Welcome to the first Konect of 2015! During the cold winter months, our local cafés keep us fuelled with hot drinks, hot food and comforting home baking in a warm atmosphere to meet up with friends, colleagues or just to relax. Bathgate is “café central” in terms of the number of cafés it manages to sustain, so I’m clearly not the only one who likes them! I’ve put together a guide in this issue for you to check out the cafés in the local area and a bit further afield towards Edinburgh. As usual, we’re running the Tesco Bathgate competition, see page 33, and also a ticket competition for what promises to be a fantastic comedy night at Howden Park in Livingston, see page 32 for your chance to win. Business spotlights, music review and other regular columns are all here. If you’ve got something interesting and different going on that you’d like to share with the local community, do get in touch and we may be able to feature your story in an upcoming issue.

K onect Café Crawl
A round-up of independent local cafés
I love cafés. They’re for meeting, escaping, talking, working, reading; for a quick meal or a leisurely coffee. Owners lovingly bring a little bit of their dream to their café. For some, it’s about beautiful décor and ambience; for others it’s speciality food or an obsession with the coffee itself. Cafés are all different, so there’s one for every occasion and every mood. We embarked on a café crawl to visit as many as possible in the areas our magazines cover. Use this guide to discover one that you didn’t know about, either close home or a little further afield...
architectural features, including the feature window facing towards Glasgow Road, and a mezzanine level above the bar. Quality food, free wifi, good atmosphere. In the evenings it transforms into a bar with regular live music. Their approach was summed up for me by the owner when they opened, who said, “If you feel like a glass of champagne with your stovies, why not?” 2 South Bridge Street, Bathgate, EH48 1TW. Tel 01506 633133. Open Sun - Thurs 11am to late, Fri - Sat 9.30am to late.
East Meets West, Bathgate is
run by a local family whose idea is to offer a range of Indian food along with Scottish favourites. The premises was formerly a café which had become run-down so they have re-fitted from scratch to stamp their own personality on it and have put a lot of thought into the menu. There is a comfy sofa area. Free wifi. 6 North Bridge Street, Bathgate, EH48 4PS. Open Mon - Fri 9am-5pm, Sat 10am-4pm.
Partnership Centre Café,
Coffee Cup Café, Deans
, Bathgate is bright and quirky. There are plenty of tables and the walls are lined with vintage china and tea pots, most of which have been donated by Bathgate residents. You order your food at the counter that looks like a domestic kitchen, complete with fridge covered in magnets, and you can see café owner Pinar or other staff members preparing your food fresh right there. Also sells old-fashioned sweets. 24 South Bridge Street, Bathgate, EH48 1TL. Open Mon to Sat 8.00am -16.30pm.

