Untroubled Waters By Emma Merchant
W
atching geese skid-landing on the water’s surface, it is easy to imagine that Harlaw Reservoir is as old as the nearby Pentland Hills. But it is a new-born baby in geological terms. The peaks of the Pentland Hills are made of sandstone 400 million years old and of volcanic rock from the Devonian age. The reservoir is merely one hundred and sixty three years old. Harlaw Reservoir was designed and constructed by an engineer working for the Edinburgh Water Company (EWC). It took five years to build and was completed in 1848. Harlaw Reservoir’s larger sister, Threipmuir Reservoir, was created at the same time. Intended as a source of public water supply for Edinburgh, the reservoirs fulfilled this purpose for many years, but neither does so any more. Instead, nowadays they contain upstream flood water. Together, they help to prevent the Water of Leith bursting its banks. It might seem a fairly simple task to dig a large hole to capture rain and river water. But a ‘pond’ the size of a reservoir needs careful planning and design. The type of rock below, the contours of the hills above, and the natural routes of water flow must all be considered. And, as any small child digging on the beach knows, once a hole fills with water, it is only a matter of time before the sides collapse, unless they are well shored up. Civil engineer, James Jardine (1776 – 1858) was the person entrusted by EWC to build Harlaw Reservoir. He came from a farming family, but while studying at The University of Edinburgh, was persuaded by his teacher John Playfair to pursue engineering. Jardine had an enviable career. At a time when Edinburgh was a hotbed of scientific and technological progress, Jardine was able to collaborate with the leading people of his day. He provided engineering support for many of William Henry Playfair’s architectural

projects. (W. H. Playfair was the architect who designed the National Gallery of Scotland, The Royal College of Surgeons, and many elegant town houses, such as those on Royal Terrace and Regent Terrace.) Jardine also worked with Thomas Telford on many projects, including the famous Menai Straits bridge in Wales. Jardine assisted by calculating the strength of chains used in its construction. Over the course of their collaboration, Jardine and Telford became firm friends. Jardine was not merely an assistant on major projects led by others, now better remembered. He was a prolific engineer in his own right. Jardine built several reservoirs, and designed major water supply schemes, including that of Glasgow. He worked on parts of the Union Canal, surveyed railway routes, and built bridges, roads and harbours. Leith Harbour was one of Jardine’s developments. When you consider that Harlaw Reservoir is one of this impressive list of engineering achievements, it seems to gain a greater significance. Harlaw and Threipmuir Reservoirs are fed by Bavelaw Burn. This stream flows from the Northern slopes of the Pentland Hills, passing by moorland, sheep and cattle and then through both reservoirs on its way to Malleny Mills. There it joins the Water of Leith at Balerno and continues through the City of Edinburgh along steep gorges carved by ancient glaciers in the sedimentary rock (at Colinton, Craiglockhart and Dean) before finally flowing into the Firth of Forth at Leith. The river once provided energy for numerous water-powered mills along its route, dating back as far as the 13th century. There were about 70 mills in its hey day. These days, however, there are no mills to impede its flow, and the Water of Leith could do serious damage to Edinburgh and the surrounding villages if it were allowed to flood. Harlaw and Threipmuir Reservoirs provide an essential flood-water safety
net, containing any excess water at a safe distance from the city. But with the river, they also provide fishing grounds and a home for abundant wildlife. Harlaw Reservoir is stocked with rainbow trout, Threipmuir Reservoir with brown trout (which also live wild in the Water of Leith). Both reservoirs’ fish stocks are managed by the Malleny Angling Association for recreational fishing, and the natural stock of brown trout in the Water of Leith is topped up by Edinburgh City Council. Over a thousand new fish are added each year, these additional fish being genetically modified to prevent them breeding with their wild counterparts. But as well as trout, you can also find eels, minnows, sticklebacks, stone loach, bullhead and lampreys. For those interested in river angling, public fishing begins at Balerno, and continues along the length of the river to Leith. Balerno to Slateford Bridge is reserved for fly fishing only, but beyond Slateford Bridge, bait fishing is also permitted (maggots, worms and… sweetcorn, apparently!). A single permit, issued by the City of Edinburgh’s Culture & Leisure Department, is available from Post Offices along the river, and from the Water of Leith Visitor Centre at Slateford. It is free of charge and covers the whole fishing season (April 1st to September 30th).
Fly fishing within Harlaw and Threipmuir Reservoirs is managed by Malleny Angling Association. The club holds the fishing rights to both reservoirs, and promotes and protects fishing there. There are 100 members with an additional 10 season permit holders. Day permits are available from the Post Office in Balerno. The fishing season for Harlaw Reservoir is 1st April to 31st October, and for Threipmuir, 1st April to 30th September. For further information contact the secretary at: arthur.howes@ virgin.net This summer, you should notice some minor engineering improvements to Harlaw reservoir, thanks to Waste Recycling Environmental Limited, Scottish National Heritage and the City of Edinburgh Council. By the end of July a new surface to the reservoir pathway should be finished, along with widening of the existing path between the visitor centre and the Threipmuir Steading, and installation of new drains and culverts. Perhaps, in the dead of night, James Jardine may be tempted to revisit his reservoir, and cast a ghostly engineering eye over the latest works!

