Message from the Editor Hello neighbours Hello and welcome to the February issue of the Konect Directory. Between these pages you’ll find all you need locally as usual to help you keep those New Year’s resolutions, from health and fitness to getting things done on the house. Or you could be looking ahead to the spring and getting organised for when the weather improves – get ahead of the crowd and get your painter and decorator or gardener booked up for when you want them, instead of waiting til the sun shines and everyone else books them up! Local writer John Wilkinson has contributed an interesting article on the origins of “Almond” and “Calder” this month, and we have of course all our regular columns too.

Congratulations to Mr Davey of Mid Calder who won the crossword prize last issue. This month, local pottery and craft studio, Potter Around, are offering a gift voucher to spend on any of their products or activities, see their advert on page 17. Thanks for reading the Konect Directory and supporting our local businesses!

CAUTHER: THE LAND OF HARD WATERS

John Wilkinson looks at the origins of the names ‘Calder’ and ‘Almond’

M

idcalder, East Calder, West Calder. Three separate villages. In the Scots tongue they’re each called Cauther. Together they’re known as The Calders. We use the names so often that we hardly think about them. But what does Calder mean? Until the local government ‘rationalisation’ of the mid-1970s, The Calders (including Pumpherston and Kirknewton) were part of Midlothian, as they had been for centuries. Apart from Pumpherston they were always divided from West Lothian by the River Almond. Almond is a word we’re familiar with: a type of eye-shaped ‘nut’ (the kernel of a stone-fruit) grown on an almond tree, and used in cooking. If we pound it into a paste with sugar we get marzipan for Christmas cakes. But our river has nothing at all to do with marzipan, or even almonds. So why does it look like it does? And what does it really mean? A clue: marzipan is marzapane in Italian, marcepaine in French, and was long called marchpane in English. Different languages change the basic word to suit. So which languages do Calder and Almond come from? To answer these questions we have to delve into ancient history. The science of genetics tells us that our ancestors have been here since the Ice Age. In the 12,000 or so years since then, many languages have spread into our small islands. We have no idea what the earliest ones might have been, and they could have come from anywhere: we were still part of the continent in those days. There is genetic evidence for early links with the Mediterranean, or even further east. The earliest languages died out, and two of the more recent ones (Manx and Cornish) followed recently, though their fans are

1

giving them the kiss of life. Four remain, three of them Celtic*1 : Irish, Scottish Gaelic (which grew out of Irish) and Welsh. The fourth, English, is called a Germanic language, but it too is related to Celtic in complex ways, and owes much to the Normans. Scots is its big sister. All have had an influence in West Lothian. We can tell this from a study of placenames. A place-name is like a snapshot that keeps things as they were while they themselves change: like a photograph of a blonde girl with ringlets and ribbons who’s now a grey-haired 90-year-old lady with a stick. And like an archaeological dig, place-names can lead us back through different levels of history to the time when the photo was taken, when the place-name was coined. Almond looks English, but it isn’t. That’s because it’s been handled so much over the years (like a much-looked-at photo). The first record of it is from 1420, when it was written down as Aumonde. In 1556 it was Awmond and had become Almond by 1593, though we know it was pronounced Ammon in 1843, which is how local folk still say it. Like many river-names, it’s one of our oldest, and might date back as far as the Bronze Age or beyond: in other words it could be over 4000 years old, coming from a language that place-name scholars call ‘Old European’, that they think perhaps grew into Celtic here. The river Aman in Wales has the same name, because the same language was used all over what we now call ‘Britain’. Long before it got confused with a nut, Almond started out as something like Ambona, where amb- refers to ‘the water’ and -ona makes the water both ‘female’ and ‘great’: we could call our river ‘big female water’, ‘Great Water Lady’ or even ‘Great River Goddess’. While we still treat

Celtic pronounced Keltik and nothing to do with Old Firm football.

