Queen's Baton Relay Queen's Baton Relay coming to West Lothian Sunday 15th June The Glasgow 2014 Queen’s Baton Relay will take in breathtaking scenery, iconic landmarks, remote outposts and city arenas on its tour before arriving in Glasgow this summer.
The relay will finish its West Lothian leg in Livingston and the two main events are a parade to precede the Baton's arrival and a celebration event held in Howden Park.
It will be West Lothian’s turn to host the Glasgow 2014 Queen’s Baton Relay on Sunday 15th June.
To precede the Baton's arrival there will be a parade along the Boulevard. Groups represented will include local schools, sports clubs and gymnastic display teams.
Some 100 hand-picked baton- bearers in West Lothian will lead the baton relay through towns and a programme of events is planned in each town to mark the relay. Events will take place along the baton relay route which will include Whitburn, Bathgate, Broxburn, Linlithgow and Armadale. The route will finish in Livingston and events are planned in each of the towns. West Lothian Council Leader John McGinty said: “We are delighted that the baton will be coming through West Lothian on its historic journey. “We have a fantastic programme of events planned for the day, running all day, giving West Lothian residents of all ages the opportunity to show their support for Glasgow 2014. We know already from the response to events running in our schools that there is a real appetite to embrace the games and get involved.” Depute Provost Dave King added: “West Lothian has 100 baton bearers, including a pupil from every secondary school, who will play an important part in the celebrations taking place throughout the day. I was fortunate enough to be on the selection committee for West Lothian and was hugely impressed with the standard of nominations. “We are encouraging families to join in the celebrations by lining the streets and enjoying the festivities across our towns and villages."

The parade will continue along the Boulevard, past the skate park, in front of the civic centre and into Howden Park. In the build-up to the parade, there will be street performances and events including gymnastic displays in the Centre, a performance of 'The Pokey Hat' from Grinagog Theatre Company and the chance to climb a mobile climbing wall or take part in an Army assault course. In Howden Park, a variety of community art and sport groups will display stalls alongside providing tasters and demonstrations which will include judo, football, gymnastics, cricket and tae-kwon-do. Other activities will include young people's crosscountry event; mini Commonwealth Games and demonstrations from West Lothian Xcite. A stage will be erected and managed by a commentator in Howden Park where various activities will take place throughout the day, including athlete interviews; performances from local choir groups and a professional band to round off the event. Summer is nearly upon us at last. Following on from the fitness feature in the last issue, this month we've been consulting with local hair and beauty salons to bring you their top tips for hair and beauty this season. From styles and colours to sun-protection and water-proofing, read through their tips and check through the adverts for special offers to make sure you're ready for the season!
How to maintain your hair colour over the summer by Utopia Hair and Beauty
We all know that the sun is public enemy no. 1 for those glossy, subtly weaved highlights. So along with the sun cream and sun glasses, don't forget the sun-cream for your hair. Whether preserving your natural hair hue or maintaining a new colour treatment, you want your colour to last as long as the summer. With great hair comes great responsibility. It is really important over the summer months to put extra care into hydrating and nourishing . If you are dipping in and out of the pool remember and apply conditioning protectants and , if you are serious about protecting your colour then yes, a swim cap! Use a colour protection shampoo to help shield
12 konect
your hair from the sun. Protect with a leave-in conditioning spray for nourishment and help against fade and heat damage. This season turbans and headbands are a few favourite summer trends and perfect for coloured hair. Try a DIY avocado hair mask in order to hydrate colour treated hair. Blend crushed avocado, honey, buttermilk, olive oil and lemon. apply to hair for 30 min. Conditioning the hair is the no. 1 priority for colour treated hair. Dry shampoo is the way to go for coloured hair as over-washing can lead to dryness and cause fade, so stick to dry shampoo to avoid stripping it of its colour.

