Editor’s Message Welcome to the August issue of the Konect Directory. One of the best things about producing this magazine is finding out all about the different interest groups there are in the local area. Besides the huge variety of local businesses, we get approached by many different groups to be included in the magazine, and this month I was interested to learn that Livingston has its own roller derby league – a lesser known sport that you can read about on page 8. I hope the summer holidays have been going well for those who've got children off school – it's been perfect weather for exploring and enjoying the local area if you've stayed home this year. It will soon be time to think about the new term, don't forget to browse the Clubs and Classes pages for activities, sports and hobbies for all ages. Thanks for reading the Konect Directory!

New Town Roller Girls By New Town Roller Girls

What is Roller Derby? Roller derby is an adrenaline filled, full contact sport which is rapidly growing in popularity worldwide. Two teams of fourteen compete in a bout with up to five team members on track at any one time. The scoring player (the "jammer") scores points by lapping members of the opposing team, while her teammates attempt to assist their own jammer by pushing or whipping her through the pack, forcing opposing team members out of her way and hindering the opposing jammer by blocking her path or hitting her out of bounds. Play is fast and action-packed, making roller derby an exciting sport for spectators as well as skaters.

R

The face of the sport has changed greatly from its origins in the banked-track roller skating marathons of the 1930s. Having become a form of sports entertainment in subsequent years where showmanship was of greater importance than sporting ability, roller derby has undergone a resurgence since the turn of the century. It is now played on a flat track rather than a banked track, making it easier for groups of players to form leagues and train and teams are springing up all over the country. It has become so popular worldwide that it’s being considered as a new inclusion in the 2020 Olympic Games. Predominately a sport played by women, there are around twelve women’s leagues in Scotland as well as some men’s and co-ed teams. Who are New Town Roller Girls? New Town Roller Girls (NTRG) are West Lothian’s only women’s roller derby league. Founded in 2011 we have around 20 members ranging in age from 18 to 40ish. There is no such thing as a typical derby girl, we come from all walks of life, are all shapes and sizes and of varying degrees of ability and fitness. To compete in bouts, players must achieve 8

a minimum level of skills as well as pass a rules test and most team members are working towards passing their “mins” while the 6 team members who have already passed are practicing by playing in closed bouts called scrimmages with other local leagues. All this is building to our first public bouts which are planned for September and October this year. We are starting to look for a permanent home where we can stage bouts and practice on a more regular basis. NTRG are a friendly, welcoming team who skate at Craigswood sports centre every Sunday from 3pm - 6pm as well as socialising off skates - for example at this year’s family and friends BBQ. We are keen to be involved in the West Lothian community and were one of many local groups who raised funds for the Five Sisters Zoo fire fund. How can I take part? NTRG are looking for new skaters (“Fresh Meat”) to join us, as well as people who want to train as referees or help out as a non skating official. Anyone who is 18 or over and interested in trying roller derby should contact newtownrollergirls@ hotmail.co.uk to come along to a training session. We have spare kit that new skaters can borrow, the first session is free and if you haven’t skated before, we’ll teach you all you need to know. Before you know it you’ll have been bitten by the derby bug.

Spotlight on: Chantilly Lace

By Helen-Jane Shearer

W

Holly describes her vision for Chantilly Lace: “When you walk through the door looking for your wedding dress, you need to feel really special. My experience of shopping for a dress was that the shop staff didn't treat it as if it were the most important thing happening to me at that time. But it should be! Like in the movies,” she laughs, “where the bride-to-be gets champagne at her dress fitting and is made to feel really special. That's what Chantilly Lace will be like.”

“When I was looking for my wedding dress, I couldn't find any shops selling non-designer dresses. It was impossible to find a nice dress for less than £1000 - and most are much more.” Holly Sneddon is explaining to me the story behind Chantilly Lace, her new bridal shop opening in Bathgate this month (August). “I thought, 'There has to be a better option, there has to be a way of having a beautiful dress without paying those prices'” So, with her own experience behind her of trailing around countless bridal shops, Holly set about finding a solution. The answer was in importing non-branded dresses at a fraction of the price of the designer brands. And for the past two years, she has been running a very successful online business selling bridesmaids dresses, flower girl dresses, veils and accessories by importing them at a much reduced rate and selling them online. Following the success of this, she is now extending the principal to a full bridal shop, where beautiful, quality and of course affordable bridal dresses will be stocked in addition to her current range of bridesmaids and flower girl dresses. You will be able to visit and see the dresses, have a fitting and choose from a wide range of beautiful dresses that look as stunning as the designer ones, are great quality but leave a much smaller hole in your wedding budget. “I want a shop where anyone, from any walk of life, can come and find a beautiful dress without worrying about the price tag”, she explains. “We stock a wide range of dresses to suit all tastes, from ball gown styles, or modern elegant fish tail dresses, or 50s style....really something for everyone.”

