Hello neighbours Welcome to the July issue of the Konect Directory. It’s holiday month for many of us, so here’s hoping for a return of the lovely weather we had in the spring! There’s plenty going on in the area if you’re staying home this year – from activities for families, eating out, taking time to do some DIY or whatever else you’ve got lined up for the holidays - within the pages of this magazine you’ll find a local business that can help! This month you have the chance to nominate someone deserving of a bouquet of flowers from local florist Vicky’s Flowers. Turn to page 14 to find out how. Congratulations to Gordon Dewar of Mid Calder who won the crossword prize last month. This month you could win a children’s craft session at Honey Pot Ceramics. This could be ideal if you’re looking for something to do with the

children or grandchildren one day during the holidays, so try the crossword on page 40. We’ve put together a summer holiday activity guide on page 46, as well as all the usual columns and features. We’re looking for more people to help with the door to door delivery of the magazine, so if you would like to be paid for a few hours gentle exercise each month, please get in touch - email distribution@ konectdirectory.co.uk or call Lesley on 01506 668580 Thanks for reading the Konect Directory, we’ll be back next month...

Almondell Shetland Pony Stud, Kirknewton
L
ike many locals who regularly pass the fields of Shetland ponies in Kirknewton, I’ve stopped at the side of the road several times this year to admire the foals. I decided to visit the stud and learn more about these intriguing ponies and the people who breed them. Stud owner Frances says, “I have always loved horses and after reading about the history of these fabulous little ponies I established the Almondell Shetland Pony Stud in 2006. We now breed both black and coloured standard ponies. All our ponies are micro-chipped and registered with The Shetland Pony Stud Book Society.” The focus of the stud is on breeding a pony with correct conformation and showing them at various venues across Scotland. The first stage in attempting to breed the “perfect pony” is to choose top quality bloodlines. There is no guarantee though, and it’s only when the foals are born that
they can see whether they made the right decision. Breeders have to take a lot into consideration such as the bone in the legs, the proportions of the body, the chest, shoulder and quantity of hair. A good Shetland pony has a large chest cavity for strong lungs as traditionally they have been work-horses. They are remarkably strong for their size, and pound for pound the Shetland pony is believed to be the strongest equine stronger than a Clydesdale - even though it is the smallest of our native breeds. There are accounts of a fully-grown stag being strapped onto the back of a Shetland pony and being carried home through the hills. Shetland ponies are very hardy and can survive the toughest of winters. Their coat changes according to the seasons, acquiring a thick, double coat in winter with guard hairs which shed the rain and keep the pony’s skin virtually dry. With little or no shelter on Shetland’s heather clad hills, these coats are the ponies’ insurance for survival. The harsh climate on the Islands also meant that there was no lush grazing but the pony survived, supplementing its diet by feeding on seaweed at low tide. Over the years these little ponies have evolved into hardy, versatile, intelligent animals well adapted for living in their natural environment during the worst of weather. The Kirknewton ponies are out all year round, even during the harsh winter we had earlier this year, living on hay for weeks while the ground was covered in snow. The mares foal in the field between April and June each year, usually with very little help.
There are three categories of ponies at Almondell Shetland Pony Stud – broodmares, show ponies and family ponies. They have collected prizes for their ponies over the years although none of their ponies have yet r Frances participated in the Shetland Pony Grand ne ow ud St etland Pony National – but never say never! Shetland Almondell Sh their ponies. of ponies also put on a display at the e on h it w at an event
Olympia horse show in London. One of their ponies, Mack, is quite a personality and loves chewing gently on your hand, which is lovely except when he wants to do it all the way round the show ring! He also lifts his head to get his reward – a kiss on the nose! People may look into the field and see a dozen Shetland ponies and wonder how can they tell who is who, but every pony has its own personality and is easy to identify. They are very clever and curious which makes them easy to train. Shetlands make wonderful family ponies and are ideal for children’s first ponies. They have a natural affinity with children and their willingness to oblige makes them popular with riding for disabled groups too. Almondell Shetlands pride themselves on their ponies being friendly and easy to handle. Their aim is to breed ponies with correct conformation, straight, free action and a kind temperament. From birth, each foal has plenty of attention and handling, making them well-mannered and a pleasure to own. They currently have ponies for sale suitable as pets or companions for other horses, for further information please see their website at www.almondellshetlands.co.uk.
Frances concludes, “We consider ourselves very fortunate to have the opportunity to own, look after and love these lovely ponies and hope they have also brought pleasure to those who have stopped on the roadside to watch them each year at foaling time!” The Shetland pony ha s for at least four thousa been in existence have been exported nd years. They thr and used to carry ou oughout the world t many tasks. In the days before roads the pony was usually seen pulling a cart or carrying baskets laden with peat and sea a special wooden sad weed. They wore dle which supported a lar called a klibber ge baskets on each side called kishies. Th ey cultivating the land an were also used for d bringing in the crops, covering many miles daily, as well as being able to carrying a on their back. During full-grown man the 19th century thousands of Shetland s mainland to work do came to the wn the mines as pit ponies, including in the mines. Many too were West Lothian shale United States to work exported to the in the mines there. They would work un derground hauling coal for their entire live s, rarely coming to the surface. Their wo depended on the col rking conditions liery manager.

