With thoughts turning to the summer at last, we've put together a guide to help you get fit and in shape for the season. We were very impressed with the huge range of services available locally, and the feature is packed with tips and local businesses to help you get into shape and feel good.

Message from the Editor

We've teamed up with Norton House Health Club in Ingliston to run a fantastic competition as part of this feature. You could win one month's family membership and a spa day for two! Every entrant will receive a complimentary day pass for two, so well worth entering! In addition, they are offering an exclusive joining offer for konect readers, see pages 20 - 21 for details of the joining offer and competition. The cover is from last year's Bing Blazer – see page 15 for details of this year's event. A big thank you to everyone who entered our reader survey from the April issue. We loved reading all the positive comments and also your ideas for what should be included in konect. We are collating the responses and will be focusing on your suggestions in upcoming issues.

What Do Tarot Readers Do? by Bernie Rowen CG Jung coined the phrase “synchronicity”; this has meant many different things to different people. The actual meaning according to Jung is ‘synchronicities are meaningful coincidence’. When a tarot reader sees a card in a particular placement in a reading s/he would translate the symbolism depicted in the card and put it into the context of the client’s life. When the client draws the cards, contemplating their question, the moment in time that this takes place carries information, as universal consciousness is available to be tapped into. It is understood by academics and mystics alike that the symbolism of tarot has evolved and that it doesn’t have a clear cut history as to how it has come to be the card system that it is today.

When you consult a reader it is a very good idea to have a clear question in mind; the cards might show that a different area of your life requires your attention. To learn more give Bernie a call to make an appointment on 07736 067227. Bernie Rowen is a registered psychotherapist with many a modality under her belt. She brings a fresh idea to counseling and talking therapy by the inclusion of astrology data to develop the most individual treatment possible, so why not invest in yourself?

Get in Shape for the Summer Your Local Guide to Health and Fitness The weather is improving, summer holidays booked for the lucky ones who are getting away, layers of thick cover-up clothing coming off... it's a good time to be thinking about getting fit and losing a bit of excess weight. In fact it's always a good time to think about improving fitness, so the konect team have been speaking to a lot of people involved in the fitness industry locally to pull together some ideas for you. Humans are complicated and there is no such thing as one solution that suits everyone. But we've come up with an astounding variety of options all available in the local area, and regardless of your current fitness level, age, interests and time you have available, you'll be able to find something to suit you. From gentle walking with a group through to serious fitness training such as Crossfit Bathgate, there is a huge range of activities that you can do in a group or individually. Martial arts for adults and children (you may have seen Kuk Sool Won demonstrations in the Centre at Livingston or in Bathgate for example), dance classes, cycling, swimming, even wrestling - an energetic new Livingston-based company Reckless Intent aims to “help bring back a respectable wrestling scene to West Lothian... and offer opportunities that enable people to be involved in something positive and to help them develop skills needed in everyday life.” We've spoken to personal trainers, specialists in post-surgery fitness, local nutritionist Edyta who has provided a healthy recipe this month too. The Clubs and Classes section at the back of konect each month is always a good source of ideas for joining a fitness class or taking up a new skill that involves physical activity.

The following are a few fun suggestions to help get you started, but always take the advice of the health and fitness professionals represented in this feature. 1 Fitness is a habit If you approach each task everyday with a view to how it can improve your fitness you'll be amazed at how, for example, not being able to find a parking space near the shop or venue you want becomes a positive thing, not a problem! Yay, I get to walk an extra 250 metres! Might even have to run if I'm a bit late too! Take the stairs not the lift – often repeated but actually true and you'll be surprised how it can change your attitude. 2 Will power is limited ... ... and let's face it, losing weight does require willpower, be it to get to your exercise class or to change your eating habits. So if you're dealing with other stresses in life that are taking up your reserves of selfcontrol and endurance, you'll find it harder to resist over-eating or skipping your class when you're tired. View your fitness time as time-out for you from your other stresses, not just another chore that you have to fit in. And it is easier to resist junk food when you're just back from a work-out and feeling good, rather than at home feeling overwhelmed and consoling yourself with a sweet treat. 3 Morning light helps you lose weight! No this isn't a joke... a recent study shows that people exposed to natural light in the morning are leaner than those exposed to light later in the day. And it has nothing to do with physical activity, calorie intake, age or season! It has to do with body clock and metabolism - as I said above, humans are complicated but if you're looking to lose weight and need all the help you can get, get outside in the natural light in the morning. 4 Calories eaten < calories expended = beach figure If only it were that simple. Cutting calories is an effective way to lose weight, but it has to be done in a sensible and healthy way and ideally in conjunction with regular exercise. You can't go too wrong with eating plenty of fruit and veg (the new recommendation is 7 portions a day) and cutting down on the cakes and biscuits.

TNESS SPECIAL * FITNESS SPECIAL * FITNESS SPECIAL * FITNESS SPECIAL * FITNESS SPECIAL * FITNESS SPECIAL * FITNESS S Grapefruit juice is a great appetite suppressant – take it like medicine in the morning to stave off the sweet cravings. Use smaller plates/bowls to reduce your serving size, or give yourself a rule of “no seconds.” Be sensible – going without food completely is not a healthy choice, neither is crash dieting! Consulting a nutritionist is well worth it even if you only need to make small changes to your diet as they can devise a diet that is sustainable and enjoyable for you. 5 Getting children involved early in sport sets up good habits for life, and, as for adults, there is something to suit all tastes locally. Martial arts classes are a popular choice - Kuk Sool Won is a very friendly group with a large children's section called the “Wee Warriors” and many families have parents and children attending classes. Astro Gymnastics in Livingston start off with a pre-school programme called “Shooting Stars.” And of course there is always the excellent skate park and BMX tracks. We hope this feature encourages and inspires you to make some positive changes. There really is something for everyone, so whatever your goals, look through these pages and you will find something to suit you. Even one small change is better than nothing at all. So there is no excuse!

Burn 500 Calories 1 2

Six hours of kissing - bring chapstick! Eating burns 100 calories and hour – eat for 5 hours and burn 500 calories – might be counterproductive though! 3 Do 2 1/4 hours of shopping - as if you needed another reason to shop 4 2 hours 10 minutes of guitar playing (standing) and you will turn into a rock star 5 Punish a punching bag for 70 minutes - think of someone who annoys you and get swinging 6 Golf for 1 1/2 hours - only counts if you walk and carry your own clubs 7 Play with the kids for 90 minutes - will tire them out and the wee one's will love it 8 Give someone a 2 hour long massage - make sure they return the favour 9 2 hours and 20 minutes of general housework and your home will be gleaming 10 7.25 hours of laying quiet and still - deserved to make the list just to put things into perspective

Reckless Intent Reckless Intent aims to bring back a respectable wrestling scene to West Lothian. In early 2013 they opened their new training facility in Livingston equipped with a gym and wrestling ring which all trainees have full access to regularly. They have spent the last year working and training their own talent and have been gaining experience by putting on live performances for family and friends. They aim to present hard hitting, high flying, fast paced action from some of the very best athletes and performers in Scotland as well as showcasing their own talent from the Reckless Intent Wrestling School, as well as offering opportunities for people to be involved in something positive and to help them develop skills needed in everyday life : discipline, sportsmanship and self-confidence. Reckless Intent Entertainment wants to continue to work with charities and help give something back to the community. Last year at Party in the Park 2013 they presented a representative from SSAFA with a cheque for £200, and have also held fundraising events for Sick Kids and The Playback Trust.

Konect with exercise by Michael Smith, Personal Best, Armadale Exercise is good for us, but with so many different ways to exercise it’s hard to know which is best. Michael Smith, an exercise professional from Personal Best in Armadale, reviews High Intenisty Interval Training (HIIT) and why the fitness industry is going crazy for it. If you want to spend less time exercising, reduce body fat, promote muscle tone and have a session that can be adapted specifically for individuals then HIIT may be exactly what you are looking for! Less time exercising and great results – HIIT is designed to be quick. Short sessions and efficient workouts that are perfect for busy people. Less body fat – Accelerating and decelerating during exercising burns lots of calories. The change of pace not only keeps exercise fresh, but the additional calories burned benefit reducing body fat. As well as burning more calories HIIT releases hormones that target body fat.

The combination of cortisol and growth hormone produced during HIIT targets body fat as an energy source. More fat used, less fat stored. Specific to you – HIIT does not need to be top speed. It can be adapted to any individual by changing the work/ rest duration and intensity. Exercises can also be adapted for injuries and health conditions. It does not need to be high impact; it does not need to use your whole body it can be tailored around your needs by an exercise professional. Value for money – Shorter time means reduced prices such as the Personal Best Insanity package. We always recommend you seek the advice of an exercise professional, before taking on a new exercise regime, especially if you have specific injuries or health conditions. For more information on HIIT training contact Mikey on Michael@personalbestuk.com.

Spotlight on

Edyta B Nutrition We need food. Food comes in all shapes sizes and tastes, but what should we be eating? What if the healthy choice for one person is unhealthy for another? First and foremost everybody is different. We are different weights, shapes, ages, health levels and are at different stages of life. So why do we all try to follow the same diet plans? We need to get specific. Decide what your goal is. Measure what you want to change and then make a change. Set a goal – You need to decide what you want from nutrition. List what you like - eating should be enjoyable. It gives us energy, tastes great and makes us feel good. If you are not enjoying what you eat then it’s not sustainable. Recipes can be adapted and most foods can be built

into a tailored meal plan. Measure it – If you plan to change body fat or body shape measure it. If you plan to improve health, measure it. Measure it so you know if it works. Please note that weight loss can be water, muscle, bone density and energy stores... not only fat. Get advice - If you don’t know what you should be doing then speaking with a nutrition professional can help to build you a plan and give you the direction for success. At Edyta B Nutrition we deliver specific and convenient nutrition plans which give you energy, taste great and get results. Chrisselle's Column

Play Your Cards Right By Chrisselle Mowatt As you all know, mental health is something that I’m extremely passionate about. So passionate in fact that I founded a support group for sufferers called Don’t Lose Your Grip. Last year we held some coffee mornings to help raise funds for SAMH (Scottish Association of Mental Health) and this year, we’re helping some friends do the same, but in a different way. A friend of mine from college and his family are holding a charity night in Craigshill Rugby Club this month to raise money for SAMH and hopefully raise awareness of mental health issues and suicide in the process. The event is casino themed and sure to be a huge success, with live music and casino fun for you to

enjoy, it’s a great night out for a wonderful cause. Don’t Lose Your Grip are proud to sponsor this event and would like to invite all of you to come and help us spread the awareness of mental health and raise some desperately needed funds for a wonderful and well deserving charity. Tickets are £5 and can be bought via myself at me@ chrisselle.com or from Duncan Taylor who can be contacted via this mobile number: 07815799626. The event is on Saturday the 10th of May and will be running from 7:30pm until late. As well as casino fun and live music, there will also be a pop up photo booth that you can enjoy which will be hosted by Duncan and I. We look forward to seeing you there!

How to Wear This Season's Printed Trousers By India Neckel

Black & white check trousers £42 at TopShop

Blue & white print trousers £22 at Next

Navy flower print trousers £14.99 at Matalan

Red Paisley print trousers £17.99 at New Look

The must-wear trousers this season, here's how to make them work for work, casual and a night out. Work: keep it plain top or blouse and blazer over the top. Casual: One way of never going wrong it to pick out one of the colours in the trousers and match that up to a little light-weight box jumper or plain top, and team it with a little pair of pumps. Night out: Nice pair of heels, again pick out a colour and stick to that for your shoes - that helps give the illusion of a longer leg. Pair with a plain bodice top or go adventurous with a clashing print. All trousers available at The Centre Livingston

Thought for the month

Taking in the Good By Tina Gilbert Rick Hanson, in his book “Hardwiring Happiness,” talks about the science of reshaping your brain to develop inner strengths needed for well-being, coping and success. He says the brain is the most important organ in your body and what happens to it is determined by what you think and feel, say and do. Rick talks about taking in the good a few times a day, a dozen seconds at a time and the more you do this the more it will naturally grow enabling you to feel more joy, calm and strength inside. Using the acronym HEAL: Have a positive experience and Enrich it. Absorb it. Link positive and negative

material so that positive soothes and even replaces negative. How do you do this? Each time something good happens, pause to feel it and let it drop in. For example, if you want to feel more gratitude, keep resting your mind on feeling thankful or appreciative. We are normally hardwired for a negative bias and so focusing on the positive and the many small positive things happening around us all the time can sensitise your brain to positive experiences so they become inner strengths more quickly and easily. When you learn the skills of taking in the good this can help you to see the good in yourself, in the world and in other people. We are often so self critical that spending time to grow the seeds of good in the brain and see the good in yourself must be worth it. Tina lives in Livingston and teaches yoga and meditation. Wheely good gadgets In many cases the gap between in-car equipment and tablet computers is beginning to blur. Take Pioneer’s terribly named AVH-X3500 DAB car radio, for example: it boasts a 6.1-inch touch screen, built-in Bluetooth, displays video and even runs apps. The Pioneer’s RRP is £479, but it’s already widely available for £299.

An option for kids’ entertainment in-car is a tablet. Cheaper tablets such as Tesco’s Hudl (£119), Google’s Nexus 7 (£199) or Apple’s iPad Mini (£249) make excellent video players, and they don’t suffer from the scratched discs or skipping that can plague in-car DVD systems. Expect to pay an additional £15 to £25 for a headrest mount.

If you’re thinking that a 6.1-inch screen sounds rather large for an If you find you have more gadgets than in-car device, you’re right: the Pioneer you have power sockets for, the good Tesco Hudl tablet is a double-DIN system, which means news is that just £7.99 will get you an it takes up twice as much space as a standard adapter that gives you two cigarette lighter car radio. Property Matters

Track Your Sale By Craig Turpie One of the greatest frustrations in the moving process can be poor communication. If you are buying or selling, we believe you’ll want to know exactly what progress is being made, immediately and with transparency. Not only that, but as we are fully accountable to you, you deserve to know what we are doing and how effectively we are working on your behalf! Our solution is a powerful online tracking service that provides you with access to every aspect of your sale, updated in real-time. For example you can log on to your dedicated page on our website and instantly see what marketing activity has been undertaken, who has viewed, what their comments on your property are, whether they will be coming back for a second viewing or thinking of submitting an offer. And what about when a sale has been agreed? In the past, trying to then get hold of your solicitor was seldom easy, with some clients

48 konect

even feeling guilty for interrupting their solicitor’s “important” work! We liaise with solicitors at every stage and ensure that as progress is made towards conclusion of missives, it is recorded online so that you have access to this information 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. All of this means that you are always fully up to speed with progress. It also makes it easier for us to spot and resolve any areas of potential delay before they occur! The internet age might have depersonalised many aspects of our lives. However, when so much hangs on the speed and efficiency of the sales and legal process, it’s good to know that on-line tracking is one use of technology that has certainly been harnessed for the better. Oh and by the way – we do still talk to our clients as well! It’s one of the most enjoyable parts of our job. So rest assured we’ll never allow the technology to stand in the way of that.

Music Review

The Regal Music Club by James Kerr

then this is still open to you. The occasional stodgy filler (“Your Sister Can’t Twist”) and an ill-judged cod-Jamaican vocal (“Jamaican Jerk-Off”) do little damage overall to what is probably the high-water mark of the John/Taupin partnership. Venturing onto disc two, the initial nine songs are a strange and half-hearted tribute whereby various current artists (and credit where due, not the most obvious) tackle a selection of tracks resulting in the all-time low of Fall Out Boy's unnecessary version of "Saturday Nights Alright For Fighting". The remainder of disc 2 is a high quality recording of Elton in concert in 1973, even if only four of the eight live songs relate to the album.

A monster double LP in lavishly illustrated gatefold sleeve on first release in October 1973, Elton John's ninth album "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" has hit its fortieth birthday with 2CD and mammoth 4CD/DVD versions.

To get the entire 1973 Hammersmith Odeon concert along with a pile of demos, B sides, early takes and documentary DVD you have to splash out for the "Super Deluxe" edition. Possibly only of interest if you have lived with the album for forty years, want an alternative path down the yellow brick road, and are prepared to say goodbye to about £40.

In the widely promoted 2CD version, the original 17 tracks fit comfortably onto one disc so if you want to stay true to the classic run from “Funeral to a Friend” through to “Harmony” and all stops in-between,

The Regal Music Club meets fortnightly on Wednesdays at the Regal Theatre, Bathgate, 7.30pm to 9.30pm. Visit https://www.facebook.com/RegalMusicClub for more info, or just drop in. £2 including refreshments.

Wednesday 7th May Diabetes UK May Meeting – speaker Professor Roy Taylor Diabetes and Low Calorie diets. Inveralmond Community High School, Willowbank, Livingston, EH54 6HN. The Diabetes UK West Lothian voluntary group are delighted to welcome Professor Roy Taylor to speak about his research into diabetes and low calorie diets. In 2011 Professor Taylor ran a research trial at Newcastle University testing whether a low-calorie liquid diet could put Type 2 diabetes into remission. He is now taking forward a further study to compare the long-term health effects of the current best-available Type 2 diabetes care with those of a low-calorie liquid diet followed by long-term weight control. This is a great opportunity to hear about this controversial research from

May Music

Toccata Ladies Choir Annual Concert Friday 16th & Saturday 17th May 7.30pm Howden Park Centre Livingston Tickets ÂŁ10 Our musical director, Eleanor Howat, being presented with the trophy at Bangor International Choral Festival.

Toccata" is a musical term derived from Italian meaning to touch or to stroke. The choir works hard to live up to its name in its performance: touching the heart and stirring the soul. The music is directed by Eleanor Howat, whose authoritative and inspirational conducting draws out exhilarating sounds from the choir. Toccata recently competed in the Bangor International Choir Festival, which was a fantastic experience. The choir sang superbly, were complimented on style and presentation and brought home the trophy for the Light Entertainment class. It is said that music is the universal language and Toccata hopes that, after listening to our music making, the audience would surely testify to that. There will be something for everyone, come along and join us! For more information go to www.toccataladieschoir.co.uk
