Hello neighbours There are plenty of opportunities locally to make the most of the summer while it’s still with us ... Karen has found an interesting place for a walk near Bathgate which you can read about in our local walk feature, and several of our local eateries have outdoor seating for making the most of summer evenings. Thanks are due this month to Rev. John Povey of the Kirk of Calder for providing me with his research on the Calders Witches for the local history article. The serene-looking Kirk of Calder pictured on the front cover was the location for trial and sentencing to death of several women accused of witchcraft in Mid Calder in the 1600s. Congratulations to Joyce Milne of Pumpherston who won the crossword prize last month. We have a couple of competitions this month – in our regular

crossword competition you can win a £20 gift voucher for any treatment at Lumiere Health and Beauty in East Calder – you might just need some pampering at the end of the holidays. And I’m expecting entries not just from ladies, but plenty of entries from the guys too please who want to gift it to the lady in their life! In addition, Bathgate Music Festival are giving away tickets to one of their shows so turn to page 25 for your chance to win. Thanks for reading the Konect Directory and for supporting local businesses.

The Calders Witches (Taken from a leaflet by Rev John Povey)

C

unnigar Hill, Mid Calder – when Mid Calder was gripped by the witch hunting craze of the 1640s innocent women were dragged up this hill and put to death. At that time the hill was just outside the village boundary. An artificial hill or “tumulus” probably dating from the bronze age, it earned the name of “Witches Knowe.” The violent deaths of these women added to the long and violent history of this particular spot next to the River Almond. Here in Mid Calder, a locally-born minister called John Spottiswood, who later gained prominence as Archbishop of St Andrews, was the minister who first took up witch hunting enthusiastically. He wrote of the winter of 1590 - 91 in Mid Calder, “Most of this winter has been spent in the discovery and examination of witches and sorcerers.” However it wasn’t until over fifty years later that the witch hunt in Mid Calder became much more serious under the leadership of the Reverend Hew Kennedie. He was ordained in 1643 and began his career in Mid Calder with a zealous crusade against witches. In February 1644 a certain Agnes Bischope, submitted to trial and examination, confessed to being a “common charmer and a heinous and notorious witch.” She was therefore condemned to death. Later that year a parishioner from Nether Williamston (Murieston) had to remimburse the Kirk Session for expenses incurred in the trial, imprisonment and execution of his wife for witchcraft.

woman suspected of being a witch would be denounced and brought to trial. If she did not give a voluntary confession, before the trial began she was severely tortured in order to extort proof of guilt. Tortures included the thumb-screw, or keeping the woman from sleeping, or witch-pricking (a man skilled in this art would prick the woman all over her body until he found a “witch-mark” - usually a mole or birthmark - which was insensitive to pain, indicating that the devil had marked her for his own use). When a confession was finally made, the woman had to denounce twelve others, for witches met in covens of thirteen, and so the trials continued. However by the late 17th century torture and witchpricking were finally declared illegal. The best known case of witchcraft in Mid Calder came as late as 1720. People walked out from Edinburgh to witness the affair as it was very unusual after 1700 for there still be be witchcraft trials. The Presbytery of Linlithgow became involved. The Hon. Patrick Sandilands, third son of James, 7th Lord Torphichen, and then a boy of twelve, was said to be bewitched. Declaring that some old women and a man in Calder had bewitched him, he fell down in trances, “from which no horse-whipping could rouse him till he chose his own time to revive,” pronounced prophecies, and was

