Hello neighbours This month Emma Merchant has been talking to our local post offices to find out what goes on behind the scenes and how they deal with the mountain of letters and parcels that we will be asking them to despatch for us in the run-up to Christmas. There are lots of fantastic offers for Konect readers this month, so do look carefully through the adverts and get yourself some great deals from local businesses on everything from health and beauty, car, home and garden. And since it’s the season for spooky stories, we have two strange tales from the local area on pages 40 and 41. They are events that happened a few years ago, but are the subject of current TV and film projects they are still a subject of fascination as they have never been fully explained, so read the article and draw your own conclusions!

Your local Balerno and Currie Post Offices By Emma Merchant

B

efore you know it, Christmas will be here. Dedicated writers are already half way through their Christmas card lists. The rest of us will soon catch up. Together we will create mountains of cards and parcels for our local Balerno and Currie Post Offices to process and deliver. In the UK alone, it is estimated that we send a staggering 1.8 billion Christmas cards each year. Sharon and Steven Carlyle run Balerno Post Office on Main Street. They moved to the village from Colinton last year and took over the Post Office. In a very short time they have won a special place in the hearts of local villagers, and their improvements to the Post Office interior have been the topic of much village chat. Everything has been smartened up, and with clever rearrangement, the shop space is now bright, light and roomy. Running a Post Office is an important and responsible job and not without its challenging moments. Sharon tells me about their first experience of Christmas rush last year.

“It was absolutely mad!” Steven calls out cheerfully from the counter where he is serving, “I’m still recovering!” Sharon continues. “From the minute we opened until late that evening we served a never-ending stream of customers. We were swamped by post and parcels, and dealt with a huge number of complicated services too. It was difficult to concentrate on filling out important documents, and serve waiting customers as quickly as possible. We handed out chocolates and played Christmas music to keep everyone’s spirits up. People were very understanding. They knew we were doing our best. But with only the two of us working, the queues kept growing. We had no time for lunch or breaks, and by evening we were shaking with exhaustion. Steven looked at me weakly over a chocolate bar and asked, “Is this busy? Does it get busier than this?” But they remain remarkably cheerful, even under pressure. “We love working with people,” smiles Sharon. “Every day is different and we do like the challenges, but really it’s the customers we enjoy.” They have lots of creative plans for the future of their Post Office. “We liked the village feel of Balerno when we first walked up Main Street. It was sleepy and deserted, but we could imagine it bustling with shoppers. It would be great to see the Main Street shops growing busier and busier. We’re trying to provide services that people want to come and use, such as our new passport photo booth.“

1)

“We had barely settled in, and were both still learning. I had previously assisted at Colinton Post Office counter, so I had a pretty good idea of what to expect but Steven was thrown in at the deep end. He was also completing his MSc in Ergonomics at the time.” “Monday 12th December 2011 was the postal deadline for 2nd class Christmas deliveries. We won’t forget it in a hurry.”

“People really like our greetings card selection. They come specially to buy them. And we’ve just brought in a new Christmas gift collection, with attractive jewellery items, scarves and candles. But his is just the beginning. Watch this space!” Margaret Marshall and her team of twelve cheerful ladies run the Currie Post Office on Lanark Road West. Margaret’s shop is quite literally filled to the brim with all sorts of interesting gifts. In fact it’s a bit of an Aladdin’s Cave.

“People say we have so much on our shelves we should invest in elastic walls,” she laughs, “but the Post Office is a listed building in a conservation area, so we can’t make alterations. And the walls are two feet thick, anyway.”

removal of some services, it can be a challenge to keep people visiting their local Post Office.”

Even the internal walls are remarkably thick. For its size, the little singlestorey building is unusually fortified. But there is good reason for this. The Post Office business was previously situated over the Lanark Road West. The current Post Office building was formerly the local police station.

But Margaret has plenty to entice the visitor.

