Feature: Spotlight on Juniper Green The Changing Shape of Juniper Green by Cliff Beevers As a 40+ year resident of Juniper Green I’m a “newcomer” to many old-timers in the village. Over those years there have been changes: development at Baberton Mains, buildings where petrol stations stood on Lanark Road, flats behind Juniper Avenue, and sheltered housing at Baberton Park and St Margaret’s. Juniper Green retains its village friendliness with a church, local watering holes, the nucleus of a high street, golf, tennis and bowling clubs, a village hall and a popular primary school. We have in recent years lost our Post Office, butcher and paper shops, as times and habits change. But we've gained a couple of takeaways, two excellent eating venues and a monthly Farmers Market. Hairdressing has replaced
food stores, and the beauty parlour, IT shop and physiotherapy practice are excellent amenities.
The monument on Belmont Road
The story of Juniper Green’s past was recorded in 2007 so please look at www.junipergreencc.org. uk/jg300 for details. Since 2010 the monument beside the tennis courts has been a reminder of our past as a mill village, with echoes back to Bronze Age times. Bloomiehall Park had its centenary in 2012 and we hope we can hang on to our other green space at Curriemuirend Park despite the threat hanging over its future. The village is about to welcome more newcomers soon, with residents moving into the old primary school building and the McCarthy/Stone complex on the
Baberton Golf Club site. As one old “newcomer”, I offer a hearty welcome to the new incomers to the village.
A Monthly Treat - Juniper Green Farmers' Market by Richard Watt It seems extraordinary that Juniper Green farmers’ market, or community market as it is also known, has existed on the fourth Saturday of the month since the autumn of 2010. Starting in the Kinleith Arms car park, now in the dental surgery car park, it may soon move to a more central location, with the possibility of taking it indoors to the village hall in winter weather.
(top) Stallholders at Juniper Green (bottom) And the Winner of a £20 Meat Voucher is ...
8 konect
We've seen stalls come and go since 2010, but the two constant stalwarts are the Cedar Cottage meat and vegetable stall, selling flavoursome Highland beef and delicious sausages and pies, and Störtebäker, whose wonderful home baked German cakes and savouries, from streusels to fruity cheesecakes or tasty breads, have a strongly loyal following unable to resist a monthly treat.
Highland cattle grow slowly, which makes their meat a little more expensive than that of modern breeds, but also gives it a superior flavour. As with quality everywhere, you can pay a bit more at the market, but to treat yourself to the best just once a month has got to be life-enhancing. It’s worth coming along for the unexpected too: in March you could have tried Kenyan and Caribbean flavours, bought herbs for the garden and handmade chocolates for selfindulgence. The market is a great social event, a place to meet friends, exchange gossip or meet your city councillor and tell him about potholes and pavements, or just enjoy music from the resident band.
The Week at Juniper Green Primary School in 60 Seconds Each week in Assembly, two children from Press Gang go against the giant egg timer to give a summary of the news from around the school in under 60 seconds. It can be quite a challenge in a busy week to choose just one or two main things from each year group. To read more of these please see the ‘School Life’ section of our website: www.junipergreen.edin.sch.uk The Week in 60 seconds (presented Friday 4th April 2014):
• P1 have been learning about Easter and about even and odd numbers. • P2 had an exciting fashion show and showed off their creations to their families and other people by parading along the catwalk. • P3 have been making palm leaves and learning how to make balanced meals. • P4 have been learning more football skills and are sad that it was their last week with the football coaches. • P5 have been learning in maths about graphs and playing battleships. • P6 have been using computers to program lego structures
and are also finishing off their Inspire-Aspire posters about someone who has inspired them and what qualities they aspire to having themselves. • P7 have been learning about renewable energy and preparing for school camp after the holidays • P5, 6 & 7 have been finishing off their creative dances and performed them in front of their parents. The school choir, cellos and brass instrumentalists also contributed to the fantastic show. And that was the week at Juniper Green in 60 seconds!
Baberton Mains History Project by Helen Ogg Has Baberton Mains got a history? “It’s just a Wimpey estate”, I hear you say. Well, a group of local enthusiasts, under the auspices of Juniper Green Community Council, decided it was worth completing the history of the area, particularly the social history of the estate over the past 40 years. Baberton was started in 1972 and finished in 1977. We have researched as much as we can about the area, back to Roman times, finding out that most of Baberton Mains is built on the old farm of Fernieflat, with only a small part from the Baberton lands. We delved into old maps; newspaper accounts of lively
activities at Baberton House; scoured RCHAMS for old photos, unearthing a photo of the old farmhouse and carthorses from Fernieflat, and we collected reminiscences from people who have lived in Baberton through the years. Their stories bring the estate to life; the opposition to bringing a bus into the History Quilt in the making estate; the small tight-knit communities and life-long the link between old Juniper friendships which were formed in cul-de-sacs and small streets; Green and Baberton Mains. Get in Shape for the Summer Your Local Guide to Health and Fitness The weather is improving, summer holidays booked for the lucky ones who are getting away, layers of thick cover-up clothing coming off...it's a good time to be thinking about getting fit and losing a bit of excess weight. In fact it's always a good time to think about improving fitness, so the Konect team have been speaking to a lot of people involved in the fitness industry locally to pull together some ideas for you. Humans are complicated and there is no such thing as one solution that suits everyone. But we've come up with a variety of options all available in the local area. From gentle walking with a group through to serious fitness training, there is a huge range of activities that you can do in a group or individually, with a personal trainer or in a class setting. Regardless of your current fitness level, age, interests and time you have available, you'll be able to find something to suit you. And while there is no such thing as a “quick fix” to losing weight or increasing fitness, finding a fun way of achieving it by joining a dance or sports group can mean it's not a chore but part of your lifestyle. This is a key approach of Karen Murray of KM Fitness in Juniper Green. Karen is a personal trainer - sometimes you need one-on-one help to achieve your goals. She says, “If you're looking for a trainer who insists you eat nothing but rice cakes and drink only water, then I ain't your gal, but if you want training, nutrition advice and exercise that is fun, and to discover food that as well as tasting great also happens to be healthy, then give me a call!” If you struggle to get started with exercising due to mobility problems or pain issues, massage may be just what you need before you can embrace light
exercise. Regular massage also helps you be more body aware and able to spot niggles before they turn into a problem. Gardenacre Therapy in Balerno supports athletes such as runners and cyclists who are training for races and challenges. Massage can help prevent injury, decrease recovery time and reduce muscle soreness. But you don’t have to be a competing athlete to enjoy these benefits - the same applies to anyone who keeps fit by walking, gardening or dancing. The Clubs and Classes section at the back of Konect each month is always a good source of ideas for joining a fitness class or taking up a new skill that involves physical activity, and the local community high schools (Currie and Balerno) both run community learning programmes which include activities such as Swimfit, circuit training, ballroom dancing, pilates and yoga. Courses tend to run with school term dates, contact Balerno Community Learning on 0131 477 7733 and Currie's on 0131 449 5922 for details. The following are a few fun suggestions to help get you started, but always take the advice of the health and fitness professionals represented in this feature. 1 Fitness is a habit If you approach each task everyday with a view to how it can improve your fitness you'll be amazed at how, for example, not being able to find a parking space near the shop or venue you want becomes a positive thing, not a problem! Yay, I get to walk an extra 250 metres! Might even have to run if I'm a bit late too! Take the stairs not the lift – often repeated but actually true and you'll be surprised how it can change your attitude. 2 Will power is limited ... ....and let's face it, losing weight does require willpower, be it to get to your exercise class or to change your eating habits. So if you're dealing with other stresses in life that are taking up your reserves of selfcontrol and endurance, you'll find it harder to resist over-eating or skipping your class when you're tired.

