THIS ISSUE

I

t’s Marches season! It’s not just Marches day itself of course, but all the events leading up to it too make for a very busy time in Linlithgow. Linlithgow Civic Trust arrange the Perambulation of the Marches first, and they have sent in a piece to explain what it is all about; and there is news from the Deacon’s Court about Linlithgow’s new flag which will be used for the first time this month at the Marches. With the Marches, Torphichen Summer Nights series continuing throughout the summer, Spectacular Jousting at the Palace, and of course the hope of some good weather there is plenty to be doing in and around Linlithgow. We’ve also got a wee peak behind the scenes at what has been going on with the building project at St Peters on the High Street. Once again, thanks for reading Konect and supporting local businesses and organisations.

WHAT’S ON

Perambulation of the Marches WALKING THE BOUNDARY

The evening of Wednesday 13th June will see a few of the guid folk of Linlithgow, and maybe a few visitors too, taking part in the fifth Perambulation of the Marches, organised by Linlithgow Civic Trust. All are invited to this year’s walk round the town’s old boundaries. Four-legged friends are more than welcome! “So what is it all about?” I hear you ask! Linlithgow is one of Scotland’s most ancient Royal Burghs, and a tradition dating back to the 16th century is the annual Riding of the Marches, on the first Tuesday after the second Thursday in June. This involves the inspection of the extremities of the Burgh’s interests, including those at Linlithgow Bridge and at the port of Blackness. The Perambulation of the Marches complements the official Riding of the Marches, giving townsfolk and visitors alike the opportunity to walk the line of a recorded boundary (or ‘march’) of the Royal Burgh – in this case the Parliamentary Boundary as established in 1832. The Perambulation of the Marches is an event open to all. It is of course a walk which can be enjoyed at any time. The walk is 4 miles (6.5 km) long, and passes by seven out of eight march stones (one original and seven replicas, installed in 2014) marking the old boundary. The walk passes many features of historical and/or architectural interest. The Perambulation of the Marches starts at 7pm at March Stone No. 1 in front of St Ninian’s Craigmailen Church in Falkirk Road and proceeds in a clockwise direction round the route. The walk will be led by the John Cunningham, Provost of the Deacons Court, along with flagbearers and halberdiers, and the Town Crier. At each March Stone on the route, a standard is mounted on the stone and a piper plays. The Linlithgow Union Canal Society (LUCS) will be providing refreshments at Linlithgow Canal Centre (payment by voluntary donation) and the Linlithgow Reed Band will be there too to provide some light entertainment. 8 | LINLITHGOW

The Linlithgow and Linlithgow Bridge Gala Queen Ruby and her Chief Lady in Waiting Emma will be present to welcome the participants in Rosemount Park.

Linlithgow & Linlithgow Bridge Community Council has produced an excellent, detailed booklet on the route of the Perambulation, and free copies will be distributed at the start of the walk. In the meantime, copies can also be obtained at the Burgh Halls, the public library, Far from the Madding Crowd, the Palace, the LUCS Canal tearoom, and elsewhere in the town.

They say that there is no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing, so participants should come dressed for the prevailing weather. They should also take great care at all road crossings. Road traffic will be moving as normal. Please co-operate fully with the volunteer stewards who will be on hand to assist at key locations. Participants should also be aware that there are steps in two locations, one set particularly steep. At the end, certificates will be issued to those who have completed the entire walk. This will be done in Code (the back function room) at the West Port Hotel, while stocks last, and where well-earned refreshments can also be purchased.

