Hello neighbours Welcome to the September issue of the Konect Directory. With the endless analysis last month of the reasons for the riots down in England, it was by contrast lovely to read the nominations for our Friendship Blooms competition, and to learn of people in our local community who give their time simply helping others get through. Vicky’s Flowers prepared a lovely bouquet for the winner, who you can read about on page 16. Back into routine after the summer holidays, there seems to be a lot going on this month, and the Balerno Music Festival kicks off at the end of the month. Check out the regular What’s On page and please continue to send in information on your events and fundraisers so that we can share it around. For the local history article this month thanks are due to Andrew Peden of Curriehill House for sharing his research into the history of Curriehill. Our familiar view of the skyline to the north from various
points in Currie - including from Curriehill Road as on the front cover – would have looked very different from Curriehill Castle in the middle ages, and subsequently from the mansion at Curriehill. Congratulations to Alistair Lyndon of Balerno who won the crossword prize last month. This month you could a meal for two at Kinleith Arms in Juniper Green. They serve delicious fresh home-made food everyday from 12noon to 9pm (from 12.30 on Sundays), so it’s well worth trying your luck with the crossword on page 36. Thanks for reading the Konect Directory and for supporting local businesses.

urriehill Castle Drive, the name of a road, is all that remains to mark that fact that there used to be a castle here. Located on the high ridge of land between Balerno and Currie, it dated back to at least the mid fourteenth century, as there is a reference in a royal charter of 1341 referring to “Terras, fortilace De Hill” - the lands and castle of the Hill. For centuries known as “The Hill,” this became Curriehill. Like many castles, Curriehill had its share of intrigue and violence. There may have been a tunnel at one point linking it to Lennox Tower in Lymphoy, the other side of the Water of Leith. In the sixteenth century it was owned by the Wardlaw family who also owned the Riccarton estate. Alexander Wardlaw of Curriehill was one of the accomplices in the famous 1566 stabbing of David Rizzio, secretary of Mary Queen of Scots. He was exiled along with all the other conspirators, who were then pardoned later in the year and their lands returned to them – but only after all their castles and other dwellings were rendered uninhabitable. This vandalism of the castle was the beginning of the end for Curriehill Castle. It was involved in one further scheme against Mary Queen of Scots - after her marriage to Bothwell, Curriehill was one of six castles on the Water of Leith involved in the campaign against her, and she was forced to abdicate in 1567 in favour of her baby son, James VI.
While Lennox Tower was loyal to the Queen, Curriehill was in favour of her son. A new mansion house was built at Curriehill in the late 16th century, slightly to the east of the castle site, after the turbulent times of Mary Queen of Scots. Curriehill was inhabited by the Skene family at this time, who eventually purchased it in 1604. Sir John Skene was a close confidant of James VI, and was responsible for bringing Ann of Denmark as bride of the king. The king’s superstition and campaign again witches was shared by Skene, and in his role as Lord Advocate from 1589 to 1594 he was involved in the prosecution of many alleged witches. Curriehill was owned and tenanted by many different families over the years. A certain George Watson grew up here at the end of the 1600s. He and his brother James were bought up by their aunt Elizabeth Watson who lived in Curriehill House, and who was the mother of Sir William Davidson. William Davidson settled and married in Amsterdam and actively supported the exiled Charles II. He was rewarded when Charles was restored to the throne in 1660, and the King made him “Conservator of the Staple at Veere” – a Dutch town with a large Scottish population where his role was to protect Scottish trading privileges. He encouraged George Watson in pursuing a successful business career in the Netherlands. George

returned to Scotland and continued to build his fortune; he was appointed the first Treasurer of the Bank of Scotland on its formation. On his death in 1721 his fortune was left in Trust and used to found George Watson’s College. The sixteenth century Curriehill mansion was altered, extended and refurbished several times in the nineteenth century. The Marshalls, last Lords of Curriehill, extended it and also incorporated parts of the ruined castle into barn on the estate. In the 1880s a wealthy cotton mill owner called Archibald Buchanan purchased the Curriehill and Newmills estates, 1) and invested a large sum of money in a complete refurbishment of Curriehill House. He staffed the property with two gardeners, three house servants, and a coachman for his five coaches. His daughter Julia became the wife of Sir James Gibson of Riccarton. After laying empty for a period at the beginning of the twentieth century Curriehill was tenanted by several different families until it was acquired in 1955 by a pig farmer who converted the castle
ruins into a piggery and reduced the 16th century mansion to its present size. The estate was finally sold to a developer, and the new Newmills housing built on the lands. All that remains today is a portion of the original mansion house which is a private home. With thanks to Mr Andrew Peden of Curriehill House.

