Mid Calder gala celebrates 100 years this year! Mid Calder is gearing up for the Gala season. And this year will be special, as it is the 100th Children’s Gala in the village. The first Mid Calder Children’s Gala took place in 1915. A newspaper report of 6th August 1915 says, “On Saturday last, the Pride of Midlothian L.O.A.S. Juvenile Lodge held a Gala Day. The adult section, for the first time in the history of the Lodge, abandoned their parade and sports.” The L.O.A.S. (“Loyal Order of Ancient Shepherds”) was one of the main friendly societies at that time, and the Children’s Gala appears to have grown out of the Lodge’s annual sports day. I asked Sybil Cavanagh, of the West Lothian Local History library, about the origins of the gala. She said, “It’s interesting that Mid Calder’s gala started during the First World War, when many other gala days stopped for the duration. Some gala committees took the view that it would be wrong to be spending time and money on non-essential events like galas that did nothing for the war effort. Other committees took the view that it was important to keep up morale at home, and keep life as normal as possible for children, and that it was also good for soldiers’ morale to know that their children were still able to enjoy the gala.” So Mid Calder went for the “keep up the morale” approach! Every year the Gala has a theme, and this year it is ‘Memorable Events since 1915.’ The event is run by a dedicated committee of 8 people, who need to raise about £8000 every year. Funds come mostly from three main fundraisers held during the year a Race Night held at Black Bull Inn, a Ladies Night and Sportsman’s Dinner both held at the Masonic Arms. “This year though we’re doing only one event, a special 100th Anniversary Gala Ball at the Marriott Dalmahoy,” explains committee chairman Alan Porter. “The football tournament is being renamed the Jak Trueman Football Tournament. Jak always helped out behind the scenes at the
KONECT
Mid Calder Children’s Gala gala, he was always ready to give us a hand setting things up and packing away. We’re also holding an inter-village tug o’war named the Sean Davidson Inter-village Tug o’ War. Sean was a long-standing member of the gala committee who sadly passed away in December.” The annual celebrations kick off with Fun Sunday, a day of activities including the Duck Race on the Almond, fancy dress parade, magic show, bouncy castle and a host of other activities and demonstrations. Then a week of activities leads up to the gala procession day itself, including mini marathon, basket ball shoot, inter-school football tournament, preschool teddy bears picnic. Gala day itself will be on Saturday 6th June, make sure you come and celebrate this special occasion with the rest of the village! The Committee also organises the torchlight procession in December, when the Court is picked, and Santa’s sleigh collections. “Every penny collected goes into organising events for the children. It’s all about the children of Mid Calder,” says Alan. Being on the committee is a good social club. “It’s good fun – I wouldn’t still be doing it if it wasn’t fun,” says treasurer Judith. “We’re always looking for new members to join in and help! Our AGM will be on Wednesday 2nd September at the Institute Hall at 7pm so if you are interested in joining please come along!”

With new attractions added for this year, the West Lothian Highland Games and British Pipe Band Championships is shaping up to be its biggest ever.

of room, so we’re able to put on more family fun activities. We really want as many people as possible to come along and enjoy the day.” Besides the usual attractions there will be cookery demonstrations and photography demonstrations (run by West Lothian College) and even a medieval re-enactment! Children up to the age of 16 can enrol in a treasure hunt on the day for a chance to win one of two ipads. So there really is something for everyone. The Games themselves consist of the traditional Highland heavy athletics including tossing the caber, as well as a Highland Dance competition, children’s entertainment and facepainting and the ever popular Veteran’s Hill Race – a dash up Cairnpapple Hill. A host of craft and local food stalls complete the picture.
If you’ve attended the West Lothian Highland Games in recent years (an annual fixture in West Lothian’s calendar since 1972) you would be forgiven for thinking that this remarkable event is organised by a large and well-funded committee... but Konect has been talking to the organisers in the run up to this year’s event and was amazed to discover that in fact it is all done by an extremely dedicated and enthusiastic team of about 10 local people! Added to the fact that it takes place a week apart from Bathgate’s other major event of the summer - the Bathgate Procession and John Newland Festival - it is an extraordinary achievement for a small town. “We’ve got a lot of new attractions planned for the Games this year to broaden the appeal of the event,” says Alex Linkston, Chairman of Bathgate 2015, the combined committee for the Games and the British Pipe Band Championships. “It has moved to Balbardie Park where there is plenty