Anyone interested in the other activities of Linlithgow Civic Trust should visit their website at www.lbt.scot/civic-trust. This part of the feature was contributed by Allan M Robertson, Linlithgow Civic Trust

...and a new flag for the town

Like the Perambulation of the Marches the week before, and the two Deacons Nights, the Riding of the Marches on Tuesday 19th June will be led by the Flag Bearers. But this year there will be an additional flag. Last year, the Lord Lyon King of Arms presented the Royal Burgh of Linlithgow with a town Coat of Arms as a result of an initiative raised by the Linlithgow and Linlithgow Bridge Community Council. The Coat of Arms depicts the town’s Saint, St Michael, holding a shield of the town emblem, the Black Bitch with the message ”St. Michael is kinde to straingers”. Jim Carlin was Provost of the Deacons Court at the time of the presentation ceremony, which was held in Linlithgow Burgh Halls. After consultation with the Bailies, it took little convincing for the Court to agree to mark this historic award by commissioning a new flag.

Similar to how the Coat of Arms is for the town, this flag is also for the town and is a gift from the Deacons Court to the people of Linlithgow. It will now take its place beside the other three flags to be used at civic functions, the Perambulation of the Marches, Deacons Nights and future Riding of the Town’s Marches. “I am very excited at the prospect of seeing the new flag in all its glory come along the high street on the Deacons Nights and Marches Day. I am very proud that in my first year as the Provost, Linlithgow will see its new flag in use,” says Provost John Cunningham The flag will be presented to the town at the Eve of the Marches Dance which is held in the Marquee annually, with the first opportunity to see the new flag at the first Deacons Night held on Saturday 9th June leaving the West Port at 6pm. This part of the feature was contributed by the Deacon’s Court which commissioned the new flag and is a gift to the local community. eld in the Marquee annually, with the first opportunity to see the new flag at the first Deacons Night held on Saturday 9th June leaving the West Port at 6pm. Long live the Marches

The annual Riding of Linlithgow Marches will take place on Tuesday, 19th June. The flutes and drums kick start the day at 5am from the West Port before the 11am Procession sets off from the Cross to the Brig and back again. The day ends with the 5pm procession going three times around the Cross Well before the traditional declaration of “Safe oot, Safe in!” ending another Marches Day. LONG LIVE THE MARCHES!

GARDENING PROJECT For speed you could just add a great dollop of Crème Fraiche and a good splash of Balsamic Vinegar. Oh the joys of summer!

New World Minted Strawberries A favourite recipe from our Potager to Plate leaflet No.1 is for New World Minted Strawberries. Our leaflets recommend what you should plant each month and then have recipes for the produce that your garden could be producing that month. Halve 500g of strawberries into a bowl and sprinkle over 1 tbsp castor sugar and a handful of finely chopped mint leaves. Leave for 30 minutes. 10 minutes before serving pour over Âź bottle of New World Red Wine (use the cheaper ones!). Enjoy!

WHAT’S ON

SPECTACULAR JOUSTING Horses, knights and lances are at the ready as Spectacular Jousting returns to Linlithgow Palace on 30th June and 1st July.

Cases of ‘Knight Fever’ are predicted, and what better treatment for those with the History Bug than a dose of medieval family fun and excitement. One of the biggest and most popular events of year hosted by Historic Environment Scotland; visitors to Spectacular Jousting can come and cheer on their champion and get lost in the full experience of medieval life for the day.

Visitors can also meet the knights, try their hand at hobby horse jousting and wander through their camps on Linlithgow’s Peel to learn about medieval life from the knights and their aides. There will also be opportunities to learn about medieval hunting with the court falconer, witness impressive medieval archery and see what jovial tricks the Court Jester is getting up to. The main jousts will take place at 1.30pm and 3.15pm, but with activities taking place and living history camps taking to walk through from 12.30pm, visitors are encouraged to come along early and enjoy the full day experience. Linlithgow Palace itself will also be open, so visitors can step inside and explore the ruins of Mary Queen of Scots birthplace.

