hat a fantastic spell of summer weather we had! I hope everyone managed to make the most of it – outdoors eating, getting exterior maintenance jobs done, planning days out – all without having to change plans for rain all the time! Summer’s not over! There is still plenty going on in West Lothian in August, browse our What’s On section. I can highly recommend the “art in the garden” at New Hopetoun Gardens, see page 28. A stroll around their gardens to see the installations, followed by coffee in their Orangery Tearoom, is a must-do for any garden-lovers before the end of August. For the “Local People” column this month I interviewed a best-selling romance author from Bathgate, a lovely and fascinating lady and now this magazine is off to print I will be able to finish reading the book she gave me – a great read so far! Remember if you are involved in any events coming up in the autumn, do send in details, we list community and not-forprofit events free of charge in our What’s On section.

LOCAL PEOPLE

“I wrote these books for myself. Once I’d finished them I thought: I may as well publish them and see how they go.”

West Lothian resident Leanne Marshall is taking me through a whistle-stop tour of her life, which includes childhood trauma, joining a West Lothian girl band, spending six years running a rescue centre for exotic animals, running a craft business, motherhood, generally surviving and now, to her delight, she finds herself a best-selling author.

The Carrero Series by L.T. Marshall is contemporary romance, but with a gritty edge. All the main characters have trauma of some sort in their backgrounds. “I didn’t have the best start in life, says Leanne. “In fact I had a crappy childhood.” It involved an unhappy childhood home, and she has had no relationship with her biological father since she was nine. “I’ve had some writing therapy; writing has always been my way of dealing with things, and I started writing when I was nine.”

Fast forward to 2016, and Leanne had written two full books out of what she intended to be a trilogy. “I wrote them for me. But I decided why not pop them on Amazon and see what happens?” They took off very quickly, with the first book reaching the top fifty romances in the UK within seven days; the second one reached the top twenty in 48 hours; and the third one in six hours. “I’d had most of the trilogy planned out before I started writing. And it just flowed. But after the first books were published I felt kind of sad; sad about stuff that had happened to me.” When the feedback started coming in though from readers who said the details in her books had really helped them, she realised: “I’m not done. I can make this go further.” Hence the third trilogy is almost finished, as well as two books which are selected chapters giving the story from the perspective of the male character. 8 | CALDERS

Leanne with her chihuahua Chico

Reader feedback testifies that the books evoke strong emotions. “I have people writing in to me really angry about what I have done to some of the characters. I can be cruel to my characters,” she says, “although I feel detached from them myself.”

In the process of learning all about publishing, Leanne set up her own publishing company, Pict Publishing, whose strapline is ‘Epic tales featuring strong modern women, written by women.’ “The idea was to support other authors who have a message. There is a small group of us who run the company to provide support to and empower other female voices.”

An arty nook in her kitchen is where Leanne works, the evidence of her artistic nature and resin craft business all around. “I work nine to three every day, to fit around my son’s school day, and work very intensely. I write very fast; a book typically takes me three weeks from idea to completion, and they are around 130,000 to 160,000 words apiece. I am completely drained for a few weeks after each one.” At time of printing, she has just completed book seven. The Carrero Effect series are available for Kindle on Amazon, search for “L.T. Marshall.” www.facebook.com/LTMarshallauthor www.ltmarshall.blog www.pictpublishing.com This article was written by Helen-Jane Shearer after interviewing author Leanne Marshall at home in Bathgate. HEALTH & BEAUTY

POST HOLIDAY BLUES Sun has such a damaging effect on our skin and hair. We all know about aftersun and treating our skin but what are the best remedies for our hair? It’s all about moisture levels. The aftersun treatments for hair are basically to replenish the moisture the sun has taken from our hair. Firstly use a uva protector whilst in the sun. These tend to have moisturising qualities and are great for leaving your hair to dry naturally. After sun, use a moisturising mask, or a great alternative is coconut oil. On dry hair work your mask or oil into all of the mid-lengths and ends, wrap it up and if you want to protect your pillow, use a cap. Sleep with your mask on and wash your hair as normal the next morning to remove any excess oils and keep it clean. When hair is moisturised it will be supple and stretch like elastic, returning to its normal length. If it is dry it will become brittle and snap, so it is essential to keep it hydrated after being in the sun or on holiday. And of course go and get a haircut and keep the ends in tip top condition because healthy hair will always be fashionable.

The Hair column is contributed by Sophie Laidlaw. Sophie is Director @ wonderland Livingston. www.wonderlandlivingston.co.uk 12 | CALDERS

Nature is wonderful - beautiful, inspiring and with the most remarkable capacity to recover following adversity. Given a bit of time, the wondrous, creative energy which sustains and recreates brings forth new life from destruction.

