The delightful cover of this month's Konect was designed by Laura Somerville of Balbardie Primary School. We ran a design competition in the school last month and were thrilled with all the fantastic entries - it was very difficult to pick the winner! There are two runners-up, and you can see their designs and read more about it on pages 32 - 33.
Message from the Editor
Bathgate's gala – the “John Newland Festival” to give its proper name - is almost here and we've got a special feature about it to celebrate on pages 10 – 11. And with thoughts turning to the summer at last, we've put together a guide to help you get fit and in shape for the season. We've teamed up with Norton House Health Club in Ingliston to run a fantastic competition as part of this feature. You could win one month's family membership and a spa day for two! Every entrant will receive a complimentary day pass for two, so well worth entering! In addition, they are offering an exclusive joining offer for Konect readers, see pages 22-23 for details of the joining offer and competition. Congratulations to Lucy Wason who won the Tesco competition in the April issue. And a big thank you to everyone who entered our reader survey. We loved reading all the positive comments and also your ideas for what should be included in Konect. We are collating the responses and will be focusing on your suggestions in upcoming issues.

John Newland Festival – What's it all about? By Helen-Jane Shearer Bathgate's annual fortnight of summer festivities - the John Newland Festival, culminating with the Bathgate Procession - is one of the biggest events in the West Lothian gala season. And the story behind it is quite different from any of the other galas. So who was John Newland and why is he celebrated in Bathgate? One of the many Scots who sailed to the West Indies in the 18th century to make their fortunes out of sugar and slaves, John Newland was a Bathgate resident who would have been forgotten - left Bathgate, got rich on sugar plantations in Jamaica and died there - except that he decided to name his native town of Bathgate in his will, stipulating that a school should be built. He was born in 1737 and his family lived in Bathgate. We know very little about his personal life either here or in Jamaica, where by 1768 he had settled and was running a sugar plantation. He may have been influenced to name his home town as beneficiary by a visit from Dr Corbett of Hopetoun Inn at the time. In any case he became rich, like so many others, off the slave labour on his plantations and he died in Jamaica in 1799. The estate he left was valued at around £48,000 - including 100 or so black slaves valued at about £15,000. But his will was not clear in all its details; the estate was to be sold by the executors of his will, and the proceeds passed to named trustees to be invested for 10 years; the interest earned was to be used to build a school in Bathgate. Ladies in Waiting

Several relatives were named to receive small amounts of money, but it wasn't clear who was to get the £48,000. So the will was disputed by his relatives and a settlement wasn't reached until 1815. A large proportion of the money was used up to meet the cost of the lengthy litigation. In the end, the Trustees were given £14,500 for the school, and Bathgate Academy was built in 1833 - the building which still stands today on Majoribanks Street. (It was in fact one of several schools built from Newland's bequest, with other smaller schools also built in the area). Alexander Majoribanks was one of the local Trustees who contested Newland's will in favour of the town. The first Newland's Day was celebrated on 17th April 1843, ten years after the completion of the Bathgate Academy. The Newland's Oration was added in 1933, the centenary of the Academy. The oration used to take place in the Academy Hall, but since the the original Academy has been converted into flats, the oration is now held in Bathgate High Church and is always delivered by a former pupil or notable Bathgate personality on the Friday night prior to Procession day. This year's Marjory, Walter and pages.
Fundraising Every penny counts when it comes to funding for the Bathgate gala. The committee depends on donations, council support, business sponsorship and street collections. There is a street collection on George Street 24th May from 10am to 4pm - please attend and give generously! The gala costs approx £50,000 every year and the committee is wholly responsible for raising this money and organising the whole event.
Bathgate Procession Newland's Day has been celebrated almost every year since its inauguration - and every year without fail since 1961 making it the longest-running uninterrupted gala event in West Lothian, thanks to the dedicated committee who work hard behind the scenes all year round. It now takes place on the first Saturday of June (this year the 7th June) and over the years other events had been added so the full programme now includes two weeks of activities in the lead up to Newland's Day itself. The festivities are designed to have something for everyone within the town and include children's and adults' sporting events, a quiz night, music, treasure hunt and BBQ. The day itself starts with solo drummers parading the town to awake everyone for the day ahead. There are bands, a decorated vehicle competition, judging of decorated houses and at 11am a pageant ceremony involving 120 characters from Bathgate's history, played by local children. The historical pageant is still held on the steps of the Academy on the morning of Procession. This includes a re-enactment of the handing of the keys to Bathgate Castle by Robert the Bruce to his daughter Marjory and her husband Walter Stewart (founders of the Stewart dynasty).
At 12 noon the Bathgate Procession leaves the Old Academy and consists of children from all nursery, primary and some secondary school children, uniformed groups and other groups represented from the town. Last year it took a full 45 minutes for the Procession to pass any one spot on its route through the town! It ends in Meadow Park for an afternoon of family fun and entertainment including music, stalls, fairground attractions, and, in the main arena, the committee usually manage to secure some spectacular shows. This year we have “The Royal Signals White Helmets” Motorcycle Display Team and “Riders of the Storm” trick riding and equestrian stunt team. Outwith the main arena but very popular is Titan The Robot – a great crowd pleaser. The day ends with a torchlight procession and fireworks display....and brief respite for the committee until they start the planning for next year's event! The full programme of events will be coming through your door soon – hand delivered by the dedicated members of the festival Committee! Lord Lyon 2014

