Hello neighbours Welcome to the July issue of the Konect Directory. With summer and travel on the mind, our writer Yvonne has been looking into travel locally in bygone days, see her article on pages 8 and 9. In our usual columns, the Food Notes give us some picnic ideas (here’s hoping for the right weather!) and our walk article takes us up into the Pentlands. We’ve also been learning about a local charity, West Lothian Young Carers Project. Congratulations to Jane Sandison of East Calder who won the crossword competition in the last issue. This month, you could win afternoon tea or

There’s a Coach Coming in! By Yvonne MacMillan
W
est Lothian’s varied travel history includes a 90 year period when stagecoaches ruled the roads. Between 1760 and 1850, stagecoaches thundered to and fro along the three main roads cutting through the county and connecting Edinburgh and Glasgow. Coaching inns, a few of which remain today, like the Torphichen Arms in Midcalder and Livingston Village’s Livingston Inn were purpose-built staging posts strung out along these routes like vital links in a chain, providing food and shelter for passengers and stabling for the hard-working horses. A team of 4 horses could pull a coach at 10 miles an hour for an hour at a stretch, and inns were built at roughly that distance apart. Stagecoaches had names like The Edinburgh to Glasgow Flyer, Rocket, Quicksilver, The Telegraph and The Express and competition to provide the fastest service for the 52 miles between Edinburgh and Glasgow was fierce. Passengers were squeezed in, 10 to 14 per coach, like sardines in a tin. A single fare cost 4 shillings for an inside seat and 2 shillings for outside, at the full mercy of the weather. The journey time was constantly being reduced, taking 9 - 10 hours at the beginning of the 19th century to a recordbreaking 3 hours 44 minutes in 1831 in a race between rival companies. But the key to the success of the stagecoach era were road improvements. Up until the mid 1700’s, roads were little better than beaten tracks, earth trampled flat by countless feet as people went about their day-to-day business – turning into impassable rivers of oozing mud in winter and wet weather. An early attempt to run a stagecoach service in 1678, advertised it would “Leave Edinbro ilk Monday morning, and return again, God willing, ilk Saturday night”. Roads had to improve and the turnpike system was adopted. From 1752 laws were passed giving powers to Turnpike Trusts made up of local landowners to “make, amend, widen and keep in repair the roads” and tolls were charged for their upkeep.
Each Trust took on the responsibility for a stretch of road (anything up to 20 miles). The laws gave the trusts powers to borrow money to build the new road - the security for the loan was the tolls that would be levied on the road-users. The trustees built a toll-house for the toll collector (tacksman) and tollgates as barriers across the road. These improved roads were known as turnpike roads - when a road-user paid the toll, a pike on the tollgate was turned, the gate pushed open and the traveller, pocket a little lighter, carried on his way. The three Edinburgh to Glasgow turnpike roads of the 18th century were the route through Midcalder/Livingston/Shotts, a route via Linlithgow/Falkirk/Kirkintilloch and a road via Newbridge/Uphall/Bathgate. Midcalder’s Torphichen Arms dates from 1763 when the turnpike road arrived in the village (today’s A71 mainly follows the route of this old turnpike road). Known as The Lemon Tree Inn when newly built, it was the first stopping point after leaving Edinburgh on journeys between Edinburgh and Glasgow, Edinburgh and Ayr, and Edinburgh and Hamilton. Standing at the edge of the village and sheltered by Calder Wood, the two-storey inn must have been a welcome sight for passengers, coachmen and horses alike, after a bone-shaking 12 mile journey from Edinburgh as the mud-spattered coach clattered across the stone-built bridge over the Linhouse Water and pulled up at the inn’s door. Stable lads watered the horses or changed them for a fresh team. The inn’s stables once stood where the car park is, with more stables through the pend (arch) across the street.

