Hello neighbours We love producing the December issue of the Konect Directory – lots of seasonal graphics on the advertisements, great offers and ideas for readers and lots going on locally We’ve got a few features in this month. In addition to Yvonne’s local history story behind Almond Valley Viaduct, we’ve put together a local guide to Christmas – ideas for shopping, events and things to do all within the local community. Our Charity of the Month is the Mount Kilimanjaro Community First Aid project, a home-grown youth aid project that benefits both the Tanzanian youngsters and our own West Lothian youngsters who are involved. Congratulations to Maggie Storrar of Deans who won the crossword competition in the last issue, and to Mrs

A Victorian Vision

the Almond Valley Viaduct By Yvonne MacMillan

S

tar of paintings, countless photographs, West Lothian Council’s logo and a striking feature in the landscape for 170 years, Almond Valley Viaduct strides purposefully and majestically across the river valley and flood plain. The viaduct took 3 years to build (1839 – 1842) and formed part of the new Edinburgh to Glasgow railway line. The viaduct and railway line are still in use today, Scotrail’s Sprinter trains flashing across it in seconds. Rail travel in the early to mid-19th century was in its infancy with each new line being promoted by a private company. In 1837, the newly-formed Edinburgh and Glasgow Railway Company put together plans to connect Edinburgh and Glasgow by rail. Led by chairman John Leadbetter, a linen merchant and member of Glasgow Town Council, the new company appointed John Miller as engineer. Miller’s route and design kept the railway as level as possible over as much of the route as he could. Early steam locomotives struggled with gradients, and viaducts and tunnels helped avoid this. The planned maximum gradient was 1 in 880 making the Edinburgh and Glasgow Railway the most level main line in the UK.

1)

An Act of Parliament on 4th July 1838 authorised the line giving the Edinburgh and Glasgow Railway Company the green light. The adopted route began at a new eastern terminus in Edinburgh – Haymarket - (Edinburgh General Station, later renamed Waverley, didn’t open till 1846), continued over the Almond Valley Viaduct, through the Winchburgh Tunnel, via Linlithgow to Falkirk, and on to its new western terminus at Glasgow’s Queen Street.

2)

The 45-mile route was divided up like slices of cake. Advertisements appeared in the public newspapers for contractors to give in tenders for execution of different sections of the work. The advertisement for the largest slice, including the heaviest engineering work on the line - the Almond Valley Contract – said, “Contract No 1: Being that part of the line extending from near Norton Farm House in the Parish of Ratho to near West Inch in the Parish of Abercorn, and in length 9000 yards or thereby. This contract will include a great extent of cutting and embankment, two viaducts the one across the Almond Water Valley 682 yards long and about 70 feet high and the other across the Edinburgh and Glasgow road 108 yards long and about the same height, a tunnel thro’ Winchburgh Ridge 350 yards long, laying the rails and otherwise completing the lot”. Each contract stated “Contractors shall be completely finished on or before the 1st day of July 1841 with a penalty of £20 per day for every day it shall remain unfinished after that date”.

Images:

1) “Viaduct over the River Almond” by David Octavius Hill, Glasgow Museums Collection. 2) Aerial view of the viaduct 3) The viaduct in winter, near Broxburn

