PAM WARDELL: Author of A Very Private Affair – a Soviet Dissident’s “English Wife”

As part of the Pentlands Book Festival, four local authors will speak about their work at Colinton Library on 30th November. Come along and meet Pam and Lesley, as well as Dorothy Baird and Geoff Akers.

CAVALIER CHRONICLES: Lesley Fraser describes her Cavalier King Charles Spaniel’s first three years as a pet and show dog

PENTLANDS BOOK FESTIVAL: Come along on 30th November and meet Pam and Lesley, as well as Dorothy Baird and Geoff Akers

If you enjoy the television programme “Who Do You Think You Are?”, you will want to hear author Pam Wardell tell how she, through a series of coincidences, unearthed the story of the love affair between her enigmatic aunt Speranza and a prominent Soviet writer, Boris Pilniak. Pam’s book A Very Private Affair – a Soviet Dissident’s “English Wife” was published in September 2016. It was a labour of love for the retired BBC producer, who had happened upon a stack of silk ribbon-bound letters, written in Russian, while clearing her deceased aunt’s flat. The beautiful book, full of family photographs and memorabilia, tells the story of the love between Speranza (affectionately known as Pica) and Boris. It also sheds light on what it was like for Russians like Pam’s mother and her siblings who fled their country after the Revolution. “It is a memoir for our family,” says Pam, “but will also be of interest to those studying Russian history. Its release is timely, because this year is the centenary of the Revolution.” It was 1995 when the Colinton-based author found the letters, but they remained in her loft until after she retired from the BBC in

8 | THE DELL DIRECTORY

2001. But at that point she formed her own company, doing drama workshops for children – she had been a drama teacher before became a producer. “So it wasn’t until 2013 that the real work on the book started,” she says. “I made a pact with myself that I would complete it before I turned 70, and I just made it!” Pam believes her aunt’s story is one that “had to be told”. And yet finding a publisher who would produce the book, and in a format she was happy with, was very difficult. In the end she set up her own publishing company, Howard Press (www. howardpress.net - See below). On 30 November Pam will be telling the fascinating story of the secret love affair. She will also describe how she found an appropriate format for her “hybrid” book, and established her own publishing company. “My talented graphic designer helped me put together a memoir that is beautifully illustrated with the materials of that time,” she says. Pam learned that the more you find out about your past, the more it impacts on your understanding of the past – and the more it impacts on your future. “Researching your family history fires your imagination!” she comments. “The journey that led to this book has been a great pleasure for me. “I hope others will be inspired to have a go. You never know what you will find in your loft.” Lesley Fraser will talk about her book, Cavalier Chronicles, which describes her Cavalier King Charles Spaniel’s first three years as a pet and show dog. “Actually it was written by Rufus,” she says, “and translated into human by me.” Rufus did quite well as a show dog, eventually making it all the way to the big one, Crufts, where he won a prize. He is nine now and a bit deaf, so he has retired. However, his brother Reuben is still showing. “It’s good fun,” says Lesley, “and a very sociable activity.” The author first spoke at Colinton Library three years ago, when the book was published. She was accompanied by five of her dogs on that occasion, and will probably have a couple with her in November. After all, it’s a dog’s story.

As a family planning nurse, Lesley was asked to write a number of articles. Later she worked for Radio Forth and eventually was teamed with Andy, responding to calls on the phone-in programme, the Open Line. She worked with the station for 19 years, and ran their charity, raising funds for children with special needs. “This is a cause close to my heart,” she comments, “because my sister had cerebral palsy and died very suddenly when she was just 29.” Lesley has been an agony aunt, a TV presenter and a ski instructor. For awhile she ran her own business, supplying handmade wedding and ball gowns. “I take any opportunity that comes along,” she says. “If it doesn’t work out, what is the worst that can happen? I can always do something else. I just go for it.” Currently she works as an Independent Celebrant, writing and delivering life ceremonies. These can be anything from baby naming events to funerals. “I do a lot of writing for this job,” she says. “And my hobby, writing, encourages me in my job. So it’s the perfect arrangement.” Join Lesley and the others at the library from 10.00am to 1.00pm, and hear more about Rufus, a dog’s life, the sequel to Cavalier Chronicles and her soon-to-be-released novel, Changing Lives! Go to www.pentlandsbookfestival.org for the complete festival programme. This feature is contributed by Suzanne Green. Suzanne, a freelance writer/editor and writes regularly for Konect. She is married to Andy and they have two adult daughters.

