Thanks for reading konect and for supporting local businesses. We strongly believe in keeping local money local, so if you need work done on the house, garden or car have a look through the pages of this magazine to find local trades people and give them the first chance for your work. We're heading into the last couple of weeks of the school holidays, if you're home from travels and looking for things for the children to do check the What's On pages as there are still holiday clubs running, or make the most of the weather (outlook is good at least at the time of going to print!) and try the local walk this month on page 16 which is a great one for all ages.
Message from the Editor
Our local history feature this month looks at “The Killing Time - a somewhat gloomy subject but important events during this period took place locally here and in the Pentland Hills and it's interesting to ponder, whilst enjoying our beautiful and peaceful hills today, that they have in the past been the scene of momentous conflict. Remember if you're involved in a community group or not-for-profit club locally, details can be listed free of charge in the back of konect. See page 61 for details.

Local History
"The Killing Time" by Vicky Whyte
November 1684: The Kirk of Calder in Mid Calder is the scene of a military enquiry into the circumstances of the death of two of His Majesty's Life Guards, who were murdered at a place called Swyne Abbey near Livingston on the 20th November 1684. Every parishioner in Mid Calder was bought into the Kirk for interrogation regarding the circumstances of the deaths of the two Guards, whose names were Thomas Kennoway and Duncan Stewart … but the villagers revealed nothing and the perpetrators of the crime were never found. The enquiry was called by His Majesty’s (James II's) commanding officer, was held under the Lords Livingston, Ross & Torphichen. What was the background to this extraordinary event? Kennoway had become notorious in the village of Mid Calder for seizing an old man who, he alleged, was a rebellious Covenanter and had him “beaten and bound in a most barbarous manner,” as it was said in the annals of the times. Kirk of Calder in the 17th Century
The Covenanters - such as the old man allegedly attacked in Mid Calder - were Presbyterians who were seeking to protect their faith in the face of the Episcopal Church of England that the Stuart kings were trying to impose on Scotland. They had drawn up the “National Covenant of Scotland,” (signed in Greyfriars Kirk in 1638) hence the label “Covenanters.” The Episcopal Church of England had the king at its head and then a hierarchy of archbishops, bishops and so on. They ruled under what they called the “Divine Right of Kings.” The Scottish Presbyterians, however, did not think that a king should be at the head of a church, and stood against them. This stand against the imposed English church resulted in tremendous cruelty, torture, imprisonment and deportation over the period while the Stuarts were in power, a timeline of approximately 50 years. The era is known as the “The Killing Time” in Scotland and lasted from 1625 until 1688 through the reigns of Charles 1, Charles II and James II with an intervening period of respite of 21 years when Cromwell was Lord Protector of England. The National of Covenant of Scotland, besides protecting their faith, actually swore fealty of the Covenanters to their king. But this didn’t make any difference and they suffered greatly under the Stuart kings for the right to worship with God as the head of their church. Returning to the Mid Calder incident - a few people went into Edinburgh to complain to General Dalzell of The Binns (near Philpstoun) about the cruelty shown to the old man. In reply Dalzell, who was one of the king’s men, made the old man sign a paper on pain of death that Thomas Kennoway had never wronged or harmed him in any way. This infamous General Tam Dalzell, who became know as “Bluidy Tam” had been the leader of the kings troops at the famous Battle of Rullion Green 18 years earlier, so this reaction is unsurprising. The Covenanters held their secret prayer meetings throughout the “Killing Time” at remote sites known as Conventicles. The Cauldstane Slap in the Pentlands just off the Lang Whang was one such site, and records from 1684 tell of gatherings of
8 konect
between two and three hundred people near the Slap, some armed with swords and pistols. There were many sites in the Border country too. There is still a conventicle held once a year near Durisdeer (Dumfries and Galloway) on the Duke of Buccleuch’s estate. It is an open air prayer meeting held up in the hills on the site of a ruined kirk and an old graveyard where many of the Covenanters were buried. The people gather annually to remember the sacrifice that they made. It wasn’t until 1688 that the Scots were allowed to worship in their own way. Under all of this tremendous pressure brought about the by Crown, the Covenanters refused to give up their rights and they should still be respected for their bravery and sacrifice for what they believed in.
Battle of Rullion Green, Pentland Hills The site of Rullion Green is in the Pentlands near Glencourse. The Battle here in 1666 was a showdown in the attempt by the Covenanters to earn their religious freedom. A troop of around 3000 Convenanters - a mixture of professional soldiers and ordinary citizens - assembled from Dumfries and Galloway, Ayrshire and Lanarkshire heading for Edinburgh to present a petition to Parliament. Many of their number deserted however, disheartened, leaving only around 900 by the time they got as far as Colinton. Their leader decided to call a parade and review at Rullion Green in the Pentlands. General Tam Dalzell, commander of the Kings troops, was in Currie at the time with a force of around 3000, and decided to cut straight through the hills and confront the Covenanters. The Covenanters were vastly outnumbered and roundly defeated, the survivors allegedly treated very cruelly. There is a monument commemorating Rullion Green near the Dreghorn Barracks at Colinton.
The Cauldstane Slap, Pentlands, the gap between East Cairn and West Cairn. A remote site ideal for the outlawed “Conventicles”

