MESSAGE FROM THE EDITIOR

SOME INFO ABOUT US:

There is a lot going on in August – there always seems to be a real burst of activity before the end of the summer. Various summer holiday programmes are still running for the children, and check the What’s On page for local community events. It’s also of course back to school month, and our food notes this month tackle the task of kids’ lunchbox ideas.

The walk feature is a short walk at Dreghorn Woods, which is a relatively new plantation with an interesting backstory. It can also be the starting point to any number of longer routes in the Pentlands. And probably most of us have walked along the Water of Leith through the Dell at some point; the information panel near Spylaw Park at the site of the former railway station gives some information about the railway line that used to run here, and this month we’ve printed an article with a bit more background about it, see pages 8-9.

ADVERT BOOKING DEADLINE: 15th of month prior to print

Suzanne interviewed local artist Jenny Matthews for the Village People column this month. Her floral watercolours are beautiful and you can see them at a couple of exhibitions coming up.

LOCAL HISTORY

There is little left for the casual observer to notice today of the picturesque branch line that ran along the Water of Leith for six miles between Colinton and Balerno. Built primarily to service the many mills along the river, it opened in 1874 after ten years of negotiations and delays, and had a profound impact on the development of Colinton, Juniper Green, Balerno and Currie. The Balerno Branch was a loop off the main trunk line of the Caledonian Railway (“The Caley”) running from Carlisle to Edinburgh. Before the Balerno Branch, the mills on the Water of Leith had already benefited from the Edinburgh branch of the main line which opened in 1848, with stations at Slateford (later Kingsknowe), Currie and Kirknewton. Paper mills, grain mills, snuff mills and the lone flax mill all received their raw materials by cart after they were unloaded at Currie or Slateford. Similarly, finished products had to be taken by cart and loaded onto trains. The mill owners felt that efficiency would be greatly improved by a rail loop serving them close to the river. They approached the Caledonian Railway Company, who were receptive to the idea and agreed to build and operate the railway. As with many other railway projects, shares were to be issued, and were specific to the Balerno Branch. But first an Act of Parliament was required in London because, among other reasons, there would need to be compulsory land purchases. There was noisy local opposition to the proposed line particularly from landowners; claims included health hazards from increased pollution due to the mills increasing production, reduced value of properties due to spoiled views, and best of all “in such a narrow district the introduction of a large number of Navvies might be productive of disorder and breaches of the Peace and of immorality in the villages to the great and lasting increase of the Parish burdens.” Nevertheless, an Act of Parliament authorising the Balerno Branch received Royal 8 | THE DELL DIRECTORY

Assent in 1865 by Queen Victoria. It specifies that where public (“parish”) housing was to be compulsorily acquired “occupied by persons belonging to the labouring classes”, eight weeks notice must be given to the tenants provided 15 or more houses were affected. For 14 or fewer houses, no notice for the tenants was required at all! No sooner had the branch received approval than The Caley suffered a financial crisis. Money raised for the local branch was illegally used to pay off other debts, and it looked like the project would be abandoned. However the mill owners, farmers and other businessmen weren’t going to lose their railway without a fight! An agreement was reached for a new bill, and The Caley would be very strictly monitored as to how it spent its money, with a deadline of two and a half years to completion. Sir William Gibson-Craig, second Baronet of Riccarton, Lord Clerk Register and local landowner decided to fire all his guns even at this late stage. Writing in The Scotsman and elsewhere he objected that such “small and poor villages could not provide any worthwhile traffic”, that the “church and manse would be ruined” and that it was “objectionable and dangerous”. The Caley seems to have been able to quieten him down by increasing the payment for the small plot of Sir William’s land they needed. (Maybe it ran in the family - his father had protested in 1834 that the experimental steam-coaches on the roads endangered lives by inducing panic in passing horses). The line finally opened on 1st August 1874, twenty months late, but by this time nobody seemed to care! There were a total of 28 bridges plus the tunnel at Colinton, and many cuttings, embankments and retaining walls where the

Far from causing more pollution on the river from busier mills, the railway actually reduced it. The railway line was used to run sewage pipes down to connect with the Edinburgh system, making the Water of Leith considerably cleaner.

rail ran very close to the Water of Leith. There were stations at Colinton, Juniper Green, Currie and Balerno. Labour mostly came from outwith the villages, but there are no records of there being any particular trouble with Navvies. Ironwork for several of the bridges was sub-contracted to a young Glasgow engineer named William Arrol who had just set up in business; he was later the main contractor on the Forth Rail bridge. Quarries opened in the district to provide stone for masonry bridges. The contract was very clear that there was to be no interference with the flow of water during the works – or if there was, the contractors would have to compensate mill owners for all interruptions to production.

