Hello neighbours We’re looking forward to the clocks going forward on the 25th of March, and it will soon be time to be thinking about the garden and all those outside jobs on the house. As usual you will find that local businesses can supply all the services you need, so do try and support small local traders by checking the Konect Directory first! Local Councillor Carl John has been looking into the possibility of reviving a sport that used to be very popular in the Calders and Kirknewton – quoits. So popular in fact that Kirknewton and East Calder teams were world champions and Scottish champions respectively at one point. Read about it on pages 8 and 9. Mothers Day is March 18th and many local businesses have got some great offers on, so do check them out in the pages of the Konect Directory and maybe even treat the whole family to a meal out or some entertainment.

Anyone for quoits?

urling a heavy steel ring across a pitch to a near invisible target - sounds like a good Scottish pub sport? This is quoits, which used to be a very popular sport here, and Councillor Carl John is looking into the possibility of re-establishing a quoits team locally after receiving a call from someone in Sussex offering to return his great grandfather’s quoiting cup, won as a member of the world champion Kirknewton Quoiting Club in 1902 ... In 2011 West Lothian Council received a phone call from a gentleman in Sussex asking to get details of councillors representing Kirknewton. This gentleman was clearing his grandfather’s house and in the loft he found a cup and various letters to do with his great grandfather and Kirknewton Quoiting Club. It appears that his great grandfather was a member of the Kirknewton team who had been world champions. He said that if Kirknewton still had a team he would send these back to them. Councilllor Carl John told him that the team was no longer in existence and thanked him for his offer. Intrigued though, over the last few months Carl has been looking back through the history of quoiting in the Calders area and found that Kirknewton were world champions in 1902 and that East Calder were Scottish champions in 1912/1913, 1921 and 1922. A Mr P. Killoran of East Calder was the individual Scottish champion in 1928, winning a prize of £100 - a significant amount at the time. The game of quoits is based on the ancient Greek discus and involves throwing a heavy steel ring across a pitch and into a clay pit, as close as possible to or over a pin that is embedded in the clay. This is not a game for wimps – the quoit weighs

between 9lb and 12lb (approx. 4kg – 5.45kg) and has to be thrown 18 yards (approx. 16.5 m). It has been played for centuries in Britain though its popularity has waxed and waned over time. In Scotland, it enjoyed a revival in the nineteenth and early twentieth century. It was associated particularly with agricultural and mining areas, as it was inexpensive to play and required little equipment or space, hence its popularity in West Lothian during the mining heyday. Or maybe it was something to do with working in the mines all week that made one feel a need to heave metal at the weekend! In any case, almost every village had a quoiting green, which was almost always located near to the pub. In fact 1)

the heavy physical nature of the game and its association with alcohol consumption had in some parts led to its being discouraged by local councils. Oakbank, East Calder and Kirknewton all had pitches, where vast crowds attended matches in the 1920s when the sport was at its height here. The Kirknewton pitch was at the bottom of Whitemoss Road, and presumably attached to the Huntingtower Pub directly opposite. The East Calder club was formed in 1894 and re-formed in 1904, and a Mr John McGill was

president of the club for 21 consecutive years. The Kirknewton club was formed in 1902. The clay pits are enclosed in a wooden frame and are 3ft square. The heavy quoits hit the ground with force and embed themselves in the clay. The angle and orientation of the quoit is tactically very important. The stake target is buried so that this top is almost flush with the clay, so is barely visible from the running boards at the other end of the pitch. The aim is to get your quoit as close as possible to the stake target, or ideally to encircle it, so distance and precision are involved. Like rugby, there is a split in the sport in Britain, with Scotland and Wales playing the “Long Game” and England playing the “Northern Game”. The rules vary slightly. Other forms of the game have existed over time, including horseshoe throwing and a form of quoits made from horseshoes bent to make circles. After the Second World War the sport died away. A house now stands on the site of the Kirknewton quoiting pitch. An international match is however still played each year between Scotland and Wales but there are only a couple of clubs left in Scotland and very few

in Wales, so it would be good to get a new team up and running. Anyone interested in getting involved in re-establishing the Kirknewton Quoiting Club should get in touch with Councillor Carl John to form a team (see side box). We may even be able to form a demo team for a demo game at the Gala this summer!

