FEATURE
A Victorian Vision – the Almond Valley Viaduct By Yvonne MacMillan
Star of paintings, photographs, West Lothian Council’s logo and a striking feature in the landscape for 170 years, Almond Valley Viaduct strides majestically across the river valley and flood plain. The viaduct took 3 years to build (1839 – 1842) and formed part of the new Edinburgh to Glasgow railway line. Still in use today, Scotrail’s Sprinter trains flash across it in seconds. Rail travel in the early to mid-19th century was in its infancy with each new line being promoted by a private company. In 1837, the newly-formed Edinburgh and Glasgow Railway Company put together plans to connect Edinburgh and Glasgow by rail. The new company appointed John Miller as engineer. Miller’s route design kept the railway as level as possible over as much of the route as he could. Early steam locomotives struggled with gradients, and viaducts and tunnels helped avoid this. The planned maximum gradient was 1 in 880 making the Edinburgh and Glasgow Railway the most level main line in the UK. The project was given the green light on 4th July 1838. The route began at a new eastern terminus in Edinburgh – Haymarket - (Edinburgh General
Station, later renamed Waverley, didn’t open till 1846), continued over the Almond Valley Viaduct, through the Winchburgh Tunnel, via Linlithgow to Falkirk, and on to its terminus at Glasgow’s Queen Street. The 45-mile route was divided into slices. Advertisements appeared in the newspapers for contractors to tender for different sections of the work. The advertisement for the largest slice, including the heaviest engineering work on the line - the Almond Valley Contract – said, “Contract No 1: Being that part of the line extending from near Norton Farm House in the Parish of Ratho to near West Inch in the Parish of Abercorn, and in length 9000 yards or thereby. This contract will include a great extent of cutting and embankment, two viaducts the one across the Almond Water Valley 682 yards long and about 70 feet high and the other across the Edinburgh and Glasgow road 108 yards long and about the same height, a tunnel thro’ Winchburgh Ridge 350 yards long, laying the rails and otherwise completing the lot”. Each contract stated “Contractors shall be completely finished on or before the 1st day of July 1841 with a penalty of £20 per day for every day it shall remain unfinished after that date”. Leading bridge builder, John Gibb & Son of Aberdeen, won the Almond Valley Contract with a quote of £147, 669 and set to work on their Herculean task in February 1839. (The company made a loss of £40,000).
The closure this summer of the Winchburgh Tunnel and resulting disruption for rail users highlights our ongoing dependence on this original engineering feat. The Winchburgh Tunnel takes the railway line beneath Main Street of Winchburgh. It extends 335m (1100 feet) in length and opened with the rest of the railway 1842. The tunnel was designed by railway engineer John Miller (1805-83) and built by civil engineer John Gibb (1776 - 1850). It took 24 months to complete and cuts through a ridge of oil-shale and dolerite; the friable nature of the shale required it to be lined in-part with brick. Design decisions resulted in the tunnel being prone to flooding. It was closed this July to allow the track to be lowered as part of the work necessary to electrify the line.
The Almond Valley Viaduct is a Category A listed structure. At 1.5 miles, it’s the longest structure on the Edinburgh and Glasgow Railway and is in two sections, separated by a high embankment 400 metres long. The eastern section is made up of 36 ashlar-faced (prepared stonework, dressed or cut) segmental masonry arches, each with a 15.2m span, and up to 21.3m high. The western section has 7 arches, the central and largest arch bridges the A89. It has a span of 20.1m, with 3 arches of 15.2m span on either side. Strengthening work was carried out in the 1950s and 1988.