The Art of Matchmaking
M
any people like to have a go at matchmaking amongst friends and family. To a more or less formalised degree matchmakers have been part of many cultures for centuries. Drawing on a wide social network of friends, colleagues and acquaintances, for many people, is the way to find their partner. But what if you haven’t got that kind of network for whatever reason, or just don’t have the time to sift through endless profiles on an internet dating site? That’s where a Personal Introduction Agency can help. Allure Confidential, recently established locally, aims to offer a totally confidential, discreet and safe matchmaking service to men and women throughout the UK. Allure Confidential directors meet all their clients in person in order to gain an indepth understanding of their needs and to build a profile of them so that they can offer compatible matches. “We treat all our clients as individuals with honesty and integrity. Everyone is special and unique, no matter your age or background. Whether you are at the pinnacle of your career or taking your first steps climbing the ladder, we will tailor our service to meet all your requirements. We appreciate how difficult it is to find that special someone and are completely attuned to our client’s needs - this is crucial to our mutual success. In return, we only ask for your trust to let us do all the work for you.” Both directors are business professionals who have worked for many years within the corporate environment, one in Relationship and Stakeholder Management and the other in Accounting. They have a keen interest in human behaviour and relationships and one has recently achieved her Diploma in Neuro Linguistic Programming techniques. They have gained extensive experience in working with people building trust amongst friends and colleagues, all of this is fortified by a deep knowledge of human relationships.

Pentland Art Club
T
he Pentland Art Club, launched in 1967, is celebrating its 44th anniversary this year.
The Art Club was started by a few like-minded people who met at an art class in Currie. Initially meeting in a number of different venues, the club has been meeting in Balerno High School since 1984. Some of the original founder members still attend! The program for Thursday evenings, during term time, includes a variety of topics from work nights and workshops run by club members, to illustrated talks, workshops and tuition by visiting artists. There is also an occasional visit to a gallery, exhibition or venue of interest or painting outdoors in a group. Our annual exhibition is in August and is held at the Scout Hall in Currie. This year the exhibition starts on Saturday 13th August and runs until Thursday evening. The gallery is open from 10am to 8.30pm on Saturday and
16
from 2.30pm to 8.30pm Sunday to Thursday. Admission is free and you can spend a quiet moment looking around. Many members young and old have enjoyed fellowship and creativity over the years, others have joined more recently. A very warm welcome is always extended to new members and we look forward to the next few years and the writing of the ensuing chapters of the Club’s history. The photograph shows the exhibition from a previous year. New exhibits included now are tapestry, weaving, beading and giclÊe printing. For more information contact Marion John at 01506 880428.

Charity Bike Ride Gary Paterson
L
ocal resident Gary Paterson is about to set off on a huge charity cycle trek around Europe to raise funds for three charities in Tanzania as well as the Edinburgh Cyrenians. He aims to raise over £10,000. “I’ve just turned 33 and have spent most of my life around Edinburgh and West Lothian. As a child I lived in Kirknewton and went to Kirknewton Primary School and then moved to East Calder and finished secondary school at Balerno High School. Currently I live in East Calder until I leave on my trek on 10th August.
O’Groats, Orkney and Shetland. From Shetland I’ll fly to Bergen in Norway. The end of the trek will be Amsterdam, getting a ferry to Newcastle and cycling back to Edinburgh. My aim is to cycle 50 to 60 miles a day and I’ll be camping as I go as I don’t have funds to stay in hotels for six months. This is a huge trek covering over 20 countries.
I worked in Tanzania from 2008 - 2010 in Mwanza, the second biggest city. Tanzania is one of the world’s poorest countries. Behind the tourist images of the Serengti, Zanzibar and Mount Kilimanjaro lies a country where most of the Tanzanians are impoverished. During my time there I saw the difficulties that the less fortunate local people have to suffer on a daily basis. It made me realise how lucky we are in Europe just to have a loving family, hot food and a bed at night. From this experience I’ve decided to raise money for three charities in Tanzania that help all age ranges of local people. These are: An orphanage/baby home, see www.foreverangels.org A street children centre, see www.chekasanachildrenstrust.com A dental and development charity, see www.bridge2aid.org I’ve visited these charities in Tanzania personally and seen the good work they do in helping people live with hope, dignity and a chance of a better future. They are all UK registered charities. I also wanted to help a local charity, The Cyrenians. Cyrenians Farm, just outside Kirknewton, is a community enterprise which helps young vulnerable people become more confident and self reliant, see www.cyreniansfarm.org.uk I’ll be starting my trek from Edinburgh city centre on Wednesday 10th August and cycling to St Andrews the first day. During the Scotland stage I’ll also be going to John
20
A big thank you is due to Cotswald in Livingston, who have been great in helping me get the right camping and outdoor equipment and have given me a good discount on my equipment as this is a charity trek.” Gary has set up a website, www.cycle4africa.co.uk. Please visit this site for more information on the charities and to support him by visiting his Just Giving page which is linked from the website. He’ll be keeping a blog and posting photos as he goes. Every donation from Konect readers will make a difference and be most appreciated by Gary and the charities he is supporting. Any local companies wishing to sponsor Gary should contact him at gary@cycle4africa.co.uk

