Riccarton House By James Thomson

nce the centre of the lands of Richardtoun, Riccarton House was demolished in 1956 and the surrounding 380 acres of parkland gifted in 1966 to Heriot-Watt University, with work beginning 3 years later on the modern campus that we now know. So what are the stories of the original house ? By 1510 a substantial fortified tower had been built by the Wardlaw family, who held Riccarton as tenants of the crown. A wealthy family of Edinburgh lawyers, the Craigs, then bought the property in 1610, extending the tower in 1621 to create a fashionable home. The Craigs at that time were certainly men of letters and no doubt would to some extent approve of the fact that today, on the original site of the house, sits the university library. The first Craig on the scene was Thomas (1538 - 1608), who bought Riccarton Mains Farm. Thomas was both a jurist and a poet. His first poem, an epithalamium, was in honour of the marriage of Mary, Queen of Scots, and Darnley, and appeared in 1565. For those of you struggling to recognise what exactly an epithalamium is, it is a poem written specifically for the bride on the way to her marital chamber. In his capacity as a jurist (a professional who studies, develops, applies, or otherwise deals with the law) Thomas’s only work published in his life time was a treatise to assimilate the laws of England and Scotland, which , instead of the intended, ended up being an important factor in building up and solidifying the law of Scotland into a separate system. Thomas died shortly after buying Riccarton Mains Farm and it was his son, Lewis,

1) who bought the main house 2 years later, improving and extending it a year before he died in 1622. Lewis Craig, 2nd of Riccarton, had by then became a judge and a Lord of Session with the title Lord Wrightslands. There followed 3 further generations of Craig’s at Riccarton but before the estate passed through the female line we should pause on the final male line, the generous bachelor brothers Thomas and Robert Craig known as The Laird and The Commissary Judge. They lived together for almost 60 years at 91 Princes Street in a semi-reclusive and parsimonious manner, each with their own man servant, who was always in attendance, but succumbed to great generosity when returning to Riccarton. Thomas invested in estate improvements and lavish gifts to his tenants at New Year. He lived to 85 at which point his younger brother Robert took over, living until he was 93. Their frugal habits at No 91 appear to have come full circle as where the house once stood is now a Primark Store. Robert also took the cautionary measure of keeping another fully staffed house in Lasswade, just in case a family feud should occur between the brothers. As one commentator put it at the time, “ he made provision for a possible rupture and permanent estrangement

by maintaining for long a fully equipped home, servants being constantly retained to fire and air the rooms that he might resort thither on a moments notice should the anticipated separation be forced on him ” He never did and when his brother passed away only then did he instruct his heir, “now James you may sell the house at Lasswade”

Great Depression, and in 1934 founded the Old War Horse Memorial Hospital in Cairo, where she had been stationed with her husband for 4 years.

The female line descended through to a younger son, James, of the Gibson family from Durie House near Leven in Fife who changed his name in 1818 to Gibson-Craig and who inherited from his cousin Robert, The Commissary Judge; we now enter over a hundred years of the Gibson-Craig family at Riccarton. The original Craigs had done much to improve the Riccarton estate, enclosing land and planting shelter belts that brought prosperity to the estate and it’s tenants. In 1827 James commissioned William Burn to substantially remodel Riccarton’s main house and policies in the latest Scottish Baronial Style; by 1831 he had become Sir James Gibson-Craig of Riccarton. In the end both world wars took their toll on the house and family; the 4th baronet was killed in action in France in 1914 and his younger brother, the 5th baronet, died childless from a motoring accident. Not all was lost though for the Gibson-Craig legacy. Their first cousin Dorothy Gibson-Craig, whose father was raised at Riccarton, made something quite remarkable from the war effort – perhaps more than the fine bricks and mortar of her fathers ancestral home. While her younger brother did inherit the baronetcy, but not the Riccarton estates, Dorothy’s path was the most illustrious of all the Craig dynasty . She became the founder of the largest equine charity in the world , the Brooke Hospital for Animals (she married Brigadier Geoffrey Brooke). She started her endeavours in the depths of the

Meanwhile, back home, her fathers ancestral home became the battle HQ of Scottish Command in 1939, then a resettlement camp and finally, from 1947 to 1954, the HQ of the Royal Artillery’s 3rd Anti-aircraft group. Like many large houses that were requisitioned by the army, Riccarton House was not properly maintained over this period and it was demolished in 1956 as it had become structurally unsound. The estate was later sold to Midlothian County Council who finally gifted it to Heriot Watt University in 1966. 2)

The Hills are Alive! By David Syme

n a recent walk in the Pentlands with my wife I met plenty of other recreational users of these fine hills. The weather was good, the views superb, and everyone we greeted smiled as if to say: “Aren’t we lucky to have this on our doorstep”.