Thought for the Month By Jackie Whigham
The World is Your Mirror You see the world as you are and not as it is. You project the inner world of your mind onto your outer world. The world you see is mirroring back to you, your thoughts and the belief systems you have about yourself and your life. Recognise if you have an angry hostile mind, then that is the world you will see. If you have a happy and peaceful mind, then that is the world you will see. As we learn this universal truth we begin to recognise the importance of having a good relationship with ourselves. Everything you think and feel about yourself is transmitted onto the outside world where it is picked up by all, whether you or they recognise it or not.
Beuty
Therefore, be your own best friend. Look for the good in yourself so you can see the good in others. Take time to build your self esteem, since the lack of it is where most personal problems arise. Developing your inner self allows you to broadcast your innate beauty onto the outside world. Although this beauty is like an invisible light, it is seen by all and all are attracted to it. The more beauty you see in yourself the more beauty you will see in your world. And as you give to the world so the world will give to you. If there is anything you’d like to ask me about or write about you can reach me at jackiewhigham1@aol.com. Have a happy day!

Mix, stir and paint at Honey Pot Ceramics
I
drop the orange colouring into the molten mixture and swirl it around, add the sweet orange scent and pour the scented mixture into the mould... I am at Honey Pot Ceramics, located in the Climbing Centre complex at Ratho, and am making soap. I have chosen fish shapes from the range of soap moulds and decided to make glittery goldfish mini-soaps with an orange scent to go with the colour. But there is any combination of shapes, colours and scents to choose from; it’s part of the fun of making cosmetics at Honey Pot Ceramics, the only venue in the Edinburgh area where you can make your own cosmetics from quality ingredients. Honey Pot owner Juliet Russell explains, “There are a lot of restrictions and regulations to meet in order to make cosmetics. We use only cosmetic-grade ingredients, and our recipes are approved by an independent chemist.” Besides soap, you can make lip balms, lip gloss, shower gel/bath bubbles, bath bombs and body glitter gel. For all of them you can add extra effects such as flower petals, glitter or even plastic bugs! They are great fun to create, and they make excellent gifts – once finished, you add your own labels and they are gift-wrapped in cellophane ready to take away. For a special gift, you could move on to ceramic painting in the studio while your soap sets, and paint a soap holder or other ceramic item to go with it. There is a wide selection of ceramic items to paint and staff on hand to help with painting techniques, for both adults and children. Honey Pot is run by Juliet Russell who opened the business here at Ratho last October. She has always been a keen amateur potter and firmly believes that everybody can be creative – you just need to have a go. The strap line of the business is “be amazed at what you can do” and their customers prove this over and over again. Juliet ran Honey Pot as a mobile business in the Borders before settling back in the Edinburgh area and finally deciding to take the plunge, leaving her comfortable job as a Human Resources consultant and setting up her own business.

