ur writer Suzanne has been speaking to some of those involved locally in a community effort recently to help a family struggling with a sick baby, it’s a truly heart-warming story, see her article on pages 8-9. As usual there is plenty going on in the run-up to Christmas, with concerts and fairs including the Balerno Christmas Tree Festival to help you get into the spirit. And in her monthly Thought, Pat Banfil has some suggestions for if Christmas is actually a difficult time of year for you. All our regular columns from our local contributors are here, I hope you enjoy them. We don’t produce a January edition of Konect, so I’d like to wish all our readers and customers a happy and healthy Christmas season and new year. Thanks for reading Konect this year.

Community: What happens when everyone gives what they can Tiggy Brown (left) and two of the renovating team

whenever a possibility arose, it was located too far into Edinburgh. When Poppy was five months old Dalvina started to have concerns about her development. She seemed “floppy” and couldn’t sit up in a car seat. At six and a half months she couldn’t hold her head up. Dalvina knew that something was seriously wrong. After consulting a GP, they ended up at Edinburgh’s Sick Kids Hospital, where Poppy was diagnosed with Vein of Galen Malformation (VGM). This rare condition occurs during pregnancy, resulting in abnormal connections between blood vessels within the brain. Dalvina and Chris were told that London’s Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) was the only facility in the UK where it could be treated.

I

was wondering, “Why don’t we ever hear any good news stories?” And then I heard how our local community, and others in Edinburgh, have been pulling together to help a struggling family in Wester Hailes with a seriously ill baby.

Dalvina and Chris faced big challenges well before their third daughter, Poppy, was born. Baby Lilyanna just didn’t sleep much. And for two and a half years this had a big impact on mum, dad and 10-year-old Hollie. Living in a small two bedroom house, and doing without Dalvina’s income, only added to the stress. And then Poppy arrived. Thankfully, Poppy was a happy baby and a good sleeper. So, when she was quite young, she and Lilyanna went into the same room. Gradually Lilyanna started sleeping at night. And Dalvina began looking for an opportunity to get a bigger house through the local Housing Association. But KONECT BALERNO 8

At about this time a house swap possibility came up. The new accommodation would give the family the space they so badly needed. But how could they even think of moving – which would require work to the new house – with such a sick baby?

“Everyone gave what they could,” she says, “which is the most important aspect of community.”

That’s when the community stepped in! Friends from Holy Trinity Westerhailes; the “Mothers of Preschoolers” (MOPS) group at the church; Lilyanna’s nursery and social media pages joined together to do whatever they could to be supportive. Former IT project manager and Currie resident Tiggy (Caroline) Brown set up a Facebook page in order to coordinate work on the new house. “Everyone gave what they could,” she says, “which is the most important aspect of community.” Four days after Poppy’s diagnosis, a bed became available at GOSH and the family travelled to London. The team there explained that they

Poppy’s family at her 1st birthday

might lose Poppy. Of the 10 cases that present each year one-third are successfully treated; onethird survive but suffer brain damage; and a third do not survive. Their task would be to cut off the blood supply to the aneurysm in Poppy’s brain. The prognosis was not good. But the three-hour operation on baby Poppy was as successful as it could have been. And after four weeks at GOSH, the family returned home. A church friend set up the first of two crowdfunding pages, to help the family with medical, travel and hotel expense. Other members organised four weeks of hot meal deliveries, babysat so that Dalvina and Chris could work on the house, and prayed for Poppy. One couple, from Juniper Green, invited the family to move in with them for several weeks until their house was ready. Tiggy’s team sanded, painted, made curtains and laid laminate. People Dalvina had never met – from Currie, Balerno, Juniper Green, Baberton and beyond – pitched in! Others gave her vouchers for free haircuts or massages. On 5 November Poppy turned one, and a wellwisher from Balerno organised a fantastic birthday party. Two days later, after Dalvina had convinced the house renovation team to take a break, it was back to London for further treatment. Once again the family waited hours and prayed.

