elcome to the first edition of Konect for 2018 (we didn’t publish a January issue). I’ve been looking a little into the history of the namesake of one of Edinburgh’s universities this month – if you have anything to do with Napier University you may be interested in the story of John Napier, see pages 8-9. Our Village People column writer Suzanne interviewed local councillor Sue Webber of Juniper Green – the only councillor in Edinburgh who both grew up in and currently lives in their constituency. As always, don’t hesitate to get in touch if you know someone we can celebrate in the Village People column, a local charity or other interesting story - we’re looking forward to another year celebrating all things local!

LOCAL HISTORY
If your home was garrisoned by soldiers and under threat of bombardment, you might pick somewhere else to get married. But 22 year old John Napier, namesake of Edinbugh Napier University, signed his wedding contract with his 16 year old bride at home in Merchiston Tower in just those circumstances in April 1572. The hobbyist mathematician and seventh Laird of Merchiston would probably have preferred to be remembered for his works of theology. He changed the world, but not in the way he imagined - his invention of logarithms is the work for which he is most celebrated.
John and his new wife moved to Gartness Castle (on the western edge of Stirlingshire today). He took the task of running the Napier estates very seriously. He was known in Edinburgh as “Marvellous Merchiston” as he was always working on ideas to improve productivity. He experimented with salt fertiliser, invented an apparatus to remove water from flooded coal pits, and built land surveyancing devices. Part of the inheritance was the title of the King’s Poulterer, and the “Pultrielands” at Dean Village - a plot of land for raising poultry to be supplied to the king on request.
John Napier was born at Merchiston Tower (now one of Edinburgh Napier University’s campuses) in 1550. We don’t know what he studied but he went to the University of St Andrews at the age of 13. There is no record of him graduating from there; he most likely finished his education in Europe, arriving back in 1571, aged 21, when Scotland was in the But Napier considered himself first and foremost a grip of a civil war in which his family was reluctantly theologian. The Reformation in Scotland was young, involved. For Napier, though, mathematics was a hobby, a means to an end that he worked on as and when he had time besides his theological work. The Statistical Account of 1795 says: “Adjoining the mill at Gartness are the remains of an old house in which John Napier of Merchiston, Inventor of Logarithms, resided a great part of his time (some years) when he was making his calculations. It is reported that the noise of the cascade, being constant, never gave him uneasiness, but that the clack of the mill, which was only occasional, greatly disturbed his thoughts. He was therefore, when in deep study, sometimes under the necessity of desiring the miller to stop the mill that the train of his ideas might not be interrupted.” Perhaps unsurprisingly he cut an eccentric figure. The Statistical Account also records he “used frequently to walk out in his nightgown and cap. This, with some things which to the vulgar appear rather odd, fixed on him the character of a warlock.” But stories of his supposedly magic powers have been

VILLAGE PEOPLE
Susan Webber:
The queen of time management Councillor Susan Webber represents the Pentland Hills ward alongside fellow Conservative Councillor Graeme Bruce. A local, she attended Juniper Green Primary School and Currie High School before studying biochemistry at Edinburgh University. Susan Webber became a Councillor as a result of the local elections last May. She knows and loves her community. As a girl Sue lived in Baberton and Currie, and now she lives in Juniper Green. “I am the only Councillor in Edinburgh who both grew up in and currently lives in their constituency,” she says. She is well-known in the area, which is a real benefit. Her dad was a policeman and also Captain of the 65th Boys’ Brigade for more than 20 years. Her mum has always been involved in the community too. In school Sue developed an interest in science and enjoyed playing badminton and hockey She continued playing hockey at university, and is currently serving as President of East District Hockey. Injuries led her to switch to umpiring but now, due to a very full diary, sport has had to take a backseat. Sue thought she would follow in her dad’s footsteps and join the police, but she couldn’t do enough press ups to qualify. She then worked as a temp, and was sent to Ethicon in Livingston, the world’s largest global health care company. There she eventually landed a permanent job in sales and marketing. Being made redundant in 2012 was not part of her plan, but it gave Sue another opportunity to consider what she really wanted to do, leading to her current role in local government. She also set up her own company, MEDinburgh, and through it she markets and sells medical equipment for small 18 | KONECT BALERNO

