elcome to the first Konect for 2017. We’re looking forward to another year of celebrating all things local! We’re starting off with a feature by Suzanne on Balerno Village Trust – a lot of people don’t realise how many of the events in the village are organised by the Trust, or what its role is, so hopefully this month’s feature will clarify. All our regular columns are here from our usual local contributors, I hope you enjoy them. Thanks for reading Konect and supporting local businesses.

COMMUNITY

BY SUZANNE GREEN

: o n r e l Ba OUR VIBRANT VILLAGE! “If you want to live in a vibrant community, sometimes you have to do something to make that happen,” says Emma Galloway, Vice Chair of Balerno Village Trust (BVT). The Trust is the development arm of Balerno Community Council, and aims to make Balerno a good place to live, work and visit. “A village trust can focus on getting a community active,” says Emma, “and can concentrate on developing assets – such as community buildings – or establishing a Farmer’s Market.” The BVT’s first project was the Farmer’s Market, set up in 2005. Held on Main Street, on the second Saturday of the month (except for January), it offers a range of products and an opportunity for neighbours to catch up with one another. Emma, who is responsible for the monthly event, makes it a point to buy her fruit and vegetables at the Market. “If we want the vendors to continue to come, we have to support them,” she comments. “So I am intentional about doing my shopping at the Farmer’s Market on Market Day.” As well as fresh produce, you can buy speciality cheeses and chocolate, sourdough bread and marshmallows. You’ll find sausages, bacon, preserves, cakes and peri-peri sauce. And if you want to have lunch there, you 8 | KONECT BALERNO

can enjoy burgers, sausage rolls, cappuccinos and lattes. There are also many decorative and non-edible products on offer.

The market gets us out of the house and gives us the opportunity to get to know one another

“We’re all so busy that we don’t always see our neighbours,” says Emma. “But the Market gets us out of the house and gives us the opportunity to get to know one another. Main Street is buzzing on Market Day – normally about 500 to 600 people attend!” Speaking of buzzing, did you know that the BVT has two bee colonies? Eventually they hope to see the production of Balerno Honey. The Trust’s annual events include “Apple Day”, which takes place in November. Villagers are encouraged to pick their apples, which are then pressed to make delicious apple juice (including a mulled version). There’s an apple pie competition too. In March “Tattie Day” encourages locals to grow potatoes, which are then sold in packs of five. Last May 25 villagers entered the Scarecrow Competition. Entrants paid five pounds for a bag of straw

and some scarecrow-making materials. And gradually scarecrows started appearing in people’s gardens. “The purpose of this event is to encourage everyone to get out, take a walk and appreciate not just the scarecrows but also our beautiful village,” Emma explains. Last year’s winner was Caitlin Boddy, with her sunbathing scarecrow.

Article by Suzanne Green. Suzanne, a freelance writer/editor, lives in Balerno and writes regularly for Konect. She is married to Andy, and they have two adult daughters.

GET INVOLVED!

A volunteer gardening

The BVT is also working with the National Trust to develop Malleny Garden. “It’s a lovely property with a Georgian wing,” says Emma. “There are beautiful yew trees and benches where you can sit in the summer. But it’s underutilised. The National Trust will be putting on a few Fun Days, including an Easter Egg Hunt, and we’re asking for volunteers to help with revitalising the vegetable plots. Another project is working with the City of Edinburgh Council to replant the flower beds on Main Street. “Instead of corporate shrubbery, they will be cottage gardens,” says Emma. “Foxgloves and really pretty plants … rather than the standard green shrubs.” The Trust is asking local businesses to adopt a flower bed and to be responsible for watering, weeding and maintaining it.

BVT’s Apple Day

The BVT is a founding partner of Harlaw Hydro. Through this scheme a turbine, located behind the Ranger’s Centre at Harlaw Reservoir, sends a flow of water from the reservoirs to the Water of Leith, generating electricity in the process. The Trust has recently completed a community consultation, asking people how they would like the funds from this project to be used. Although the government has provided funding for the past three years, that is coming to an end soon and the Trust will need to find ways to raise funds. Each of the eight Board members takes responsibility for a different project. There are a number of volunteers, but more would be very welcome! “We try to make the various activities bite-sized, so that busy people can take part,” says Emma. Winning scarecrow from BVTs scarecrow competition

The real question is what kind of community do you want to be part of? Are you happy for Balerno to be a dormitory town, or do you want to live in an active, thriving village? Find out more about the BVT at www.balernovt.org. uk and see the Facebook pages for Balerno Village Trust and Balerno Farmer’s Market.