The West Lothian Highland Games have for the past two years run alongside the British Pipe Band Championships, which Bathgate successfully bid to host for a total of three years. The second largest Pipe Band Championships in the world, it sees 5000 pipers and drummers descend on Bathgate. This year will be the third and final year that the Championships will be held here. Pipe bands are an integral part of Highland Games all over Scotland, and the West Lothian Games actually started out in its first year in 1972 as a pipe band competition. At the time, the pipe major of the Bathgate and Torphichen Pipe Band, Alex Samuel, was keen to set up a pipe band championship and after some discussion as to whether it should be part of the long-standing Bathgate Procession celebrations, they decided that it should be a separate event. The next year in 1973, youth athletics and some other events were added and so began the West Lothian Highland Games. “We get a lot of help on the ground on the day from a large team of volunteers. And for the committee itself, we start work for the next year the month after the event, when we start raising funds for the next year.” They need about £50,000 to run the Highland Games, and closer to £150,000 to fund the combined Games and Pipe Band Championship. Most of the funding comes from business sponsorships, and West Lothian Council are also very supportive. Ticket sales make up the rest of the funding....and with their special early bird deal of £20 for a family ticket this year, it is fantastic value for a day’s entertainment. There will be a free shuttle bus on the day taking visitors from further afield from Bathgate railway station to Balbardie Park.
Business sponsorship opportunities – sponsorship packages to suit all budgets. Please call 01506 652792 for information.
The Committee is always looking for new members to join. “It’s hard work but very satisfying,” says Alex, “You get a great sense of achievement when it all comes together on the day, it’s very rewarding.” We’re very fortunate in Bathgate to have this event, thanks to a lot of hard work on the part of the organisers and the generosity of the sponsors, many of whom are local businesses. So put 30th May in the calendar and make sure you get your early bird family ticket now! With thanks for information to: Alex Linskton, Cllr Jim Walker & Tom Tierney

Pain free dental care with the magic wand!
A lot of people are put off visiting the dentist because they need to have an injection. Because of this we have invested in the wand. The wand is a computerized anesthetic delivery system which ensures patients can be numbed up pain free, unlike normal injections. The wand also does not leave you feeling numb for hours after. We now use the wand as part of our dental care and patients tell us how much it has transformed their dental experience.

SPOTLIGHT ON
Angela Elizabeth Nursery Angela Elizabeth Nursery is the longest-running private nursery in West Lothian, opened and still owned by Marguerita Sutherland for almost 30 years. And some of the staff have been there almost since the beginning – a testament to the great working environment which, unsurprisingly, seems to translate into a great atmosphere and stable environment for the children too. The nursery is based in the original Wilkieston village school building, which was built by local tradesmen around 200 years ago. After the school closed the building was used by the social work department as a rehabilitation centre, and finally became Angela Elizabeth Nursery, opening with just 6 children and 3 members of staff in 1987. In the years since it has developed a solid reputation locally for quality pre-school care. The recently-completed building project on site was the addition of an extension allowing the nursery to take more children of all ages including babies from three months old, as well as improvements to the other rooms and outdoor areas. I visited recently to see the results and to talk to the nursery manager Carol Ann. Carol Ann has been the manager at Angela Elizabeth since 1993. “The extension has almost doubled the capacity of the nursery,” she explains, “giving us a total capacity now of 75 children.” They are well equipped in the brand new custom-built baby area to cater for babies from 3 months old. The room is large and brightly decorated with lots of equipment, and is separate from the rooms for the toddlers and older children. Thanks to the extension, there is plenty of room to divide the activities up for the different age groups and needs of the children; at the time I visited there was a 22
quiet time in one of the rooms, with the children resting with dimmed lighting, and noisier activities in a different room. There is an excellent sheltered area outside the babies’ room with a pram area that Marguerita has taken a lot of effort to ensure is completely safe and secure. There is also a secure garden play area with ccty, and space for potting plants and growing vegetables. The nursery offers a fantastic range of activities and has the luxury of space for all the essential early-years activities – baking, construction, art, glueing, sand and water. Other activities on offer include French lessons, outings and sports classes. One of the key criteria for staff is that – besides being fully qualified – they have a genuine rapport with children and are dedicated to their profession. Each different staff member brings their own skills to nurture and encourage the children to learn through a balance of free play and adult-led activities. A pick up and collection service is available from the local primary schools (Ratho, Kirknewton and East Calder), and there is space onsite for parent’s parking for pick-up and drop-off. The nursery’s location just off the A71 means it is very convenient for parents dropping off on the way to/from work.
“There is an excellent sheltered area outside the babies’ room with a pram area that Marguerita has taken a lot of effort to ensure is completely safe and secure.” With this extension successfully completed, the nursery is working on its next project – an After School Club which will be up and running soon. For more information please call Angela Elizabeth Nursery on 0131 333 1949.