businesses into NHS and Private Hospitals.
A bit of juggling is required to meet her responsibilities as a Councillor and run her business, but Sue is the queen of time management. “I used to use electronic diaries,” she comments, “but I’ve gone back to paper diaries to help me organise my life: Councillor, business and personal.” She says there are three strings to a Councillor’s bow. The first is the formal Council element. “The Labour/SNP coalition present papers, and those of us in Opposition can make amendments or motions on these. People can see their local Councillors in action by watching the live webcast monthly on a Thursday.” There are also various committees, and Sue is a member of the Governance, Risk and Best Value Committee and the Edinburgh Integration Joint Board (Health and Social Care). Finally, there is the constituency work, her passion. Sue says she is committed to her local community, and that’s about to be put to the test. On the day I interviewed her news broke about the planned closure of Currie High School. My guess is that Sue is about to get even busier. The Village People column is contributed by Suzanne Green. Suzanne, a freelance writer/ editor, lives in Balerno and writes regularly for Konect. She is married to Andy and they have two adult daughters.

THOUGHT FOR THE MONTH
Marriage and Mental Health One in four of us will experience a mental health problem at some time in our lives, which makes it very likely that most marriages will have to face up to these issues. Getting through this together is not easy, but it does not seem that the mental illness of one partner necessarily leads to separation or divorce. Rather working though the issues together often strengthens the relationship. Here are some tips that make a difference: Communication: face and learn about the issues together. Seeing a GP together is an essential first step. The more insight you have the better. Encourage the ‘ill’ partner as they develop understanding into how mental health issues affect them and urge them to seek help when they struggle to motivate themselves.
CLEARVUE OPTICIANS VISION HEALTH CARE
Be careful that the ‘well’ partner doesn’t become a ‘therapist’. This can change the balance of a marriage relationship and can result in the ‘well’ partner becoming resentful and exhausted. Having a deep emotional connection with another person provides individuals with social support, coping resources, a sense of purpose and meaning in life, an important social identity and feelings of ‘mattering’ which are important for the maintenance of mental health. Mental illness may pose a challenge to your marriage, but your marriage will pose a stronger challenge to the mental health issue! HOME IMPROVEMENT
February can be a dreich month, a good time to pay attention to your lighting. Could a quick update make it bright where necessary, cosy where wanted and as fashion-forward as anyone could desire? Brighten up your lighting • Using just one central pendant to illuminate a room creates a flat light with dark corners, making the space seem dull and small. If you are renovating, now’s the time to add wall lights, install some additional ceiling lights, or include some track lighting in cornices or bookcases. • To improve a boring lighting scheme quickly and easily, add extra lights at different heights – a table lamp in the corner, a floor lamp in another, maybe a clip light attached to a shelf. The aim is to create layers of light that come from different directions, and that you can adjust to suit your mood or the way you’re using the room. • Think about bulbs – save money by changing to LEDs, which last for years and are very cheap to run. How ‘warm’ or ‘cool’ they are is marked in kelvins - look for around 2,700K for a pleasant indoor light. Dimmer switches give flexibility to your lighting, but they’re not always compatible with LEDs, so check with your electrician. • ‘Smart’ lighting is the way to go – use a remote control or an app on your phone to dim your lights, switch them on and off or even change their colours.
Light up your winter MAIN IMAGE: Illuminate a corner of your living room – and provide a snuggly spot for curling up with a good book – by swapping a tired old floor lamp for a good-looking, on-trend new one. Slam Dunk floor lamp in antique brass, £175, Loaf.
ABOVE: Smart lighting systems are easy to use and surprisingly affordable. Tradfri dimming kit, from £15, PS 2017 Table Lamp, £25; both Ikea.

MONEY MATTERS
THE EFFECTS OF INFLATION Inflation is the rate of change in the purchasing power of money over time. How do we measure inflation? The Office for National Statistics (ONS) is an office of parliament charged with measuring inflation over time. The two main measures of inflation are the Retail Price Index (RPI) and the Consumer Price Index (CPI). The two indexes are very similar, but CPI does not include things like mortgage interest and council tax. They are based on the average spending patterns for UK households, using a “basket” of hundreds of goods and services that includes everything from bread to petrol. What does this mean to me? The effect of inflation over time has the potential
28 | KONECT BALERNO
to erode returns. For example, if inflation is on average 2.5% per year, a basket of goods costing £100 today would cost about £128 in 10 years. While cash deposit accounts have traditionally been considered a safer place to store money than the stock market, they still face the risk of inflation. In recent years savings returns have been very low and have not kept pace with inflation, whereas Stock Market returns have far outstripped inflation, What can I do? The only solution is to consider accepting some risk and transferring a proportion of cash into a well diversified investment portfolio at a suitable level of risk. Always seek appropriate financial advice before investing your money. The monthly Money Matters column is contributed by Personal Money Management. This month’s piece written by Dr P M Marshall.