AUCTIONEER’S TALK

With global interest in antique auction houses reaching an all-time high, has there ever been a better time to buy at auction? But what do you know about this fascinating world? And what do you need to know before jumping into it? If you are considering going to an auction house, don’t be daunted or feel out of your depth. Simply follow these insider tips to buying at auction: • You will often benefit from taking time to do a little research about any item you may be interested in buying from auction. This will allow you to check approximate prices that a similar item may have achieved at auction, rather than in a retail environment • Pick an auction house that specialises in a variety of antiques and collectables but, more importantly, that sells the type of item(s) you are interested in purchasing. Visit the auction house’s website before viewing days or sale to see the catalogue. Each item for sale with normally be included, alongside an image • Before the sale day, try to attend one of the organised view days in 12 | KONECT BALERNO

order to view the item in person and satisfy yourself of its condition. If you are unable to attend in person, you can ask the Valuer/ Auctioneer for a ‘condition report’ and/or additional images – this should not incur any additional charge • When you attend the auction on the sale day, make sure you have a set budget in mind, as it is easy to get caught up in the excitement of the day. If you cannot attend in person, you may leave an ‘absentee bid’ with the auctioneer, so they can bid on your behalf. Some auction houses may allow you to bid by telephone for higher value items or to bid on-line, via a live auction platform. While bidding by telephone or on-line offers the comfort of your own home, you must consider that bidding on-line may incur additional charges (2-3% on top of the sales price is norm) • If you are lucky enough to bid successfully on an item, you should ensure that you pay for and collect the item within the required timescale. Most auction houses will ask for you to do so within 7 working days of the sale. When nuying, it’s important to familiarise yourself with the auction house’s terms and conditions. These will be available on their website or you can ask for a copy of these

when you visit. Next time, I will be focussing on current trends, styles and which items are in fashion.

THOUGHT FOR THE MONTH

BY PAT BANFILL

LOVE LANGUAGES We know that people speak different languages and if you don’t know French or Chinese it is hard to have a conversation with French or Chinese people. Gary Chapman, in his book The Five Love Languages, suggests that all of us learn to give and receive love and affection through one or two preferred love languages.

out what the love language of each individual is and to try to ‘speak’ of our love for them in that way. If you have a large family this may seem a daunting task, but actually children need to receive love through all of the love languages, so it’s best to start working out what the adults’ love languages are first. There are many stories of relationships being changed for the better when people have started to use these ideas, marriages becoming more satisfying, and relationships with parents, children and grandparents much happier.

Furthermore people we love will be at their best when their ‘love tank’ is full. These love languages are: affirming words, quality time, meaningful gifts, helpful actions and physical touch. In families and with close friends we feel loved by people who have worked out what our preferred love language is, our love tank will be full and we will feel secure. So our challenge in families is to work

Why not use the time around Valentine’s Day to try out some of these ideas?

COMMUNITY

THREATENED CLOSURE OF RBS BRANCH AT JUNIPER GREEN

BY CLIFF BEEVERS

Original branch premises at 548 Lanark Road, where the bank operated from it’s opening as the Commercial Bank of Scotland in 1898. Pictured in 1965.

A bank provides a social role in our communities, and the threatened closure of the Juniper Green Branch of RBS will affect us all in one way or another. A campaign group was formed at the end of last year to find ways to mitigate the effect of the closure. They have adopted a twin track approach to the way financial services might be retained in the valley communities after 5th June 2017. *Contact with RBS would be maintained to see what they would do to minimise the loss of a face to face banking service in the Water of Leith communities. A mobile van service, deployed in semi-rural towns like Haddington and Lanark by RBS, would be suggested as a partial solution. Consultation in line with the Banking Protocol would also be invoked. *A second approach is to see what alternative financial services might be attracted into the area given the possibility of office space in Juniper Green becoming available on the abandoned toilet site. Our politicians are well aware that it is UK and Scottish Governments who need to play a role in preserving our small, but significant, high streets and will do their best to pressure the appropriate ministers to see if 24 | KONECT BALERNO