Natural Skincare How you view your skin and how you look after it are vitally important in how you look to others and how you feel within. I believe your skin is your greatest asset. As your largest organ, it deserves that extra TLC on the outside. Of course, it is important to consider your diet and the exercise you take as these also impact on your skin’s health. One thing we should consider is using products with completely natural ingredients. Founded by Susan Ma with Lord Alan Sugar as her business partner, the Tropic Skincare range of products are derived from 100% pure plant extracts, are honestly priced and are naturally effective on all skin types. All products are hand-made in Great Britain with the freshest ingredients. They are one of the few skincare companies who
by Linda Bibby
formulate, develop and manufacture all their skincare products in house. By being passionate about what they do they constantly research, develop and embrace the latest skincare innovations. Tropic is the first skincare company to list all of their responsibly sourced natural ingredients in plain English on their products. Their moisturiser for example contains raspberry oil which is a natural SPF. Susan was taught to only put onto her skin what she would put in her belly! Tropic skincare is proudly certified by the Vegan Society and every one of the Tropic products carries the ‘Leaping Bunny’ symbol and is certified by the BUAV. Vogue Magazine said of Tropic Skincare “Organic, ethical & healthy”
Summer feet by Livingston Chiropody and Podiatry
We are all working longer and harder these days, which makes our holidays all the more important. Whether it’s a relaxing beach holiday or a busy city break you will no doubt want to enjoy your time away pain free and in comfort. We'd like to share the following tips to get the most out of your getaway. Firstly, most people on holiday do more walking than they would normally. Appropriate footwear should therefore be worn. New shoes are fine for wearing to dinner in the evenings and flip-flops are fine for short trips to the pool or beach, however nothing puts a dampener on a holiday quite like blisters caused by new shoes or a painful heel or arches caused by flip-flops. Secondly, if you are going somewhere sunny, remember to apply sun-cream to the tops of your feet (unless of course you’re a socks and sandals
14 konect
person...) The skin on the top of your feet is sensitive, especially as it rarely sees the sun in Scotland! Having burnt feet is no fun. Lastly, if you currently have any problems with your feet – be it an ingrown or painful toe nail, hard, rough or thick skin, corns, veruccas, a fungal infection of nail or skin or any other foot, ankle or leg problem – these are unlikely to improve while on holiday and in fact may get worse. We would recommend seeking help before you jet off. As your local foot care provider, we at Livingston Chiropody & Podiatry are here to help you get the most out of your well-earned break. We are open Monday to Saturday with late evening appointments available. Call 01506 466006 for an appointment.

Spotlight on
Aqua Beauty
A new venue for Pumpherson with beauty, fitness and children's activities Aqua Beauty opened recently in the large building at 93 Uphall Station Road in Pumpherston, and judging by the many ideas and plans that proprietor Karen Ramsey has in mind for it, it will be a valuable asset to Pumpherston and and wider community. The premises is very spacious and Karen is full of plans for a range of services. Besides beauty services (Karen is a beautician with 15 years experience under her belt) the first new service to be offered is selfdefence classes for women. Karen explains, “My clientele is primarily female, and I wanted to offer a complementary service. I'm alarmed by the number of attacks on women reported in the area, and as a mother of a teenage daughter I started looking into self defence classes.”
“When I moved to Pumpherston with my children, I struggled to find activities for them to do in the village. I previously worked at the Almond Valley Heritage farm running children's activities programmes, so have experience in that area and am keen to bring opportunities for children to the village.”
Aqua has been short-listed for the Scottish Hair and Beauty Awards this year.
The classes are up and running, and are run by Scott White of Tactical Edge, who teaches techniques to help prevent women getting into a dangerous situation in the first place, and a range of Mixed Martial Arts defence skills. The course has been running in Bannantynes Gym in Livingston for a while, and Aqua in Pumpherston is their second venue. Besides the self defence classes, fitness classes are run at Aqua, including the popular Step, Attack and Combat classes, as well as Metafit. The Metafit classes are delivered by Gordon Wright of WrightFit. Making the most use of the spacious premises, a children's pottery and jewellery-making
16 konect
workshop was launched in May, and Karen is currently devising a children's summer holiday activity club.
Children's fencing classes are in the pipeline too (run by Gordon Wright) so quite a range of different activities will be available. All this of course is besides the beauty treatments available at Aqua, which include hot stone massage, semi permanent eye lash extensions, acrylic nails, facials, waxing, manicures and pedicures. Aqua has been short-listed for the Scottish Hair and Beauty Awards this year.
Their large premises allows for several beauty treatment rooms, a large area for the classes, and further rooms that are currently being commissioned for the children's activities. This is potentially a great venue for Pumpherston. Call in at Aqua to see for yourself and get the latest news on services and activities being added! Toning Treatments by The Toning & Beauty Clinic
A whole different field of beauty treatments deals with ways of tackling cellulite and muscle tone insalon. The local experts are the Toning and Beauty Clinic, who explain the treatments : Cellulite can be treated by Acoustic Wave Therapy. This treatment uses pressure waves to break up fat in the connective tissue releasing the dimpled effect we know as cellulite. This produces a smoother surface, thickens the dermis and decreases fat protrusion. The vibration from the pressure waves also has the added advantage of toning the muscles. A Toning treatment consists of pads placed on the main parts of the body you wish to tone – stomach, thighs etc. A current passes through the pads picking up and contracting the muscle, which in turn works the fat off the muscle.
A 45 minute session is equivalent to approximately a three hour workout at the gym. Finally Inchloss wraps such as Shrinking Violet – an oil based wrap, and nsl – a shea butter based wrap, are a fantastic kick-start to any inchloss programme. Full measurements are taken before and after. All the treatments above are combined with healthy eating, drinking lots of water and also exercise. At The Toning & Beauty Clinic we offer advice and encouragement every step of the way to have you looking and feeling your very best. A free trial and consultation are given on Toning and Acoustic Wave Therapy. Give us a call on 01506 855105 to book now to get in shape for summer.