2) Torphichen Arms, built in 1763 when the turnpike road ran through Mid Calder. 3) West Lothian’s last remaining Toll House on Old Cousland Road
2)
Another clue, a short walk from Livingston Inn, is the B listed Scottish Historic Building called The Old Toll-house (a private residence), West Lothian’s last remaining toll-house still standing by the side of the original turnpike road now called Old Cousland Road. The arrival of the railways in the mid1800’s and rail travel between Edinburgh and Glasgow saw a steep decline in the stagecoaches’ fortunes as all eyes turned to the train.
Built in 1760, Livingston Inn is a whiteharled, single-storey solid building with its very doorstep on the old turnpike road. It is said a distinguished visitor by the name of Robert Burns - born the year before the inn was built - once slept under its roof. An arched stableblock adjoins the inn and is the lounge bar today. The inn’s surroundings of traditional cottages and centuries-old church make the scene look much the same as it must have done in the 18th century and it’s easy to imagine the clamour and commotion as a passengerladen stagecoach arrived. Fascinating glimpses of West Lothian’s stagecoach past are all around. The story goes that Blawhorn Moss (a National Nature Reserve) near Blackridge gets its name because it was a look-out point for the Glasgow to Edinburgh stagecoaches on the road below. When the watcher saw or heard the coach and horses galloping into sight from the west, he gave a loud blast on a horn, a signal for the local coaching inn - the Craig Inn - to prepare for thirsty travellers and flagging horses. And tragic accidents happened – a gravestone in Kirkton Kirkyard, Bathgate reads “Here lieth the Mortal Part Of Benjamin Shaw the affectionate, dutiful and only son of Benjamin and Sarah Shaw of St Paul’s Church Yard, London, Who was suddenly kill’d by the breaking down of the Telegraph coach near West Craig on Monday 16th February 1807 in the 18th year of his age”.
A small exhibition called The Story Of Blackridge at Blackridge Library includes a display about stagecoach travel. Open at various times on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays until 29th September
3)
The turnpike system lasted into the late 1800’s when roads became the responsibility of local authorities. Most turnpike trusts were badly in debt with little prospect for repayment of loans. The Department of Transport took on the responsibility for the network of main roads in 1919, as it does today. West Lothian Young Carer’s Project
T
here are many children and young people in West Lothian whose lives are dominated by the fact that they care for a member of their family who is sick or disabled, has a mental health problem or is affected by drugs or alcohol. “I can’t meet my friends because I have to make the tea” is one quote from a local young carer. “I look after my younger brother when my mum drinks too much” is another. Looking after someone can be very difficult and demanding, and for young people looking after a parent or sibling, it’s a huge burden for young shoulders to bear – especially when their peers are getting on with the business of being children, having fun or focussing on doing well at school. Young carers can be aged between 5 and 18 and do a range of tasks in and around the house. They are sometimes left alone to do the caring and their tasks may involve washing, cooking, shopping, dressing the person they care for and much more. Young carers may even sometimes have to give medicine, take care of the household bills and manage the money and look after younger siblings. They can feel isolated and miss out on much of the fun that any child is entitled to. This is where the West Lothian Young Carers Project comes in. A branch of the Carers of West Lothian charity, they provide individual support for young carers, identify hidden young carers who may need support, raise awareness of the issues and organise group activities and relief. Activities and outings provide the opportunity to have a break from their responsibilities and meet other young carers. According to UK-wide research, the average age of a young carer is 12; 75% of young carers are looking after their mum and 50% live with a lone parent. 48% of young carers are looking after someone with a mental health issue.

Thought for the Month By Jackie Whigham
Don’t Die With Your Music Still In You.
P
When you are fulfilled from the inside, you stop looking for validation from the outside.
eople who feel lost in their lives are hard to live with. They are needy individuals who require constant praise, reassurance and validation from the outside world.
Therefore, the solution to a life that feels lost and empty, a life that feels there has to be something more, is a life that needs to find its Purpose.
You are not here by chance. You have a Purpose - a Purpose that, when discovered and put into action, will light you up from within. Your Purpose will birth your passion. It will bring you back into the game of life, making you feel alive and connected to all that is.
Once you rediscover your Purpose, go forward with courage and allow yourself to bring your gifts into the world. You matter and your gifts are needed at this time. Don’t die with your music still in you! Go forward and enjoy the journey. Have a great day!
Stop getting caught up in the busyness of life and allow yourself to become still. It is from your stillness that you will hear what you are called to do. Fulfilling your calling fills you up from the inside.