Spectacular Jousting takes place at Linlithgow Palace on Saturday 30th June and Sunday 1st July, 12.30pm to 4.30pm each day. The event is free for Historic Scotland members, and tickets are available now at www.getthebug.scot/jousting

VET’S TIP

BUSTER THE DOG

KENNEL COUGH Last month, with the holiday season coming up, we looked at preparing your dog or cat for kennels. This month I’m talking about a condition which is associated with holiday accommodation for your dog – kennel cough! Of course, kennel cough isn’t restricted to boarding kennels; it’s so named because it’s airborne and very contagious so spreads quickly in places where there are lots of animals together – such as kennels, but also when dogs greet each other in parks or share drinking bowls. And talking of the clue being in the name, the prime symptom of kennel cough is a cough, a rather nasty sounding one which can sound as if the dog has something blocking its throat. Usually that’s the only symptom although some dogs can get a runny nose, eye discharge or sneezing. Most of the time, it’s not dangerous but it can be lead to more serious conditions such as pneumonia in puppies, older dogs or those already unwell and with a weak immune system so do seek advice from your vet. Usually, however, the cough will clear up within three weeks, although it can be as long as six – there are different strains of the cough just as there are with the cold in humans. And while your dog is coughing, keep him or her away from other dogs to prevent it spreading.

PROPERTY MATTERS

Accompanied Viewings Highly Preferable It is incredible that so few agents regularly accompany buyers around a property, leaving it to the seller to do all the work! Not only is this poor service but accompanied viewings from a well-trained sales negotiator have a greater chance of success, for the following reasons. 1. The heart. The buyer’s initial objective is simply to get a feel for the property, asking themselves “could we be happy here?” In order to buy the property, they need to fall in love with it. During a first viewing, the last thing the heart needs is the seller highlighting small details that are not relevant and can be very distracting. The buyers might also be also keen to discuss their heartfelt plans for the property, which is embarrassing and difficult within earshot of the seller. Also the last thing the heart wants is a pushy seller trying to force a sale, just because the seller is so keen to sell. 2. The brain. The brain really kicks in on the second viewing. The heart has already booked a removal company following the first viewing, but the brain says “hey, not so fast - we need to see the property again - just to be sure!” So on the second viewing, the buyer is looking for reasons NOT to buy the property. Those small details that were irrelevant on the first viewing now become useful - unless they were unnecessarily “spent” on the first viewing. Also, the agent who accompanies the first viewing will have listened out for buying 20 | LINLITHGOW

signals and objections that the seller might have missed, and which can be harnessed during the second viewing.

3. Understanding/empathy. A good negotiator will build a relationship with the buyer, understanding their needs, preferences, hopes, aspirations and potential areas of compromise. Armed with this knowledge the agent will not just “show” the property, but “explore” it enthusiastically, whilst demonstrating how it could fit with the buyer’s lifestyle in the context of other properties the agent is also showing them. The seller on the other hand, has little or no understanding of the buyer and generally, will only show buyers to each room.

There are also occasions when it is important for buyers to meet the property owner and an experienced agent will recognise this and coordinate it with both parties or even facilitate a meeting but anyone thinking about selling their property should consider the benefits of professionally accompanied viewings as part of their sales campaign. The monthly Property Matters column is contributed by Craig Turpie. Craig is a director at Turpie & Co Estate Agents and Letting Agents with extensive knowledge of the West Lothian Property Market and over 20 years experience in bespoke sales and marketing.

HEALTH & BEAUTY

Weight Loss tip #5: Kick the Sugar Habit Sugar makes you fat. There’s no doubt about it. If you stop eating sugar you will stop gaining weight. The only problem is – sugar is highly addictive – and it’s in everything. Two hundred years ago, sugar was rare and outrageously expensive. Fast forward 100 years and Cadbury is on the scene with its Dairy Milk chocolate bar, Coca Cola and Pepsi are being made in the sheds of their inventors, not many people are overweight, there is no such thing as heart disease, no one is selling gym memberships and there is little interest in diets. Enter the 1960s – sugar is everywhere. Coke and Pepsi are goliaths of the food industry, fruit juice and various concoctions of breakfast cereal are widely available and heart disease is endemic. We were encouraged to avoid fat and start jogging. But Type 2 diabetes is now a major illness and our health system is struggling to cope with weight related diseases. But you’re not addicted, you could quit. Or could you? My guess is, it won’t be easy – Big Sugar is powerful – and it doesn’t want you slim. I do, let’s chat. When we come across people - socially or at work - who seem egocentric, judgmental or unfeeling, it can be tempting to be equally harsh in our judgment of them.