WALK
The Tough 10k … h g u o t o s e b t ’ n need As I write this the Pentlands are covered in a light dusting of snow - pretty to look at from a distance, but I’m very glad they weren’t like that when I took part in the Cancer Research Tough 10k at the beginning of November. This challenge, which I was gently persuaded to join by my boxercising pals, took me out of my comfort zone but at the same time, got me out in the hills on a Sunday morning. By heading out early we got the best of the day, saw some really beautiful sunrises. The views made the hard work of running worth the effort, the money raised for Cancer Research was all the reward required; the sense of achievement a wonderful added bonus. However, the best thing about it was the fact that I have now discovered a new walking route - a circular route in the Pentland Hills that fits in with the time I have and where I won’t wander off course. The Tough 10k was the perfect route. The ascent is very steep and tough but the descent is also fairly steep and precarious in muddy weather. I’ve modified it slightly to make the descent a little less steep at the end and I will now be making this one of my new walking routes. 10k is a great distance and I reckon will take around 2 to 2.5 hours at a brisk pace. The terrain is rough, a mixture of gravel track, grass and rather slim sheep tracks. It can be muddy, and it’s uneven underfoot, but take it easy and it is no problem. 48 | KONECT BALERNO
The route begins at the car park at Bonaly. Find the Outdoor Centre and a little way past that you will see the car park area on the right hand side with a gate and stile for the beginning of the path. It is a bit of a difficult start as you begin by going steeply uphill for a good kilometre before you go through another gate and the path starts to level out a little. Still heading upward along a gravel path, you will see a reservoir on the right and then you’ll come to another gate. Through this and it is a turn to the right where the path then resembles more of a sheep trail. It can be muddy and undulating with a few puddles to negotiate but the views start to open up ahead of you with Glencorse reservoir coming into view, the hills beyond and the Scots pines. The path twists this way and that and there are drainage bridges peppered along the way but it is fairly obvious where to go. A bridge over a burn takes you a little uphill but generally the route is fairly level at this point. It then heads downhill toward the reservoir. The narrow path comes out on to a wider path, turn left and then down through the gate ahead. Take a left here with the reservoir on your right and you are on that tarmac road for a few hundred meters.
Be prepared though, as you are about to head uphill again. You will see a sign for Castle Law hillfort on the left. Go through the gate and head up the fairly narrow and very steep track. It is tough going but quite short. At the top, it is through another gate and turn left. You are then heading along the side of the hills on a grassy path with the reservoir down to your left. The path eventually splits and you take the left hand fork which will take you around the side of the hill. The path meanders up and down and can be quite challenging before eventually going upwards again. You will be rewarded though – once you reach the top, you will see a tarmac road again. Turn left and over the cattle grid; follow the road along until you see a crossroads. You will see a sign for Bonaly down to the left so follow that and over the stile at the bottom of short hill. There are two paths ahead. Take the lower path to the right and walk around the side of the hill. You will now get views of the Bridges and over the Forth to Fife on your right hand side as you move along the side of the hill. Again you will come to a fork and you can take either one as they both end up at the same point. However, the best option for a more even path underfoot is to take the left hand fork and go around the other side of the hill. The path is quite grassy but takes you slowly around and down the hill. It then heads off to the left and eventually brings you back to the top of the steep track you first walked up. When you see the gate, go right and through it and then retrace your steps back down the hill to the car park. A perfect circular route with plenty of different terrain to challenge and wonderful views along the way makes this walk ideal for a weekend afternoon. Decent footwear is required and if you are going to tackle it in winter remember warm outdoor clothing. The path is fairly easy to follow but if fog descends it could be easy to get lost so check the weather forecast before you go and be prepared! I am certainly going to walk it on a more regular basis and make sure I enjoy those Sunday mornings up in the hills. The walk feature is contributed by Karen Murray. Karen is passionate about walking in the great outdoors having been bought up to love walking by her father (still hillwalking in his 80s)