During these times people in the parish were employed to guard those who were suspected of witchcraft. They kept the women awake by piercing their flesh with pins and needles, and sometimes red hot sharp pointed irons if they refused to confess their guilt. It was believed that as soon as the witch slept the evil spirit left her and went about doing mischief. Friends and neighbours believed that it was a kindness to keep the suspects awake. The normal pattern was that a 1)

said to be the subject of other strange phenomena such as being lifted up into the air “by invisible hands”. Lord Torphichen finally believed him, and many unfortunate local people were arrested and put in prison. The family appealed through the parish minister to the Presbytery, which appointed a delegation to meet in Mid Calder on 14th January 1720 for a day of fasting and prayer. The sermon on the fast day was preached by Rev. John Wilkie, minister in Uphall, and was afterwards published at the request of Lord Torphichen. The text of the sermon was “Submit yourselves therefore to God - resist the devil and he will flee from you.” On the day of the fast, to add to the excitement, a certain “Tincklerian Doctor” left his shop in Edinburgh to make the journey to Mid Calder to exorcise the evil spirits there. He said, “I went to Calder, the 14th day of January 1720, before day-light, being eight miles, in ill weather, fasting, and on foot. I took the sword of the spirit at my breast, and a small wand in my hand, as David did when he went out to fight Goliath; so I went to cast out the devil of my Lord Torphichen’s son. When I went to his house, his servants were eating and drinking, although he had appointed it to be a fast day. I do think they might have fasted until the sermon was over upon such a weighty business; and they offered me some, but I took neither meat nor drink of his. Some think it a fast day when they hear a minister preach

for the payment.” The arrival of the “Tincklerian Doctor” was not expected and the ministers of the Presbytery would have nothing to do with him; so he went to several of the accused to examine them, two of whom confessed their guilt. It seems that by the end of the day, five had confessed to being involved in the affair. Fortunately the time had long since passed since people were executed for sorcery, and as Patrick Sandilands was perfectly recovered, the alleged witches were publicly rebuked in church and allowed to go free. Thus ended the final chapter in the story of the Calder witches.

The Art of Matchmaking

M

any people like to have a go at matchmaking amongst friends and family. To a more or less formalised degree matchmakers have been part of many cultures for centuries. Drawing on a wide social network of friends, colleagues and acquaintances, for many people, is the way to find their partner. But what if you haven’t got that kind of network for whatever reason, or just don’t have the time to sift through endless profiles on an internet dating site? That’s where a Personal Introduction Agency can help. Allure Confidential, recently established locally, aims to offer a totally confidential, discreet and safe matchmaking service to men and women throughout the UK. Allure Confidential directors meet all their clients in person in order to gain an indepth understanding of their needs and to build a profile of them so that they can offer compatible matches. “We treat all our clients as individuals with honesty and integrity. Everyone is special and unique, no matter your age or background. Whether you are at the pinnacle of your career or taking your first steps climbing the ladder, we will tailor our service to meet all your requirements. We appreciate how difficult it is to find that special someone and are completely attuned to our client’s needs - this is crucial to our mutual success. In return, we only ask for your trust to let us do all the work for you.” Both directors are business professionals who have worked for many years within the corporate environment, one in Relationship and Stakeholder Management and the other in Accounting. They have a keen interest in human behaviour and relationships and one has recently achieved her Diploma in Neuro Linguistic Programming techniques. They have gained extensive experience in working with people building trust amongst friends and colleagues, all of this is fortified by a deep knowledge of human relationships.

Thought for the Month By Jackie Whigham

What I have learned I was 21 years old when I saw a beautiful poster in a friend’s house with the word “Freedom” printed at the top. Under that magnificent word was an eagle flying high and freely through the purest blue sky that went on forever. At the bottom of this glorious scene were the words, “If you love something set it free - if it comes back it’s yours – if it doesn’t it never was.”

that you want to control shows how out of control you really are! Inner freedom comes from letting go of everyone and everything and allowing others to be who they are, just as you would want others to allow you to be who you are.

Controlling is fear based under the disguise of “love” and “I know what’s best for you” mantra’s! It can bring out a multitude of unattractive and negative tools within the personality to get its own way.

Recognise that everything in this world is exactly as it is meant to be and is unfolding in a correct, divine order. This awareness helps you to trust and allow which is the opposite of control and fear. Have a great day.

