TO OUR JUNE EDITION

W

THIS ISSUE

ishing all readers and businesses a fantastic Procession and John Newland Festival!

June is also the month many of us are thinking about summer holidays, especially families with school children. So it may seem a little early for a “back to school” article, but the Charity of the Month feature in this issue is about school uniforms and is a bit special – turn to pages 8-9 to see why we’re running it this month. Many of us are not going away over the summer, but there is plenty on locally to have some fantastic days out. The Local People column this month features a lady who has quite an unusual job as an independent funeral celebrant. I heard her speaking at an event about her route into this role and was quite touched by it. She was happy to share her story, see page 27. Once again, thanks for reading Konect and supporting local businesses and organisations.

CHARITY OF THE MONTH

“The idea of a school uniform bank came about after a teacher in Glasgow noticed that some children were writing ‘school uniform’ on their Christmas wish lists,” explains Kirstin Shemilt, Chair of The School Bank West Lothian. Going to school in the “wrong” clothes, children are vulnerable to bullying, social exclusion and low self esteem; the knock-on effects on their education are significant. “The idea was to model it on food banks, where families are referred by professionals, donations collected from the community, and children provided with everything they need for school. I heard about this and said to my mum – I’m going to start a school bank, it can’t be that hard!” That was in August 2015. Days after launching the first referral came in. Since then, The School Bank West Lothian has helped over 600 children and the demand is ever-growing. Families experiencing financial hardship come from all walks of life. Referrals come from teachers, social workers, other charitable organisations, the Advice Shop in Bathgate, the Citizen’s Advice Bureau, and women’s shelters – sadly it is not unusual for a woman to have to flee domestic violence and leave her home with the children and nothing else. Imagine what it’s like for the children starting at a new school in a different area and not being able to have a decent set of appropriate uniform. Although the process sounds simple, a huge amount of organisation and co8 | BATHGATE

ordination is involved in getting the packs out to the children who need them. The local community has been very generous with donations, and having outgrown their living rooms in the early days, Kirstin and the wee team were fortunate to acquire the use of a premises at Kirkton Campus for storing, sorting and packing. Second hand donations are sorted, washed and folded so that every pack is beautifully presented. “Each child referred receives one complete set of brand new uniform, and usually a couple of sets of nearly-new uniform. We don’t want to hand out anything that is not in excellent condition. It’s about respecting the recipients.” The packs also contain a lot of other school essentials such as gym kits, stationery, a back pack, a warm coat and scarf for the winter, to name a few. They always include brand new footware. “You get quite involved with the child you’re packing for,” says Kirstin. “although we never actually meet them, as the packs are sent via the referrer. But in the referral you are told the age and gender of the child and it is fun to add in extra items such as hair accessories and sanitary towels. Teenagers are the hardest to pack for – it’s always difficult to know what they might want in as extras or what clothes they will like!”

SPONSOR A CHILD “Over the summer, we’re looking for supporters to sponsor a child. We give you the age and gender of the child in need, and you can donate a set of school uniform and equipment such as pencil case and stationery for her/him.” The community was incredibly generous with the Sponsor a Child appeal last summer, and The School Bank West Lothian are hoping for a good response this summer too. @KonectDirectory

Alternatively you can donate just an item or two – pick up a pack of polo shirts or a pair of trousers while you’re doing your shopping. Pencil cases, calculators, lunch bags and stationery are welcome too. All the shops will have their “Back to School” ranges in store this month before the holidays! The local drop-off points for donations are: • All West Lothian Libraries • Astro Gymnastics: 7 Brewster Square, Brucefield Industrial Estate, Livingston EH54 9BJ (next to the Larder). Open 9am-8pm Mon – Sat. • Homestart, Cameron House, 13a Fairbairn Road, Livingston EH54 6TS. Opening hours: 9.00am – 5.00pm Mon – Thurs and 4.30pm on a Friday. • Craigshill Good Neighbourhood Network, Almondbank Centre, Livingston, EH54 5EH

PACKING VOLUNTEERS! If you can spare and hour or two over the summer to help sort and pack clothes, it would make a huge difference to how many will be ready for the new school term. Bring a friend or two for a blether and help out with this essential work School Bank are doing.

HOME IMPROVEMENT

brilliant bathroom

Lighting

Use a range of light fittings for a flexible scheme, for brisk morning ablutions to leisurely evening baths.

In the morning, you’ll need bright, efficient light in the bathroom but for a soak in the tub you’ll want soft, relaxing lighting. A lighting scheme for a bathroom requires careful consideration and should be planned at the same time as the plumbing, considering the availability and direction of natural light, who uses the bathroom, what for and when, and the overall style you require. It should be flexible and combine directional task lights with adjustable general background light – and using fittings suitable for wet and steamy conditions.