any of the solutions the campaign group are adopting can be given a fair wind. To this end Joanna Cherry asked a question of Teresa May at Prime Minister’s Question Time on Wednesday 11th January and Gordon MacDonald tabled a question to the First Minister on Thursday 19th January. Gordon Lindhurst has written to the Scottish minister with responsibility for banking, Paul Wheelhouse and Ricky Henderson is to tackle RBS on the access to banking protocol. The campaign group are most concerned for the elderly and vulnerable members of our community who are unlikely or unable to take advantage of online banking. If you are in that category or have a relative similarly affected and would like to make your situation known to us please give Cliff Beevers a call on 0131 453 4517 or email him at chair@junipergreencc.org.uk and you will be kept in touch with the campaign group’s activities.

Article contributed by Cliff Beevers, on behalf of the campaign group

Some of the business community are likely to be inconvenienced by the closure of the branch whilst others will be severely affected. Mark Porteous has agreed to act as a focal point for the business community so if you have business interests in any of the Water of Leith communities and will be inconvenienced by the closure of another face to face financial service please contact Mark at mark@porteousfunerals.com to make your voice heard. CAMPAIGN MEMBERS • Joanna Cherry MP • Gordon MacDonald MSP • Gordon Lindhurst MSP • Councillor Ricky Henderson, (Chairman of Balerno CC) • Allister McKillop (Chairman of Currie CC) • Vic Stewart (Vice Chairman • of Juniper Green CC) • Cliff Beevers (Chairman of Juniper Green CC)

MONEY MATTERS

BY DAVID HENDERSON BA, DipFA

END OF YEAR TAX PLANNING From a tax point of view, February and March are the most important months as they offer the last chance to use many tax opportunities which if not taken will be lost. Independent tax planning: Where one spouse pays a lower rate of tax than the other it may be beneficial to transfer investments to the lower tax paying spouse to save income tax and possibly capital gains tax (CGT). Transferring between married couples will not incur any inheritance tax or CGT. Tax-efficient Investments: This is the main method of investing savings with freedom from income tax and capital gains tax without giving up access to the investments. For this tax year the annual ISA contribution limit is £15,240. It is up to you how you split it between investments, cash or even “Innovative Finance” such as P2P lending (more on those another day). It is permissible to move a cash ISA into investment.

p mm

Capital Gains Tax (CGT): The CGT allowance for this tax year is £11,100. If you do not use the allowance it can not be carried forward, so it may make sense to stagger the sale of some investments over 2 or more years, if you can. Pensions: If you pay tax at 40% then any pension contribution will attract tax relief at 40% i.e. if you put £60 into a pension fund then the government will add another £40, giving you a 67% return. Even for a basic tax payer the government will add £12.50 for every £50 you contribute, a return of 25%. Nowhere else can you get a guaranteed return at this level.

VILLAGE PEOPLE

: r e t s F Amy

A Girl and her Golf

Balerno High School pupil Amy Foster (17) has a passion for golf! In 2015 she reduced her handicap from 27 to 14 and was named “Most Improved Player” by Midlothian County Ladies’ Golf Association (Junior Girls’ Division). Her mum, dad and one of her two brothers are also golfers. When both of your parents golf, it’s not hard to imagine that you might get the bug too. “I was given some golf clubs when I was about 10,” says Amy Foster. “Mum and Dad took me out with them and showed me where to place my feet, how to align myself and how to swing.” In August 2013 Amy joined the Dalmahoy Golf Club. “They gave me the highest handicap, 36,” she says. Amy practised over the winter and competed. She received good scores, and her handicap was cut to 31. By the end of the 2014 season (April-October) it had dropped to 27, and by the end of 2015 to just 14, a handicap she maintained in 2016. “When I joined the Dalmahoy, I was the only girl,” Amy comments. “And in this area there are still not many girls that play golf. I think it’s important that we have older role models to learn from and look up to.” Amy volunteers with “Club Golf”, a junior Scottish coaching programme

that helps those aged 7-12 gain the fundamentals of the game. “At Ratho Park I teach girls the basic skills,” she explains. “I see it as a way to give something back, as a lot of people have helped me. When these girlsare my age, they will remember that an older girl taught them. I was coached entirely by adults.” Much of Amy’s coaching was through Midlothian County Girls’ Golf Association. The MCGGA has about 60 members, aged 8-19, who receive up to three hours of

