COMMUNITY

Pubs, restaurants and takeaways keep local residents and visitors fed and watered.

To many people, Juniper Green is just a label on a stretch of road you pass through along the A70. But there is a lot more to Juniper Green than meets the eye. We take a quick look behind the street front…

There are many independent businesses throughout the local community.

Literally behind the shop fronts of course on one side is the Water of Leith walkway, which makes Juniper Green a great destination or stoppingoff point for walkers and cyclists. Three pubs, Al Borgo Restaurant, and two takeaways – Pentland Fry and the Lucky House Chinese takeaway - keep visitors and residents alike fed and watered. The village can expect more visitors in the future - it has been in the news recently as new research shows that Baberton Golf Club was the site of an historic meeting between poets Wilfred Owen, Siegfried Sassoon and Robert Graves – we’ll be covering that in more detail in an upcoming issue of Konect, but it really puts Juniper Green on the literary map. On Friday 13th October there will be a talk at 7.30pm at Baberton Golf Club, by Neil McLennan, entitled “The War Poets Meeting Holed (and Told) in One” (the first event in this year’s Pentlands Book Festival). Neil uncovered the fact that the poets first met at Baberton Golf Club on 13th October 1917. He will talk about that meeting exactly a century before, the poetry that flowed from the encounter and some tales of golf between Baberton Golf Club and Craiglockhart War Hospital (now Napier University). See www.napier.ac.uk/Wilfred-Owen-100 for details. Local independent main street businesses include hairdressers, beauty salons, dentist, physiotherapist and an optician, and have recently been joined by Flowers by Porteous and Lillie. Opened three months ago by Anna from Currie, the shop is all about parties

- besides flowers for all occasions, they sell cards, helium balloons, favours (for weddings, babies) as well as a range of gifts, candles and kitchenalia. Anna was taught by her grandmother who was a florist and milliner, and after years working as a business manager Anna decided to make her hobby into a business. There will be open evenings coming up in the run up to Christmas and they will be selling real Christmas trees and wreaths. Anna also works closely with Porteous Funeral Directors. For food, the fishmongers have been faithfully serving the village for a long time, and the new deli, Molly’s Delicatessen, is a welcome addition to ensure continuity of the local food shopping options. They supply cheeses from Mellis Cheesemongers, bread from local suppliers, meat, and fresh fruit and veg. They also have an espresso machine selling the same coffee as in Molly’s Cafe. The cafe has been a great asset to the village since opening a couple of years ago; besides the fantastic range of baking that Sarah does herself (when I was in for coffee recently I think there were at least 10 baking options on the counter...) they do lunches every day and evening dining Thursday to Saturday. The annual Pentlands Book Festival is coming up in November, with events this year taking place from Colinton to Balerno. More information at www.pentlandsbookfestival.org and in the October issue of the Dell Directory. Juniper Green is one of two communities in the Edinburgh area taking part in the Scottish Government’s Resilient Community Project. The aim is to help communities become more self-reliant and to identify and protect vulnerable people. As a start, defibrillators are now located at the parish church, Baberton Golf Club, Juniper Green Bowling Club, the primary school and village hall. Juniper Green Community Council is also looking at winter-readiness: snow-clearing kit will be held in the village hall and training arranged before winter; Baberton Avenue to be designated as a priority street for gritting; first aid training to be considered; and possibly enlisting volunteers who can offer help in emergencies, for example who have chainsaws or 4-wheel-drive vehicles, or who can offer transport to those who cannot drive themselves, or can go shopping for someone. The loss of the bank and its ATM is of major concern to all the village communities of the Upper Water of Leith, from Colinton to Balerno. A Steering Group of residents from Colinton,