To control people you need to take away their freedom. This is done through judgement, emotional blackmail and the laying of guilt. Recognise the very fact

If there is anything you’d like to ask me or write about you can reach me at jackiewhigham1@aol.com or find me on FB. Have a happy day!

Local Crafters: Paper craft By Karen Murray

P

otter Around opened in Kirknewton in October of last year with the aim of bringing a range of crafts under one roof and showcasing the talents of local crafters, as well as offering classes in a range of different techniques. One of the crafts we wanted to include was the ever-popular art of paper craft. Staff member Irene de Luca has been crafting in all manner of media for over 40 years and is a valued member of the local WRI. She started us off by teaching children to make beautiful Christmas decorations as well as cards. We then learned of the closure of the Paper Mill in Livingston and got in touch with Kim Fairgrieve who worked at the shop for nine years learning all there is to know about the craft of working with paper and card. She set up Kraftz @ Kimz at Veitch’s Garden Centre (East Calder) in order to keep doing what she loved best and was delighted to get the chance to offer evening classes to her customers at Potter Around premises in Kirknewton. Kim produces highly professionally made cards and brings all the tools and necessary equipment to teach anyone to make them. Full of enthusiasm for what she does, the classes are always lively and inspirational. Paper crafting might seem very simple to the uninitiated but a lot of patience is required to master the techniques and Kim knows them all. In a class you will learn everything from stamping to rolling on backgrounds, cutting stencils with Sizzix and Cricut machines to using ribbons and stickers. You will paint and punch, cut and weave and the end results are stunning. It might seem ridiculous to say it but in the world of crafters, the count down to Christmas has begun so Kim is now working on her festive designs! In addition to Irene’s many skills and Kim’s fabulous techniques, you can also learn paper crafting from another former Paper Mill staff member Gill. She has established Perfect Papercrafts in Livingston and makes delightful cards and mini memory books. However Gill was looking for a venue to run her classes sell her products and we were happy to oblige.

Kim Fairgrieve of Kraft @ Kimz

The memory books are perfect for a new baby or a child’s first day at school. The work is intricate and detailed and you can simply order the style you want that will be individually tailored to your needs. If you want to be more creative, Gill will show you how you can make your very own. West Lothian is a very creative place and the more you look, the more wonderfully creative people you find. Handmade gifts are very sought after these days so it is perfect that there are talented people who can make them or teach you how to make them yourself. Join a class, meet the paper crafters or buy a gift at Potter Around, Overton Farm, Kirknewton, West Lothian. See www.potteraround.co.uk As the word paper der the name of the materives from papyrus, from beaten reeds in ial manufactured surprise that the craftancient Egypt, it is no paper has a long and of making things in are of course many foresteemed history. Old Photographs

Family history column by Maureen McIntyre

M

ost families will have many old photographs lying around their homes and they can be a huge help in putting not only faces to the names in our trees but they can give us clues about occupations and places where our ancestors lived. Unfortunately many of these photographs will have no details of who is in the photograph or where the photograph was taken - I have many such photographs in my home but have been able to use clues to work out who is in the pictures and where they were taken. It is important to look at every corner of the photograph looking for clues and to speak to other members of the family.

John Ross, the elusive sibling, was one of her younger brothers and he was born in 1898 in Beauly and the family had believed he went to South America to work. My father remembered seeing a photograph of him working at a mine, but he was unsure where this was. So I had two clues mining and South America. Looking closely at the top left hand side of the photograph there appears to be something written. Blowing up the photograph reveals PIOCA Further research revealed that Pioca is a small mining town in Bolivia, South America; it was looking more likely that this was indeed a picture of John Ross. There is little written about this small town which is high in the Bolivian mountains, but it would appear that even today many of the miners employed in Bolivia still live in tents within camps close to the site of the mines. So all this information leads me to believe that this photograph is indeed of the lost sibling John Ross and I can now I use the town of PIOCA as a starting point in my research when trying to trying to find out more about him.