Despite hard frosts of winter or piles of snow, tiny green shoots of life wait, sustained in the dark, cold soil ... to raise their heads in spring - bringing flowers of such beauty and delicacy that, especially when you look closely, you might wonder at the unseen energy of such a wonderful world. But as humans, we try so hard to control things. Rather than trusting in such unseen momentum, as it seems all other aspects of Nature do, we develop a stressed determination to control our world - and often that of others too. Yes, it’s important to have a sense, insofar as is possible, of the direction in which we’d like to go in life. But perhaps we can relax and enjoy the ride a little more once we’ve set our ‘sat nav’? Must we drive with knuckles white with tension? We are part of Nature too. The ego might suggest we’re rather superior but actually we’re just one aspect within that wondrous, sustaining momentum which brings new life through the darkness. This column is contributed by Rosanna Veitch. “I have worked as a counsellor for 30 years, I see clients of all ages and with all forms of emotional distress in my peaceful therapy room at my home. Please feel free to call for a chat. Everyone is welcome, and I’m happy to adjust my fee if money is tight.” T: 0131 449 2580 W: www.effectivecounsellingedinburgh.com @KonectDirectory

HOME IMPROVEMENT

A change of wallcovering can transform your space, so here are some exciting ideas. A plain white wall can show off a colourful collection or provide a counterpoint to patterned upholstery, while vibrant wallpaper can inject colour and create interest in a room. It’s all about context, and is as important as selecting colours, fabrics and furnishings. Transform a room with a fresh coat of paint on walls and woodwork, but buy sample pots and trial them on card first, to assess the colour’s appearance and finish in different areas and at different times of day. Alternatively, consider wallpaper, where choices include conventional machine-printed designs, natural woven fibres, light-reflecting metallic papers and waterproof vinyls. For something different, think about hand-finished papers featuring cut-work, stitching or appliqué, interactive papers that you can colour in or add stickers to, hand-blocked papers, three-dimensional designs incorporating crystals, beading, sequins or tiny LED lights, digitally printed papers to your own design or magnetic wallpapers that work as a

Exotic Leaf Pattern wallpaper mural, to order, Wallsauce www.wallsauce.com @KonectMagazines

IDEAS for feature walls

• Transform your wall with peel-off stickers, with designs from simple shapes to complex illustrations • Wallpaper with an oversized pattern and vivid colours makes a great focal point on just one wall • Consider modern, graphic paint effects such as bold horizontal stripes or an ombré/dip dye look • Large maps (old or new) are attractive and educational. Simply paste straight on to the wall. Try sheet music and wrapping paper, too • Take any digital image and have it enlarged to cover an entire wall. Eye-poppingly gorgeous • Use a variety of vintage wallpaper samples as a colourful collage. Combine with paint, too, if you wish noticeboard. Rather than hang vertically all around a room, create a feature by papering just one wall, choose different colourways of the same pattern to use in different areas, hang wallpaper horizontally, or mix up the designs. Tiles come in a great variety of colours and patterns, and can be sleek and machine-made or rustic and hand-made, shiny and glazed or matt and unglazed, smooth or textured, or digitally printed with your own designs. They are ideal for bathrooms, showers and behind kitchen worktops, but are also great for hallways, conservatories, laundry rooms, utility rooms and possibly even as part of a living area, too. With imagination and ingenuity, almost any flat surface can provide an interesting decorative effect. Timber panelling insulates and can hide wonky walls and is a great insulator. A sheet of mirror reflects light around to make the room seem bigger, while sheets of plastic laminate or solid composite have potential and, being waterproof, are suitable for bathrooms. Paper-backed fabric is great for insulating against cold and noise – as is leather, which is luxurious and fire-retardant. Cork is warm, soft to the touch, eco-friendly, insulating and soundproofing, and comes in a range of colours, patterns and textures. Polished plaster or sheet metal are other options. CALDERS | 17

HOME IMPROVEMENT

EKCO SpaceKube – More Room, Less Stress What would you do with an extra room? Create a new dining kitchen? Perhaps another bedroom for a growing family or an elderly parent? How about a home office so you can wave goodbye to the daily commute? If you love the idea of more space, you have a few options. The first is to upsize to a bigger home. However, when you take account of the stress and cost of moving such as legal fees, furniture removal and an increased mortgage - the sums don’t always stack up.