The doctors explained Poppy would have an angiogram and they didn’t know what they would find. When news came, it was good: the VGM was reduced in size and fluid was draining normally. Poppy was cured. “I’m still trying to take it in,” Dalvina comments. “They told us she could live normally now.

Poppy in hospital

“It often seems that we just see the badness in the world. But since Poppy became ill we have seen the amazing good in people. Helping us practically, giving us meals, helping with expenses. Parents and working people have given selflessly just so they could see a family happy and settled. It has been an incredible gift and we are very grateful.” Until 21 December a JustGiving page will be open to help Dalvina and Chris with their continuing financial challenges: http://tinyurl.com/zk87rpz Article by Suzanne Green. THOUGHT FOR THE MONTH

F

Coping with Christmas after a Bereavement

or many people, Christmas is not the most ‘wonderful time of the year’. And if you have suffered a bereavement, whether recently or many years ago, it can be one of the hardest times.

In fact, Christmas can fill us with dread, we remember the joys of past Christmasses and wonder how we will get through. You may feel like hiding away, but it is important to remember that the anticipation of Christmas is usually worse than the day itself. To make the season meaningful, here are a few ideas. • Don’t be pressurised into feeling you have to do anything. ‘Should’ and ‘ought’ don’t need to be part of your vocabulary. • Accept offers of help and don’t feel a failure for doing so. • Avoid the shops as much as possible, try shopping online instead.

• On Christmas day itself, take a flask and some sandwiches and go for a walk. Doing something different can reduce the sense of loss. • If you are with family and friends, don’t focus on regrets, share happy memories and stories instead. • If you have young children try to create new happy memories for them , despite your own sadness. • Take time to think what Christmas really means to you, and don’t try to live up to the expectations of media and society. • Above all, be gentle with yourself. Give yourself time and space to grieve and maybe next year you will be able to look back and see that you have moved on. Thought for the Month is contributed by Pat Banfill, Pastoral Assistant, St Mungo’s Church, Balerno & Livingston. www.stmungos.org

Balerno Christmas Tree Festival 2016 Lots to see and do! There really is something special about Christmas preparations. And in Balerno on 10th and 11th December you’ll get that magical pre-Christmas atmosphere in amongst the decorated trees at the Balerno Christmas Tree Festival. This year is the 7th Balerno Christmas Tree Festival and the organisers are expecting over thirty-five trees to bring colour and light to the Ogston and St Joseph’s Halls at Balerno Parish Church and to the Scout Hall. Once again there will be carol singing in Main Street and around the trees, and we hope also a brass band ensemble. The Balerno Christmas Farmers Market is on the Saturday morning. And on the evening of Saturday 10th December, Broxburn and Livingston Brass Band make their seventh annual visit to Balerno Parish Church to give us their Concert for Christmas. The Christmas Tree Festival is part of Balerno Christmas along with the Balerno Christmas Farmers Market on the morning of Saturday 10th. The Concert for Christmas tickets are available from the Balerno Church Office and Balerno Post Office. There is a magic about Christmas and we think that you can capture some of it at Balerno. See you there!

MONEY MATTERS

The Advantages of Pension Freedoms

T

wo years ago the then Chancellor, George Osborn introduced sweeping changes to pensions, generally known as Pension Freedoms.

It is worth noting the main advantages now afforded to personal pensions as they have made a considerable difference to how personal pensions are viewed as savings and retirement products. In brief, they are: • After the age of 55, you can take up to 25% of your total pension value tax free. This can be taken as one lot or in as many “dips” as you like. You do not have to take any income from the remaining 75%. • You can carry on paying into a pension and receive full tax relief even after taking some tax free cash or income (subject to certain rules). • On death, you can pass on your pension to whoever you wish, even multiple people. Should

you die before age 75 they will inherit the pension completely tax free.

• The inherited pension can remain in a pension for life and hence grow tax free. • The inherited pension can in turn be left to someone else. In effect, while there are still assets in the pension, it never dies.