Ableworld
New Mobility Store, Broxburn Ableworld, the UK’s leading mobility company, is delighted to announce the opening of its latest franchise store in Broxburn. Ableworld Broxburn is owned by local residents David Gaffney and wife Audrey as well as sister Maureen McIvor and is located at 2 Dunnet Way, East Mains Industrial Estate, Broxburn, West Lothian, EH52 5NN (previously Mark Wallace Motors). Ableworld is easy and convenient to reach with ample free parking. From spacious premises, Ableworld offers customers a wide selection of quality mobility and homecare products. A local store staffed by local people is often the place to go for the best service and that is certainly the case here, but Ableworld is also the place to find the keenest prices and enjoyable shopping experience. The store stocks a very wide range of products including larger items such as mobility scooters, wheelchairs, adjustable beds and rise and recline chairs but also many smaller items to help with day to day tasks. They also hold a wide range of products to help with bathing, toileting and dressing as well as a range of continence care products. Ableworld also installs stairlifts and service scooters. Whatever the product, the aim is to help people to lead easier, more comfortable and independent lives. The Directors of Ableworld Broxburn are all local people who have significant experience behind them. David has a wealth of Retail/Customer Service and Management experience which resulted in him owning and managing three car sales showrooms. Audrey is a primary school teacher and has been working in West Lothian schools for the past 36 years. Maureen has experience in many fields. She has worked as a nursing auxiliary for severely handicapped children, she has also worked in retail and has recently been employed by Edinburgh City Council working closely with OT’s and carers. All three directors have undertaken Ableworld’s extensive and rigorous training programme so that they can assess customers correctly and provide the

right solutions for the variety of customer’s needs they will face. David has a clear view how he and his fellow directors can help local people who need mobility equipment. “I am looking forward to a new challenge and fulfilling customers’ expectations. When we were researching other mobility retailers, we were disappointed by the number of times we would walk into a store and be completely ignored. We also noticed how the stores were small, dark and not welcoming. Our new store is completely the opposite of all those things and I believe that it is every customer’s right to be treated fairly and honestly which is exactly what we intend to do at Ableworld Broxburn.” Whatever your needs, you can be assured of a range of quality products from names you can trust. Why not call in? Open 9am to 5.30pm Monday to Saturday you can visit your new Ableworld store at - 2 Dunnet Way, East Mains Industrial Estate, Broxburn, West Lothian, EH52 5NN. Tel: 01506 856565.