8 konect
Bathgate is operated by local catering company Food Creations, who have outlets all across West Lothian and run a busy events catering business. The Partnership Centre Café is conveniently located in the same building as the library and many council services, is bright and airy and serves all the usual favourite lunches and hot snacks.
Cupcake Café Bar
, Torphichen is in a country setting so there’s plenty of room for a garden with several picnic tables, which I’m sure will be great in the warmer weather. I visited on a cold January day though and enjoyed their heart-warming cream of mushroom soup - made from scratch on site – and Brodies coffee. There was plenty of friendly banter and some regular customers who are self-appointed scone experts reckon they are the best scones anywhere! And of course as the name suggest, there are cupcakes galore, which, like all the food, are made on site. Free Wifi. Westerwood Farm, Torphichen.
Cupcake Café Bar, Torphichen
Open 7 days 9am -4pm.
Hopetoun Deli, Bathgate opened
in October last year. It’s a small premises with 5 tables and is very busy behind the scenes making food for the catering and delivery service side of the business. They make as much of their food as possible on site, and offer breakfasts, sandwiches, paninis, pastas and salads (they don’t do any fried food) for sit in or takeaway. Monthly meal deals, Italian Aroma coffee and a selection of teas. 54 Hopetoun Street, Bathgate, EH48 4EU. Tel 07788 378317. Open Mon 8.00am – 3pm, Tues to Sat 8.00 – 4pm.
Café Y u m Y u m, Bathgate opens
at 6am for all the early birds who like to get their cooked breakfast on the way out to work! “I’m here at 5.30am anyway doing the baking for the day, so I may as well open up and serve breakfast!” All the usual home-baked favourites are made fresh daily – stovies, macaroni, toasties, hot-filled rolls, soups etc as well as cakes, cheesecakes and other sweet treats. Free wifi, plenty of room and a bright corner location. 1 Jarvey Street, Bathgate, EH48 4EZ. Tel: 01506 635305. Open 6am – 4pm Mon to Sat.
The Coffee Cup Cafe, Deans- run
by Deans resident Val, it is one of Livingston’s very few (only?) independent café owned by a local person, which makes it special to start with! Val wanted to create somewhere nice in Deans for people to meet up for a coffee or snack. There is a cosy corner with sofa and kids’ toys. The café is particularly popular for Val’s monthly themed-nights – she runs Chinese nights, Indian nights, Greek nights etc which are incredibly good value. 118 Carmondean Centre, Deans. EH54 8TD. Open Mon-Sat 8am-3pm and Sunday 9am-3pm.
Thistles Coffee Shop, West
Calder, is named after the landmark Thistle Tower that used to be located a few buildings down. We sampled soup of the day here – a very generous sized serving. The café was buzzing with customers and there is a kids’ corner. Huge thistle-inspired lamp pendants hang from the ceiling, there is a good atmosphere and it’s clearly a popular local café. 11 Main Street, West Calder, EH55 8BY. Tel 01506 873322. Open Mon - Fri 8.00 am - 4.00 pm & Sat 8.30 am - 4.00 pm.
Little Whispers Café is tucked away off the Main Street in West Calder within Little Whispers shop. This small café has a peaceful, sanctuary-like atmosphere. Their cakes are baked on the premises by owners Carol and Steve, who is a qualified chef. They don’t do a full lunch menu, but it’s a perfect spot for a quiet drink and quality cake. They offer a cup reading service (tea leaves or coffee grounds). 48 Main Street, West Calder, EH55 8DR. Tel 01506 253467. Open 10am – 4pm Mon to Fri and 10am – 3pm Saturday.
Almondell Café, East Calder,
within Veitch’s Garden Centre is run by professional chef Lydia who has selected the menu based on over 10 years catering experience. Breakfasts, lunches, hot snacks and home-baking – the cheesecakes seem particularly popular! It has a homely and relaxed atmosphere with a mixture of table seating and sofa/coffee table area for relaxing. The proceeds are used to fund Lydia’s charity work in Zimbabwe. Within Veitch’s Garden Centre, East Calder, EH53 0ET. Tel: 07955 382042. (The café has been closed during January but re-opens on 26th Jan). Open 7 days 10am - 4.30pm.