Summer Prep for Nails by Victoria of Hey Gorgeous
Nails are the core of beautiful hands. Well groomed, glossy nails grab the attention of others - it does convey a lot about you. • Using a base coat is essential if you want a professional looking finish to your manicure. It noticeably extends the life of your polish and gives the colour something to stick to. A base coat also acts as a protective coat for your nails, preventing discolouration from strong or dark coloured polish. • 'Capping' your polish around the free edge of your nails can act as a cushion for your nails and prevent the ends from cracking and splitting. • Acrylic and gel nail enhancements are incredibly popular treatments at the moment on the run up to summer. In the sun however, these treatments are vulnerable to staining and peeling. Prevent this from happening by wiping your nails
after sun lotions are applied and using almond oil daily to rehydrate your lovely nails! • The condition of your nails can reflect your health including folic acid in your diet is a little easier in the summer months. Whole grains, berries and citrus fruits are packed with folic acid, increasing the strength and flexibility of your nails. • A pedicure is an excellent summer prep for our tootsies! Always trim toe nails straight across, preventing toe nails from curling and growing into the skin surrounding your nail plate. Rehydrate your toe nails and feet with an almond oil - even olive oil! - and encapsulate this with a rich moisturising cream. The moisturiser locks in the oil, allowing your toe nail and skin to be nourished and rehydrated - just in time for summer, flip flops and wine!

Stress and Hypnotherapy by Bernie Rowen Consulting Most of us know that stress can be debilitating. Symptoms can include headaches, shaking, forgetfulness, sleeplessness, anger, frustration and a general feeling of discomfort. Hypnotherapy seeks to inform the conscious mind through accessing the sub conscious mind while the client is in a very relaxed state. The hypnotherapist gives the subconscious mind trigger words to assist in relaxing the client and encourage them to maintain relaxation by training the mind. A clinical hypnotherapist does not: make anyone do anything they do not want to. Stage and entertainment hypnotherapy is completely different - it is there to entertain. Clinical hypnotherapy is used to assist in healing various problems, from anxiety and stress to stopping smoking, weight loss and dealing with fears and phobias. We assist young people in a positive attitude towards
exam anxiety as well. We treat people who suffer from a fear of flying and even arachnophobia, and agoraphobia. A session is 50mins long and the therapist should be registered with a controlling body, such as the National Council of Psychotherapists. To learn more give Bernie a call to make an appointment on 07736 067227. Bernie Rowen is a registered psychotherapist with many a modality under her belt. She brings a fresh idea to counseling and talking therapy by the inclusion of astrology data to develop the most individual treatment possible, so why not invest in yourself?