The range of beads and other decorations means there is something for everyone to manage - from preschoolers (large holes for easy threading) through to more intricate items for adults. The Value of Census Records Family history column by Maureen McIntyre
A
ll of us will have filled in a census questionnaire recently. A census of Scotland’s people has been taken every 10 years, in one form or another, since the early 1800’s and is a valuable tool for those researching their family tree. The records are closed to the public for 100 years but those already searching will have found the recent release of the 1911 census a huge bonus to their tree. The first census to record people’s names was taken in 1841 and as this was before compulsory registration, which started in 1855, it gives a great insight into the lives of our ancestors. But there are a few factors you need to be aware of when using this census : • Unlike later census records the birth place was not recorded; the question asked of the people was ‘were you born in this county?’ and the answer would be either Yes or No. • Ages of adults were rounded up or down, in most cases to the nearest 5, but the majority of children’s ages were more accurately recorded. • Many of the census records for Fife were lost during the transportation of the documents to Edinburgh. • Many areas recorded a married woman’s maiden name as opposed to her married name, so if you cannot find your ancestor using her married name you should try searching under her maiden name. The information recorded in each census is only as accurate as the person recording and the person giving the information wanted it to be. I could not find my MacKenzie ancestors in the 1851 census. I knew that they came from a small community in the Gairloch called Mellon Udrigle as I had traced them on the 1841 and 1861 census. I had searched MACKENZIE and MCKENZIE with no luck so decided to search the census for the area page by page and found them listed as MCKINSIE. I know that the family at 24
this time would have spoken only Gaelic (as would most of the population of the area at this time) and that they could neither read or write so these facts no doubt contributed to the wrong recording of the family name.
The census records are a huge resource but if you are unable to find your family don’t give up too easily, they will be there you may just need to dig a little deeper. Genealogy is fast becoming one of the most popular hobbies in the country with people becoming addicted to finding out all they can about their ancestors. Searching through family papers and the birth, marriage and death records will enable most researchers to build a reasonable family tree, but there are many obstacles in the way to even this basic search. Overcoming these obstacles comes with experience so those starting out on this journey should not be put off at the first hurdle. I have just finished 3 years of study at the University of Strathclyde in Genealogy, so if you are just starting your tree or if you are having problems with any of your branches please email me and I will endeavour to help. Please email me rootsandbranches@hotmail.co.uk

Breath of fresh air in Mid Calder By Karen Murray
S
ometimes it is great just to pop out for a quick walk, a breath of fresh air and simply enjoy the birdsong you’ll hear, the flora and fauna you’ll spot if you’re lucky. Ten to fifteen minutes can refresh both body and mind and be a great de-stresser. If you happen to live in Mid Calder there are several spots for a wee wander, and even if you don’t live there you can always park the car while driving through and take the air, as they say… One such stroll begins at a small car park at the Mid Calder entrance to the Almondell Country Park. From here you cross a footbridge over the tumbling Linhouse Water and then you are into the park where there are several trails to follow, one being the number 75 cycle path which will ultimately lead through East Calder, Kirknewton and on to Edinburgh. However for a shorter walk, ignore the trails and take the few steps that lead down to the right after the bridge, taking you to the water’s edge. There is a rough and narrow path that has been worn along the side of the water and following it will lead you through an arch of trees, wild flowers of all colours growing each side and the sound of birdsong to accompany the rush of the water. The track eventually heads up and away from the water to bring you out onto the main road bridge where you can cross the other side of the road, turn right over the bridge and continue until you see the footpath on the left just before the Torphichen Arms, signed for Calderwood and Oakbank. As the path drops down quite steeply through the lovely manicured gardens and
30
into the valley, it forks, with each path leading to a different footbridge. The right bridge crosses the Murieston Water, while the left crosses the combined Murieston and Linhouse Waters. You can then simply enjoy the view from either bridge and retrace your steps back up to the road, cross over and back to car park - a short walk enjoyed in some lovely countryside or perhaps a grabbed moment of fresh air during a lunch break. However if you do have some extra time or a longer lunch break - you could extend the walk by continuing over the bridge to an information board where you can find out more about the wildlife you may find in Calder Wood. The path forks again. Take the left hand path -the green trail - and stay on this main path keeping the gorge on your left. At a marker post, take the right path - the yellow trail - to return or continue straight on the green trail until the path veers right. Keep taking right turns until you find yourself above Murieston Water - the path will eventually return you to the information board you passed earlier. Go left and return to Mid Calder. The full walk is probably around three miles and will take about 1.5 hours. So depending on the time you have available or the mood you are in, you can opt for the short de-stresser or a longer walk, both equally enjoyable and the perfect way to get into the countryside while not going far from a built up area.

Vet’s Tip: Pet First Aid
A
n important point to remember if you find an animal requiring first aid is to keep calm and use your common sense. Food and water should never be offered to an animal that requires first aid – it may worsen their condition and delay veterinary treatment. Medications (e.g. paracetamol and ibuprofen) should never be administered to an animal, as they can be toxic. A traffic accident is a common situation where first aid may be required. If the animal is collapsed and unable to move, it may have spinal damage or broken bones. The
best way to move the animal is to slide it on to a large towel or blanket without moving any limbs or the head. The blanket can then be used as a stretcher to transport the animal in to and out of a car. It can be very useful to have a pet first aid kit in the home, and for dog owners, one in the car too. A cut pad whilst out on your walk can produce a lot of blood. Having basic bandaging materials to hand not only helps keep a wound clean before being attended to by a vet, but it can help control the flow of blood from the cut. Ask your vet or vet nurse about items for making up your pet first aid kit. In any situation, calling your veterinary practice for advice, and give as much information as possible, is the best course of action you can do.