Vet’s Tip: Rabbit Care
R
abbits are the third most popular domestic pet in the U.K., and yet are one of the most neglected. It is estimated there are over one million rabbits living as pets in the U.K. and many of these bright, intelligent creatures lives could be greatly improved through just a few changes. Rabbits are highly sociable animals and love to live in pairs, especially a neutered male and female. A single rabbit living alone is easily bored, and has no opportunity of bonding with a partner by mutual grooming or resting side by side – both entirely natural instincts. Rabbits enjoy human company too and can often be more sociable than some cats! My four rabbits are often to be found relaxing on the sofa, stretched out in front of the TV!
Claylands Cottage Cattery ...for contented cats
Rabbits were never designed to live in a confined space. They need space to run, jump, explore and share companionship with their own kind, so must have accommodation to allow these natural behaviours. They should have space to run around, outside of their living quarters, for a minimum two to three hours a day. A large secure run attached to their hutch is ideal, as this gives the rabbit freedom to exercise when he wants. Hutches should be tall enough so the rabbit can stretch up on its hind legs, and long enough so they can run freely from one end to the other – a minimum guideline is 6ft x 2ft x 2ft with an 8ft run attached. T
he SSPCA (Scottish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty for Animal) Centre in Mansfield, established in 1982, was the first animal welfare centre in the country. Originally a rest home for retired work horses they have become an animal care centre, taking in abused animals or animals in need of attention, strays or pets that the owner can’t care for any more. There are pets, farm animals and all kinds of other species from ferrets to snakes to rabbits to ponies. The slogan “a dog is for life not just for Christmas” here goes for cats and goats as well. All animals are cared for back to health, given lots of love and are fully vaccinated before going to new homes. The Centre makes sure that the new owners are ready to care for and look after the animals, especially when it comes to lizards and more unusual pets. New owners are encouraged to

Balerno to Blinkbonny By Karen Murray
T
here are numerous walking routes that begin in and around the high school in Balerno which is great as you can begin there and decide which one to take depending on your mood that day. On my latest foray from this starting point I headed past the rugby ground opposite Malleny House and left onto the Lymphoy Road. I have walked this way often before but I always enjoy the view over the fields and as far as Fife, taking in the remains of the Lennox Tower and the tranquillity of it all. On this occasion the sun was smiling down, the air warm and my pace was slowing as I enjoyed the evening air.
At the end of the Lymphoy Road, I stepped through the rather grand entrance and
onto The Kirk gate opposite the cemetery. Turning right I walked past the cemetery and took the next right turn onto Blinkbonny Road. I usually prefer not to walk on a road, but these roads are pretty quiet and the views over golden fields are stunning. Wandering the Blinkbonny Road I was thinking about how the little hamlet grew up during the late 19th and 20th century alongside Blinkbonny Farm and what it must have been like all those years ago. The mill workers’ houses were built by the owners of Kinleith Paper Mill, the site of which you pass later on this walk. However, before I got to Blinkbonny itself I took the path down to the Water of Leith, signed off to the left. There is a short

Balerno to Blinkbonny By Karen Murray
flight of steps, emblazoned with a huge area of bright purple daisy-like flowers at the time I walked down, descending into the dampness and darkness of a canopy of trees over the water.
There is a little footbridge which you don’t cross but it’s worth stepping onto to take in the delightful waterfalls sparkling their way down to the Water of Leith. The path continues down to the Water of Leith walkway, crossing over it and winding down to the banks of the river. It is a little overgrown here and I did suffer a few nettle stings, but as it continues between the site of the Kinleith Mill (now demolished) and the river, it widens a little and I took some time to enjoy the birdlife swooping down to the water’s edge. Crossing a footbridge, I then took a deep breath before climbing the very steep steps back up to the Lanark Road - always a killer if you aren’t fit enough! I have to confess to hopping on a bus back to Balerno where I had left my car, but the more conscientious of you could walk along the road until you reach the turning for Currie Kirk. You can then either walk to the cemetery and retrace your steps, or walk along the Water of Leith walkway back to Balerno.
The first part of the walk is about two miles and takes around an hour, with a similar length of time to return if you are not cheating and hopping on a bus!