Get in Shape for the Summer Your Local Guide to Health and Fitness The weather is improving, summer holidays booked for the lucky ones who are getting away, layers of thick cover-up clothing coming off... it's a good time to be thinking about getting fit and losing a bit of excess weight. In fact it's always a good time to think about improving fitness, so the konect team have been speaking to a lot of people involved in the fitness industry locally to pull together some ideas for you. Humans are complicated and there is no such thing as one solution that suits everyone. But we've come up with an astounding variety of options all available in the local area, and regardless of your current fitness level, age, interests and time you have available, you'll be able to find something to suit you. From gentle walking with a group through to serious fitness training such as Crossfit Bathgate, there is a huge range of activities that you can do in a group or individually. Martial arts for adults and children (you may have seen Kuk Sool Won demonstrations in the Centre at Livingston or in Bathgate for example), dance classes, cycling, swimming, even wrestling - an energetic new Livingston-based company Reckless Intent aims to “help bring back a respectable wrestling scene to West Lothian... and offer opportunities that enable people to be involved in something positive and to help them develop skills needed in everyday life.” We've spoken to personal trainers, specialists in post-surgery fitness, local nutritionist Edyta who has provided a healthy recipe this month too. The Clubs and Classes section at the back of konect each month is always a good source of ideas for joining a fitness class or taking up a new skill that involves physical activity.
The following are a few fun suggestions to help get you started, but always take the advice of the health and fitness professionals represented in this feature. 1 Fitness is a habit If you approach each task everyday with a view to how it can improve your fitness you'll be amazed at how, for example, not being able to find a parking space near the shop or venue you want becomes a positive thing, not a problem! Yay, I get to walk an extra 250 metres! Might even have to run if I'm a bit late too! Take the stairs not the lift – often repeated but actually true and you'll be surprised how it can change your attitude. 2 Will power is limited ... ... and let's face it, losing weight does require willpower, be it to get to your exercise class or to change your eating habits. So if you're dealing with other stresses in life that are taking up your reserves of selfcontrol and endurance, you'll find it harder to resist over-eating or skipping your class when you're tired. View your fitness time as time-out for you from your other stresses, not just another chore that you have to fit in. And it is easier to resist junk food when you're just back from a work-out and feeling good, rather than at home feeling overwhelmed and consoling yourself with a sweet treat. 3 Morning light helps you lose weight! No this isn't a joke... a recent study shows that people exposed to natural light in the morning are leaner than those exposed to light later in the day. And it has nothing to do with physical activity, calorie intake, age or season! It has to do with body clock and metabolism - as I said above, humans are complicated but if you're looking to lose weight and need all the help you can get, get outside in the natural light in the morning. 4 Calories eaten < calories expended = beach figure If only it were that simple. Cutting calories is an effective way to lose weight, but it has to be done in a sensible and healthy way and ideally in conjunction with regular exercise. You can't go too wrong with eating plenty of fruit and veg (the new recommendation is 7 portions a day) and cutting down on the cakes and biscuits.

