Hello neighbours While our villages all have their own distinct village identities, most of us go into Livingston regularly for shops and services. This month marks 50 years since Livingston was officially designated as a new town and the process began of pulling together the existing small villages and building new neighbourhoods into a new cohesive settlement. Over the years a large number of “home grown” charities and community groups have sprung up, and for our feature article this month we have been talking to a couple of them – one relating to people and one relating to the environment, so you can read about them on pages 8 and 9. The Konect walk feature is actually a run this month, contributed by local resident and running enthusiast who is publishing a book of local runs this year, see page 30. It includes passing through Almondell & Calderwood Country Park which is lovely this time of year with

everything just starting to wake up after winter – we snapped some daffodils for the front cover. Congratulations to Victor Smith of East Calder who won the competition prize in the last issue. This month, itsPhotographic, photographers in Livingston, are offering a Studio Photo Shoot with an A4 high gloss print of your choice, so well worth sending in your crossword entry. Have a great Easter break, and thanks for reading the Konect Directory.

Livingston’s 50 – Community Counts
1)
By Yvonne MacMillan
2012
promises to be a glittering year, crammed full of memorable occasions. The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Day falls in June, and hopefully we’re in store for a gold, silver and bronze-filled summer at the London Olympics. But closer to home and first out of the starting blocks, are Livingston’s own celebrations. The town’s golden anniversary takes place on the 17th of April, 50 years to the day since it was officially designated a new town. Five decades ago, in the spring of 1962, that optimistic season of growth and renewal, Livingston Development Corporation (LDC) began the mammoth task of creating Livingston New Town, a new community, and the fourth of Scotland’s post-war towns. An explosion of energy and drive meant it quickly grew from three small, existing villages – Livingston Village, Livingston Station and Bellsquarry, to today’s thriving town (population 55,000). It’s now the seventh largest town or city in Scotland. Construction work began on the hillside above the River Almond and the omens were good - the Beatles were starting out and the Apollo Space Programme was about to take off. The hill teemed and crawled with trundling lorries, cement mixers and diggers criss-crossed the land, like a strange sort of mechanical courtship dance - and the happy result was the first major housing development in the new town, Craigshill. The LDC’s plan expanded the town from east to west and the neighbourhoods of Howden, Ladywell, Knightsridge, Dedridge, Eliburn, Deans, Carmondean, Bankton and Murieston quickly followed. As the community gears up to celebrate, Livingston’s MP, Graeme Morrice, in a late evening Adjournment Debate in the House of Commons recently, highlighted this significant milestone in Livingston’s history. To the sound of Big Ben striking 10 o’clock, he spoke of Livingston’s great
successes and achievements, and paid tribute to some of the many individuals and groups that have contributed to Livingston’s remarkable success story. He felt Livingston’s most valuable asset was “its people,” and a key characteristic of the new town’s population is the diversity of the backgrounds and experience that people have brought to Livingston. Its 50th celebrations “will rightly involve the local community, its schools and voluntary groups.” Livingston has a dedicated army of unsung heroes in voluntary and charitable groups who reach out and connect – get involved and give something back to their community. They help make it tick. A voluntary community group in Dedridge, formed in 2007, the Dedridge Environment Ecology Project (DEEP), has been working tirelessly on improving their local environment. Wilma Shearer and Roley Walton are two of the group’s volunteers. Wilma, 75, is DEEP’s Secretary and Roley, 82 (and proud of it!), is ViceChairperson. Between them they have lived in the area for about 70 years. Looking back to a time before DEEP began their work, Wilma remembers birds nesting amongst dumped trolleys and piles of rubbish in the area. She felt this was a shame because, “I love nature, the birds, trees, flowers.” Wilma, Roley and other local people made a habit of picking up litter (and still do) and the council helped with uplifting bigger items but it wasn’t till DEEP came about that a real difference was made. “I love seeing the results of what we’ve done,” says Wilma.
Images 1) Graham Gilmour of Radio Grapevine 2) Jubilee Pond, Dedridge 3) & 4) DEEP volunteers
Roley, a retired Biology teacher, joined the group at the outset. “We’ve been able to make changes in an area that really needs it,” she says, “I love, LOVE, seeing habitats restored.” The teamwork is something else she enjoys. The wider community gets involved, school children and teachers from 5 local schools muck in and enjoy the fruits of their labours, like Nature Trails and pond dipping. The scouts and the minister have lent a hand too. “We get great help,” says Wilma. The group has transformed the area known as Dedridge Plantation with pond restoration, woodland management and paths widened which means more people can use the wood – mums with buggies and wheelchair users. The volunteers of DEEP now have their sights set on the Dedridge Burn corridor. This project started in October 2011. The aim is to form a wildlife network along the line of the Dedridge Burn into the heart of Livingston and linking with the River Almond. For this to happen the volunteers – sleeves rolled up and trusty wellies on – plan to make a connected series of attractive and biologically diverse areas along the burn, a place for local people, visitors and wildlife to enjoy. Already, they are planning the grand opening in April of the restored Wave Pond, renamed the Jubilee Pond, in honour of Livingston’s 50th and the Queen’s 60th anniversaries. A lucky local school pupil (name will be drawn from a hat), will cut the ribbon. Graham Gilmour, a Test Analyst for Sky, is a volunteer too, this time with Radio Grapevine, West Lothian’s Hospital Broadcasting Service. Radio Grapevine has charitable status and broadcasts to 550 bed St. John’s Hospital in the town. The award-winning station is manned entirely by volunteers (40 of them) and broadcasts 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to the patients and staff of St. John’s. Graham, from Blackridge, presents a show on Thursdays between 5pm – 7pm and is also the radio station’s treasurer. He has been volunteering at the station for 12 years, and says, “I enjoy it so much.” Hospital radio is different, Graham feels, because collecting 3) requests on the wards gives