rivers as sewage drains, our Celtic ancestors saw a source of life and a divinity in our waters and respected them. So next time you say the river-name Almond, think: I am using a Bronze Age artefact that is not only ancient, but holy! Calder looks Scottish, but it isn’t. Here we run into problems: it’s actually Welsh. This needs some explanation. It doesn’t mean the Welsh came up here, named it and were chased back to Wales by angry locals with spears. Place-names don’t change that way. Most people’s history starts with the Romans. When they were here about 2000 years ago, the whole island had long been inhabited by Britons, who spoke British. We used to call them ‘Ancient Britons’. Those who lived in the unconquered northern part became known as Picts, and their language evolved into Pictish. To the south it evolved into Brythonic, sometimes called Cumbric as it lived on in Cumberland and Wales, called Cymru in Welsh (pronounced Cumrie). As the Romans only manned our Antonine Wall for about a generation, Lothian was on the edge of empire and shared elements of both Pictish and Brythonic, which were closely related in any case. After Gaelic came, originally from Ireland, Pictish died out around 900AD, but Brythonic went on developing into Welsh, and was still spoken in Lothian when the Normans arrived less than a thousand years ago. It survived perhaps as late as 1300, though by this time it was low status. William Wallace, whose surname means ‘Welshman’, may have known it. It’s important to remember that our ancestors spoke Brythonic before they spoke Gaelic, then Scots. This is a surprise to some, as this sort of history isn’t taught in schools. In Norman times (1153) Calder was written Caledouir, in 1170 Kaledofre and Kaldover in 1178. Caled is ‘hard’ in Welsh (as in Caledonia), and dwfr (‘doover’) is ‘water’ (Dover in England comes from the same

word). By the 1700s, changing all the time, it had become Cather, but in British times it would have been something like Caleto-dubras ‘hard waters’, named for the Almond and the two other rivers that make Midcalder an almost-island at the heart of The Calders, with its own old centre around Calder House, the Kirk of Calder, St Mungo’s Well and the ancient mound called The Cunnigar, or Witches’ Knowe. West Lothian Place-Names was published in 1992. The first edition of 1000 sold out and is now online and free for all at www.cyberscotia\west-lothian-place-names. This work is being updated and an expanded second edition currently being prepared. It will examine as many place-names as possible, including field-names and other names not always found on maps (such as The Given Jaw, The Leeden [Leyden] Brae). If you know of any local place-names of any sort, old or new, or wish to help in collecting them, please get in touch either via Konect or to johngarthwilkinson@hotmail.co.uk. Every contribution used will be acknowledged.

Thought for the Month By Jackie Whigham

Y

ou can only stay in unfulfilling and unhealthy situations when you’re in denial of the truth. These situations can vary from jobs, to weight problems, to relationships to ... fill in the blanks. Where there’s denial, there are excuses, cover-ups and lies which lead to inner conflict and mediocrity. Recognise that you are denying the truth because there’s a pay off in it for you. That pay off is usually security! To keep this sense of security you will probably trade your integrity, personal power, peace of mind, even your inner freedom. So, the driving force behind these unfulfilling and unhealthy situations turns out to be your own insecurity! 14

This fear is born from a belief system in scarcity and a lack of confidence in your ability to be independent enough to follow your bliss. Only the truth will set you free – and in return, the truth will give you clarity of mind and courage to go forward with a confidence in yourself. You will know that no matter what, you’ll always be looked after by the powers that be. The strength you need is inside you. Everything you need to know and do to move on is inside you....everything! Have a great day! For comments, questions or subjects you’d like me to write about in the future write to jackiewhigham1@aol.com.

Working together and enjoying it

A

lmost 2,000 Rotarians make up District 1020, an area covering the whole of the South of Scotland. And many reside in the Central Belt. But at a time when local and world events dictate it, Rotarians are required to do more and that's why they need more members — men and women of varying ages. Great Life It's a great life being a Rotarian and the Rotary Clubs in and around the Edinburgh area are inviting like-minded people to join them. It's not all work and no play. Contrary to rumour, Rotarians dance, play golf, enjoy each other's company and, yes, they party when the job is done. But what they excel at is getting their priorities right and coming to the aid of the less fortunate. Community-minded people of any age or gender are welcome and they would like to tell you more. The demands are varied — the rewards immense. Sounds exciting? It is — and you could be a part of this great team. Telephone or email Ralph Allardyce on 0131 333 1231