I offered my wife a shortcut to the right. When she turned it down I knew that today this walk was a winner! The path branched, but we kept to the higher one which led to a stand of fir trees. Bonaly Reservoir lay behind these trees, and where the path turned to the right we hopped over a stile to head straight for the water. The reservoir was full and the waterside path flooded, so we had to pick our way through the heathery clumps to the dam wall. Resting at the far end of the dam was a group of three boys and two girls on a Duke of Edinburgh expedition, laden with camping gear and chatting happily together.

We set off from Harlaw car-park in Balerno at 10am and took the path heading for the saddle between Harbour Hill and Bell’s Hill. This is a great path! The angle is never steep, and the views over to the Ochills and Fife on a good day make the steady climb worthwhile. A cool easterly wind was blowing in our faces, but the well-made path was mainly dry. Several cyclists passed us; the path is good for them, too, and from Harlaw they can cross to Flotterstone or return to Harlaw by way of Glencorse and Loganlea Reservoirs. Just before we reached the kissing gate where the path descends the Maiden’s Cleugh we turned left onto a narrow path which worked its way round Harbour Hill, climbing gently. Two people with a dog strode ahead of us, silhouetted against a sky of blue and white. At one point they stopped for a passionate hug – it was that kind of day. Every step brought more of Edinburgh into view, and the challenge of identifying landmarks took the tiredness out of the legs. Wester Hailes housing

We turned right to take the path which descends into the Phantom’s Cleugh. Some long-distance runners came up towards us, taking short rhythmical steps and carrying water bottles, tiny backpacks and exotic headgear. Who wants to run an urban marathon when you can do 26 miles or more in the Pentlands?

Ahead we could see a corner of Glencorse Reservoir, but we veered off to the right so as not to lose height. Following sheep tracks we held our height until the path climbing from the reservoir reached us just short of the kissing gate. Here we met a lass leading a heavy horse. “He’s had enough of this!” She said as they clattered downhill. A few moments later we watched anxiously as a cyclist sped down after them, but they had moved off the path and all went well. At the gate we paused to admire the view. Ben Vorlich and Ben Lomond were just visible to the west, Benarty Hill and the Lomonds in the east. A man with binoculars took the path towards Bell’s Hill, perhaps a bird watcher looking for the birds of prey that live up near Loganlea? A man and a young lad were coming down from the summit of Harbour Hill as we walked on. We chatted to an elderly man with two poles who was coming up towards us, and made the usual remark about the fine weather. “Snow is forecast” he joked. He looked

the kind of chap who would not mind a bit of June snow. Halfway down the man and boy overtook us at speed. “Lunch is on the table!” The man shouted as they loped down the path. We reached our car at 12.30 after an exhilarating walk. If we had been seeking peace and solitude on the walk we could have been disappointed, but we were delighted to have shared the morning with so many others who could take pleasure in the Pentlands in their own way. We are indeed lucky to have these hills.

How to avoid Inheritance Tax By Personal Money Management What is Inheritance Tax? (IHT)

Put simply, Inheritance Tax is a tax on everything you own which becomes payable on your estate when you die. Your assets may be more extensive than you think. They would include your own home and any other property that you own, your investments, insurance policies and gifts you have made especially if you still benefit from them.

It was during the summer holidays last year, when the future after-school care provision in the village was uncertain, that Suzie’s plans for KidsInsight took shape. As many parents worried about what they would do the following term, Suzie began to think through the possibilities. She realised she had the skills, vision and enthusiasm to provide parents with a new alternative. Suzie’s two older children are still at primary school, and her youngest is only one and a half, so she has regularly needed after-school child care herself.

