modern infra-red (not near-infra-red) electric heater, which heats the surfaces it’s pointed at (including people), or a halogen one if you don’t want to spend a few hundred pounds. A good tabletop or free-standing halogen heater doesn’t cost too much to buy or run – about 9p per kilowatt hour, with heaters starting at around £39 – but make sure your seating area is sheltered as a stiff breeze can undo the work of any outdoor heater.

MOTORING

Electric Vehicle Myths Busted Confusion surrounds the running and operation of electric vehicles (EV). Here, we try to clear that up. 1. You can’t boil the kettle while charging an electric car A National Grid report warned that home networks might struggle to cope with high-capacity car charging. However, EV owners with a low-capacity home network wouldn’t have a high-capacity charger, so there’s little chance of the network being overloaded. 2. EVs are more expensive than petrol and diesel cars The base price of an EV will be slightly more expensive, although manufacturers compensate by offering a generous specification so that with the government’s £4,500 zero-emission vehicle grant taken into account, they’re a pretty good deal, plus have low running costs. What’s more, as EV technology becomes more prevalent, costs will reduce – the new Nissan Leaf starts at £1,500 less than the old one. 3. They’re more likely to catch fire in a crash Concerns about crash safety are largely driven by a couple of high-profile Tesla Model S fires in 2013. The EV maker upgraded its underbody battery pack protection in 2014 but also noted that the odds of fires in its cars were “five times lower than those of an average gasoline car”. 4. You can’t drive them in car washes or when it’s raining Manufacturers carefully seal all of the electrified components to make sure there aren’t any problems using car washes, or driving or charging in the rain. 5. You can’t go very far Most electric vehicles now have a range in excess of 150 miles, with 200 miles becoming the norm.

44 | BALERNO

6. There’s nowhere to charge them Long trips require a bit more planning, but charge point locator Zap Map indicates there are almost 15,000 connectors at more than 5,000 locations in the UK, with more added all the time. Plus, rapid chargers can provide 80 per cent of charge in about 30 minutes. 7. The batteries don’t last very long

Batteries do have a finite life but most manufacturers offer battery leasing for a monthly fee and will replace it for free when needed. Others offer replacement warranties, with five- to eight-year cover the norm.

8. EVs are less environmentally friendly across their life cycle The energy required to build an electric car can make it less environmentally friendly to produce than a traditionally fuelled car. However, a Norwegian study quoted by the BBC estimates an EV is about 10 per cent better over its life cycle, and that will continue to improve. 9. Battery disposal poses a huge environmental issue

It does, but the EV boom has encouraged lateral thinking to improve recycling rates, with companies taking used EV batteries for use elsewhere, such as home energy storage. 10. They’re boring to drive

Modern electric cars can be genuinely fun to drive, particularly thanks to the high-torque motors, which make acceleration brisk. Tesla takes this to extremes with its Model S, which reaches 60mph in less than three seconds – comparable to the new McLaren Senna supercar, with its petrolpowered twin-turbo V8. This article was contributed by James Baggot.

LOCAL WALK

IN THE

PENTLANDS Picture me if you can, standing on one leg which was slowly sinking into the mud, while trying to maintain my balance with my walking stick and attempting to get a stockinged foot back into the other waterlogged boot, embedded in cloying mud. Suction effect had removed it from my foot as we attempted to walk across very sodden and marshy ground. This picture will give you some idea of the mile or so of open moorland between Bavelaw Mill Farm and Wester Bavelaw after a night of heavy rain. The ground was saturated and the very rough and indistinct path was deep with running water. Fortunately it wasn’t raining now, so we paddled on despite the bitterly cold wind. Returning now to the start of our walk, which was the Threipmuir Car Park, we set off in the opposite direction to our normal route by heading back to the Marchbank Hotel and westwards along the North side of the Red Moss Nature Reserve towards East Rigg. As we approached East Rigg we heard the unmistakable calling of a skein of greylag geese flying overhead. As we 46 | BALERNO

watched they all appeared to drop from the sky as if at a given signal to join at least a thousand of their kin already settled on a field between us and the Bavelaw Nature Reserve at the western end of Threipmuir Reservoir. Never before had we seen so many together in all our years of tramping the hills. Something had attracted them, perhaps the fresh green shoots of a cereal crop but from where we were it appeared to be just a green field. On reaching the end of the metalled road we turned off on the track to West Rigg and Bavelaw Mill Farm where in a field to our right we spotted a flock of at least forty whooper swans with their distinctive yellow bill patches. Moments later we heard the sound of wing beats as another group of six flew in and landed about a hundred metres from the whoopers. We wondered

why, until we realised that the incoming flight were mute swans who didn’t fancy joining the others but still wanted to share in whatever was on offer. Somehow we missed the ‘path’ which would take us to Wester Bavelaw and we came to a gate by the Mill Farm which appeared promising and, as it was in roughly the right direction, we took it and found ourselves in a waterlogged field. On the far side we were faced with a burn in full spate, while being watched by a flock of interested black-faced sheep. With no way to cross we turned back and splashed our way back to the farm where we met the farmer, ‘You lost?’ he asked. To our nods he continued, ‘you’re not the first and you won’t be the last’. He kindly directed us back to a gate that we had missed and an almost invisible bridge over the burn. Following @KonectDirectory

his directions we set off on the most waterlogged mile we had ever crossed and that brings us back to where this tale began. It came as something of a relief to reach the incline leading up to Wester Bavelaw and even more so find ourselves on the metalled road beyond. Passing the signposted Red Road track to Nine Mile Burn we reached the avenue of beech trees leading down to Threipmuir