EKCO’s top tips for hosting the perfect barbecue As the warmer weather begins to kick in and the nights become longer our thoughts start to turn to entertaining close friends and family. Good conversation, chilled wine and sumptuous barbecued food. So, to put you in the mood and get the juices flowing here are some top tips from EKCO to make your barbecue sizzle.
1
Charcoal or gas – First things first, what type of barbecue should you buy? Charcoal barbecues, the choice of purists, are cheaper and the charcoal permeates every inch of the food to impart that traditional chargrilled flavour. They also tend to take up less space than a gas barbecue so storage in the winter months is easier. On the downside they take a bit more practice when cooking as the heat remains pretty constant so you need make sure you keep turning your food to ensure even cooking throughout. A gas barbecue on the other hand won’t give you that authentic outdoor taste but on the plus side they can be fired up quickly and the temperature is easily controlled.
2
Your outdoor space – A well laid patio area is ideal for entertaining. Plenty of seating around a table to keep the company close together for the witty repartee is a must. When the sun goes down you want to make sure the party continues. By replacing your existing sliding patio doors for
bifold doors you can open them up fully to create one space between your home and your garden. This means that your guests can stay warm and sheltered but still enjoy the outdoors.
3
Theme – You could choose a theme for your barbecue day. How about a Mexican fiesta with sizzling fajitas, jugs of Margaritas or ice cold bottles of beer complete with the obligatory wedges of lime to keep the flies away from your drinks?
4
Food – Mention barbecue and most people will fire up the sausages and burgers. While this is fine you really want to try something different. For a Tex Mex theme you could look at succulent baby back ribs. Or how about brisket beef with a side order of salsa and black bean, corn and tomato salad? There are thousands of recipes online so you’ll never be stuck.
5
Drink – Your choice of drinks is important. There’s nothing like an ice cold beer when it’s hot. Or, a themed drink like a Margarita or Mojito but drinking in the sun can be deadly so make sure you have plenty of soft drinks and jugs of ice cold water on hand. Never encourage anyone to drink alcohol if they’ve made it clear that they’re not in the mood and there are plenty of recipes for soft cocktails available on the web. The golden rule is whatever you are serving, making sure it’s ice cold. An inflatable beer chiller is ideal but if you feel like splashing out you can always buy an electric wine cooler for your kitchen.