Aerial view of the viaduct
Over the next 3 years, the entire route echoed to an army of men, thunderous explosions and constant clanging of picks and shovels. In the nick of time before the Railway Company’s deadline, the River Avon Viaduct’s last arch completed, the contractor treated his 160 workmen to a splendid dinner in Linlithgow Town Hall. Down the line, the Polmont section of track finished too, and celebrations ended with “a merry dance on the green to the strains of bagpipes”. But the Railway Director’s hopes of a July 1841 completion hit the buffers as other sections of line went unfinished. Penalty clause now kicking in, the Railway Directors complained to the Almond Valley Viaduct contractor that works were falling behind schedule. In reply, a letter from John Gibb & Son’s Broxburn office said, “At present we have 350 workmen and 25 horses employed on the different cuttings and tunnel on the line – 80 masons, 100 labourers, 18 joiners, 8 blacksmiths and 20 horses employed on the viaducts and bridges besides nearly 150 men with a corresponding number of horses employed in quarrying stone for the viaducts and bridges. This force you will see is not small and will be rapidly increased in the course of a very short time”. The Directors urged the contractor to work at night, by “torchlight”. The contractor’s claim for more money for overcoming unforeseen obstructions,
unfavourable weather and doing night work cut no ice. On the workmen toiled through December and the New Year’s Day edition of the Scotsman, 1842, reports the viaduct’s arches finished, though the banks still incomplete, with hundreds of workmen working furiously. With huge sighs of relief all round, and the last sweat-lashed shovel flung aside, 18th February 1842 marked the opening ceremony of the Edinburgh to Glasgow Railway. At 1pm a steam locomotive pulling 52 carriages loaded with invited guests arrived at Haymarket from Glasgow, then this train, and another 52-carriage steam locomotive, laden with the Edinburgh contingent – more excited shareholders and invited guests – 1100 people in all – set off triumphantly for Queen Street and a grand banquet. Schools had a holiday and along the line, people waved and cheered this big, loud, newfangled kid on the block. A Railway Guide of 1842, like a VisitScotland ad, describes the bold curve of the Almond Valley Viaduct, its elegant form and stupendous series of arches, calling it one of the most astonishing achievements of modern skill and enterprise. And how a panorama across the Almond Valley, as enchanting as it is extensive, charms the eye. Information from the Scotsman Archives and the National Library of Scotland. The soccer talent scout
For Broxburn resident Darren McDougall, much of life outside work centres around football in one way or another. An on-off coach for Broxburn Colts over many years, and now a talent scout for Hibs, he’s passionate not just about football but about opportunities for youngsters to get out and do something active. When we meet he starts off by offering me this gem: “We’re all so keen – and youngsters particularly – to upgrade our phones and computers regularly. But we should ‘upgrade ourselves’ first. Go out and learn a new skill or do something different; that’s upgrading yourself, and it’s more important than upgrading your phone.” Born in East London, Darren moved to Broxburn at the age of 8 and has been here ever since. “I love the fact that Broxburn is a tight-knit community and I have a great network here,” he says. Throughout high school he played for Hibs, Hearts and then Tottenham Hotspurs, but due to personal circumstances had to give up professional football at the age of 16. He’s turned his attention though to helping others in the sport, and is currently a talent scout for Hibs. “I go to matches all around West Lothian and Edinburgh on Saturday mornings and look out for kids with talent and potential,” he explains. Any he notices are given the opportunity to join the club’s training academy. Darren’s success rate as a scout is based on how many 12
of them go on to get signed by the club. His remit covers all youth and senior games and although the remit is for anyone with talent, the reality is that it’s very unusual for a girl to make it through the selection process, even if she is the best on the pitch – a sad fact that Darren feels has to change. He would like to see a lot more support for girls to play football. Darren is a great believer in the value of dance for enhancing football technique. “The balance and co-ordination skills that dance gives you – pretty much any dance – are invaluable on the pitch,” he explans. Likewise he encourages boxing to help with kids’ fitness and discipline. Darren wants to encourage kids to get out and do different things. “Trying new things improves your confidence – an essential life skill. There are plenty of facilities locally such as dance classes, and the Broxburn Athletics Colts complex on Greendykes Road is fantastic. With the great support of many volunteers there, over 500 boys and girls attend regularly.” And he practices what he preaches - he recently took up hip hop k classes as a new experience for himself. Why a Sunroom is the new Man-C ave or She-Shed by ecko
What most of us already believed has now most definitely been confirmed Britain is full of eccentrics. Channel 4’s Amazing Spaces, Shed of the Year programme has treated us to a budding pirate with a Caribbean hideaway at the bottom of his garden that is not so much Captain Kidd than Captain Big Kid. Then there’s the closet train driver - I say closet because his shed on train tracks is just about big enough to hang a steam engine driver’s overalls in and no more. However, throughout this wonderfully entertaining series the common message was clear - we all need a space to call our own; a place we can escape to for some reflective time and relaxation. While a shed may be a great option for a hideaway it does have its limitations not least in terms of size. However, for those looking for an additional room which offers versatility we’ve found the perfect solution - cue the sunroom. So what exactly is a sunroom and why should I choose one rather than say, a conservatory? Here are the main reasons from EKCO why a sunroom is the perfect alternative. The first difference is in the structure itself. A conservatory tends to be made mostly from glass
including the roof. This can cause issues with over-heating in the summer and a lack of warmth in the colder months. A sunroom on the other hand is more of a traditional room structure with solid walls and a solid roof. There is also the option to have one, two or even three walls replaced with traditional sliding doors or even bi-fold doors which are fully extendable. The roof will always be of a solid structure however, although it can be enhanced even further by adding a cupola. A conservatory is generally used either as a dining room or lounge but a sunroom is much more adaptable depending on what you need the extra space for. Yes it can be a man-cave or a she-shed if that’s what you want but it can also be a brand new dining kitchen, bedroom or even a gym. For that added touch of luxury a sunroom can even be used to house a pool, hot tub or sauna – branches and snow not included! Finally how many of us would love to work from home thus avoiding the dreaded commute but need a completely separate space away from domestic life? A sunroom is the perfect solution. You can have the best of both worlds and if you usually enjoy a Friday drink in a bar near the office you can do what many people on Shed of the Year have done by converting your shed into a pub. Although you may then see rather more of the neighbours than you’d bargained for.