Children will be using their imaginations, playing and creating, often around a theme that they will help to choose. And there will be lots of exciting activities and games! Learn to Talk Dog

ogs communicate with postures, expressions and sounds. It’s a language that they learn from the day they are born. We need to learn to speak ‘dog’ so we can understand what our pooch is saying. Look at your dog’s overall posture. Are they standing tall and proud or are they slinking low to the ground to make themselves look smaller? Look at the tail position - a high tail is confident or wary, a low tail shows a scared or timid dog. A wagging tail is simply a sign of heightened emotion, not necessarily happiness! Look at your dog’s face. Is it wrinkled into a frown, are the eyes wide open and are the ears pulled back flat? All three signs indicate a fearful dog. Pricked forward facing ears, a hard stare and

teeth on show mean back off NOW. Always take heed of the signs and take steps to make your dog feel safer. Many signs of fear are at the lower end of what behaviourists call a ladder of aggression. If you ignore the less obvious signs or worse still punish a dog for growling or snapping, the next time your dog will have no choice but to escalate their behaviour. That’s when bites happen. Very few dogs ever bite out of the blue, usually they have done their utmost to communicate that they feel threatened. So watch your dog closely, learn to recognise their own body language cues and don’t put them into uncomfortable situations. West Lothian Young Carer’s Project

here are many children and young people in West Lothian whose lives are dominated by the fact that they care for a member of their family who is sick or disabled, has a mental health problem or is affected by drugs or alcohol. “I can’t meet my friends because I have to make the tea” is one quote from a local young carer. “I look after my younger brother when my mum drinks too much” is another. Looking after someone can be very difficult and demanding, and for young people looking after a parent or sibling, it’s a huge burden for young shoulders to bear – especially when their peers are getting on with the business of being children, having fun or focussing on doing well at school. Young carers can be aged between 5 and 18 and do a range of tasks in and around the house. They are sometimes left alone to do the caring and their tasks may involve washing, cooking, shopping, dressing the person they care for and much more. Young carers may even sometimes have to give medicine, take care of the household bills and manage the money and look after younger siblings. They can feel isolated and miss out on much of the fun that any child is entitled to. This is where the West Lothian Young Carers Project comes in. A branch of the Carers of West Lothian charity, they provide individual support for young carers, identify hidden young carers who may need support, raise awareness of the issues and organise group activities and relief. Activities and outings provide the opportunity to have a break from their responsibilities and meet other young carers. According to UK-wide research, the average age of a young carer is 12; 75% of young carers are looking after their mum and 50% live with a lone parent. 48% of young carers are looking after someone with a mental health issue.

chool is out, children are on holiday, long summer days and things to do in the open-air. It is not the time to linger in the kitchen. It is the time to think of picnics and food to cook for easy eating out doors. Picnic food can be as grand or as simple as the circumstances allow. Posh food for summer events when you nearly need a butler to help serve the champagne and lay out the linen table-cloth … or an apple, lump of cheese and a crust of bread all eaten from your back-pack on a walk in the hills are both satisfying the same need. Food for out of doors must taste good, be easy to carry and be sustaining.

Raised Pork Pies, Scotch Eggs, soup in a thermos, fruit cake, biscuits and fresh fruit are still the foods best for out-doors. So what follows are some slightly new twists on the theme. Sausage Plate Pie These are exactly the same ingredients as for sausage rolls but quicker to assemble and easier to pack for a picnic 225gm short crust pastry 220gm sausage meat 1 onion chopped 1 egg beaten Chopped, fresh mixed herbs or a good table-spoonful chutney Method. Roll out the pastry into 2 circles to fit a 8’’ or 9’’ metal plate. Mix the sausage meat, egg, onion and herbs or chutney well together. Line the plate with one circle of pastry, pile the filling on top and cover with the second round of pastry. Brush the top with a little milk and bake in the oven at 220°C for 30 minutes.