Leading bridge builder, John Gibb & Son of Aberdeen, won the Almond Valley Contract with a quote of £147, 669 and set to work on their Herculean task in February 1839. (The company made a loss of £40, 000). Over the next 3 years, the entire route echoed to an army of men, thunderous explosions and constant clanging of picks and shovels. In the nick of time before the Railway Company’s deadline, the River Avon Viaduct’s last arch completed, the contractor treated his 160 workmen to a splendid dinner in Linlithgow Town Hall. Down the line, the Polmont section of track finished too, and great celebrations ended with “a merry dance on the green to the strains of bagpipes”. But the Railway Directors high hopes of a July 1841 completion hit the buffers as other sections of line went unfinished. Penalty clause now kicking in, the Railway Directors complained to the Almond Valley Viaduct contractor that works were falling behind schedule. In reply, a letter from John Gibb & Son’s Broxburn office said, “At present we have 350 workmen and 25 horses employed on the different cuttings and tunnel on the line – 80 masons, 100 labourers, 18 joiners, 8 blacksmiths and 20 horses employed on the viaducts and bridges besides nearly 150 men with a corresponding number of horses employed in quarrying stone for the viaducts and bridges. This force you will see is not small and will be rapidly increased in the course of a very short time”. The Directors, whilst reassuring the shareholders, urged the contractor to work at night, by “torchlight”. The contractor’s claim for more money for overcoming unforeseen obstructions, unfavourable weather and doing night work cut no ice. On the workmen toiled through December and the New Year’s Day edition of the Scotsman, 1842, reports the viaduct’s arches finished, though the banks still incomplete, with hundreds of workmen working furiously. With huge sighs of relief all round, and the last sweat-lashed shovel flung aside, 18th February 1842 marked the opening ceremony of the Edinburgh to Glasgow Railway. At 1pm a steam locomotive pulling 52 carriages loaded with invited guests arrived at Haymarket from Glasgow, then

this train, and another 52-carriage steam locomotive, laden with the Edinburgh contingent – more excited shareholders and invited guests – 1100 people in all – set off triumphantly for Queen Street and a grand banquet. Schools had a holiday and along the line, people waved and cheered this big, loud, newfangled kid on the block. Full steam ahead? Not a bad way to start the New Year! A Railway Guide of 1842, like a VisitScotland ad, describes the bold curve of the Almond Valley Viaduct, its elegant form and stupendous series of arches, calling it one of the most astonishing achievements of modern skill and enterprise. And how a panorama across the Almond Valley, as enchanting as it is extensive, charms the eye. Information from the Scotsman Archives and the National Library of Scotland

Thought for the Month: Cultivating unconditional love By Tina Gilbert

W

ith Christmas approaching fast once again and family gathering to plan for, we notice the pace of life increase, worries of all that needs to be done build and stress levels rise. It is therefore important to look after yourself and prepare for time with your family. Patanjali, an Indian sage and the Buddha taught the importance of the 4 stages of loving kindness which in yoga we call Brahmaviharas and in Buddhism we called the four immeasurables. These include the quality of loving kindness or friendliness (Metta), compassion (Karuna), joy (Mudita) and equanimity (Upekkha). These four qualities are key to establishing serenity of the mind. Swami Satchidananda, yoga master says by cultivating attitudes of friendliness towards the happy, compassion towards the unhappy, delight in the virtuous and disregard the

wicked, the mind stuff retains its undisturbed calmness. She says if you use the right key with the right person you will retain your inner peace. You must also practice them on yourself. So if family and friends challenge you and you feel a sense of discomfort rising in your body, drop into awareness of the body with mindful inquiry; how am I feeling right now? How can I deal with this difficulty? What might this situation be teaching me about myself or about them? Can you observe for a moment what is happening? Pause, know what is arising within you and think about the four immeasurables of friendliness, compassion, joy and equanimity. Set yourself a positive intention look after yourself and see others differently and have a Merry Christmas. Tina lives in Livingston and teaches yoga and meditation. Christmas in Livingston Shopping, food and events

W

hen doing your Christmas preparations this year, either from scratch starting now or the last-minute bits and pieces, try and see how much of your shopping you can do with local businesses. You might be surprised by the great range of things on offer locally, and in these tough times when most of us are watching every penny, take advantage of the special offers, some of which are exclusive to Konect readers using voucher adverts from this magazine. You’ll be supporting local people in their small businesses or charity fund-raising Christmas fairs. We really do have all we need locally to get presents, house, food and family sorted for the festive season, Gift vouchers are available from a wide range of businesses and there is something for all the family. Look out for the gift vouchers offered by the hair and beauty salons featured in this magazine. They are located all over Livingston and environs so there will be one near you. This is a no-fail option for mums, aunties, sisters and grandmas. Even if they don’t specifically mention vouchers, it’s worth asking if they do them as most do. Look out too for party packages and great offers to get yourself ready for Christmas party season! Likewise, vouchers for various therapies such as a massage are always a welcome gift. There is an open day at the Well Being Centre in Carmondean on the 8th December, so this is a good place to stop off and check out several different therapies all in one place. This might be a good time to take advantage of Christmas offers and book something for yourself to use in January when you might be in need of a pick-me-up. Indeed, don’t forget yourself in the midst of all your preparations this month – a massage or foot massage and pedicure could be just the thing you need after all the traipsing around the shops.