Spotlight on
Fair Deal Autos The Fair Deal Autos brand is already well-known and respected in Bathgate, where their first garage opened 10 years ago. A few years later they added a garage on Gorgie Road in Edinburgh and, going from strength to strength, they have recently opened their third garage in Polbeth Industrial Estate, near West Calder. I met owner Arthur at the new Polbeth premises to find out what makes Fair Deal Autos different. “A lot of hard work and focus on customer service has got us to where we are today,” says Arthur. “We're an RAC approved garage, meaning we had to meet strict criteria required by Motor Codes to get the accreditation. We are audited by them on an annual basis.”
Motor Codes is the automotive consumer body which makes sure that customers are treated honestly and fairly by garages. It's a typical minefield for garage customers – how do you know that the quote you've been given for your vehicle repair is honest, fair and carried out competently when you don't know much about cars yourself?
“We want to look after customers from our local area, regardless of what car they drive, and we have the flexibility in-house to do that" Using an RAC approved garage is a good start! Fair Deal Autos carry out RAC and other companies' warranty repairs, and are proud to serve a huge range of customers who feel comfortable with the friendly and open approach they of the garage. The Motor Code also covers details such as the standard of the reception area. “We have wifi, kids' toys and coffee machines in our reception areas,” says Arthur. “Our Polbeth premises has a coffee shop just a few doors down so customers tend to go there for their coffee instead..” They are also part of the Auto Crew network, run by Bosch, which means they are Bosch approved too and have access to the latest technical data, diagnostic equipment and original equipment spare parts. Fair Deal Autos cater for all types of vehicles, be that top end luxury vehicles or your beloved banger. “We want to look after customers from our local area, regardless of what car they drive, and we have the flexibility in-house to do that. Each of our three garage premises has a “master mechanic” who has at least 25 years experience, and the combined experience of all staff at each garage adds up to over 100 years.” Between them, there is nothing they haven't seen in the trade. Despite opening only two months ago, Fair Deals Autos in Polbeth has already attracted new clients
from Polbeth and West Calder, as well as customers from other areas who already know and trust them coming to the new premises. Good customer service is a recurring theme in my conversation with Arthur, it is clearly something he is passionate about. I query him about his £25 MOT deal, as many people are suspicious of what is perceived as a cheap MOT, suspecting that their vehicle will be deliberately failed. “We've been offering £25 MOTs for about 9 years,” says Arthur. “Initially yes, it was hard to convince people that this is a genuine price and that we will not deliberately fail vehicles. But we have proved ourselves over the years. We rely on the increased business that this rate brings to make up any shortfall in income.” From starting out with one small garage, they have steadily expanded based on solid business practices, good service, repeat customers and word of mouth referrals. And it's not only customers who agree, as Arthur points out - “our Edinburgh branch is in a prime spot on Gorgie Road. The landlord would not normally
have given such a prime spot to a small business like ours. But having checked out our excellent record and business ethos, they decided to take us on as tenants.” Fair Deal Autos aims to provide dealer-level diagnostics and service at a much more reasonable rate than you would get at a dealer. With friendly staff, courtesy car and pick-up drop off services (subject to availability), Fair Deals Autos work hard to make sure your service and repair is a hassle-free experience.
“We've been offering £25 MOTs for about 9 years. Initially it was hard to convince people that this is a genuine price but we have proved ourselves over the years" konect 31

Technology
Something in the air:
The gadgets that promise an end to airborne irritants The arrival of better weather also means the arrival of airborne pollen and other irritants. That can mean misery for people with hay fever and other allergies. Could gadgets help? One solution promises to relieve symptoms by sticking lights up your nose - and while it may sound odd, many hay fever sufferers swear by it. The £39 Medinose may look ridiculous in use - the red light does a great job of making the user’s nose glow very red - but fans say it does a great job of reducing symptoms.
they’re useless against viruses, and you can often achieve similar results by addressing the root cause. For example, if you have a pet dander allergy an air cleaner can help, but swapping from carpet to laminated flooring and banning the dog from the sofa might be a better long-term solution.
Medinose Plus hay fever remedy
As with many alternative health products, however, there are plenty of disappointed customers on sites such as Amazon who say that it didn’t do anything at all. For many allergy sufferers, staying indoors and cleaning the air can be beneficial. Air purifiers fall into three main categories: standard purifiers, which pass air through special filters to remove small particles; air ionisers, which create negatively charged ions that attach themselves to dust and other airborne particles; and ozone generators, which produce a gas called ozone. Some models combine multiple categories, so for example you’ll often see air purifiers that also ionise the air.
Portable dehumidifier
Air purifiers aren’t particularly expensive - expect to pay around £20 to £40 for models suitable for small rooms, rising to £100-plus for heavy duty models. But make sure you’re looking for the acronym HEPA which stands for High Efficiency Particulate Absorption. Filters that meet the HEPA standard are excellent at filtering airborne irritants and organisms, but watch out for sneaky marketing: filters cannot partly meet the HEPA standard, so claims such as “99% HEPA” are meaningless. Filtering isn’t the only thing you can do in your home. Dehumidifiers remove damp and reduce condensation, which can help reduce or prevent mould and mildew and humidifiers make the air more moist.
Gel dehumidifier
While it’s possible to make your own humidifier with a bowl of water and a towel, dehumidifiers are more complex: chemical ones use a special gel that draws water from the air and are best suited to very small rooms or vehicles, while electric dehumidifiers use a refrigerant to cool the air and turn it into water.
The third category, ozone generators, is the most controversial: while manufacturers rightly claim that Vicks ioniser ozone can kill bacteria, they neglect to mention that the massive concentrations required to do so would probably kill The most powerful models can be connected to a people and animals too. permanent hose that pipes the excess water out of your house - useful if you need to dry a lot of clothes Unfortunately this is a sector where wild marketing indoors and don’t fancy emptying the water bucket claims abound. Generally speaking air filters and all the time. Expect to pay around £10 for a chemical cleaners can help with really big airborne particles dehumidifier and from £30 to more than £100 for an - dust, smoke, pollen, pet dander and so on - but electric one.

