Editor’s Message Welcome to the June issue of the Konect Directory. It’s the countdown to summer and we’ve optimistically included an article this month on the best tools for BBQs, so here’s hoping we get some BBQ weather. I’ve been learning about a local artist from Juniper Green whose work you may have seen when it was displayed in Juniper Green Parish Church last year - Edwin Lucas painted in the 1930s and 40s and has left us with a variety of paintings of the local area as well as Edinburgh itself. The Grey Horse in Balerno is offering you the chance to win a bar meal for two in this issue as the crossword competition prize, so try your luck on page 48. Congratulations to Joyce Spence of Currie who won the crossword competition in the last issue. Thanks for reading the Konect Directory.

THE YOUNG MAN FROM JUNIPER Green who painted a mural in the scouts’ “Den” on Belmont Road in the early 1930s - to make it look like the camp site in a wood - went on to become a well-respected and prolific artist, producing paintings in a variety of styles. Edwin George Lucas was born in Leith in 1911, and the family moved to Juniper Green when he was five years old. He attended Juniper Green Primary School, and as a youngster he was one of the first members of the original 31st Pentland Scouts, established in 1924 when Edwin was thirteen. He graduated to the Rover Scouts and it was the Rover crew’s cottage on Belmont Road that Edwin decorated with an interior mural. Most of his paintings were produced in the 1930s and 1940s, starting off with watercolour, for which he drew inspiration from the landscapes around the family home in Juniper Green. He spent a lot of time painting outdoors. His early watercolour landscapes are very tranquil, depicting views which have changed a lot in the last 70 years. He experimented with different styles in the 1940s, still producing landscapes but turning more to oil on canvas, becoming more abstract, doing figurative pieces and experimenting with surrealism. Despite his being mostly self-taught as an artist, his work was well-received and accepted regularly for exhibitions in Scotland by various artistic societies. His most innovative works were somewhat ahead of his time and he never wanted to be defined by any particular style.
Local Artist Edwin G Lucas
Castle and gardens, 1950
He had showed an interest and talent in painting and drawing as a child, but his parents discouraged him from pursuing it as a career. His uncle, the Victorian painter E G Handel Lucas, who had been successful in his early career as a still-life artist, fell out of favour as Impressionism became popular, and ended up living in poverty, so Edwin’s parents weren’t keen to see Edwin go the same way. Edwin spent his whole working life in the civil service. Outside of work his interests, besides his painting, were wide-ranging. He was a very good junior golfer – he was a member of Baberton Golf Club – and played tennis as a young man. He was a pacifist and a conscientious objector during the Second World War, during which time he was assigned to hospital work. It wasn’t easy being a conscientious objector, and it contributed to him leading a fairly isolated life at that time. He took solace in his painting - a solitary occupation. He married in 1952 and didn’t spend so much time painting in favour of family life, returning to it later in the 1980s. We’re fortunate to have so many beautiful paintings of the local area captured before it was heavily populated, along with Lucas’ bolder and more abstract painting of Edinburgh city scapes. Some of his work is held by the City of Edinburgh and is periodically exhibited at the City Arts Centre and in other locations. See www.EdwinGLucas.com for more information and gallery of his paintings.