The Corner Café
, Currie, is spacious and charmingly furnished with mis-matched wooden tables and chairs painted in creams/pastels or bare wood, giving it a relaxed farmhouse feel. When I visited for a pre-Christmas catch-up with a friend, there was a buzz and good atmosphere. There is a large gluten-f ree section on the menu. The café is table service and the food and coffee we had that day was great. 20 Lanark Road West, Currie, EH14 5NY. Tel 0131 449 3153. Open Mon to Fri 8.30am – 5pm, Sat 10am – 5pm, Sun 10am – 4pm.
Riccarton Garden Centre Coffee Shop, Currie offers a very
extensive menu with loads of filling choices for baps, paninis, baguettes, tortillas, jacket potatoes, not to mention salads, soups and specials dishes. The café is spacious but is subdivided into sections, giving each area a cosier feel, including a raised area with a few tables and children’s play area, and a conservatory. Riccarton Garden Centre, Riccarton Mains Road, Currie, EH14 5AA. Open Mon to Sat 9am-5pm, Sunday 10am-5pm. Tel 0131 449 4004.
Molly’s, Juniper Green, celebrated
its first birthday last month, and while you may know Molly’s for their coffee and cakes (owner Sarah runs cake and sugar craft classes) they now offer light lunches too - soups, filled rolls etc. Everything is made on site – the day I was there the scones had sold out by 11am, so I had one from the second fresh batch of the day! (according to one of Sarah’s other customers they are the “best scones in Edinburgh...”). Free wifi. 563 Lanark Road, Juniper Green, EH14 5DB. Tel 0131 610 0665. Open 9am-4pm Mon - Thurs and Sat; Fridays 9.30-4pm.
partitioned off the end of the room and turned it into a really cosy little café/restaurant, serving excellent Italian coffees (probably my favourite coffee is here of all the ones I’ve tried – smooth and sweet enough to take with no sugar) and amazing home baking during the day. They have a deli counter and on Friday and Saturday they serve real foodie food in the evenings. 36 Main Street, Balerno, EH14 7EH. Tel 07790 377648. Open Mon to Fri 9am -5pm, Sat 9am-3pm, Sun 10am-2.30pm. The Bistro is open for meals Fri & Sat 6pm – 10pm.
Merlot & Mocha, Currie is the
new one on the block, opened just before Christmas. Owned by a local businessman, it has been refurbished and is light and spacious. The furniture gives it a pub-like appearance at first glance but there are touches that are definitely more café-like – an interesting mixture and the explanation is in the name! The food we tried was good (paninis, soup with warm bread, creamy mushrooms) and the table service also good. They do tapas on a Tuesday evening. Looking forward to finding out more as they get established. Free wifi. 4-5 Pentland View Court, Currie, EH14 5NP. Tel: 0131 4492828. Open Mon – Fri from 8.30 - late, Sat/Sun 10am - late.
Woods Deli, Juniper Green, are
very proud of their food, and judging by the excellent salted caramel brownie I sampled here, justifiably so! (They sell 40 trays of this brownie every week, so I’m not the only one who thinks it’s pretty good!). The coffee has been carefully selected from Italy and all cooking and baking is done on site. On Thurs, Fri and Sat evenings it is Woods Bistro serving high quality meals (“I like to think we set the standard for gastro food in this area.”). Open Mon to Sat 9am – 5pm, Sunday 10am – 5pm. (Bistro open Thus to Sat 6pm-midnight).

SPOTLIGHT ON
Albyn Veterinary Centre A version of laser treatment therapy used by sports teams and athletes is now available for pets. Albyn Veterinary Practice in Broxburn is one of a very few practices in Scotland (and the only one in West Lothian) to have invested in a laser machine to offer this treatment. The benefits of laser light therapy are subject to much research due to its potential for promoting healing and pain reduction, and this is making its way into veterinary medicine as well as human medicine. So, keen to offer a range of treatment options to their customers, Albyn Vets acquired a laser treatment machine in November. They have been treating a wide range of injuries and ailments with it and so far the feedback has been very positive. “Every case is different so it’s impossible to say exactly whether the laser treatment could completely replace an existing treatment plan” explains practice-owner Kathryn. “But it can help with a wide range of conditions including reducing swelling, reducing pain and speeding the healing process.” For example, a treatment along the incision immediately after surgery can significantly reduce healing time. Acute conditions such as skin wounds, bites, allergies, dermatitis, burns and
sprains and fractures will benefit both in terms of healing and pain relief; and chronic conditions such as periodontal disease, degenerative joint disease or arthritis can be treated to help with pain management. Older pets who have aches and pains or decreased mobility can benefit from a course of laser therapy. In fact any pet in pain or discomfort is a candidate, and the vets at Albyn Vets will be delighted to advise and recommend the best treatment for your pet’s condition. One of the first candidates was Kathryn’s own dog who had laser treatment for a toe injury and responded very well. Unlike conventional drugs, laser light treatment is free from any side-effects – your pet just feels a gentle warmth over the area treated (they can’t tell us, of course, but that is what human patients describe!) and it takes just a few minutes. It can be applied without touching the painful area so is ideal for very sensitive tissues. The light energy delivered by the laser interacts with the cells, increasing blood flow and promoting healing. If you are interested in trying this new treatment, please contact Albyn Vets on 01506 852498 for more information. They are offering £5 off an initial treatment for readers with the advert opposite.
SURGERY HOURS Monday to Friday 9:00am to 12:00pm and 2:00pm to 6:30pm Saturday: 9:00am to 1:00pm
NEW LASER THERAPY TREATMENT NOW AVAILABLE: A new non-invasive, drug-free treatment to reduce pain, reduce inflammation and speed healing. Suitable for a wide range of conditions or injuries. Used to enhance or replace other treatment plans.