you contact with your audience. “I like the personal contact, chatting to the patients about music. It’s very rewarding. And a bit self-indulgent at times!” The radio station, granted charitable status in 1991, relies on the support of the generous companies of West Lothian to make it work. The extensive library of over 45, 000 songs carries almost every kind of music that you can name - with the occasional obscure request from time to time! The studio in St. John’s is equipped with CD Players, MiniDisc Players, a turntable and an automated computer play-out system . Look out for Radio Grapevine at Gala Days and Fun Days in the community. Many community events, activities and exhibitions are planned on and around Livingston’s anniversary. Thought for the Month By Jackie Whigham
L
iving in the past blocks our energy and stops us flowing effortlessly with the forward motion of life - especially if we keep re-living bad experiences. Holding onto ‘your story’ keeps you stuck in your history. A history that you cannot bring back or change! Stop playing small in your life by being a victim of your past, and instead become a victor! To do this you have to find a way to accept the situation, let it go and move on. Letting go brings you back into present time. It’s the present moment where your power lies and allows you to create your life anew. When you call your energy back to present time, you’ll find a new zest for your life and it will soar! Your posture will lift and straighten, and your face will look younger, softer and more radiant than ever – why? Because your spirit is shaking off old energy
Lumière
What do you need to let go of to bring your spirit back to life? Do what you need to do to bring closure to the situation then draw a line under it. Now the tricky part! Don’t think or speak about it again or you’ll keep re-living it! Jackie works in Xcite Sports Centre, East Calder as a Beauty Therapist and Life Coach. The Langton Estate Family history column By Maureen McIntyre
A gruesome discovery at Langton
R
esearching your family tree and the area your ancestors lived in can really bring the people and places alive, with many fascinating stories to discover. Whilst researching the Langton Estate in East Calder I discovered a story about a possible ancient burial. The mansion house on the Langton/ Belfield estate in East Calder was demolished around 1849 and the stone and rubble used to build new cottages for farm labourers. In November of that year, as local farm servants were draining a field close to the ruins of the house, they made a gruesome discovery. About 3 ½ feet below the surface of the ground they found a skeleton. They also uncovered some artefacts, buried with the body, including a dagger and blade, some fragments of glazed pottery, a wooden comb and a bodkin of bone. The artefacts and skeleton were donated to the National Museum of Scotland in Chambers Street, Edinburgh, where I made enquiries about the finds. During the 150 years since the discovery, though, the skeleton and some of the items have disappeared. What happened to the skeleton is a mystery; it was recorded at the time that it was the remains of a young woman whose bones were well preserved due to the peaty conditions of her final resting place. The museum dates the dagger and blade to be 15th century, but as to who this young woman was or where she came from we will never know. The Oliphants and the Gregories -Elizabeth Oliphant. As mentioned in a previous article, East Calder was the home in the 17th century to the Oliphant family. The family lived at the Langton Estate in East Calder and moved in affluent circles in Edinburgh and throughout the United Kingdom.
18
Elizabeth was the 4th child of Charles and Barbara Oliphant and was baptised on 21st December 1667 in Edinburgh. Elizabeth spent most of her childhood in East Calder with her siblings and parents. In July 1695 Elizabeth married David Gregorie/Gregory. Her new husband was at that time Professor of Mathematics at Edinburgh University. His family, the Aberdeenshire Gregories, were a very academic family, with no less than 12 professors in 200 years being born into this family line. A year after his marriage to Elizabeth, David was appointed Professor of Astronomy at Oxford University. By this time he was already great friends with Isaac Newton; the two men had been credited with a ‘famous discussion’, which took place at Cambridge University in 1694 concerning the “kissing problem” faced by those playing billiards – the scientists disagreed about the number of spheres that could ‘kiss’ a central ball and it wasn’t until 1953 that mathematicians proved that Isaac Newton was correct. In 1708 David became ill and travelled, with Elizabeth, to the health resort of Bath. On their way back to London, however, his condition deteriorated and he died in Maidenhead where they had stopped. Elizabeth buried her husband in the local churchyard at Maidenhead and later erected a marble monument to him in Oxford. The couple had four children. The family appear to have stayed in England as there is no further record of Elizabeth in the Scottish Old Parish Records. Genealogy is fast becoming one of the most popular hobbies in the country with people becoming addicted to finding out all they can about their ancestors. If you are just starting your tree or if you are having problems with any of your branches, please email me at rootsandbranches@hotmail.co.uk