BATHROOM LIGHTING REGULATIONS

Bathroom lighting regulations are strict. The lights you choose must have a suitable IP (ingress protection) rating, which relates to how close to water the fitting will be. Typically, the room is divided into three zones. Zone 0 is inside the bath or shower, so fittings must be immersion-proof, rated at least IP67 and low voltage. Zone 1 is the area above the bath or shower, to a height of 2.25m from the floor, and a minimum rating of IP45 is required (though most shower lights are rated at IP65). Zone 2 is outside the bath and shower, reaching 60cm on either side and 2.25m from the floor; any area within 60cm of a tap is also considered within zone 2. Here, a rating of at least IP44 is required. Outside these areas there are no specific IP requirements, though experts recommend fittings with a minimum rating of IP20. You should always consult a qualified electrician.

For washing, shaving and putting on make-up, it’s useful to install bright, ‘working’ lights above the bath, shower and basin areas, with additional lighting for any remaining dark areas. Use mirrors to reflect light around the room and make it seem brighter. All-purpose downlights set into the ceiling are neat, and small, directional lights on tracks are useful, too, and come in a range of inexpensive styles.

Mirrors and mirrored cabinets with integral lighting are a great two-in-one solution; alternatively light a conventional mirror with theatre-style bulbs all around or wall lamps on either side. When placing lights make sure the lights is even, and avoid a single, very bright light from above. Supplement ceiling lights with LED strips behind baffles or panels. Other ideas include: storage units incorporating lighting; uplighters in flooring; a remote control LED colour-changing lamp; basin taps with a water-activated LED light; illuminated rainfall shower heads; and low-level lighting that comes on automatically when someone enters the room – great for night-time toilet visits. For real luxury, install two bathroom lighting circuits – one for everyday lights, and the other for ambient dimmable lights. Finally, candlelight is ideally suited to relaxing in the bathroom. @KonectMagazines

MOTORING

Electric Vehicle Myths Busted Confusion surrounds the running and operation of electric vehicles (EV). Here, we try to clear that up. 1. You can’t boil the kettle while charging an electric car A National Grid report warned that home networks might struggle to cope with high-capacity car charging. However, EV owners with a low-capacity home network wouldn’t have a high-capacity charger, so there’s little chance of the network being overloaded. 2. EVs are more expensive than petrol and diesel cars The base price of an EV will be slightly more expensive, although manufacturers compensate by offering a generous specification so that with the government’s £4,500 zero-emission vehicle grant taken into account, they’re a pretty good deal, plus have low running costs. What’s more, as EV technology becomes more prevalent, costs will reduce – the new Nissan Leaf starts at £1,500 less than the old one. 3. They’re more likely to catch fire in a crash Concerns about crash safety are largely driven by a couple of high-profile Tesla Model S fires in 2013. The EV maker upgraded its underbody battery pack protection in 2014 but also noted that the odds of fires in its cars were “five times lower than those of an average gasoline car”. 4. You can’t drive them in car washes or when it’s raining Manufacturers carefully seal all of the electrified components to make sure there aren’t any problems using car washes, or driving or charging in the rain. 5. You can’t go very far Most electric vehicles now have a range in excess of 150 miles, with 200 miles becoming the norm.

14 | BATHGATE

6. There’s nowhere to charge them Long trips require a bit more planning, but charge point locator Zap Map indicates there are almost 15,000 connectors at more than 5,000 locations in the UK, with more added all the time. Plus, rapid chargers can provide 80 per cent of charge in about 30 minutes. 7. The batteries don’t last very long

Batteries do have a finite life but most manufacturers offer battery leasing for a monthly fee and will replace it for free when needed. Others offer replacement warranties, with five- to eight-year cover the norm.

8. EVs are less environmentally friendly across their life cycle The energy required to build an electric car can make it less environmentally friendly to produce than a traditionally fuelled car. However, a Norwegian study quoted by the BBC estimates an EV is about 10 per cent better over its life cycle, and that will continue to improve. 9. Battery disposal poses a huge environmental issue

It does, but the EV boom has encouraged lateral thinking to improve recycling rates, with companies taking used EV batteries for use elsewhere, such as home energy storage. 10. They’re boring to drive

Modern electric cars can be genuinely fun to drive, particularly thanks to the high-torque motors, which make acceleration brisk. Tesla takes this to extremes with its Model S, which reaches 60mph in less than three seconds – comparable to the new McLaren Senna supercar, with its petrolpowered twin-turbo V8. GARDENING PROJECT For speed you could just add a great dollop of Crème Fraiche and a good splash of Balsamic Vinegar. Oh the joys of summer!