2)

“Yes, and my office was the police cell,” Margaret laughs, “so I have to behave myself in there!” But a prisoner at work Margaret most certainly is not. Since she first took over the Post Office twenty-five years ago, she has continued to enjoy every minute of it. “It’s such a sociable job. We ladies really are a team. We all get on and there is usually a lot of laughter. And as we all work part time, we are easily able to cover for each other, and help with everyone’s holiday arrangements.” Margaret enjoys the breadth of work that running a Post Office daily provides, and the interesting people she meets. “We like to take the time to chat with people while we are filling out forms for them at the counter. In this job we are privileged to play a small part at some important times in people’s lives - both good times and bad. A friendly word of congratulation or kind concern can make all the difference. Post Offices have traditionally been vital community meeting places. I remember twenty-five years ago long queues used to stretch down the street on Thursday mornings when people drew their pensions. These days, following the

“We change our stock quite often. Many of our customers are local and come regularly 3) to buy gifts, so we like to keep the range new and interesting for them.” As well as a wide variety of cards, Margaret sells numerous gifts. She is especially pleased with the stylish ‘Joseph Joseph’ kitchen bowls and utensils, and her range of Scottish items, such as quarried slate placemats and coasters. Pop in and have a browse, and while you’re there, take note of the thickness of the walls. Ask yourself what scenes and scuffles may once have taken place within them!

With Profit Funds – still a safe haven? By Personal Money Management What are they? With Profit Funds are investments with particular characteristics where the fund manager invests in diverse asset classes such as shares, fixed interest securities, Gilts and Corporate Bonds etc. What are their advantages? The big advantage of a With Profits is what is called smoothed returns. This means that when the investments are doing well, the managers hold back some of the gain in order to compensate the years when the investments do not do quite so well i.e. we have a smoothing effect of the ups and downs of the stock market. This feature meant they were popular with cautious investors. Has it worked? In the recent past poor performance has meant that Annual Bonuses (AB) paid on With Profit have dropped considerably, so the return has not been as good as in previous years. In addition, when a With Profit fund matures i.e. the client cashes in or transfers the fund, the

pmm

managers pay a Terminal Bonus (TB). In recent years the Terminal Bonuses have also been cut, simply as a result of poorer performance than was anticipated. Market Value Reduction (MVR) Under certain conditions fund managers can apply a market value reduction. This means they deduct a sum from the current value of the bond before paying out the proceeds to the investor. In conditions of market unrest the MVR increases meaning a reduction in the surrender value. Action Recently, certain providers have been reducing the MVR and increasing TB which means it may be a good time to review any With Profit you hold in a pension or direct. Always seek professional advice before acting. Written By: Dr Peter Marshall PhD, DipPFS, AFPC Personal Money Management, tel: 0131 538 7390

Scottish Women’s Rural Institutes

S

WRI – affectionately known as the “Rural” – is one of the largest women’s organisations in Scotland. It is open to all women of all ages and being a member allows you to learn and share skills, enjoy a wide range of activities and enjoy the friendship of others – oh, and no monthly meeting is complete without a cuppa. Why do you not come along to your local Rural and give it a try? You may ask “When and where did Rural start out?” In 1897 the first Women’s Institute was formed in Stoney Creek, Canada, and progressed until in 1917 it arrived in Longniddry as the first in Scotland. Nowadays there are many local Institutes which are part of 33 Federations across the country. The original aims of the SWRI remain today in that they

18

aim to keep alive rural traditions, give women an outlet to learn skills, provide friendship and companionship. To achieve this classes are organised on many topics, demonstrations are given and there are opportunities to take part in sports, drama and singing plus lots more besides. In our area there are three Institutes – Balerno, Currie and Juniper Green. You will receive a warm welcome to help them continue the aims of the Rural and ensure it continues through the approaching centenary. Meeting details are: Balerno - Community Centre 7:30 - First Tuesday each month Currie - Masonic Hall 7:00 - Second Tuesday each month Juniper Green - Village Hall 7:00 - Second Monday each month

Winter First Aid Tips: Burns

By Twist Training

A

s winter draws in, we snuggle in winter woollies, light fires and celebrate evenings such as bonfire night. With these warming treats come certain dangers including the risk of burns. Whilst avoidance is always the main priority it’s also good to know what to do in the event of a burn.

Never use fats such as butter or lotions or creams on a burn. These keep the heat in and will have to be removed in the hospital before they can treat it!