ver 20 people recently attended the ‘Give It A Go’ event in Kirknewton, and in total over 70 new volunteers have come forward to offer their skills and help on projects across Kirknewton. Maybe you would like to ‘Give It A Go’ too. Help join the committee or be a volunteer with these current groups Parent Council Parent Staff Association (school fundraising) Park Action Group (park development) Cycle & Multi Path Development Group Gala Rainbows/Brownies At the moment it feels like the Development Trust are presenting you with several jigsaw pieces but perhaps not providing the big picture. So here is my attempt to help you piece together the puzzle! We currently have £110,000 of Leader funds to build the local Resource Centre on the Old Gospel Hall site. The funding is dependent on getting planning permission and a building warrant. If this is not granted we lose the funding and the development. This project allows us to apply to the lottery for growing community assets. At the moment we have a funding bid of £330,000 in for consideration that will help fund a Development Officer, Admin/Finance support and a Volunteer and Youth CoOrdinator for the next five years. If we lose

the chance of having the asset (the Resource Centre) we are also in danger of losing the potential funding for the lottery. The current Development Officer role ends in April 2012. The intention is for the Resource Centre to be self financing within five years (or before). Any shortfalls, salaries or development money needed to support activity in the village beyond the next five years will come from our potential community benefit and investment in renewable energy - such as the Fauch Hill Wind Farm development. The Trust will report on the findings of the recent Community Council survey on the Fauch Hill Wind Farm at the Trust AGM on 1st March and the next issue of Konect To make things happen it is important we come together from time to time. That is why we are ran the ‘Give It A Go’ event in February in the Village Hall. You can still get involved in setting up a youth club, starting a new group, helping out with a current group or getting involved with the Development Plan – see the list above. These clubs could meet in the current Development Trust Office and Village Hall, or maybe the Church Hall, School or at the sports pitch. Ultimately there will be a place to go and support for what you want to do if the Resource Centre is built and additional funds are forthcoming. This time of year is perfect for walking - my favourite time of year in fact, with crisp, clear, sunny mornings and hard-packed ground. The air always seems particularly fresh and as the snowdrops pop their little heads up, it makes one feel good to be alive. I don’t really mind where I walk when the sun is shining and it’s a beautiful morning but it is of course always good to find somewhere different to walk. Living where we do in the Calders area there are more walking routes - long and short - than one could probably ever walk in many years and we often stick to the tried and tested ones we know. Ancient pathways criss-cross with newly made walking and cycle routes making a network of paths that run through both woodland and built-up areas as well as across open land. Mid Calder is one such area and having filling up our tanks with fuel on a regular basis at the Lizzie Brice garage I have always noted the green sign saying “Lizzie Brice’s Strip” and wondered where it might lead. So I made a point this fine fresh morning of parking up and taking a look.

Cross over and into another piece of tidied up woodland - this time Raw Strip. Again the woodland has been made accessible for local people to enjoy and the path meanders through here too. However the surfaced road runs alongside the woodland and eventually heads over a footbridge to Dedridge in one direction - also part of the main Dedridge to Almondvale cycle route. This is where ancient pathways, new walking paths and cycle routes all intertwine and you can simply take your pick as to where you want to wander. I walked on a much narrower, older, surfaced path that ran alongside the woodland and the cycle paths and eventually came out on an open piece of ground where the view opens up looking across the River Almond. Keep going and you come into the centre of the village of Mid Calder, or turn right and walk on the pavements back up to the garage. Alternatively, simply

retrace your steps and enjoy the quieter paths. When you walk along paths that are so close to so many houses, it is always hard to imagine that you are in such a built up area. The trees hide the houses and you can imagine you are far from the beaten track. The lucky residents of these houses simply open their back doors and have a choice of paths to walk.