By Tougher Sentencing for Knife Crime campaign
W
e are a new non-funded campaign which we set up on Facebook (February 2012) called Tougher Sentencing For Knife Crime. We set this up in memory of Jim Tierney of Pumpherston who sadly lost his life in a horrific knife attack in April 2011, and in memory of all the other innocent victims who have lost their lives through this horrific crime. Since setting up our Facebook page we have been contacted by other families who are also going through the same heartache and we have added pictures of their loved ones to our memorial wall (search Facebook for Tougher Sentencing for Knife Crime). We have also launched a petition which can be found at http://www.gopetition.com/petitions/ tougher-sentencing-for-knife-crime.html

and we need 100,000 signatures before the Parliament will listen to us. Fund-raising day To raise awareness of what we are doing we have organised a memorial fundraising day at Craigswood Sports Centre playing fields on Sunday 29th April, from 1-3pm. All monies raised will be going to Cruse Bereavement Care Scotland and CHAS Children’s Hospice Association Scotland. Both charities will have representatives there on the day. Kirknewton Community Development Trust AGM and other news
T
hanks to everyone who recently attended the Kirknewton Community Development Trust Annual General Meeting. The findings of the Fauch Hill Wind Farm Community Consultation was given by IBP Strategy and Research and an update on discussions with the developers EFRG on community benefit and investment. The full report will be published when representations are made on the wind farm by Kirknewton Community Council at the end of March. The Kirknewton Community Development Plan update was presented as well as work of the Trust over the last twelve months. The positive reaction from the collected audience gave comfort that the objectives of the Trust for community benefit are being met. Further to our ‘Give It A Go’ meeting and article in last month’s Konect the Pilates Group (Friday morning, 9.15am, Church Hall) and the Kirknewton Stompers (Walking Group, Wednesday night, 7.30pm, outside park) continue. A new outside fitness class has also started on Wednesday at 7pm and on Saturday at 8am in the park. A meeting of the potential Running Group takes place in late March – keep an eye on the Kirknewton Community Facebook Group for starting times. Initial meetings about the Youth Group are scheduled for April and other volunteers have indicated they are willing to take the lead on a baking group, book club and choir. Those who showed an interest in a ‘Tidy Up Kirknewton’ group plan to take part in the ‘Keep Scotland Beautiful’ programme. The community come out and with support from the local council and clean up litter in a ‘spring clean’. The weekend of 28th/29th April has been chosen for this and further details will be made available on the facebook group, to community groups and through the primary school.

