elcome to the December edition of Konect. If for you the end of the year involves lots of shopping, organising and jobs around the house, you’ll find all you need within the pages of this magazine – reduce your stress by picking one thing that you would normally do yourself and getting a local business to do it for you instead. A crisp late autumn/early winter day is a wonderful time to get out for a walk. Our walk feature this month is a rigorous walk in the Pentlands which starts and ends near a wee coffee shop, the Pentland Hills Cafe Express - I’ve checked out the coffee there for you and can safely say it’s good coffee! Most of our usual columns are here, but some have been replaced for this month with local seasonal event and charity information we were asked to help with. This is a joint December/January issue as we don’t produce a magazine for January, but we will be back with the February issue. We’d like to wish all readers and local businesses a great holiday season, and thanks for supporting Konect this year!

WHAT’S ON

DECORATED TREES: Entries from the 2015 Balerno Christmas Tree Festival

The first Balerno Christmas Tree Festival was held in 2010, and no-one, including the organizers, had a clear idea of what a Christmas Tree Festival was. Seven festivals later, and the 8th Festival will be held on 9th and 10th December. The idea of the festival seems to have taken hold and there will be some 34 decorated trees on show in both the St Joseph’s and Scout Halls. MAIN STREET SWITCH ON: Thursday 7th December at 6.45pm

8 | KONECT BALERNO

The Festival is organised by Balerno Parish Church, and trees (supplied by Caring Christmas Trees) are entered by groups and organisations across the community, ranging from church groups to local businesses. The ideas which lie behind the decorations are always fantastic, and over the years and amongst many others we’ve had a waterfall (guess who put that in), a complete farmers market in miniature, several Music Festivals, a comprehensive postal service, a flock of sheep and editions of local papers as well as the Story of the Nativity. Then there’s always the task of selecting a winner; never an easy job! So this year we’re going to have two prizes; one will be awarded by our

judges while the other will be a People’s Choice. So come along and join the fun! The opening hours are Saturday 10am-4pm and Sunday 11am-3pm, and admission is free although we offer the opportunity for donations (£2 for adults please) for Ravelrig RDA and Harmeny School. And while you’re in Balerno, there’s the Christmas Farmers Market on Saturday 9th in the morning, and the Broxburn and Livingston Brass Band playing a Concert for Christmas in the evening. Oh, and the Main Street Christmas Lights and Christmas Tree are being switched on on Thursday 7th at 6.45pm; and all the shops will be open late. There’s lots happening at Balerno Christmas!

VILLAGE PEOPLE

Years later, when Dorothy was a student at Emerson College in East Sussex, she did a poetry class. “My tutor believed in me,” she says. “He told me that I had talent and could make a go of it. So I always credit him with setting me on my way.” For 30 years Dorothy ran creative writing courses in schools, the community and in mental health centres. For the past 11 years she has also worked as a Human Givens psychotherapist. She has seen how story and metaphor can be helpful tools in encouraging people to overcome difficulties. And this ties in nicely with her life as a writer. When her children were young she could only manage to write bits and pieces on scraps of paper. Later, as they became more independent, she was able to make more time for her poetry. Electricity and insulation were added to one of the garden sheds, and this became Dorothy’s writing den. Her children came to understand that when mum went to her shed they were not to disturb her. Dorothy considers writing to be a way of “honouring your life”. “We all lead such fast-paced lives,” she comments, “and we don’t always pause to enjoy what we are doing. But writing makes you pause and notice things. For example, if you go out for a walk, knowing you are going to come back and write about your experience – even if it’s just a few lines –you start seeing more, being more aware. You look and absorb.” 18 | KONECT BALERNO

Although Dorothy says her life is not exceptional, she has lived in France and the Soviet Union and is well-travelled. She describes her poems as accessible, and hopes that they will inspire people to write their own. An example follows, and you can visit www.dorothybaird.com to read more. Mothers We are potters who never rest, shaping our children, fashioning uniqueness with our busy hearts, and we are the light that seeps into curtains and floorboards, shifting their molecules into a home, our whole body strung to the tune of concern, an ear on edge, gauging the register of silence. We orchestrate the days, balancing harmonies of the insignificant, remembering the forgotten. Each morning we rise, arms already stretched to span our children’s griefs, and hoard moments like gold, so we may feel the weight and glister of their past. The Village People column is contributed by Suzanne Green. Suzanne, a freelance writer/ editor, lives in Balerno and writes regularly for Konect. She is married to Andy and they have two adult daughters.