TNESS SPECIAL * FITNESS SPECIAL * FITNESS SPECIAL * FITNESS SPECIAL * FITNESS SPECIAL * FITNESS SPECIAL * FITNESS S Grapefruit juice is a great appetite suppressant – take it like medicine in the morning to stave off the sweet cravings. Use smaller plates/bowls to reduce your serving size, or give yourself a rule of “no seconds.” Be sensible – going without food completely is not a healthy choice, neither is crash dieting! Consulting a nutritionist is well worth it even if you only need to make small changes to your diet as they can devise a diet that is sustainable and enjoyable for you. 5 Getting children involved early in sport sets up good habits for life, and, as for adults, there is something to suit all tastes locally. Martial arts
classes are a popular choice - Kuk Sool Won is a very friendly group with a large children's section called the “Wee Warriors” and many families have parents and children attending classes. Astro Gymnastics in Livingston start off with a pre-school programme called “Shooting Stars.” And of course there is always the excellent skate park and BMX tracks. We hope this feature encourages and inspires you to make some positive changes. There really is something for everyone, so whatever your goals, look through these pages and you will find something to suit you. Even one small change is better than nothing at all. So there is no excuse!

Konect with exercise by Michael Smith, Personal Best, Armadale Exercise is good for us, but with so many different ways to exercise it’s hard to know which is best. Michael Smith, an exercise professional from Personal Best in Armadale, reviews High Intenisty Interval Training (HIIT) and why the fitness industry is going crazy for it. If you want to spend less time exercising, reduce body fat, promote muscle tone and have a session that can be adapted specifically for individuals then HIIT may be exactly what you are looking for! Less time exercising and great results – HIIT is designed to be quick. Short sessions and efficient workouts that are perfect for busy people. Less body fat – Accelerating and decelerating during exercising burns lots of calories. The change of pace not only keeps exercise fresh, but the additional calories burned benefit reducing body fat. As well as burning more calories HIIT releases hormones that target body fat.
The combination of cortisol and growth hormone produced during HIIT targets body fat as an energy source. More fat used, less fat stored. Specific to you – HIIT does not need to be top speed. It can be adapted to any individual by changing the work/ rest duration and intensity. Exercises can also be adapted for injuries and health conditions. It does not need to be high impact; it does not need to use your whole body it can be tailored around your needs by an exercise professional. Value for money – Shorter time means reduced prices such as the Personal Best Insanity package. We always recommend you seek the advice of an exercise professional, before taking on a new exercise regime, especially if you have specific injuries or health conditions. For more information on HIIT training contact Mikey on Michael@personalbestuk.com.

Happy Walking by Karen Murray My walking exploits tend to be dictated by the pathways available en route to a business meeting or waiting while a child attends some sporting class or another. Where there is a section of pathway that can be walked or run while I am out and about, I try to fit in the time to do it. I do like to venture further afield and enjoy a full day’s walking in the hills but that of course requires planning and often but not always entails going further afield. You might wonder why all the ‘exercise squeezing in’ - is it not too much trouble? Why bother? Well of course the top reason is one of health and wellbeing. We all know physical activity is good for your body. However physical activity is also good for mental health and is one of the main reasons I do all the ‘squeezing in’.
the hidden beauty of the Petershill Wildlife Reserve. Cairnpapple Hill or the old Korean War Memorial the other side of Bathgate are sometimes included if I have more time. When driving anywhere that takes me past the Lizzie Bryce roundabout in Livingston I pull into the layby just after it on the A71 and walk down the steps to walk along the paths of the Calderwood along the Murieston Water. There are then myriad paths spiralling their way through the woods and you can wander for as long as you have time.
Regular exercise can boost your self-esteem and help you concentrate, sleep, feel and even look better and it can make you happy! The fact that endorphins are released in your brain when you exercise has got to be a number one reason to do it we all want to feel happy. So let’s look at a few plus points for regular exercise: • decreased stress • increased energy • improved sleep • better focus • sense of achievement • reduced anger and frustration • healthy appetite Now to see how and where you can fit in a short walk. There are numerous walking routes all over West Lothian and the surrounds and I just try and factor in a little extra time between appointments or while taxi-ing kids around to make sure I can add in a walk or run. I always take the A89 rather than the M8 so that I can take my constitutional in the grounds of the old Bangour Hospital or further along the road in
18
I go for opportunity, grabbing it when I can but I do intend to make more time now the lighter nights are here and pick some more of the scenic routes to try out. There are several Nature Reserves I have not yet visited so they will be on my summer list. Of course as it is exercise we are discussing, when the weather really is foul or if you have no other option, there is always Mall Walking - which as the name suggests is getting your exercise walking around the shopping centre. And why not I say? The fresh air might the missing but the endorphins will be released nonetheless!