Another room could add 20% value to your home Another option is to add an extra room to your existing home. This will not only give you the valuable space you need but will add up to 20% of your home’s value, according to a report in The Guardian. An attic renovation can give you an extra couple of bedrooms or a new master bedroom with an en-suite. You can also gain another living space by adding a traditional extension. However, it can often take months to complete and, depending on the height, may require planning permission. Installing a conservatory or orangerie is a definite possibility, but although they will make the perfect garden room or additional dining area their versatility is limited. However, there is a new way to gain the extra room you need which is quick to install and will add value to your home – SpaceKube from EKCO.

A dining space to add value to your home 22 | CALDERS

SpaceKube time-saving extension

EKCO is renowned for supplying and fitting kitchens and bi-fold doors across Scotland. It therefore seems logical to step into the home extension market too which is why they launched SpaceKube. SpaceKube is a new type of extension, manufactured off-site in EKCO’s workshop, delivered in panels and fitted to your home in just a few weeks with the minimum of fuss. EKCO will tailor its SpaceKube to your specifications which means you can have a new dining kitchen complete with Pronorm units, Neff appliances and bi-fold doors for extra light and space. Of course, SpaceKube isn’t just for dining kitchens; it can be used for any purpose including an extra bedroom with an en-suite bathroom or wet room, home office or even a home-gym. Sustainable materials

SpaceKube is a completely robust structure manufactured from sustainable materials inside and out and usually doesn’t require planning permission. Ekco will however, undertake the necessary checks on your behalf if required. SpaceKube garden room

Garden rooms and summer houses have grown in popularity as people try to find some private space to unwind after a hard day. SpaceKube also has that covered as it doesn’t have to be fitted to your home. In fact, it can be placed anywhere in your garden to offer you that little bit of peace and quiet when you most need it. To find out more about SpaceKube call EKCO, Uphall on 01506 857 007.

GARDENING PROJECT

For July and August we have installed original works of art by artists working in Scotland in our themed display gardens here at New Hopetoun Gardens. Our aim is to inspire our visitors to add some outdoor art into their own gardens to enhance the view from inside or when sitting in or exploring your garden. It can just be interesting rocks, drift wood off the beach or perhaps a birdbath. Some of the ‘art’ in our gardens here have a story. This picture shows Diana who was the Roman Goddess of hunters, the moon and unmarried mothers, bathing in our woodland. She had a fierce temper and was contemptuous of men. Actaeon the Hunter accidentally comes upon her washing at the pool. She is incensed that a man should

28 | CALDERS

see her bathing and she punishes him by turning him into a stag. Immediately his hounds chase him and tear him to bits! You don’t need such dramatic stories, but we do believe that you would enjoy some decorative pieces to add interest and focal points for the eye. Do pop along this summer and get some inspiration from ‘art in the garden’.

Original artwork at New Hopetoun Gardens The gardening project is contributed by Dougal Philip, New Hopetoun Gardens. Inspiring, informing and entertaining, for more than 40years.

PROPERTY MATTERS

The market in West Lothian is hot and property is in short supply! Some sellers feel that if they have “missed” the spring market, they should wait until September before selling their property; but there are solid reasons for marketing your home during the summer, particularly this year. Firstly, your house is likely to look at its very best. The bright days and long evenings mean that the property will look light and airy, and any views from the house will be accentuated. Your garden will be in full bloom and adds real value to the purchaser’s perception of your home - they won’t just be looking at rooms! Longer evenings also mean that the opportunity for positive viewings is extended, as partners can view together. Serious buyers do not let holidays, sports, etc. get in their way and are sometimes frustrated by the reduction in choice over the holiday period as the tendency is to hold off from bringing new stock to market until well after the summer holidays are over. This year however, the number of properties coming to market in the first quarter of 2018 was lower than in previous 32 | CALDERS

years (partly due to the long winter) which has created a lag of approximately 3 months from where the market would normally be. We are therefore experiencing a very high demand for properties over the summer months as the buoyant spring market shows no sign of abating.

The ongoing imbalance of supply and demand across the county continues to push selling prices higher with West Lothian seeing a remarkable 13.3% increase in average house prices over the past 12 months (*source ROS) the second highest region for growth in Scotland. So, if you are considering the possibility of selling, why not help supply the demand this summer, it could pay you handsomely. The monthly Property Matters column is contributed by Craig Turpie. Craig is a director at Turpie & Co Estate Agents and Letting Agents with extensive knowledge of the West Lothian Property Market and over 20 years experience in bespoke sales and marketing. @KonectDirectory

VET’S TIP

Are vaccines safe for pets? The aim of vaccinating is to keep our pets safe. Very rarely, vets see adverse reactions, but balancing the potential risks vs protection from fatal diseases such as parvovirus or myxomatosis, vets strongly recommend vaccination as a safe way to keep our animals healthy. What are the risks? Owners’ main concerns are either that the vaccine won’t work, or that their pet will suffer from an adverse reaction. Adverse reactions may be classified as “serious” or “non-serious”. Non-serious reactions would be things like temporary injection site swellings, hypersensitivity reactions; mild upset stomachs and being a little ‘off colour’ for a day or so. Thankfully, more serious, life-threatening reactions, though they can happen, are incredibly rare.