Spotlight on:
Baberton Golf Club
N
NESTLED AWAY BEHIND THE HOUSING between Juniper Green and Baberton (accessed via Baberton Avenue) Baberton Golf Club is a hidden gem in the truest sense. It doesn't have a sweeping approach or views of the greens visible from the main roads like many golf clubs, but once you approach the course and the step inside the brand new clubhouse, you understand why this hidden gem attracts golfers of all levels from a wide area.
Ewen Murray at Baberton Golf Club's new clubhouse, looking out over one of the newlyconstructed holes. Photography by Peter Tuffy.
The Club has just completed a major project to completely replace the club house. The brand new building boasts a great bar and large dining area, function rooms for members'
use and views over the course. The Club was delighted to welcome Ewen Murray, Sky Sports golf commentator, back to Baberton Golf Club last month to officially open the new building. Ewen was a junior member here at Baberton and gained various national titles as a young member before turning professional. But while the completion of the new club house is the exciting news of the moment, Baberton is, after all, all about the golf course itself. Club Secretary Keith Nicholson explains, “The course is maintained to a very high standard. Over the past few years all of the greens have been changed from clay-based to sand-based, meaning that they are a good surface to putt on all year round and are not prone to flooding. We've recently seen our membership steadily increase as the course has improved and with the introduction of the new clubhouse facilities.” The secluded 90 acre course has great views over the Pentland and Ochill Hills as well as the Edinburgh skyline, and challenges players of any level. There is a range of very flexible membership packages available so you choose a membership based on your circumstances and when you most need to play. They include a midweek membership and a six-day membership (Sunday to Friday) for which there is no joining fee, as well of course as the full membership. The Club is keen to promote young adult members, so for up to 30 year olds there is no joining fee and a reduced fee. If you don't play golf yourself but want to take advantage of the fantastic new facilities at Baberton, social memberships are available whereby you access the food and bar services and use the function rooms. All members can sign in up to 10 guests at a time. And if that isn't enough, you can try before you buy – a trial round is available for £10 so you can check out all that Baberton has to offer and see if it suits you.

A sport for children
Golf doesn't have such a high profile as a sport for children to take up as football or many of the martial arts for example, but the Scottish Government's ClubGolf programme aims to make sure every 9 year old has the chance to try golf. Baberton Golf Club hosts afterschool and Sunday golf classes which provide a taster of the sport, as well as offering a very reasonably priced children's membership. Starting at £75 per year from age 8, (no joining fee) children can play as often as they like. Compared to many other sports, £75 for access for a full year to a top quality facility is a fantastic deal, so if you're looking for an affordable way of getting your kids active, do give Baberton Golf Course a call and see what they offer.

Burn, baby, burn

WHAT BETTER WAY TO CELEBRATE the good weather than to go outside and burn things? Barbecue season is back, and as ever there are all kinds of gadgets promising to make cooking in the great outdoors even greater. If you don't already have a barbecue you're spoilt for choice: you can spend as little as £20 on a charcoal kettle barbecue, or as much as £5,999 on a "Grill Centre" that's bigger than most people's kitchens. If space is at a premium, it's worth considering a portable one, such as Weber's clever little Smokey Joe barbecue (£59.99) or one of its many imitators. Wherever men are showing off you'll find firms offering gadgets to help them, and in outdoor cooking there are clever ideas such as the Grill Daddy Pro brush (about £14.99), which combines a typical grill brush with a steam cleaner to help shift tough burnt-on food and sterilise the grill racks. Alternatively, a quick scan of eBay uncovers plenty of motorised grill brushes for around £15 that promise to take the effort out of cleaning. If that isn't manly enough, the terribly-named Looftlighter (£69.95) is a guaranteed hit, blasting hot air out of the nozzle at a terrifyingly hot 680 degrees to light barbecues, fires and anything else that happens to be nearby. If you'd rather not spend nearly £70 on a glorified lighter - or if you already own a blowtorch - there are still plenty of tempting accessories from chimney starters to help you get things burning (£14.99) to griddle pans, woks, basting brushes, add-on tables,
18
The best tools for a great British barbecue digital thermometers, hot dog rollers (£12) and hamburger presses (£12). You can even get a beer can chicken roaster, which holds a can of beer inside a chicken while you cook it (about £8). It sounds like a daft idea but it really does work - as does the digital thermometer fork (from £16), which can help you avoid poisoning all your friends by telling you whether the meat is cooked through or if it needs a bit longer. Alternatively, an ovenproof thermometer will do the job just fine for around £6, but make sure it's rated for high temperatures: barbecues can be considerably hotter than the domestic ovens many thermometers are designed for. Poisoning isn't the only thing to watch out for: whether you go for an all-singing, all-dancing portable barbecue, a disposable aluminium one or a free-standing kettle model, remember that barbecues produce carbon monoxide, which can be fatal - and they continue to produce it long after you've finished cooking. Never use a barbecue indoors or bring it inside when it's still warm. We're not sure whether a Himalayan Salt Plate counts as a gadget - it's a block of salt - but it's an interesting add-on: instead of cooking directly on the rack you put the plates on the grill and the food on the plates, cooking and seasoning simultaneously. Expect to pay around £9 for a single one, which should last for lots of barbecues and which doubles as a nifty serving plate. Last but not least, there are plenty of LED-powered barbecue lights, such as the threeheaded Best of BBQ LED Grill Light. As much as we love our barbecues, we can't help thinking that if you're buying £40 accessories to barbecue in your own garden in the dark, you might be taking outdoor cooking a little bit too seriously.