This photograph came to me from cousins in Canada but they were sure it had originally come from the Ross family who lived in Beauly, Scotland. My cousins in Canada are all from the Ross branch of my tree and the family resemblance told me that this man was definitely a ‘Ross’. Was he on holiday at a campsite? Where and when had the photograph been taken? I have managed to trace all but one of the 10 siblings of my grandmother Mary Ross.

Genealogy is fast becoming one of the most popular hobbies in the country with people becoming addicted to finding out all they can about their ancestors. Searching through family papers and the birth, marriage and death records will enable most researchers to build a reasonable family tree, but there are many obstacles in the way to even this basic search. Overcoming these obstacles comes with experience so those starting out on this journey should not be put off at the first hurdle. I have just finished 3 years of study at the University of Strathclyde in Genealogy, so if you are just starting your tree or if you are having problems with any of your branches please email me and I will endeavour to help. Charity Bike Ride Gary Paterson

L

ocal resident Gary Paterson is about to set off on a huge charity cycle trek around Europe to raise funds for three charities in Tanzania as well as the Edinburgh Cyrenians. He aims to raise over £10,000. “I’ve just turned 33 and have spent most of my life around Edinburgh and West Lothian. As a child I lived in Kirknewton and went to Kirknewton Primary School and then moved to East Calder and finished secondary school at Balerno High School. Currently I live in East Calder until I leave on my trek on 10th August.

O’Groats, Orkney and Shetland. From Shetland I’ll fly to Bergen in Norway. The end of the trek will be Amsterdam, getting a ferry to Newcastle and cycling back to Edinburgh. My aim is to cycle 50 to 60 miles a day and I’ll be camping as I go as I don’t have funds to stay in hotels for six months. This is a huge trek covering over 20 countries.

I worked in Tanzania from 2008 - 2010 in Mwanza, the second biggest city. Tanzania is one of the world’s poorest countries. Behind the tourist images of the Serengti, Zanzibar and Mount Kilimanjaro lies a country where most of the Tanzanians are impoverished. During my time there I saw the difficulties that the less fortunate local people have to suffer on a daily basis. It made me realise how lucky we are in Europe just to have a loving family, hot food and a bed at night. From this experience I’ve decided to raise money for three charities in Tanzania that help all age ranges of local people. These are: An orphanage/baby home, see www.foreverangels.org A street children centre, see www.chekasanachildrenstrust.com A dental and development charity, see www.bridge2aid.org I’ve visited these charities in Tanzania personally and seen the good work they do in helping people live with hope, dignity and a chance of a better future. They are all UK registered charities. I also wanted to help a local charity, The Cyrenians. Cyrenians Farm, just outside Kirknewton, is a community enterprise which helps young vulnerable people become more confident and self reliant, see www.cyreniansfarm.org.uk I’ll be starting my trek from Edinburgh city centre on Wednesday 10th August and cycling to St Andrews the first day. During the Scotland stage I’ll also be going to John

26

A big thank you is due to Cotswald in Livingston, who have been great in helping me get the right camping and outdoor equipment and have given me a good discount on my equipment as this is a charity trek.” Gary has set up a website, www.cycle4africa.co.uk. Please visit this site for more information on the charities and to support him by visiting his Just Giving page which is linked from the website. He’ll be keeping a blog and posting photos as he goes. Every donation from Konect readers will make a difference and be most appreciated by Gary and the charities he is supporting. A ramble among the rocks By Karen Murray