Local Walk
A walk to brunch
Karen Murray finds that a promise of food makes for a more harmonious walk A walk in the area of the Harlaw Reservoir is always a popular one in our household at any time of year as it can be fairly short – the kids not partial to a long walk if they can possibly get away with it – but more than that, there is much of interest to be found along the way so a simple walk ends up taking much more time as dens are made in trees and undergrowth, stiles are climbed, water is paddled in, frogs are found etc. I have described the basic walk around the Harlaw Reservoir before and other walks that begin here, as the Visitor Centre is the hub for a myriad tracks heading off over the Pentlands. The difference this time is that when we headed to the Visitor Centre to begin our walk, we discovered something new – Vanilla Pod. This is a pop-up kiosk that sells fabulous crepes as well as other yummy delights. Now if you can use the ‘carrot’ to encourage walking with my lot, then you will get a whole lot further. Promise of a chocolate crepe and cold drink for Sunday brunch was sure to get them going. As hubby and I were equally keen on a double espresso and accompanying breakfast crepe, we kept the walk to the basic loop around the reservoir – including of course some stone skimming at the water’s edge.
Harlaw. Photo by Patrick Down
16 konect
However as I said there are several variations on the walk and additions of the basic route that means you can head up to Harlaw for a quick stroll, or a whole day hike. A particularly good option, once parked in the main car park, is to head to the visitor centre and begin by turning right immediately crossing the dam with Harlaw Reservoir on your left. Once over the dam turn left to follow the broad, well-made path parallel to the water. The path here is pretty straight, divided from the reservoir by woodland on the left and you can follow rough paths through the woodland rather than the main path – guess which route my kids opt for? At the far end of the reservoir cross the footbridge over the feed channel. The earth dam of Threipmuir Reservoir is dead ahead and you can opt to turn right and follow the path alongside this reservoir up to another car park and into the Red Moss nature reserve, then retrace your steps and continue around Harlaw reservoir back to the start. Alternatively you can head left and walk along the earth dam before going right at the side of the Threipmuir reservoir, crossing a short stretch of boggy ground and hitting the woods once more, keeping the water close by on your right.
The woods are eventually left behind and the path improves as it continues by the water. There is a causeway across the reservoir, then you follow the path as it curves left to head through a gate then uphill into the trees. At another gate, pass through it then dogleg right to the next gate. After a final gate, you will see signpost in the wall enclosing Harlaw Reservoir. Cross the stile then follow the path to the right back to the visitor centre. Now you can enjoy a well-earned treat from Vanilla Pod. Family run, this upmarket kiosk has been a long time in the planning but eventually all the hurdles were jumped and the kiosk could open. Situated outside the Visitor Centre it is in a perfect location and once you have had one of their sweet or savoury crepes, you are sure to be back for more. The coffee is excellent and there are different lunch options each day from delicious soups,
to curry or sandwiches, cakes and pastries. The owners are very keen on making the enterprise as sustainable as possible down to the recyclable coffee cups, spoons and napkins. The ethos of the Vanilla Pod is to harmonise food with the environment, say the owners. Where possible food will be seasonal and locally sourced, nutritional and tasty. According to my hungry lot, it was just that.
Walk: starts at the car park for Harlaw Reservoir, signposted from Balerno Food: Vanilla Pod is open Friday to Sunday 10am-5pm

Cleanleeness “Some people think that cleaning is easy. But if you're doing it properly, it's not easy - it's hard work!” Lee Raby runs Cleanleeness, the domestic cleaning company he set up around two years ago. It all started when his gran became sick and he started doing her cleaning for her because she could no longer manage. He got on well and soon started cleaning for other people in his and his family's network. In a very short time, he was enlisting the help of family members and close friends … and employing them in his new cleaning business! He pulled out of the photography course that he had started in order run his business full time, and has never looked back. “I think customers appreciate the fact that we're a family business, and they get the same cleaner each time so they can build up a relationship with them. The cleaner gets to know their particular wants and needs,” he explains. “We're not a faceless agency which sends out a random cleaner each time. Customers have the telephone number of their cleaner, so can contact them directly to make changes or requests.” All the Cleanleeness cleaners so far are from within Lee's circle of close friends and family – in other words, people he knows really well and knows they will do the work to the right standard and put in the extra effort for the sake of the family business. And as his business is growing rapidly from
26 konect
recommendations and referrals, they must be doing something right. Is he soon going to run out of family and friends to employ? “Yes, I think so!” he laughs. “And when that time comes I'll have to think very carefully about who else I take on.” When you contact Cleanleeness, Lee arranges an initial visit to see what you want done – and to show you the company's appropriate insurance and police check documentation (all staff are police-checked). They have a “set menu” of jobs they will do on a weekly or fortnightly basis, or you can give them a check-list of things you want done. Lee likes to talk through what you need and take note of any special requests. For example, he explains to me that one customer likes them to use a different brand of cleaning product as he is sensitive to the smell of the one they usually use; another customer has a special schedule arranged as he is “de-junking” his house room by room and getting a deep clean in each one. It's a big part of the job satisfaction for Lee to be able to deliver exactly the service required. The bulk of their work though is the regular weekly or fortnightly visits, including dusting all surfaces, cleaning the windows on rotation, vacuuming and mopping, cleaning the bathrooms, kitchen surfaces and cupboard fronts. “We work fast, efficiently … and thoroughly. We don't cut corners. We've had a situation where a customer questioned that we needed 2 hours to do a job that the previous cleaner had done in 1.5 hours – but it became clear very quickly that the previous cleaner had not actually been doing everything properly.”
Cleanleeness is your local domestic cleaning service.