WALK
By Karen Murray
I like to find destinations for walking with the general proviso that they are not too far from home and may even be incorporated into whatever else I am doing in my day. As part of my job I am very often heading along the A89 past Dechmont and I always notice the old Bangour Village Hospital and see several cars parked in the small car park in front of the entrance. After several drive-bys I came to the conclusion that it must be a dog walker’s destination.
So one day when passing with some time to spare I thought I’d check it out. I parked my car with the others and headed past the entrance gateway expecting some sort of security personnel to come and stop me at any moment. No-one did although I did feel a little under dressed without a pooch in tow. It transpires that unless you believe the place is haunted, which many do, it is the perfect place for a mid afternoon stroll, albeit a bit of an alternative stroll. Built as the Edinburgh district asylum and opened in 1906, today it is a little like walking through a ghost town as it was designed on the colony system, creating a wholly self contained village with its own farm, bakery, workshops, recreational hall, church, water supply, drainage and even its own railway. There is something a bit eerie about walking through a completely abandoned and deserted village. This design idea was taken from the Alt Scherbitz Asylum in Germany, the premise being the patients would be living in a community not just a hospital – fitting then that when it closed it was because of the concept of care in the community being the best way to care for psychiatric patients. The hospital was requisitioned by the government War Office during both wars when it became The Edinburgh War Hospital and The Scottish Emergency Medical Hospital, reverting back to a psychiatric hospital between and after the wars. It was also the local maternity hospital for a while – maybe some of you were born there? The site extends to some 220 acres and many of the buildings are listed. The ‘villas’ were set within landscaped grounds, and built in a 17th century Scottish Renaissance style, so they are really rather attractive to look at. It is tempting to peek inside them but they are of course boarded up now – too many vandals having attacked them in the past. As you wander this ghost town and its grounds you will come across the Edwardian Baroque hall

and the urge is to stop for refreshment. If you go left there is a long walk round several wards or villas and to the right it is similar walk but in a circuit, bringing you back to the start.
The site has only been completely abandoned since 2004 and since then it has been identified by successive local plans as a redevelopment opportunity largely focussed on the residential conversion of the existing buildings. I guess that is what will eventually happen and perhaps it is only right and proper but part of me thinks what a shame to lose this interesting and historic unusual walking location.
Then of course there are the green areas and all the paths and winding lanes; so many that you could never hope to fully explore the place. It is really quite magical with the overgrown bowling green now sprouting a myriad wild flowers and lampposts covered in moss, the original road lost to the greenery. What’s more, despite being set just off a busy main road and pretty close to the M8, when you are in the middle of this strange place, it is eerily silent.
