M ess age f ro m t h e e d ito r ou know summer’s Y approaching when you see the Currie Riding of

the Marches, Balerno Gala preparations and other signs of summer such as the Bloomiehall Park Football Tournament. Our writer Suzanne has been talking to the Balerno Gala Committee this month to find out what motivates them to put in the huge amount of time and effort required every year to run the event. We’re also got contributions this month from the Pentland Triathlon group (see page 62) and Currie Riding of the Marches (see page 16) along with most of the usual regular columns. Our closest Warhammer club and stockist, Potter Around in Kirknewton, is running a competition with a great prize on offer this month, see page 56 for details. We’re launching a Winchburgh/Broxburn/Uphall edition of Konect next month, so if you run a business are and interested in reaching that area, please get in touch with either Jenny or Charlene (contact details below).

Balerno Children ’s

Gala: Pulling togeth er for more than 50 years ! by Suzanne Green

If you and your family have enjoyed the events of the Balerno Children’s Gala (BCG) over the years, you may feel you know it well. But did you know that it was originally a one-day event put on by a local mill owner who wanted to give his employees and their families an enjoyable day out? “The Gala was in existence before the war,” says current BCG President Anna Lisa Wilson. “It stopped during the war years, but was restarted in 1957 through the efforts of Willie Shanks. He had adopted Balerno as his home, and worked hard to build the Gala into a much larger event.” Following in Willie’s footsteps, the BCG committee works hard to keep the Gala tradition going. They plan and put on primary school discos throughout the year, which provide the necessary funds for the May event. “There is plenty of preparation to do,” says Anna Lisa, “but we work together as a team and we have a lot of fun too.”

When Anna Lisa, who is in her second year as President, realised how much time the committee needed to spend together, she introduced more social events. She knew that people would work well together and enjoy it more if there were opportunities to form friendships and experience camaraderie. So every June there is an awards night for the committee, and “daft” awards are handed out. In October there is often bowling or some other activity, and in December the group enjoys a Christmas meal out. “We usually do something together in February too,” says Anna Lisa, “and we can often be found in the Grey Horse having a beer after the discos.” Currently there are 23 people on the BCG Committee, but new people are always welcome.

Anna Lisa Wilson, President of the BCG Committee

Some are on the committee for a year or two and others for considerably longer. Balerno resident Brian Conway has served for 20 years in various capacities, and doesn’t plan to stop any time soon. “He is an absolute star,” Anna Lisa comments. “Because of all his hard work on behalf of the Gala, we nominated him to carry one of the batons at the Commonwealth Games – and he was chosen! We have other members who have also served for a number of years. But anyone interested in joining us will be welcome whether they can do a little or a lot.” Anna Lisa and her team introduced a couple of new events to last year’s Gala. Sitting on bales of hay at the new Beer Tent, dads enjoyed Gala Ale, while mums sipped Pimms. “This was very popular, especially because we were blessed with fantastic weather,” she says. The “Gunge Tank” was also a big hit last year. Head teachers Rehana Shanks (Dean Park Primary School) and Graeme Sives (Balerno High School) waited while votes were counted to see who would be gunged. There were slightly more votes for Graeme, but because it was very close, both head teachers were gunged. This year’s teacher contestants are Pam Watson from the primary school and Simon May from BHS. “Last year was fantastic,” Anna Lisa comments. “So I just hope we can pull it off again.” The first event is the Swimming Gala at the high school on 16 May. The crowning of the Court is the following Saturday, 23 May. This is also the day of the fancy dress competition and when floats are judged and put on parade – there are expected to be 12 this year! Gala Day on 30 May, held at the bottom pitches at Malleny Park, will once again offer food, face painting, stalls and competitions. And of course, there are a number of activities planned throughout the two-week period. Among others, these include a talent show, the Rigg Race (jointly organised by the Gala Committee and Harmeny Athletics), a football tournament, a pet show, dog show and a bike race. “The Balerno Children’s Gala has been a muchloved, community-based event for many years,” says Anna Lisa, “and it’s just brilliant when it all comes together! If you are at all interested in finding out how you can get involved, please come to our AGM and enjoy some cheese and wine. This will be held at the Currie Rugby Club on Wednesday, 17 June at 7.30 pm, and you will be very welcome!”