Vet’s Tip:
Learn to Talk Dog
D
ogs communicate with postures, expressions and sounds. It’s a language that they learn from the day they are born. We need to learn to speak ‘dog’ so we can understand what our pooch is saying. Look at your dog’s overall posture. Are they standing tall and proud or are they slinking low to the ground to make themselves look smaller? Look at the tail position - a high tail is confident or wary, a low tail shows a scared or timid dog. A wagging tail is simply a sign of heightened emotion, not necessarily happiness! Look at your dog’s face. Is it wrinkled into a frown, are the eyes wide open and are the ears pulled back flat? All three signs indicate a fearful dog. Pricked forward facing ears, a hard stare and
teeth on show mean back off NOW. Always take heed of the signs and take steps to make your dog feel safer. Many signs of fear are at the lower end of what behaviourists call a ladder of aggression. If you ignore the less obvious signs or worse still punish a dog for growling or snapping, the next time your dog will have no choice but to escalate their behaviour. That’s when bites happen. Very few dogs ever bite out of the blue, usually they have done their utmost to communicate that they feel threatened. So watch your dog closely, learn to recognise their own body language cues and don’t put them into uncomfortable situations. The Hills are Alive! By David Syme
O
n a recent walk in the Pentlands with my wife I met plenty of other recreational users of these fine hills. The weather was good, the views superb, and everyone we greeted smiled as if to say: “Aren’t we lucky to have this on our doorstep”.
blocks, Corstorphine Hill and the low, white Holiday Inn building, the Donaldson Institute, St Mary’s Cathedral... .. we were over the shoulder of the hill before we knew it! I offered my wife a shortcut to the right. When she turned it down I knew that today this walk was a winner! The path branched, but we kept to the higher one which led to a stand of fir trees. Bonaly Reservoir lay behind these trees, and where the path turned to the right we hopped over a stile to head straight for the water. The reservoir was full and the waterside path flooded, so we had to pick our way through the heathery clumps to the dam wall. Resting at the far end of the dam was a group of three boys and two girls on a Duke of Edinburgh expedition, laden with camping gear and chatting happily together.
We set off from Harlaw car-park in Balerno at 10am and took the path heading for the saddle between Harbour Hill and Bell’s Hill. This is a great path! The angle is never steep, and the views over to the Ochills and Fife on a good day make the steady climb worthwhile. A cool easterly wind was blowing in our faces, but the well-made path was mainly dry. Several cyclists passed us; the path is good for them, too, and from Harlaw they can cross to Flotterstone or return to Harlaw by way of Glencorse and Loganlea Reservoirs. Just before we reached the kissing gate where the path descends the Maiden’s Cleugh we turned left onto a narrow path which worked its way round Harbour Hill, climbing gently. Two people with a dog strode ahead of us, silhouetted against a sky of blue and white. At one point they stopped for a passionate hug – it was that kind of day. Every step brought more of Edinburgh into view, and the challenge of identifying landmarks took the tiredness out of the legs. Wester Hailes housing

We turned right to take the path which descends into the Phantom’s Cleugh. Some long-distance runners came up towards us, taking short rhythmical steps and carrying water bottles, tiny backpacks and exotic headgear. Who wants to run an urban marathon when you can do 26 miles or more in the Pentlands?

Ahead we could see a corner of Glencorse Reservoir, but we veered off to the right so as not to lose height. Following sheep tracks we held our height until the path climbing from the reservoir reached us just short of the kissing gate. Here we met a lass leading a heavy horse. “He’s had enough of this!” She said as they clattered downhill. A few moments later we watched anxiously as a cyclist sped down after them, but they had moved off the path and all went well. At the gate we paused to admire the view. Ben Vorlich and Ben Lomond were just visible to the west, Benarty Hill and the Lomonds in the east. A man with binoculars took the path towards Bell’s Hill, perhaps a bird watcher looking for the birds of prey that live up near Loganlea? A man and a young lad were coming down from the summit of Harbour Hill as we walked on. We chatted to an elderly man with two poles who was coming up towards us, and made the usual remark about the fine weather. “Snow is forecast” he joked. He looked

the kind of chap who would not mind a bit of June snow. Halfway down the man and boy overtook us at speed. “Lunch is on the table!” The man shouted as they loped down the path. We reached our car at 12.30 after an exhilarating walk. If we had been seeking peace and solitude on the walk we could have been disappointed, but we were delighted to have shared the morning with so many others who could take pleasure in the Pentlands in their own way. We are indeed lucky to have these hills.