Here’s my 1,2,3... to treat a burn 1 - Cool the burn under cold running water for at least ten minutes. This reduces pain, swelling and the risk of scarring. 2 - Loosely cover the burn with cling film, or a clean plastic bag. Leave loose if it’s a foot or hand. This helps prevent infection by keeping the area clean. 3 - If necessary, call 999 or get to an A&E. The burn may need urgent medical treatment. Always seek medical advice for a baby or child that has been burned as even a small burn can be potentially life-threatening to a baby or child. There’s always lots of advice passed down from one generation to the next. Here are a few more top tips and myth busters so sift the facts from old wives tales: If the clothing is stuck to the burn area you should leave the clothing in place. However if the clothes are not stuck to the burn, and you can remove them quickly, you should do so. With babies and children concentrate the water on the area of the burn. Do not put them in a bath of cold water as you can risk giving them hypothermia. To advertise call Jenny on 07824 469266 or Charlene on 07772 941899

A walk through history By Karen Murray

W

alking simply for walking’s sake is perfectly fine. Exercise is not only important in our every day lives, it is perhaps paramount in today’s sedentary times. However, if you can combine a walk with some historical or geographical interest, all the better. Having often headed to village of Cramond to grab a walk and some fresh sea air - it being a great area for the kids to practice cycling, roller skating or scootering - I have always fancied checking out the ruins of the Roman settlement that lie between the Church and the shoreline. Parking in the main car park at Cramond, there is a narrow and somewhat muddy path leading directly from the car park to the ruins.

1)

During the Roman occupation of Britain, Cramond was an important coastal fort. It was built at the mouth of the Almond River in 142 AD to protect the eastern frontier established by the Romans. The fort was occupied until about 170 AD, and then again briefly between 208 and 211 AD. Later, what is now Cramond Kirk was built within the ruins of the fort, and the foundations of the fort were only rediscovered in 1954. Perhaps even more interesting than the striking remains from the Roman occupation of the area, the archaeological excavations

24

that were carried out revealed a site that has been dated to 8,500 years ago - making this the oldest evidence of human occupation in Scotland. As you wander around the excavation site, reading the interpretation boards, the fort comes alive in front of you. It happened to be the annual Doors Open Days weekend when I visited so the Kirk was open to all visitors and investigation of the excavation site actively encouraged. That said I was on a walk and in need of exercise, so while I enjoyed the historical interlude, I stepped quickly through history and into the walled park area behind the Kirk. A play park here might distract the kids, but also add to their enjoyment of the exercise. The path continues along the length of the high wall and out the other side, but ignore the exit and continue on the path as it heads back into the wooded park area becoming narrower and muddier as the trees encroach. There is a seemingly disused series of ‘outdoor gym’ structures that I personally chose to ignore but I could probably have increased the exercise regime by giving them a go. The whole circuit of the walled area does not take long - maybe 15 minutes from the car park to the ‘kissing gate’ exit on the far side of the park. This exit brings you out onto a field overlooking the Cramond shoreline and across to Cramond Island. Here things get a little soggy underfoot - the path is a little unclear and goes across fields but basically heads straight(ish) down towards the path along the

shoreline - just aim for the corresponding gate at the bottom of the field. From there, you can complete a simple loop by walking along the tarmac path back to the village itself and the car park. A relatively quick walk but with various terrain and plenty of history. Of course if it happens to be low tide, you are bound to be tempted to walk out the island do ONLY try this two hours either side of low tide though as you might end up stuck over there for some while and there is not much in the way of shelter. It was in fact low tide when I visited and sorely tempted though I was, I decided on a walk on the beach instead and then a look around the exhibition and education centre which runs at weekends between May and September at the Maltings, Riverside. You get a great insight into the history of Cramond Island when it used to be inhabited. It would be worth looking around the exhibition before making the trip over the causeway to the island.

ay EE ck! d o FR e l t ur ch l a f C r yo oo fo er r t in w

If you have timed it well and decide to make the walk out to and around the island, you will be in need of refreshment on your return. Luckily you can choose from the Cramond Gallery Bistro on Riverside or the local pub the Cramond Inn. Visit www.cramondheritagetrust.org.uk for more information on the village and its surrounds.

Vet’s Tip: Christmas

Christmas presents, or ones that haven’t been thought through carefully enough.