Currie Riding of the Marches by Ellinore Moug, Chair, Riding of the Marches Committee

This year is the twenty-sixth Riding of the Currie March, which takes place on the first Saturday (2nd) of May. The home of the Common Riding is in the AngloScottish Borders. In this once notoriously lawless area, the boundaries of the various towns and parishes needed to be vigorously defended both against incursions from England and from unruly Scots neighbours. Various border burghs have maintained the tradition of Riding the Marches without a break for several hundred years. Records of the Currie Sports and Fair Days in the early 18th century revealed a tradition on these occasions of “Trooping the Colour” in the sports field which was then situated behind the Old Smiddy. The idea for re-instating the Currie Common Riding came from Russell Thomson in 1988, who persuaded the Community Council to apply to the Lord Lyon King at Arms for the grant of a Coat of Arms and to have the rights to hold a Weekly Market and an Annual Fair (granted in 1705 to Robert Craig of Currie by the Scottish Parliament) assigned to the Community Council Office Bearers. The Currie Fair and Common Good Fund, and the Marches sub-committee are charged with organising the Annual Riding and Currie Fair, and for raising the finance necessary to do so.

The Currie Ensign and Equerry are chosen annually from applicants who are proficient riders to lead the Riding and also to represent Currie at Common Ridings in other Burghs. Our Ensign this year is Melanie Harper, and our Equerry is Pam Oliver, both local lasses. The Riding of the March commences with the ceremony of Sashing the new Ensign and Equerry. Both are also presented with their Medals of Office, then the Chair of the Community Council presents the Currie Banner to the Ensign; charging him or her to “take the flag of Currie, unsullied and unstained, and display it round the bounds of the March and return it to me, here at this place”. The Ensign and Equerry then lead the Riders off on their ride through the Parish, starting at Heriot Watt University (8.45), riding up to the Green at the Weavers pub (10.00) for the sashing ceremony, then up Muirwood Road to Blinkbonny. There is a great view from the Kirkgate (11.00)! The ride then heads out across the Pentland Hills to the boundary with Penicuik where they meet up with riders from the town. They then head back across the hills to Bonaly, stopping for lunch, then back to Currie (Dolphin Road at about 2pm) then calling at HeriotWatt Campus where they are welcomed by the University Principal. ‘Safe oot Safe in ‘ we cry! Come along and watch this amazing spectacle!

village people by Suzanne Green

“I’m passionate about stained glass!” Ratho resident Brenda Binnie delights in creating stained glass artwork, and she’s a talented face painter too. Brenda, who has been a nurse for more than 30 years, is married to Clark and they have three sons: Scott (20), Greg (18) and Jack (12). When a friend asked Brenda Binnie to join her in doing a stained glass art course, she readily agreed. She’d always enjoyed making things – from cardboard dolls’ houses to crafts to sewing machine creations. “I’d gone from one hobby to the next,” says Brenda. “Until the stained glass course. I fell in love with working with glass, and forgot all my previous hobbies! It’s my passion.” It wasn’t long before Brenda needed a workshop. So the Binnies bought a summer house where she could work and keep all of her tools, sheets of glass, copper foil tape, soldering iron and glass grinder. “I spend all my spare time in my workshop, whatever the weather,” says Brenda. In the summer I work with the doors open and in the winter I am nice and toasty with the heater on – it doesn’t matter if it’s snowing outside, I will be there. I don’t really see it as work – it is my way of relaxing. Sometimes I watch telly as I create. And my hubby keeps me supplied with chocolate, tea or a glass of wine.” Brenda taught a few friends her new craft and, after seeing them sell their work via Facebook, she set up her own page. In November 2012 “Busy B Stained Glass” was born. The “B” stands for 18