Michael McGeary and Sally Simpson from Portobello were among the competitors in last year's competition.

or email him on jaamy@blueyonder.co.uk And please take up their invitation to visit a Club — it could change your life and the lives of others! Socials Why not visit the Festival of Youth Music to be held on 23rd February? A Rotarian will be happy to accompany you, introduce you to local Club members and explain more about the variety of social gatherings, including golf outings, dinners, quizzes and speaker visits to name but a few. And please, bring your partner and family for that's what Rotary means. Want to know more? Telephone or email Ralph Allardyce on 0131 333 1231 or email him on jaamy@blueyonder.co.uk

Using records to solve a mystery Family history column by Maureen McIntyre

O

ne forename stands out in my tree as very unusual; my second cousin five times removed was born in 1856 at Castle Menzies Lodge, Weem in Perthshire. His parents were William Fernie and Jessie Menzies, his siblings were named Margaret and James, all common Scottish names but this youngest and last son was named Duleep/Dhuleep Singh Fernie. This name intrigued and puzzled me and I could find no answers in the marriage, death or census records. I decided to look at other archive records available and looked at the National Archives of Scotland Valuation Rolls. I struck gold and was delighted to find that in 1855 Menzies Castle, Weem in Perthshire was being rented by The Maharajah Duleep Singh. The Maharajah was a favourite friend of Queen Victoria and I found this written in a book entitled Sovereign, Squire and Rebel: Maharajah Duleep Singh by Peter Bance Page 75 Coronet Publishing 2009 “.........the Maharajah was known for playing the field and sending certain young housemaids and female servants home pregnant. ........................in some cases the husbands knowingly accepted the offspring as their own, compelled to keep silent for the sake of employment and self respect.” The 1881 census for St Pancreas, London sees 24 year old Duleep Sing Fernie living with his wife and his occupation is listed as a Shipbrokers Clerk, a long way from a ploughman’s son in Perthshire only ten years earlier. We can only guess at his real paternity! If you are just starting your tree or if you are having problems with any of your branches, please email me and I will endeavour to help. Drop in Event

Sunday 6th Februa ry

Tony Foster has been employed by the Kirknewton Community Development Trust as your Development Officer. The post has been supported by the National Lottery through the Big Lottery Fund. Tony, who has lived in the village for nearly ten years and started the Kirknewton Community Facebook Group*, will be working together with an independent community engagement specialist to get your ideas to improve life and work in the village. The “I love Kirknewton” campaign begins in February and will identify your key needs and aspirations for the village and will help a comprehensive community development plan for additional lottery funds of £1,000,000. Tony, working with consultant Vikki Hilton, will be asking you what you like about living in Kirknewton, what you don’t like and what would make Kirknewton a better place to live and why. Vikki helped the trust in 2007 and 2008 when people were asked about the renewable energy project. Vikki and Tony will be meeting with village groups and knocking on doors throughout February. To make sure your voice is heard please come to a Drop In Event on Sunday 6th February at the Village Hall anytime from 10am til 6pm. There will be refreshments available. If you can’t make the Drop In Event please e mail Tony at tonykirknewton@gmail.com or phone him on 07734 884320 and he will arrange a time to come and see you at home.