New World Minted Strawberries A favourite recipe from our Potager to Plate leaflet No.1 is for New World Minted Strawberries. Our leaflets recommend what you should plant each month and then have recipes for the produce that your garden could be producing that month. Halve 500g of strawberries into a bowl and sprinkle over 1 tbsp castor sugar and a handful of finely chopped mint leaves. Leave for 30 minutes. 10 minutes before serving pour over Âź bottle of New World Red Wine (use the cheaper ones!). Enjoy!

PROPERTY MATTERS

Accompanied Viewings Highly Preferable It is incredible that so few agents regularly accompany buyers around a property, leaving it to the seller to do all the work! Not only is this poor service but accompanied viewings from a well-trained sales negotiator have a greater chance of success, for the following reasons. 1. The heart. The buyer’s initial objective is simply to get a feel for the property, asking themselves “could we be happy here?” In order to buy the property, they need to fall in love with it. During a first viewing, the last thing the heart needs is the seller highlighting small details that are not relevant and can be very distracting. The buyers might also be also keen to discuss their heartfelt plans for the property, which is embarrassing and difficult within earshot of the seller. Also the last thing the heart wants is a pushy seller trying to force a sale, just because the seller is so keen to sell. 2. The brain. The brain really kicks in on the second viewing. The heart has already booked a removal company following the first viewing, but the brain says “hey, not so fast - we need to see the property again - just to be sure!” So on the second viewing, the buyer is looking for reasons NOT to buy the property. Those small details that were irrelevant on the first viewing now become useful - unless they were unnecessarily “spent” on the first viewing. Also, the agent who accompanies the first viewing will have listened out for buying 22 | BATHGATE

signals and objections that the seller might have missed, and which can be harnessed during the second viewing.

3. Understanding/empathy. A good negotiator will build a relationship with the buyer, understanding their needs, preferences, hopes, aspirations and potential areas of compromise. Armed with this knowledge the agent will not just “show” the property, but “explore” it enthusiastically, whilst demonstrating how it could fit with the buyer’s lifestyle in the context of other properties the agent is also showing them. The seller on the other hand, has little or no understanding of the buyer and generally, will only show buyers to each room.

There are also occasions when it is important for buyers to meet the property owner and an experienced agent will recognise this and coordinate it with both parties or even facilitate a meeting but anyone thinking about selling their property should consider the benefits of professionally accompanied viewings as part of their sales campaign. The monthly Property Matters column is contributed by Craig Turpie. Craig is a director at Turpie & Co Estate Agents and Letting Agents with extensive knowledge of the West Lothian Property Market and over 20 years experience in bespoke sales and marketing.

HEALTH & BEAUTY

EAT YOUR WAY TO THICKER, LONGER & SHINIER HAIR I am a great believer that the best way to great hair is nutrition. You can literally eat your way to better hair. Here are a few of my favourites: SALMON is full of vitamin D, protein and fatty acids that nourish your scalp, encourage hair growth and improve shine. YELLOW PEPPERS have 5 and a half times more vitamin c than oranges, this will help strengthen the hair shaft, follicles and prevent breakage. OYSTERS are an incredible source of zinc, alternatively you can also take zinc supplements. Deficiency of zinc is known to cause hair loss and poor scalp conditions so make sure you get a good dose in your diet. Other great foods are eggs, for protein, omega 3 and biotin to encourage stronger, faster growing hair. Sunflower seeds for vitamin E, encouraging blood flow to the scalp and promote faster hair growth. The best thing is all of these things are good for your body and your skin too! Remember to drink plenty of water too and you’re on your way!

When we come across people - socially or at work - who seem egocentric, judgmental or unfeeling, it can be tempting to be equally harsh in our judgment of them.

We might pause to consider that these people are formed by their years of life thus far - just as we are. Perhaps they’ve never grown beyond the shallow world view which believes it’s satisfying to be ‘better’ than others. They probably completely believe in the ‘rightness’ of their own opinion. This is the domain of the ego and its striking features are lack of humility and an absence of gentleness to be able to truly feel for others. In times when life feels difficult, one positive outcome might be that we can be shaped by our vulnerability in a way which increases our compassion for others. And of course, whilst we would never wish our times of suffering to last any longer than it seems they must, they can surely lead to a stretched heart with more awareness of how very much we have to be thankful for. And these people who are painful to be around? Well, perhaps we can be true to ourselves and simply notice the sadness we feel around them. We might even try to be kind. And if that makes no difference? Well, where possible, we can just walk right around them and leave them to the battleground of their own egos.