A year after it closed, it was the main filming location for ‘The Jacket’ starring Keira Knightley and Adrien Brody and produced by George Clooney. Shame I missed him! However there have been no more films, just a location for police riot training. You can walk around the old hospital in any direction and wander at will but there is a real feeling that you should follow the village route – you enter the site and walk a path with houses either side. Straight ahead is what was the shop and café KONECT
Perhaps I have been slow to realise that Bangour had all this walking potential, but I am happy to have found somewhere that encompasses several things – a place to stop and walk when I am and about for work; a really intriguing site with history and architecture and of course somewhere with a choice of walking routes all there for the exploring. Who said you needed a dog to go for a brisk and energising walk? 25

Have you got your business insured? When you leave your house, you lock your front door to protect your personal belongings inside. But, are you protecting your company’s assets in the same way? Insuring company equipment and protecting tangible company assets is an important part of ensuring the longevity and success of your business. Tangible company assets can include cash, stock, raw materials, land, buildings, computers and furniture.
• M ake sure that you are covered for everything you need including eventualities like theft, fire, floods. • Update your insurance policy when you buy equipment • Premises insurance only covers the building, not the contents • Choose insurance that covers the replacement cost of the equipment rather than actual cash value. It may be more expensive, but will ensure that you can claim for the cost of your assets in the event of destruction • Ask your insurance company for a business equipment insurance consultation to make sure you are covered for every scenario • Contents will be insured against theft providing there has been forcible entry to the building. If your building is damaged as a result of the theft this will usually be covered too • You may need a separate policy to insure against theft by an employee
Insuring your company equipment You can insure assets of any size or worth, from mobile phones to laptops to heavy duty construction machinery. If any of your equipment or property is damaged or destroyed, you must not factor in the cost of replacing the items and the business income you will lose as a result of the equipment not being available.

Recipes from Hopetoun Farm Shop
Lady hopetoun’s Great Aunt Joan’s Ice Cream
Every summer we spent a week or two in Sandwich, Kent with my father’s twice widowed aunt. Aunt Joan was an incredible caterer and had people to stay throughout the summer, her beach picnics were legendary, but her teas in a little Summer House at the end of her garden were incredibly special, with everything a child could possibly ask for, including ice cream. I still use this recipe regularly; it could not be easier and scoops perfectly straight from the deep freeze. Ingredients 1 lb strawberries, raspberries or blackberries 8 oz icing sugar, sifted 1/2 pint double cream, lightly whipped Method: Puree the fruit in a mixer and then push through a sieve to remove any annoying pips. Gradually stir in the icing sugar, and then finally the cream. Put the mixture into the deep freezer and serve once set.

LADY HOPETOUN’S ICE CREAM
This is a recipe that I remember well from my childhood holidays in Australia. My grandmother always had some of this in the deep freezer, but it was originally her motherin-law’s recipe so it pre-dates the Second World War. It is best cut into blocks, not scooped, and has a wonderfully old fashioned flavour. Ingredients 1 pint thick cream 1/2 tin condensed milk 1/2 pint milk 2 tbsp. golden syrup Method: Beat all the ingredients together until the mixture is thick but not whipped. Place in a shallow rectangular dish in the freezer. Once set cut into blocks to serve. Hopetoun Farm Shop, Hopetoun Woods, Newton, EH52 6QZ Tel: 01506 830716. www.hopetounfarmshop.co.uk

Stay Active in Autumn with Cycling During the autumn the weather lends itself well to cycling and with the new school term approaching why not keep the bikes out a bit longer and make the most of it before winter returns? EasyGo Electric Bikes (www. easygoebikes.com) offers electric bike hire in West Lothian which is a great alternative as they can be used with varying levels of pedal assistance. West Lothian has plenty routes for beginners. The scenery is great and cycling can be combined with a visit to the many attractions including Almond Valley Heritage Centre, Five Sisters Zoo and Scottish Owl Centre, not forgetting our three country parks. Cruising along the Union Canal tow path is ideal for those looking for a flat traffic-free option. The Union Canal meanders through West Lothian taking in historic Linlithgow – ideal for a café stop and the spectacular Avon and Almond Aqueducts. National Cycle routes 75 and 76 traverse West Lothian. Route 75 (which links Glasgow and Edinburgh) includes a lengthy cycling path from East Calder, through Livingston, Bathgate and Armadale. There are numerous points of interest and refreshment stops along Route 75 including at Almond Valley Heritage Centre, Bathgate and Livingston town centres. For the more seasoned road cyclist, there are an infinite number of route options in West Lothian incorporating a variety of terrain from long drags and shorter, steeper climbs, flatter terrain to the east of West Lothian around Kirkliston, and of course some leg testers in the “Bathgate Alps”.