Moving on to other members of the family, what about a golf membership? Harburn Golf Club has a special offer on this month for youth memberships, and they will give you a badge to put in the Christmas stocking for the lucky youngster! Or a gift voucher from King of the Road for driving lessons - as well as beginner lessons for the teenager in your life, they do refresher courses, so if your dad’s driving is driving you mad, this might be a way to address it.... The Stick and Cane shop in East Calder has a fantastic array of practical and novelty umbrellas, walking sticks and accessories, and they are offering a discount voucher for Konect readers (take the advert on page 22). If you like giving books, we’ve got a selection of book recommendations for every member of p20

Criss crossing Camilty Forest By Karen Murray

I

n a bid to find an enjoyable place to stroll, walk briskly or dog walk, I cajoled ‘friend with dog’ to join me on what she considered to be possibly a wild goose chase! “I’ve spotted a place to park the car and I reckon we can walk there” was what I told her. The place to park? A little entrance into the forest off the Lang Whang (A70) ! To get there, take the B7008 out of West Calder and through Harburn, all the way to the A70. Turn left and after the sign on the right saying Camilty Forest, there is a little entrance on the right. Blink and you could miss it, which we did first pass by. However, car duly parked we headed off up the fairly well graveled path into the Camilty forest. There are several paths around and it was hit or miss which to take. Our first attempt at straight ahead led us to a private road so we doubled back and took the path to the left. This opened up into a wide path picking its way through the rather wild and beautiful scenery of this forest, with its views of the peaks of the Pentland Hills and an abundance of wild flowers along the path’s edge. The Camilty Forest actually straddles the Lang Whang - or the A70 as it is officially called - and it lies on the very edge of the Pentland Hills Regional Park. You can hear the very slight rumble of the cars going by on the adjacent road, but otherwise you could be miles away from anywhere on this forest trail and the dog loved it - particularly the pools of rather peaty murky water at the edge of the path where she insisted on taking a bath every so often! 30

Forestry Commission areas are a great place to find quiet, peaceful walks away from it all and this is no exception. The particular path we chose continues to wend its way through the forest and as we were walking in the evening sunlight, the sun was low on the horizon and glinting through the trees. The path is graveled and relatively even, so not hard-going terrain, and after around 30 minutes we came to a forestry gate. This could be scaled and the walk continued but as usual there were other places to be and things to be done, so we took the gate as our turning point and retraced our steps back to the car. A simple walk and not too strenuous but a good one for the dog and a change of scene for me. I was surprised at just how away from it all I felt, despite being so close to a main road. If you are interested in birdlife, this is certainly a great place. Common crossbills can be seen flying in groups above the treetops and then landing to feed on the seeds in the cones and common sandpipers swoop down to the burns searching for aquatic insects. As it turned out I later discovered that had we continued a little further down the road there is an official car park

for the Camilty Forest - Shear Bridge car park, from where you can take a short circular grass trail past a burn and back. The grassy area next to the car park is considered a great spot for picnics in the summer. However it is not really much of a walk - the spot we found gave us greater access to the forest paths, so if you are wanting to stretch your legs and enjoy a good hike, park at the first little inlet into the forest and walk for as long as you like. I expect you would eventually come to Harperrig Reservoir. If anyone finds out, do let me know.

Charity of the Month Mount Kilimanjaro First Aid Community Programme By Jessica Bowman

M

ount Kilimanjaro First Aid Community Programme was a small charity idea formed by the rather enterprising and creative Tina Wren of Kirknewton, in 2006. After many years hard work Tina has managed to grow the Project from a one-man-show based in Kirknewton to several hubs across the UK, and to her credit has established links across the globe; just recently Tina has been in talks with a University in Hong Kong keen to work in partnership with her.