I

t’s around this time of year that people start thinking of getting the Christmas presents organised. And thinking of the kids who so desperately want a rabbit or a puppy, a trip to the pet shop is planned for Christmas Eve. But it’s vital to consider carefully if you will be able to look after the animal properly. A puppy is a big commitment in terms of time for proper training, care and attention. Will the new rabbit or kitten be loved and looked after, or will it just be like a new toy and once the novelty has worn off, it is left with no handling after a few weeks? West Calder Dogs Trust told us that they often experience an increase in unwanted animals landing on their doorstep in January - unwanted

The Dog’s Trust slogan “a dog is for life, not just for Christmas” goes for every animal. They need love, care and attention and though it may seem like a fantastic present, an animal is actually a long term commitment.

Our Own X-Files By Helen-Jane Shearer

R

ounding a corner of a woodland path on Dechmont Law, a forester going about his job in November 1979 entered a clearing and came upon a large dome-shaped metallic object. So begins the tale of one of the most significant UFO (Unidentified Flying Object) incidents in Europe. Known as “The Livingston Incident” in paranormal research circles, on police files it remains an unsolved case of “an attack by person or persons unknown.” Robert Taylor, employee of the Livingston Development Corporation, was on a routine inspection of the Dechmont Law hillside one November morning, accompanied by his Irish red setter, to check fences to ensure that sheep and cattle didn’t stray into the wood. No-one witnessed what happened, until he turned up at his home in Deans on foot later that morning in a state of shock and barely able to speak. He had reversed his truck into a ditch, his trousers were ripped and his dog was very agitated. He stammered to his incredulous wife, “I have been attacked by a spaceship.” Robert’s story, which he maintained throughout his life, was that as he came upon this large dome- shaped object in the clearing, two round objects dropped from it to the ground and started rolling towards him, making sucking and popping noises. 1)

His dog was barking madly and there was an overwhelming burning smell. As they got near to him, projections came out of them towards his hips, grabbed him and pulled him forcibly towards the larger object. At this point he lost consciousness. When he came to, the object had gone leaving nothing but imprints in the ground and Robert in a state of shock. He managed to stumble back to his truck but reversed it into a ditch, such was his disorientation. He staggered home to Deans on foot. Robert’s assertion that he had been attacked by a spaceship and his description of the event led to the involvement of Strange Phenomena Investigations (SPI), a research society headed by Malcolm Robinson. I spoke to Malcolm, who was on site the following day to photograph the imprints on the ground and to interview the police and LDC personnel involved. The police forensic analysis of the ripped trousers concluded that they had not been torn by any forest debris (i.e. not by branches or sharp plants of any sort) nor by barbed wire. There was no explanation for the marks in the ground, and after thorough investigation by the police and forensic experts, the case remains unsolved. Robert’s boss and colleagues described him as a steady sane person, not given to telling stories and with no interest in the paranormal. I asked Malcolm how he went about investigating such cases. “You have to rule out the obvious explanations. I always ask people if they are on any medication. They may be after notoriety. There are lots of possible explanations so you have to be very careful.” He became fascinated by the paranormal when he set out as a young man to disprove the existence of ghosts. After some personal experiences and listening to the experiences of many other people he gradually began to change his mind. He now runs Strange Phenomena Investigations and says that the vast majority of reports of strange happenings can be explained. But he believes that there are enough unexplainable incidents to convince him that, he says, “there is evidence to suggest that humans have

been visited by beings from elsewhere – not necessarily extra terrestrial but from a different dimension”. A National Geographic programme is scheduled to be screened in early next year on the best UFO cases across Europe. “The Livingston Incident” features as part of the documentary and Malcolm was involved in the filming of it recently. He has also been approached by a film company who are currently making a film for release next year based on another UFO incident in this area – the “A70 Incident.”

they couldn’t account for the missing time. Neither Garry nor Colin had any interest whatsoever in the paranormal and, totally non-plussed, they didn’t report the incident to anyone besides friends. But they became increasingly troubled by nightmares, and in Garry’s case, severe headaches; both men found scars on their bodies that weren’t there before. They eventually contacted Malcolm at SPI, who encouraged them to undergo hypnotic regression therapy to try to discover what had happened that evening during the lost hour. Although sceptical, they were desperate for their own sanity and agreed to the hypnotherapy. They have no recollection of what happened, but in a series of hyphotherapy sessions they described their experiences. They were apparently taken into the craft and underwent various experiments at the hands of small grey creatures, some of them painful. The “A70 Incident” is still a subject of fascination, and since as far as anyone involved can tell Garry and Colin did not fabricate the whole story, their experience remains unexplained.