Citrine for May by The Stone Ring This mineral is often known as the Merchant's Stone. It is one of the few stones that assist in helping to acquire wealth as well as maintaining it. Citrine is excellent for dissipating and transmuting negative energies as it does not accumulate or hold on to them, which means it never needs to be cleared or cleansed. Citrine helps with working out problems on both the physical and subtle levels and is extremely good at balancing the yin and yang energy and aligning the chakras with the ethereal plane. Citrine works with the sacral and solar plexus as this is where our personal power and creativity centre. It activates and energizes these energy centers helping to enhance our physical bodies

Front Cover Design Competition Balbardie Primary School
In conjunction with Scholastic Books, we ran a competition last month in Balbardie Primary School for the front cover design of this month's magazine. The theme was “Walter and Marjorie” or “John Newland” to help celebrate the local festival season. The quality of the submissions was superb. We were thrilled and impressed with all the beautiful artwork. A big well done and thank you to all the pupils from P4 to P7 who handed in their designs, it was a huge pleasure to go through them all ... and very difficult to choose the winners! The Konect team spent a very long time considering the designs and we only wished we had more prizes to hand out as there were many deserving entries.
Winner: Laura Somerville Design on front cover. Laura chooses a book from Scholastic, and a family month pass to Paradise Island Golf, Livingston.
Second Prize: Iona Downie Iona chooses a book from Scholastic, and a family day pass to Jupiter Artland

What Do Tarot Readers Do? by Bernie Rowen CG Jung coined the phrase “synchronicity”; this has meant many different things to different people. The actual meaning according to Jung is ‘synchronicities are meaningful coincidence’. When a tarot reader sees a card in a particular placement in a reading s/he would translate the symbolism depicted in the card and put it into the context of the client’s life. When the client draws the cards, contemplating their question, the moment in time that this takes place carries information, as universal consciousness is available to be tapped into. It is understood by academics and mystics alike that the symbolism of tarot has evolved and that it doesn’t have a clear cut history as to how it has come to be the card system that it is today.
34 konect
When you consult a reader it is a very good idea to have a clear question in mind; the cards might show that a different area of your life requires your attention. To learn more give Bernie a call to make an appointment on 07736 067227. Bernie Rowen is a registered psychotherapist with many a modality under her belt. She brings a fresh idea to counseling and talking therapy by the inclusion of astrology data to develop the most individual treatment possible, so why not invest in yourself?