We might pause to consider that these people are formed by their years of life thus far - just as we are. Perhaps they’ve never grown beyond the shallow world view which believes it’s satisfying to be ‘better’ than others. They probably completely believe in the ‘rightness’ of their own opinion. This is the domain of the ego and its striking features are lack of humility and an absence of gentleness to be able to truly feel for others. In times when life feels difficult, one positive outcome might be that we can be shaped by our vulnerability in a way which increases our compassion for others. And of course, whilst we would never wish our times of suffering to last any longer than it seems they must, they can surely lead to a stretched heart with more awareness of how very much we have to be thankful for. And these people who are painful to be around? Well, perhaps we can be true to ourselves and simply notice the sadness we feel around them. We might even try to be kind. And if that makes no difference? Well, where possible, we can just walk right around them and leave them to the battleground of their own egos.

24 | LINLITHGOW

Method:

1. Heat the oil in a large deep frying pan over a medium heat and fry the shallots for 5 minutes until golden. Stir in the Thai green curry paste and cook for 1 minute. 2. Add the potatoes, carrot, coconut milk, stock and soy sauce. Simmer for 10-15 minutes until the vegetables are almost tender. 3. Add the chunks of cod and asparagus tips to the pan. Cover and simmer gently for a further 6-8 minutes until the fish is just cooked and beginning to flake. 4. Gently stir in the lime juice, tiger prawns and chopped coriander. Simmer for 5 minutes until the prawns are piping hot, then season to taste with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Serve in warmed bowls garnished with chopped chilli and coriander leaves. Serve with boiled noodles or steamed Thai jasmine rice.

Serves 4 Ready in 50 minutes Tip:

Brands of Thai green curry paste can vary in spiciness so check on the jar before adding. If you want a really fiery flavour, fry 1 chopped small red chilli pepper with the shallots. @KonectDirectory

Refres hm availab ents le St Pete from r’s on Marche s Day!

What’s been happening behind the scenes at St Peter’s?

A complex and challenging building project is nearing completion at St Peter’s on Linlithgow High Street. The historic building, nestled with a very narrow frontage between its neighbours, has been significantly enlarged in size although you can’t tell from the front.

The extension provides excellent new facilities for the congregation and also for the wider community. “All materials had to be taken in and out of the narrow pend and much of the work had to be done by wheelbarrow. We had to get listed building consent in addition to regular planning consent to ensure the design of the extension is sympathetic to the existing building”, says Anne Moir, chairperson for the extension project. The existing building was completed at the end of May 1928, exactly 90 years ago. What’s New?

The new facilities have disabled access with lift and toilets, a lounge area and small community room. In addition, there is a fully fitted kitchen and patio doors leading to a garden terrace. Community Use

The new facilities are available for small recitals, art exhibitions, yoga or exercise classes, art/craft classes, workshops, mother and toddler groups etc. They intend to make the space available to a singing group for those with dementia. On Saturday 23rd June, Far From the Madding Crowd is hosting an event at St Peter’s, using the new facilities. Richard Holloway will be reading from his new book ‘Waiting for the Last

Bus’, from 3-4pm. The session with be chaired by Bruce Jamieson. Tickets are for sale at Far from the Madding Crowd, 20 High Street, Linlithgow, tel: 01506 845509 St Peter’s in the Community

St Peter’s is a Fair Trade congregation and plays an active role in Linlithgow’s Fair Trade activities. In addition, the church is involved in Linlithgow Young People’s Project (www.lypp.org.uk) and the Caring Cafe for dementia sufferers. (www.linlithgowlink.org. uk/content/caring-cafe). It has been used as a venue for the Linlithgow Folk Festival and even as an Edinburgh Festival Fringe venue. A singing group regularly used the church. The byzantine style of the church complete with dome provides very good acoustics! It has also been used as a meeting place for substance abuse help groups. The church is involved in fund raising for various charities and is involved in many community events - streets fairs, advent fair, and refreshments on Marches Day.