Lesley’s own story is no less interesting than that of Rufus! She has obviously always had a gift for writing, however it was never encouraged when she was a child: her father advised her to “leave the writing to the boys”. So she trained as a nurse. THE DELL DIRECTORY | 9

VILLAGE PEOPLE

Triathlon , anyone?

Colinton resident Linda McLean coaches people to compete in triathlons. A Celtic fan, she enjoys mountain biking and swimming in Threipmuir Reservoir. Linda and her husband Alister met when both were on hockey teams. When Glasgow-born Linda McLean came to Edinburgh to study sports at Telford College (now Edinburgh College), she could not swim. Eighteen months later, she had learned to swim, been a lifeguard and was working as a swimming instructor! Today Linda coaches men, women and children to compete in triathlons and Ironman events. “The Ironman is a triathlon (swim, bike, run), but for stupid distances,” Linda explains. “It’s a 3.8 kilometre swim, so if you jumped into the water at the Forth Road Bridge, you would need to swim out and back four times. Then you would jump on your bike and ride 112 miles. And finally, you would get off your bike in Aberdeen and run a marathon.” Triathlon was a new sport 20 years ago. One of Linda’s friends, noting that she was a swimming instructor who cycled to work, suggested she might want to get involved. She has been coaching for 18 years, both for Edinburgh University and in her own business, and she took part in races herself until an injury she incurred five years ago made this impossible. Coaching for triathlons means training people in swimming, cycling and running, but there is also a fourth discipline: transitions. This has to do with how quickly you can get out of your wetsuit and onto a bike, and how fast you can get off your bike and into a pair of running shoes. Linda has seen the interest in triathlon explode since Britain hosted the Olympics in 2012. “It’s

amazing,” she says. “Now when a race opens it fills up by the end of the day, and then there’s a waiting list.” This year saw Scotland’s first half Ironman, held in Edinburgh in July. Children as young as eight can compete, although distances are much shorter. “They can finish in about 15 minutes,” says Linda, “because usually they are pretty quick. It’s a great sport for children, who tend to be good at one or two of the disciplines and not so good at the other. So they are not put off so quickly.” Older people do triathlons too – even people in their 70s and 80s. Linda coached Colinton resident Penny Rother for the European championships. Recently the retired doctor competed in Rotterdam, where she came second in her age group. “It’s a good sport to be in,” says Linda. “because there are all sorts of distances you can do. So, if you’re a novice, you can do a really short race. If you get injured and can’t run, you can still swim and cycle.” Linda has two older brothers, and her parents thought they had escaped becoming a football household when neither of the boys showed much interest. “But then I came along,” says Linda, “and I was always into football and sport.” The Village People column is contributed by Suzanne Green. Suzannne is a local freelance writer/editor and writes regularly for Konect. She is married to Andy and they have two adult daughters. THE DELL DIRECTORY | 17

HEALTH & BEAUTY

One of the most troubling things about being stressed is believing we can't control how we feel. So understanding how stress works can really help. In our brain we have a basic, but effective, 'guard' - called the amygdala. As we evolved on the African plains over hundreds of thousands of years, our guard kept us safe from wild beasts, and it continues in just the same way today. As soon as it recognises a threat it sends stress hormones into our body. Our heart rate increases, we breathe more quickly, our muscles get filled with blood- so that we're ready to fight or run for our life.

Crucially, the guard can't tell the difference between a real 'threat' and something that's just inside our head. So whenever we worry we end up feeling alarmed, with our mind-body system unbalanced. And then we worry about how awful we feel too … Let's stop doing this to ourselves. Let's be hopeful, and kindly to ourselves ... with a new plan to take care of our inner world. After all, if we don't, who's going to? This column is contributed by Rosanna Veitch. “I have worked as a counsellor for 30 years, I see clients of all ages and with all forms of emotional distress in my peaceful therapy room at my home. Please feel free to call for a chat. Everyone is welcome, and I'm happy to adjust my fee if money is tight.” T: 0131 449 2580 W: www.effectivecounsellingedinburgh.com 28 | THE DELL DIRECTORY

KO PR NE O CT O F

Now that's all fine if we're facing real danger ... but modern life poses very different 'threats' for most of us. Thankfully, our 'thinking brain' or neocortex has developed to handle complex challenges. But it can't work so well when our guard is pumping stress hormones into our system which we don't actually need and have no way of dispelling.