Thought for the Month
Being a Dad
W
25 years old: It’s a surprise, but Dad does know a bit, but not much.
WITH FATHER’S DAY COMING UP on June 16th, it’s a good time to appreciate Dads and perhaps to take stock a little if you are one. The passage of time changes our perspective on things including how we parent our children and what we think of our own parents, as the following shows….. 4years old: My Daddy can do anything! 7 years old: My Daddy knows a whole lot about everything! 12 years old: Well naturally Dad does not know everything. 14 years old: Dad? Hopelessly old fashioned, a bit embarrassing really! 18 years old: I know about life better than Dad does, he’s useless!
By Pat Banfill
30 years old: Must find out what Dad thinks! 50 years old: What would Dad have thought about it? I wish I could talk it over with him again. As a Dad, try never to lose sight of your long term goal, which is to create a person that you are pleased to let loose on the world when the time comes. And also remember that all Dads really appreciate encouragement and affirmation, even if they don’t know how to show it. And a final word…..It is important to parent our children well, because they are the ones who may end up choosing our nursing home! all marked and you can try one or all of them depending on how much time you have. There are three main way-marked trails within the Heathland Forest area and all begin from the Glen Car Park at Wilsontown.
I’VE OFTEN FANCIED A VISIT TO THE Wilsontown Ironworks as I had heard it is both a fascinating place and also a good venue for a walk. Walking there today is of course nothing like it would have been 200 years ago and that is all part of the fascination. To get there: Join the A801 from Junction 4 of the M8 Take the A705 to join the A706 Proceed south along the A706 towards Lanark Take the B7016 north of Forth and follow signs for Wilsontown. Turn onto the B7016 signposted for Wilsontown, and go straight ahead at the bend. The Glen car park is on the right-hand side. There are several paths to explore which means that as you explore you discover hidden features from the days of the ironworks as well as plants and animals that inhabit the place today such as quaking grass, wild thyme and field gentian. Summer may feel as though it is never coming but there is a hint of warmth in the air as I write and this is a good season to visit as the flowers are in bloom attracting butterflies. The Wilson family who established the ironworks left the area with a wonderful legacy of parkland where they planted beech, lime, sycamore, ash and oak trees which now stand beside the native woodland along the banks of the interestingly-named Moose. The various trails around the ironworks are

The Glen Walk Walk along the side of the public road past the Moose (Mousewater) and enter the forest at the bend in the road where you can see that there used to be a railway bridge. The Glen trail begins here. It is an easy half mile circular walk that takes you past the Moose and through beautiful grasslands and broadleaf woodland. The other two main walks are a bit longer. Cross the road and go over to the ironworks where you will see heritage trails with boards telling you all about the ironworks that used to be based at Wilsontown. You can walk on the various unmarked forestry paths, some of which will take you a few hours to complete but should all lead you back to Wilsontown. You may even spot some deer or bird of prey on your travels if you are lucky. The Peat Pond Path Another circular walk (my favourite kind), this one leads you through the forest, past a pond and then into Tashieburn woodland before heading back into Heathland Forest. Heathland Forest is the main wooded area and is owned and cared for by the Forestry Commission. The Peat Pond walk takes you on unsurfaced forest tracks that are a bit uneven and can be muddy so decent footwear is probably best. This particular trail is 1.25 miles in length and won’t take more than half an hour to complete. The Forestry Commission grade this walk as moderate so it makes for a good walk.