2)

The stretch of the A70 from Kirknewton to Lanark, the “Lang Whang” is a quiet route between the heather-covered hills and has a bleak and remote aspect. It is the location of another unexplained incident, this time in 1992. Two men from Edinburgh, Gary Woods and Colin Wright, were driving along the A70 heading for Tarbrax one evening. As they turned one of the sharp corners just past Harperrig Reservoir, they were faced with what they described as a two-tiered black disc hovering motionless above the road. Shocked, they decided nevertheless to just drive under it and keep going. As they passed under the object, it emitted a curtain of mist which, as it reached the car, enveloped them in total blackness. Moments later, they regained sight and the car was shuddering. Somewhat shaken, they continued their drive to Tarbrax. But, on arriving at their friend’s house they discovered that it was an hour later than they had thought; the journey which normally took 30 – 40 minutes had taken an hour and a half and

How would you react if one of your good friends or colleagues announced they had been attacked by aliens? “I have no problem with sceptics,” says Malcolm. “I think you have to have had a personal experience of the paranormal, or be very close to someone who has, before you will start to accept it as an explanation for events that are otherwise inexplicable.” With thanks to Malcolm Robinson of Strange Phenomena Investigations.

The Blue Goose Restaurant Review

By Helen-Jane Shearer

T

he Blue Goose Country Pub and Restaurant is a hidden treasure nestled beside the Water of Leith on the A70 opposite the Water of Leith Visitor Centre. Within easy reach and with its own car park, there’s no excuse for not calling in and discovering what’s been going on in here in the last twelve months. It opened in November last year after a complete refurb; new owner Gerry Ritchie has lavished attention on the décor, combing auction houses for Chinese art, Victoriana and traditional furniture. The result is in delightful good taste, the eclectic mixture giving a comfortable and atmospheric olde worlde feel. The beautiful interior is more than matched by the quality of the food. I went along with my husband Dan to sample Blue Goose everyday fayre. Over our aperitif of home-made bread and Spanish olives, we chatted to Gerry about his years spent in Sweden and Spain and how this has inspired some of his food ideas. (Gerry keeps his Spanish up to scratch as he speaks regularly to his Spanish suppliers regarding the ingredients for his authentic tapas menu). We selected starters from the light lunch menu, which is served from 12noon to 6pm every day, so flexible if you want a late lunch and you can also treat it as an early dinner if you get in before 6pm. This special light lunch menu changes weekly. I selected a warm goat’s cheese salad starter. The grilled cheese melted slightly into the hot toasted homemade bread, which was generously topped with delicious and lightly spiced home-made onion marmalade. Dan selected crabs claws and tiger prawns with crispy red onions, and a radish and avocado salad. Both dishes were beautifully presented and deliciously warming starters for a perfect autumn

lunch. For main course, I selected wild mushroom risotto, and as Dan was stuck for choice Gerry recommended a meat dish from the main menu - the slow cooked feathered blade of beef served on creamed mashed potatoes, glazed carrots and homemade gravy. The mushroom risotto was creamy, hot and full of flavour, and I stole a piece of the beef from Dan’s plate; it was exquisite, melt-in-the mouth texture and the gravy it was served with was rich and velvety. Gerry explained to us that everything is home-made on the premises. The gravy served with the beef was, like all The Blue Goose gravies and jus, made totally from scratch, the whole process from roasting the veal bones to make the demi-glace sauce base being done in the Blue Goose kitchen. There are no short cuts here and the resulting flavour of all the dishes we sampled spoke of many hours of loving care. In their first year of trading, The Blue Goose has already scooped a couple of awards from Dram Magazine – a bronze medal for the best new gastro pub in Scotland, and a silver medal for the most dog-friendly pub in Scotland. Gerry’s chocolate Labrador Rocco is a favourite with guests and is often to be found warming himself in front of the open fire. Totally replete from our starter and first course lunch, we didn’t sample the desserts this time but will be back for sure. First class food in a beautifully furnished restaurant within easy reach of home, make sure you try it for yourself before the year’s out. Food **** Ambience **** Service ****