VISIT WEST LOTHIAN

Outdoor Events in West Lothian The month of June is upon us, there is an abundance of outdoor activities and days out to enjoy, and a lot on offer to celebrate the history and heritage of West Lothian! The Bathgate Procession and John Newland Festival take place on the 2nd in remembrance of John Newland’s contribution to the building of Bathgate Academy. The day’s activities include a historical pageant commemorating the marriage of Princess Marjory to Walter, Lord High Steward of Scotland. This is a fantastic historic event! On the 19th the hugely popular Linlithgow Marches take place across Linlithgow High Street. This historic event has taken place for many hundreds of years and is celebrated with the whole community coming together to celebrate the town of Linlithgow with pride and passion. A procession of drummers and pipers lead the citizens from 11am from Linlithgow Bridge into Blackness and is concluded in the evening with a sing along of Auld Lang Syne on the steps of the Burgh Halls. Spectacular Jousting also begins on the 30th at Linlithgow Palace and runs into the first day of July. Hear the thunder of hooves and the crack of lances splintering as out brave knights stage an unforgettable display of horsemanship and skill. Running from 12:30pm to 4:30pm, this is a wonderful family friendly event in a beautiful setting. For more adventurous days out, Jupiter Artland which reopened last month will be open 7 days a week for the first time and is celebrating its 10 year anniversary by holding a number of events. Five Sisters Zoo also welcomed two new rescue bears last month so why not head along there to catch a glimpse of these beautiful new arrivals? Whatever you decide to get up to in June, we hope you decide to spend it in West Lothian! For more information, or the latest on all the great things to see and do in West Lothian please visit:

MUSIC REVIEW

I know your name is Rita I like Rita Ora. I mean, I don’t dislike Rita Ora. I can take or leave her, you know. Actually, yeah, put something else on. New single “Girls” is celebration of bi-sexuality, with a undertone of deliberate baiting. Fortunately, we are finally approaching a society in which knowledge of the exact percentage that anyone prefer girls to boys or not at all is of less interest than wondering what the band Bare Naked Ladies will do when they hear how much the verses resemble the fast sung sections of their mega hit “One Week”, assuming Gary and Robbie don’t get their first because the opening bars are pretty much “Candy”. A good pop single anyway, even if it sinks two thirds of the way through under the weight of no less than three unnecessary guest rappers. Are there any other kind? Discuss. Free from collaborators talking over her record, Eleanor Friedberger continues moving towards the mainstream after putting sibling band The Fiery Furnaces on hiatus six years ago. New single - or lead track (or not even that, three songs are being promoted simultaneously) “In-between Stars” is a friendly piece of unassuming synth pop. Not unlike the later La Roux sound, there is no intention to shock or even innovate, just to curl the melody around your ears. New album “Rebound” is all songs of similar quality, and the sleeve is great too. Do you want to debate the Childish Gambino aka Donald Glover single “This Is America?”. As a provocative art performance by actor and comedian the video is both stunning and disturbing. As a stand alone recording if anyone wants to listen to it more than once then it must be the end of days. Put something else on. Rita Ora. I like her. The monthly music review is contributed by James Kerr. James presents the Regal Music Club show on Regal Radio (www.regal-radio. net) and is a member of the local band ‘Snakeskin Shoe Review’. 28 | LINLITHGOW
