Message from the Editor Hello neighbours Welcome to the end of the year and all the shopping, organising and jobs around the house that have to be done this month! You’ll find all you need within the pages of this magazine – reduce your stress this Christmas by picking one thing that you would normally do yourself and getting a local business or tradesman to do it for you instead. This is a joint December/January issue as we don’t produce a magazine for January. We‘ve put together a fantastic feature on eating out locally - turn to pages 64 - 65 for a range of discount vouchers that restaurants and takeaways throughout the area are very generously offering to Konect readers. These are for you to use in January, so after the excitement of Christmas has died down, use these vouchers to treat yourself in the New Year. Cut the pages out and stick them on your fridge!
Congratulations to Fiona Millard of East Calder who won the crossword prize last month. This month, Deer Park Golf and Country Club are offering tenpin bowl and dine for four, so turn to the crossword on page 42 for your chance to win. Thanks for your support of the Konect Directory this year! Have a great holiday season and look out for the February issue at the end of January!

The River Almond
T
he River Almond, along with the Water of Leith and the Esk, was one of the main routes of incursion inland from the coast by Scandinavian and other settlers, and as such had an important impact on the settlement of the Lothians centuries ago. It’s hard to imagine the Almond as a navigable river nowadays for more than short lengths, as it has been very much changed by nature and, more significantly, by the various activities along its banks over the centuries. The industrial history of the central belt of Scotland can be traced in the form of numerous weirs, remains of mills and other riverside activities and for a long time the Almond had the dubious distinction of being one of the most polluted rivers in Scotland thanks to the impact of mining and heavy industry in the central belt. Rising in the Cant Hills, just North of Shotts (North Lanarkshire), the Almond is joined in West Lothian by Breich Water at Seafield. Most of its catchment is in fact in West Lothian, where it flows past Whitburn, through Livingston and Mid Calder. Here, at the western end of Almondell Country Park, it is joined first by Murieston Water and then Linhouse Water via the “Linn Jaw”, natural falls three metres high. The river then passes over a weir where a Canal Feeder diverts water and carries it to the Union Canal three miles away at Lin’s Mill. After flowing under the Union Canal the river turns northwards, tumbles over a weir at Clifton Hall and is joined by the Brox Burn at Kirkliston. Just north of Edinburgh
Airport it is joined by the Gogar Burn for the final stretch down to the Firth of Forth at Cramond. From source to sea the Almond is 28 miles long. The river was a source of power for various mills. The “West Mill” in Mid Calder, later named Wallace Mill (and after which the present Wallace Mill Gardens is named), and was a grain mill which, according to a report in 1894, was “celebrated for the quality of its produce”. Flour and oatmeal produced here were sold as far afield as Glasgow, initially transported by horsedrawn vehicles and later via the Union Canal. There was a mill on this site from very ancient date, as there is a reference to “West Mylne of Calder” in 1590 in a list of tenants of the barony at the time. Another mill, the East Mill, stood at the site of the present East Calder sewage works, and was also of very ancient date. It was in ruins by the late 19th century, but there is a reference to “Eist Miln of Calder” in the mid 16th century parish records. There was also a waulk mill (woollen cloth) and flax mills (cotton cloth) and bleaching in 18th century at various locations on the river, and forges and ironworks further upstream used the water to power hammers. New Calder Mill, about a mile further up the river from West Mill, was a paper mill that survived until much more recently, latterly producing cardboard for the packaging industry. West Lothian’s oil shale and deep coal mining industries of the 19th and 20th centuries took a heavy toll on the River Almond. It is said that it ran “nearly black