Showcase
25
Over a dozen residents of West Lothian will be treading the boards at the King’s Theatre, Edinburgh, this month as part of Showcase Musical Productions’ performance of “Showcase 25.” Showcase is celebrating its 25th anniversary in style! Showcase 25 will be a musical extravaganza paying tribute to Showcase past, present and future, featuring a selection of numbers from the likes of Les Miserables, Wicked, Queen, Adele and The Beatles. Cast member Susan Broadfoot, from Mid Calder, said, “I have re-joined Showcase (after a gap of many years) to take part in Showcase 25. It is a great company to be part of, raising money for Macmillan and having fun on stage too. There has always been a “big family” feel to Showcase which is unique and it’s great to have been made welcome again. It’s lovely to see quite a few of the old faces, but it’s brilliant to see so many talented and enthusiastic young people, who will ensure a long and exciting future for this wonderful company.” While everyone involved performs in Showcase because of their love of the theatre, there is a very serious side. Showcase is an important fundraiser for Macmillan Cancer Support in Scotland, having raised over £220,000 to date. Director Andy Johnston said, “Each and every one of our cast gives so freely of their talents and time all to benefit Macmillan Cancer Support – I often remind the cast that as a company, we are in a very special position that we have a hobby than can genuinely change someone else’s life – and what can be more important than that?”
With 310,000 people diagnosed with cancer in the UK every year, many of the cast and supporters of Showcase have been affected by cancer and have first-hand experience of the support Macmillan gives. Jayne Forbes, Macmillan Cancer Support Fundraising Manager, Edinburgh said, “We are extremely grateful to Showcase for their considerable support to date. They have raised an incredible amount of money which has helped us make a real difference to the lives of people affected by cancer. In Edinburgh there are 53 specialist Macmillan nurses and health care professionals, helping people living with cancer and their families receive essential medical, practical and emotional support. None of this would be possible without supporters like Showcase. 98% of our funding comes from public donations. Quite simply, we couldn’t provide our services without the support of local people.” Showcase 25 - King’s Theatre, Edinburgh, Fri 29th to Sat 30th May 2015 Evenings 7.30pm, Saturday matinee 2.30pm 0131 529 6000 or 0131 529 6005 (Group bookings) www.edtheatres.com/showcase. Tickets from £15.75
Showcase is a musical theatre company open to anyone aged 16 or over. The company has performed annually since 1990 to raise money for charity using the musical skills and talents of some of the best “non-professional” performers in Edinburgh and the surrounding area. The aim is to produce a highly entertaining and professional show incorporating a wide variety of musical styles. For more information visit www.show-case.co.uk. Marriott Dalmahoy
Local food with a story kitchen herb garden consisting of mainly hardy woody herbs but James is looking to expand it – “It depends how much space I can persuade the gardeners to let me have for my herbs!” he says. A current project is to find a local jam supplier. “The challenge is that we need it in mini jars for breakfast trays, but it’s not economical for small producers to supply in tiny pots. We’re working on a solution and will probably fill them ourselves on site. The important thing is the product itself.”
Marriott Dalmahoy Gin Afternoon Tea
“We live in God’s larder here in Scotland, we don’t need to go elsewhere for food.” So says executive Chef James Thomson of the Marriott Dalmahoy, who believes passionately in sourcing local food. Happily, Marriott central now encourage their regional hotels to source as much food as possible from their local areas. “It’s an exciting challenge to create our menus from local sources.” For James, this means firstly around Edinburgh and West Lothian, then the Central Belt, then the rest of Scotland for anything not available closer home. “I don’t go out of Scotland though; there’s no need, we have such fantastic food right here,” he enthuses. They currently use Scottish beef - from Orkney - but are in the process of sourcing beef from even closer home, from Lord Morton’s own herd grazed on the estate at Dalmahoy. “I always personally visit the farm when sourcing food. We get to speak to the farmers themselves and to see where the animals are grazing.” This is important because as he explains, due to a food labelling loophole, meat labelled as Scottish does not necessarily have to be bred here; it may have been raised elsewhere and imported, and so long as it has spent a minimal time grazing here before going to the abattoir it can be labelled as Scottish. The hotel’s Human Resources Manager, Dara, is a registered apiarist and is in the process of setting up bee hives on the estate. Once fully in production, the hotel will be using the honey (branded “Dalmahoney”) in the kitchen and on guests’ breakfast trays. They expect the first batch within the next couple of years. Also on site is a
While they are rightly proud of their the fine-dining Rosette Pentland Restaurant, the Dalmahoy caters for all occasions and have a casual restaurant, Zest, as well as their “5, 10 and 20” bar menus i.e. food that can be prepared in 5 minutes, 10 minutes or 20 minutes. Cyrenians Farm
Cyrenians Farm at Kirknewton A new veggie box scheme with a difference If you haven’t got space, time or inclination to tend a vegetable garden, the next best thing has to be getting food that has been grown within a couple of miles of your home and delivered fresh. And even better, grown on a farm that is a social enterprise, a rehabilitation community for young people (16-30) who need support, usually as a result of family relationship breakdown, drug or alcohol issues or a mental health problem, as they are on their way back into society... The small farm in Kirknewton owned by the charity Edinburgh Cyrenians is hoping to launch a vegetable box scheme in mid-June to make their produce available to nearby residents. The farm produces a range of staple vegetables, salad and fruit under the care of farm manager Rob Davidson, two full time employees and a team of volunteers. The rural environment is safe and secluded for vulnerable young people to progress their rehabilitation and learn new skills. Produce is currently sold via Balerno Farmers’ Market and a couple of shops in Edinburgh, but the proposed box scheme would put the produce right in the village – boxes will be available for collection from the community Green Room on Kirknewton Main Street. Boxes will include seasonal vegetables and fruit grown on the farm with salad year-round from their large poly houses. The farm produces jams, chutney and hundreds of free-range eggs every week.