November Recipe and Food Notes By Anne Pinkerton

M

ost harvests are over by November, the exception being grapes for very special sweet wines which are left on the vine till the frost concentrates the juice. The other, more practical, harvests for the month are chestnuts and dried beans. Both of these are much enjoyed by the Italians who use them in delicious and innovative ways. Chestnuts do not have to be half raw, burnt and difficult to peel, nor need they be reserved for the brussel sprouts for the Christmas meal. The nuts can become Marron glacee and then, after grating and adding to whipped, sweetened cream become Mont Blanche pudding. The flour from the chestnuts is very nutritious and was the saving of people on restricted diets in harsh winters in Central Europe. They added it to bread and soups or stews when there was little else to feed them. There are several wonderful rich continental cakes which use chestnut flour with chocolate, just right for eating with strong coffee in Vienna or at home as a special treat. Italian Chestnut Soup The recipe gives instructions for dealing with fresh nuts; but you can find cooked, plain frozen chestnuts in some supermarkets, especially at this time of year. They are very good, save waste and work and you can use as few as you like. 500gm chestnuts 2 onions chopped fine 1 carrot chopped fine 1 stick celery chopped fine butter or bacon fat for frying 2 1/2 pints stock or water Salt, pepper, chopped parsley Score the bottom of the chestnuts and bake them in a slow oven or boil them gently for 15 minutes. They will then be easy to peel.

46

Fry the onions and when browned add and fry the other veg. Add the water or stock and the peeled chestnuts. Cook gently for 40 minutes till the nuts are breaking up. Whiz in a liquidizer or puree with a hand -blender or press through a sieve. Check the seasoning, add salt, pepper and chopped parsley to taste and serve with croutons fried in either butter or bacon fat. If you want to make more of a meal of the dish you can add sliced cooked salami or chorizo. Lamb and Aubergine in Red Cabbage Leaves November makes me think of red cabbage which I believe is an under valued vegetable. Here is an interesting way to use it. 350gm minced lamb 75gm streaky bacon chopped fine 1 medium aubergine cut in small chunks 6 large red cabbage leaves 50gm dried white bread crumbs 2 eggs beaten salt, pepper, ground cumin, ground coriander, chopped parsley table spoon tomato puree. 200gm tin chopped tomatoes a little red wine if you have some Carefully remove 6 large leaves from the cabbage. Blanch them in boiling water and refresh in cold water. They will be pliable and are the wraps for the dish. Keep them under a damp tea cloth till the filling mixture is ready. Brown the onion with the bacon and aubergine. Then add the lamb mince and brown this too.

Please remember to mention The Konect Directory when contacting advertisers

In a bowl mix the bread crumbs and the eggs, salt, pepper, cumin, coriander, tomato puree, parsley and mix well together. Add the meat and veg and mix. Divide this filling between the 6 cabbage leaves and roll them up, making a parcel for the meat. Secure them with a toothpick and put them in a shallow ovenproof baking dish. Cover with the broken up tomatoes and a little more liquid (red wine, tomato juice or stock) Bake in 160ยบC for 60-80 minutes. The rest of the cabbage can be used as a hot veg or for a more interesting coleslaw. After all this savoury food a quick store cupboard pudding :

Apricot Mousse 425gm can apricots in juice 1 tablespoon sugar 8gm or sachet gelatine 1/2 pint double cream lightly whipped Liquidise or blend the fruit with its juice. In a cup or heat proof mug, soften the gelatine with a little water or white wine. Put the cup in a small pan with water half-way up the cup. Warm till the gelatine dissolves and looks clear. Mix with the fruit puree. Gently mix in the sweetened whipped cream. Put in a bowl or individual pots to set in the fridge for at least 2 hours. Decorate with chopped dried apricots, nibbled almonds or a little whipped cream if you feel festive.