Reservoir and our last port of call, the Robin Aitken Bird Hide at the Bavelaw Marsh Nature Reserve. It had been an eventful walk; we had seen many things of interest, paddled a mile or so and couldn’t help wondering if a signpost just before the Mill Farm would save the farmer from being bothered by the like of us. On returning home with sodden boots and socks I was asked , ‘Why didn’t you turn back?’ My reply was simple, ‘We don’t do turning back’.

This walk was contributed by Peter Harnden. Peter is a member of Friends of the Pentlands who writes in prose and verse about the hills he knows and loves.

Coconut Seafood Curry

Full of flavour, this speedy curry is great for a summer supper. Replace the asparagus tips with green beans or sugar snap peas, if liked. Ingredients:

• 1 tbsp vegetable oil • 8 shallots, peeled and halved • 2-3 tbsp Thai green curry paste (see Tip) • 225g new potatoes, scrubbed and halved • 1 large carrot, peeled and thinly sliced • 400ml can reduced fat coconut milk • 150ml vegetable stock • 2tbsp light soy sauce • 450g cod fillet, skinned and cut into chunks • 175g fine asparagus tips • Juice from 1 lime • 200g cooked tiger prawns, thawed if frozen • 2tbsp freshly chopped coriander • Salt and freshly ground black pepper • Chopped red chilli and fresh coriander leaves, to garnish

50 | BALERNO

Method:

1. Heat the oil in a large deep frying pan over a medium heat and fry the shallots for 5 minutes until golden. Stir in the Thai green curry paste and cook for 1 minute. 2. Add the potatoes, carrot, coconut milk, stock and soy sauce. Simmer for 10-15 minutes until the vegetables are almost tender. 3. Add the chunks of cod and asparagus tips to the pan. Cover and simmer gently for a further 6-8 minutes until the fish is just cooked and beginning to flake. 4. Gently stir in the lime juice, tiger prawns and chopped coriander. Simmer for 5 minutes until the prawns are piping hot, then season to taste with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Serve in warmed bowls garnished with chopped chilli and coriander leaves. Serve with boiled noodles or steamed Thai jasmine rice.

Serves 4 Ready in 50 minutes Tip:

Brands of Thai green curry paste can vary in spiciness so check on the jar before adding. If you want a really fiery flavour, fry 1 chopped small red chilli pepper with the shallots. @KonectDirectory

WHAT’S ON

Outdoor Events in West Lothian The month of June is upon us, there is an abundance of outdoor activities and days out to enjoy, and a lot on offer to celebrate the history and heritage of West Lothian! The Bathgate Procession and John Newland Festival take place on the 2nd in remembrance of John Newland’s contribution to the building of Bathgate Academy. The day’s activities include a historical pageant commemorating the marriage of Princess Marjory to Walter, Lord High Steward of Scotland. This is a fantastic historic event! On the 19th the hugely popular Linlithgow Marches take place across Linlithgow High Street. This historic event has taken place for many hundreds of years and is celebrated with the whole community coming together to celebrate the town of Linlithgow with pride and passion. A procession of drummers and pipers lead the citizens from 11am from Linlithgow Bridge into Blackness and is concluded in the evening with a sing along of Auld Lang Syne on the steps of the Burgh Halls. Spectacular Jousting also begins on the 30th at Linlithgow Palace and runs into the first day of July. Hear the thunder of hooves and the crack of lances splintering as out brave knights stage an unforgettable display of horsemanship and skill. Running from 12:30pm to 4:30pm, this is a wonderful family friendly event in a beautiful setting. For more adventurous days out, Jupiter Artland which reopened last month will be open 7 days a week for the first time and is celebrating its 10 year anniversary by holding a number of events. Independent personal financial planning

Let’s talk saving for a great retirement Are you saving enough for your retirement? Interest rates are still low and there have been major changes to pension legislation, particularly schemes from former nationalised industries. If you’re worried about your future financial security, let’s talk. We’ll ask a lot of questions about your financial objectives and any concerns about the value of your pension or the provision of long term care. And we’ll listen. You won’t be pressurised or rushed into making any financial decisions. We’ve been delivering independent financial advice in Edinburgh and the Lothians for more than 30 years. You can easily call in to see us in South Edinburgh and we’ll take the time to get to know you properly.

Why not ask for a no-obligation, initial meeting at our expense. It’s free. No pressure.

0131 440 8250 www.torphin.co.uk Please remember that the value of investments can fall as well as rise and you may not get back your original investment.