at times and oil and particles of coal dust had been seen.” The wildlife suffered and by 1884 angling on the river had ceased completely. The river was useless for cattle or for domestic use at the time. It remained in this heavily polluted state for a long time, until the industries that polluted it fell into decline. Great improvements to the water quality became possible, and the creation of the Forth Purification Board (now SEPA) was a major driving force in the clean-up process. Pollution from the defunct industries can still occasionally be a problem when the water level rises in abandoned pits and the water which is discharged contains iron and sulphur, but there is on-going management of the River Almond catchment area by a partnership of organisations working on continual improvement including treating sources of pollution from defunct industries and treating discharges of domestic sewage in treatment works. Water treatment plants have helped although the river still suffers from detergent pollution and run-off from the agricultural land. The white foam that can sometimes been seen floating on it is caused by household and industrial detergents in the sewage. As bacteria in
the water use oxygen to break this effluent down, it can have a detrimental effect on fish and other aquatic life who are competing for the oxygen; the Almond is sill the primary means of transporting West Lothian’s waste water to the sea. The East Calder sewage treatment plant was opened in 1969 to deal with Livingston’s sewage needs, and treated effluent flows into the river under the Pipe Bridge. It’s easy to take for granted as it rushes past us on the way to the sea, but the Almond has been a vital part of the area for centuries - as an early transport route, a boundary between conflicting armies, a source of food, a source of power for local industry. It has suffered terrible pollution but now, thanks to huge efforts, been cleaned up and is once again a resource for wildlife and a recreational resource for us to enjoy.
Wildlife of the Almon
d
With the demise of min ing and heavy industry, along with the efforts of various organisations to clean the river up, it is being repopulated with wildlife. There is a healthy population of Brown Trout, and Atlantic Salmon and Sea Trout return every year. Work is ong oing to improve salmon passes on the we irs or other measures to encourage and allow salmon to travel freely. Stoneloac h, minnows and stickleback also popula te the Almond. Birds to be seen around the river banks include Grey Heron, Dip per, Comorant and ever the Kingfishe r if you are lucky. Increasing numbers of otter have been sighted in recent years. Leeches, midge larvae, freshwater shrimp s, mayfly larvae can be found hiding und er stones. Mallard ducks are common, and Daubenton’s bats take insects on the win g just above the surface of the water.

History of the Wreath
Caroline Garrard of The Wreath Store looks at the history of the wreath...
W
hat a long history the wreath has with pageants and ceremonies! Who would have thought that the ancient Egyptians formed a chaplet (a wreath or garland for the head) by sewing flowers to linen bands and tying them around their heads? Or that in ancient Greece not only were they awarded to victorious athletes, as prizes to poets and orators, but young lovers hung wreaths on their lovers’ doorways as a sign of affection? The Romans continued the tradition by honouring victorious generals with laurel wreaths. Napoleon was even crowned Emperor of France with a gleaming wreath of golden laurel leaves. Wreaths however are not exclusive to great athletes, emperors or ancient poets. All over the world, wreath-making has developed in
10
countries as far apart as India and Mexico with a range of materials being used, from the usual olive, pine and laurel to brightly coloured wool and fabric. However diverse the materials, the festivals and celebrations are all the same – births, weddings, Christmas, New Year, Easter or harvest time, wreaths are used as a symbol to signify love, protection, friendship, rebirth and even life itself. Today, wreaths are a stunning decorative touch year round. Whether you hang a wreath on your front door to give guests a warm welcome or for that finishing touch to a room’s decoration, the splash of colour on a cold winter’s day is sure to add a feeling of warmth and excitement over the coming festive season.

Mount Kilimanjaro Community First Aid Programme
K
irknewton resident Tina Wren helps run a programme to bring vital first aid and other health skills to a community in Tanzania, and is looking for young people from West Lothian to join in the project. Tina Wren is a founder and the UK coordinator for the Mount Kilimanjaro First Aid Community Programme. Young people at Mount Kilimanjaro School in Tanzania are trained to teach first aid so that they can transfer these skills to others within their own communities, empowering them to boost health standards. They learn a range of other skills and receive practical help such as improvements to the school environment. The project is entirely selffunded and for the past two years Tina has been fund-raising with car-boot sales and other activities in West Lothian. Tina says, “We have just returned from Tanzania where we have decorated a number of orphanages and are now ready to recruit people for the 2011 visit to help
achieve our aims. We believe that education is critical for development as we set out to equip the younger generation with the skills and knowledge to support themselves for the challenges they all face ahead in Africa and the UK. Young people from Scotland volunteering to join the scheme are encouraged to achieve skills which will equip them for their role in Tanzania. This is could be a once in a lifetime opportunity for those wanting to join us and see the difference they can make in their own lives whilst changing others' at the same time”. The Mount Kilimanjaro First Aid Community Programme is now linked with the charity TEACH (Time to Educate Africa's Children). Tina is passionate about providing opportunities for young people in West Lothian to gain skills and experience as they help people in Tanzania, so the project is to the mutual benefit of all involved.
What are you doing now and next summer? Have you got 4 weeks spare to volunteer in Africa or Scotland? Teaching first-aid, English, music, art or football coaching, spending time with orphaned children, counselling or perhaps more practical interventions like building shelters or decorating. Check out our YOU TUBE video: type in Mount Kilimanjaro First Aid Community Programme 2010 Working jointly with Teach, UK registered charity no. 1137679 Mount Kilimanjaro School a registered non profit making organisation no 22993 Would you like to become involved with volunteering at this end or in Tanzania? Volunteering in Africa is a self-funded programme, you will be given advice on how to fund raise. Volunteering can mean acquiring new skills which will allow you to become useful contributors to our work in Tanzania. Our aims are to make positive changes in your own lives as well as others'. Are you prepared to fund raise to support your own application? Then give us a call. Thought for the Month By Jackie Whigham
Three Gifts For Christmas
L
ive – Living life to the fullest is one of the three greatest gifts you can give yourself. It’s also quite simple! Stop worrying what others think about you and allow yourself to live the life you were born to live. Give yourself permission to let your hair down and dance to the tune of your unique life – make sure that tune is yours and no one else’s! Today Live! Love – Learning to love from the heart is another of the three greatest gifts. From the heart centre there are no judgements or criticism of yourself or others, only acceptance of what is. As you allow others To Be - you will find others allow you To Be. It’s known as Unconditional Love. Today Love!