When is a denture not a denture? Many people put up with loose and uncomfortable dentures, making eating difficult and lowering self-confidence. At No9 Dental Practice we can provide advanced alternatives to traditional dentures by using dental implants. These can fix a denture with a studlike fastening, keeping the denture firmly in place and removing the need for a plate in the roof of the mouth.
We recently fitted an implantretained denture for Mrs Callan, who said: “I am delighted with the result, I wish I had done it long before now. It has been worth every penny. I have been recommending it to all my friends. I can smile and chew confidently now.”

Spike at Party in the Park
Spike Allibone Balerno-based Spike Allibone’s day job can be stomach-churning. Split-second decision making, momentous highs (and the constant threat of crashing lows) would alarm most people. Not Spike. He runs his own events company, Night Train Productions, organizing festivals, corporate shows and roadshows on a huge scale. He also directs and showcalls for TV and rock n’ roll. And yes, before you ask, Spike does get to work with some extraordinarily famous people. But it’s a serious business. He is responsible for the seamless running of hugely expensive events with enormous complicated sets, multi-screened video presentations, music, lighting and pyrotechnics. Clients are corporate giants and megastars. So, no pressure then. “Several crews may work in tandem, dismantling and assembling equipment. Everything (perhaps in 15 articulated lorries) must arrive on time in the right place,” he tells me. “On one occasion, a set supposed to be in New York, turned out to be on a scheduled flight for London! The plane was about to take off, but we got it turned around and unloaded!” The set in place, Spike breaks down every technical effect into its actions, writing a script describing who does what, when and where during the show. As showcaller, communicating via headset, he gives instructions to the sound, light and any other special effect technicians throughout the show. “Every cue is timed to the split second. Mistakes would be seen by as many as 25,000 people in some venues.” “One showcaller accidentally turned two pages of his script and gave the wrong cue during an important Chinese political rally event. The curtains rose early, revealing technicians on scaffolding towers, preparing the next scene. In panic, they fled the stage, pulling the towers in opposite directions. But being connected by electric cables
14
at the top, the towers jerked suddenly throwing heavy data projectors onto the stage. The rally ended abruptly and the showcaller left in tears. The Chinese clients were none too pleased either.” “When I’m showcalling, I’m thinking about lots of things all at once. I’m watching the show, giving instructions, planning ahead, listening to the crew on headphones, and timing cues with a stopwatch. I need 100% concentration. Any unplanned changes on stage mean the sweat is really on!” “The 2005 World Music Awards Ceremony in Earls Court was a huge event with huge personalities to boot. Anything could happen that night.” It did. American actress/singer Lindsay Lohan was struggling to find her way to the stage, German rock group Tokio Hotel were furious because they never actually got to perform at all, and their passports were stolen from their dressing room (they were due on a plane to Japan the next morning!), and meanwhile a choir of children singing “We Are the World” waited nervously on stage for Michael Jackson to get out of his car and appear with them. Nothing went as planned and tension gripped the backstage crew. “The audience were completely unaware of what was going on, but I remember that show very well!” Making it work, whatever happens, is Spike’s passion. And he loves to hear, “That was the best show I’ve ever seen!” If you saw the Help for Heroes concert in London last year, or perhaps saw the Dancing on Ice Tour, you will have seen examples of Spike’s spectacular work. He tells me he is currently producing the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations for 2012. (Momentarily, I imagine the Queen with microphone and pyrotechnics.) One thing is certain, she is in good hands. Spike will make sure her celebrations are second to none.

Friendship Blooms with Vicky’s Flowers and the Konect Directory
T
he winner of our Friendship Blooms competition was Eileen Craw of Currie. She was nominated by her friend who said this : “I would like to nominate Eileen Craw for a bouquet of flowers because she helps young and old in our community. She plays the piano for mothers and toddlers in Balerno, also at nursery and the Balerno playgroup. She helps with the old folks’ club in Currie and is always taking friends and neighbours to hospital appointments etc. During the bad winter she trudged 16
through the snow and ice with shopping for various old folks. She is a wonderful friend to many and when I saw this item about Friendship Blooms in the Konect Directory I just had to write and tell you about Eileen.” Vicky Speirs of Vicky’s Flowers presented Eileen with a well-deserved beautiful bouquet.