• The pension is always considered outside the estate for the purposes of calculating inheritance tax. Please note, these flexibilities only apply to personal pensions, not defined benefit pensions. Only the most up to date pension plans will facilitate all the flexibility mentioned above, therefore a transfer may be required to facilitate some of these features. Great care should always be taken before making a transfer as sometimes valuable benefits may be lost in transferring out. Always consult an independent financial adviser before considering a pension transfer of any type. The monthly Money Matters column is contributed by Personal Money Management. This month’s piece written by David Henderson BA, DipFA

Local Foodbank puts a Happy Christmas within reach individuals, trusts and local churches, and food is donated by churches, schools and other organisations. Every week volunteers unpack the purchased groceries and donations, and make up the parcels.

When we first set up a Foodbank collection box at the Mill Cafe at St Josephs, I was slightly worried that ‘donor fatigue’ might eventually set in,” says Balerno Parish Church member Lesley Burt. “But there is no sign of this!” The parish church, along with other local churches and organisations,* collects food for the Foodbank at Holy Trinity Westerhailes (HTW). “We have a rota for emptying the box and delivering to Holy Trinity,” says Lesley, “and donations run at approximately 20 carrier bags full per fortnight. We supply a list of suggested basic foodstuffs, including rice, pasta, tinned food, dried milk, porridge, cereals, tea and coffee.” Angie Thomson manages the Foodbank at HTW. She says, “It’s been running since 2011. Before that we had a small emergency food cupboard, which was used for those in the congregation and community who were struggling. But in 2011 the demand for emergency food increased so much that I had to increase the amount I had available and the Foodbank was established.” Initially HTW depended solely on their congregation for food and financial donations for the Foodbank. But Angie very quickly realised they needed support from other organisations. In its first year the Foodbank distributed 211 food parcels to needy families. In 2014 that number was 2,205. Between January and May of this year 713 parcels were distributed. In total 7,040 food parcels were put into the hands of those who needed them between April 2011 and May 2016. That’s equivalent to 34 tons of food! Food for the Foodbank costs between £900 and £1,000 per month. Financial gifts come from KONECT BALERNO 24

“Currently we see 100-200 people per month,” Angie explains. “On Tuesdays people come to collect a parcel that will give them 3+ meals and some essentials. We aim to make the environment friendly and supportive, providing sandwiches, cakes and hot drinks as people arrive.” Trained volunteers help by listening to clients describe the problems they are facing. HTW makes referrals to their in-house counselling service and debt advisers or other local advice agencies. Many single mums and parents struggle to support their families, so the Foodbank supplies nappies, baby milk and other essentials. The many foreigners and refugees in the community receive help in accessing English language courses. “With Christmas approaching, we aim to “Currently we provide at least selection see 100-200 boxes and other sweets and small gifts for the people per families,” says Angie. month” “Toiletries such as toothpaste, toothbrushes, shower gel and soap are also welcome. “We want to ensure our most needy families have a proper Christmas dinner, and that everyone else has a good meal for Christmas Day.” Contact Angie at : athomson2012@hotmail.co.uk or on 0131 442 3304 (church office). *You may also contribute to the Food Bank through St Mungo’s Church Balerno, Currie Kirk, Currie Kirk Boys Brigade, Nether Currie Primary School and 42nd Pentland Beavers. Auctioneers Talk

Selling at Auction

W

ith global interest in antique auction houses reaching an alltime high, has there ever been a better time to sell at auction?

But what do you know about this fascinating world? And what do you need to know before jumping into it? If you are considering going to an auction house, don’t be daunted or feel out of your depth. Simply follow these insider tips to selling at auction: • The first important step is to obtain as much information as you can on the item you wish to sell. The auction house’s in-house Valuer is likely to be able to assist you with this if you speak with them and either arrange to bring items into the auction house or by sending images by email. In some cases, the Valuer may be able to come to your house in order to provide this service. • The normal rate of commission for selling at auction is around 15%. Don’t be afraid to ask for a lower rate if you have one or more items that are each valued at £500 or more. An auction house may be prepared to lower the rate of commission rather that watch you take you item elsewhere. • Ensure you ask about any additional charges that you may incur. For example, photography and administrative fees and/or charges for selling live on-line.