14

What else will be different about Chantilly Lace? “You will be able to buy bridesmaids or flower girl dress on the spot and take it home if we have the size and style in stock that you want. That is very unusual for a bridal shop.” They will have samples of many styles of wedding dresses in stock in sizes 8 – 20, so you will be able to try something your size and then order the style you want. Holly can order in up to size 24. “We also have a huge range of veils in stock, at least 30 different styles, which again you will be able to purchase and take home on the spot.” The shop was in the process of being painted when I spoke with Holly. She explained that the interior décor and feel of it is very important. “Being in a beautifully painted and decorated shop to choose your dress is important, it's all part of the experience.” It sounds like the Chantilly Lace experience is a must for all local bridesto-be. The shop opens at 13 Hopetoun Street, Bathgate, on the 10th of August.

Thought for the Month

I

If you had to consider one thing or piece of advice to give a young adult from your life experience, what would it be? Take a moment to think about perhaps what has created a change within you, a moment of insight, something that has helped you develop and grow as a person. I will share one of my thoughts with you and a few of others I asked. When I reflect on certain situations and experiences I have encountered along the way, I realise I often wanted to change things because it wasn't what I wanted, I often wanted it my way, to control events. This often caused inner conflict which presented itself in the form of strong emotional reaction, possibly even explosive outbursts. When you stop and reflect on this type of encounter what follows is often guilt and shame. What I have discovered is that pausing,

16

Reflecting on life By Tina Gilbert

backing off, looking at things from a different perspective moves you towards acceptance of difficulty and moves you away from always seeking preferred experience. How would it be to accept a difficult experience instead of fighting it? You might feel calmer and more at peace. Other words of wisdom include: don't give up on something you believe in, have determination. Listen to your inner world and the signals it sends you, not bowing to external pressure. Be honest in life. Enjoy every moment as if it were your last and if you see someone without a smile, give them yours. What would your advice be? Tina lives in Livingston and teaches yoga and meditation. Visit her website at http://yogamed.co.uk

Chrisselle's Column

Everything happens for a reason

T

to say is that at the end of the day, every single minute of your life is worth it!

Think of the scariest thing you have ever done, and how absolutely terrified you were to do it – now, no matter the outcome, be it the one you hoped for or the one you dreaded – are you still here? Did the world end? Did it destroy you? The answer is you’re still here, ready for more and you just have to get your brain into thinking the same as your heart and courage. I’ve realised that every little thing that has ever happened in my life has brought me to this exact moment in time, with the people I have around me and the things that I am achieving being results of every bad experience, and more importantly, every good experience. It sounds a lot easier than it is, I’m not going to deny that, but what I’m trying

By Chrisselle Mowatt

Never, ever think that it’s not, and if you ever do, then I have a challenge for you – ask your closest friend three things that they love about you. Then, when you know them write them on some sticky notes and put them on your mirror. Now, anytime that you have a negative thought or experience I want you to replace the negative words with one of these (or all three) and hopefully that will make you realise that what you see in yourself isn’t what everyone else sees – everyone else sees the beautiful, brave and wonderful human being that you are.

Technology

A better reception

T

TV's been around for a long time and we're all familiar with the standard roof aerial's coaxial cable. But what happens when an old-style aerial isn't enough? It might be because your Freeview reception isn't up to scratch, or because you want to upgrade to Freesat - or it might be because you have a Smart TV that's just begging to be connected to your broadband, or because you want to have TVs in multiple rooms. Freeview boxes can be particularly prone to reception problems, especially if they're the fairly cheap ones you can buy in supermarkets. If the signal isn't strong enough you'll encounter picture freezes and the picture degrading into a series of large blocks. Upgrading your aerial to a better one can help address this: the better the signal going in, the better the experience you're going to get from your TV. Remember too that aerials can benefit more than just your TV: you can also buy dedicated aerials for FM radio and DAB radio.