Turn your house into a home By Karen Murray
W
ith over twenty years’ experience in styling homes with blinds, curtains and accessories, familyrun business Style Rite Blinds will guide you through the process of turning your house into a home. Established by Paul Mitchell working alongside Audrey and Peter, the company offers not only a wide range of blinds and curtains to suit all homes - from a single roller blind to a full range of conservatory blinds - but a free measuring service too. The best way to see the range is of course to pop in to the showroom at Dedridge East Industrial Estate, when you can browse in comfort and pick out styles and colours. You will receive a friendly welcome with a professional approach and the personal touch. When it comes to blinds, you might think a blind is blind but there you’d be mistaken. There are wooden blinds, Venetian blinds, vertical, roman and roller blinds as well as conservatory blinds and all in a number of styles. Roller blinds these days come with a fitted pelmet and can be fixed to open up to the exact point at which you want them to open. Points to note are things such as the safety angle - to alleviate any worries over child safety, you can choose blinds that come with a uni wand control for extra piece of mind. If you don’t want holes in your walls, tiles or window frames, then Perfect Fit or Intu blinds are for you. There is no drilling required - they have a frame which integrates into your existing window or uses a discreet head rail and almost invisible side rails. They are perfect for tilt and turn windows and conservatory.
system from America with the frame and shutter all in one. Another American import are PVC vertical blinds which are very durable and easily wiped clean. However, it might be that you want the softer look of curtains and again, Style Rite has a style and colour to suit any environment. “We continually update the designs and make sure there are always the latest styles available,” smiles Paul. A visit to the showroom will give you a great starting point and all curtains are made to measure, with a visit to your home ensuring a perfect fit. Paul and the team are happy to make recommendations if you are unsure which way to go and the manufacturing work is carried out above the showroom. So when you are looking to restyle your home, pop in to Style Rite’s showroom and see the wide range they have to offer. You can contact Style Rite on

Vet’s Tip: Rabbit Care – Diet
T
he domestic rabbit is not far removed from its wild relatives we see hopping around our local roundabouts. Therefore, our fluffy bunnies we have at home should be eating a similar diet. Yet many owners believe that a bowl of bunny muesli and the odd carrot will be enough. Wild rabbits do not have the convenience of being handed a large bowl of nuggets or muesli to eat every day – their main diet is grass, dried grasses, weeds, twigs and wild flowers. A rabbit’s daily diet should consist of 80% hay/fresh grass, 15% vegetables and fruit, and just 5% pelleted food. The way that a rabbit eats hay and grass provides wear to its teeth, as the jaw is moved from side to side. Rabbits have continually growing teeth and hay/grass is the only substance
Claylands Cottage Cattery ...for contented cats
that prevents teeth from overgrowing. Pelleted food (either nuggets or muesli) is chewed with an up and down motion of the jaw, so provides no wearing down of the teeth. Rabbit muesli is often high in sugars and low in fibre, neither of which are good. Nuggets (where every pellet is the same) mean the rabbit cannot select the good bits out the food (like many do with muesli), and are much higher in fibre. So if your bunny’s diet consists of muesli and not much else – it’s time for a change! Pile in the hay (as much as they want – it has no calories!), explore the veg aisle in the supermarket and cut down on those pellets. Your bunny will have a much happier, healthier life. Balerno’s Red Road Ramble By Karen Murray
T
here are various places to start this walk but if you don’t live in Balerno and want to use the bus service to get to the start, then the best place is the bus terminus in Balerno on the corner of Cockburn Crescent and Mansfield Road. Head away from the buses towards the Red Moss Nature Reserve but after only a few yards you will see a turning on your left, signed Malleny Millgate. I’ve noticed this road many times driving past it but have never ventured down. On the day I did this walk, it was lovely and sunny and I revelled in the leafy avenue with the sun dappling through the trees; open fields of barley to the right and enticing little woodland paths to the left.

Image 1) The red road
Now called Malleny Millgate, this road was once known as the Red Road - a name that dates back to the 1800s when there were no houses here and the road was surfaced with red shale. Stroll along past some rather nice dwellings and you will eventually come to an old bridge over the Bavelaw Burn. It is quite relaxing just leaning on the bridge and watching the burn tumbling down. The bridge was built in 1805. Continue over the bridge where the road becomes a rough track and up onto Harlaw Road where you turn left. As you walk down Harlaw Road you’ll see Harmeny Community Woodland on the left into which you can take a detour. The wood has been cleaned up with the

A little further down the road, you might spot a wooded hill on the right which is locally known as ‘the tip’. It is a man made spoil heap made up of paper waste - left over from Balerno’s papermaking days.
Just after this is a turning into a housing estate - Harlaw Gait. At the end of this you’ll find a gateway onto to a cycle path and footpath signed Malleny Gardens.