Laugh – Laughter carries an uplifting vibration. It’s extremely contagious because it can make you smile, even at the sound of someone else’s. Laughter is a true gift as it brings immense joy into every cell of your being. This joy sends forth a healing energy that brings you alive and shines through every fibre of your being. The Jewellery Workshop
Y
ou may not realise that there is a complete manufacturing process happening every day right on the Main Street of East Calder ... but that is exactly what Des Cowan of the Jewellery Workshop does at 144 Main Street. A traditional goldsmith and silversmith, Des starts with the metals that he melts into the bars he needs and ends with beautiful custom-made pieces of jewellery. I visited the Jewellery Workshop to get an insight into the process. Most day to day work is watch and jewellery repairs, working with gold, silver and occasionally platinum. Des showed me a bracelet with intricate gold links that he was repairing. A lot of his work is very intricate and Des takes his time and infinite patience to produce a quality enduring result. The other principal service he provides is custom-designed rings and pendants - every piece is unique. The starting point might be a piece of gold or a precious stone that has sentimental value that you want to incorporate into a new piece. Or you may have no ideas at all and Des can help by showing you some basic designs that can be customised. For engagement and wedding rings for example, there may be a basic ring you like that Des can start from, or he might start from scratch by melting gold he already has. Every little scrap and off-cut of gold is saved, and goes into a crucible to be melted down. The molten gold is poured into an ingot block and left to harden. The resulting ingot is filed and cut to approximately the size needed, then put through a roller to flatten it to the profile required for the ring. The flattened metal is heated gently to soften it enough to be worked into a ring.. For this Des uses a blowpipe, a method in use since Victorian times, that gives him control over the flame so that he can direct the heat exactly where it’s needed. Once the metal has been shaped into a ring, it’s ready to be filed, polished, cut and worked until the desired result is produced. It may
24
need holes drilled in it for stones to be set, or it may need to be engraved. Other gold decorations may need to be added on - Des can to do pretty much anything, and will be happy to discuss design options with you. He works closely with complimentary specialist trades such as engravers, restringers (for necklaces) and watchmakers for any work that he doesn’t do himself. Des is a full time served jeweller with nearly 30 years’ experience. He grew up in Currie and served a 5 year apprenticeship at Dickson, Slaven and Rae in Edinburgh, where he also worked after his apprenticeship. They were the biggest manufacturing jewellers in Edinburgh at the time. After working for various other manufacturing jewellers, Des set up the Jewellery Workshop in East Calder 10 years ago. The Jewellery Workshop supplies watch straps and batteries, engraving for medals and plaques, as well as selling a range of silver jewellery. Call the Jewellery Workshop on 01506 880590 or email jewelleryworkshop@wtnet.co.uk. 144 Main Street, East Calder EH53 0HD. Open Mon – Fri 9am – 5pm, Sat 9am – 1pm.