Quality Row This trail starts from the same point and is within the Heathland Forest too. It is just 0.75 miles and is a quick 15 minutes easy walk, graded easy and again circular taking you through the Ironworks. The trail is named after one of the miners rows here and the path used to be the main road to these houses and an old tramway.
continued until 1955, and then nothing until forestry took over in the 1970s and continues today.
The Ironworks heritage Forestry Commission Scotland looks after the site of Wilsontown Ironworks and a large amount of land round about it, now designated a Scheduled Ancient Monument. Established in 1779 near Forth, it was only the second coke-fired ironworks in Scotland, and the first ironworks in Lanarkshire. It was at the forefront of technological advances and was the location for a number of industrial developments that went on to shape and influence iron manufacturing. Started by three brothers, Robert, John and William Wilson, the business later passed into the hands of William Dixon, who managed the works until it closed in 1842. Coal mining
As you walk the paths today there is only a hint of what once went on there, but forestry work did uncover a large number of bell pits as recently as 2008 and the area has been cleared so that you now get a better indication of how the area once looked.
Wilsontown was a village of 2000 people from all over the UK and beyond, unusual in that the manufacture set-up and the homes of the people were all in the one place in a small valley.
If the historical landscape is more your thing that the flora and fauna you may prefer to take an organized Ranger led guided walk around the ironworks. Personally I prefer to find my own way but the option is there and taking a guided walk allows an explanation of the subtle lumps and bumps in the landscape that you might miss.

Money Matters
Breaking up (the pension) is hard to do By Personal Money Management
D
DIVORCE IS ONE OF LIFE’S MOST stressful events and dealing with the division of assets, particularly pension assets, can be a minefield. What methods are available to divide pension assets? Pension sharing or splitting This method is the preferred options as it offers a clean break and gives the ex-spouse legal ownership and control over their share of the pension assets. The benefits are usually transferred into a personal pension plan in the ex-spouse’s name. The disadvantage is that any lump sum death benefits can not be shared and may need to be replaced. Off setting The value of the pension assets is considered when valueing the couples’ matrimonial assets, but they each maintain their own pension rights with the value of the pension being offset against other assets. A common situation is that one of the partners has a much larger pension than the other and that member may keep his or her pension rights while the ex-spouse retains the matrimonial home.
30
Earmarking This allows a portion of the benefits to be earmarked for the ex-spouse. The benefits continue to be held in the original member’s pension plan until retirement. At this point the benefits will be paid to the respective parties in the proportions required by the earmarking order. Earmarking is a simple solution but a major disadvantage is that it does not allow a clean break and the couples may need to keep in touch many years after an acrimonious divorce. Another large disadvantage of this is that the member whose original pension it was, would have the right for any investment decisions and may choose an investment risk which the other partner would consider much inappropriate but can do nothing about it. Finally, if the member or ex-spouse dies the earmarking payment will cease. Written by: Peter M Marshall PhD, DipPFS, AFPC Personal Money Management 0131 538 7390

Baberton History Project … get involved … training provided
ER
For All Your Security Needs www.caledonianlocksmiths.co.uk
A small group has started to research the history of the Baberton Estate built by George Wimpey between 1972 and 1977. We are researching its pre-housing-estate history as well as the story of its post-1970 community. There are half a dozen of us just now, with different interests and skills, but we will find it difficult in the coming months to cover all the work that we think will be needed. So, we are hoping to find people who would be interested in joining the group to help research the historical documents and/or the oral history and who may have some time to spare. Enthusiasm and interest in the subject are the main requirements. Training and support are available on the afternoon of Monday June 10. We hope some of you might like to join our working group and take advantage of the training session. If you would like to know more or just would like a chat about it, please contact Helen Ogg, ogghelen@gmail.com or phone 442 2135 as soon as possible.