info@cleanleeness.com Since starting out Lee has got through various different brands of cleaning products, mops, vacuum cleaners, all to optimise the quality and efficiency of the work they do. (They have settled on Dyson cleaners as being the most effective for carpets). It's not just about turning up and rushing through the job, it's about getting it right in every detail. And the day doesn't end for Lee after the last cleaning job; all the cloths and dusters have to be washed and dried, vacuum cleaners emptied and checked over, paperwork and banking to do.
"It's not just about turning up and rushing through the job, it's about getting it right in every detail." “But I wouldn't have it any other way now,” he says. “I like things to be clean and I get a lot of satisfaction from a job well done.” Call Lee on 0131 564 0515, he will be delighted to help you out.
Testimonials from happy customers "My standard of cleanliness in the apartment is so much better now with Lee and his team doing the work and his attention to detail and his commitment to his role." "Lee was extremely professional and reliable. The business could accommodate various requests regarding both timings and cleaning tasks. There was a good work ethic and would happily recommend them to anyone in the future."

Ratho Community Centre Cafe A hidden gem
I love cafes in all their variety, and believe there is a cafe for every occasion. I like to check out the best places locally to get a good Italian coffee. So I was delighted when I finally got round to tasting the wares at the Ratho Community Centre cafe, to find that it is an absolute hidden gem. If you've not already been there for a coffee and cake, or a lunchtime soup, make it your next meet up point.
interest and hobbies. People love their special cakes and each one is a labour of love on Andrew's part. “I find it very relaxing to spend time on the tiny details of the cake decorations,” he says. You can see pictures of cakes he has made to date on his website at www.acakeforalloccasions.co.uk
The cafe is run by Andrew, who has a Dutch accent with a Scottish lilt. Andrew grew up in central Amsterdam near the famous Vondelpark, with bikes and canals. Dutch education at the time meant that you had to choose a specialist subject at age 14, and Andrew chose to go to cookery school. Leaving school at age 17, he had some months to kill before national service so he worked in a bakery for six months. He was hooked! During national service he trained as a UN peacekeeper and although never deployed, the skills he learned there got him into security work. After 15 years of security at five star Amsterdam hotels, he met his Scottish wife who was working in Holland at the time, and in 2004 he decided to move to Scotland. For work in his new country, Andrew turned to his love of cooking and baking. Despite his cookery training he had never worked in a professional kitchen, but while working for a call centre he applied for and got a restaurant job in Edinburgh. From there he went on to the RBS executive kitchen, catering for the senior staff and corporate hospitality functions. By the time he was made redundant from RBS in 2012 he was a parent and involved in the Ratho school and community. As a family-oriented person he wanted something that would fit around his family life in Ratho. Setting up the cafe was the perfect solution, and nearly 18 months on it's going from strength to strength. He loves being a pastry chef, and besides running the cafe he has developed a side-line in celebration cakes. Having done a few birthday cakes for customers, it really took off when he posted on facebook a picture of a Disney “Frozen” themed cake for a little girl's birthday. He now has a full order book for cakes themed on various cartoons and movies, special