Serve with salad and herb yoghurt dressing
This is a great recipe for meat-free Monday - or any other day of the week! Harissa paste is a fiery hot blend of spices from North Africa sold near the dried herbs in most large supermarkets. If unavailable, replace with 2 tsp curry paste or sun-dried tomato puree.
Ingredients: 1 tbsp olive oil 1 onion, peeled and chopped 2 carrots, peeled and grated 1tsp harissa paste 400g can cannellini beans, drained 400g can red kidney beans, drained 3 tbsp freshly chopped mint 100g fresh wholemeal breadcrumbs Vegetable oil for shallow frying Salad and herb yoghurt dressing, to serve (see TIP)
Makes 15 Ready in 35 minutes, plus chilling time 50 | KONECT BALERNO
Method: 1. Heat the olive oil in a frying pan, add the onion and fry for 5 minutes until softened. Cool for 5 minutes then place in a food processor with the carrots, harissa paste, beans, mint and breadcrumbs. 2. Season well with salt and freshly ground black pepper and process for about 30 seconds until well blended. Shape the mixture into 15 small round patties. Cover and chill for 30 minutes. 3. Shallow fry the patties in hot vegetable oil for 2-3 minutes on each side until golden brown. Drain on kitchen paper then serve with salad and dressing.
Tip: Serve these patties with dark green salad leaves such as baby spinach and watercress with chunks of cooked beetroot. For a quick herb dressing, stir lemon juice and freshly chopped mint into natural yoghurt and season to taste.

LOCAL HISTORY
From Currie to
Up, always up. Currie lad Dougal Haston went from rambling around the Pentland Hills to being one of the first British climbers to conquer Everest, choosing a route up the South West face that had never been climbed before, and has not been attempted since. Born in Currie in 1940 Dougal Haston had the urge to climb from a young age, and along with his friends he developed his skills as a boy climbing on the railway embankments and bridges in Currie. Exuberance turned to childhood mischief at times, such as climbing to the top of Currie Kirk and hanging items from the top, including women’s underwear. Haston climbed his first serious rock aged 14 in 1954 – Curved Ridge at Glencoe and 1956, while a pupil at West Calder High School, he joined the Edinburgh J.M.C.S. (Junior Mountaineering Club of Scotland). He met Robin C Smith of Colinton, under whose
54 | KONECT BALERNO
guidance Haston and some close companions climbed Glencoe including a bad-weather ascent of the difficult Revelation route. Haston had a thirst for climbing in poor weather where the challenges and the risks are so much greater. During his four years at Edinburgh University he climbed intensively across Scotland, the Lake District and the Alps, often making winter ascents.
• Haston’s exploits away from the climbing routes were as notorious as his feats of mountaineering were legendary. He was renown for drinking, fighting, stealing and risky climbs. On one tragic occasion, he was drunkdriving and ploughed into three young men at Glencoe, seriously injuring two and killing the third. He was charged with a number of offences, convicted and jailed in Barlinnie (Glasgow) for 2 months In 1964 Haston moved away from Scotland to make a new home in Leysin, Switzerland. There, his close friend John Harlin ran the International School of Mountaineering, and it was from here that Haston planned and executed his most spectacular expeditions, while working as a mountain guide. The first of these was a perilous attempt on the Direct route up Eiger, in winter. Together with John Harlin, he lead a team in the glare of international media in 1966, all the more intense due to a team of Germans attempting the same route at the same time. In scenes of high drama John Harlin died on the ascent as a result of a broken rope, while Haston and four of the Germans made the summit, severely frostbitten. This was the first direct ascent of the North Face and is a regarded as a climbing classic, told by Haston in his book Eiger Direct. No wonder Clint Eastwood hired him in 1969 as advisor on the film ‘The Eiger Sanction’. Haston was now a professional mountaineer, and replaced John Harlin as head of the Mountaineering School. His financial model was to conduct the most spectacular climbing events possible to attract media attention, which could be turned into funding for more ascents. In this way Haston continued to lead a life on the edge. In 1970 he scaled the world’s most dangerous mountains at Annapurna, Nepal.
Haston’s first two attempts on Everest in 1971 and 1972, led by Chris Bonnington, were defeated, both being on the hitherto unconquered Southwest Face, and the latter in the treacherous post-monsoon weather. In 1975 in a successful expedition again led by Chris Bonnington, he reached the summit in the company of Doug Scott, a team member dying on the summit ridge. Haston and Scott had to spend the night following their summit sheltering in a hand-dug snow cave at the South Summit. This route has never been attempted again, and the Southwest Face is recognised as the most difficult. Haston continued climbing after his Everest victory. Mountains were his domain, until when skiing alone off piste in La Riondaz, Leysin on 17th January 1977, he was killed by an avalanche - strangled by the polka dot scarf he liked to wear. He is commemorated in Currie by a plaque.