Green Fingers Gardening in June By Anne Pinkerton
F
FLAMING JUNE! OR WILL IT BE A WASH-OUT? Main jobs for the month :
Harvest Early strawberries (keep an eye out for mould and «straw-up» to keep fruit dry and off the soil); mature rhubarb, leafy salads, spring onions, radish, rocket. The last of the asparagus can be cut in early June. The plants should be left to gather strength for next year. Continue mulching and remove any berries which form.
need to be hardened off first. You will get about 50% survival. You have the best chance at this time of the year. Parsley and chives to respond best to this treatment. Continue batch-sowing of carrots, peas and salad crops. June is Highland Show time. A visit can be expensive but if you go in the evening the price falls and on the last day the plants are sold off. There are often good gardening ideas to be seen and the country craft section with bee keeping and other demonstrations are instructive.
Prune Plums, cherries, apricots and peaches. Do this now that the sap is rising so pruning wounds heal and disease is kept at bay. Spring flowering Clematis needs to be cut back so flowers will form for next year Divide Snowdrops before the green tops die away. Replant bulbs in small groups (3 or 4 bulbs). Primroses and polyanthus. Dead head daffodils but leave the leaves as long as you can. Mulch Where ever possible, use grass cuttings on potatoes and asparagus. Keep 1 metre clear of weeds round the base of fruit trees. Watch out for pests Blackfly on broad beans -pinch out the growing tops. Greenfly on almost any soft new shoots - drenching with a high pressure jet of water will get rid of most insects if monitored regularly. Whitefly in the green house - pheromone traps. Sow Parsley if you have not done so by now. To help germination pour boiling water on the soil and allow to cool sufficiently before sowing. This warms and sterilizes the soil. You can also cheat by planting the growing herbs from the supermarket. This can be done at almost any time of the year but the plants

Recipe & Food Notes
A
AT FIRST GLANCE THE NOTION OF flowers as food is a little odd, but we eat some flowers without a second thought. Purple sprouting broccoli is a well loved vegetable, so is cauliflower. Elderflowers are added to gooseberries and served as fritters. Violet flowers and rose petals have been crystallized and used as decorations on cakes and puddings. Dandelion and cowslip flowers have long been used to brew wine and without the flowers of hops life would have been much more sober. Jasmine tea is made by adding and blending the strongly scented flowers of the climbing plant to large leaf green tea. Chinese food stores usually sell packets of the real thing with flower heads mixed in the tea, not just tea to which jasmine oil has been added. It is the most refreshing drink to take with a Chinese meal. Several herb teas are infusions of flowers which we now, for practical reasons, only see dried. Chamomile, lime flower or hawthorn all used to be gathered and used fresh in season. By drying them they are available all year. To round off this list, what image more evokes traditional high summer than a tall glass of Pimms decorated with mint leaves and bright blue borage flowers?
In the last 10 years or so cooks have again become interested in more uses for flowers in food, not only as decoration but also experimenting with the subtle flavours they can bring to traditional dishes. Lavender, because it is of itself sweet, goes wll in biscuits, scones and shortbread. The leaves and flowers of some scented geraniums can

be used to make a delightful real sponge cake and the flowers should be used in the decoration to indicate the taste to expect. Marigold flowers are good in egg dishes and they are also pretty scattered in a green leaf salad. Marigold Omelette Allow 2 eggs per person. Buy the best you can - for such a simple dish were the egg’s flavour is important chose organic freerange if you can. Beat the eggs with a fork in a mug or small bowl with a dash of water, mix in some finely cut chives, a pinch of salt, a grind of black pepper and the petals of a whole marigold flower. (You can use dried flowers in winter, Napiers in Edinburgh sell them). Have a small frying-pan ready, heated on the hob and melt a knob of butter over the heat. When the butter is foaming pour in the beaten eggs and with the fork, gather the cooked edge of the mixture to the centre of the pan. Continue doing this until all the mixture is cooked to your personal taste. Many people prefer their omelette well cooked, others say an omelette should be still just runny in the middle. Do as you please, eating is a pleasure as well as a necessity. With a salad and a glass of wine the perfect omelette satisfies hunger and stimulates the other senses. Nasturtiums are exuberantly coloured, exotic looking flowers and they are good to eat. They have a peppery taste. The flower buds are also delicious in salads because they add a sharp taste. The Cyrenians, who farm in Humbie Holdings in Kirknewton, included these flowers in their salad packs last year. They also included snap-dragon or antirrhinum flowers with mixed leaves. They sell their produce at the Farmer's Market in Balerno. Do visit the market and see what other food pleasures you can find, there is sure to be something new and interesting. If you are having a summer party and would like to make a centre-piece for a buffet this can be made weeks in advance and stored in the freezer till you want it.