This column is contributed by Rosanna Veitch. “I have worked as a counsellor for 30 years, I see clients of all ages and with all forms of emotional distress in my peaceful therapy room at my home. Please feel free to call for a chat. Everyone is welcome, and I’m happy to adjust my fee if money is tight.” T: 0131 449 2580 W: www.effectivecounsellingedinburgh.com @KonectDirectory

HEALTH

Ways To Wellbeing Research tells us that just as eating 5 portions of fruit and vegetables each day can help keep us physically healthy, there are 5 things we can do to really help boost our mental wellbeing: 1. Connect - connect with people around youyour family, friends and neighbours 2. Be active - this doesn’t have to mean going to the gym! Take a short walk or do a bit of gardening. 3. Be mindful - try to be more aware of how you are feeling and what you are thinking in the moment 4. Keep learning - learning new skills gives a real sense of achievement. Why not sign up for a course or take up a new hobby? 5. Give to others - a smile or saying a kind word can really make a difference. So too can volunteering within your community This is not always easy and sometimes we need extra support when feeling low or anxious. If you live in West Lothian and would like support with your mental health and wellbeing, Health in Mind can help- or put you in touch with others who can. LOCAL PEOPLE

Linda Williamson

“I will be honoured to walk with you” “Last year, I lost a very close friend. I helped nurse her at the end and was asked to speak at her funeral. Saying goodbye to a loved one is one of the hardest things to do, but I held it together and got through. Something clicked; I can do this.”

Linda is an independent funeral celebrant who is telling me how she found her way into this special role. After the funeral, many of the family and friends told her they had appreciated her speech more than the official celebrant’s. “The experience set me on a journey and I realised I’ve been doing this kind of thing quite naturally for a long time. It is an honour to be able to help people and their loved ones at their most vulnerable point; to help people make that final journey.”

Linda is a long-term member of the Caravan Club (“caravan rallies in different parts of Scotland at weekends, it was a fantastic upbringing for the kids”) and she had been doing informal sermons on Sundays at the rallies for many years. “It was just something I loved doing, and other members appreciated it. One year there was a tragic incident where one of the families in the Club had lost a son. I said something about it in my service on the Sunday.” She hadn’t known the lad personally, but afterwards his family said they had been “blown away, very touched” by what she had said. Deciding to follow her calling, Linda embarked on formal training and is now a qualified independent funeral celebrant. Does she end up thinking about death a lot? “Not really. But you do develop a dark sense of humour.” She has been an NHS nurse for a long time, and currently trains student nurses and midwives how to handle patients without hurting themselves or the patient. “As a nurse you witness death as part of your job and you develop a coping mechanism. It’s not that you @KonectMagazines

Linda sings in the Bathg ate

Menzies choir

don’t feel things, but you use dark humour as a protective barrier. If you didn’t, you’d be overwhelmed.” Active listening and empathy come naturally to Linda. She explains it’s about really listening to what people are saying, putting them at ease, and talking to them, not at them. Her mother was episcopalian and her father was a spiritual healer, so she comes from a broad church! She is genuinely happy to conduct any kind of service, her focus is on respecting the wishes of the deceased and their family, on taking great care to get to know about the person and their life so that she can deliver a very personal tribute. “It’s a real honour, I love to do it.” Will she write her own eulogy? “I might do. I might modify the one I did for myself as part of my qualification. It is mostly about my dogs.” Linda’s cocker spaniels are very important to her. She also sings in the Bathgate Menzies choir. As an independent funeral celebrant Linda can conduct part-religious, non-religious or secular funerals and pagan rituals. She also does pet funerals. “Celebration of the life you have loved or a simple way to say farewell, I will be honoured to work with you at this often difficult time” Contact Linda on 07747 533213 www.butterfliescivilfuneralcelebra.com Helen-Jane Shearer interviewed Linda Williamson for this article. Coconut Seafood Curry

Full of flavour, this speedy curry is great for a summer supper. Replace the asparagus tips with green beans or sugar snap peas, if liked. Ingredients:

• 1 tbsp vegetable oil • 8 shallots, peeled and halved • 2-3 tbsp Thai green curry paste (see Tip) • 225g new potatoes, scrubbed and halved • 1 large carrot, peeled and thinly sliced • 400ml can reduced fat coconut milk • 150ml vegetable stock • 2tbsp light soy sauce • 450g cod fillet, skinned and cut into chunks • 175g fine asparagus tips • Juice from 1 lime • 200g cooked tiger prawns, thawed if frozen • 2tbsp freshly chopped coriander • Salt and freshly ground black pepper • Chopped red chilli and fresh coriander leaves, to garnish