then this is still open to you. The occasional stodgy filler (“Your Sister Can’t Twist”) and an ill-judged cod-Jamaican vocal (“Jamaican Jerk-Off”) do little damage overall to what is probably the high-water mark of the John/Taupin partnership. Venturing onto disc two, the initial nine songs are a strange and half-hearted tribute whereby various current artists (and credit where due, not the most obvious) tackle a selection of tracks resulting in the all-time low of Fall Out Boy's unnecessary version of "Saturday Nights Alright For Fighting". The remainder of disc 2 is a high quality recording of Elton in concert in 1973, even if only four of the eight live songs relate to the album.
Music Review
The Regal Music Club by James Kerr
A monster double LP in lavishly illustrated gatefold sleeve on first release in October 1973, Elton John's ninth album "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" has hit its fortieth birthday with 2CD and mammoth 4CD/DVD versions.
To get the entire 1973 Hammersmith Odeon concert along with a pile of demos, B sides, early takes and documentary DVD you have to splash out for the "Super Deluxe" edition. Possibly only of interest if you have lived with the album for forty years, want an alternative path down the yellow brick road, and are prepared to say goodbye to about £40.
In the widely promoted 2CD version, the original 17 tracks fit comfortably onto one disc so if you want to stay true to the classic run from “Funeral to a Friend” through to “Harmony” and all stops in-between,
The Regal Music Club meets fortnightly on Wednesdays at the Regal Theatre, Bathgate, 7.30pm to 9.30pm. Visit https://www.facebook.com/RegalMusicClub for more info, or just drop in. £2 including refreshments.

Local Life
Bathgate Concert Orchestra The Bathgate Concert Orchestra is the only amateur orchestra in West Lothian. Our aim is to provide an opportunity for local musicians to come together to improve their skills and prepare concert programmes for all to enjoy. Our President is councillor John McGinty and our musical director and conductor is Marco Marzella. We are a friendly, enthusiastic group of musicians and are always happy to welcome new players of whatever level. We rehearse on Friday evenings during school term time from 7:30pm-9:30pm at St John’s Church Bathgate. Anyone interested in coming along to join us should contact the Secretary Joan Proven (see contact details below). If you don’t play an instrument but enjoy listening to live music then why not come along to one of our concerts which are held in the Spring, Autumn and at Christmas time. The orchestra was established in 1952 and we celebrated our 50th year anniversary in 2012 with two concerts with the collaboration of local choirs. The orchestra performed the Messiah in St Michael’s Church Linlithgow as a celebration of the millennium in 2000. This year’s spring concert is a celebration of the Scottish Homecoming year and the hosting of the Commonwealth Games in Scotland.
The spring programme includes: The Hebridean Overture’ by Mendelssohn The Braveheart soundtrack Chariots of Fire Nimrod by Elgar Land of the Mountain and the Flood and some Scottish traditional favourites to get your feet tapping. The concert will be held in the Regal Theatre Bathgate on Friday 16th May at 7:30pm with guest performance by ‘Saxes & Sevens’, a small group of local saxophonists who play a range of music from classic swing favourites to lesser know pieces and arrangements. Tickets £10/£6 are available from the Regal Theatre Box Office on 01506 630085. There will also be a concert with the same programme held in the Kirk of Calder, Mid Calder on Friday 23rd May at 7:30pm. This concert welcomes all. It is not ticketed and entry is by donation. We look forward to welcoming you to our concerts and hope you enjoy the music. Property Matters
Track Your Sale By Craig Turpie One of the greatest frustrations in the moving process can be poor communication. If you are buying or selling, we believe you’ll want to know exactly what progress is being made, immediately and with transparency. Not only that, but as we are fully accountable to you, you deserve to know what we are doing and how effectively we are working on your behalf! Our solution is a powerful online tracking service that provides you with access to every aspect of your sale, updated in real-time. For example you can log on to your dedicated page on our website and instantly see what marketing activity has been undertaken, who has viewed, what their comments on your property are, whether they will be coming back for a second viewing or thinking of submitting an offer. And what about when a sale has been agreed? In the past, trying to then get hold of your solicitor was seldom easy, with some clients
42 konect
even feeling guilty for interrupting their solicitor’s “important” work! We liaise with solicitors at every stage and ensure that as progress is made towards conclusion of missives, it is recorded online so that you have access to this information 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. All of this means that you are always fully up to speed with progress. It also makes it easier for us to spot and resolve any areas of potential delay before they occur! The internet age might have depersonalised many aspects of our lives. However, when so much hangs on the speed and efficiency of the sales and legal process, it’s good to know that on-line tracking is one use of technology that has certainly been harnessed for the better. Oh and by the way – we do still talk to our clients as well! It’s one of the most enjoyable parts of our job. So rest assured we’ll never allow the technology to stand in the way of that.