The upgrades that can feed your high-tech TV by satellites, and while many are scrambled plenty aren't; in most cases, accessing them requires a slightly different kind of satellite dish to the one you'd use for Sky. If you've bought a TV in the last few years there's a very good chance it's a smart TV with some kind of internet features: even relatively affordable sets such as Finlux's £269 32F8030-T comes with internet services including BBC iPlayer, Facebook, YouTube and Twitter. While some such TVs include wireless network connections, including the Finlux we've just mentioned, home wireless networks aren't usually up to the job of streaming HD TV - especially if other family members are using the same network for their laptops, tablets or smartphones. For best results we'd recommend a wired broadband connection, which connects to your TV via an Ethernet cable - and we'd make the same recommendation for smart Blu-Ray players with internet features as well as games consoles such as PlayStations and Xboxes.

If the signal's good enough, you can run the aerial to multiple rooms and install extra points without having to install a new aerial. The process is fairly straightforward - your aerial has a box called a splitter, which provides multiple connections for the cables to your new points – but it's important to use the right cable: cheap cables can suffer from interference and poor signal quality. If in doubt, ask a professional installer. Another popular option is Freesat, which offers all the benefits of satellite TV without the expensive monthly subscriptions. With over 150 channels including six free HD ones it's a great service, but of course you'll also need a satellite dish so you can receive it. You'll need a dedicated Freesat SD or Freesat HD box, too, although if you're an ex-Sky customer you should be able to use your existing dish with your new Freesat box. Freesat isn't the only satellite service you can access. Many European channels are broadcast

32

The problem for many households is that the TV, games console or smart Blu-Ray player is nowhere near the internet router, and while you can run Ethernet cabling over door frames and around skirting boards to connect your device to the router the results can be rather unsightly. A professional installer can run the cabling and make it invisible, and we think it's well worth doing: not only will you have the best possible speeds from your internet connection, but you won’t have to look at any unsightly cabling.

Recipe & Food Notes Swedish Lemon Potatoes 500g Waxy potatoes, Anya or Charlotte; half cooked and sliced Gratted zest and juice of a large lemon Spoon of Marmite Black pepper Chopped parsley for decoration 100g butter melted with the Marmite Method Mix the melted butter, Marmite and lemon juice and zest together. Layer up the sliced potatoes in a ovenproof dish, pouring a little butter/lemon/ Marmite mixture over each layer as you go. Dot the top with a little butter to help in the baking. Cover closely with cling wrap and a layer of foil. Bake in the oven at 180C for 35/45 minutes. Baking the dish covered ensures it is moist and the lemon salt taste goes into all the potatoes. This goes well with ham or cold meats and a salad. Classic Mayonnaise Mayonnaise is the basic sauce from which many others are created. Making your own is not difficult but requires a calm steady hand and is much helped by the use of a blender wand However the best texture is achieved by mixing slowly by hand with a wooden spoon or a fork. 2 egg yolks at room temperature 1/2 pint oil; half and half sunflower and refined olive oil. Extra virgin oil has too strong a taste. Method Put the oil in a jug from which it is easy to control the flow. The oil and yolks should be the same temperature. salt, ground black pepper, mustard powder squeeze of lemon juice/ little wine vinegar In a shallow bowl beat the yolks with the salt, pepper and mustard. I use a fork. Slowly DROP by DROP beat in the oil. Gradually the mixture thickens; as it does you can add the oil more quickly and also change to using a wooden spoon. When about half the oil has been used add a little lemon juice or vinegar. Beat it well in.

46

Condiments and Sauces By Anne Pinkerton

Then continue adding the oil until it is all incorporated and you have a glossy, thick, creamy, yellow sauce. The original recipe I was given by an aunt ended with.... “and do not let your mind wander. Good advice; watch the slow development of the emulsion and all will be well! If you are unlucky and the sauce curdles, start again with one egg yolk adding the curdled mixture drop by drop. Rose-Marie Sauce add a little tomato puree and tomato ketchup, a dash of dry sherry, a drop of Tabasco and a tablespoon of whipped double cream to half the basic mayonnaise above.