Next year will be my last as a junior... So I have to beat my brother Gregor! coaching per month from the Ladies’ Association. Because it is subsidised, it is offered at a very reasonable rate. Members get the opportunity to play in various competitions. In 2016 Amy won the Girls’ Spring Meeting, a Junior Girls’ event, at Liberton Golf Club. “I’m very competitive,” she says, “and when I win, it makes me feel good. But it’s not all about winning. I’ve had a lot of help from others, and I know

that much of my success is because of the help I have received. My family are a great support. Then there are the lady golfers who are happy to offer me a game, even though I am young. And I really appreciate all the lifts people have given me to and from competitions.” Amy enjoys singing, playing her violin and keeping fit, and says church is an important part of her life. When she leaves high school she plans to do business management at university. Will she continue golfing? I think so. “Next year will be my last one as a junior,” she says. “So I have to beat my brother Gregor!”

WALK

BY KAREN MURRAY

In the process of looking for a new place to stretch the legs, I came across an article from the Woodland Trust about relatively new woodland, planted as Scotland’s First World War Centenary Wood.

first colourful display of wild flowers made an appearance in 2015. This display gets better each year. The Woodland Trust aims for this wood to become a haven for local wildlife, including insects, goldfinches and pipistrelle bats and it will link up pockets of existing woodland, creating new wildlife corridors.

Nestled in the Pentland Hills, Dreghorn Woods was officially opened in 2015. Owned by the Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO), it’s one of four large areas of woodland being created through the First World War Centenary Woods Project. It includes a stone structure created as a space to rest, reflect and remember those who lived through the First World War. Eventually more than 50,000 native trees will be planted in the Pentland Hills to create a living, growing memorial.

The site for the woodland is steeped in military history and has been used as a training ground for over 100 years. During WWI many troops had their first experience of trenches on this mock battlefield. One of them was Captain William

A grove of rowan trees within the woods is dedicated to the hundreds of soldiers from Leith who died in the Quintinshill Rail Disaster. Rowan, known in folklore as the traveller’s tree, was chosen to also remember those who never returned from the long journey from Scotland to the front lines. People from the local community have been helping to sow five acres of wildflowers and plant native trees including rowan, cherry, birch and Scots pine. Several thousand trees have already been planted and the 52 | KONECT BALERNO

Ewart Gladstone-Millar. His daughter Lynne Gladstone-Millar is a local historian who successfully campaigned to preserve the training trenches. His first posting was to Mortonhall and every day the soldiers marched to the training trenches in the Dreghorn Woods to prepare themselves for France.

Lynne remembers her father saying: “There was a very specialised kind of mud there. We called it Dreghorn Sludge. It caked on to your kilt so that the pleats lacerated your knees like knives.” That sludge is now nurturing the new trees that have been planted. The new trees include an avenue of 50 wild service trees, planted to provide an annual flash of red during autumn when visitors can embrace the views across the city from the ‘Rest and Reflect’ stone seating area. The avenue is known as ‘The Weir Todd Walk’ and is dedicated to Euro Millions winner Chris Weir’s husband Colin Weir’s grandfathers who served in the First World War, and his father who served in the Second World War. Chris said: “William, Jimmy and James were all very public spirited and wanted to be in the service of their country. The Weir Todd Walk is dedicated to their memory and is a place for all to enjoy, reflecting on the service of many Scots servicemen.” Dreghorn Woods is situated near the Dreghorn Barracks so you might come across a group of soldiers of the 2nd Battalion Royal Regiment Scotland, marching with rather scary looking guns! Don’t worry – the guns aren’t loaded, but you may just need to skip out of the way rather promptly. Don’t let that put you off – anyone is welcome to wander

these woods. Dreghorn Wood is only a small part of this vast arena. It makes for a compact walk and will stretch the legs but if you have the inclination and equipment you could walk to the Castlelaw Hill Fort over the other side of the hills. There are no waymarked routes but there is a map of the area at the entrance to the wood.

