Message from the Editor Hello neighbours We’ve all had to pull our belts in over the past year or so, but with the inevitable Christmas spend upon us now the least we can do is make every penny count locally and support local businesses as much as possible when Christmas shopping. Many of them have special offers for Konect readers and we’ve put together a Christmas shopping feature starting on page 16.
they have researched on local people who volunteered in the First World War. Congratulations to Margaret Crossan of Addiewell who won the crossword prize last month. This month, Deer Park Golf and Country Club are offering bowling package - bowl and dine for four so well worth trying your luck with the crossword on page 26.
Helen-Jane Shearer
For this issue also we’ve looked up the bonfire night events in the area, and there is an interesting local walk to try out. And for the local history feature this month, my thanks are due to West Calder High School and to Robin Miller of Kirknewton for sharing information

Calders Soldiers 1914 - 1918 any men from the Calders area joined the “Hearts Battalion”, 16th Royal Scots, during the First World

cost. They reached the village of Contalmaison and held a position known as the Scots Redoubt until relieved later that day.
In 1914 the majority of the Hearts first team, then sitting at the top of the league and favourites to win the Scottish Cup, received a white feather in the post. “Professionals”, including footballers, were excluded from enlistment for military service in the First World War, and the feather in the post intimated that they were cowards for not volunteering to fight in the trenches.
Many from the Calders joined the Battalion. One of them was Lance Corporal Jimmy Boyd. Jimmy was born in Seafield and his family moved to Mossend on the outskirts of West Calder. He attended West Calder High School (then situated on Hartwood Road) and on leaving school he worked in the shale mining industry. He played football with a local team Mossend Burnvale, then joined the Hearts as an inside forward alongside his brother who was the Hearts Goalkeeper at the time. Also

The Hearts team, along with many supporters and players from other local and amateur teams, joined the 16th Battalion of the Royal Scots, formed by Colonel George McCrae. The Battalion was raised in record time and was one of the many “pals” battalions formed at the time. They became known as the Hearts Battalion or the Sporting Battalion, but the soldiers preferred to be known as McCrae’s Own. They quickly gained a reputation as one of the best battalions in the British Army and were deployed at the Somme in 1916. The first day of the Battle of

part of the team was Pat Crossan from Addiewell, a talented footballer nicknamed “the handsomest man in the world”. When the Hearts team decided to volunteer, Jimmy and his brother had to choose who would stay at home to support the family and who would go off to war. Jimmy won - or lost, depending on how you look at it. He survived the first day of the battle at the Somme, but on the 3rd August he was wounded and carried to a field hospital for treatment. The hospital was hit by artillery fire and all inside killed. Jimmy was initially buried near the scene but later his body was moved although there is no record of where to and he is one of the many buried in an un-named grave. His family have his name engraved on the »

» headstone of the family plot at West Calder Cemetery. Pat Crossan was also wounded during the battle and his leg marked down for amputation. He pleaded with the doctor not to do so as he was a footballer and needed both legs to play for Hearts!. A German prisoner of war, a doctor, was asked to operate and saved his leg. Towards the end of the war, however, Pat was gassed and his lungs permanently damaged. He died as a result of his injuries after the war. Very few of those who signed up in 1914 survived the war and only one or two of the Hearts team kicked a ball in earnest again. Mossend Burnvale, the team Jimmy Boyd played with before joining Hearts, all joined McCrae’s Own at the start of the war following Jimmy’s example. Only one of them returned home. At West Calder High School a stone lion recovered from the original West Calder High School has been dedicated as a memorial to Jimmy Boyd and others from the school who fought and died in the War. West Calder High School is keen to collate information about other ex-pupils who perhaps fought alongside Jimmy Boyd and Pat Crossan. If anyone has any knowledge about anyone who took part, please contact Sandy Potter Pupil Support Manager at West Calder High School.Tel 01506 871510 or post to Sandy Potter, West Calder High School, Limefield, Polbeth, EH55 8QN. I’m dreaming of a green
Christmas
Karen Murray looks at the options for ethical buying and reducing your carbon footprint this year.
I
t might be that we actually get a white Christmas if last year’s winter weather is anything to go by, but in the lead up to Christmas what gets us all in a ‘fankle’ is wondering what to buy and where to buy it. In these days of ethical buying and reduced carbon footprint, we need to take a long hard look at our buying habits when it comes to Christmas shopping. OK, it’s easy to click a button and order online. You can even have the present gift-wrapped and delivered direct to the recipient. We are time poor and it’s a hassle free option, but it simply isn’t what Christmas shopping should be about. I have wonderful memories of festive shopping trips with my mum and aunt, looking for just the right gift for each family member and friend, stopping for coffee and cake along the way, then all the wrapping and delivering of the presents. It would be great to take the extra step of making sure the shopping trip is local, thereby cutting down the carbon footprint, supporting the local economy and finding something truly unique.
Supporting the independent trader is a big step towards a greener Christmas. Candles are popular at any time of year but especially at Christmas. Yankee Candles are American but Europe’s largest Yankee Candle store ‘Yankee at Home’ is based at The Centre, Livingston and run by West Calder people, so you are supporting local traders by buying your candles there. Another classic present is of course jewellery. Ametista, also in the Centre, is a small independent jewellery store specialising in sterling silver and gemstone pieces. And a new bike is a classic Christmas gift - you could decide that 2011 will be the year you start cycling more instead of taking the car, in which case head along to Pedal Power in West Calder where you’ll get the best advice on bikes for the whole family. They will even store the bike for you until Christmas! For a thoughtful and useful gift from a local supplier, check out the range from ihear. Their products are not just for the hard of hearing see their advertisement on page 39 for ideas.
Local farmers’ markets and craft fairs offer a wealth of wonderful and unique gifts, often made around the corner. Top of the list is probably Hopetoun House’s fair ‘The Present Event’ - with over 60 stands you’re sure to find something for everyone. You can also take a rest for coffee and cakes or lunch which adds to the whole experience. There is a host of local craft fairs, see our calendar below, where you can buy unique gifts as well as supporting community facilities such as the schools or Village Hall associations. A fantastic range of local jewellery and soap makers and other artisans usually have stalls offering unique items that you just can’t buy at the big chain stores. At the craft fair held in Balerno High School you can pick up hand made items such as a range of hand painted pottery from Kirknewton-based pottery painting studio Potter Around. You might feel inspired enough to head to the studio itself and paint