Competition from road travel, the closure of many of the mills and financial difficulties with the owners of the line eventually led to its closure for passengers in 1943 – a notice was placed in The Scotsman giving just two weeks’ notice of the closure. It continued as a goods line until 1967, and the tracks were taken up in 1968. Most of the track is now the Water of Leith walkway. TUNNEL VISION: As it is today

Due to the cutbacks imposed by The Caley’s financial troubles, the loop was reduced to a single track just six miles long and was infamous for its tight loops and steep gradients. Two specially designed engines had to be produced, called the Balerno Pug. There was no turning facility at Balerno – the trains had to go to Kirknewton station to turn. As a single track, a strict system was in place to prevent trains from opposite direction colliding, and the only passing place was in Currie. Despite Sir William Gibson-Craig’s gloomy prediction that the villages were too poor to provide traffic, the service grew steadily. Soon articles were being written in Edinburgh about the pleasant day trips available, and middle class people were attracted to live along the line and commute to Edinburgh to work. Colinton and Juniper Green expanded rapidly this way.

WALK

In the process of looking for a new place to stretch the legs, I came across an article from the Woodland Trust about relatively new woodland, planted as Scotland’s First World War Centenary Wood. Nestled in the Pentland Hills, Dreghorn Woods was officially opened in 2015. Owned by the Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO), it’s one of four large areas of woodland being created through the First World War Centenary Woods Project. It includes a stone structure created as a space to rest, reflect and remember those who lived through the First World War. Eventually more than 50,000 native trees will be planted in the Pentland Hills to create a living, growing memorial. A grove of rowan trees within the woods is dedicated to the hundreds of soldiers from Leith who died in the Quintinshill Rail Disaster. Rowan, known in folklore as the traveller’s tree, was chosen to also remember those who never returned from the long journey from Scotland to the front lines. People from the local community have been helping to sow five acres of wildflowers and plant native trees including rowan, cherry, birch and Scots pine. Several thousand trees have already been planted and the 20 | THE DELL DIRECTORY

first colourful display of wild flowers made an appearance in 2015. This display gets better each year. The Woodland Trust aims for this wood to become a haven for local wildlife, including insects, goldfinches and pipistrelle bats and it will link up pockets of existing woodland, creating new wildlife corridors.

There was a very specialised kind of mud there. We called it Dreghorn Sludge. It caked on to your kilt so that the pleats lacerated your knees like knives The site for the woodland is steeped in military history and has been used as a training ground for over 100 years. During WWI many troops had their first experience of trenches on this mock battlefield. One of them was Captain William Ewart Gladstone-Millar. His daughter

Lynne Gladstone-Millar is a local historian who successfully campaigned to preserve the training trenches. His first posting was to Mortonhall and every day the soldiers marched to the training trenches in the Dreghorn Woods to prepare themselves for France. Lynne remembers her father saying: “There was a very specialised kind of mud there. We called it Dreghorn Sludge. It caked on to your kilt so that the pleats lacerated your knees like knives.” That sludge is now nurturing the new trees that have been planted. The new trees include an avenue of 50 wild service trees, planted to provide an annual flash of red during autumn when visitors can embrace the views across the city from the ‘Rest and Reflect’ stone seating area. The avenue is known as ‘The Weir Todd Walk’ and is dedicated to Euro Millions winner Chris Weir’s husband Colin Weir’s grandfathers who served in the First World War, and his father who served in the Second World War. Chris said: “William, Jimmy

Dreghorn Woods is situated near the Dreghorn Barracks so you might come across a group of soldiers of the 2nd Battalion Royal Regiment Scotland, marching with rather scary looking guns! Don’t worry – the guns aren’t loaded, but you may just need to skip out of the way rather promptly. Don’t let that put you off – anyone is welcome to wander these woods. Dreghorn Wood is only a small part of this vast arena. It makes for a compact walk and will stretch the legs but if you have the inclination and equipment you could walk to the Castlelaw Hill Fort over the other side of the hills. There are no waymarked routes but there is a map of the area at the entrance to the wood.

HOW TO GET THERE: Take Dreghorn Link over the by-pass and the slip road that takes you down onto the by-pass west. Before you join the bypass itself, take the small exit off to the left. There is a barrier, but if your car is too high (like mine) you can park before the barrier and walk in. There is a car park and access to the woods. Walking along a tarmac road you will soon see the map of the area and a gate to your left giving access to the Pentand Hills. The walk feature is written by Karen Murray. Karen is passionate about walking in the great outdoors having been brought up to love walking by her Father (still hillwalking in his 80s).