SPOTLIGHT ON
Edinburgh Wood Fuel Nothing beats a crackling fire in the hearth for comfort on a cold day. The rituals of collecting winter fuel, stacking the woodpile, laying a fire and taking out the ashes are making a comeback a generation since open fires were largely replaced by gas, oil or electric central heating. As the need for sustainable heat production becomes increasingly topical, wood-burning stoves – carefully engineered high tec versions of the open fire - are becoming increasingly popular as a real flame fire is not only beautiful but is a sustainable form of heating. Edinburgh Wood Fuel (EWF) is a small local familyrun business based in Baberton which has been supplying wood fuel in a variety of forms since 2006. EWF now has over 550 customers and the business has gone from strength to strength over the last 18 months or so. They take care of the “collecting winter
fuel” part of the ritual (and will even stack it for you if you like!). The company supplies and delivers a variety of quality products including firewood, kindling, briquettes, charcoal and wood pellets, and is well set to deal with increasing demand for wood fuel. Not all wood is the same, as EWF owner Chris Edmunds points out, and it’s important to assess the moisture content, density and potential contamination of wood to be burnt. EWF supply only carefully sourced fuel that will burn with maximum efficiency. The wood is sustainably sourced from the UK (and locally where possible) and is seasoned for at least 18 months, meaning customers receive wood ready to burn. Hardwood species supplied include ash, beech, sycamore, oak and cherry. Softwood species include larch and Scots pine. Chris comments, “There are many people out there supplying firewood but EWF prides itself on a professional and prompt service. Customers are contacted by the delivery team to arrange a mutually convenient time for delivery. It is evident that customers enjoy this personal service as EWF receives orders from many customers on a regular basis.” Chris started his first business aged 13 and has always has a keen interest in enterprise. He studied Rural Enterprise and Land Management, and graduated with a First Class Honours degree in 2011. As part of his degree, Chris undertook a dissertation on the feasibility of installing a biomass district heating scheme, and has developed a specialist interest in biomass schemes. As a result EWF now offers consultancy on biomass installations, in particular district heating schemes. As they state on their website, “Our core value is to provide top quality products to our customers in a friendly and efficient manner” so they will be very happy to

PROPERTY MATTERS
by Craig Turpie
“Waiting in Hope?” If your rental property is currently on the market awaiting a tenant, it may be tempting to assume that your agent is in full control of the situation, and that sooner or later a tenant will materialise. But don’t be so sure! Sometimes an agent will take the same view and simply sit in hope, having apparently exhausted their own marketing options. However, we believe in a much more proactive approach and would invite anyone who is currently “waiting in hope” to contact us for a free and confidential review meeting. Our aim during these meetings is not to criticise your chosen agent, but simply to help you consider some key facts about the progress of your let from day one and offer constructive advice where we feel there are things you could do to make a difference. For example, we would review the following in context: 1.
The advertising response to date
2.
Feedback from prospective tenants
3.
The number of viewings of your property in relation to local averages
4.
The “drawing” ability of existing marketing efforts
5.
The presentation of your property in context
6.
The availability of other homes that compete with yours
7.
Your plans for your property investment
8.
How your property is positioned in the lettings market
9.
You void period in relation to industry (and our own) benchmarks
Sometimes it pays to have another pair of eyes to take a constructive and enthusiastic look at your situation. Any advice we give would be free and without obligation. Why not call us on 01506 668448 to arrange a meeting?