Isabella Gunn
Family History Column By Maureen McIntyre
W
hen researching your family tree you will almost become like a detective trying to separate and make sense of the information that you find. • Fact – or is it? – what you find in the census and statutory birth, death and marriage records – bearing in mind that what is recorded may only be as close to the facts as the person who supplied the information was aware. People, especially women, were sometimes ‘economical’ with their ages. • Family History – stories and information from living relatives are a valuable source of information but you need to be aware that the information may not be completely accurate. Speaking to older members of your family will be a rewarding experience and my advice is – write everything down – no matter how small a piece of information it could be crucial. One story that I have spent a good many hours trying to unravel, separating fact from fiction, is the story of a woman called Isabella Gunn. Sadly she is no relation to me but her story has fascinated me since I first heard about her. Isabella Gunn died on 7th November 1861, a pauper. She was listed as being 80 years old and died close to Stromness in the Orkney Isles. Quite an ordinary occurrence you may think, but Isabella had no ordinary life. As a young girl she had contracted smallpox which left her badly disfigured and as she came from a poor family the chances of her marrying well were very slim. Her elder brother had left home and had found a well-paid job working for the Hudson Bay Company in Canada. Isabella must have been desperate to make a better life for herself so in 1806
30
she disguised herself as a man (women were not allowed to work for the Company) and took on the alias of John Fubbister. She signed a three year contract with the Hudson Bay Company and sailed from Stromness, arriving in Fort Albany many months later. Isabella or John worked hard and became a successful trapper and canoeist and was considered an excellent employee. Only one person knew Isabella’s secret and this was a man, also from Stromness called John Scarth. He had sailed to Canada on the same ship as Isabella in 1806 but his relationship with Isabella would be her downfall. On December 29th 1807 Isabella gave birth to the first white child born in North Dakota, her midwife was a local woman from the Chippewa tribe. The Hudson Bay Company discharged Isabella and she was deported home to Scotland in disgrace with her son, whom she named James Scarth. Isabella’s life back on Scotland, being a single mother, must have been terrible. I have found her on the census records in 1851 and her occupation is listed as stocking knitter but I can find no trace of James…………yet. There are many Scottish people who played a huge part in making Canada and America what it is today and I will introduce you to these in future articles. Genealogy is fast becoming one of the most popular hobbies in the country with people becoming addicted to finding out all they can about their ancestors. If you are just starting your tree or if you are having problems with any of your branches, please email me at rootsandbranches@hotmail.co.uk

July Recipe and Food Notes By Anne Pinkerton
S
chool is out, children are on holiday, long summer days and things to do in the open-air. It is not the time to linger in the kitchen. It is the time to think of picnics and food to cook for easy eating out doors. Picnic food can be as grand or as simple as the circumstances allow. Posh food for summer events when you nearly need a butler to help serve the champagne and lay out the linen table-cloth … or an apple, lump of cheese and a crust of bread all eaten from your back-pack on a walk in the hills are both satisfying the same need. Food for out of doors must taste good, be easy to carry and be sustaining.
a Morris Minor estate and no, the sun did not always shine. Eating in confined space sometimes led to fights and poor behaviour BUT we were all out of the house and that is what picnics are all about. Raised Pork Pies, Scotch Eggs, soup in a thermos, fruit cake, biscuits and fresh fruit are still the foods best for out-doors. So what follows are some slightly new twists on the theme. Sausage Plate Pie These are exactly the same ingredients as for sausage rolls but quicker to assemble and easier to pack for a picnic 225gm short crust pastry 220gm sausage meat 1 onion chopped 1 egg beaten Chopped, fresh mixed herbs or a good table-spoonful chutney Method. Roll out the pastry into 2 circles to fit a 8’’ or 9’’ metal plate. Mix the sausage meat, egg, onion and herbs or chutney well together. Line the plate with one circle of pastry, pile the filling on top and cover with the second round of pastry. Brush the top with a little milk and bake in the oven at 220°C for 30 minutes.
I remember with pleasure the childhood corned beef and Heinz sandwich spread baps followed by banana and brown sugar sandwiches which, as children, we considered enough sustenance for a day playing at the beach. On car journeys food could be more “normal” and my Mother would bring a fruit cake, pork pie, boiled eggs with salt and pepper in screws of paper, tomatoes, a loaf of bread which she sliced to order, sliced ham, butter, cheddar cheese, salad-cream and lettuce. From these we could make up whatever fillings we preferred for self-made sandwiches. For drink we had diluted fruit squash. This was the late 50’s early 60’s and the car was