If you can’t make the Drop In Event please e mail Tony at tonyki rknewton@gmail.c om or phone him on 07 734 884320 and he will arrange a time to com e and see you at ho me. Your ideas will be presented in early March for additional feedback from you. If Kirknewton is successful and is awarded the £1,000,000 funding from the Big Lottery that money will be added to the current £300,000 Kirknewton Community Development Trust Fund and will be invested towards the Anaerobic Digester plant (or ‘Eco Plant’). The Trust wishes to earn a regular income for the community by generating renewable energy. The anaerobic digestion of food waste will produce electricity for sale to the grid, compost and fertiliser which can be sold to local farmers, growers and golf courses and heat which can be used to heat polytunnels for local market gardening. The plant will also include an educational viewing gallery where you can learn about the process and local history. Once built and fully operational 50% of the Eco Plant yearly profits will go towards funding your ideas. Before then the ideas shared by you during the community work may be used for any funding applications that are of interest to you or community groups. This is a project for you as part of the community. Please help by dropping in on Sunday 6th February, even if you only have 5 minutes, and share your ideas about Kirknewton. Help Us with Kirknewton’s Food Waste Recycling Pilot Project Kirknewton Community Development Trust is about to run a pilot food waste recycling collection project. Why are we doing this? Food waste from our village currently goes to landfill sites where is degrades and releases methane into the atmosphere. Methane is a very powerful greenhouse gas, 20 times more powerful than carbon dioxide. Releasing it into the atmosphere contributes to climate change. We want to change this. We are planning to collect food waste from householders in Kirknewton from a separate bin. The food waste will be sent to a biodigester instead of to landfill saving hundreds of tonnes of methane emissions. This project will carry out important research which can be used to establish similar projects in other communities, making Kirknewton a green pioneer! It will help to inform the planning of Kirknewton’s proposed Anaerobic Digester (or Eco Plant). Once the Eco Plant is up and running we plan to process Kirknewton’s food waste in our local Eco Plant.

A daunder up Dalmahoy Hill By Karen Murray

W

inter walking can mean braving all sorts of weather from crunchy walks in frost and snow, the sun making the ground sparkle like diamanté while the cold takes your breath away, to muddy hikes in the pouring rain and howling gales. I prefer not to go too far when the weather is inclement and preferably to walk from my doorstep. Leaving my house in Kirknewton I generally start walking along the road, left or right from the front door and simply see where it takes me. There are plenty of routes along relatively quiet roads and paths and recently I found myself heading left from the front door and out of the village towards Edinburgh. Before too long I found myself on to the back road to Balerno.

I love the views you get from this road - all the way to Corstorphine Hill and Arthur’s Seat (on a clear night it is possible to watch the Festival and Hogmanay fireworks from here). The road meanders along past Easter Newton farm to the old Quarry works and Haggs Farm and it turns sharply to the left to cross the railway line. However at this point you will see a green signpost 30

marking the start of the footpath to Balerno - a 2 mile walk. I have always noticed the sign when driving along here but never stopped to actually walk along it. A rather muddy farm track it parallels the Long Dalmahoy Road for a while before dog-legging sharply to the right past some farm huts and narrowing somewhat. It continues through the trees until it his the old Quarry works on the right. The path then goes sharply up and here you can head up Dalmahoy Hill.

Ultimately the path will cross the hill and head through the fields until it exits on the A70 on the outskirts of Balerno but I wasn’t planning on such a long walk. I decided to simply head to the summit of the hill, do some exploring and retrace my footsteps home. I had read quite a bit about this hill and the secrets it holds so it was good to finally make it here. It was somewhat of a challenge to make it up on what was a very blustery day and I walked, I couldn’t help but wonder about the devastation that has been wrought on this once beautiful landscape by the quarrying that took place.

Please remember to mention The Konect Directory when contacting advertisers

However, putting that to one side I was enjoying the fresh air, the exercise and the history that still emanates from this old hill fort. There is a modern trig point, but the remains of the fort (probably Iron Age) are also visible even to the untrained eye. The fort would have occupied an area of around 400x100m surrounded by stone walling and terracing and was probably an offshoot of the larger hill fort on the adjacent Kaimes Hill. You can see the obvious circular shape that was built into the natural shape of the summit. Dalmahoy Hill is a craggy hill (not the correct geological terminology I am sure) and it therefore seems fitting that you can see quite clearly Arthur’s Seat and Salisbury Crags to the East and

also Cairnpapple Hill (one of my favourite places regular readers will no doubt know) to the West. In fact the view is quite stunning and totally worth the very windy climb and the not so attractive walk to get here. It is quite amazing what you can find on your doorstep if you just wrap up and step outside so why not give it a go. Forget that is is still winter, wrap up warm and go exploring. You never know where it may take you.