Juniper Green on Broadway, New York Catherine Chisholm Cushing (1854-1952) was a playwright born in Ohio, USA, and there is no record of her having traveled to Scotland. So why does Juniper Green feature heavily in her musical comedy “Lassie”, appearing in New York Theatres in 1920? According to the blurb at the time “the heroine, having been brought up obscurely by poor people in Juniper Green, on the banks of the River Leith, is sent for by those who had abandoned her as a baby and taken up to London town...” We won’t spoil all the plot twists, but you can safely assume that after discovering her dashing love is her half brother, she returns broken-hearted to Juniper Green - only to discover he isn’t, after all. Acts I and III are set in Juniper Green. Juniper Green and Currie are working with Juniper Green Community Council to pursue a plan to bring community banking to the area. It has successfully bid to the Scottish Land Fund for funding to research the options for the continuation of a face-to-face financial services. They are looking at acquire the land on the abandoned toilet site from the city council to potentially build what could be a community hub on the site; and determine if there is a business case for sustaining this space for community use. “It’s important for people to support the facilities there are in the local area,” says Cliff Beevers, chair of the JGCC.“I know it’s a cliché, but it’s an accurate one … ‘use them or lose them.’”

VILLAGE PEOPLE

Founder of Puppet State Theatre Company, Colinton’s Richard Medrington is perhaps best known for his multi-award-winning show The Man Who Planted Trees. He and his wife Elspeth, stage manager for the company, have been touring worldwide with this phenomenally successful production since 2006. From Southport, near Liverpool, Richard Medrington moved to Edinburgh in 1991. “I thought Edinburgh was the nicest place I’d ever seen,” he says. “Where else would you want to live?” He was originally drawn to the capital by its rich arts culture. In 2003 at a “Poetry Slam”, a live-performance poetry competition, poet Elspeth Murray was a judge and Richard was the winner. That was the start of their romance, and they married in 2005. Richard started doing puppetry in 1984, and has continued with it fairly consistently ever since. “I was always interested in drama and writing plays,” he explains, “and eventually this sort of morphed into puppetry – initially as a one-man outfit.” When Puppet State Theatre Company first performed The Man Who Planted Trees, Richard never imagined it would still be running 11 years later. But the popular show has been embraced by audiences across the world. It has been performed by the original cast (Richard and American puppeteer, Rick Conte) over 1,550 times – from Australia, New Zealand, US and Canada, to Malaysia, Germany and beyond. One fan told Richard she had seen it 17 times! “Because the story, written in 1953, is about reforestation, it’s now so much more relevant than it was then,” says Richard. “Its serious nature is balanced out by the humour of the dog character in the show. It appeals to both young and old. We believe in proper family theatre – not dumbed down for children, and enjoyable to all ages.” Richard’s more recent show, Leaf by Niggle

premièred at Edinburgh’s Festival Theatre last year and just finished a run at the Fringe Festival. It was adapted from a story by J.R.R. Tolkien (author of The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings). “It’s a great story,” says Richard, “but when I originally approached the Tolkien Society to see if they would grant permission for the adaptation, I was turned down. Twenty years later I tried again, and they agreed! We’re delighted to be doing one performance in Colinton on 28 October, with all proceeds going to Christian Aid.” Richard and Elspeth have lately spent about five months a year touring. “In 2018 we will have a bit of a break,” says Richard. “It will be nice to be home for awhile. My next project will be our garden. “Not that I’m a gardener yet … but it’s that time in life.” Visit www.puppetstate.com See Leaf by Niggle at 7:30pm on Saturday, 28th October at Dreghorn Loan Hall, 22 Dreghorn Loan, Colinton EH13 0DE. Tickets available from Colinton Library, or phone 0131 455 8650 / 0131 441 1184. Richard’s novel, Sea Above, Sky Below, was released 6th Aug. Go to www.richardmedrington.com for details. The Village People column is contributed by Suzanne Green. Suzannne is a local freelance writer/editor and writes regularly for Konect. She is married to Andy and they have two adult daughters. The point of power to choose how to be in our lives rests in the Observing Self - that part which can notice what’s happening and make a conscious choice, rather than the automatic, repetitious stuff that makes up over 90% of living. Just like the learning of any pattern or habit, we can strengthen this ‘attention muscle’ through repetitive practice. Mindfulness - the art of non-judgmental ‘noticing’ is supported by scientific findings which even describe changes to the brain’s structure increasing our capacity for empathy, compassion, patience and self-control. We may agree that life feels much nicer and more manageable when we’re calm. So, perhaps we can gift ourselves with a few moments, here and there through our day, when we gently breathe out slowly and just notice what’s around and within. We don’t actually need to always comment or judge or control - sometimes it’s a relief just to notice ... Perhaps you can see your mind like a river - each thought a drop of water - one after another, making a stream. Perhaps you can sit on the river bank, just noticing ... and come home to yourself. And if the flow of the stream seems stuck or the din of its passing is just too loud, please consider calling for a chat 0131 449 2580.