HEALTH & BEAUTY

People around us mostly seem to be ‘fine’ and perhaps we thought, as we grew towards adulthood, that we would arrive at a completely ‘sorted’ state of being. And yet it doesn’t feel quite so straightforward. From our young lives we may have brought ‘patterns’ or habits - of thinking or behaving - which we’re just not happy with. Perhaps the challenges and responsibilities of life leave us a bit stumped and we react to situations, rather than feeling we’re really making conscious choices. This is all entirely normal and we’re all actually in the same boat. So, perhaps we need a compassionate and clear-thinking Captain? We each already have an ‘Observing Self’ - a more objective and aware part of us which can notice our thinking and our feeling. Herein lies the key to our freedom to change. Next time a pattern pops up which you’d like to change, pause as early as you can, take a conscious breath ... and breathe out slowly. Listen to your Captain’s guidance and take a new path - whether this be purposefully thinking, doing or saying something different. After all, who’s in charge in there? This column is contributed by Rosanna Veitch. “I have worked as a counsellor for 30 years and am delighted to have been asked to write a little column here. I see clients of all ages and with all forms of emotional distress in my peaceful therapy room at my home. Please feel free to call for a chat. Everyone is welcome, and I'm happy to adjust my fee if money is tight.” www.effectivecounsellingedinburgh.com THE DELL DIRECTORY | 27

COMMUNITY

A new mural for Spylaw Park If you frequent Spylaw Park, you will have noticed a new mural appear on the old coach house outbuilding earlier in the summer. The artwork was designed and painted by Firrhill High School pupils, commissioned by CVE Group (Colinton Village Events).

The project began when Lorraine O’Shea, Chair of CVE Group, and Gayle Taylor from Colinton Parish Church approached Graham Hamilton, Head Teacher at Firrhill High School. Mr. Hamilton was very enthusiastic about the positive aspects of Firrhill being involved in a local project. The idea was then passed on to the school’s art teachers, Tracy Graham and Matilda Kirkwood, who in turn engaged the S1 pupils in this very worthwhile venture. The project took many months of planning, with the pupils being briefed to incorporate elements of the surrounding sites, the history of Colinton, and Spylaw Park. The bright colour palette was inspired by the work of local artist Edwin G. Lucas (19111990) whose paintings captured the local area around Colinton and The Water of Leith. A winning panel was picked by CVE Group and Alan Lucas (son of painter Edwin) from each of the five classes and formed the final design for the mural. Merchiston Castle School and local social enterprise, Tiphereth, kindly provided the transport for the pupils to and from Firrhill on each of the painting days in May. At the opening ceremony in May, Firrhill’s Soul band and Brass musicians performed, led by music teacher, Tony Courtney. Alan Lucas cut the ribbon to mark the official “opening” of the mural. Alan was delighted to see his father’s influence in the pupil’s work. Gayle Taylor composed a “sensory blessing” for the occasion. Gayle’s apt words ended in a call for us to “allow the rich colours, once more, to seep into the grey corners of our day and our hearts”. The project was also supported by the City of Edinburgh Council’s South West Transport & Environment Team and Community Payback. VILLAGE PEOPLE

Colinton resident Jenny Matthews has loved creating art since she could hold a paintbrush. Today she is a well-known watercolour artist. She is married to Pierre and they have two daughters, Zoë (20) and Marie (16). Jenny Matthews has recently returned from Fabriano, Italy, renowned for centuries of high quality paper production, and especially papers suitable for watercolour painting. Jenny was “Artist in Residence” at the Fabriano Paper Museum, and spent two weeks trying to capture the town and surrounding landscapes with her watercolours. I had the pleasure of learning about her life and development as an artist when I visited her at home. “Primary one was my first taste of art,” says Jenny, “except for colouring at home. Later on, in high school, I used to spend all of my time in the art department.” At age 17 Jenny entered Edinburgh College of Art, where she spent four years doing Drawing and Painting. “I was very fortunate to be taught by Elizabeth Blackadder DBE,” she says. “We used to go down to the Botanic Gardens to work, and they gave us access to all of their special plants.” At the end of her course, Jenny was required to put on a degree show, and was surprised when two-thirds of her paintings sold. She smiles as she tells me, “I put £90 on my favourite painting, because I didn’t want it to sell it, but it sold first, of course!” Jenny was immediately offered a solo exhibition by a gallery in Edinburgh. Flowers are her preferred subject matter: tulips and iris and sweet peas and more. You can see the Blackadder influence. But an even earlier influence was pressing wildflowers with her mother, when they were on holidays in the Highlands. Jenny met her husband, Pierre, through mutual friends when the Frenchman was an engineering student at Heriot Watt. He didn’t have much English, and she didn’t speak French. They went to

live in France and when they reached Lyon, Pierre said, “I’m not speaking English anymore.” So Jenny learned his language through “immersion”. Fortunately she is good at learning languages. She had to pick up the local language when she and Pierre moved to Surabaya, Indonesia. “I got switched on to green there,” she says, referring to her pervading memory from that period: the “fluorescent green” of the plants. Today Jenny spends her time painting, exhibiting and leading watercolour workshops. You really should see her work. C’est très beau! Go to www.jennymatthews.co.uk to learn more. FOOD & DRINK

The daily lunch-box routine can quickly become a dreaded task that you do late at night with your eyes propped open as you rummage in the fridge for something to make the kids’ lunch box with – only to find out next day that they didn’t eat it anyway and it comes back a squishy mess at the bottom of the school bag.