KONECT BALERNO 38

• It is useful to ask the Valuer what the rate of commission is for those buying at the auction house. Commission rates can vary greatly, from 15% to 25%, which can influence how much an individual is willing to bid for an item – after all, the less a buyer has to spend on commission, the more they can spend on the item itself. • Last but not least is the standard of the auction house. You should feel satisfied that your item(s) will be looked after by professionals who operate a reputable and friendly auction house. When selling, it is important to familiarise yourself with the Auction House’s terms and conditions. These will be available on the auction house’s website or you can ask for a copy of these when you visit. Next time, I will be focussing on buying, and how to prepare yourself for auction. DECEMBER foodpicks Where to eat and drink next in and around Edinburgh and West Lothian

3. New Opening Drake & Morgan bring us The Refinery this month. Opened on 21st November this bar and restaurant spread over two levels and located on St Andrew Square promises to be THE place to go this Christmas. 4. What to buy for Christmas? Afternoon Tea at Greywalls - at £19.50 it’s great value. Take a walk around the beautiful grounds, and then settle yourself down for what is the biggest afternoon tea we have experienced to date!

4 2

5. Pre-theatre recommendation If you’re taking a family trip to the panto this year, we recommend you make an evening of it and treat yourself to dinner at Frontier authentic American food that won’t break the bank. We recommend the nachos and the meat platter. Have a fabulous foodie Christmas, we’ll see you in the New Year!

1 1. W here to eat this Christmas? Twenty Princes Street have a great menu and direct views of Edinburgh Castle. Steak and seafood are the focus, but it’s the flaming baked Alaska that will steal the show! 2. Where to drink this Christmas? Juniper, located right next door to Twenty Princes Street impressed us this month with a cocktail menu worthy of a Christmas night out. We recommend ‘Strawberries and Steam’ which combines fresh fruity flavours with some dry ice theatrics perfect for getting the party started.

The Cottage Bistro and Wine Bar

H

ello, my name is Ian Henderson, I am the new owner of the Cottage Bistro and Wine Bar in Colinton. I started cooking with my mother when I was 9. I loved to make a clock cake that was in a recipe book given to me for Christmas that year by my grandmother. My dad used to deliver milk for Cockburn farm at Bonaly and on weekends I went with him delivering milk to kitchens in Edinburgh and the east of Scotland, my first introduction to kitchens. At high school my favourite subject was Home Economics - I was the only boy in a class full of girls. My first job was at Maxies Bistro on West Nicholson Street. Whilst working 45+ hours a week at the restaurant I also trained one day a week at Telford College, gaining qualifications in food and hospitality and advanced catering. At age 18, after the passing of my brother Andrew aged 2 due to heart complications, I decided to actually make this my passion. This sent me all over Scotland from the Hilton in Aviemore across to Gleneagles, down to the Roxburghe Hotel, Scotsman Hotel, Carlton Hotel. After working in hotels for over a decade I decided to then venture into the business side of the industry. With the combined knowledge of thee individuals from the industry and the money of a manic millionaire, we designed the kitchen and wrote the menu for Louie Browns in Dalgety Bay, the 3 Bridges in South Queensferry and helped with the Steadings in Kirkcaldy. I then ventured out to the Crafters Barn on the KONECT BALERNO 50

Mound where after an initial successful period it was sold. I then took out the franchise in Sportsters bar on Market Street. before ending up as the head chef at the original Cottage Bistro. I am aware of the history of this building. I’ve given it a complete makeover and the inside is now modern with real wood flooring and tables, keeping with the traditional aspects of a bistro. My vision for the Cottage Bistro is for it to be a relaxed place to come for a bite to eat and a glass of wine; a place that serves the community. This is my first Christmas here in the village, and my festive menu is on the website. We have plans to open a wine bar in the back area with comfortable relaxed seating, and will continue to improve the building. My passion will always be the kitchen. We are always looking for feedback and we do take everything on board. I am going to sleep so late at night and getting up so early in the mornings I am almost passing myself in the hallway! I love the challenge of making this place as successful as Mackenzies was. I have big boots to fill and intend to give it all I have!