As spring has very nearly sprung it is hoped bulbs planted by volunteers in Autumn will flower in the park soon. After discussions with a number of kids in the village volunteer and local artist Ross Blair has presented his initial ideas for the youth art project on the hut in the park. Ross did the mural on the side of the school nursery and the designs for the hut are fantastic and will be a big improvement. This project is supported by the Park Action Group and West Lothian Council. Volunteer Duncan McCool has taken the lead on the cycling / walking multipath at Selm Muir Wood and potential paths leading to the area from the village. The Cycle Path Development Group are about to present to you a starting point for the wood paths and routes from the village (that will have to be agreed by landowners). The group will be looking for further ideas and feedback on the initial proposals and those will be taken (along with some more willing volunteers hopefully) on a walk round on the route in May. This information can then be taken further with the Forestry Commission so we can plan and cost the final route for this true community led initiative. The 10k Taper By David Syme

T
he race was on Sunday morning;
it was now the Thursday morning before. I had to go to my local village, East Calder, so I changed into my running kit. Fifteen minutes to the post office and chemist’s to pick up a prescription, then 15 minutes back, some pace variation using the distances between telephone posts, perhaps, nothing strenuous, just an easing of the muscles in the wind-down before the race. Taper run, they call it.
It was cool and pleasant; a gentle breeze all that was left of the previous days’ storms. The run to the shops was a slow but steady trot. The brain asked all parts of my body for injury reports, but none came. Wonderful! Anticipation of a race is a joy when you’re feeling good, and I was feeling good. Letters posted, I entered the chemist’s to join a considerable queue of people at the counter, with more folk waiting for their prescriptions. I asked: “How long will my mine be?” She waved a hand of explanation and apology briefly in the direction of the small crowd: “At least 40 minutes....”came the reply. A fractious child and a coughing adult helped me to decide not to wait; I took a chit and left the shop.
Last year local resident David Syme launched a book of short stories about runs in exotic locations, called “Running Away From Home.” The book is published by Diadem Books and has the ISBN: 0978-1-90802600-2 and costs £6.99. All royalties from book sales go to a charity: Tong-Len. This is an Edinburgh-based charity which helps street children in Northern India. The Owen family of Corstorphine made the brave decision to provide a stable home, love and an education for the street children of Dharamsala, having seen their wretched life. The project relies on the donations and goodwill of people who care. David has now retired and does not travel so much for work. His second book for Tong-Len is therefore called: “Running, Home and Away” and is due out in the early summer. Half of the stories are of runs in the Balerno and Calders area. The 10k Taper is one.
1)
I planned a pleasant, slow 40 minute run – nothing too strenuous. On to Mid Calder, over the Almond and up to Pumpherston then right past the golf course and back along the old railway line. The roads were quiet and I enjoyed the smooth hard surface of the pavements until I turned down onto the path on the railway line. After only a few metres I had to go under the road bridge. A huge puddle spread from one stone support across to the other. 30

Local Walk (Continued) I approached cautiously and noticed that the wall on the left had a low shelf just below the water line. I edged my way along to the far end of the bridge and was wondering how to cross over the rest of the puddle to dry land when I heard a noise behind me. A runner came at full tilt; a slim, young sandyhaired lad – head up and arms pumping: Splash! Splash! Splash! Splash! And away! Wow! I stood open-mouthed, then a wave of embarrassment swept over me. What would he have thought of me? An old duffer dressed for a run, but scared of a wee dub! I started to run after him. I did not want to chase him and perhaps alarm him, so I held station with him, about 70 metres behind. I was now splashing through the puddles, too. The trouble was that this chap was much better than I, and my bid to demonstrate that I, too, could handle a bit of discomfort on a run was hurting. We sped down the railway path. I was pleased that he turned and saw me, hopefully recognising that I could run after all. He did not cross the viaduct, but dropped down to the river and turned downstream. I felt that I had not fully made my point, so followed him into Almondell Park. When he reached the main park road I was hoping that he would turn left, and that I could turn right and relax, but he turned right and started to lope up the long hill. I had to follow. This would show him that I’m not to be underestimated! He must have known that I was using him as a pacer of sorts, and decided to see what I could do. Dog walkers looked at me with a mixture of curiosity, pity and amazement as I lumbered uphill at a pace which I would normally describe as my sprinting speed. When he reached the main road I could not have been more that 80 metres behind him, well, maybe 100. He turned left, thank goodness, away from the chemist’s, 32
so when I reached the road I stopped and stood there panting. The lad turned and saw me, then waved and ran on. I managed a weak wave to his back then tottered on to the shop. The crowd inside the shop was as before. When I entered, the sudden blast of hot air into my lungs brought on a coughing attack which, with my red face and mudsplattered clothing, ensured that I had as wide a circle of space round me as possible. I collected my prescription and, still coughing, limped home. My performance on Sunday was poorer than I had hoped, but Thursday’s run was one to remember because of the unexpected. I had been jolted out of a comfortable bimble by a runner who didn’t worry about puddles. He caught me “with my pants down” which showed me that I was getting soft. I had to prove to him and to myself that I could still run a bit, and really didn’t mind the mud and the wet. The thrill of the chase and the satisfaction of keeping up with the young lad were worth it, but as a taper for the 10km race it was a disaster!

