T
here are plans afoot to turn the outbuilding in Spylaw park (the one sporting the mural done by Firhill High School students last year) into a neighbourhood and visitor centre. The plans are in the very early stages and there is a Tea in the Park event on 5th May in Spylaw Park so you can learn about it and input your thoughts. I caught up with Lorraine O’Shea who is involved in the project, see the article on p 9 for more details and there is an email address there for contacting the project if you miss the event. It’s the countdown to summer so inevitably the magazine has a lot of garden and outdoors pages this month, and even McNaughton Physiogrange’s health column is about preventing and dealing with gardening-related pain. All our other usual columns are here. Once again, thanks for reading the Dell Directory and supporting local businesses and organisations.

GARDENING
MAKE A DATE FOR
Gardening Scotland 2018
Summer is just around the corner so now’s the time to embrace your outdoor space by putting a date in your diary for Gardening Scotland 2018.
The national festival of plants and flowers has everything you need to transform your garden and it’s also a great day out for everyone, from novice gardeners to expert growers and families in search of outdoor fun. This year’s show takes place from Friday, 1 June until Sunday, 3 June and for three days the Royal Highland Centre Edinburgh will be transformed into the biggest plant sale in Scotland, with a country fair atmosphere, crafts, live music, show gardens, a lively cookery theatre, expert advice for gardeners and lots, lots more. Green-fingered gardeners and complete beginners are equally welcome and there will be something for every plot amongst the glorious shrubs, roses, alpines, bulbs and perennials that will be on sale.
Outside in the show ground, exhibitors will be selling every kind of gardening tool and accessory and top designers will be showcasing the latest trends in garden design, from contemporary outdoor rooms to wild places for tiny spaces, with ideas on how to turn the average back garden into a haven for butterflies and bees. Or turn yours into a space for relaxation with stylish furniture, sun houses and everything you need to create a stylish outdoor room.
This year at Gardening Scotland The Secret Herb Garden will be creating The Secret Gin Garden, where they will be growing the plants used to flavour their unique colourchanging spirits. Sample the delicate flavours of Apothecary Rose, Lavender & Echinacea and Chamomile & Cornflower made from

HEALTH
Gardens
should be a joy, not a pain
Spring and summer are such wonderful seasons – times of growth and renewal. The plants and flowers in our gardens burst into life in a whole host of colours, chasing winter away. Spring crocuses, daffodils, and tulips are followed by a range of summer flowers to brighten up our lives. Gardens are a source of such beauty and joy but they can also be a source of much pain. Statistics compiled by the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) tell us that about 300,000 people are seriously enough hurt in their gardens each year to need hospital treatment. Of these, 87,000 are injured while carrying out gardening tasks. As Physiotherapists, we also see an increase in garden related injuries in the spring and summer, particularly affecting the back, shoulders or knees. So what are the risks and how can we avoid them? The most common accident in the garden is a fall affecting gardeners and visitors alike. Common sense can help prevent these incidents. Flower pots, plant tubs, hoses and other trip hazards can be identified and then made safer with a little thought and planning. Flower pots can be a particular problem resulting in 5,300 people needing hospital treatment after either falling over them or injuring themselves lifting them. Often pots and tubs are heavier than we think. If you have to lift or move them, make sure you can do so safely. Plan your lift – check there are no obstacles in the way. Face the 20 | THE DELL
direction the load is to be carried to avoid unnecessary twisting. Digging, raking and weeding are all repetitive tasks and as such will repeatedly strain the same part of the body – muscle, tendon or ligament. It is sensible to take breaks or change task regularly to avoid injury. For example, mix weeding with pruning so you can vary between kneeling and standing. Know your limitations and pace yourself to get the job done sensibly. It may be worth investing in a smaller spade to lighten the load each time you have to dig or plan to do tasks over several days rather than working when tired. Knees can become swollen with prolonged kneeling to weed as the unusual pressure on the Patella Bursa causes it to become irritated and fill with fluid. When weeding or planting try a knee pad, or old cushion, to help protect your knees. Gardens are to be enjoyed. The famous French painter, Claude Monet, summed it up well saying “My garden is my most beautiful masterpiece”. We hope that you will enjoy your garden and avoid any painful injuries while there. HEALTH
To befriend our inner world is an exciting journey and, although it requires courage and honesty with ourselves, it surely makes sense to get into the ‘driving seat’ of our lives? During the first seven years of life everything we experience is directly downloaded into our subconscious mind. Our little, susceptible brains record all that we’re told and those messages that we hear most frequently are received as a form of ‘hypnosis’. Although our conscious mind is creative, with adult-type wishes and understanding, when we go into a ‘thinking mode’ we disconnect from direct experience of the current moment. We shift instead into connection with our ‘database’ of all those old downloaded programmes.
In other words, considering that 95% of the day we’re thinking, at those times our behaviour is by default controlled by old messages. So we only have 5% of our day when our behaviours may be in line with our creative wishes and dreams. There are various ways to change outdated, unhelpful ‘programmes’. But this research suggests it’s even more important to be vigilant about the 95% of the day when we’re lost in thought. Let’s pause occasionally, take a slow and conscious breath, and return to this moment as wholly as possible ... This column is contributed by Rosanna Veitch. “I have worked as a counsellor for 30 years, I see clients of all ages and with all forms of emotional distress in my peaceful therapy room at my home. Please feel free to call for a chat. Everyone is welcome, and I'm happy to adjust my fee if money is tight.” T: 0131 449 2580 W: www.effectivecounsellingedinburgh.com