But it doesn’t have to be like that! Here, our food writer Anne Pinkerton gives some simple ideas to make the daily lunch-box routine easier – and healthier! There are lots of ideas online for things you could cook with your children so they are involved with their diet from the shop to their plate. If you cook a batch of Cornish pasties or sausage rolls together at home they can be frozen and eaten over the month. The BBC Good Food site is a good first stop if you need inspiration. What you are aiming at is a well-balanced and varying picnic every day of the school year! If you just buy processed snacks as the base, it’s very easy to give children too much salt and excessive amounts of sugar. So you are giving your kids the best chance if you control what’s in the food they eat.

The NHS outlines what a health lunch box should contain. You need: 1. A base of starchy carbohydrates: bread, pasta, rice or spuds 2. Protein: beans, lentils, peas, egg, fish, meat or cheese 3. A sugar-free drink, water or milk for younger children 4. A side dish: low-fat yogurt and fruit or fruit bread

KEEP IT FUN: Pinwheel Sandwiches! When my kids went to high school and both we parents were working I did a deal. I would make sure there were always ingredients for packed lunch but the kids had to make what they wanted from what was available. They made wraps, filled brown rolls, made samosas and filled pita breads. Now and then we cooked a bacon tart or made humus. They even took to my favourite sandwich: chopped date, cheddar, watercress and banana. But not often! BLT, tuna, egg and cream cheese, avocado and bacon or even cold cooked bangers were more common. Carrot sticks, cherry tomatoes, cucumber sticks, radishes, easy peeler satsumas, small apples, grapes or a banana were included to give fresh veg and fibre. My lot would never eat celery, but that is a family story too far… Most schools now require you to avoid peanut butter sandwiches or any nut snacks for the sake of children with allergies. For primary school kids keep it interesting – for variety, use mini wraps, plain bagels, cut bread different shapes, use one slice white and one slice wholemeal to wean them off white bread. Cold pasta salads are ideal – make a little extra of your rice or pasta evening meal to use for the lunchboxes the next day - remember to put in a plastic spoon. Thread small chunks of fruit and veg on skewers. And the more you can get them involved, helping and choosing, the more likely they are to eat it - even if that means some odd combinations of sandwich fillings! It’s still better than processed packaged snacks. For the “side dish” treat, replace crisps or chocolate bars with a little homebaking if you can, or something like fruit loaf, plain popcorn, a small tub of fruit in juice, plain yoghurt with fruit on the side. The NHS has an app called “Be Food Smart” which allows you to simply scan bar codes on

STREET FOOD: Spanish Omelette food packaging and show you how much sugar, fat and salt is in it. Expressed in sugar lumps, it’s sometimes sobering to see just how much sugar is in something. Fruit drinks and muesli bars and other seemingly good food you might use for lunch boxes are stuffed with sugar. www.nhs.uk/change4life-beta/be-food-smart Street food from all over the world can inspire you with new ideas when lunch is in a rut. Easy to eat with fingers is the only criteria. Skewers of fruit or meat, dips made from beans, pakora, filo pies, sushi, roulades or Spanish omelette can be great lunch box food.

SPANISH OMELETTE METHOD: Sweat the onions till golden in the oil. Add the raw sliced potatoes, turn over and mix well with the onions. Cover the pan with a lid and cook on medium heat checking and turning over every 5 minutes till the potatoes are cooked. Add any of the variations you fancy at this point. Cook for 2-3 minutes covered and then add the eggs. Muddle them in all over the pan and cook , covered, till the egg is set. About 5 more minutes. Extra variations: Bacon cubes, sliced chorizo or other sausage or salami, grated hard cheese, spinach, peas, salmon mis-shapes, smoked mackerel, small pieces of cooked chicken breast or leftovers from a roast bird. Perfect sliced cold for the lunch box! The monthly recipe and food notes are contributed by Anne Pinkerton. Anne is a local cook who believes that everybody can enjoy seasonal food and take pleasure in preparing meals for their friends and family. THE DELL DIRECTORY | 41