Kilimanjaro to raise funds for the local orphanages the project supports. (The first climb from one of our participants!). Next year West Lothian College will be sending out six students. Excellent news – they will be joined by three West Lothian residents as well. Our very best wishes to them – Go West Lothian College!! -who according to Aidan Martin have been very supportive. Several of this year’s team are holding various fund-raising events in and around the College – please contact Aidan at aidan.martin26@hotmail.co.uk for further information. Other events include a Comedy Night and Leg Waxing (and that’s the boys!) Aidan and friends are organising an evening of ‘Songs for Africa’ on Wednesday 31st January at 7pm in The Wee Red Bar, Edinburgh College of Art. Tickets cost £5. Contact Aidan for more info and to buy tickets (you can pay at the door too). If you are interested in working with the Project or indeed would like to climb Mount Kilimanjaro, please contact Tina Wren at Christina_2@hotmail.co.uk

Initially starting as a humanitarian organisation concentrating on delivering first aid messages, supplies and training to young people in Newlands Orphanage, Tanzania, the programme has developed extensively into a multi-project organisation offering Sexual Health Education by way of the Football Academy, Sustainable Farming Projects, Recycling Projects, and a self-sustaining Art social enterprise. Phew! However the Project is not only centred round youths in Africa. It has always been Tina’s goal to support youths in the UK too. This year saw West Lothian College send out a small team of students to Kilimanjaro to engage in various humanitarian Projects. Indeed, another milestone achieved was when local student John McDonald climbed Mount

Livingston Round Table Santa Sleigh

W

hen is the Livingston Round Table Santa Sleigh coming to our street ?”

This is a frequently-asked question in Livingston this time of the year. Since the Round Table was re-established in Livingston four years ago, the Santa Sleigh - with its flashing Christmas lights and a selection of cheery Christmas tunes belting out - has become a regular fixture. Everyone looks forward to getting a wave from Santa ... not to mention a big ‘Merry Christmas’, from his Elves (collectors) with their trademark flashing Santa hats. This is the main fundraiser for Livingston Round Table and all the money raised goes back into our local community. Round Table is a purely voluntary organisation. Santa Sleigh visits various streets throughout Livingston, collecting cash from residents that is sealed in special collection jars and used to benefit good causes locally. Over the past four years tens of thousands of pounds have been raised, every penny of which has helped local good causes and charities.

Livingston Youth Foundation, The Larder.... to name just a few. The locations and dates of this year’s Santa Sleigh itinerary are detailed below. There are a couple of additional locations to be confirmed, and detailed street by street dates and information will be available on the Round Table website in December. See www.livingston.roundtable.co.uk. If you are involved in a local charity or good cause and would like to nominate it to receive a donation from the Round Table, they would be happy to hear from you and consider your request. Round Table are always looking for new members, and particularly volunteers to help out with Santa Sleigh. More information on this and the Round Table organisation can be found at www.livingston.roundtable.co.uk.

Donations can range from £250 to £3500, and beneficiaries over the past couple of years have included West Lothian Epilepsy, River Kids, Astro Gymnastics, Home Start West Lothian, Livingston Rugby Club (funds for a trip), Brighter Days Livingston, West Lothian Women’s Aid, Craigshill Good Neighbour Network, Lothian 4x4 Response, Date Time Location Sunday 9th December 4pm – 7.30pm Dedridge/Murieston area Monday 10th December 6pm - 8pm Murieston Tuesday 11th December 6pm - 8pm Murieston Valley Wednesday 12th December 6pm - 8pm Eliburn Thursday 13th December 6pm - 8pm Ladywell West Sunday 16th December 4pm – 7.30pm Eliburn continued Monday 17th December 6pm - 8pm Deans South : Waverley Crescent, Martin Brae,Houston Road areas Tuesday 18th December 6pm - 8pm Deans North : Deer Park, Knightsridge Wednesday 19th December 6pm - 8pm Livingston Village Thursday 20th Decemeber 6pm - 8pm Mid Calder

December Recipe and Food Notes By Anne Pinkerton

I

n winter the kitchen is the heart of the house. It is a living place. Kettles sing, pots bubble visitors come and sit and drink coffee. Children use the kitchen table to draw at, paint at, model with play-dough and help with cooking. They hang about waiting for bowls to lick out.”