I remember with pleasure the childhood corned beef and Heinz sandwich spread baps followed by banana and brown sugar sandwiches which, as children, we considered enough sustenance for a day playing at the beach. On car journeys food could be more “normal” and my Mother would bring a fruit cake, pork pie, boiled eggs with salt and pepper in screws of paper, tomatoes, a loaf of bread which she sliced to order, sliced ham, butter, cheddar cheese, salad-cream and lettuce. From these we could make up whatever fillings we preferred for self-made sandwiches. For drink we had diluted fruit squash. This was the late 50’s early 60’s and the car was

It may also be the simplest to make since there is no cooking! 1 cucumber peeled and chopped finely 1small red and 1 small green pepper, cored, de-seeded and finely chopped 500gm very ripe tomatoes ,skinned, deseeded and chopped or 200ml passata (commercially made strained tomatoes) 1 small onion finely chopped 2 cloves garlic crushed 75ml red wine vinegar 200ml good olive oil ½ litre very cold water or ice and water Salt, pepper, Tabasco, tomato ketchup and a couple of mint leaves. All to taste.

For the topping melt the topping butter gently with the chocolate and pour and spread it on the filling. Leave for 5-10 minutes till just setting and then, with a sharp knife mark out the bars, about 16. Leave to set. These need to be kept cool or the result is a custard slide; a bit like a mud slide but better to eat! Method. Puree, wiz in a blender or liquefy with a wand all the ingredients apart from ½ the olive oil. Press through a coarse sieve or blend a second time. Stir in the oil and check and adjust the taste. Add a little lemon juice if liked. Keep cold in a thermos. If not eating this on a picnic serve with croutons and a garnish of finely chopped cucumber, onion, mint and red pepper. Nanaimo Bars Sweet tray bakes or slices are easy puddings for a day out. Try Rocky Road, flapjack, Florida Lemon Square or this different biscuit/cake from Canada. I am told you must use Birds Custard powder for the authentic flavour, so I did. This is fun for young cooks to make. Base ingredients 125gm butter melted 40gm sugar 25gm cocoa powder 1 large egg lightly beaten 175gm crushed biscuits, digestive are best 75gm coconut, flaked or desiccated 75gm chopped walnuts Filling ingredients 50gm butter 2 tablespoons custard powder 1 teaspoon vanilla essence 3 tablespoons milk 225gm icing sugar Topping ingredients 75gm dark chocolate 1 tablespoon butter. Method. Lightly oil and line with cling-film a traybake tin. Mix well all the base ingredients together and press into the tin. Set aside to chill in the fridge. Make the filling by creaming the filling butter with the custard powder and vanilla. Add the milk and icing sugar alternatively about 1/3 at a time till smooth. 24hr Balerno Bowlathon

fter months of preparation involving help from many friends in and around Balerno Bowling Club, Ross Young and Grant Wilson kicked off on their 24hr Bowlathon on Saturday 9th June at 1pm, playing continually for the full 24hrs, achieving what they set out to do - they raised just short of £2000, which will be split between the Special Care Baby Unit at St Johns Hospital, Livingston and the Edinburgh Transplant Unit and Games Team. Ross Young, who is a co-founder of the Bowlathon, has chosen The Edinburgh Transplant Unit/Team after being diagnosed in August 2005 with Polycystic Kidney Disease. Ross said “Since 2005 I have been treated with medication then dialysis and lucky enough to receive my transplant on 18th Nov 2010. I now participate in the British Transplant Games travelling Britain each year to help raise awareness for the need of organ donation”

Art in the Park: Colinton 2012

rt in the Park, Colinton’s annual village fair, will take place this year on Sunday September 2nd or September 9th (rain date). The day will run from 11am to 5pm in historic Spylaw Park. The event is organised by Colinton Village Events (CVE) Group and encompasses a wide array of handmade arts & crafts stalls, a dedicated area for children’s activities, a dog show (run by Citidogs Crèche), an all-day performance area, with delicious food including burgers, pizza, home baking, gourmet coffee and ice-cream. We are pleased to announce a very special and brand new addition to Art in the Park 2012. CVE Group will team up with Mark Medcalf FRICS of Mark Medcalf Associates (Chartered Art and Antique Surveyors) to bring you ‘Antiques in the Park’. Visitors can bring along two items to be valued for a £5 fee (or £3 for one item), with proceeds used to fund CVE community events/projects.