then Mansfield Road, or you could go through Bavelaw Gardens and Millbank in a slightly less direct route. The route is around two miles long and as much of the terrain is on tarmac it is relatively easy. Do watch out for vehicles and ensure you take note of your surroundings from the historical aspects relating to the papermaking days to the flora and fauna when you are on the more rural parts of the walk.
The terrain changes entirely at this point from suburban housing to overgrown woodland and once in the woodland - known as Sawpit Wood from the days when logs were sawn into planks in the ‘sawpits’ - you feel you could be far away from civilisation. A narrow and overgrown path twists and turns through the wood with 2) an open area in the middle until you come to a little wooden bridge of a burn and out onto the Lymphoy Road. Turn left and walk down the lane with Malleny House and Gardens on the left - if you have time, the gardens are well worth a visit - and Currie Rugby Club on the right. The simplest way back to the bus terminus is to walk directly up Bavelaw Road and

Recipe and September Food Notes By Anne Pinkerton
S
eptember is an exciting month for food. Early autumn brings the start of the fruit harvest, mushrooms, nuts and game are all coming into season. Peaches are at their cheapest, grapes from Europe are delicious, plumbs and damsons arrive from England and apples and brambles are ready to gather here. One of September’s pleasures is blackberry picking. It is the perfect reason for an extended slow walk along byways or canal paths. You can listen to the birds and hear the buzz of insects and enjoy the last of the wild flowers having sunshine on your back the while. Somehow you forget the nettle stings, the scratches and the sticky-willy stuck to you clothes! Blackberries or brambles are part of the same botanic group as raspberries and can be cross-bred to create hybrids such as tayberry or loganberry. They are more esteemed in Britain than in other countries and they marry really well with our apples and can be made into jams, jellies and puddings. A few fruits added to a beef or venison stew enriches the dish. Here there is a long tradition of fruit with meat, for example pork and apple sauce or lamb with redcurrant jelly. Also good early autumn food! When you get your harvest home, if you do not need to use it right away the brambles can be frozen in a plastic box or double plastic bags. Used later in the winter they will remind you of the good time and purple-stained hands you had finding them. The simplest way to enjoy brambles without the pips is to make a fool.

Bramble fool 500 gm brambles, 2 tablespoons sugar, ½ pint whipping cream. In a heavy bottomed pan stew the fruit with some sugar very slowly with just enough water to stop the berries catching or burning. When they are soft and pulpy sieve them through a nylon sieve and mix them with an equal quantity of whipped cream. Pour into glasses and chill. Decorate with a whole berry on top. Lemon berry pudding 250g brambles layered on the bottom of a straight sided oven-proof dish (1pt. soufflé dish is perfect) 30gm butter 120g sugar 1 lemon: rind grated and juice squeezed 2 standard eggs, separated: mix the yolks with the milk ¼ pt milk 30g plain flour Whipped cream to serve if liked. Cream the butter with half of the sugar, add the lemon rind and juice and beat well. Add the milk/egg mixture little by little to the sugar/ butter mixture alternating with the flour. Mix in the rest of the sugar. Whip the egg whites till stiff but not dry; fold the eggs into the lemon mixture. Pour over the brambles in their dish. Bake for 40mins at mark5 or 180oC till top is browned and underneath there is a delicious sauce in the brambles. Serve hot, cooling or cold.

Blackberry and Apple jelly 1 kilo brambles 1 kilo apples cut up roughly (wind-falls or a mixture of cookers and eaters. It does not matter what they look like because you need them to set the jelly and bulk out the brambles.) 1pt water Juice of 1 lemon Sugar. The amount depends on the volume of juice you get from the brambles. Cook the fruit very gently with the water in a large pan or a jam pan if possible. Strain the fruit and all the liquid through a fine cloth or jelly bag. This can be done by tying a piece of clean old sheet onto the legs of an upturned chair or stool; or by putting the cloth over a basin, pouring in the fruit and then gathering the edges together, tying them with a longish piece of string and hanging the whole thing up to drip into the bowl. This is NOT as complicated as it sounds and the pip-free jelly is well worth the effort. Leave for 12 hours or till all the juice is collected. Do not be tempted to squeeze the bag because you will have a cloudy jelly. Measure the liquid and to each pint add 450gm sugar. Put the lemon juice in now. Bring slowly to the boil and then boil rapidly till a teaspoon of liquid sets on a cold plate or saucer. Have ready clean, warm jam-jars. Fill the pots and cover with lids or cellophane jam covers.