Brenda Binnie in her workshop Brenda, and she is indeed one busy lady. “I have four jobs,” she tells me. “I am an out-of-hours community nurse and also do resuscitation training for NHS Lothian. And I have been a face painter for 16 years. It’s amazing how often my worlds collide. As a community nurse, I am often in the most amazing houses and sometimes I see beautiful examples of stained glass work.” Perhaps Brenda’s most popular creation is the thistle brooch, which has been ordered by people all over the world. An American club, fans of Diana Gabaldon who wrote the popular Outlander series, ordered 43 thistle brooches. “They had arranged a ‘Meet and Greet’ featuring the author, and wanted to wear the brooches so they would be identifiable as a group,” Brenda explains. “And they presented Diana with one too.” Brenda’s other works include a VW van, a bumblebee, a fairy house and a girl holding a love heart. She rarely uses ready-made patterns, preferring to create her own designs. Brenda comments, “I’m always looking for new ideas. “If I did this as my main job, I’d be afraid it would become a chore. I really love coming home with a new sheet of beautiful glass. The problem is that I can hardly bear to cut it!” Visit Brenda’s Facebook pages: Busy B Stained Glass; and BrendyBop Face Painting/Glitter Tattoos Photos by Suzanne Green

Family Fun by Pat Banfill

It is a bit warmer, lighter and spring is definitely coming! Time to think about having some fun outside with the children. What can you do that will create good memories to look back on in winter, or when the children have grown up? You might be able to remember some fun things you used to do with your parents when you were growing up, or you might have to think up some new ideas. Most children like having the freedom to have physical fun, whether it is on a bouncy castle, or taking part in an activity. Others prefer quieter activities, crafts, games or challenges. Some love to dress up and act out, others prefer to get messy, but all of these will be better for the children if you are enjoying the activity with them and then you will be able to talk about them together to reinforce the memories. You might want to explore local fun activities for example the Family Fun Day on May 4th at Malleny Park, or Balerno Gala, Currie Fair etc. Whatever you decide to do, have a go at making it fun whatever the weather! SPOTLIGHT ON

Currie resident Katherine Emtage uses traditional Scottish tweeds in contemporary and innovative ways to create bags and accessories for men and women. Always making things as a hobby (“even as a child I always made clothes and things for my toys”) she realised around 15 years ago that she didn’t need to be doing the office-based work she was in; she could turn her hobby into a career. And now, based at her studio in Currie, she has recently completed a very special commission: “Before Christmas I was approached by a representative of Judy Murray with a very hush hush proposition: to produce a range of items in an exclusive Harris Tweed, to be sold at Andy Murray’s exclusive hotel in Perthshire, Cromlix. The tweed was designed by Judy to reflect the very British colours of Wimbledon, with a range of items by some of Scotland’s ‘most renowned’ designer makers. My brief was to create an exclusive tea cosy, large cushion cover and small clasp purse. The items showcase the Harris Tweed alongside my own

Katherine in her studio. signature floral cotton linings. They feature the Harris Tweed label to show the cloth was woven in the Outer Hebrides, and their own bespoke label ‘Cromlix Collection by Katherine Emtage.’ Other designers involved in the project include Catherine Aitken who has produced a range of bags for the collection. The whole project was secret until a few weeks ago when the tweed was launched and the full collection is now on sale at Cromlix Hotel in Perthshire.” Katherine emphasises the textural qualities of the tweed by exploring its three-dimensional possibilities, to create pieces of timeless quality with a contemporary edge. Bags are constructed to the highest standard and lined with bespoke hand printed organic cotton/hemp. Evening bags are lined with silk taffeta. She takes her inspiration from Scotland - its heritage, its landscape, its traditional craft industries, and in particular from its textiles.

MONEY MATTERS

Dicing with Death

by Personal Money Management

It is estimated that 40% of all people with mortgages have no life assurance cover. This is not a problem if you are single with no dependants but as soon as a partner and children are involved it becomes a much more serious situation. This is not a problem if you are single with no dependants but as soon as a partner and children are involved it becomes a much more serious situation. Many believe life cover given through work benefits will be enough, but it is rarely sufficient to cover the mortgage never mind replacing a salary and pension for many years. Anyone who is self-employed will have to provide

their own life cover and should seriously consider Critical Illness cover as well. As a basic rule of thumb, a married person should have sufficient cover to replace 15 years of their net salary on top of any mortgage outstanding. Naturally, the actual amount is highly dependent on factors such as number of children, age and other assets. Policies should often be written in trust, if for no reason other than the payout from the policy is generally quicker as confirmation is not required. There is a large and increasingly competitive life assurance market so it makes sense to search the whole of the market for the best deal. By using an Independent Financial Adviser you can be assessed for the appropriate amount of cover, get the best market rate and also have the trust written up correctly. You may be surprised to find how inexpensive life assurance is. As ÂŁ100,000 of cover for a 30 year old non-smoker can cost as little as ÂŁ10 per month, there is little excuse for over looking this essential piece of financial planning to provide security for your family. Marriott Dalmahoy