April Recipe and Food Notes By Anne Pinkerton
T
his is a difficult time of the year for people wanting to cook seasonal food. Easter in Britain is not a big celebration with traditional festival meals; it is more a feast of chocolate and egg -rolling. Both fun but not a good daily diet! New spring fruit and vegetables may not be ready to harvest except in Egypt, Spain and further south. Inspiration may be a bit thin but there are dishes which will give pleasure, a hint of the weather softening and some new tastes to enliven the appetite. French Onion Soup and Mussels are good things to cook at the moment. They are not as substantial as winter foods but still warming and sustaining. French Onion Soup serves 6-8 750gm strong onions, sliced very finely bay leaf 50gm butter 1 tbsp plain flour 1 tbsp oil 2 tbsp Marmite Grated Gruyere or other strong cheese slices hard toasted French bread Melt the butter and oil together in a large, heavy bottomed pan. Add the onions and cook slowly till they begin to colour and become caramelized. Mix in the flour, cook for a minute, (do not burn it) and add the Marmite, bay leaf and about 3 pints of water. Cook for 30-40 minutes very gently. Taste and add black pepper, a little sugar or salt. To
38
get the real rich French flavour of the classic soup you need to add a dash of brandy. Put a slice of bread in each bowl pour over the soup and serve the grated cheese separately. Quick cooked mussels Cleaned and ready to cook mussels are usually in the supermarket. Traditionally they are sold by volume and half a litre is a good amount for a meal for 1 or a starter for 2. An onion, chopped 10gm butter glass dry white wine or cider Chopped parsley Check the details on the mussel packet and rinse them if instructed. Melt the butter in a large pan. Cook the onion gently till transparent and then on a high heat add the mussels and wine or cider. Put the lid on the pan and shake the mussels over the heat vigorously. Cook of 3-5 minutes, by which time all the mussels will have opened. Serve in bowls with chopped parsley scattered on top and lots of buttered crusty bread to soak up the juice. 

April Recipe and Food Notes (Continued) Rhubarb
Beautiful pink sticks of forced rhubarb are on sale just now and although they may seem a bit expensive there is little waste. Think light puddings or pretty sauce to go with mackerel. Later in the year rhubarb can be made into jam with ginger and be baked in pies or upside-down cakes. I think the first rhubarb of the year is nicest simply poached with a little orange zest and eaten with cream and junket. Junket has gone out of fashion but it is really a British food in the same tradition as crème fresh or yoghurt and deserves its place in our diet because it is so simple to make and is good with any stewed fruit. Poached Rhubarb with Junket 250gm sugar and ½ pint water made into syrup Zest or fine peeling of orange skin 500gm or packet of rhubarb, stems wiped and cut into short lengths Warm the syrup with the orange zest or peelings and then poach the
40
rhubarb in the pan very gently for about 10 minutes. Do not boil or the fruit will go to stringy shreds and lose its texture. Serve warm, cool or from the fridge. To make the junket ½ litre full cream or special rich Jersey milk A little sugar Rennet tablets (or liquid VegeRen is vegetarian rennet) Grating of nutmeg In a pan warm the cream or milk to just below blood heat (32oC) with the sugar. Test by feeling the pan - if it is too hot you will kill the rennet. Leave aside to cool. Add the rennet, stir well and pour into a serving bowl. (Looks good in a glass bowl). Grate a little nutmeg on the surface and leave to go cold and set. Do not put the junket in the fridge till it is set because rennet is an enzyme, like the cultures used in making yoghurt, and it needs to be at room temperature to set the milk.