VISIT WEST LOTHIAN
This month we have everything from ballet to comedy so even if you don’t have a valentine this year you’ll be sure to still be in love… with West Lothian.
CROSSWORD
A night at the theatre is hard to beat but a night at the theatre with Ballet West might just do it! Bringing the story of Giselle live to the stage at Howden Park Centre you will witness the story of a peasant girl named Giselle, who dies of a broken heart after discovering her lover is betrothed to another. This is a world class production that will be sure to pull on your heart strings. Showing on the 7th at 19:30pm. On Saturday the 10th head on down to Linlithgow Peel for a Wetland Wildlife Wander. This is certain to be a fun filled day of exploring and learning. You will tour the Peel with an incredibly knowledgeable guide as you stroll around this historic and beautiful area.

Now we have two options, one for those with a Valentine’s date and for those without a date this February 14th. For those who will be sharing an evening with a loved one then why not check out one of Linlithgow’s magnificent restaurants? With a wide range of high end and award winning establishments to choose from you won’t be short for choice in this Royal Burgh. Alternatively if you don’t have a date then head on down to Howden Park Centre to witness the comedy genius that is Jimeoin. His UK tour has been a smash hit and we are certain you will be bent double with laughter. Whatever you decide to get up to this February we hope you spend it in West Lothian.

COMMUNITY
t u c r i a h for a good cause a
If you’ve got long hair and are thinking about getting it cut, consider donating it for a wig for children and young adults who have lost their own hair through cancer. Fourteen year old Currie High School pupil Hannah Pfeiffer is keen to raise awareness of Little Princess Trust, a charity that provides free real hair wigs to children who have lost their own hair through cancer treatment or other illnesses. Hannah came across Little Princess Trust on the internet last year, and thought one day she would like to donate her long hair. The charity was set up in 2006 in England by the parents and friends of the original “Little Princess,” who sadly passed away from a Wilms tumour. Losing her hair during treatment was very traumatic, and she very much enjoyed wearing
her wig - although at that time finding quality wigs for children was very difficult. Since its inception, the charity has now helped thousands of children. Whilst at a cancer charity function in Currie last autumn, Hannah decided to go ahead Hannah with Rod of Mane and arrange to get her Attraction, Juniper Green hair cut in, to help a child cope that little bit better with cancer treatment. So in December, she paid a visit to Mane Attraction in Juniper Green, and two long plaits were soon on their way to the wig makers via Little Princess Trust. So if you’re thinking of lopping off your long locks this year, do consider donating them instead of binning them. Visit www.littleprincesses.org.uk for more information and instructions on how to donate your hair.

FRIDAY 9TH MARCH BABERTON MAINS HISTORY WEBSITE LAUNCH Juniper Green Village Hall, 8pm Some of you will recall that the Baberton Mains History project produced a popular booklet about their findings in 2014. There was also collaboration with the pupuls of Juniper Green Primary School and the history of the area was sticthed into a quilt which still hangs proudly in the school.
SOLUTION TO DECEMBER CROSSWORD
Now, the team of researchers are ready to launch the website which highlights the findings in a different medium. The website launch will be in Juniper Green Village Hall on Friday 9 March at 8pm. There will be a chance to see the structure of the website, view some of the images and marvel at the interactive map of the area. Juniper Green and Baberton Mains Community Council warmly invite you to this event where there will also be a chance to update the other recent activities of the CC including the resilience work, the financial services research and the traffic survey on the A70.