Local food with a story kitchen herb garden consisting of mainly hardy woody herbs but James is looking to expand it – “It depends how much space I can persuade the gardeners to let me have for my herbs!” he says. A current project is to find a local jam supplier. “The challenge is that we need it in mini jars for breakfast trays, but it’s not economical for small producers to supply in tiny pots. We’re working on a solution and will probably fill them ourselves on site. The important thing is the product itself.”

Marriott Dalmahoy Gin Afternoon Tea

“We live in God’s larder here in Scotland, we don’t need to go elsewhere for food.” So says executive Chef James Thomson of the Marriott Dalmahoy, who believes passionately in sourcing local food. Happily, Marriott central now encourage their regional hotels to source as much food as possible from their local areas. “It’s an exciting challenge to create our menus from local sources.” For James, this means firstly around Edinburgh and West Lothian, then the Central Belt, then the rest of Scotland for anything not available closer home. “I don’t go out of Scotland though; there’s no need, we have such fantastic food right here,” he enthuses. They currently use Scottish beef - from Orkney - but are in the process of sourcing beef from even closer home, from Lord Morton’s own herd grazed on the estate at Dalmahoy. “I always personally visit the farm when sourcing food. We get to speak to the farmers themselves and to see where the animals are grazing.” This is important because as he explains, due to a food labelling loophole, meat labelled as Scottish does not necessarily have to be bred here; it may have been raised elsewhere and imported, and so long as it has spent a minimal time grazing here before going to the abattoir it can be labelled as Scottish. The hotel’s Human Resources Manager, Dara, is a registered apiarist and is in the process of setting up bee hives on the estate. Once fully in production, the hotel will be using the honey (branded “Dalmahoney”) in the kitchen and on guests’ breakfast trays. They expect the first batch within the next couple of years. Also on site is a

EKCO’s top tips for hosting the perfect barbecue As the warmer weather begins to kick in and the nights become longer our thoughts start to turn to entertaining close friends and family. Good conversation, chilled wine and sumptuous barbecued food. So, to put you in the mood and get the juices flowing here are some top tips from EKCO to make your barbecue sizzle.

1

Charcoal or gas – First things first, what type of barbecue should you buy? Charcoal barbecues, the choice of purists, are cheaper and the charcoal permeates every inch of the food to impart that traditional chargrilled flavour. They also tend to take up less space than a gas barbecue so storage in the winter months is easier. On the downside they take a bit more practice when cooking as the heat remains pretty constant so you need make sure you keep turning your food to ensure even cooking throughout. A gas barbecue on the other hand won’t give you that authentic outdoor taste but on the plus side they can be fired up quickly and the temperature is easily controlled.

2

Your outdoor space – A well laid patio area is ideal for entertaining. Plenty of seating around a table to keep the company close together for the witty repartee is a must. When the sun goes down you want to make sure the party continues. By replacing your existing sliding patio doors for

bifold doors you can open them up fully to create one space between your home and your garden. This means that your guests can stay warm and sheltered but still enjoy the outdoors.

3

Theme – You could choose a theme for your barbecue day. How about a Mexican fiesta with sizzling fajitas, jugs of Margaritas or ice cold bottles of beer complete with the obligatory wedges of lime to keep the flies away from your drinks?

4

Food – Mention barbecue and most people will fire up the sausages and burgers. While this is fine you really want to try something different. For a Tex Mex theme you could look at succulent baby back ribs. Or how about brisket beef with a side order of salsa and black bean, corn and tomato salad? There are thousands of recipes online so you’ll never be stuck.