f you have a baby under the age of 13 months, you need to know about Baby Sensory - unique classes specially developed for babies from birth to 13 months to enjoy rich and varied sensory experiences – as well of course as an invaluable social time for parents to meet up and swap notes on baby’s progress! Baby Sensory classes locally are based in the climbing centre at Ratho, and are run by Emma-Louise Beeson, who took on the franchise just over a year ago. Emma-Louise explains, “The classes are fun and relaxed and we teach a range of techniques for carers and parents to stimulate and to sooth their baby”. The classes are based on a wide range of different themes. For example one week might be a sleep technique week when the lights are low, tranquil music is playing, and you learn baby massage; another week might be a rock n roll baby week, all about stimulating babies with bright colours, shakers, balls and upbeat music. Another week might focus on textured play. “It provides parents and carers with a fantastic tool-kit of ideas for sharing sensory

Inside & Out By Tony Foster
I
t’s spring and the Easter holidays are here and Livingston is celebrating 50 years. Too much going on to stay in – so only a few films for you this month! Let’s take you through this month day by day (avoiding April Fool’s Day). There is an exciting programme of activities for children aged between 8 and 16 from 2nd – 5th April. Contact Low Port Centre in Linlithgow for further details. Fringe & folk favourites Edinburgh Fringe Festival regular and top comedian Craig Hill is ‘Blown by a Fan’ on 6th April at the Howden Park Centre in Livingston. The New York Times say the Paul McKenna Band are “The best Folk band to have come out of Scotland in the last twenty years” – they play the Howden Park on 7th April. Running and hunting The Beecraigs Easter 2, 5 and 10k run on 8th April is a great family event with Fit Kit the West Lothian Run mascot and Laura Colman from Pop Skool. All the children taking part in this event receive an Easter egg if you sign up online. After this, they start the 5K and 10K runs. During the 5k and 10K event, they have an Easter egg hunt for the children and some arts and crafts to keep the kids amused with prizes awarded from Fit Kit for the best decorated egg. Spring art Jupiter Artland opens their doors for the kids age 4 to 15 on 11th-12th April for a 2 day workshop making decoupage eggs and chocolate

sculptures. On 11th April you can also enjoy a spring walk at Harlaw from 1.30pm – this event is also suitable for under 15’s. Beer and fiddles Livingston Cricket club and The Round Table have joined forces for a Beer Festival charity event. They are using local micro breweries to provide them with fine local brews of beer from 13th-15th April. Livingston shopping centre will soon be home to one of Maggy Howarth’s new creations, and you can learn more about the inspiration behind it at a free event on 13th April at the Howden Park Centre. The day after, in celebration of Livingston’s 50th birthday, Livingston Fiddlers are joined by their friends from near and far for a Fiddle rally. With forty musicians on stage your toes will tap to a sprightly mix of reels, jigs and strathspeys. Book bugs Special Birthday bookbug Sessions Stories to celebrate Liv’s 50th take place in libraries across West Lothian from 17-19 April. There will be songs & rhymes for babies, toddlers & pre-school children and grown ups can join in the fun! For adults crime writer Lin Anderson discusses her work at Drumbrae Library Hub on 18th April – booking is essential. If you prefer a walk instead then head to Almondell and Calderwood Country Park Broxburn entrance for a 4 mile walk along the canal feeder to Lin Mill Aquaduct on the Union canal.

Scotland, burns and harps Join Scotland’s singing star Peter Morrison on 20th April at Donaldson’s School as he and his strong cast of singers and musicians bring you a music-packed Revuestyle show. They will take the audience on a musical journey from the wonderful worlds of Broadway and the West End, to the wonder of Italian and French Opera, to current songs from the world of popular music. They will also present a salute to the music of Scotland and Robert Burns. Songlines say the Rachel Hair Trio are “One of the UK’s finest contemporary Celtic harpists and tunesmiths”. Catch them on 20th April at Howden Park There is an exciting opportunity to see original choreographies and set dance syllabus work by the students attending the SQA accredited Higher Dance course at Inveralmond Community High School at the same venue on 21st April. The day after join Native New Yorker Jess Abrams as she sings a love letter to the Big Apple with songs and stories from Cole Porter to Cat Stevens. You can also come along to Howden Park Centre on the 23rd April for a World Book Night event. Get the chance to find out more about your local library service, pick up a FREE book and listen to a reading by an invited guest author. Passing California If you enjoy theatre then sit back, belt up, and get ready for a dramatic comedy roller coaster ride around Scotland in ‘Passing Places’ on 24th April at Howden. After having successfully toured the globe ‘Hotel California’, Scotland’s own tribute to The Eagles are now returning to Howden Park Centre on 27th April for all music fans.