For cards, our local Phoenix Cards traders fit the bill. By buying some of your Christmas cards from them, you can support a charity as well - in 2009, Phoenix Trading raised over £70,000 for charities through the sale of its Christmas cards. Our local trader is Morag Hill of Mid Calder, see her range at www.phoenix-trading.eu/web/ moraghill. Thoughts of Christmas inevitably turn to food. to avoid the crowds, or even more tempting to do the lot on-line. But hold off, and imagine the joy of shopping at the local farm shop or farmers’ market, the butchers and the bakers and putting together something really special for the day that includes locally-grown food. Try Dickson’s Farm Shop in East Calder, where you can also find a selection of cards, fresh bread from the Hedgerow Bakery and more. The Whole Shebag of South Cobbinshaw can deliver a box of organic produce, and Edinburghbased Real Foods is Scotland’s largest retailer of natural, organic, vegetarian and Fairtrade food. There are local food co-ops in East Calder (Fridays, East Calder Primary School 11am – 1pm) and Addiewell (Fridays, Addiewell Community Centre, 11am-12.30pm). When it comes to meat for the festive feast, you can find plenty of locally-reared meat and you can even go the extra ethical mile and buy organic. You can stick with the traditional turkey or try beef, venison or lamb, partridge or duck or particularly in vogue at the moment, guinea fowl. Steven Belford Butcher, based in Deans, will be happy to help you plan and prepare for your Christmas lunch. I love all the decorative wrappings available for Christmas, but if we are to be green the wrapping should be at the very least recycled, or indeed not there at all. The way around this could to be to go down the voucher route. There are numerous local businesses offering gift vouchers for Christmas. It also solves the problem of what to buy the person who has everything – a voucher for driving lessons from Driving with Rod perhaps? Rod teaches not only young learner drivers but older people wanting a refresher course or a little more confidence. Or what about some pampering with a voucher? Local beauty salons offering gift vouchers include Bliss Beauty, Simply the Best, Utopia, Lisa Blair Beauty and Lumiere. For a bit of alternative pampering, Holistic Healing, at East Calder Sports Centre, do gift vouchers for reflexology and various massages. You’ve got the gifts; the meal is in hand; what about the tree? Buying a Christmas tree from a local supplier not only supports them but is the more environmentally friendly choice To advertise call 07824 469266 or 07854 492638
over an artificial tree. Kirknewton Primary School will be selling freshly cut trees with the proceeds going to the school, so keep an eye out for that. You can pick up a tree from Veitch’s Garden Centre in East Calder or from Riccarton Garden Centre. For environmentally friendly Christmas decorations, head down to the Almondell and Calderwood Visitor Centre on 19th December for a Christmas craft session using natural items found in the park, from 2 – 3.30pm (£2 per person). There are many ways to be ethical and green at Christmas such as buying gifts from Oxfam or World Vision, or not sending Christmas cards at all but making a donation to charity. But everyone has to start somewhere, and buying locally, supporting your community and the businesses in it has to be a good place to start. Happy Christmas Shopping!