The cafe opens after the summer break on Monday 18th August, 9am
Children are welcome at the cafe, there is a very relaxed atmosphere and it's the perfect place to catch up for a coffee and chat with friends during the day. What the premises itself may lack in decor or quaint china is more than made up for in the quality of the food and the friendliness of the welcome. Ratho Community Centre Cafe opens for breakfast, coffees and lunch. It serves morning rolls, soup, toasted paninis, ciabattas, and of course Andrew's freshlymade home baking. Knight Shades Blinds From butcher to blinds
Martin Sweeny has lived in Livingston all his life and been involved in a variety of ventures including Desperate Dan's Burger Van, a butcher's shop, managing a local rock group.... and running a made to measure blinds shop, Knight Shades. It's not an obvious career progression from butcher to blinds, so what's Martin's story and how has it made Knight Shades Blinds into the business it it today? “I never actually wanted to be a butcher,” he explains. “It was the one career I really didn't want to have, but I went to the shops one Saturday with my mum when I was twelve and the local butcher was advertising for a Saturday boy. I took the job on the spot, was given an oversize white apron and mum left me there to start work!” He had that Saturday job until he left school by which time he'd gained a wealth of experience and knowledge, then just stayed in the butcher trade, eventually setting up his own business. Martin made a name for himself during the meat on the bone ban between 1997 and 1999, attracting media attention for continuing to sell beef on the bone regardless (the ban was lifted when it become
clear that potential health issues were negligible). Ironically perhaps, Martin was so thoroughly up to date with perfectly documented health and safety conformance in his butcher's shop that an inspector commented that he was too well qualified to be a butcher and should work as an Environmental Health officer! But he loved the front line of customer service too much - the banter and the social interaction with customers in the shop....which is how he ended up selling blinds. “My apprentice in the shop had decided to leave and set up a blinds business, and invited me to sell for him. The timing was right so I decided to give the blinds a shot.” After three years there he ended up taking over the blinds business, naming it Knight Shades. That was 14 years ago, and Knight Shades is still going strong. “One of the first things I did was to make the pricing clear. It's important for customers to know that an offer is honest – we don't make it up on the spot based on how big the house is or how expensive the fabric. The options are clearly labelled and priced so when we arrive at a customer's house pricing is

always consistent.” There are permanent offers such as “3 blinds for £99,” depending on the type of blind and range of fabric you choose from. “We're not pushy, and customers appreciate that. When you call us to make an appointment, we come to your house, show you the samples and leave you to choose while we measure your windows. There is no pressure.” Knight Shades have a huge catalogue of colours and styles available , and have recently added matching cushions and curtains. Whites and creams are also permanently on special offer, making Knight Shades the obvious choice for plain neutral blinds. In addition, all end-of-line fabrics are on special offer – any leftovers from large jobs are discounted so if you only need one or two blinds you can get good fabrics at a great rate. With experience fitting commercial premises and new home builders as well as domestic customers, Martin is confident that Knight Shades has something for every window. The business moved from Deans to its current premises in Young Street, West Calder, about 4 years ago. The Young Street premises was a vast empty space that had previously been used as a truck washing area, so Martin has done a lot of work to subdivide it and make it suitable for his business.
Logo blinds Knight Shades supply logo-printed blinds for businesses. There is plenty of space here so besides the blinds manufacturing area, Martin has room to indulge in his main hobby – photography. “The photography is actually a separate business now, though it started out as a hobby.” He has created a studio for portraits, and he also does a lot of wedding and event photography. The studio is available to hire at the weekends for photography students, or anyone else who needs to hire it for a photography project. Martin is keen to encourage young photographers to make use of the space so they have access to studio equipment that would otherwise be too expensive for them. And – when blinds and photography are simply not enough – Martin has used some spare space to create an impressive bar and music area, complete with bubbling fish tanks. Martin says “Some have a den or a shed, but I have a bar at work!”

Technology
The Smart Time to Buy a Smartphone Smartphones have changed the way we work and play, and even the cheapest ones are incredibly powerful, delivering lots of bang for your buck - but is this the right time to buy one? The short answer is: that depends on what you want.
before upgraders flood the trade-in sites with their existing phones. It’s worth shopping around, though: for example, at the time of writing Carphone Warehouse is offering an extra £100 on top of any phone’s trade-in value on certain new phones.
If you’ve got to have the latest and greatest, keep an eye on the calendar. Apple tends to bring out new iPhones every September, so there’s no point in buying the iPhone 5S when the iPhone 6 is imminent. A Samsung Galaxy S5 is a safer bet, though, because Samsung's flagship phones usually come out in the spring. It’s worth checking out sites such as techradar.com to see what’s incoming: there’s nothing more annoying than buying something cutting edge, only to see it superseded a few weeks later.
If you want the best value for money it’s a very good idea to eschew Apple and high-end Android devices and look at alternatives. There are stacks of very good Android and Windows Phone smartphones, and in many cases you can pick them up for a fraction of what you’d pay for an iPhone or Samsung device: for example, while a Samsung Galaxy S5 starts at around £99 up front and £33 per month for a basic contract, the rather nifty HTC One is free on a £25 per month contract. If you’re going to have your new phone for two years, that’s a big saving.
Not everyone wants the latest technology, of course. Many of us just want a good phone for a good price. For that, the trick is to buy the previous version, so for example when the iPhone 6 comes out the price of iPhone 5Ses and associated contracts - will drop. For example HTC’s current flagship, the HTC One M8, is a great phone but it’s significantly more expensive than HTC’s earlier flagship, the HTC One. There’s another reason to pay attention to the calendar - if you’re planning to trade in your old phone. If you’re trading in an iPhone 5 you’ll get more for it before the iPhone 6 comes out than afterwards, and it’s a similar story for other high-end smartphones: you’ll get a better price Below - HTC One Right - Samsung Galaxy S5
46 konect
It’s a similar story with Windows Phone smartphones. Nokia’s Lumia 1020, a 4G phone with a fantastic camera, is free on contracts costing £25 and up; if all you want is a basic smartphone the simpler Lumia 520 is just £7.25 per month with no up front cost. There’s another factor you should consider, and that’s whether your current contract entitles you to an upgrade. Many pay monthly contracts do, usually after 18 months to 2 years, and such upgrades can cut the cost of getting a new phone (although it does mean signing up for another long contract with the same provider). Don’t assume that’s the best deal, though. As with most purchases, it pays to shop around. Left - iPhone 5s Below - Nokia Lumia 1020