Vaccines undergo rigorous testing before they are used in our pets and vets will report any adverse vaccine reactions to the Veterinary Medicines Directorate, should they occur. This allows manufacturers to evaluate their vaccine’s efficacy and safety, to constantly improve their ability to help animals. To summarise – are vaccines safe? Yes. They are tested extensively and any adverse reactions must be reported to the Veterinary Medicines Directorate. Yes. Vets try only to vaccinate healthy pets who require vaccination, to reduce the chance of any adverse reactions. No treatment is guaranteed not to cause adverse reactions, but fortunately serious reactions are very rare and on balance, vaccination is certainly seen as the safer option. Please speak to your vet if you have questions about vaccination and bear in mind – Google isn’t a vet. The Vet’s Tip is contributed by Michael McCallum, BVM & S, MRCVS, GP Cert (Ophthal), Vet Surgeon at The Lamond Veterinary Clinic

4 large egg whites 225g caster sugar 1 tsp cornflour 1 tsp white wine vinegar 1 tsp vanilla extract 500g fresh strawberries 200g fresh raspberries 25g icing sugar, sifted, plus extra to serve 2 tsp lemon juice 300ml double cream, softly whipped 200g Greek yoghurt Chocolate curls, to decorate

Tip:

The unfilled meringues will keep in an airtight container for 3-4 days.

Serves 4 - Ready in 2 hours

1. Preheat the oven to 150°C, fan 130C, Gas Mark 1. Line 2 large baking sheets with baking paper. Draw six 9 cm circles on each sheet of baking paper. Turn the paper over. 2. Using an electric food mixer whisk the egg whites in a clean grease-free bowl until stiff. Gradually whisk in the sugar, one tablespoon at a time, whisking well after each addition to make a firm and glossy meringue. 3. Blend the cornflour, vinegar and vanilla extract together in a small bowl and fold into the meringue. Divide the meringue between the marked circles.

4. Bake for 45 minutes - 1 hour until the meringues are crisp and dry on the outside. Turn the oven off and leave them to cool completely in the oven with the door slightly open.

5. Hull and chop most of the strawberries (reserving about 8 for decoration). Place in a food processor or blender with half the raspberries and pulse to make a thick puree. Transfer to a bowl and stir in the icing sugar and lemon juice. Fold the yogurt into the cream. 6. Carefully remove the meringues from the baking paper. Sandwich the meringues together in stacks of three with cream and the fruit puree. Top with the reserved strawberries and remaining raspberries and decorate with chocolate curls. Dust with icing sugar just before serving.

VISIT WEST LOTHIAN

The Perfect Place

West Lothian is the perfect place to spend your summer holidays because there is so much going on! July is host to a variety of events around West Lothian, such as Spectacular Jousting at Linlithgow Palace on the entire weekend of the 1st. Jousting has been a tradition at Linlithgow for many years. You can watch your favourite noblemen battle it out with swords and lances as their horses thunder up the tracks. There are also comedy shows, live history displays, foot combats and the opportunity to take a walk through the colourful camps. It is always a jam packed day of fun! There is also a Water Safari taking place on Linlithgow Loch on the 15th, where you can take to the Loch on a Canadian Canoe to experience phenomenal views of the Palace you wouldn’t otherwise see, as well as get up close and personal to the wildlife on the loch. This is a great outdoor activity to experience, especially during the warm July weather.

There are also lots of free things to do in West Lothian, as we know that summer is an expensive season so it’s always nice to be able to have fun on a budget! Why not pack up a picnic and spend the day in one of our country parks? Beecraigs, Polkemmet and Almondell & Calderwood offer plenty of walking routes and gorgeous scenery, you can check out our website for more information on opening hours, travel and parking. If you’re a television enthusiast and a fan of the series Outlander, Mary’s Meanders offers fantastic walking tours of the filming locations across West Lothian, so you can experience the true nature of Outlander whilst topping up your tan! You can head over to our website right now to see loads more suggestions for summer, from family fun days out to attractions based upon art, culture, history and heritage, you won’t be left short for things to do.