On the Boardwalk By Karen Murray
F
or the serious walker, a boardwalk might be considered a cop out. However, the main point of a boardwalk is to preserve the land beneath while allowing you to walk in the environment and enjoy it. The other reason boardwalks are so great is that they are an added incentive to persuade children to go for a walk. Mine change their shrill cries of ‘Oh no, not a walk’ to ‘Great, let’s go’ when we mention it might be a boardwalk.
area of central Scotland. Flora is many and varied with a carpet of sphagnum moss, heather, cotton grass, crowberry, hair moss and even the insect eating round leaved sundew – which has been known to eat even dragonflies. That little nugget of information could certainly intrigue a child and keep their interest in the outdoors!
Our usual haunt is the boardwalk at Red Moss near Balerno, but through a friend who works at Scottish Natural Heritage I have discovered a new place for us to visit as a family namely Blawhorn Moss, near Blackridge. The wooden pathways now winding around this ancient habitat not only preserve the habitat, they keep the visitor safe too – if you stray off them you might just find yourself waist-deep in layers of soil and moss that have been vegetating for 1,200 years! For the budding ornithologist, many different birds visit the moss at different times of year including the red grouse, snipe, curlew, redshank, teal, skylark, hen harrier and short eared owl. Butterflies and dragonflies are also regularly seen at the reserve as are frogs and toads.
As recently as 2008 Blawhorn - one of the largest and best examples of lowland raised peat bogs in the Lothians – was re-declarated as a National Nature Reserve (NNR). The 110 hectare Blawhorn Moss is owned by Scottish Natural Heritage and they are keen for people to visit this internationally recognised reserve. Bog habitat is still under threat nationally almost 94% of the UK’s lowland raised bog habitat has been lost since the end of the 19th century. Large areas of these deep peat deposits were dug out for fuel, drained for farming or planted for forestry. The bog, which has over twelve thousand years of moss growth, is a survivor of a huge area of peat which once covered the entire

With all the talk of bog, you might wonder why it is such a great place for a walk. In the past bogs were simply considered only suitable for cutting the peat or for draining, but that has all changed. A walk across the bog affords a real close encounter with nature as well as some fabulous views. Bogs also act as a carbon sink, trapping carbon dioxide and helping combat global warming. Blawhorn is one of the best examples in central Scotland. Perhaps the best time to visit the bog in terms of wildlife is from April to July but you will always find something of interest at any time of year and autumn often brings perfect walking weather. In fact at this time of year, the leaves of bog cotton and deergrass turn the bog a rich russet colour. This is only a short walk, but if you fancy a longer walk, you can start with Blawhorn and the reserve then links into the local path network.

Blawhorn can be found northwest of the village of Blackridge, four miles west of Armadale It can easily be reached from Junction 4 of the M8, heading west for three miles on the A89 to Blackridge. The car park is clearly signposted and is open 8am to 9pm (summer) and 8am to 6pm (winter). Interesting fact said to come from the The name Blawhorn is ge of Blackridge was a days when the local villa between Edinburgh tion sta midway coaching was used as a viewing and Glasgow. Blawhorn s approaching, che coa ing point for watch blown to signal to the when a horn would be hill at Blackridge, hence the n coaching inn dow the name ‘Blow Horn’.

Coxydene Farm Feeds
I
f you’ve got animals in your life you need to know about Coxydene Farm Feeds, near East Calder.
Their huge building is packed to the rafters with food, bedding and accessories for all types of animals from small furry pets such as guinea pigs and rabbits through to supplies for the serious small-holder with poultry, pigs, sheep and goats – and of course all things equestrian. Coxydene Farm Feeds was established seven years ago by David Blain, who started out supplying food for the racing-pigeon market. David is still racing pigeons as well as running a beef farm locally, and pigeon supplies are still an important part of Coxydene during the racing season they supply feed to pigeon-racers all over the Central Belt. For the moment though, heading into winter, it is the horse and pony owners who are heading to Coxydene Farm Feeds. If you bring your horses or ponies in over the winter, Coxydene Farm Feeds are able to supply all the bedding items you need including rubber matting, shavings and wood pellets. They have a huge range of feeds from all the big suppliers including Baileys, TopSpec, Spillers and Dengie as well as haylage – small and large bales. Shirley, who has been with Coxydene since they started 7 years ago, is very knowledgeable about all the feeds they have in stock and will be delighted to help you.
24
The other animals to be thinking about specially at this time of the year are the wild birds. Coxydene Farm Feeds sell wild bird feed in bags from 2.5kg up to 20kg – so you can buy a little or in bulk. They do of course also stock full range of feeds for cage and aviary birds including Bucktons and Versele-Laga
So pop into Coxydene Farm Feeds and see what they have to offer. You won’t find Christmas-wrapped stocking filler doggie treats nor a fashionable pink bejewelled collar for your cat, but you will find a great range of feeds and bedding at competitive pricing. Whenever I’m in at Coxydene getting food for my chickens, I always stock up on food for the cat too as their Whiskas pouches are significantly cheaper than supermarket prices. Call Coxydene Farm Feeds on 01506 881142. They are open Monday to Friday 8am to 6pm and Saturday 8am to 5pm