HOW TO GET THERE: Take the exit for Dreghorn off the A720 city bypass. If you are going East cross over the bypass and then take the sliproad down to join the bypass again exiting to the left. There is a barrier but if your car is too high (like mine) you can park before the barrier and walk in. Coming from the East simply take the Dreghorn Link slip and then the first left to the same place. There is a car park and access to the woods. Walking along a tarmac road you will soon see the map of the area and a gate to your left giving to access to the Pentland Hills.

FOOD & DRINK

Outside Catering Food Creations can provide a range of outdoor catering, supplying not only the food but staff and an outdoor bar.

February is a strange month for food. There are no traditional celebrations with special food to look forward to and the new harvests of spring feel miles away. The weather can be cold and the days still seem short; a time when comfort food is needed.

From simple buffets for small groups all the way to multi-course meals for large numbers, we are happy to work with you to provide the perfect catering solution. Delivered to your chosen venue or your own home, we will work with you on menus to impress, and help you to deliver an enviable experience.

Even in the 16th century the British had a poor reputation for food with French cooks who thought we used too much butter on our vegetables. Fine words count for little but before potatoes became our staple the root veg selection was limited and all of them were the better for some buttering up...flattery.

So we need to look to our roots. Carrots, celeriac, swedes, Jerusalem artichokes, beetroot, sweet potatoes, parsnips and spuds. There are also winter leaves to enjoy such as leeks, chicory and onions and, in neither category, butternut squash. All these can be roasted; indeed a mixture of root vegetables drizzled with oil and a little thyme make a perfect accompaniment to any grilled, baked or roast meat. If there are any leftovers they can become a warming lunchtime soup with the addition of a fried onion and stock from a cube and perhaps some red lentils. Layering up thin sliced root veg and cooking them in a shallow dish in the oven is another good way to enjoy them. Butter, milk, cream, orange juice or stock will each give a different result. Good seasoning with black pepper, salt and herbs such as rosemary, thyme, lemongrass or ginger make the gratin more interesting. Bread crumbs mixed with a little strong cheese scattered on top will give a crunchy texture to the finished dish. Some good combinations are:- Sweet potato and potato with milk and cayenne; carrots and parsnips with stock, parsley and ginger; beetroot with orange juice and thyme; potato, cooking apple and fried onion with dripping or butter; celeriac, black pepper, lemongrass

BY ANNE PINKERTON

we need to look to our

and creamy milk. And not to be left out, Bubble and Squeak -mash, cabbage or any other green leaves. All these need to be baked in the oven at 160oC for about 40 minutes. You can cheat slightly by pre heating the sliced veg for a few minutes in boiling water, draining well and then layering them as you please. Butternut squash was recently being sold sliced thin and suggested as a substitute for lasagne. Since it was reduced I bought it and tried it, layered up with spinach in a nutmeg white sauce. This is a good way to use this lovely squash. Leeks or chicory are good blanched, baked in a good cheese or béchamel sauce and eaten for super with a baked potato. If you wrap either veg in a slice of ham and then bake it you have a more substantial meal. 30 to 40 minutes in a hot oven is needed. Ambrose Heath, the great early 20th century food writer, has this dish in his chapter for February, which is also good with root vegetables. RECIPE

Gammon baked in milk • 6 gammon rashers (1 per person) brought to a gentle boil for 10 minutes in water (Total weight about 850gm) • Teacup (half a mug full) bread crumbs • 3 level teaspoons brown sugar • Teaspoon mustard • Teaspoon Worcester sauce • 1 yolk of egg • Milk

atin Gcoldrweather comfort food

Butter a shallow baking dish. Lay the dried gammon in and cover with a paste made from all the other ingredients except the milk. Then add enough milk to not quite cover the meat. Bake at 150oC for 3545 minutes. Top up the milk if it looks to becoming dry. This is good with mashed potatoes with the zest and juice of an orange added. If you need more inspiration for roots there are dozens of recipes for their use in breads, patties, chutney, scones, jam, pickles, tarts and puddings. And there is always Gardener’s Pie… Shepherd’s Pie without the meat.