WALK

away at Hermitage of Braid & Blackford Hill PRETTY DOOCOT: Located behind a lovely garden

How lucky we are living where we do – not only are we blessed with stunning scenery all around, we also live on the outskirts of a city populated with fabulous parks and hills. It’s easy to dismiss going into the city to walk but you would be missing some great panoramic vistas. A busy day rushing into the city to run errands, drop children off, fail to find some street parking, resort to an extortionate car park and manage to take 20 minutes to actually find a space…equals the need for a brisk yomp over the hills on the way home. So one reluctant daughter and I parked up on Braid Road (Hermitage Drive end), headed into the wooded glen of the Hermitage of Braid Nature Reserve and followed one of the many paths through the woods and over the hill.

HERMITAGE HOUSE: A splendid piece of 18th century architecture

STUNNING VIEWS: Edinburgh is famously built upon seven hills

Turn left by the map board to follow the narrower path that heads through the trees along the left side of the Braid Burn. Behind a lovely garden there’s a pretty doocot uphill on the left; thought to date to the late 17th century, it has 1,965 nest-holes. The path eventually re-joins the main route on the other side of the burn. Next comes Hermitage House - a splendid piece of eighteenth century architecture, once the home of Charles Gordon of Cluny. These days it is a visitor centre for the glen. Walk on down past the house, and immediately after the house the path forks. We took the left branch that climbs up amongst the trees. Another right turn followed immediately by a left via a small plank bridge and style and you reach an open grassy area. Head directly across towards the mast on Blackford Hill where you come to a gap in a stone wall. Through the gap turn left and follow the path, then fork right onto a narrower path which heads up and cuts around the flank of the hill with a steep unprotected drop on the left. Now you really get a view – Edinburgh Castle, the Old Town, Arthur’s Seat and Salisbury Crags.

34 | THE DELL DIRECTORY

When you come to a grassy patch on the right hand side, cross it to take the grassy path that climbs more steeply towards the Royal Observatory complex. Bear right and you reach the trig point on the summit. Blackford is one of the seven hills on which Edinburgh is famously built and the views are stunning. We enjoyed the quintessential Scottish weather of four seasons in one day (literally) so we didn’t linger to enjoy the view too much as we were ‘enjoying’ some horizontal rain at that particular moment! Heading back towards the Observatory, turn right before you reach it and aim towards the left edge of the prominent Corbie’s Crag - a miniature crag and tail. Behind the crag, the path then heads back down through the gorse and bears right into the woods. There are so many different paths you can take here that there is plenty of variety for subsequent wanderings. However we turned right to follow the main path upstream back to the Hermitage of Braid to return to the car on Braid Road. There is a coffee shop, the Lodge Coffee House, at the park entrance where you could reward yourself with a pit stop. (I haven’t tried it so can’t vouch for the coffee there!) A great way to blow away the cobwebs after a busy day and get the mind back on track.

Walk Information

Distance: 4.25km Time: 1 hour 15 minutes (Unless you dawdle to look at the views!) Ascent: 137m Terrain: Woodland and grassy paths – can be muddy! The walk feature is written by Karen Murray. Chocolate and orange are perfect flavour partners and these lovely individual puddings taste delicious served warm with custard or cream. Ingredients: 3 small clementines or satsumas, thinly sliced 175g unsalted butter, softened, plus extra for greasing 175g caster sugar 3 large eggs, beaten 125g self-raising flour 50g cocoa powder, sifted 1 tbsp fresh orange juice 2 tsp orange zest Custard or cream, to serve

Serves 6 Ready in 1 hour 30 mins Tip: You can cook the puddings a few hours before serving then simply re-heat in the microwave. Turn out onto a microwave plate and reheat three at a time on High for 30-45 seconds. 42 | THE DELL DIRECTORY

1

Preheat the oven to 180°C, fan 160°C, gas mark 4. Butter and line the bases of 6 x 175ml metal pudding basins with circles of baking parchment. Place a slice of clementine or satsuma in the base of each basin and press 2-3 slices around the sides.

2

Put the butter and sugar in a bowl and, using an electric mixer, beat until pale and fluffy. Gradually beat in the eggs then sift over the flour and cocoa powder and fold into the creamed mixture with the orange juice and zest.

3

Divide the mixture between the pudding basins and cover each with a square of pleated, buttered foil, scrunching it tightly around the sides of each basin. Transfer to a roasting tin and pour in enough boiling water from a kettle to reach halfway up the sides of the basins.

4

Bake for 1 hour, until the puddings have risen and are firm to the touch, and a skewer inserted through the foil of one of the puddings comes out clean. Turn out and serve with custard or cream.