Who are the Cyrenians and why do they have a farm in Kirknewton? The Cyrenians is an Edinburgh charity set up in 1968 to tackle homelessness in the city centre. They support people who have become excluded from family, home, work or community. Their philosophy is one of journeying together on the road to change; where one of us stumbles, the other will wait, lift their neighbour up again and once again walk on together. The farm in Kirknewton was set up in 1972 for people who needed to get away from the pressures of the city as part of their recovery. It is funded by the charity but is working towards being self-sustaining. Volunteer workers and financial donations are always welcome. See www. cyreniansfarm.org.uk KONECT

RECIPE & FOOD NOTES
By Anne Pinkerton
Our food shopping has almost lost touch with the seasonal production of the basic ingredients. The supermarkets do remind us - announcing in April that new season Jersey Royals are in store, or that these are the first Scottish strawberries - but otherwise it’s by promotions for “summer sizzles” or “winter comfort food.” Even so these need a little checking by looking out of the window because the weather and day length will often tell you it’s not yet whatever season the marketers hope it is! By May we can buy new season vegetables grown in Britain: finger carrots, peas, spring greens, salad leaves, spinach and asparagus. Food usually tastes better from local growers because it’s harvested when ready and brought to your plate more quickly - not, as with much fruit grown abroad, picked in the anticipation that the long trip to your kitchen will give it time to ripen. Around us in West Lothian there are several suppliers whose whole business is local food. Some deliver boxes of produce, others you buy on site. Some shops for example MacIver at Currie will have marmalade oranges and damsons when the supermarkets do not. On the A71 at Burnwynd the tiny shop sells potatoes and other veg but also duck eggs. On the edge of East Calder the small holding growing leeks, cabbage, neeps and really good potatoes sells their own and other people’s produce. They are open when the huge carrot sign is up beside the road. Grow Wild in Broxburn, The Whole Shebag in West Calder and Fruit n Veg to You in Livingston do veg box deliveries. You receive regular supplies of fresh fruit and veg which change as the growing season progresses. The Cyrenians at their farm and orchard in Humbie Holdings, Kirknewton, grow a wide range of fruit, veg and herbs. They also keep
46
hens and bees and sell lemon curd, jams and chutneys made from farm produce. Some of their production goes to the market in Morningside (every 3rd Saturday in the month, next dates May 16th and June 20th) and they are planning to start a local weekly box scheme. This will be distributed from The Green Room in Kirknewton. See their questionnaire at www.surveymonkey. com/s/3HR7K7B There are hopes that the local community could become more involved in growing fresh foods and that the Cyrenians could become part of a Community Supported Agriculture Farm. “Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) is a partnership between farmers and the local community. Benefits are enjoyed by all sides: farmers for instance can receive a more stable and secure income and closer connection with their community, and consumers can benefit by eating fresh healthy food, feeling more connected to the land where their food is grown and learning new skills.” Over the hills from us at Whitmuir the farm has a restaurant, art gallery and food shop. Children can feed the hens and see the food growing. Plants are for sale and the range of menus in the restaurant prove that ethically sourced food just tastes good! The monthly farmers’ market at Balerno (every 2nd Saturday in the month, next dates are May 9th & June 13th) has bread, cheese, meat, preserves and vegetables all from small local producers. The Saturday farmers’ market under the castle in Edinburgh has a wonderful selection of the best Scottish food, everything grown within 50 miles of us (except the coffee and tea). Shopping like this is a social event; it’s interesting to talk to the people who know all about their produce. They can explain how to get the best from unfamiliar cuts of meat or give recipes for different vegetables. Buying local keeps you in touch with the seasons and helps you be in control of the quality of the food you eat.