PHOTO CR

“English was always my favourite and best subject,” says Dorothy Baird. “And when I was about 11 Don McLean’s American Pie was released. I loved that song and it sort of oiled the wheels for my own poetic expression.”

EDIT: Suza

Poet Dorothy Baird lives in Currie and recently took part in the Pentlands Book Festival. She is also a psychotherapist, who has seen how creative writing can be therapeutic for those with mental health issues. Dorothy and her husband Philip, a retired teacher, are the parents of three adult children.

THOUGHT FOR THE MONTH

Happy Christmas? Happy? When people say Happy Christmas, do you feel a warm, cosy glow inside? For many people who struggle with their emotional and mental health, Christmas can be a difficult time. If your mood is low, it can be hard to raise it. If you are lonely, it can be hard to invite yourself to Christmas dinner.

House Cleaning • Commercial Cleaning • Ironing Carpet Cleaning • Steam Cleaning Contact Fiona Byrne on: 0131 477 2062 // 0796 678 8672 info@fionashousecleaning.co.uk www.fionashousecleaning.co.uk

Merry? Maybe the warm glow will only come if you are ‘merry’ for other reasons, the sherry or other preferred tipple which masks the pain you would otherwise feel. Boxing day is a time when hospitals see many people who have taken overdoses. Seasons Greetings? If Christmas means spending time with relatives you dislike and who might ridicule you, you will hardly be welcoming the season with open arms. Joyeaux Noel! French for happy Christmas, but if we feel neither happy nor merry, can we attain being joyful? Not a silly smile but a desire and a choice and a longing to see the good in things and to focus on them rather than the difficult aspects.

CLEARVUE OPTICIANS VISION HEALTH CARE

Sometimes you can find an unexpected joy and peace in the little things, being part of a community celebration, catching a glimpse of wonder in natural beauty, taking a risk and offering hospitality to a neighbour. Do look out for others who may find the season difficult and try to find a way to encourage them! MONEY MATTERS

THE VCT VERSUS EIS DEBATE Most of the articles written for Konect should be of interest to most of the readers. This particular article deals with what the industry calls High Net Worth individuals (HNW). These are people who have invested the maximum into their pension and into their Individual Savings Account (ISA). This means they may be able to consider higher risk investments. The main two are Venture Capital Trusts (VCT) and Enterprise Investment Scheme (EIS). They involve investments into smaller companies and hence are higher risk. Because of this the government gives very generous tax breaks. Most people assume VCTs and EISs are the same but they have very different structures and offer very different tax breaks.

28 | KONECT BALERNO

SIMILARITIES: Both give investors an upfront 30% income tax credit, which can be offset against Income Tax. DIFFERENCES: EISs need to be held for three years whereas VCTs need to be held for five years. EISs are outside your estate for Inheritance Tax (IHT) whereas VCTs are not. EISs can be used to defer Capital Gains Tax but VCTs cannot. VCTs receive tax-free dividends but EISs do not. Exactly which investment solution is best will depend on the investor’s circumstances and attitude to risk, but due to recent pension legislation changes both VCT and EIS investments have become considerably more popular. The monthly Money Matters column is contributed by Personal Money Management. This month’s piece written by Dr P M Marshall.