Remove the ham to an oven proof baking tin and, placing it skin side uppermost ,strip off the rind. It will come away easily but will be hot.

This slightly rosy picture is from “Through the Kitchen Window” by Susan Hill. It will serve as an introduction for December cooking in the hope that this year will be satisfying and relaxed. The impossible image of Christmas with the family all in new clothes, the house decorated to the nines, and tables full of posh restaurant-style food should not intimidate you! Relax, enjoy the season, plan ahead and take comfort in the the thought that the days are about to start lengthening again. Cook double your normal favourite dishes and freeze half of them. Or you could cook some winter warmers made from usual ingredients but with a little extra twist and then bring them out at busy times. Try Bean and Chorizo Casserole, Braised Chicken with Thyme and Parsnip, Salmon and Leek Filo Pie or Cardamom lamb Hot-pot. When thoroughly defrosted, any of these dishes will take the same time to be hot as it will take to cook the potatoes and set the table. Here are some seasonal receipts which can be offered in celebration to be shared. Glazed Ham You can cook either smoked or unsmoked ham joints in the following way. Nowadays, because of milder curing methods, there is no need to soak the ham before you cook it. If this is the first time you have cooked a ham do not start with a whole one. They weigh about 6-8kgs and are a challenge to cope with normal domestic utensils. Start with a 2-3kg small joint. Total cooking times is based on 40 minutes per kilo. You will also need: 1 onion, Bay leaf, 6-10 cloves 2 carrots, 2 sticks celery, 1 orange Put the ham in a large pan, cover with cold water and add the flavourings. Bring to the boil slowly and simmer for half the estimated cooking time, about one hour.

46

For baking you will need : Cloves 1 litre orange juice Mustard , grainy or smooth as you prefer. Golden syrup Method With the tip of a sharp knife score the fat in a diamond pattern. Stick a clove in the middle of each diamond. Spread mustard and a good layer of syrup all over the fat. Pour the orange juice into the pan and add a little water, so the liquid comes at least 2 inches up the side of the joint. Seal the whole roasting tin in a double layer of foil and bake at 160oC for another hour. Baste with the juices a couple of times. To finish, take off the foil and bake for another 5-10 minutes until the top looks golden. The ham can be carved and eaten hot, served with mashed potatoes and broad beans. Or keep it to go cold and eat with watercress, chicory and orange salad, baked potatoes and chutney. Any leftovers can be used for pasta bakes, sandwiches or potato, apple and ham bake. Mincemeat Fruit cake. This is an easy fruity cake and is much lighter than a Christmas Cake. 150gm butter cut into small pieces 150gm pale soft brown sugar 2 large eggs 225gm self-raising flour 225gm good mincemeat 100gm each sultanas and currants 1 whole sharp apple grated

December Food Notes Continued p46Method

In a large bowl cream the butter and sugar together. Add all the other ingredients and mix thoroughly. Line an 8 inch cake tin with baking parchment. Pile the cake mixture in and flatten the top. Decorate if you like with split almonds. Bake at 160oC till a skewer comes out clean, about 1 ¼ hours. This cake can be white iced but it does not need it. Tie a ribbon round it to look festive. Lastly an indulgence! Chocolate truffles 175gm dark chocolate, I prefer Lindt 70%. If you use milk chocolate the result will be sweeter. 2 tablespoons liqueur, orange or ginger are delicious, as is brandy or whisky. 40gm unsalted butter 50gm icing sugar 50gm ground nuts. Chose hazel, almond or walnuts to compliment the liqueur.

48

Cocoa for rolling the truffles Method Melt the chocolate with the liqueur in a bowl set over a pan of hot water. Stir well till smooth. Add the butter, stirring till it has melted in. Then add the sugar and the ground nuts. Leave in a cool place to set. Roll into about 24 balls. Dust with cocoa and put in a paper case if you have some. Kept cool, the truffles should last about 2 weeks….unless you eat them or give them as presents.