I

t never ceases to amaze me how much you find out about where you live when you go looking for somewhere different to take a walk. West Lothian is full of interesting discoveries - both historical and geological. Chatting to a friend who works for the Geological Survey I heard about the Petershill Wildlife Reserve near Bathgate and decided to take a look. Lying off Drumcross Road around 1km east of Bathgate, the reserve was once a limestone quarry. Quarrying began here around 1768 until two of the workings were converted into drinking water reservoirs in 1886 and 1905. However the reservoirs were redundant by 1981 and were drained in 1986. The 5.4 hectare site was first notified as a part of a larger Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) in 1976 and was gifted to the Scottish Wildlife Trust as a nature reserve in 1990. By 1999 it was also designated a Regionally Important Geological Site (RIGS). There is a small car park to the southeast of the reserve which is signposted but easy to miss as it is a little overgrown. Park up and head over the stile to follow the footpath around the perimeter of the reserve. It was a beautiful summer day when I visited, but I imagine that it can get pretty wet and slippery, especially if you walk on the rocks. However it is best for both safety and to protect the fragile environment to stay on the footpaths. As you begin walking you can take in all the geological exposure which plunges down to the left, before heading into a more wooded area and then through a rather lovely meadow towards the northern end of the reserve. The path then heads south over a wooden footbridge and veers down towards what was once a lagoon. Unfortunately the lagoon is dry although that maybe changes in winter. The path then heads up a steep hill and along the opposite side of the reservoir with fabulous views toward the Bathgate Hills. It eventually comes out at an opening in the wall and onto

30

Drumcross road where you simply turn left and find your way back to the car park. The geological importance of the site is down to the limestone reef which is full of fossils. The reef was formed over 330 million years ago in shallow sea or lagoon when volcanoes were active and the ash and lava flows built up to eventually form the Bathgate Hills. The fossils that have been found at Petershill include corals and sponges, crinoids (sea lilies) and molluscs - species that all lived in shallow tropical waters during Carbonifereous times. If you have any interest in geology then it’s worth a visit to this interesting site. However, tempting though it is to take a fossil home, you are encouraged to leave any you find just where they are. As for living wildlife, the combination of high humidity and limestone is quite rare so you will find various unusual mosses. Keep an eye out on the higher ground for the gorgeous greater butterfly orchid and many other pretty flowers such as fairy flax and twayblade. If you are more interested in the fauna you can find at Petershill, look out for squirrels, badgers, brown hares, rabbits and roe deer which are regular visitors to the nature reserve along with fifteen species of butterfly and moth and numerous species of birds. Nature reserves are always a great place to take a walk away from it all as you can be close to built up areas but feel miles away. Petershill offers this but is also geologically fascinating. HOW TO FIND THE RESERVE Take the small road on the right signed to Drumcross from the A89 to Bathgate just after the Tesco distribution centre. At a T-junction turn left onto the Drumcross Road and follow this winding road for about a mile until you see the wooden signpost on the right hand side.

Vet’s Tip: Rabbit Care

R

abbits are the third most popular domestic pet in the U.K., and yet are one of the most neglected. It is estimated there are over one million rabbits living as pets in the U.K. and many of these bright, intelligent creatures lives could be greatly improved through just a few changes. Rabbits are highly sociable animals and love to live in pairs, especially a neutered male and female. A single rabbit living alone is easily bored, and has no opportunity of bonding with a partner by mutual grooming or resting side by side – both entirely natural instincts. Rabbits enjoy human company too and can often be more sociable than some cats! My four rabbits are often to be found relaxing on the sofa, stretched out in front of the TV!

Rabbits were never designed to live in a confined space. They need space to run, jump, explore and share companionship with their own kind, so must have accommodation to allow these natural behaviours. They should have space to run around, outside of their living quarters, for a minimum two to three hours a day. A large secure run attached to their hutch is ideal, as this gives the rabbit freedom to exercise when he wants. Hutches should be tall enough so the rabbit can stretch up on its hind legs, and long enough so they can run freely from one end to the other – a minimum guideline is 6ft x 2ft x 2ft with an 8ft run attached. Crushed Raspberry Tart

L

ate summer means fresh raspberries, mushed up with fresh creme fraiche and wrapped in soft flakey pastry.