Recipe and Food Notes
Becoming a Good Food Nation by Anne Pinkerton
In June this year the Scottish Government published a consultation document “Becoming a Good Food Nation. Recipe for Success: Scotland’s Food and drink Policy”* You might think this has little to do with ordinary folk, but in fact it's a very important document for everyone in Scotland today and for the population of the future. The plan is to change the whole way we all think about and react to our food. The Government want us to be fit, well and eating in a better way in 12 years’ time. Radical stuff and an amazing ambition for us all. The hope is that “the most intractable dietaryrelated diseases will have begun to decline by 2025, and people from every walk of life will take pride and pleasure in the food served day by day in Scotland. An increase in Scottish food exports will attract overseas visitors and the quality of the food we serve will become one of the key reasons to travel to Scotland. Everyone will know what constitutes good food and why. All players in Scottish life – from schools to hospitals, retailers, restaurants and food manufacturers – will be committed to serving such food” Some points from the document are : •

oor diet contributes significantly to the P main causes of death and poor health in Scotland, including heart disease, diabetes and obesity. Children’s diets are particularly poor. The proportion of adults in Scotland that are overweight or obese is 64% and rising. Scotland has the fifth highest prevalence of obesity compared to other countries worldwide Fruit and vegetables consumption in the poorest 20% has fallen by 20% since the recession. Diet-related disease contributes substantially to healthcare costs in Scotland.
Nevertheless, many people of all ages in Scotland remain profoundly unaware of how and where the food they eat – and its ingredients – are produced.”
“I was profoundly depressed on a plane returning to Edinburgh recently. There were good food deli packs, meal deals and low calorie sandwiches on offer BUT the Kid’s Pack consisted entirely of highly processed food with special treats of sweets and chocolate spread with a fizzy drink!” Try to read what is planned, and if you have strong views tell the Government what you think should happen.
“Many people in Scotland are disconnected from their food. There are considerable efforts being made in schools and elsewhere, to engage with children.
In our area schools are helping children to eat better and breakfast clubs give many young pupils a good start to their learning day.

Allotment holders grow food and involve their kids in understanding where food originates. Still there is much, much more we can do for ourselves. Food is the fuel for life and preparing, cooking, sharing and eating it is a cultural event every day of our lives. We need to consider what we buy and how much we eat. Processed food forms the bulk of most people’s diet, but this can change. If we cook we know what we are giving our family and we are in greater control of the quality of our diet. In the long run it is cheaper to cook, even when you take account of fuel costs. It need not take much more time to prepare a family meal especially if weekly shopping is planned with this in mind. Uncooked ingredients keep better than ready meals and leftovers are often the base for soup or a casserole later. If you learn good eating and exercising habits from birth you are more likely to keep fit and well the rest of your life. I was profoundly depressed on a plane returning to Edinburgh recently. There were good food deli packs, meal deals and low calorie sandwiches on offer BUT the Kid’s Pack consisted entirely highly processed food with special treats of sweets and chocolate spread with a fizzy drink! If we continue this double-think we will never reduce the heart, obesity and diabetes statistics of the nation. August is a good time to eat well. There is an abundance of fruit, veg and fish in season.
Salmon steaks with a green sauce 1 packet watercress and spinach leaves Small onion finely chopped Lemon juice Olive oil, pepper, 1 salmon steak per person Heat a little oil and cook the onion till pale and soft Add the leaves and cook all together till wilted. Add a little water and lemon juice and wiz with a hand blender or liquidizer. Keep warm. Either bake in a hot oven or grill the fish, turning once. Add any fish juices to the sauce and reheat. Serve with small new potatoes and perhaps a tomato, cucumber and olive salad.
Poached peaches, nectarines, apricots or plums Either cook one type of fruit or a mixture as you prefer. Wash the fruit. Cut each fruit in half and remove the stone. With nut crackers crack the stones and put the kernels in the pan with the fruit. Add about 2 pudding spoonfuls of sugar and a very little water (just to prevent burning). Bring slowly to the boil. Turn the fruit to make sure it cooks evenly. Serve cooling or cold with plain yoghurt. For an indulgence have a shortbread or ginger biscuit. Any leftovers could go as the base of an up-sidedown cake.