Strawberries and Cream Cake
T
urn a simple Victoria sponge into something extra special with some juicy strawberries and lashing of cream. Time to get the best china out and have friends round for afternoon tea! INGREDIENTS 225g (8oz) unsalted butter, softened 225g (8oz) caster sugar 4 large eggs, beaten 1 tsp vanilla extract 225g (8oz) self raising flour, sifted 1-2 tbsp milk FILLING 3 tbsp strawberry jam, sieved 175g (6oz) strawberries 300ml (1/2pt) double cream Icing sugar to dust
Bake the sponges in the preheated oven for 20-25 mins until risen, golden brown and springy to the touch. Leave the cakes to cool in the tins for 5 mins then carefully turn them out onto a cooling rack. Peel off the lining paper and leave to cool completely. For the filling, hull and slice nearly all the strawberries (reserving a couple for decoration) and mix with the sieved jam. Sandwich the sponges together with the cream and strawberries. Dust the top thickly with icing sugar and decorate with the reserved strawberries.
Preheat the oven to 180C, 350F, Gas Mark 4. Grease and base line two 20cm (8in) round, loose-based cake tins. Place the butter and sugar in a large bowl and beat with a wooden spoon or electric whisk until pale and creamy. Gradually beat in the eggs and vanilla extract, adding a spoonful of the flour if the mixture begins to curdle. Using a metal spoon gently fold in the rest of the flour and enough of the milk to give a soft dropping consistency. Divide the mixture between the cake tins and gently level the surfaces. 38

Exchange experience at Balerno High School
I
am Mateo Louapre from Lorient in Brittany, France. For the last six months I have been living in Kirknewton and going to Balerno High School. I am on a language exchange, the name is ALLEF.
My time in Balerno High School was really good . When I arrived in the school, I received a very good welcome from all the students. I wasn’t alone, some children came and spoke to me, I made new friends. The teachers are very nice and much more interesting than my teachers in France. What surprises me most is when the teachers are speaking in France nearly nobody listens, whereas here everybody listens. There is more respect between the staff and the students. Balerno High School is much bigger than my school in France. In France school starts at 8.00am and we finish at 5.00pm. It’s cool to finish earlier because we have more time with friends
My English has improved a lot because when I arrived I couldn’t follow a conversation, I couldn’t say anything, I couldn’t read a book. I did English in school in France but was very rubbish at it. I really enjoyed Scotland.
I just think it’s a bit sad that when you meet your friends here you just say “hi” - it’s a bit cold. In France you shake hands and in Germany you give them a hug. At home in France I do parkour and was very happy to discover a good parkour group in Edinburgh that I go to every Saturday afternoon. Parkour is a French sport which consists of going from one point to another point as fast as possible including climbing, running, jumping, swinging and so on. 42
Your child can become truly bilingual, living in a selected German or French family. A fantastic experience where the benefits last a life-time.
ALLEF
is a charity organising linguistic exchanges for children aged 8 - 13. Interested? Call 01325 359954 or visit www.ALLEF.org

Guides I
f you are looking for a new challenge, a way of making new friends and of doing interesting things from baking to abseiling, making jewellery to outdoor activities, then joining your local guide unit might just be what you are looking for. Girl Guiding was born in 1910 - led by Agnes Baden-Powell, sister of Robert Baden-Powell who established the Scouting movement in 1907. Never to be underestimated, when girls heard about the scouting movement, they wanted to be a part of it and they got their wish. Of course things have gone full circle and there are many scout units around the country who include girls among them. However, girls do do it differently and there is nothing better than getting together with a bunch of like-minded girls and having a lot of fun. Guides is for girls aged between 10 and 14 and units meet weekly. Working towards various badges is all part of the challenge and there is a great sense of achievement in completing the work towards a badge, be that craft or cook, party planner or camper, first aid or performing arts. There are also ‘go for it’ activity packs for your patrol which again encompass all manner of activities or interests. Girl Guiding celebrated its centenary in style last year and this year - in fact this month Scottish guides are pleased to be hosting the 34th World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts annual conference, being held in Edinburgh. If you want to broaden your horizons, learn new skills and be part of a much wider group of girls, then come along to your local guide unit to find out more. The East Calder Guide Unit is always looking for more guides to join. They meet either on a Monday or a Wednesday evening in East Calder Primary School between 7.30 and 9pm and are a very welcoming group. Call Maureen on 07979 202640 for further information.