Spotlight on
Karma Officially the best curry It is officially the best curry.....Karma Indian Restaurant and Takeaway in Whitburn were winners of the 2013 British Curry Awards “Best in Scotland” category. And they were short-listed in the top 100 in the whole of the UK. So having heard rave reviews of them from local friends, I went along to the Karma to try their food and find out the secret of their success. Stepping off West Main Street in Whitburn into Karma is like stepping into a different world. You feel straight away that this is a special venue – the décor and impeccably laid tables speak of attention to detail, while the cosy and intimate atmosphere makes you feel instantly relaxed. You know you're in good hands even before the very attentive staff welcome you. “There is no special secret to our success,” owner Robert tells me. “Food, service and presentation are all equally important to us, and we cook and serve food the way we would want to eat it. So everything has to be perfect, it's as simple as that.” Robert has been running the Karma for 12 years. He took over what was at the time a shambolic business and totally transformed it. He noticed the restaurant on the market, put in a speculative offer and, to his surprise it was accepted! Robert was working for an Indian restaurant chain in Glasgow at the time but decided to set up his own restaurant when the opportunity presented itself in Whitburn. And he has never looked back. “It wasn't easy for the first couple of years,” he explains. He had to overcome the reputation that the previous restaurant had, but with perseverance and striving to be the very best, he has built it up into the awardwinning establishment it is today. They are an AA Rosette Restaurant and hold a Silver award from the Scottish Tourist Board “Eat Scotland” scheme, to name just a couple. Winning “Best in Scotland” at the British Curry Awards last year was well-deserved recognition of all their hard work. I order a Chef's Mixed Platter of pakoras and samosas. It arrives perfectly presented with salad, sauce and some natural yoghurt in case I find any of
44 konect
the dishes too spicy. The batter is beautifully crispy, with none of the residual oil that unfortunately you find on your plate in some Indian restaurants. “That is because we change the oil in our fryers very frequently,”explains Robert. “Re-using the same oil too many times is a tempting cost-saving short cut that many restaurants fall for, and the result is that old oil soaks into the batter giving you that unpleasant oiliness. At the Karma, we don't do short cuts!” That is clear from the quality of the food on my plate. Robert also explains that they don't use food colouring in the batter – it took a while for people to realise, when their restaurant first opened, that the reason all their pakoras were the same colour was that it was all natural ingredients with no artificial colour added. They add just a very minimal drop of red colour to some of the pakoras to help you tell which is which on your plate. “We use the best quality ingredients from suppliers that we have been using for years because their food is excellent quality.
If you start with good quality ingredients, employ the best chefs and are extremely fussy, then you get good quality food on the customers' plates.” The Karma's food is based on the Punjab state of India, where Robert's family is from. According to Robert, Punjabi food tends to be heartier with more bread-based recipes than the predominantly ricebased food more typical of Indian restaurants in the Edinburgh area. He finds his talent for the Punjabi kitchen in the Glasgow area. The head chef they took on 12 years ago is still with them – with his team of four other chefs. They have a very low turnover of staff, who are proud to work at the Karma. The waiting staff are trained by Robert to the same standard i.e. everything has to be just right. Fingerprints on wine glasses are not tolerated; serviettes must be folded perfectly. Robert concedes that the staff probably consider him to display obsessive compulsive behaviour in matters of cutlery and glassware - but the fact is that whatever he is doing, it is working because customers keep
coming back! Most of their new customers are from word of mouth referrals from others who have tried it and loved it. “We just keep doing what we are doing and customers love it” concludes Robert. From my experience there I can agree with that. So if you want to take visiting friends, relatives or business colleagues out locally, you can head into Karma Whitburn with confidence - you won't be disappointed. But don't just take my word for it - go there yourself first and check them out. Karma 154 West Main Street, Whitburn, EH47 0QR 01501 744024. See advert on back cover.