An incredibly simple yet tasty recipe from www.eatseasonably.co.uk Serves 4 INGREDIENTS • 1 packet of puff pastry • 1 egg, beaten • 200g/ 8oz creme fraiche • 200g/8oz raspberries INSTRUCTIONS Preheat the oven to 180˚C/350˚F/Gas 4. Roll out the pastry on a lightly floured surface and cut out a 20cm (8”) circle. Then, with the remaining pastry cut out 1cm (0.5”) strips to make a boarder around the edge of the tart. Brush the beaten egg around the edge of the tart, roughly 1cm (0.5”) thick, then lay the 1cm (0.5”) strips of pastry on the egg to create an edge to the tart and brush the egg onto this. Put the pastry on to a baking tray & bake for 20 minutes until golden brown, then take out and leave to cool. Spread the crème fraiche over the pastry base. Slightly crush the raspberries with a fork & spoon over the crème fraiche.

Rasberry facts

• Raspberries are members of the rose family. • There are approximately 200 different species of raspberries. While most people are aware of red and black raspberries, they also come in purple and gold. • Raspberries are high vitamin C and naturally have no fat, cholesterol or sodium. They are also a good source of iron and folate • Raspberries only last for two to three days in the fridge. If you want to keep raspberries on hand, freeze them and then allow the fruit to thaw at room temperature when ready to use. When freezing raspberries, you have two options : if you freeze the fruit without sugar, it will keep for about three months. However, if you add sugar and then freeze, it will last in the freezer for a full year. • The minute you pull the fruit from the plant it stops ripening – unripe berries will not ripen once picked!

Edinburgh Ballet Sara Wood

I

n a typical pre-school ballet class at Edinburgh Ballet, a line of girls dressed up as fairies are catching stars ... later they might be collecting shells from the seashore or flying like butterflies. Sara Wood, who runs Edinburgh Ballet, bases her teaching on imagination, role play and story-telling in such a way that the students hardly notice they are learning great technique. “After all, ballet is all about telling a story,” she explains. She takes students from age two and is creative about teaching hand-eye coordination and having fun in the process. She often starts a session by asking them, “What would you like to be today?” Sara has been dancing since she was three years old. She grew up in Edinburgh, spent some time in Kirknewton and is now based in Currie. All the way through high school she had a clear idea of what she wanted to do on leaving school – dance! She went on to study at the Royal Academy of Dance in London, where she graduated with a B.A. Hons degree in the Art and Teaching of Ballet, covering technique, performance, teacher training, costume design, anatomy and physiology, pilates but most importantly - dancing every day! Her first post on leaving the Royal Academy was teaching full time at a ballet school back in Edinburgh.

and teaching ballet – of course – and pilates. It was a professional ballet company within a school children attended for the whole of the school day following a broad curriculum of academic subjects with ballet classes everyday. She worked there for three and a half years, coming away with a lot of ideas. On returning to Edinburgh, she felt that there was a need for a specialised ballet school in the area. Whilst most dance schools offer a range of dance, Edinburgh Ballet, set up in 2008, focusses on ballet only, in particular pure classical ballet. Opening with seven students enrolled, it has gone from strength to strength and now has over seventy students who come from all over Edinburgh. The studio is currently based at Stevenson College. Sara is a Royal Academy of Dance registered teacher, a Licentiate of the Royal Academy of Dance and is qualified to enter students for RAD examinations to grade 8 and beyond. You can contact Edinburgh Ballet on 07723-589-280 info@edinburgh-ballet.co.uk or see the website at www.edinburgh-ballet.co.uk

Seeking a new challenge but still with a focus on dance, she accepted a ballet teaching position in Germany. She spoke very little German when she arrived but was teaching for five hours per day. “It was actually a great experience and way of teaching – very few words, lots of mime!” laughs Sara. She was speaking a lot more German by the time she left though. With this experience under her belt, and after a brief spell in England, Sara headed to the States where she worked for the Northwest Florida Ballet Company, both performing 46