5

Drink – Your choice of drinks is important. There’s nothing like an ice cold beer when it’s hot. Or, a themed drink like a Margarita or Mojito but drinking in the sun can be deadly so make sure you have plenty of soft drinks and jugs of ice cold water on hand. Never encourage anyone to drink alcohol if they’ve made it clear that they’re not in the mood and there are plenty of recipes for soft cocktails available on the web. The golden rule is whatever you are serving, making sure it’s ice cold. An inflatable beer chiller is ideal but if you feel like splashing out you can always buy an electric wine cooler for your kitchen.

by Potter Around

The world of Warhammer may be something you simply don’t understand, but if you have a boy aged 8 to grown up with a propensity for gaming, modelling and general geekiness, you are very likely to be acquainted with this fantasy world. And if you are that said boy, you will be delighted to know that we at Potter Around are approved suppliers of the Warhammer and Warhammer 40K models, paints and accessories. We have a large supply in stock and can order anything in quickly (with no postage costs). We also have a fantastic shed given over to the realm of boys and their models, tables set up with boards for gaming and painting stations. We have a number of models that can be borrowed for playing. Every Saturday 2-4pm the ‘shed’ opens and the world of Warhammer comes to West Lothian. There are a number of lads well versed in the world who can show any ‘newbies’ the ropes – give you tips on painting, explain the rules of the game etc. We are the only venue in West Lothian to both sell models and have a well appointed space in which to play, offering help and advice for those wanting access to this mysterious and fantastic world.

It’s a game of strategy Pop in anytime to check out the stock and come along on a Saturdays to have some fun. There will be painting competitions from time to time so look out for these. All we ask is that you buy your supplies from us. The games we play and the majority of models kept in stock are 40K based but we have Fantasy Models too and well as rule books and complete sets and of course, we can order anything in including all the paints and accessories. Warhammer is a great hobby for a young lad to take up if you are looking for something new to occupy your child as it keeps the brain active, involves a lot of strategy and does not involve a screen of any kind. And if you are more of a modeller than a gamer, you can order tools and paints and model to your heart’s content with plenty space and no worries about making a mess in your parent’s home! Call if you want more details or pop in to check us out. Potter Around, Overton Farm, Kirknewton, West Lothian, EH27 8DD

Enter the draw to win a box of your favourite models (up to value of £22). Simply text or email your name, phone number and answer to 07854 492638 or email editor@ konectdirectory.co.uk with the subject “Warhammer”.

RECIPE & FOOD NOTES

By Anne Pinkerton

Our food shopping has almost lost touch with the seasonal production of the basic ingredients. The supermarkets do remind us - announcing in April that new season Jersey Royals are in store, or that these are the first Scottish strawberries - but otherwise it’s by promotions for “summer sizzles” or “winter comfort food.” Even so these need a little checking by looking out of the window because the weather and day length will often tell you it’s not yet whatever season the marketers hope it is! By May we can buy new season vegetables grown in Britain: finger carrots, peas, spring greens, salad leaves, spinach and asparagus. Food usually tastes better from local growers because it’s harvested when ready and brought to your plate more quickly - not, as with much fruit grown abroad, picked in the anticipation that the long trip to your kitchen will give it time to ripen. Around us in West Lothian there are several suppliers whose whole business is local food. Some deliver boxes of produce, others you buy on site. Some shops for example MacIver at Currie will have marmalade oranges and damsons when the supermarkets do not. On the A71 at Burnwynd the tiny shop sells potatoes and other veg but also duck eggs. On the edge of East Calder the small holding growing leeks, cabbage, neeps and really good potatoes sells their own and other people’s produce. They are open when the huge carrot sign is up beside the road. Grow Wild in Broxburn, The Whole Shebag in West Calder and Fruit n Veg to You in Livingston do veg box deliveries. You receive regular supplies of fresh fruit and veg which change as the growing season progresses. The Cyrenians at their farm and orchard in Humbie Holdings, Kirknewton, grow a wide range of fruit, veg and herbs. They also keep