30 | BATHGATE

Method:

1. Heat the oil in a large deep frying pan over a medium heat and fry the shallots for 5 minutes until golden. Stir in the Thai green curry paste and cook for 1 minute. 2. Add the potatoes, carrot, coconut milk, stock and soy sauce. Simmer for 10-15 minutes until the vegetables are almost tender. 3. Add the chunks of cod and asparagus tips to the pan. Cover and simmer gently for a further 6-8 minutes until the fish is just cooked and beginning to flake. 4. Gently stir in the lime juice, tiger prawns and chopped coriander. Simmer for 5 minutes until the prawns are piping hot, then season to taste with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Serve in warmed bowls garnished with chopped chilli and coriander leaves. Serve with boiled noodles or steamed Thai jasmine rice.

Serves 4 Ready in 50 minutes Tip:

Brands of Thai green curry paste can vary in spiciness so check on the jar before adding. If you want a really fiery flavour, fry 1 chopped small red chilli pepper with the shallots. @KonectDirectory

MUSIC REVIEW

I know your name is Rita I like Rita Ora. I mean, I don’t dislike Rita Ora. I can take or leave her, you know. Actually, yeah, put something else on. New single “Girls” is celebration of bi-sexuality, with a undertone of deliberate baiting. Fortunately, we are finally approaching a society in which knowledge of the exact percentage that anyone prefer girls to boys or not at all is of less interest than wondering what the band Bare Naked Ladies will do when they hear how much the verses resemble the fast sung sections of their mega hit “One Week”, assuming Gary and Robbie don’t get their first because the opening bars are pretty much “Candy”. A good pop single anyway, even if it sinks two thirds of the way through under the weight of no less than three unnecessary guest rappers. Are there any other kind? Discuss. Free from collaborators talking over her record, Eleanor Friedberger continues moving towards the mainstream after putting sibling band The Fiery

32 | BATHGATE

Furnaces on hiatus six years ago. New single - or lead track (or not even that, three songs are being promoted simultaneously) “In-between Stars” is a friendly piece of unassuming synth pop. Not unlike the later La Roux sound, there is no intention to shock or even innovate, just to curl the melody around your ears. New album “Rebound” is all songs of similar quality, and the sleeve is great too. Do you want to debate the Childish Gambino aka Donald Glover single “This Is America?”. As a provocative art performance by actor and comedian the video is both stunning and disturbing. As a stand alone recording if anyone wants to listen to it more than once then it must be the end of days. Put something else on. Rita Ora. I like her. The monthly music review is contributed by James Kerr. James presents the Regal Music Club show on Regal Radio (www.regal-radio.net) and is a member of the local band ‘Snakeskin Shoe Review’.

VISIT WEST LOTHIAN

Outdoor Events in West Lothian The month of June is upon us, there is an abundance of outdoor activities and days out to enjoy, and a lot on offer to celebrate the history and heritage of West Lothian! The Bathgate Procession and John Newland Festival take place on the 2nd in remembrance of John Newland’s contribution to the building of Bathgate Academy. The day’s activities include a historical pageant commemorating the marriage of Princess Marjory to Walter, Lord High Steward of Scotland. This is a fantastic historic event! On the 19th the hugely popular Linlithgow Marches take place across Linlithgow High Street. This historic event has taken place for many hundreds of years and is celebrated with the whole community coming together to celebrate the town of Linlithgow with pride and passion. A procession of drummers and pipers lead the citizens from 11am from Linlithgow Bridge into Blackness and is concluded in the evening with a sing along of Auld Lang Syne on the steps of the Burgh Halls. Spectacular Jousting also begins on the 30th at Linlithgow Palace and runs into the first day of July. Hear the thunder of hooves and the crack of lances splintering as out brave knights stage an unforgettable display of horsemanship and skill. Running from 12:30pm to 4:30pm, this is a wonderful family friendly event in a beautiful setting. For more adventurous days out, Jupiter Artland which reopened last month will be open 7 days a week for the first time and is celebrating its 10 year anniversary by holding a number of events. Five Sisters Zoo also welcomed two new rescue bears last month so why not head along there to catch a glimpse of these beautiful new arrivals? Whatever you decide to get up to in June, we hope you decide to spend it in West Lothian! For more information, or the latest on all the great things to see and do in West Lothian please visit:
