LOCAL PEOPLE
John Richardson is the mastermind behind Linlithgow’s much talked about Party at the Palace. He tells me where the idea came from, how he brought it to life and why it had to be Linlithgow... “I’ve always worked in the music industry, mostly with artists in studios. In 2013 I was going round some of the UK festivals with a young singer new to the scene. The Isle of Wight Festival in particular really impressed me; there was a real feeling of community spirit. Locals were selling barbecue food, drinks, ice creams from their gardens – really getting behind it. It made me wonder if it would be possible to do something like this in Linlithgow.” John’s journey to make his vision a reality was far from easy. But together with a friend who worked in events, a bit of persistence and a lot of determination, in early 2014 it eventually all came together. “The first conversation was with Historic Scotland. Although they liked the idea, it was an event they’d never encountered here at the Palace before. But we overcame all the issues, and were able to go ahead. “There were plenty of things to learn from that first year though; the bars in particular were a let down, the food and the toilets too – but on the plus side, the bands were great! It was a huge disappointment for it not to be the success I’d hoped it would be, and I found it difficult to show face for a while afterwards.

“But despite the issues in year one, I wanted to make sure that the people in the town who had believed in the event got what they wanted and also to prove a few doubters wrong. So we took all the feedback on board, dusted ourselves off and went ahead with year two. “2015 was different in every way and we made it into a success, especially with Nile Rogers headlining. We still had issues with the site at the Peel, so for 2016 we opted to move the event to the other side of the Loch, so we could keep the event here in Linlithgow. Some people weren’t happy about it initially but it was the best solution. Being on the new site meant more lessons to learn so expect big improvements again this year!” So what does it mean to John to have the event here in Linlithgow? “It means a lot of extra pressure. If you get it wrong, it’s hard to dodge the flak. I’ve lived here for 10 years now and it’s a great place to live, to bring up the kids. To have been able to bring some great bands like Travis and The Proclaimers to Linlithgow is something the whole town should be proud of as it’s the images of the town itself which helps sell the event to the bands.” The local people column is contributed by Louise Taylor. Louise lives in Linlithgow and as well as writing, she likes running and researching family history.

HOME IMPROVEMENT
We spend a third of our lives in the bedroom yet, for many of us, it receives less love and attention than other rooms in the home. It’s time for a change, so here’s the Konect guide to making your bedroom a sanctuary you’ll never want to leave. The central point of any bedroom is the bed. A good night’s sleep is essential to our health and wellbeing and if you’re feeling like a zombie during your waking hours your first investment should be a new bed and mattress. There are various types of mattresses available such as pocket sprung, coil sprung and memory foam and if you suffer from back problems you may want to try out an adjustable bed designed to adapt to your best sleeping position. When choosing your new bed, take the time to try various ones out in the shop first. It’s better to be a little self-conscious for a short while than regret your purchase for years to come. As long as you don’t ask the shop owner to set an alarm for you, take all the time you need; about twenty minutes for a good lie down - with your partner…but without the passion - is about right. Another consideration is the style as you’ll probably want your new bed and furniture to fit the look of your room. So, what’s hot right now in terms of bedroom décor? Bedroom design trends are heavily influenced by our travels. Quirky boutique hotels are paving the way and many are drawing their influences from the mid-twentieth century. 1960’s and 70’s-style Italian influenced bedroom furniture is making a big comeback. Think minimal-style wardrobes, chests of
drawers and bedside tables in light wood or bearing names like Rimini, Valencia or Azzurri to steer you on the right track. However, this resurgence in nostalgia doesn’t mean that dark woods such as walnut are out. And, there’s always space for some long-lasting hard-wearing pine if you prefer the stripped-back country look. Fitted wardrobes are also a real bonus in a bedroom as they can give you up to one-third more space than a free-standing wardrobe. A good joiner can design your fitted wardrobes around your lifestyle which means built-in shoe racks, the right amount of hanging space and shelves to suit, plus, the exterior finish can be created to match the exact style of bedroom you want to achieve. Boutique hotels have also given us another recent trend – making better use of the en-suite. Once just a functional afterthought, the en-suite can deliver a real wow-factor with walk-in rainfall-showers or wetrooms to take your bedroom to the next level. And, if you have a decent sized-bedroom but a small en-suite why not have a free-standing bath in the bedroom itself? The idea splits opinion, but imagine relaxing in a warm bath with a glass of wine and a good book in the comfort and privacy of your own bedroom before retiring for the night. Now that’s what dreams are made of!

Now you have the perfect bedroom, here are some tips to help you get a really good night’s sleep. SWITCH OFF THE BLUE LIGHTS TV’s, smartphones and other gadgets emit a blue light which can disrupt your sleep. Instead, switch them off at least an hour before bedtime and tune into some relaxing music or a good book. COLOUR SCHEMES Some colours are designed to stimulate and others to help you relax. Yellows are great for a creative workplace but not for a bedroom. Bedroom walls in muted greys are not only fashionable, but will help you relax too. KEEP COOL Your body temperature naturally drops as you become tired so keeping your bedroom cool will help the process. A bedroom fan or ceiling fan can also help mask traffic and other sounds from outside. DIM IT DOWN Dimmable wall lights above your bed have a dual purpose. They replace bedside lamps which will save space and they can be turned down as you get ready for bed to speed up the production of melatonin, the body’s natural sleep-hormone. If it’s still too light, invest in some heavy curtains or blackout blinds to stop the glare from streetlamps. If all else fails, buy a good-quality sleep mask. Custom-built fitted wardrobes make the most of the space.

GARDENING PROJECT
August colour is often overlooked in the garden in the rush to get plants with spring colour. Now that early flowering plants have finished it is time to squeeze in some late summer and autumn interest. Sunshine yellows add cheer with Anthemis Wargrave Variety and Helenium Kanaria. Rudbeckia Speciosa and Leucanthemum Becky and Snow Lady also brighten up the greenery in August. These are all variations of the traditional daisy form of flower. Sedums are another worthy plant having both late summer and autumnal interest. Their flowers are adored by bees and they add structure to the garden through the autumn. For those with shady areas to plant, Aster Divericatus is unbeatable with dark stems and clusters of white flowers. Also happy in the shade, Astilbes flower in purple (Pumilla), pink (Bronce

Elegans) and white (Deutchland)and have stunning foliage which helps reduce weeding. For the shrub lovers Hydrangea Boquet Rose and Annabelle are reliable performers. If your perennial violas are looking a little stretched now is the time to cut them back to 5cm of foliage and give them a feed and you should get a renewed burst of colour. A real late summer favourite is Phlox Fujiyama. Fragrant clusters of white flowers that continue well into Autumn and are great for pollinators and for use as cut flowers. This variety is strong stemmed and mildew resistant.

PROPERTY MATTERS
This simply does not happen with those agents whose office occupies a secondary location or operate from a ‘call centre’ who expect the internet to do all the hard work!
We often hear about the importance of location, location, location when choosing a new home. However, many people overlook the importance of location when choosing their estate agent! Despite the fact that many agencies appear to offer the same service, there are many different styles of agency, each of which has their own distinctive feel. A major contribution to an agent’s ability to provide its clients with the best possible service is where the offices are actually situated. A recent survey of over 1600 home-sellers identified that the location of the office was the third most important factor in the choice of agent. (First was a personal referral, and second was the fact that the homeowner liked the staff). In fact nearly 17% of vendors would only choose an agent who is situated in a prominent high street location. Whilst one could argue that the internet has changed the face of agency, it is often an agent’s prominent location that enables them to sell increasing volumes of property. This is not only because out-of-town buyers naturally gravitate to the town centre, but also because when people walk into a professional office, they are generally greeted with warmth and enthusiasm and their requirements should be discussed and fully understood. Agents are then 22 | KONECT LINLITHGOW
often able to take them out to view properties within minutes of registering. This simply does not happen with those agents whose office occupies a secondary location or operate from a ‘call centre’ who expect the internet to do all the hard work! Technology has freed up more time for full service agents to deliver the results-driven and customer focussed service that clients expect but services such as handling an ‘off market’ house sale or skilfully negotiating a complex offer can’t happen remotely or online. So why not drop in to your local Estate Agent’s office for a chat the next time you’re passing because generally speaking, most things are better in real life! The monthly Property Matters column is contributed by Craig Turpie. Craig is a director at Turpie & Co Estate Agents and Letting Agents with extensive knowledge of the West Lothian Property Market and over 20 years experience in bespoke sales and marketing.

VET’S TIP
Right at the moment, podgy pets are on the minds of the vets here at West Port. That’s not because we’ve seen a sudden surge of overweight pets – sadly there’s just an ongoing steady increase in the number we see carrying excess pounds. But pet food company Hills is currently running a pet slimming competition which involves the animal in question checking in to be weighed every two to four weeks and being given extra advice if needed. We’re asking our clients if they’d like to enter if their pet is on the chubby side as it’s a bit of an incentive – especially those “before” and “after” pics! - to tackle an extremely important issue. Your pet is at risk of a host of health problems if they are overweight – much like humans, this includes diabetes, heart disease, cancer and high CATS PROTECTION WEST LOTHIAN

blood pressure. Overweight dogs can also struggle to cool themselves down effectively, a serious issue at this time of year. With so many more dogs, cats and even rabbits too heavy for their own good our perception of what’s a normal healthy weight can get a bit skewed, making it a difficult problem to recognise – but if you can’t see your pet’s ribs easily, their waist from above and their stomach isn’t tucked in looking from the side, they might well have an issue. HEALTH & BEAUTY
Thanks to Wilbur Atwater, a 19th century scientist, we are aware of the energy i.e. calories, that different foods contain; and that if you eat too many you will gain weight. It seems simple enough, but it’s not the whole picture – not even close. People around us mostly seem to be ‘fine’ and perhaps we thought, as we grew towards adulthood, that we would arrive at a completely ‘sorted’ state of being. And yet it doesn’t feel quite so straightforward. From our young lives we may have brought ‘patterns’ or habits - of thinking or behaving which we’re just not happy with. Perhaps the challenges and responsibilities of life leave us a bit stumped and we react to situations, rather than feeling we’re really making conscious choices. This is all entirely normal and we’re all actually in the same boat. So, perhaps we need a compassionate and clear-thinking Captain? We each already have an ‘Observing Self’ - a more objective and aware part of us which can notice our thinking and our feeling. Herein lies the key to our freedom to change. Next time a pattern pops up which you’d like to change, pause as early as you can, take a conscious breath ... and breathe out slowly. Listen to your Captain’s guidance and take a new path - whether this be purposefully thinking, doing or saying something different. After all, who’s in charge in there? This column is contributed by Rosanna Veitch. “I have worked as a counsellor for 30 years and am delighted to have been asked to write a little column here. I see clients of all ages and with all forms of emotional distress in my peaceful therapy room at my home. Please feel free to call for a chat. Everyone is welcome, and I'm happy to adjust my fee if money is tight.” www.effectivecounsellingedinburgh.com

Your body, unlike a calorimetre, is host to a complex biological system and it works hard to keep you in a set weight range by regulating your appetite and metabolism through your hormones, genes, gut and brain. The flaw in the argument of counting calories to lose weight is that your body doesn’t treat all calories in the same way. High-quality calories from foods rich in nutrients such as broccoli, leafy greens, avocados, nuts, chicken and eggs will fill you up and keep you full for longer. In contrast, processed foods, added sugar, and refined grains cause energy slumps, sugar cravings, and prompt your body to store fat. The bottom line is: when you eat healthy foods, you don’t have to count calories. If you feed your body what it needs, it’ll take care of the rest, including keeping you at a healthy weight. So next time you catch yourself counting calories/checks/ syns think again and count nutrition. You’ll feel better and your body will thank you. MUSIC REVIEW
The plan this month was to review Jay Z’s new album “4:44”, but, perhaps mercifully, this is not fully available on any service I subscribe to, so I had to content myself with one of the lead tracks “The Story Of OJ”. Massively provocative in its confrontation of racist classifications, this is arguably impossible to comprehend outside of the US. Combined with a video which shreds the shameful animation practises of the thirties, the lecture from a 47 year old multi-millionaire complaining about subjugation comes into sharper focus. Nice big plate of cake you have there though Jay Z; I see you are simultaneously eating it. At the opposite end of any conceivable scale, Public Service Broadcasting retreat from the retro futurism of “The Race For Space” and apply their strategy of juxtaposing voice snippets from archive sources with melodic electronica to the story of the Welsh coal mining industry in “Every Valley”. The melodious
to Back work :)
tones of Richard Burton handling purple prose “The arrogant strut of the Lords of the coalface”, mingle with patronising plummy voiced BBC announcers “The people will always need coal” and, ultimately, the melancholy sounds of the residents of towns without industry “the pubs would be full on Fridays”. The project has a difficulty in that the majority of the music remains firmly within band’s established template, and there is little sense that the voices and stories have little more than a general relation to the mood of each track. In looking to progress from musically commenting on general exploration to a more specific location and industry, the opportunity to more fully mine the seam has been missed. The monthly music review is contributed by James Kerr. James presents the Regal Music Club show on Regal Radio (www.regal-radio.net) and is a member of the local band ‘Snakeskin Shoe Review’.

The daily lunch-box routine can quickly become a dreaded task that you do late at night with your eyes propped open as you rummage in the fridge for something to make the kids’ lunch box with – only to find out next day that they didn’t eat it anyway and it comes back a squishy mess at the bottom of the school bag. But it doesn’t have to be like that! Here, our food writer Anne Pinkerton gives some simple ideas to make the daily lunch-box routine easier – and healthier! There are lots of ideas online for things you could cook with your children so they are involved with their diet from the shop to their plate. If you cook a batch of Cornish pasties or sausage rolls together at home they can be frozen and eaten over the month. The BBC Good Food site is a good first stop if you need inspiration. What you are aiming at is a well-balanced and varying picnic every day of the school year! If you just buy processed snacks as the base, it’s very easy to give children too much salt and excessive amounts of sugar. So you are giving your kids the best chance if you control what’s in the food they eat. The NHS outlines what a health lunch box should contain. You need:

1. A base of starchy carbohydrates: bread, pasta, rice or spuds 2. Protein: beans, lentils, peas, egg, fish, meat or cheese 3. A sugar-free drink, water or milk for younger children 4. A side dish: low-fat yogurt and fruit or fruit bread
KEEP IT FUN: Pinwheel Sandwiches! When my kids went to high school and both we parents were working I did a deal. I would make sure there were always ingredients for packed lunch but the kids had to make what they wanted from what was available. They made wraps, filled brown rolls, made samosas and filled pita breads. Now and then we cooked a bacon tart or made humus. They even took to my favourite sandwich: chopped date, cheddar, watercress and banana. But not often! BLT, tuna, egg and cream cheese, avocado and bacon or even cold cooked bangers were more common. Carrot sticks, cherry tomatoes, cucumber sticks, radishes, easy peeler satsumas, small apples, grapes or a banana were included to give fresh veg and fibre. My lot would never eat celery, but that is a family story too far… Most schools now require you to avoid peanut butter sandwiches or any nut snacks for the sake of children with allergies. For primary school kids keep it interesting – for variety, use mini wraps, plain bagels, cut bread different shapes, use one slice white and one slice wholemeal to wean them off white bread. Cold pasta salads are ideal – make a little extra of your rice or pasta evening meal to use for the lunchboxes the next day - remember to put in a plastic spoon. Thread small chunks of fruit and veg on skewers. And the more you can get them involved, helping and choosing, the more likely they are to eat it - even if that means some odd combinations of sandwich fillings! It’s still better than processed packaged snacks. For the “side dish” treat, replace crisps or chocolate bars with a little homebaking if you can, or something like fruit loaf, plain popcorn, a small tub of fruit in juice, plain yoghurt with fruit on the side. The NHS has an app called “Be Food Smart” which allows you to simply scan bar codes on
STREET FOOD: Spanish Omelette food packaging and show you how much sugar, fat and salt is in it. Expressed in sugar lumps, it’s sometimes sobering to see just how much sugar is in something. Fruit drinks and muesli bars and other seemingly good food you might use for lunch boxes are stuffed with sugar. www.nhs.uk/change4life-beta/be-food-smart Street food from all over the world can inspire you with new ideas when lunch is in a rut. Easy to eat with fingers is the only criteria. Skewers of fruit or meat, dips made from beans, pakora, filo pies, sushi, roulades or Spanish omelette can be great lunch box food.
SPANISH OMELETTE METHOD: Sweat the onions till golden in the oil. Add the raw sliced potatoes, turn over and mix well with the onions. Cover the pan with a lid and cook on medium heat checking and turning over every 5 minutes till the potatoes are cooked. Add any of the variations you fancy at this point. Cook for 2-3 minutes covered and then add the eggs. Muddle them in all over the pan and cook , covered, till the egg is set. About 5 more minutes. Extra variations: Bacon cubes, sliced chorizo or other sausage or salami, grated hard cheese, spinach, peas, salmon mis-shapes, smoked mackerel, small pieces of cooked chicken breast or leftovers from a roast bird. Perfect sliced cold for the lunch box! The monthly recipe and food notes are contributed by Anne Pinkerton. Anne is a local cook who believes that everybody can enjoy seasonal food and take pleasure in preparing meals for their friends and family. KONECT LINLITHGOW | 31
WALK
e h t m o r f w e i AV
CRAG
STRAIGHT THERE AND BACK = 7km / 4.5 miles
| CIRCULAR ROUTE = 8.5km / 5.3 miles
Binny Craig near Uphall is a geologically important landmark in West Lothian and, although a modest 220 metres (721ft) high, the views from the top are anything but. Binny Craig has two faces, a rock face enjoyed by climbers and a gentler, grassy face appreciated by walkers. It is a great example of a crag-and-tail feature, the legacy of glacier movement during the Ice Age.
This walk feature was written by Yvonne MacMillan. First printed in Konect Bathgate edition, June 2015. 32 | KONECT LINLITHGOW
We started this walk from Uphall Station railway station where we left the car. Coming out of the station, turn right to follow the road downhill to Uphall, before crossing the road near the mini roundabout by the entrance to Houston House and heading up Forkneuk Road. We turn left, follow the road round to the right, go left, then right again through houses and a farm track stretches ahead. Here there’s a signpost for Binny Craig and, right on cue, the crag is dead ahead. With the traffic noise thankfully behind us, it feels as if we’ve stepped Narnia-like into another world of wide open spaces and rolling, fertile farmland. The route towards the crag is straightforward and well-signposted. We leave the farm track and a path leads to a well-constructed bridge over a stream where a considerately placed bench is situated. Our goal is still in sight as we follow the public footpath bordering a field. Binny Craig’s trig point is visible too. The ground is rising now as we walk up a grassy track by the side of a building onto a tarmac road, walk uphill for a few paces till another signpost directs us, via a couple of sturdy gates, onto a path between fields, new livestock-proof fencing
on either side. A bit of an effort is needed as we climb up rough stone steps (approx. 60) between mixed woodland and a gorse-filled hillside. Then two more sturdy gates to negotiate and a last effort up the grassy slope to the top of Binny Craig. The panoramic views are wonderful and well worth our exertions. We catch our breath and sit for half an hour enjoying the features in the landscape. The Ochil hills across the River Forth’s floodplain, the magnificent Forth bridges, Edinburgh and, on a clear day like today, the hazy shapes of Berwick Law and the Bass Rock. Closer to home, the Pentlands frame the Almond Valley spread below. A great place to see where you live in 3D! You can return the way you came or if you prefer a longer, circular walk, return by way of Ecclesmachan. Once back on the tarmac road, turn left and follow this road to the village, turn right at the junction which will take you back to Uphall. To make a shorter walk you could park and start in St Andrew’s Drive, Uphall and walk along Strathbrock Place to join Forkneuk Road to commence the walk as above.

VISIT WEST LOTHIAN
WHAT’S ON
CANAL FUN DAY
Sunday 20th August 2017 Before you know it schools will be resuming and so make sure you don’t miss out on the spectacular events being held this August! There is so much to see and do, so get out and experience all that West Lothian has to offer.
The Fun Day this year will follow the tried, tested and ‘Fun’ formula. That of course means that the sun will be out and the only wetness involved will be from the canal during the Cardboard Boat Race.
Enjoy an outing to some of West Lothian’s favourite family attractions. Learn about den building and outdoor adventures at Almond Valley Heritage Centre, meet a wonderful array of animals at Five Sisters Zoo, or find out about owls from all over the world at The Scottish Owl Centre!
The event this year is being opened by Provost Jim Carlin, and the fun starts at 1:00pm. The venue for this great annual event is Linlithgow Canal Centre and its immediate surroundings. There will be a variety of stalls in Learmonth Gardens: local and national charities, the Art Club exhibiting their work, a Punch and Judy show for the younger visitors, along with face painting and musical entertainment provided by members of the Linlithgow Folk Festival Association.
If the sun isn’t shining, don’t fret – there is always something to do indoors. Take the kids to Howden Park Centre and enjoy the delights of FUNBOX – Underwater Adventure on the 5th & 6th August, dress as a mermaid or go as a fish – you’ll have a whale of a time! It’s also festival time again, so go grab those camping chairs, hunt out your wellies and get your groove on, as it’s time again for Party at the Palace! Situated on the far side of Linlithgow Loch overlooking the iconic Palace, the family friendly festival will take place on the 12th and 13th of August. With last year’s event being a massive hit, this year is set to top it all, with acts such as the Kaiser Chiefs, Amy MacDonald & Razorlight,. It’s going to be a good one, so make sure you get those tickets!! For more information, or the latest on all the great things to see and do in West Lothian please visit:

Short canal boat trips will be available throughout most of the afternoon, along with a free ferry taking visitors from one side of the basin to the other. There will be a Water Safety demonstration by International Rescue Corps, who also provide safety cover for the event. Throughout the afternoon light refreshments will be available in the Tea Room, plus a Barbecue, an ice cream seller on the Learmonth Gardens side, and ice creams and soft drinks also on sale beside the Tea Room.
ENTRANTS NEEDED FOR THE CARDBOARD BOAT RACE! Great fun for participants and spectators alike, the main event and highlight of the afternoon is the Cardboard Boat Race. Of course, the participants want to stay dry and complete the course in record time, but many spectators enjoy it more when boats and crews sink in spectacular fashion. It is after all a “Fun Day”. Entries are always welcome - download your application for now from www.lucs.org.uk/canal-fun-day/
PARENTS IN WEST LOTHIAN
...Ensure Quality Time With Your Child After Being Dissed By A Nonchalant Llama Something that I never realised about having 2 children and opposite shifts from my hubby, is that for the majority of the time I have both kids with me all the time, meaning not much one-onone time with anyone. However, last week a great opportunity presented itself to have some exclusive Mummy and Quinton time – the Bankton Nursery day out! The destination was East Links Farm Park – I’d never been before but as we waited to board the 4 coaches that would take us there, there was a definite air of excitement among my fellow passengers. It took little more than an hour to get to the Farm Park which is near Dunbar and although I’d love to describe the scenic journey and breathtaking environs I’d be making it up as I fell asleep approximately 2 minutes into the journey while Quinn gazed out of the window beside me. Upon arriving we somewhat predictably headed straight for the trampolines. After a hearty bounce we moved onto the huge fortress playground, where I was made to struggle up the netted walkway about 3 storeys high, and career down a large and undulating chute. From there Quinn raced to find the next thing to grab his attention and his feverish little brain was bombarded with choice – the Big Jelly Bean trampoline, the shrill hoooooot of the mini-train pulling into the station, the softplay, the huge logswing, animals everywhere around … Quinn settled on the downhill sledging – you take a plastic sledge up a slope then slide down on a fakesnow surface – something which Quinn seemed to master astonishingly well before then attempting to walk back up the sledging surface into the face of oncoming sledge traffic …
After emerging relatively unharmed from the kind of multi-sledge-pile-up usually only witnessed in Inuit communities, Quinn passed a pleasant half hour in the soft-play. We had an animal-food token burning a hole in our pocket so we filled our orange cup with hay pellets and hopped aboard the mini train. As we chugged into various fields we were rushed by excitable flocks of sheep, ambushed by herds of goats, paid mild interest by a couple of donkeys, and glanced at sideways by a proud-looking llama who spurned our culinary handouts. With our time at the farm park drawing to a close, we sought out the sandpit area where underground tunnels led children to a hidden play area. Rather too well hidden it seems, as a few minutes after Quinn entered the tunnel, I lost him – he seemed to have evaporated! After alerting park security and running around the place for a frantic 10 minutes, I found him once again in the sandpit tunnel. Typical. We ran out to the bus and made it on – my heart rate returning to normal in time for us to fall asleep together for the return journey. Now that’s ideal Quinn and Mummy time. The monthly Parenting column is contributed by Nicola Jengaenga. Nicola lives in West Lothian with her two pre-schoolers and hubby Channa. They juggle hectic work schedules with the everevolving demands of their two tiny overlords and also squeezing in time for each other! KONECT LINLITHGOW | 35