PlayStation Move

SEASONAL

’Tis the season to stock up on batteries There are very few people whose Christmases won’t involve some kind of technology: not just presents, although even the simplest toys seem to come packed with tech these days. You might use technology to provide festive music, or to stream a crackling log fire from Netflix. Here’s how to make sure technology doesn’t trip you up during the festive season. Check what kind of batteries the children’s toys will need. Having a good stock of rechargeable AA and AAA batteries (and a charger!) covers most eventualities, but some manufacturers like to keep you on your toes by demanding LR44s or CR2032s or other arcane options. Don’t leave it to the last minute: relatively uncommon batteries can be hard to find at short notice, especially if you’re reliant on small shops. Look out your sharp scissors and a small Phillips cross-head screwdriver too: electronic items often come in plastic packaging that’s hard to get into, while larger toys can be secured to their packaging with screws or cable ties. Not every device that needs a charger comes with one so you might need to get additional chargers or adaptors. Check first, though: the charger you need for, say, a new Nokia is the same as for a Kindle or PlayStation 4 controller. If some of your gadget gifts are pre-owned something that can save you a great deal of money - check that the batteries still hold a charge, because batteries have a finite lifespan. For example, many PlayStation Move controllers being sold as-new on eBay have been sitting in warehouses for so long that their rechargeable batteries no longer hold a charge, even though they 30 | KONECT BALERNO

are unused. Replacement batteries are easy to get, but not on Christmas Day. If Santa’s bringing a games console, it’s a very good idea to connect it to your broadband well in advance: there’s nothing more dispiriting on Christmas Day than having to wait hours for a system update to download before you can play anything - especially if your broadband has slowed to a crawl because everybody else in the street is trying to do the same thing. And if you’re planning a bit of multi-player gaming with make sure you have enough controllers. It’s a similar story with computers, tablets and smartphones: there have often been quite significant system software updates since they were made. There’s less pressure than with consoles, though, because while consoles tend to be quite huffy - Xbox Ones and PS4s often refuse to let you use online features until you’ve updated your system software - computers and mobile devices don’t demand you drop everything. Did we say “drop”? Unfortunately one of the problems with technology as presents is that some gadgets are eminently breakable. It’s worth checking if your home insurance or current account protects items such as mobile phones, tablets, laptops or TVs from accidental damage (and that the excess doesn’t make such coverage pointless) - and with mobile devices for children it’s an even better idea to put their gadget in a sturdy, scratchand impact-resistant case. That way you can be confident of a smashing time without smashing anything expensive.

Salmon and Monkfish

Filo Wreath Festive Filo Wreath!

This festive wreath makes a great alternative to traditional roast turkey and can be prepared in advance the night before. Ingredients: Sunflower oil, for greasing 100g butter, melted 270g pack filo pastry, thawed if frozen 450g salmon fillet, skinned and diced 450g monkfish fillet, skinned and diced 225g cooked peeled tiger prawns 2 tbsp lemon juice 3 tbsp chopped fresh dill Salt and freshly ground black pepper Lemon wedges and dill sprigs, to garnish

Serves 6 Ready in 1 hr 30 mins, plus chilling time Tip: Filo pastry sheets can vary in size so simply cut to fit. Don’t worry if they tear, just place another piece of buttered pastry on top to cover the tear. 50 | KONECT BALERNO

1. Use the sunflower oil to grease a 1.2 litre capacity ring mould, then line the mould with cling film. 2. Brush the sheets of pastry one by one with melted butter and use nearly all of them to line the ring mould. Overlap the pastry sheets slightly as you go and repeat the layers 3-4 times. Leave the excess pastry to drape over the side of the mould. 3. Mix the salmon, monkfish and prawns in a large bowl and stir in the lemon juice and chopped dill. Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper. 4. Spoon the fish mixture into the pastry-lined mould, pressing down gently. Fold the excess pastry in over the filling and top with more buttered sheets of pastry, cutting them to fit and completely cover the filling. Stamp small star shapes out of any remaining sheets of buttered pastry and place on a plate. 5. Cover the ring mould and the plate with cling film and chill in the fridge for at least 1 hour (or overnight). Carefully invert the ring mould onto a large baking sheet and then remove the mould and the cling film. Re-melt any remaining butter and brush all over the pastry. 6. Bake in a preheated oven at 190C/fan 170C/Gas Mark 5 for 40-45 minutes until the pastry is crisp and golden. Bake the pastry stars on a separate baking sheet for 5 minutes until golden. 7. Allow the wreath to stand for 5 minutes then transfer to a serving platter and decorate with the pastry stars. Garnish with lemon wedges and dill sprigs.