What to expect from a complimentary hearing assessment at The Edinburgh Hearing Practice First and foremost, we will listen to you. Hearing loss is personal and we take the time to listen to your experience. We recommend that you bring someone with you as they can often provide useful information and support. Our hearing assessments usually take about 90 minutes. Most hearing centres will measure the quietest sounds that you can hear and based on this will make a recommendation. Although this type of hearing test provides useful information, by no means does it provide a full picture, we hear with our ears but it is our brain that understands speech! With this in mind, we have designed our test protocol to ensure that we measure your exact individual issues. We have the latest technology and can show you images of your ears on a screen. If your ears are blocked with wax your hearing test will not be accurate. You’re in safe hands at the Edinburgh Hearing Practice as we can perform “Professional ear wax removal”. We take you through a thorough hearing evaluation using the very latest audiometric equipment to record the quietest sounds that you can hear, but also importantly, the way that your brain is able to understand the signal from your ears. This involves testing your speech recognition in both quiet and in the presence of the dreaded background noise. Where appropriate, we perform tympanometry to check how the middle ear is working (this is a really simple comfortable test, and is nothing to be nervous about). At each stage, we will explain the results really thoroughly to you and make sure that everything is completely clear. Occasionally we may feel that onward referral is required – this is unusual, but you can trust us to always do the right thing. If hearing aids would help, we will discuss all the different solutions that are available to you based on your hearing loss, lifestyle, cosmetic preference and ease of use. All the results and recommendation are given to you in a report. If appropriate we can make a recommendation on next steps, to help you continue on your journey to better hearing.
Our care plans are bespoke and suited around your individual needs and preferences. All our hearings aids are available to trial for 30 days at no cost. We believe that the proof is in the pudding! We are a family owned and run business and we love what we do. Trust your hearing to us!

FEATURE
COME WHAT MAY ( ... the 4
th
be with you!)
It’s been a funny old year so far, hasn’t it? It was an almost literal “White Rabbits, White Rabbits, White Rabbits” start to April with snow falling (again!) hot on the heels of the Easter bunny.
Is it tempting fate to dare suggest that May should be warmer and snow free? Indeed, I can remember snow in May in my lifetime – the day my Mum died, in fact – in May 1993. I lived in Penicuik at the time and when I returned home with my husband later that day we had a small flurry of snow which seemed oddly appropriate to me at the time since the world as I knew it seemed to have gone mad.
Traditionally though, May is usually a good month weather-wise. The temperatures are rising, the days still stretching out to their maximum length and the May flowers appearing, following the March winds and April showers (or in this case, the March storms and April snow!). I remember the mixed blessing of May as both a high school pupil and university student – the warmer days, the extra Monday holidays and the feeling that summer was on the horizon all slightly marred by the onslaught of exams. Drawing up endless revision timetables in my bedroom whilst gazing wistfully out at the sunshine then convincing myself that I could study just as effectively outside but soon finding after settling in the sunshine that my books made a better pillow or eye shade than actual reading material and so drifting off into a pleasant daydream only to have to re-work the revision timetable when I came to a few hours later…
26 | THE DELL
Despite being aware of the custom for many years I’ve never yet made it to the top of Arthur’s Seat to wash my face in the early morning dew on the 1st May (believed to bring eternal beauty!). Nor have I yet succumbed to celebrating “Star Wars Day” on the 4th May (May the 4th be with you!) but I do wish I’d seen Edinburgh Zoo’s Imperial March of the Penguins a few years ago when staff at the Zoo decided to play The Imperial March to accompany the penguins on their daily waddle. Seeing this live would have made my day but it can still be viewed online if you search YouTube for “Star Wars Day Penguin Parade” – I certainly hope watching the penguins toddle along to Darth Vader’s theme brings as big a smile to your faces as it does mine! Whatever the weather throws at us and whatever traditions we decide to observe here’s hoping we can enjoy the extra Monday holidays and get out and embrace our beautiful surroundings whether it be walks in the Dell, studying in the garden or picnicking in Spylaw Park. Here’s to a very merry month of May! This article was contributed by Lynn Arnott. Lynn has lived in Colinton for the past 9 years with her husband and 2 kids.