Flowers in Food (continued)
Keep in the freezer till you are ready to display it full of fresh fruit, ice cream balls or whatever other pudding you wish.
Frozen Flower Bowl You need: 2 bowls which when resting inside each other leave a gap of approximately an inch (2.5cm). A larger gap is better than a smaller one. Flowers or flower petals: Chose by the colour you would like, such as roses, violets, pansies, carnations or pinks, lavender, marigolds, snap-dragons, nasturtiums, lovein-the-mist, jasmine, sweet-pea, cornflower, primula, cowslips or primroses. Some crushed ice cubes. Cold boiled water. At the bottom of the larger bowl put some crushed ice. Set the smaller bowl on the ice and make the gap between the bowls equal all round. It is worth while taking some care at this stage because this defines the shape and strength of the final object. Pour in some water and put the whole thing carefully in the deep-freeze. Using boiled water means there will not be any air bubbles and the "bowl" will be crystal clear. When the first lot of water is solid start building your bowl. Place some of the larger flowers or buds down the gap between the bowls, pour in just enough water to cover the flowers, no more because they will float, but cover the flowers because they may go brown if frozen uncovered. This would spoil the effect. Carry on layer by layer till you have a complete bowl with a finishing rim of clear water. This will take time but designing the bowl can be fun and it will store for weeks until you need to use it. To un-mould the bowl pour a little hot water into the inner bowl and swirl it about. Release the mould. Holding the flower bowl upside down on a cloth, to stop it slipping or your hand being freezer burnt, run a little hot water over the larger mould bowl. It will release quite quickly.

Flower jelly or flower scented vinegars are good accompaniments to different foods. Lavender goes well with lamb and chicken; fennel with fish and sage or marjoram with pork. Flower Jelly 2kg cooking apples washed chopped whole (skin, pips and all) 6 or so tablespoons of strongly scented lavender flowers 3 pints water 3lb sugar Cook the apples with the flowers, covered, slowly in the water till they are a mush. Transfer the fruit to a jelly bag, hang it up and let it drip overnight. If you don't have a jelly bag use a clean muslin or fine cloth to strain the liquid. Measure the collected liquid and use 1 pound of sugar to each pint of juice. Heat slowly till the sugar has melted and then boil rapidly till setting point is reached. Pot, cover and label. You can use this method to make mint, geranium or marjoram jelly. Violet Flower vinegar This is a sweet vinegar which can be used in the same way as balsamic vinegar. Try a little on strawberries. Loosely fill a screw-top jar with the petals of Parma Violets. Fill the jar with good white wine vinegar, and steep the petals until the liquid is a delicate blue. Set the jar in a sunny place for 3 or 4 weeks, this helps the process. Strain and keep in a cool place. N.B. be careful about the jar lid because vinegar will rot any exposed metal. To avoid trouble put a layer of cling wrap over the jar before tightening the lid. Other flowers can be used to flavour vinegar - try dill or marjoram or chive. There are many cook books on herbs and flowers but I still much enjoy my copy of The Edible Flower Garden by Kathy Brown.

Jack & Jill Markets
T
THE JACK & JILL MARKET IS SCOTLAND’S quality nearly new Baby & Kids Market. The team run monthly indoor markets across Scotland, offering local families the opportunity to save and make money, buying and selling gently used gear for 0-9 year olds. Ever increasing in popularity, The Jack & Jill Markets are made up of a Large Items Gallery, where shoppers can select from the range of cots, car seats, buggies, bikes and high chairs and between 40 and 60 stalls. These are manned by parents delighted to pass their kids’ much loved clothes, books and toys on to good homes. And they are even more delighted to count their takings at the end of the day. Meadowbank Stadium plays host to the capital city market and has always been an incredibly popular market. Throngs of Mums, Dads, Grandparents and parents-to-be visit the Edinburgh East venue every month. Cathy Uttley, Marketing and Events Manager told us, “the demand for a second Edinburgh Market has been there for quite some time, but the New Year gave us a kickstart to source a suitable second venue.”
Nearly new baby & kids market On Saturday 2nd March, Cathy and the team welcomed over 500 happy shoppers to HeriotWatt University for the launch of Edinburgh West event. “It was a great market and the feedback from stallholders and shoppers was just fantastic”, Cathy says, “It was great to see busy parents take five minutes to examine their purchases, soak up the atmosphere and enjoy a well deserved coffee in the on site café”. The Jack & Jill Market returns to HeriotWatt Saturday 8th June and promises to be a fabulous event.