TECHNOLOGY
Something in the air Our sense of smell is the most powerful of all our senses - we’re quick to notice if something doesn’t smell good. Damp, pets and perfumes can all create unwanted odours in our homes, but the good news is that there are lots of devices that can clear the air.
If you’ve seen advertising breaks recently you’ve probably seen ads for devices such as the Air Wick Freshmatic, which regularly release puffs of fragrance to make your room smell nicer. You can pick up Freshmatic bases - the bits that do the puffing - for around £6 for two, and refills are around £6 to £12 for a pack of four.
Damp is one of the most distinctive unwanted odours, and it can be serious: damp can cause respiratory problems, especially in young children and the elderly. It’s usually caused by inadequate ventilation, over-enthusiastic showering or drying clothes indoors, especially in winter, and you can banish it with a dehumidifier. A dehumidifier sucks moisture out of the air and puts it in a tank, and some models can be installed permanently with a drain tube to take the water outside. Don’t waste your time with little gel-pack dehumidifiers: electric ones can cost as little as £50, although for a typical home you’d be better off with one of the very many models costing around £100. Those ones are capable of handling 10 litres of water before it’s time to empty them; smaller, cheaper ones need emptied much more frequently. If the unwanted odours are from dust, smoke or other small particles, an air purifier such as the Vax HEPA 2 Air Dehumidifier (not branded) Purifier (around £150) can help. The HEPA bit is important: it’s short for high-efficiency particulate air, and it’s an international standard for air cleaning gadgets. If it isn’t HEPA it might not be very good. You’ll also find HEPA-accredited vacuum cleaners from the likes of Vax and Dyson, which are particularly good for houses with pets.
30 konect
The problem with air fresheners, of course, is that they mask odours rather than get rid of them. If you’re dealing with stubborn odours, such as the ones left on furniture by wet dogs or from food smeared on the sofa by small children, a dedicated cleaning gadget might help. Air Wick Freshmatic Base
Vax’s Rapide (around £129) and Bissell’s Cleanview use jets of water and detergent to clean carpet and upholstery and then suck the liquid back in again. The results can be good - provided, that is, that the fabric’s colour doesn’t run. Always try a small area first, and look for anti-allergen detergents. However a professional carpet and upholstery cleaning service will usually give you a much better and more thorough result. Vax HEPA vacuum cleaner

INTERVIEW
A founder of the New Town Roller Girls
Victoria Tickle speaks to one of the founders of an exciting new sports team in West Lothian... New Town Roller Girls are Livingston’s only female flat-track roller derby league. They are three years old and are making their bouting debuts this year in the BritishChampionships. Flat track roller derby is a fast-paced, full contact team sport that requires speed, strategy, and athleticism. Could you introduce yourself? My name is Hazzard! Or, if you want to get official, Hazel. Derby girls have special connections with their alter egos, what’s yours? My derby name came from my work where I do some of our health and safety bits and bobs and I’m known to be a bit clumsy. The name developed from there and then from there it came in to derby! How did you get involved with the sport? I watched Whip It! At the time I started looking up other leagues in Scotland but many of them where too far away from me or had big waiting lists for new skaters. So me and a couple others started our own team in Livingston. Can you describe your personal journey with Derby? After we’d decided to start up our own league the next step was skates. As I had no idea what we were doing I bought these (in hindsight) really awful skates. Thankfully, once we’d got all our kit we managed to get ourselves a
training venue at Craigswood. Back in those days we only practiced every second Sunday which now I find hard to think that I had to go without skating for so long! It took us a while to get ourselves established properly but with help from local leagues we started to grow both our skills and our numbers. The past year I feel has been our best year. I’ve got to see so many enthusiastic girls come in to the NTRG fold and I look forward to playing alongside them this year! Why is Livingston such a great place to be? Livingston has so much potential for the growth of roller derby within it. The only thing it is lacking so far is a venue for us to host games. Unlike the bigger cities in Scotland, Livingston just doesn’t have a big sports complex to host many sports’ games. Livingston and the surrounding areas would benefit extremely well from one! For us, we’ve found a wealth of talented and determined ladies that have brought so much to the league already and we hope we find more! Who can play derby & who are NTRG looking for? Anyone can play! Although we may be a women’s league there are men’s leagues around Scotland. There’s also one junior league too! Even though we might only take women as players at the moment, men that are interested in joining can be referees or NSO’s (non-skating officials) as well. That also applies to women who maybe don’t want to do the contact or cannot skate for some reason. We would love to have as many people involved in our wonderful sport as we can and we have the platform to do that at NTRG!