58

hens and bees and sell lemon curd, jams and chutneys made from farm produce. Some of their production goes to the market in Morningside (every 3rd Saturday in the month, next dates May 16th and June 20th) and they are planning to start a local weekly box scheme. This will be distributed from The Green Room in Kirknewton. See their questionnaire at www.surveymonkey. com/s/3HR7K7B There are hopes that the local community could become more involved in growing fresh foods and that the Cyrenians could become part of a Community Supported Agriculture Farm. “Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) is a partnership between farmers and the local community. Benefits are enjoyed by all sides: farmers for instance can receive a more stable and secure income and closer connection with their community, and consumers can benefit by eating fresh healthy food, feeling more connected to the land where their food is grown and learning new skills.” Over the hills from us at Whitmuir the farm has a restaurant, art gallery and food shop. Children can feed the hens and see the food growing. Plants are for sale and the range of menus in the restaurant prove that ethically sourced food just tastes good! The monthly farmers’ market at Balerno (every 2nd Saturday in the month, next dates are May 9th & June 13th) has bread, cheese, meat, preserves and vegetables all from small local producers. The Saturday farmers’ market under the castle in Edinburgh has a wonderful selection of the best Scottish food, everything grown within 50 miles of us (except the coffee and tea). Shopping like this is a social event; it’s interesting to talk to the people who know all about their produce. They can explain how to get the best from unfamiliar cuts of meat or give recipes for different vegetables. Buying local keeps you in touch with the seasons and helps you be in control of the quality of the food you eat.

Asparagus with new potatoes Best with British asparagus and potatoes 1kg asparagus 1kg small new potatoes (Ayrshire are good) 6 slices Parma or other finely sliced ham 400g unsalted butter melted Lemon juice Method: Wash the asparagus and snap off the tough piece of stem. Keep these for soup. Tie the stems into 6 bundles. Rubber bands are fine for this. Wash the potatoes and scrape if you wish. Put potatoes and tough bits of stalk in a deep pan and cover with water bring to the boil and then stand the asparagus bundles on top. Cover, use foil if the pan is not tall enough, and continue cooking 15 minutes or till asparagus is tender. Remove it and carefully wrap the bundles in the ham. Drain the potatoes (keep the water and stalks for soup) and arrange everything on a serving dish. Pour some of the butter over the vegetables and put the rest in a warm jug with lemon juice. Serve with crusty beard to mop up the juices.

Asparagus with new potatoes If you are feeling grand you can make hollandaise sauce for this in place of the butter sauce. Spring time luxury!

Triathlon

Triathlon is one of the fastest growing sports in the UK today. Whether its because people have been inspired by recent successes of British triathletes or they can see the fitness benefits of multi-sport training, more and more are trying triathlon for themselves.

One of the best ways to get involved is to join a club. Pentland Triathletes are a well-established triathlon club based in Balerno who have recently started a junior section. The emphasis at the club is on getting kids active, learning new skills and having fun. The club has a regular training session at Forrester High School in Edinburgh on Sunday afternoons, with coaching for swimming, biking and running. New members between the ages of 8 and 16 are very welcome. Pentland Triathletes are also running a Kids Splash and Dash event on Sunday 7th June at Forrester High School. This is a fun swimrun event which is a great stepping-stone into triathlon. Children aged from 8 to 16 are invited to come and discover the excitement of a multi-sport event. You can find out more at www.pentlandtriathletes.co.uk or to enter the event go to www.entrycentral.com/ PentlandTriKidsDuathlon.

Participants complete a non-stop swim, bike and run with short transitions between each section to change kit. The swimming stage can be in a swimming pool or in open water and the bike and run sections on or off-road. Duathlon (run-bike-run) and aquathlon (swimrun) events are also common. Triathlon is competed over many distances, from super sprint (400m swim, 10km bike, 2.5km run) all the way to long distance. The most well-known long distance events are Ironman Triathlons where participants swim for 2.4miles, cycle 112miles and finish with a marathon run. Triathlon prides itself on being an inclusive sport. At many events you find top-class athletes completing alongside age group amateurs. At all levels there is opportunity to challenge yourself and achieve. Triathlon is great for kids as it combines three activities that are most likely already part of their lives. As well as the achievement of taking part in events it’s a fantastic way to encourage kids to be active and healthy. You don’t need a lot of equipment to get started, some swimwear, goggles, a bike, helmet and trainers is all it takes.