Vet’s Tip: Kennel Cough (Acute tracheobronchitis)

K

ennel cough is an extremely contagious disease of the respiratory system which affects dogs of all ages. The disease is caused by a mixture of viruses and bacteria, which spread easily wherever dogs congregate, hence the name Kennel Cough. This can be in boarding kennels, dog shows, training classes, or simply out on walks. Symptoms include a harsh dry cough, which may cause retching - it may even sound like the dog is choking; tiredness, loss of appetite and a mildly raised temperature. Very occasionally, the disease can progress to pneumonia. Old dogs or ones with other diseases are more at risk than ďŹ t healthy dogs.

Kennel cough can be treated with cough suppressants and antibiotics but of course it is far better that it is prevented by ensuring your dog has had the kennel cough vaccine. The vaccine (squirted into the nose) should have been administered within the last year otherwise they are at risk of catching this very unpleasant disease. Most good boarding kennels will insist that your dog is vaccinated before accepting them. If you do notice any of these symptoms, contact your vet immediately.

Recipe

Baileys Chocolate Truffles Whoever thought a simple recipe could have such sophisticated results? These delicious truffles make a gorgeous present when placed in a lined gift box or cellophane-wrapped and tied with a bow. But if you’re staying in on Valentines day, a pile of these little delicacies will go down perfectly with a glass of wine and a good film. Before making these truffles, remember that they do require time to set. However, you can make them in advance as they’ll keep in the freezer for up to 6 weeks and around a week in the fridge. Ingredients: 100g plain chocolate 50ml double cream 14g butter 1 tbsp Baileys or another liqueur For coating afterwards: good quality plain, milk or white chocolate. Recipe: 1) Pour the cream into a saucepan and bring to the boil. 2) Break your chocolate into chunks and add to the cream, stirring until melted and thoroughly mixed. 3) Remove the pan from the heat and add the butter, stirring until smooth. 4) Add the Baileys or liqueur and pour the whole mixture into a bowl. 5) Place the bowl in the fridge for around an hour until the temperature has gone down but the mixture has not yet set. 6) With an electric whisk, beat the mixture until it has lightened in both colour and texture. 7) Replace in the fridge and leave overnight. It will be worth the wait, promise! 8) Remove the bowl and with a teaspoon, take small amounts and roll them into balls. Try not to handle the mixture too much - roughly-shaped truffles will look fine once they’re coated. 9) Finally, roll the truffles in either cocoa powder, chopped nuts, desiccated coconut or grated chocolate. For the best results however, dip them in melted chocolate and put them on greaseproof paper in the fridge to set.

Chocolate has been a delicacy for over fifteen hundred years, traced back as far as the ancient Aztecs. However, it was not until the Victorian period that chocolate became a solid food. Before then, it was enjoyed first as a spiced drink made from ground roasted cocoa beans and chilli, and later as a sweeter drink. The Aztecs of Mexico prized their cocoa beans above gold, using them as currency (100 bought a slave), they even paid their taxes in bean-form! Britain was rather late in joining the chocoholism that was sweeping the world. When English buccaneers boarded what they presumed was a Spanish treasure ship in 1579, they found it loaded with ‘dried sheep droppings’ and subsequently burned it down. An expensive mistake, indeed! We got there eventually however, with the first Chocolate House opening in London in 1657 - though it wasn’t until 1847 that the first solid chocolate appeared, courtesy of Fry & Sons of Bristol. Fact Quakers were the pioneers of chocolatemaking for centuries, owning the likes of Fry, Rowntree and Cadbury. Why should I eat it? When eaten in moderation, dark chocolate can lower blood pressure, is full of antioxidants, aids circulation, stimulates the brain and has antidiarrhoeal effects. Other research has suggested that chocolate is good for a cough, with the theobromine ingredient being nearly a third more effective than codeine. Why shouldn’t I eat it? The lighter varieties aren’t quite so good for you and large consumption can lead to obesity. There are even some concerns over lead poisoning from some kinds of chocolate! Remember, the theobromine in chocolate can render it as toxic to some animals such as cats and dogs - so keep an eye on that Yorkie!