Coronation Sauce needs a little more work but the real thing is delicious and subtle. 1 small onion finely copped and cooked in 2 teaspoons of oil till transparent. To this add 2 teaspoons mild curry powder and a teaspoon of tomato puree. Cook for 1 minute. Add 1/2 wine glass red wine, 3 tablespoons water, a bay leaf, 2 teaspoons apricot jam and salt and black pepper and a good squeeze of lemon juice. Simmer for 8 to 10 minutes and cool. Sieve the mixture and use to add to taste to mayonnaise. Finally add 2 tablespoons of whipped double cream. Use to coat cooked, cold chicken. Barbeque Sauce is a sauce made of sauces. Mix to taste but starting with about equal quantities of Brown sauce and Tomato ketchup. Add a little Worcester sauce and a drop or 2 of Tabasco. Sweeten with some tomato chutney and sharpen with some Dijon mustard. Mix well. Spread this on chicken thighs and leave them to take in the flavours for 30 minutes before grilling or cooking on the barbeque.

Charity of the Month

A

A new shop is coming to Livingston soon – but it's not just a shop. Kidzeco of Bathgate is a resource centre in every way mainly for families with babies and preschoolers, as well as for people who are socially isolated and want to learn new craft skills. I heard that they are opening a Livingston shop and I went to visit Tracy Murdoch, who runs Kidzeco in Bathgate, to find out more. At first glance, Kidzeco looks like a nice shop for quality second-hand baby goods and children's wear, with a large range of items attractively displayed and a safe play area for your toddler while you browse. And it is of course all of these things - it's a great place to get quality items at a fraction of the cost of buying new. But it is much more than just a shop.

“When my son started to grow out of things, I thought 'What can I do with this, it's too good to throw out'” she explains. She wanted to run a recycled baby goods shop, but also wanted to use it to further her passion for children and families' issues. “I had previously been a Development Worker, which had been an eye-opener for me in terms of the number of families and children in social isolation and difficult circumstances.” So whilst reducing waste and landfill is important – 40 tonnes have been saved from landfill so far via Kidzeco - for Tracy it's more about making things affordable for young families, teaching

48

Kidzeco them how to reuse and recycle things themselves, and being a venue for classes where parents and preschoolers can get involved in fun activities. “The classes are not the sort where you leave the kids, it's very much about parent participation – we end up rolling around on the floor with the children!” says Tracy. “I wanted Kidzeco to be a 'proper' shop from the beginning,” she says, and she has certainly achieved this. Items are organised into sections, making it easy to browse for what you want. There is a wide range of prams, pushchairs, cots and accessories as well as kids' clothes, swimwear, toys and books. All items are cleaned and quality checked before being offered for re-sale. There is a play area for your toddler while you browse and a separate parenting room with a changing table and comfy sofas for breastfeeding. But Kidzeco is all about affordability and reusing, not just re-selling. They have lots of ideas for re-using things at home, or making things out of items you already have. A room to the side has sewing machines, fabrics and projects in various stages of completion including baby quilts, bags and bunting. This is where “Fun with Fabrics” classes are held, where you can come and learn skills in arts and crafts. The group makes quilts, blankets, clothes and accessories from recycled fabrics. They recently donated twenty quilts to an Alzeimer research fund-raiser, and some knitted blankets donated to Dogs Trust. So other charities benefit too. In addition, Kidzeco's in-house designer can make bespoke handmade clothes from remnants of new fabric donated by fabric shops – fabric that would otherwise be thrown out, but is turned into beautiful new items. The most satisfying aspect of Kidzeco for Tracy is the involvement of young people who, funded by various grants, are bringing their skills and energy to Kidzeco, when they would otherwise be unemployed. There is always something going on at

Kidzeco, and Tracy has many more plans - she would like to set up a skill-sharing group, in the near future. Kidzeco will be opening in Livingston in August or September, location to be confirmed. Like their facebook page for updates. You can also visit at 11 King Street, Bathgate, or a call them on 01506 815534. Kidzeco is a not-for-profit community interest company. www.kidzeco.net Volunteers and donations All donations of babies' and children's clothing, equipment and furniture are accepted – almost everything can be used in some way, either to re-sell or be turned into other things. We can collect larger items from your home, please call us to arrange uplift. Also craft items such as beads, jewellery, trims, buttons and fabric donations are needed too. We are always looking to expand our team and have various volunteering opportunities including retail, warehousing, admin, play and craft work. If you would like to be involved, please get in touch.

Kids parties Kidzeco also has a party room for hire at their Bathgate premises, with a choice of standard or themed room Special offers: Two hours soft play party £75 Two hours disco party £50