Crushed Raspberry Tart
L
ate summer means fresh raspberries, mushed up with fresh creme fraiche and wrapped in soft flakey pastry.
An incredibly simple yet tasty recipe from www.eatseasonably.co.uk Serves 4 INGREDIENTS • 1 packet of puff pastry • 1 egg, beaten • 200g/ 8oz creme fraiche • 200g/8oz raspberries INSTRUCTIONS Preheat the oven to 180˚C/350˚F/Gas 4. Roll out the pastry on a lightly floured surface and cut out a 20cm (8”) circle. Then, with the remaining pastry cut out 1cm (0.5”) strips to make a boarder around the edge of the tart. Brush the beaten egg around the edge of the tart, roughly 1cm (0.5”) thick, then lay the 1cm (0.5”) strips of pastry on the egg to create an edge to the tart and brush the egg onto this. Put the pastry on to a baking tray & bake for 20 minutes until golden brown, then take out and leave to cool. Spread the crème fraiche over the pastry base. Slightly crush the raspberries with a fork & spoon over the crème fraiche.

Rasberry facts
• Raspberries are members of the rose family. • There are approximately 200 different species of raspberries. While most people are aware of red and black raspberries, they also come in purple and gold. • Raspberries are high vitamin C and naturally have no fat, cholesterol or sodium. They are also a good source of iron and folate • Raspberries only last for two to three days in the fridge. If you want to keep raspberries on hand, freeze them and then allow the fruit to thaw at room temperature when ready to use. When freezing raspberries, you have two options : if you freeze the fruit without sugar, it will keep for about three months. However, if you add sugar and then freeze, it will last in the freezer for a full year. • The minute you pull the fruit from the plant it stops ripening – unripe berries will not ripen once picked!

Edinburgh Ballet Sara Wood
I
n a typical pre-school ballet class at Edinburgh Ballet, a line of girls dressed up as fairies are catching stars ... later they might be collecting shells from the seashore or flying like butterflies. Sara Wood, who runs Edinburgh Ballet, bases her teaching on imagination, role play and story-telling in such a way that the students hardly notice they are learning great technique. “After all, ballet is all about telling a story,” she explains. She takes students from age two and is creative about teaching hand-eye coordination and having fun in the process. She often starts a session by asking them, “What would you like to be today?” Sara has been dancing since she was three years old. She grew up in Edinburgh, spent some time in Kirknewton and is now based in Currie. All the way through high school she had a clear idea of what she wanted to do on leaving school – dance! She went on to study at the Royal Academy of Dance in London, where she graduated with a B.A. Hons degree in the Art and Teaching of Ballet, covering technique, performance, teacher training, costume design, anatomy and physiology, pilates but most importantly - dancing every day! Her first post on leaving the Royal Academy was teaching full time at a ballet school back in Edinburgh.
Seeking a new challenge but still with a focus on dance, she accepted a ballet teaching position in Germany. She spoke very little German when she arrived but was teaching for five hours per day. “It was actually a great experience and way of teaching – very few words, lots of mime!” laughs Sara. She was speaking a lot more German by the time she left though. With this experience under her belt, and after a brief spell in England, Sara headed to the States where she worked for the Northwest Florida Ballet Company, both performing
and teaching ballet – of course – and pilates. It was a professional ballet company within a school children attended for the whole of the school day following a broad curriculum of academic subjects with ballet classes everyday. She worked there for three and a half years, coming away with a lot of ideas. On returning to Edinburgh, she felt that there was a need for a specialised ballet school in the area. Whilst most dance schools offer a range of dance, Edinburgh Ballet, set up in 2008, focusses on ballet only, in particular pure classical ballet. Opening with seven students enrolled, it has gone from strength to strength and now has over seventy students who come from all over Edinburgh. The studio is currently based at Stevenson College. Sara is a Royal Academy of Dance registered teacher, a Licentiate of the Royal Academy of Dance and is qualified to enter students for RAD examinations to grade 8 and beyond. You can contact Edinburgh Ballet on 07723-589-280 info@edinburgh-ballet.co.uk or see the website at www.edinburgh-ballet.co.uk