TNESS SPECIAL * FITNESS SPECIAL * FITNESS SPECIAL * FITNESS SPECIAL * FITNESS SPECIAL * FITNESS SPECIAL * FITNESS S View your fitness time as time-out for you from your other stresses, not just another chore that you have to fit in. And it is easier to resist junk food when you're just back from a work-out and feeling good, rather than at home feeling overwhelmed and consoling yourself with a sweet treat. 3 Morning light helps you lose weight! No this isn't a joke....a recent study shows that people exposed to natural light in the morning are leaner than those exposed to light later in the day. And it has nothing to do with physical activity, calorie intake, age or season! It has to do with body clock and metabolism - as I said above, humans are complicated but if you're looking to lose weight and need all the help you can get, get outside in the natural light in the morning. 4 Calories eaten < calories expended = beach figure If only it were that simple. Cutting calories is an effective way to lose weight, but it has to be done in a sensible and healthy way and ideally in conjunction with regular exercise. You can't go too wrong with eating plenty of fruit and veg (the new recommendation is 7 portions a day) and cutting down on the cakes and biscuits.
Grapefruit juice is a great appetite suppressant – take it like medicine in the morning to stave off the sweet cravings. Use smaller plates/bowls to reduce your serving size, or give yourself a rule of “no seconds.” Be sensible – going without food completely is not a healthy choice, neither is crash dieting! Consulting a nutritionist is well worth it even if you only need to make small changes to your diet as they can devise a diet that is sustainable and enjoyable for you. 5 Getting children involved early in sport sets up good habits for life, and, as for adults, there is something to suit all tastes locally. We hope this feature encourages and inspires you to make some positive changes. There really is something for everyone, so whatever your goals, look through these pages and you will find something to suit you. Even one small change is better than nothing at all. So there is no excuse!
Burn 500 Calories 1 2
Six hours of kissing - bring chapstick! Eating burns 100 calories and hour – eat for 5 hours and burn 500 calories – might be counter-productive though! 3 Do 2 1/4 hours of shopping - as if you needed another reason to shop 4 2 hours 10 minutes of guitar playing (standing) - and you will turn into a rock star 5 Punish a punching bag for 70 minutes - think of someone who annoys you and get swinging 6 Golf for 1 1/2 hours - only counts if you walk and carry your own clubs 7 Play with the kids for 90 minutes - will tire them out and the wee one's will love it 8 Give someone a 2 hour long massage - make sure they return the favour 9 2 hours and 20 minutes of general housework - and your home will be gleaming 10 7.25 hours of laying quiet and still - deserved to make the list just to put things into perspective