Music Review
Richman is “Roadrunner”, with it’s prominent chant of “turn your radio on”. There are a long list of culprits. “On The Radio” by Donna Summer, the wonderfully subversive “Radio Radio” by Elvis Costello (“I want to bite the hand that feeds me”), “I love My Radio” by Taffy, and more recently “Radio” by Beyoncé, or “That’s Why God Made The Radio” by The Beach Boys.
by James Kerr
In 1983 Tom Robinson followed up his summer number 6 chart smash “War Baby” with “Atmospherics (Listen To The Radio). Co-written with Peter Gabriel and featuring a beautiful trumpet part mixed in with subtle melodies and memorable lyrics, including, of course, the repeated chant “Listen to the radio”, the song stalled at number 39, meaning that, just as on the Regal Music Club radio show I’m presenting on Regal Radio, I’m talking nonsense.
The Regal Music Club Internet radio stations are still a growing phenomenon, and the Regal Theatre is getting involved with the launch of Regal Radio, a community radio station from a community theatre, available now on www.regalradio.net. Currently the stream is a mix of automated playlists and local presenters but the aim is to get as many live shows on the air as possible, so if you think you could put together a show and fancy a shot at presenting then get in touch via the website. One sure fire way to get a hit, aside from a catchy tune, is to include a reference to radio or the DJ in the lyric. It cannot be co-incidence that in a forty year career the only chart action seen by Jonathan

Reduce your stress levels with a properly planned new kitchen by Ekco How was it…you know, the last big meal that you cooked for guests? Was it a resounding success or did the dog even refuse to touch the leftover roast? There are steps you can take to prevent a recurring disaster and reduce stress levels next time around. Number one on the list has to be a new or revamped kitchen. Unless you’re the miracle chef, Rachel Khoo who can cook a three course meal on a two-ringed camping stove in her tiny Parisian flat you’ll need a touch more space to lay out your resting roast and accompanying veg. Then there’s the appliances to think of, so before you go rushing off all excited and ordering yourself a new kitchen here are some things you should consider:
•
•
•
Is your new kitchen for effect only or will it be well used for developing your culinary skills? There’s the story about the man who hid his wife’s birthday presents in the oven because it was the only place she wouldn’t look! If your kitchen is for effect only you can put what you like in it but if it’s to be a place of creativity and industry then only buy what you need and have it designed around the person who uses it most If you happen to be the Head Chef as well as KP in your home then stand in your existing kitchen with your eyes closed and imagine one or two typical meals you enjoy cooking. Where do you keep your key ingredients and can you lay your hands on them without thinking? Where is your hob in relation to your oven? What workspace do you have for food prep and for serving up? It’s important that you relay these thoughts to your kitchen designer and planner as a good one will really help you to make the most of the footprint you have to play with What was the last small appliance you bought? Was it a cupcake maker
36 konect
•
which is now gathering dust on top of one of your wall cupboards? Every appliance you buy should have a regular purpose based on the type of food you love to cook. As a starter for ten, a good quality food processor is a must for every budding chef Do you have adequate refrigeration and freezing space? How good is your oven and will you be able to give it a few trial runs before any big event to make sure it can cope? Reducing stress levels when making any big dinner depends on pre-planning, plenty of space to store your chilled foods (and part-cooked foods such as potatoes before roasting), good quality appliances from trusted brands, and enough workspace to adequately prepare and serve.
Once you have everything else in place making the actual meal itself is pretty straightforward. For advice on planning a new kitchen why not contact EKCO, Edinburgh’s premier kitchen company?