HOME IMPROVEMENT
A large mirror, a pale, neutral colour palette and raising fittings off the floor promote a feeling of spaciousness
make the most of a
Small Bathroom
Even a tiny bathroom can function brilliantly and look gorgeous.
1
Choose subtle colours: A neutral colour palette opens up a small bathroom, giving it a sophisticated, contemporary feel. If you want colour, watery blues and greens help the room feel light and airy. To avoid a clinical feel, add texture – timber shelving, wicker baskets, waffle towels and linen blinds.
2
Fit excellent storage: Slimline cupboards take less floor space; false walls conceal pipework and can have inset cupboards or niches; look for anywhere that storage could be added, from above the door to below the basin, even behind the bath panel or a rack inside the shower.
3
Make the most of natural light: Get the most light possible through the windows – keep sills clear and don’t cover any of the glass with window treatments. Bounce light around the room using mirrors and glossy tiles.
4
Select fittings wisely: Bathroom fittings designed for small bathrooms don’t compromise on looks or function, including shortprojection WCs, shower-baths, thin-but-tall towel rails and ultra-slim basins. For awkward spaces, consider corner showers, basins and WCs. Wall or mixer taps create room on a small basin, and if space is tight add a wall-mounted soap dispenser.
5
Raise it off the floor: A bathroom can appear more spacious by the installation of wallmounted pieces to show off the floor space beneath.
6
Lighting is vital: Lighting should meet all requirements, from putting on make-up to reading in the bath. Choose recessed spotlights, or neat directional lights mounted on a slender track. Fit LED strips beneath wall units as a hidden light source, with a baffle board in front to avoid glare, and include an illuminated mirror. Note that fittings will need to be IP-rated for safety (check with your electrician). @KonectMagazines
Make the most of natural light
7
Two-in-one is best: Choose multifunction, such as towel radiators, storage seats, mirrored cabinets and basins with cupboards beneath. Consider underfloor heating: If you are
8 renovating, installing underfloor heating is
relatively easy and inexpensive, and saves the space taken up by a radiator. Employ visual tricks: Large-format tiles (wall or floor) can work better in compact bathrooms than smaller tiles, and with fewer grout lines, large tiles look sleek and are easier to maintain.
10
Assess your window options: Curtains contrast the hard surfaces, but avoid anything too flouncy. Floaty sheers in simple gathers work well, such as a flat panel of muslin threaded onto a pole or wire across the bottom half of the window. Alternatively, try a neat Roman or roller blind, waterproof louvre shutters or simple frosted glass. THE DELL | 33

Independent personal financial planning
Let’s talk saving for a great retirement Are you saving enough for your retirement? Interest rates are still low and there have been major changes to pension legislation, particularly schemes from former nationalised industries. If you’re worried about your future financial security, let’s talk. We’ll ask a lot of questions about your financial objectives and any concerns about the value of your pension or the provision of long term care. And we’ll listen. You won’t be pressurised or rushed into making any financial decisions. We’ve been delivering independent financial advice in Edinburgh and the Lothians for more than 30 years. You can easily call in to see us in South Edinburgh and we’ll take the time to get to know you properly.
Why not ask for a no-obligation, initial meeting at our expense. It’s free. No pressure.
0131 440 8250 www.torphin.co.uk Please remember that the value of investments can fall as well as rise and you may not get back your original investment.