Happy Walking by Karen Murray Regular readers of this column will be aware that my walking exploits tend to be dictated by the pathways available en route to a business meeting, or waiting while a child attends some sporting class or another. Where there is a section of pathway that can be walked or run while I am out and about, I try to fit in the time to do it. I do like to venture further afield and enjoy a full day’s walking in the hills but that of course requires planning and often but not always entails going further afield. You might wonder why all the ‘exercise squeezing in’ - is it not too much trouble? Why bother? Well of course the top reason is one of health and well-being. We all know physical activity is good for your body - aiding a healthy heart and supple joints to begin with, however physical activity is also good for mental health and is one of the main reasons I do all the ‘squeezing in’. Regular exercise can boost your self-esteem and help you concentrate, sleep, feel and even look better and it can make you happy! The fact that endorphins are released in your brain when you exercise has got to be a number one reason to do it - we all want to feel happy. So let’s look at a few plus points for regular exercise: • -decreased stress • -increased energy • -improved sleep • -better focus • -sense of achievement • -reduced anger and frustration • -healthy appetite Now to see how and where you can fit in a short walk: There are numerous walking routes all over West Lothian and the surrounds and I just try and factor in a little extra time between appointments or while taxi-ing kids around to make sure I can add in a walk or run.

SPECIAL * FITNESS SPECIAL * FITNESS SPECIAL * FITNESS SPECIAL * FITNESS SPECIAL * FITNESS SPECIAL * FITNESS SPECIA When driving anywhere that takes me past the Lizzie Bryce roundabout in Livingston I pull into the lay-by nearby on the A71 and walk down the steps to walk along the paths of the Calderwood along the Murieston Water.
There are so many other paths from Mid Calder that you stride out along in a lunch hour or between meetings, just as there are paths from the Howden Centre in Livingston, or anywhere along the Water of Leith starting in Balerno, Currie or Juniper Green.
There are then a myriad paths spiralling their way through the woods and you can wander for as long as you have time. To change it up a bit I sometimes park on the other side of the road and head off up to the top of the grassy bing nearer Mid Calder, taking in the view.
The ones I have mentioned are but a few. They are all ones I have walked or run along several times and probably written about in full in this column but there are still many more out there that I have not made time to experience and I am sure many of you will know of others.
If I am driving to Bathgate, I always take the A89 rather than the M8 so that I can take my constitutional in the grounds of the old Bangour Hospital or further along the road in the hidden beauty of the Petershill Wildlife Reserve. Cairnpapple Hill or the old Korean War Memorial the other side of Bathgate are sometimes included if I have more time.
I go for opportunity, grabbing it when I can but I do intend to make more time now the lighter nights are here and pick some more of the scenic routes to try out. There are several Nature Reserves I have not yet visited so they will be on my summer list.
Work in East Calder can include a circuit within the Almondell and Calderwood Park - usually to the Visitor Centre and back or a stroll along the main road to the Oakbank Bowling Club where you can head off road and through the woods to the river, following it along for a short while.
Of course as it is exercise we are discussing, when the weather really is foul or if you have no other option, there is always Mall Walking - which as the name suggests is getting your exercise walking around the shopping centre. And why not I say? The fresh air might the missing but the endorphins will be released nonetheless!