RECIPE AND FOOD NOTES
by Anne Pinkerton
Soups - Scottish Winter Staple In Scotland we have a grand tradition of soup making. Think of Partan Brae, Cock a Leekie , Cullen Skink and Scotch Broth. All are made from local ingredients and are nearly a meal in themselves. At this time of year it is good to eat comforting food. Combine the two ideas and you have traditional way of feeding the family. One of the best loved soups is leek and potato, made from… leeks and potatoes, onion, salt, pepper, milk and water. Soup need not be dull and if you use your imagination you can almost always make a great meal from what is in the fridge. The method is usually the same as in these two following recipes and it only takes about half an hour.
Fridge soup 1 onion; chopped 2 carrots; grated 1 medium potato; grated 1 leek; sliced in very fine circles 100g red lentils or a drained tin of beans. Not baked-beans, but any other sort you enjoy. If you have any left-over cooked meat or other veg, eg peas, cabbage, pepper cut them finely and use. Rice or pasta can be added. Grated cheese for a topping is good. Start by frying the onion in a little butter half and half with oil. Add the carrot, potato and leek. Cook gently for 5 minutes to soften. If you have them add the lentils and mix everything well. Add 1 pint water or stock. Cover the pan and cook slowly for 15 minutes. Check that the lentils are cooked and see if the soup is too thick. Add more water if needed. At this point add the extra “finds” from the fridge. Cook at a gentle boil till all the soup is really hot. About 5 minutes more. Season with salt, pepper, a dash of Tabasco or a teaspoonful of Marmite.

Jamie’s Super Soup From an Australian friend, this soup in made interesting by the addition of creamed coconut and a little chili and fresh ginger. A collection of any vegetables you like, but it should include onion, garlic and a large aubergine. Courgette, neep, tomato, pepper, parsnip or carrot can be included. Small can coconut milk or milk made with 1/3 of a packet creamed coconut and ½ pint water. 2 inch root ginger peeled and crushed. 4-6 cloves garlic, crushed. Cumin, cloves chilli flakes Fresh coriander Fry the chopped onion in olive oil till golden. Add the diced aubergine and a little more oil and fry till collapsing. Add all the other veg you chose and cook till tender. Add the ginger, coconut milk garlic and seasoning. Heat through. Add 1 pint water and cook together for 10 minutes more. Use a wand blender or liquidizer to blitz the soup to a smooth texture. Taste, and correct seasoning. Perhaps add a little soya sauce. Bring back to the boil. Serve garnished with a little plain yogurt and chopped coriander. Lots of bread and a salad will make this a meal give it a go.

LOCAL LIFE
Bathgate Concert Orchestra “Let it go” from Frozen, The Skater’s Waltz and a Rodgers and Hammerstein selection are some of the pieces that will be included in a concert given by Bathgate Concert Orchestra on Friday 13th February at 7.30pm in Broxburn Parish Church. An ABBA selection, popular classics Largo from the New World Symphony and Mussorgsky’s Great Gate of Kiev will also be included, and will be part of the programme on Friday 27th March in St Peter’s Church, Livingston at 7.30pm. The Bathgate Concert Orchestra included some of these pieces at their Christmas concert in Bathgate in December, where their guest players were Pinky’s Music Club. Some members of primary school age performed in Haydn’s Toy Symphony of Haydn. There are not many children who are in a position to say that they’ve played a Symphony! It was greatly enjoyed. The Orchestra’s annual concert will be in the Regal Cinema, Bathgate, on Friday 12th June at 7.30pm with music from Johann Strauss, Gilbert and Sullivan, and a performance of Carnival of the Animals for two pianos and orchestra. This music depicts the characters of some animals and presents differing moods and is a very suitable piece with which to introduce children to an orchestra. This friendly orchestra welcomes new players and has a small number of instruments available for loan for those who have not played since their school days and would like to join us. Sandy Kilpatrick of Maxim tools says, “We have supported Bathgate Concert Orchestra for 12 years because we believe it is important to maintain the local tradition of playing musical instruments which provides so much pleasure to many people.
Upcoming Concerts 13th February 2015, 7.30pm Broxburn Parish Church 27th March 2015, 7.30pm St Peter’s Church Livingston 12th June 2015, 730pm Regal Theatre, Bathgate All concert tickets available at the door: £8 adults, £6 concessions, children under 16 free They meet on Fridays in St Johns Parish Church, Mid Street, Bathgate. Visit our web page, http://www. bathgateconcertorchestra.org.uk/, see us on Facebook, or phone 0131 331 3187 for the secretary, Joan Proven.
These pleasures are missed after they are gone so we hope local business will support the orchestra as part of their social responsibility programme.”