Gazpacho, Chilled Tomato and Pepper Soup There are several delicious cold soups, Vichyssoise, Green Pea or chilled Consommé, but the most famous is probably Gazpacho. It may also be the simplest to make since there is no cooking! 1 cucumber peeled and chopped finely 1small red and 1 small green pepper, cored, de-seeded and finely chopped 500gm very ripe tomatoes ,skinned, deseeded and chopped or 200ml passata (commercially made strained tomatoes) 1 small onion finely chopped 2 cloves garlic crushed 75ml red wine vinegar 200ml good olive oil ½ litre very cold water or ice and water Salt, pepper, Tabasco, tomato ketchup and a couple of mint leaves. All to taste.

For the topping melt the topping butter gently with the chocolate and pour and spread it on the filling. Leave for 5-10 minutes till just setting and then, with a sharp knife mark out the bars, about 16. Leave to set. These need to be kept cool or the result is a custard slide; a bit like a mud slide but better to eat! Method. Puree, wiz in a blender or liquefy with a wand all the ingredients apart from ½ the olive oil. Press through a coarse sieve or blend a second time. Stir in the oil and check and adjust the taste. Add a little lemon juice if liked. Keep cold in a thermos. If not eating this on a picnic serve with croutons and a garnish of finely chopped cucumber, onion, mint and red pepper. Nanaimo Bars Sweet tray bakes or slices are easy puddings for a day out. Try Rocky Road, flapjack, Florida Lemon Square or this different biscuit/cake from Canada. I am told you must use Birds Custard powder for the authentic flavour, so I did. This is fun for young cooks to make. Base ingredients 125gm butter melted 40gm sugar 25gm cocoa powder 1 large egg lightly beaten 175gm crushed biscuits, digestive are best 75gm coconut, flaked or desiccated 75gm chopped walnuts Filling ingredients 50gm butter 2 tablespoons custard powder 1 teaspoon vanilla essence 3 tablespoons milk 225gm icing sugar Topping ingredients 75gm dark chocolate 1 tablespoon butter. Method. Lightly oil and line with cling-film a traybake tin. Mix well all the base ingredients together and press into the tin. Set aside to chill in the fridge. Make the filling by creaming the filling butter with the custard powder and vanilla. Add the milk and icing sugar alternatively about 1/3 at a time till smooth. Spread this mixture over the biscuit base. Chill again. To advertise call 07824 469266 or 07854 492638

n November 2011, EC Allsteps attended a Scotcheer Cheerleading/Dance competition in Dundee, where both junior and senior hiphop squads won bids to compete at the ECU European championships. The two day competition will be held in Amsterdam on 30th of June for Seniors and on 1st of July for Juniors.
The 29 girls, their families and supporters are really looking forward to this trip and are excited to be able to represent Scotland at this level. Words can’t express how proud Vicky is of all girls for achieving this. “I’m one very lucky Head Coach to have such a wonderful group of girls and parents who are all like one big family”.
Both squads, aged from 13 to 23, have worked hard polishing their routines and fundraising to make this trip possible. The dance school have held a race night, a live band fundraising night, a fitness boot camp over 10 weeks held by one of the dads, tombolas and a recent concert. The girls and their families are very grateful for all the local support from everyone involved and would also like to thank Thomas Grieve & Son Funeral Directors, Morrisons, Peterkin & Kidd Solicitors, West Lothian Council and East Calder Gala Committee.