A walk through time By Karen Murray
I
f you like a walk to include a fabulous view and have something of historical interest thrown in, then a hike up Cairnpapple Hill is an ideal choice.
one of the best vantage points in central Scotland with views all the way to Goatfell on Arran in the West and the Bass Rock in the East.
Follow the brown tourist signs from Bathgate and Torphichen to the hill and you will find space for a few cars at the side of the road near the steps that lead up Cairnpapple Hill. Head up the steps and you are among the Bathgate Hills with panoramic views. A well marked path leads up the hill, although it can be a little muddy underfoot if it has been raining and the wind can most certainly cut through you so wrap up warmly.
However, if you do make the trip between April and September, it is most definitely worth digging deep for the entry fee and taking a look inside. Once up the steps of the concrete dome, the door will be opened for you and entry into the burial chamber is via a ladder. There is a very obvious feeling of tranquility and peacefulness inside, no matter what is going on outside but it is good if you can time it to be the only visitor and really enjoy the peace.
It is not a long walk although it is fairly strenuous for a short period. You will soon see a little ahead of you a strange looking corrugated iron hut that would look more in place during WW2. This is home to the Historic Scotland ticket office for admission to the Cairnpapple cairn and henge itself - one of the most important prehistoric sites on mainland Scotland. It is also home to the custodian who takes great pleasure in telling the history of the site and giving a guided tour. The henge itself is only open during the summer months so at this time of year you will not be able to seek refuge in the hut or gain entry to the henge. This does not of course stop you walking atop the rather odd looking concrete mound protecting the important site and taking in the views, and the walk up the hill and all around the Bathgate Hills is pleasure enough alone. Not only is the site of huge historical interest, the views are simply magnificent - the hill is considered by many to have 30
View from Cairnpap ple, photogra ph by Da ve Clegho rn
Activity at this site can be traced back over 5000 years when our Neolithic ancestors built a henge. Fast forward 1000 years and the henge is no longer in use but the local community is using the site as an important burial area. The most recent activity dates from 400AD with Christian burials and as Cairnpapple is only a mile east of St Ninian’s Church in Torphichen there is a

theory that Cairnpapple is linked to the Sanctuary Stone in the churchyard there. If you want to extend your walk, why not walk along the B792 to the village and check out the stone too. Historic Scotland does organise various events at
Cairnpapple from time to time so if you want to combine walk with activity, keep an eye on the Historic Scotland website. Otherwise simply enjoy the walk and the views and look out for the wind that always seems to blow across the Bathgate Hills.

Old Parish Records
Family history column by Maureen McIntyre
I
have lived in East Calder for 22 years and must admit to never having heard of the village until my husband and I were looking for a new home within easy commute of Edinburgh. Our first visit was on a sunny summer’s evening and we quickly felt very at home and were lucky enough to find the perfect family home. I knew nothing of my family tree at that point, but was amazed to discover some 20 years later that my 6 x great grandfather William Crawford was born on 18th April 1714 in East Calder, Mid Lothian. Prior to 1855 the only records that survive for Births, Marriages and Deaths in Scotland are The Old Parish Records (OPR’s) and those for Kirknewton and East Calder range from 1642-1854, although I can find no trace of a marriage certificate for William’s parents Malcolm Crawford and Marion Page. Finding the Crawford family proved quite difficult and the main problem I encountered is a very common one when trying to trace your family in records dated before 1855. I came across 9 various spellings of the surname CRAWFORD within the OPR’s of Scotland with the earliest dated 6th October 1602, in the district of Edinburgh City. CRAWFORD CRAWFOORD CRAWFOORDE CRAWFUIRD CRAWFURD CRAWFURDE CRAFURD CRAUFORD CRAUFURD
There are many reasons why this is a common problem with earlier records -
38
•
•
•
Many families will have had none or very little education and will not have known how to write their name. The minister or session clerk that detailed the OPR’s would write his interpretation of the names given to him. Palaeography is the study of old handwriting and as many of the OPR’s are written in different handwriting styles they are open to interpretation and miss-interpretation!
Another issue that makes completing your family tree before 1855 more difficult is the common practice that was followed in many areas of making no mention of the mother of the child. This is very frustrating as it is difficult to be 100% certain that you are following the correct family. If you come across this problem it is important to look at the wider picture to try and assure yourself that the entry is indeed for your family. • •
•
•
Does the entry make any mention of the father’s occupation? Is the entry in the parish you were expecting? (Many workers, particularly in the farming community moved around to find work, making them more difficult to trace). Does the name fit with the families traditional fore-names? (Children tended to be named after their grandparents and parents). Are there other entries for the same father with a 2 year gap? (A large percentage of births were consistently 2 years apart).
OPR’s are a valuable archive and hold a wealth of information but they need to be approached with caution and never assume!

On Saturday 30th October 2010 Living Street (the national charity that stands up for pedestrians) carried out a Street Audit in Kirknewton. Community Street Audits evaluate the quality of public spaces – streets, housing estates, parks and squares – from the viewpoint of the people who use them. It’s more than smooth pavements and clean streets; we need to get about safely and easily on foot. Public space works best if it’s designed and maintained to allow much more than just walking. Streets are also places to meet friends and neighbours, shop, talk, play and watch the world go by. Vibrant streets create safer neighbourhoods, less fear of crime and a healthier environment. We set forth to do a Street Audit (in the rain) from Station Road East, over the level crossing to Kirknewton Court and then back over the level crossing to the school and up to and through the park and Main Street to the cemetery.