March Recipe and Food Notes: Pancakes By Anne Pinkerton

ancakes are not only for Shrove Tuesday! Pancake races are fun; tossing a pancake on the run is a skill but the food value of the leathery subject of all the activity is pretty low! The reason for eating pancakes at the beginning of Lent is to use up rich ingredients before the 40 days of fasting as preparation for Easter. The end of winter used to be a time of hardship before modern methods of food preservation. Now we have fresh food from all over the world in great variety, so we may have lost touch with the importance of the old food rituals. However let’s not forget the pancake. They are cheap, versatile and make a good supper or lunch dish. The simple pancake is really easy to make. It is a little time consuming to start with but pancakes freeze well and you can make a stack and then have reserves stored for quick meals when you are busy. Crepe Suzette are the luxurious cousin of the Scots drop scone and Yorkshire pudding, but all are made from the same ingredients: flour, egg, milk and water and a little oil or butter. Pancakes can also have potato flour, buck-wheat flour or a purée of starchy vegetables enriching the batter and making them more filling. They can be savoury or sweet; in fact they are a very versatile Basic Batter 120gm plain flour 10gm melted butter or sunflower oil, 1large or2 small egg walnut or other flavoured oil depending on the flavour you want. ¼ pint or a little more cold milk Method Sift the flour into a bowl - this helps to prevent lumps. Make a well in the middle and crack in the egg(s) and add a little of

the milk and the oil or melted butter. Mix to a smooth, thick batter. Do this with an electric hand-whisk, balloon whisk or wooden spoon. By adding only some of the liquid at first you are more likely to avoid lumps. Then mix in the rest of the liquid. Leave the batter to rest, at least ½ hour or up to 4 or 5 hours.

Cook the pancakes in a thick-bottomed oiled or lightly buttered pan. Regard the first pancake as a test run. You can judge whether the heat is correct and tell if you need to thin the batter. Thin lacy pancakes are nicest so just add a little cold water. Cook till the batter changes colour and looks a bit transparent, then turn with a palette-knife and cook the other side. Tossing is not expected. If you are making to freeze, pile the pancakes 2 by 2 interleafed with clingwrap or grease-proof paper. Then you can defrost as many or as few as you need. This amount should make 10 or 12, depending on your pan size! Fillings : Orange juice and sugar with a little marmalade. Slice banana onto the pancake before turning and roll up with brown sugar. Fill with stoned cherries or good cherry jam and grated chocolate. Maple syrup and whipped cream. Or, my favourite….Add crispy bacon and drizzle with black treacle as in Holland. 

Make the batter in the usual way and leave to rest. Cook in a non-stick pan if you have one. Be careful about the temperature, do not burn the chocolate. Spread with warm nutella, roll up and serve with cold whipped cream. Not for slimmers, but wonderful.

Savoury supper pancakes Leek and ham. 4 leeks sliced, half cooked and squeezed dry 125gm ham or bacon bits rough chopped. White sauce made with 10gm butter, 1015 gm plain flour and ½ pint milk, salt, pepper and mustard or lemon juice to taste. Mix the leeks and ham into the sauce and fill 4 pancakes, roll them up and, lay them in an oven-proof dish. Grate a little cheese over the top and bake in 160oC oven for about 30mins, till bubbling and hot all through. Mushroom and onion 2 large onions sliced fine 10gm butter and 10gm oil 450 gm mushrooms slice or rough chopped A pinch of dried thyme or mixed herbs 10-15 gm plain flour 1/2pt milk Salt and pepper and a taste of sherry or white wine if liked. Fry the onion in the oil and butter till golden brown, drain and then fry the mushrooms in the same oil. Return the cooked onions to the pan and use the 40

Not a lot of people know how surreal i am On the 30th March booking will be essential for Arrabal’s surreal masterpiece ‘The Architect and the Emperor of Assyria’, interpreted through a number of disciplines by the Plutot La Vie Theatre Company.