Recipe and Food Notes
Tomatoes
By Anne Pinkerton June is an easy time to eat in more healthily. When it's warm you don't feel so hungry, exercising outdoors is more enticing and the start of the harvest of delicious fruit and vegetables encourages us to eat in a better way. Tomatoes are the epitome of summer food. They are colourful, good to eat raw or cooked and are enjoyable in almost every different style of cooking. They are treated as a vegetable in almost every dish I can think of except the remarkably good, however unlikely, Campbell’s Tomato Soup Spice cake. More of that later. There used to be acres of glass houses in Ayrshire and the Channel Islands from whence we received the glowing red addition to our salad from April till end of October. However cheap gas and clever marketing by Dutch growers in the last 25 years - and the processed food industry giving us baked beans, tomato ketchup, concentrated soup and tinned tomatoes - have made tomatoes available all year and a staple in the shopping basket by which the cost of living index is calculated.
There are many varieties ranging hugely in shape and colour. Each has a different use in the kitchen. Don't shun the Italian tinned tomato - it is often better-flavoured than the over- plump taste-free, fresh object sold in our shops. Tomatoes need hot sun to develop their full flavour, so southern grown ones are often better. If you're lucky enough to have access to home grown fruit straight from the plant these are the ones to eat in the simplest way: sliced with black pepper, a little good oil a pinch of salt and sugar, as a salad. (If you were to add sliced avocado and real buffalo mozzarella fanned out on a blue plate then you have a feast for eyes and stomach). When tomatoes were not so commonplace they were made into mousse or jelly and offered at smart dinners as elegant starters with prawns or crab. Tomato juice is the main ingredient of the cocktail Bloody Mary and all there is in a Virgin Mary except Worcester sauce or a stick of celery to stir it with! The classic tomato/carbohydrate combination is Pasta Napolitana. For this the sauce needs to be well-reduced to concentrate the flavours. Own brand tetrapak chopped ungraded tomatoes are perfect and cost about 40p for 500g.
Tomato Sauce
They can be preserved by drying in the sun, sieving and concentrating into passata or canning whole or chopped, or concentrated as a puree. They are low in fat and sugars and high in anti-oxidants, vitamins and have fibre. They also combine with fish, chicken, other vegetables, pulses, spices, eggs and carbohydrates.

1 large onion, chopped fine 3 or 4 cloves of garlic pressed 1 large carrot grated 1 stick celery grated or chopped fine 500g tinned or tetrapak chopped tomatoes - if you do not use all of the tin/jar pour in oil to cover and make an airtight seal and keep it in the fridge Tablespoon tomato puree. Few basil leaves and/or parsley, thyme or other herb you like Salt, pepper, sugar and dash wine vinegar. Olive oil for cooking 1 2
Heat the oil in a saucepan, fry the onion till just starting to brown add the garlic and other veg. Fry for a moment getting it all hot, add the tomatoes bring to boil.
3 4
Add all the flavourings except the fresh herbs and cook together and reduce to a thick rich looking sauce. Add the herbs at the last and just cook through.
This will keep in the fridge. Use with pasta, as a cooking sauce for chicken or on pizza with other toppings. It can enrich beef stew or with some black olives added act as a base upon which to bake any white fish.
Stuffed Tomatoes
All around the Mediterranean each area has its own local version of this dish. In Greece they use cooked rice as the filler, in Italy polenta or small pasta, in France bread crumbs or cous cous, so this is a recipe to start you thinking. It is also good for using leftovers. 4 large tomatoes, lid cut off and the inside removed but reserved
1 onion, chopped 2 or so cloves garlic, crushed 100g minced meat, raw - lamb, beef, ham or chicken 4 tablespoons cooked rice Marjoram, oregano, chives or parsley chopped fine Little oil for cooking Salt, pepper, sugar, dash of vinegar, teaspoon tomato puree; all to taste 1 2 3 4 5 6
Heat the oven to 180oc. Fry the onions add the meat and brown add the tomato flesh, garlic and the rice cook all together. Then add the flavourings to taste. Cook for a minute and then pile all the filling into the hollowed out tomatoes. Bake for about 30 minutes till brown and bubbling. Serve with a salad for lunch or supper.
Unlikely as it may sound - Tomato Soup Cake Like its cousins the carrot, courgette and beetroot cakes, this came from America. It is moist and good; tomatoes have an affinity with spices, dried fruit and sugar. Original recipe makes 10” square cakes. 1 can condensed tomato soup 1 teaspoon baking soda 1 cup white sugar 1 egg 1/3 cup butter ½ teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon ½ teaspoon ground cloves 1.5 cups self raising flour 1 cup raisins 1 Combine the tomato soup and the soda in a bowl, and let it stand. 2 Cream sugar, egg, butter, salt, cinnamon, and cloves. Mix in tomato soup and soda mixture, and then flour. Stir in the raisins, and pour the batter in a greased baking dish. 3 Bake at 160oc for 1 hour, or until done. 4 Cool the cake, and top with cream cheese icing.