WALK

When you want to get away from it all, there is nothing better than to head for the hills. And the glorious thing about living in this area is that the Pentlands are on your doorstep. The question then is which of the many walks to take. I have done a fair few of them since living here, from easy walks with a buggy to something a little tougher but still suitable for children and, when I am escaping the children, something really energetic. With the hills so close to home, during the shorter winter months a fairly long and challenging walk can be managed without a long car journey using up the precious daylight. So if you’re feeling the need for some peace and quiet, some energetic walking and some fabulous views, why not try the Flotterstone circular walk? It’s a pretty challenging route encompassing the highest and finest of the Pentland hills including Turnhouse Hill, Carnethy Hill, Scald Law, East Kip and West Kip.

• Walk Distance = 18km • Time = 6 hrs for the full circular (as described)

54 | KONECT BALERNO

The walk begins at the Flotterstone car park (just off the A702) at the Flotterstone Inn. There is wee building on the far side of the carpark which used to be the Visitor Centre and is now a cafe serving very fine coffees and food, so you have a couple of options for refreshments after the walk! Follow the path from the cafe for around 500m until you see the green signpost to Scald Law on the left. Follow the track past the trees and Glencorse burn on the left until you come to a gate and then a wooden bridge. Crossing the bridge you are straight onto the path that accesses the hills. The climb to the top of Turnhouse Hill is well marked and fairly steep, and can be rather muddy over the winter. The views back from here are superb and to the right you get a glimpse of Glencorse Reservoir backed by Castlelaw. At the summit there are incredible 360 degree views - to the north Fife and the Forth Bridges, to the west over the wilder and more remote parts of the Pentland Hills Regional Park and to the south towards Penicuik you can see the site of the Battle of Rullion Green where General Thomas Dalziel defeated 900 Covenanters on 28 November 1666. You are now on the ridge and a grand traverse stretches ahead with superb views off to either side.

The path then descends, losing around 80m down to a bealach (a mountain pass) where the ridge is crossed by a fence. Pass through a gate to begin the ascent to Carnethy Hill - the second highest of the Pentlands. The summit is marked by a cairn and is a wonderful viewpoint for all directions, both ahead to Scald Law with the Kips to its right and back towards Edinburgh. From here you can also see the narrow valley track that leads north west towards Bavelaw and Balerno. Once you have rested and enjoyed the views, continue on the ridge path, thankfully downhill, towards another bealach. An old right of way crosses the ridge here, known as the Kirk Road. If you were to go left you would come down to a layby on the A702, but the route to the right will take you to the top end of Loganlea Reservoir. If you have the energy, however, you’ll want to continue along the ridge first to take in Scald Law, the highest of the Pentlands, before coming back to the Kirk Road. The top is marked by a trig point and the views fantastic once more. At this point you could extend your walk further by heading over what are known as the Kips and following the track to the Threipmuir Reservoir and into Balerno.

If that really does seem a step too far (and it certainly was for me), then you can make your way back to the Kirk Road and follow the track down to the Loganlea Reservoir - one of several in the Pentlands that supplies Edinburgh with drinking water. You pass through a gap in the fence and pick up the track that runs along by the reservoir, which soon becomes a tarred road running alongside the Logan burn. Next you reach the Glencorse Reservoir where the road passes a line of Scots pines. It then leads all the way back to the start at Flotterstone. An alternative is to take a signed path and track on the right after the reservoir that leads back via the old filter beds. Back where you started you can now collect a rather excellent coffee at the Pentland Hills Cafe Express, safe in the knowledge that you have earned it. The cafe is open all winter daily except Tuesdays and Wednesdays; check opening hours on their facebook page “Pentland Hills Cafe Express.” The walk feature is written by Karen Murray. Karen is passionate about walking in the great outdoors having been brought up to love walking by her Father (still hillwalking in his 80s).