The Cottage Bistro is open 10am until 10pm serving tea and coffees in the morning, lunch and dinner along with afternoon tea between 3pm and 5pm. See www.cottagebistro.co.uk

he Dalmahoy Hotel and Country Club is now under local ownership. You may have noticed the Marriott branding has gone; the local management team is still in place and now running it as an independent business. They’ve put together a busy festive programme and are delighted to invite local residents to share the season with them. Here are the highlights: Festive Afternoon Tea

I

Christmas presents for cooks

t’s not difficult to buy presents for people who enjoy food, cooking and anything to do with the pleasure of eating. Very fine chocolate, bottles of wine or special jars of charcuterie; a subscription to one of the many special food clubs which send a packet of cheese, hand-baked cakes or biscuits, cuts of meat, tea, gourmet coffee beans or other delicious seasonal foods every month for as long as your subscription lasts. I have, over the years, been lucky enough to have received all these. I most enjoyed the cheese because I was introduced to new flavours I would otherwise been too hesitant to try and the random choices educated me through the year. Books are a good way of making people take a rest and relax. There are many options for foodies before you resort to a cook book. “Consider the Fork” by Bee Wilson is a history of how we cook and eat. It reads as easily as a novel but is full of stories of how man has tamed fire, used different measuring devices and had fashions in spoons. It explains the link between the style of food eaten and the equipment that has developed to eat and prepare it. Pitfalls of the manners surrounding the use of chopsticks wrongly in Japan and the reasons for labour intensive foods being offered by the rich and powerful inhibiting the development of labour saving gadgets are all explained in a light but thoroughly researched way. The fact that clay pots were invented a thousand years before anybody thought of cooking in them and the KONECT BALERNO 56

difference between a nutmeg and a ginger grater and why are all discussed. At the end of each topic there is a page telling of a special tool. So for “Measure” it’s an egg timer and for “Fire” it’s The Toaster. (At least two of my cook friends will receive this book this year!) “The Belly of Paris” by Emile Zola is full of the most evocative descriptions of food. You can almost taste the summer fruit on the market stall and taste the cheeses in the cellar of the shop keeper. It’s set in the area around the Marche des Innocents as Les Halles, the enormous, busy central market of 19th century Paris is being built. Social disruption and change caused by establishment of the Second Empire and the great modernizing and building projects during the Haussmann era underlie the story of RougonMacquart family. Published in 1873 the petty squabbles and worries of small tradespeople are still relevant to the reader today. Zola pictures a world in which food and the injustices of society are inextricably interlinked.

Lemon Syllabub This is a very old but simple pudding. It could have been made by people in any of the books or films mentioned and it a bit special so good at Christmas time. In the past it was made using sweet wines or sweet sherry, but for today’s taste this would probably be too sweet. Serves 4 INGREDIENTS • • • •

½ pint whipping cream 50g caster sugar 50ml white wine, not too dry Zest and juice of 1 lemon

METHOD Whip the cream and sugar together till soft peaks are formed. With a table spoon gently fold in the wine, zest and lemon juice. Spoon into four pretty glasses. Serve with thin, crisp biscuits. You can put mixed berries or poached fruit under the syllabub for a bigger pudding and serve 6.

Penguin Books have produced a set of 20 special extracts from their food publications. The Great Food Collection includes:- The Art of Syllabub, Love in a Dish, A Middle Eastern Feast, The Art of Carving, The Pleasures of the Table, From Absinthe to Zest and The Elegant Economist. You could indulge in all of them for yourself or give them away one by one to people who might enjoy a short read. However, if you still want to give a friend a cook book the most beautify produced ones I can remember are by Tessa Kiros. 1. “Limoncello and Linen Water” and 2. “Venezia Dreams.” Hard backs with gold edged pages, a velvet ribbon bookmarkers and many sumptuous photos of food intermingled with settings of old Italian china and black and white family photos. The recipes are good too.

Spread from limoncello and linen water