The most traditional of all - Bramble and Apple Pie. Just add brambles to your apples when you make a pie. 1 packet puff pastry or ready rolled pastry or If you make your own short crust pastry the yield from 360g flour and 180g butter 200g peeled and sliced cooking apples 200g brambles:- any proportion of the 2 fruits will be delicious Sugar to taste Line a metal flan or pie dish with pastry. Put all the fruit in the pie, sprinkle over the sugar. Wet the edge of the bottom layer of pastry. Cover the pie with the second round of pastry and press the edges together. The wet edge helps it stay together. Seal the pie edge in whatever pattern you prefer. Pushing it with a fork or cutting and folding the edge all look pretty. Make a hole on the top to let out the steam. Scatter a little sugar over the pie or brush with a little milk. This makes the resulting dish look even better in the end. Cook 200oC or gas 6 for 40 mins or till golden. Let the pie cool a little before cutting into it. Boiling fruit sugar is very hot. Serve with cream, custard or thick yoghurt. If there is any left over it is still good cold.

Terry Pratchett and Ian Rankin launch new novels There is nothing like a good book to get you through the winter months and two commercial greats of the literary world release new novels on 13th October. In Sir Terry Pratchett’s 50th book and 39th Discworld novel, ‘Snuff’, Sam Vimes investigates a country house murder. Closer to home in Fife, Malcolm Fox and his team from Internal Affairs are back in the latest book from Ian Rankin. ‘The Impossible Dead’ has Fox involved with conspiracy, cover up, a brutal murder, letter bombs and kidnapping in a case that spans 25 years. Tony Bennett croons with Amy Winehouse The music industry will be gearing up for the release of those all important Christmas albums next month. All ears will be on the second duet album from Tony Bennett in early October. If you like your gaming to be slightly more traditional with a modern twist then ‘Angry Birds Knock on Wood’ may be more your style. Based on the popular i Phone app your mission is to build a structure before the Angry Birds get an attempt to knock it down. Kids from 5 will love it.
OUTSIDE West Port Book Festival West Port claims to be Edinburgh’s answer to Soho. Each year ten venues, from second hand bookshops to crisp art spaces via whisky scented pubs, get together for the annual West Port Book Festival. This year’s festival runs from 13-16 October. Jump off a bridge for charity What are you doing on the 2nd October? Fancy seeing one of engineering’s greatest triumphs by dangling 165 feet from the Forth Road Bridge? This charity event is in aid of Deaf Blind Scotland and you can find out more at their website www.deafblindscotland.org.uk

Mountain Film Festival You and 2000 other outdoor enthusiasts don’t have to climb up to the George Square Theatre to enjoy the Mountain Film Festival but it may urge you to give it a go! Climbers, skiers, kayakers and explorers will enjoy a weekend full of film, photography and lectures from 6-9th October. More details at their website www.emff.co.uk . Prior to this event the British Dryslope Ski Championships take place on 24th & 25th September at Midlothian Ski Centre. More details at www.fis-ski.com. Mushroom Knowledge How do mushrooms get their spotty appearance? Don’t know the answer? No, don’t google it! This is the ‘Outside’section. Get down to Dalkeith Country Estate to find out at their Fughi Family Fun Day on 2nd October, 2pm – 3.30pm. Another family day out is the East Lothian Multicultural Event at Prestongrange Museum on Sunday 18 September, 12 til 6pm. This is now in its third year and has entertainment inspired from cultures around the world, including music, dancing, singing, acrobats, food and crafts. Or on the same day you may prefer an Introduction to Letter Cutting with Natalie Taylor at Jupiter Artland. Natalie is an Edinburgh based artist who incorporates living plants in her work. Find out more about her at www.nataliejtaylor.com.
Another secret agent coming out of semi retirement is accident prone Johnny English, reborn but still played by comedy genius Rowan Atkinson. English has to prevent international terrorists from eliminating a world leader and causing global terror. No pressure there then! Music Festivals Tony Bennett may be on your CD player at home but you can enjoy plenty of live music this month. The Linlithgow Music Festival takes place from 7th-11th and if the weather is good the square at the foot of Linlithgow Palace is a great place to listen and dance to free music. As the Linlithgow Festival ends the Bathgate Music Festival begins until 17th September with events in and around the Regal Theatre during lunchtime and in the evening. You can then quickly catch ‘The Poozies’, Scotland’s best loved all girl folk band, at the Howden Park Centre, Livingston on 22nd September before dropping into our very own ‘biggest little music festival’ in Balerno from the end of September to early October. The popular ‘Jazz Party’ is already sold out so check out www. balernomusicfestival.org.uk for latest ticket information.
Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spies... At a cinema near you in October Gary Oldman stars as George Smiley in the film version of ‘Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy’.