COMMUNITY

VOLUNTEERS SOUGHT FOR A70 TRAFFIC RESEARCH PROJECT For many years now the traffic build up along the A70 from Balerno to the Gillespie lights has been the source of repeated complaints. Car drivers moan about the travel time at rush hour, pedestrians are concerned about an inability to cross the road safely, parents worry about their children walking to school against the flow of rat runners and bus passengers complain about the length of time their journey to town is taking. Now is your chance to do something about it. Two 4th year Civil Engineering students at Heriot-Watt University are to undertake a traffic microsimulation approach to vehicle movement on the A70 from the West Lothian/Edinburgh boundary to the Gillespie lights. The students walked the road at the end of September and then spoke to their supervisor, Dr Walker who has summarised the projects as follows: “The approach that is emerging is a stateof-the-art traffic analysis, and it involves the students creating a computer simulation of the A70 corridor.” The exciting thing about doing this approach according to Dr Walker is that virtually ‘any’ scenario can be tested. For example, the simulation could assess the impact of a parking ban, relief road, bollards on rat runs, MOVA-style traffic control systems, road works, etc. People would be able to see what happens to the traffic when such changes are made on the model. The students will be

encouraged to look for the small, clever, cost-effective solutions which have disproportionately positive impacts. Dr Walker has pointed out that one of the key things for creating a good model is calibration, which means obtaining peak hour traffic counts, observations of parking (vehicle numbers, locations, dwell times etc.), bus movements, turning movements into and out of the A70 from side roads, traffic signal timings (including pedestrian activations of crossings) etc. This will require the students – and any helpers – to conduct a series of observations. The model can then use this data and be checked to make sure the so-called ‘base model’ accurately mimics the real-world. It might even help predict the impact of traffic from future housing developments on the road system. The next stage for the collection of data is planned for February 2018 though exact dates have yet to be fixed. This is your chance to help by joining the team of volunteers who will collect this data. If you can offer a couple of hours on two mornings in February 2018 (7am-9am to help collect the data) then please contact c.e.beevers@blueyonder.co.uk or telephone 0131 453 4517 with your contact details.

Torphin Financial Planning

Gran

Midlo Pentla T: 01 M: 079 ifa@to www.

Torphin Financial Planning is a trading name of Torphin Asso regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority.

The Government has improved pension flexibilities and ISA allowances over the last two years, but we still have historically low interest rates and uncertainty about the provision of Long Term Care and Inheritance tax. Individuals are still concerned how to get a reasonable return on their hard-earned savings and investments. With inflation now reaching 3%* and interest rates well below that, cash held on deposit is losing value. There has also been major legislation changes to pensions, affecting most company schemes and many people across the country who previously worked for the large Nationalised industries have now to decide what they should do with their deferred pensions. Individuals may be surprised to find out they have old employer schemes with very high transfer values. People who are concerned about their financial wellbeing and assets should be asking themselves the following questions. • • • • • • • • • •

Are you getting a good return on your savings and/or investments? Are you happy with the service from your existing investment adviser? Are you making use of your annual ISA allowance? Are you maximising your tax allowances each year? Have you or are you making adequate provision for your retirement? Do you have your potential Inheritance tax liability covered? Have you reviewed your wills in the last five years? Have you gone through a full pension forecast exercise? Do you have your potential Long Term Care costs covered? Do you use an Independent Financial Adviser?

If the answer is no to any of these questions please contact us for a no obligation chat on the phone, to arrange a meeting in our offices or email any questions you may have to see if we can be of assistance to you