Back to School
years. And despite getting filthy during term time (forgotten remains of snacks, leaked pens... the usual bottom-of-bag mess that is familiar to any parent) it looks as good as new when it comes out of the washing machine.
August, and it’s back to school time. And every August we’re reminded of the brutal truth that children grow.
Nevertheless, kids grow and kids use things up, and you’re faced with two choices every August: either buy cheap stuff that may not last the year, or buy expensive stuff that they’re going to grow out of well before it wears out.
School uniform shopping
Besides uniform of course there is also the new stationery, bag, calculator, ring binders and all the other bits and pieces that seem to need replacing every time they go back to school. But as a society we're becoming more and more conscious of waste and realising that you don't actually have to replace everything every year just for the sake of having something new. I'm happy to report that as my daughter heads into S5 she will be using the same school bag that I got her for the princely sum of £9 when she went into S2. It has survived amazingly, hauling all her senior school books around for three
Most of our local schools sell second-hand uniform through the year where you can pick up good quality second-hand uniform. If you've bought good stuff that's still serviceable but your children have outgrown, take it to the school so that a) someone else can get the benefit of it and b) the school gets much-needed funds from the sales. There used to be a stigma attached to second hand clothes but increasingly it's seen as a responsible and perfectly acceptable option.

Local Life
Bathgate Music Festival 2014 4th to 7th September Now in its 7th year, the Bathgate Music Festival has gone from strength to strength and 2014 will be no exception. The festival aims to celebrate numerous different styles of music such as jazz, soul, traditional, classic and rock music and will feature a combination of professional musicians, bands and local performers. The BMF is predominantly a FREE music festival open to all genres and ages. We aim to increase the profile of the local musicians and bring new music into West Lothian through the various events that we run. Over the main Festival weekend this year we will be running in excess of 30 events in local bars, restaurants and venues. A large outdoor festival stage will be erected in the centre of the town, at the Steelyard, on the Saturday where live music will be played throughout the day from some big up-andcoming artists such as Pronto Mama and The La Fontaines who went down a storm at T-In-The-Park last weekend. The full schedule of events will shortly be available on www.bathgatemusicfestival.com The Ambition Bathgate and the wider West Lothian community has a very strong musical heritage and passion and it’s the overall aim of the BMF Committee to nurture and promote this heritage for the local residence and businesses.
The Support As this is a free festival we rely fully on the support and funding from local businesses and organisations and we are extremely grateful to all the sponsors for supporting BMF2014, without your continued support we simply could not make this happen. If you would like to get involved via sponsorship for BMF2015 please get in touch at enquiries@ bathgatemusicfestival.com The Committee A tireless bunch of volunteers of all ages and walks of life dedicate their spare time to making sure the festival runs smoothly. The year long process starts immediately after the festival ends in September and again without the dedication and hard work from this team we would not be able to achieve this. If you would like to join the BMF2015 committee please get in touch at enquiries@bathgatemusicfestival. com West Lothian Schools Now firmly an annual event the BMF committee for the first time this year worked closely with the West Lothian Schools to run an inter-school Battle of the Bands competition. 2 Heats and a Final saw around 20 local youth bands come together to fight for some amazing prizes. Watch out for the announcements for the 2015 West Lothian Schools Battle of the Bands towards the end of the year.