Village people
Cliff Beevers A Vision for the Community, by Suzanne Green “All my life I’ve been fortunate with people,” says Cliff Beevers. “Whether it’s family, colleagues or friends in the community, I’ve always had a great group of people working with me.” I am struck by the gentle spirit and humility of this man, who welcomed me into his home so that I could discover more about his contributions to the study of mathematics, his community work and how he has handled blindness. Cliff left Yorkshire in 1963 to study mathematics at Manchester University, where he met his wife Elizabeth (Liz): “Manchester united,” he jokes. He played rugby from an early age, and recalls, “My eyesight was all right for many years. But gradually it worsened. One day, when I thought there was no one between me and the tri-line, I ran into three opponents!” In 1964 Cliff was diagnosed with retinitis pigmentosa, sometimes called “tunnel vision”, and was registered blind in 1977.
“You won’t remember me, but you taught me calculus.” In 2005 Cliff retired, and since then he has been “reinventing himself” according to Liz. As chairperson of the Juniper Green Community Council, and an elder in the parish church, he has worked hard to serve his community. Perhaps most notable was the year-long celebration of “Juniper Green 300” in 2007. Events included a gala, history talks and ceilidhs. Liz co-wrote the history of the village, and a calendar and historic photographs were produced. Though he may be without sight, Cliff is not without vision. Asked what he would like to see happen in Juniper Green, he replies, “I like to live in a village where people are united. Everyone’s input is important – no one person can do everything. We need to find people’s talents and help them work together to everyone’s benefit.”
“The doctor suggested I quit university and make baskets,” he says. But, thankfully, Cliff did not take that advice. He left university in 1969 with a first class honours degree and a PhD in mathematics. Later that year he joined Heriot-Watt University as a mathematics lecturer. There in the mid 1980s Cliff and a team of colleagues developed CALM (Computer Aided Learning of Mathematics), of particular help to undergraduates studying for science and engineering degrees. Cliff was the architect of the e-assessment policy in the national programme called SCHOLAR which is still delivering Higher and Advanced Higher in STEM, Business and Languages to all Scottish secondary schools. He has accepted his blindness gracefully, aided by practical help from colleagues, the loving support of his wife and daughters, and a succession of guide dogs. I had the pleasure of meeting Danni. Her predecessors were the friendly Kimmy; Tenko (the playboy), whose antics included opening the fridge and eating the chicken and custard; and Foster, who “looked good but may have had a charisma bypass”. Cliff was awarded the OBE in 2003. During the ceremony Prince Charles’ equerry said to Cliff,

Spotlight on
Cleanleeness “Some people think that cleaning is easy. But if you're doing it properly, it's not easy - it's hard work!” Lee Raby runs Cleanleeness, the domestic cleaning company he set up around two years ago. It all started when his gran became sick and he started doing her cleaning for her because she could no longer manage. He got on well and soon started cleaning for other people in his and his family's network. In a very short time, he was enlisting the help of family members and close friends … and employing them in his new cleaning business! He pulled out of the photography course that he had started in order run his business full time, and has never looked back. “I think customers appreciate the fact that we're a family business, and they get the same cleaner each time so they can build up a relationship with them. The cleaner gets to know their particular wants and needs,” he explains. “We're not a faceless agency which sends out a random cleaner each time. Customers have the telephone number of their cleaner, so can contact them directly to make changes or requests.” All the Cleanleeness cleaners so far are from within Lee's circle of close friends and family – in other words, people he knows really well and knows they will do the work to the right standard and put in the extra effort for the sake of the family business. And as his business is growing rapidly from

recommendations and referrals, they must be doing something right. Is he soon going to run out of family and friends to employ? “Yes, I think so!” he laughs. “And when that time comes I'll have to think very carefully about who else I take on.” When you contact Cleanleeness, Lee arranges an initial visit to see what you want done – and to show you the company's appropriate insurance and police check documentation (all staff are police-checked). They have a “set menu” of jobs they will do on a weekly or fortnightly basis, or you can give them a check-list of things you want done. Lee likes to talk through what you need and take note of any special requests. For example, he explains to me that one customer likes them to use a different brand of cleaning product as he is sensitive to the smell of the one they usually use; another customer has a special schedule arranged as he is “de-junking” his house room by room and getting a deep clean in each one. It's a big part of the job satisfaction for Lee to be able to deliver exactly the service required. The bulk of their work though is the regular weekly or fortnightly visits, including dusting all surfaces, cleaning the windows on rotation, vacuuming and mopping, cleaning the bathrooms, kitchen surfaces and cupboard fronts. “We work fast, efficiently … and thoroughly. We don't cut corners. We've had a situation where a customer questioned that we needed 2 hours to do a job that the previous cleaner had done in 1.5 hours – but it became clear very quickly that the previous cleaner had not actually been doing everything properly.”
Cleanleeness is your local domestic cleaning service.
We supply all products, are fully insured and we are not an agency. Cleanleenes provides you with the same vetted cleaner every week. We base the clean around your needs and requirments and will work with you to plan this.
For more information visit: www.cleanleeness.com or contact us at:

info@cleanleeness.com Since starting out Lee has got through various different brands of cleaning products, mops, vacuum cleaners, all to optimise the quality and efficiency of the work they do. (They have settled on Dyson cleaners as being the most effective for carpets). It's not just about turning up and rushing through the job, it's about getting it right in every detail. And the day doesn't end for Lee after the last cleaning job; all the cloths and dusters have to be washed and dried, vacuum cleaners emptied and checked over, paperwork and banking to do.
"It's not just about turning up and rushing through the job, it's about getting it right in every detail." “But I wouldn't have it any other way now,” he says. “I like things to be clean and I get a lot of satisfaction from a job well done.” Call Lee on 0131 564 0515, he will be delighted to help you out.
Testimonials from happy customers "My standard of cleanliness in the apartment is so much better now with Lee and his team doing the work and his attention to detail and his commitment to his role." "Lee was extremely professional and reliable. The business could accommodate various requests regarding both timings and cleaning tasks. There was a good work ethic and would happily recommend them to anyone in the future."

What Do Tarot Readers Do? by Bernie Rowen CG Jung coined the phrase “synchronicity”; this has meant many different things to different people. The actual meaning according to Jung is ‘synchronicities are meaningful coincidence’. When a tarot reader sees a card in a particular placement in a reading s/he would translate the symbolism depicted in the card and put it into the context of the client’s life. When the client draws the cards, contemplating their question, the moment in time that this takes place carries information, as universal consciousness is available to be tapped into. It is understood by academics and mystics alike that the symbolism of tarot has evolved and that it doesn’t have a clear cut history as to how it has come to be the card system that it is today.

Money Matters
Life After Annuities By Personal Money Matters Annuities
Annuities have never attracted as many newspaper headlines as they have recently. First, the review by the industry regulator, the Financial Conduct Authority, reported in Feb 2014 that most people were not getting best value from their incumbent pension provider and would be better off shopping around.
The Good News Budget
Then came Chancellor George Osborne’s new rules threatening the annuity market as he introduced a series of tax changes, effective in 2015-16, increasing access to pension pots which meant that “no one will have to buy an annuity”. Annuity rates have halved in the last 10 years and while historically seen as the main option, providing a steady and reliable income in retirement, the returns are low and a long survival is usually needed in order for retirees to regain their investment.
48 konect
Hence the FCA review, which found 80% of people who bought an annuity would have been better off shopping around and buying one elsewhere. While very wealthy individuals have taken advantage of income drawdown options for years, those in ‘middle earnings’ will likely face the biggestever change to their pension arrangements. They now have more choice. This is only a good thing if you make the right choice – the need for advice is paramount. Whilst buying an annuity is no longer mandatory, they may still be the right choice for some. They exist in many different forms, such as investment-linked, joint life and impaired life or enhanced annuities. Variable (or flexible income) annuities may grow in popularity as savers still want a level of security but don’t want to lock in income levels. It is important to remember that annuities are now just one option and with an increasingly varied landscape to navigate, we urge you to seek out good financial advice. Written by Dr PM Marshall. Thought for the Month By Pat Banfill Eating Disorders, eating too little (anorexia) or eating too much and then making yourself sick (bulimia) Many parents worry about their children’s eating, but have a real concern if they seem to be hardly eating at all and losing weight, or if they make themselves sick after eating. Parents: Can feel torn between providing emotional support and having to supervise diet and mealtimes. You can be on the receiving end of aggressive comments and behaviour, whilst trying to offer love and care. Do try not to focus on eating, but rather try to find out how your child is feeling and coping with life generally. Encourage them to talk, and listen to them. Do help your child to get professional help as early as possible, and be part of this process.
Do get information about eating disorders for yourself. See www.anorexiabulimiacare.co.uk. Dads: Fathers often describe their reaction to the eating disorder as one of incredulity mixed with anger. Finding support from outside the family may help to keep in control at home. Siblings: Can often feel forgotten about. A lot of attention is focussed on the person suffering, and the tense atmosphere at home can create anxiety. Try to find family and friends who can give you time, just for you. It can be a long journey out of an eating disorder, but starting soon is better. Pat Banfill, Pastoral Assistant, St Mungo’s Church, Balerno. www.stmungos.org
You want someone to take the time and listen to you… You want to have choice. You want your teeth to look better. You want pain free dentistry. You want to see the same faces each time you come for routine check. But most of all you want someone you can trust. Let us look after you.