This column is contributed by Rosanna Veitch. “I have worked as a counsellor for 30 years and am delighted to have been asked to write a little column here. I see clients of all ages and with all forms of emotional distress in my peaceful therapy room at my home. Please feel free to call for a chat. Everyone is welcome, and I'm happy to adjust my fee if money is tight.” T: 0131 449 2580 W: www.effectivecounsellingedinburgh.com THE DELL DIRECTORY | 27

WALK

DIFFERENCE KAREN MURRAY SPICES UP A HILL WALK WITH SOME TUBING FUN! They say women are good at multi-tasking – I am actually not entirely convinced about that but I do like to try so when a friend suggested a walk in the hills ending in some tubing fun, I was up for the challenge. The venue is the Hillend Snowports Centre on the outskirts of Edinburgh and a place I have begun several walks from in the past, but it is also home to not only the dry ski slope for skiing but a relatively new ‘tubing’ area. So this was our destination. We parked at the bottom car park just off the A701 and headed off up the path clearly marked going up diagonally from the car park. There is an information board showing a variety of different routes but the Capital View circuit it quite a good option, which means turning left before you reach a set of steps. The path is steep and quite narrow but not too difficult for most to manage. You will find a lot of dog walkers in the area so you might need to negotiate a few of those. If you stop every now and then and look back you will very quickly begin to get great views over Edinburgh. You will come to a cross roads of paths where you go straight on following the way markers, passing a mound which is the 38 | THE DELL DIRECTORY

remains of an iron-age fort – of which there are several in ‘these there hills’! A signpost and gate is the next landmark, at which point you could head straight up the hill and do some major hill conquering, but the easier option is to turn right – signed Capital View. You pass above the back the of ski slopes taking in more excellent view over the Firth of Forth. The city is laid out before you and you can see the Bass Rock on a good day as well as the Ochill Hills and beyond. The waymarked route then descends on the other side of the skiing area and eventually ends up at the quaint little hamlet of Swanston. However, we climbed the stile over to the top of the highest ski slope and made our way down the side of the dry ski area to the café and ticket office, where we purchased our tubing ticket. An hour of tubing fun was bought and we headed over to the dedicated area where there are four slides that reminded me a little of a water park abroad – minus the water and the scorching temperatures!

Grab an inner tube (hence the tubing moniker) – larger for bottoms like mine, or mini sized for small people. Take the travellator – a moving pathway that aids your ascent to the top of the slides – and pick the one you fancy. Straight and steep for speed or curvy for more giggles and a chance to end up going backwards. I can vouch for how much fun this is – whatever your age. Just ignore the people there who are wondering where you kids are, or indeed take the kids as a treat for walking up the hill. After a reviving beverage in the café, you can either walk down the road back to the car park, or cross over the bottom of

the ski slopes to pick up the path you walked up. The walking part of this is not very long but it is uphill – so a good work out, followed by fun and exertion at the tubing and a stroll back. All in all a good fun couple of hours. THE VENUE Midlothian Snowsports Centre, Pentland Hills Regional Park, EH10 7DU. Tubing sessions are Friday 1pm-5pm, Saturday and Sunday 10am – 5pm with sessions lasting an hour. The walk feature is written by Karen Murray. Karen lives in West Lothian and is passionate about walking in the great outdoors having been brought up to love walking by her Father (still hillwalking in his 80s).