Asparagus with new potatoes Best with British asparagus and potatoes 1kg asparagus 1kg small new potatoes (Ayrshire are good) 6 slices Parma or other finely sliced ham 400g unsalted butter melted Lemon juice Method: Wash the asparagus and snap off the tough piece of stem. Keep these for soup. Tie the stems into 6 bundles. Rubber bands are fine for this. Wash the potatoes and scrape if you wish. Put potatoes and tough bits of stalk in a deep pan and cover with water bring to the boil and then stand the asparagus bundles on top. Cover, use foil if the pan is not tall enough, and continue cooking 15 minutes or till asparagus is tender. Remove it and carefully wrap the bundles in the ham. Drain the potatoes (keep the water and stalks for soup) and arrange everything on a serving dish. Pour some of the butter over the vegetables and put the rest in a warm jug with lemon juice. Serve with crusty beard to mop up the juices.

The world of Warhammer may be something you simply don’t understand, but if you have a boy aged 8 to grown up with a propensity for gaming, modelling and general geekiness, you are very likely to be acquainted with this fantasy world. And if you are that said boy, you will be delighted to know that we at Potter Around are approved suppliers of the Warhammer and Warhammer 40K models, paints and accessories. We have a large supply in stock and can order anything in quickly (with no postage costs). We also have a fantastic shed given over to the realm of boys and their models, tables set up with boards for gaming and painting stations. We have a number of models that can be borrowed for playing. Every Saturday 2-4pm the ‘shed’ opens and the world of Warhammer comes to West Lothian. There are a number of lads well versed in the world who can show any ‘newbies’ the ropes – give you tips on painting, explain the rules of the game etc. We are the only venue in West Lothian to both sell models and have a well appointed space in which to play, offering help and advice for those wanting access to this mysterious and fantastic world.
It’s a game of strategy Pop in anytime to check out the stock and come along on a Saturdays to have some fun. There will be painting competitions from time to time so look out for these. All we ask is that you buy your supplies from us. The games we play and the majority of models kept in stock are 40K based but we have Fantasy Models too and well as rule books and complete sets and of course, we can order anything in including all the paints and accessories. Warhammer is a great hobby for a young lad to take up if you are looking for something new to occupy your child as it keeps the brain active, involves a lot of strategy and does not involve a screen of any kind. And if you are more of a modeller than a gamer, you can order tools and paints and model to your heart’s content with plenty space and no worries about making a mess in your parent’s home! Call if you want more details or pop in to check us out. Potter Around, Overton Farm, Kirknewton, West Lothian, EH27 8DD
Enter the draw to win a box of your favourite models (up to value of £22). Simply text or email your name, phone number and answer to 07854 492638 or email editor@ konectdirectory.co.uk with the subject “Warhammer”.
Q: What is the name of the weekly magazine that goes with the game of Warhammer? Closing date for entries 15th May 2015