Our observations are highlighted as follows: 1. Narrowness of pavement at lower Station Road East at the junction of the connection to the A71 at Milrig. 2. Sightlines at this junction and the exceptional length of the crossing 40m without a refuge 3. No signage of the railway station such as a welcome, map, direction arrows to Kirknewton and the ‘Calders’ and no pavement into the northern platform. 4. Lack of street painting in Station road particularly ‘No Stopping’ bicycle and cross zones at the school and the church and narrowness of the refuge in the middle of the road at the church. Tree and bush branches inhibiting the safety of pedestrians. The temporary 20MPH speed limit at school times, flashing lights was discussed and thought worthy of adopting 24/7 5. Near the junction of Park Terrace and Station Road, the isolated bus stop in the grass verge was noted together with signage that was inaccurate, the cycle route and need for road surfacing.
6. In the park there is no welcoming signage at either end of the park and the obvious through routes for school children from the south side of the village were muddy and flooded particularly at the entrance. Old signage requires renewal. 7. Dangerous narrow pavements, lack of sitting areas on Main Street, proliferation of refuse bins, lack of bicycle racks. Signage from bus stops, traffic congestion, barriers and parking were of course also discussed at length. Upgrading the square adjacent to the Trust Offices in 24 Main Street and the possibility of a toilet facility at the bus stop opposite the cemetery was also considered. Many of the items above involve little or no cost, requiring only notification to relevant authorities. This has been done, but villagers can assist by communicating constructive comments to their Councillor, MP, MSP, Highways Department, Network Rail, First Bus, etc David F R Hastings, Lisa Morton and Linda Anderson

Children’s Book Reviews By Carla
A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens Last year, the film based on Charles Dickens’ book ‘A Christmas Carol’ was shown in the cinemas in 3D. It was very popular, but, as is almost always the case, the book is far far better. I really enjoyed it!
The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe by CS Lewis Almost everyone has heard of the Chronicles of Narnia by CS Lewis. There are seven books, the third of which is The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.
Scrooge is the main character, a mean and unpleasant personage.... His catchphrase would be ‘Bah, Humbug!’. When his nephew comes to wish him merry Christmas, he says ‘‘If I could work my will, every idiot who goes about with ‘Merry Christmas’ on his lips, should be boiled with his own pudding, and buried with a stake of holly through his heart. He should!’’
It’s about four children, Peter, Susan, Edmund and Lucy who are evacuated during the second world war. In the big country home in one of the spare rooms, Lucy - the youngest finds a wooden wardrobe. As she was playing hide and seek with the others, she goes in to hide. She pushes through the coats to the back, but finding no back she goes further.... into a snow covered forest! She meets a fawn, half goat half man, called Mr. Tummnus. The forest, it seemed, was a bit of Narnia... the strange magical land created by a lion! He takes her for a cup of tea.... laced with sleeping draught. She notices something is wrong and he admits he was working for the White Witch, the evil witch that made it forever winter, and banned Christmas! He wasn’t working voluntarily but working for his life. Lucy goes back through the wardrobe after a hurried goodbye. She comes back through, but none of her siblings believes her. Until Edmund follows her to the wardrobe and finds out for himself..... and meets the White Witch.
His dead partner, Marley, came back for a period of time and haunted Scrooge and quite terrified him. Then the ghost of the Christmas Past, the ghost of the Christmas Present and the ghost of the Christmas to Come came to visit Scrooge as well! They show him what he’s done in the past, how unpleasant he was. They show him what people are saying about him and his unpleasantness. They show him what might happen..... At the end of a terrifying ordeal (for Scrooge- the ghosts quite enjoyed themselves!) he’s a changed man..... Charles Dickens writes in a way that directly relates to any reader. It’s quite old-fashioned language, but really engaging. Someone who has never read Dickens should start with ‘A Christmas Carol’. It’s a funny story and easy to read - compared to others he’s written.
Carla is 12 years old and lives in Kirknewton

My favourite book in the series is the first one, ‘The Magician’s Nephew’. ‘The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe’ isn’t the best, I don’t think anyone should just pass it by though, as the story is really nice. Only the last one is terrible, it’s got the feeling that CS Lewis just continued the story for too long, and it’s scrappily written.