Charity of the Month
The Food Train, West Lothian The Food Train is a Scottish charity with local volunteers, providing a vital grocery delivery service to older people across West Lothian. Also on offer is Food Train Extra, which is about doing small household tasks within a customer's home. Most recently launched is the outreach library service. Food Train aims to be a ‘one stop shop' for older people – by providing services that are preventative and support people to live independently at home for as long as they are able and choose to do so. If you or someone you know is 65 or over, and finds it difficult or impossible to do the regular grocery shop, the Food Train may be able to help. There is a £1 annual membership fee, and once you're a member you have access to the range of services on offer from Food Train.
SERVICES 1 Food shopping
You complete a shopping list which is collected by Food Train volunteers. Your order is then packed in the shop in a box, complete with your till receipt and original list, then delivered to your home where on receipt you pay the cost of your shopping, plus a small delivery charge of £3 in either cash or cheque.
2 Food Train EXTRA
Food Train EXTRA is a home support service that members have access to. Small household tasks are undertaken via local volunteers – such as cleaning inside of windows, fridge cleaning, light bulb changing. On registering for the service we will offer basic home safety and security advice and will arrange a visit from the Fire Safety/Community Police Officers should you wish. Each task will have a minimal charge – usually £3 but this can be lower or higher depending on the length and difficulty of the task.
3 Food Train Outreach Library Service
Recently launched in partnership with West Lothian Council Library Services, we offer an outreach library service to those unable to visit their local library due to frailty or disability. Although not a befriending service, it does offer the opportunity for social contact with our friendly volunteers.

OUR VOLUNTEERS Volunteers are vital to the success of Food Train, and without them we simply wouldn’t be able to operate. Anyone over the age of 16 can volunteer, subject to a “Protection of Vulnerable Group” check. The great thing about Food Train is that because of the diverse roles we offer, volunteering with us can be flexible. If you want to make a difference to older peoples lives then why not come and join us! You could be a shopper, driver or a helper with our delivery service or an Extra volunteer. We also offer library volunteering. Food Train offers a supportive environment for people to volunteer whatever their reason for volunteering, so if you are trying to get back to work or have additional support needs, then we might be the right place for you! Volunteering is good for you too! It can make you feel good by giving your time to help others. It can be a very social activity and help you meet new friends. Volunteering can also be good for those wanting to fill a gap in their CV, whilst developing new skills at the same time. All our volunteers have access to training, disclosure checks and support with personal development. It doesn't matter how little time you have to spare you can do something worthwhile to help older people in West Lothian. Give us a call on 01506 413013 to get involved.
Food Train customers say... “I certainly wouldn’t be eating as much, as I cannot carry heavy shopping: it has been a godsend to me” “I find your staff excellent: I have much more independence because of your service”. “I can stay in my own home, don’t know what I would have done without it for my shopping, god bless”.
Food Train history Food Train began in Dumfries in 1995 following a community survey of older people that found many of them struggling with their weekly grocery shopping. The idea was developed to ease this burden on older people. A partnership of local shops and volunteers formed, and Food Train began making deliveries of fresh groceries to older people in need with the help of local volunteers and shops. Over time and with support from various bodies such as the Scottish Government, Community Food & Health and the Rank Foundations, the Food Train has expanded into other areas including West Lothian, and aims to continue developing across Scotland to bring food access to all of Scotland's older folk. It is a thriving, multi award-winning charity supporting older people in 6 local authority areas.
