Editor’s Message If you've ever wondered why the sign for Eliburn is a little castle, or why the references to “peel” around Eliburn, you can read the article on page 8 about the history of Eliburn's Peel Park, and a special garden planted there around 350 years ago. And anyone with an interest in the healing power of plants will be interested to read that at that time doctors were influential in botany as well as in medicine. This issue is choc-a-bloc full with local businesses as usual who can supply

everything you need for house, garden and family, and some fantastic offers for Konect readers. Please support local people and check this magazine first for anything you need! As usual, a technology update, What's On, Charity of the Month and all other regular columns are included. I hope you enjoy the October issue, please let us know what you think of it and any features you would like to see regularly.

The Laird O’ Livingston’s Legacy By Yvonne MacMillan

E

Eliburn South’s Peel Park was once the location of the Laird O’ Livingston’s physic garden. Patrick Murray (1634 – 1671) had a passion for collecting and growing plants. Described as “one of the most promising men of science of his time”, Murray’s physic garden in the grounds of his home at Livingston Peel stocked 1,000 species of plants, and when he died this invaluable collection became the foundation for today’s Edinburgh Botanic Gardens. Physic gardens were European medieval medicinal gardens where medicine, botany and gardening inter-linked and doctors were as well known and influential in botany as medicine. Botanic gardens followed physic gardens when whole continents began to be discovered and shiploads of new species were brought back to Europe for scientific interest. A botanical pioneer and “famous for collecting seeds, plants and exotica”, Patrick Murray was a good friend of Robert Sibbald (1641 – 1722) and Andrew Balfour (1630 – 1694), two Scottish physicians and botanists who went on to found the Royal College of Physicians in Edinburgh. The garden at Livingston inspired them to start a medical garden in Edinburgh – a place where supplies of fresh plants and herbs for medical prescriptions were on hand and medical students would study botany. Sibbald and Balfour wrote an official list for the medical profession of acceptable

drugs and how to make them (The Pharmacopoeia, published 29 years later in 1699), a great advance in regulating medical care in the 17th century. Work on the first physic garden for physicians in Edinburgh began in 1670. The Murray family seat at Livingston Peel was a fortified stone tower on a large, earthen mound and surrounded by a moat built in 1124 by de Leving, a Flemish nobleman invited to Scotland by King David 1.* In return for military service to the king, de Leving was given a grant of land. Other more humble dwellings sprang up around the tower with the people attracted by work and its protection. The settlement became known as Leving’s toun, then as time passed this name became Livingston. A street sign near the entrance to Peel Park holds on to the old spelling - Leving Place – a connection with the past. Originally from Elibank in Peebles-shire, the Murray family acquired Livingston Peel and surrounding lands in 1512. Livingston was a huge but sparsely populated parish (around 2,000 inhabitants), stretching 10 miles from Dechmont in the east to Fauldhouse in the west. Mainly, it was rough, open countryside, dotted with small patches of cultivated land and large areas of wet moorland like Drumshoreland, Easter Inch, Whitburn and Fauldhouse moors.

Livingston Peel - The LDC built a grassy mound with cobblestone moat, wooden bridge and steps to the top where the original Peel would have stood.

Spotlight on: 1st Choice Living

T

The former adult learning centre building on Glasgow Road in Bathgate was totally refurbished last year by 1st Choice Living, the local home improvements company who now occupy the building as their showroom. Quality of workmanship is a priority for any home improvements project, so when selecting a company it's good to be able to inspect their work. A visit to 1st Choice Living's showroom is an opportunity to see the range of what they can do – the building had been empty for a couple of years before they acquired it and refurbished it from floor to ceiling, so everything you see has been done by the fitters who will be working on your own project. I visited the showroom to browse what they have to offer and to meet Derrick Findlay, who owns 1st Choice, and learn more about the business. Derrick has lived in Bathgate for just over 10 years. After gaining experience in various industries he settled in the glazing industry, working for a large glazing company for several years before deciding it was time to run his own show. So in 2008 he launched 1st Choice Glazing with £500 worth of stock, operating from his garage at home in Bathgate. The business has expanded rapidly and the team now numbers 21 local employees and has branched out to cover not just glazing but kitchens and bathrooms too. So what is the secret of their success? “We're customer-focused,” says Derrick.”I think it's all about how we face challenges, and our attitude to customer service. When you book a home visit appointment with 1st Choice, our appointments are a maximum of 35 minutes – you won't have a pushy sales person in your house for an hour 14

pressuring you to buy from us.” Word of mouth recommendations have played a big part and Derrick lets their workmanship speak for itself. “All our fitters are employed by us so we have tight quality control. When taking on new fitters we look for people who take pride in their work.” The new showroom opened its doors in December 2012. Derrick has retained the separate rooms inside the building so it feels more like a real home, unlike the typical cavernous showroom, allowing you to get a better feel for what the various installations are like in a real home. There is a welcoming atmosphere and it was buzzing with visitors and employees when I was there. There is a kitchen/sunroom area (where I enjoyed an expertly-made latte from kitchen!), various bathroom ideas as well as blinds, shutters and accessories. “Our showroom is unique in the Central Belt in that you can see kitchens, bathrooms, conservatories, the full spectrum of products in the one building” explains Derrick. Whether your home improvement project is large or small, make 1st Choice Living on Glasgow Road, Bathgate, your first port of call to see the showroom, chat to their friendly staff and see how they can help. Thought for the Month

W

When we use the term stress, everyone knows what we are talking about. It's not just a state of mind but a process explaining the way we interact with the world around us and within us. We can often feel stress from pressures at work, others' expectation of us, time. Our thoughts can cause us stress as they are often unwanted and too many of them. The overwhelmed mind impacts on the body and incapacitates us to face life calmly and wholeheartedly. Our conditioned response to stress is to be busy all of the time to avoid seeing what is there in our lives and minds and we think by doing this we avoid it. Unfortunately this is often counterproductive and things often get much worse by running away from them. The paradox is that when you turn toward and see what is there, stop and

16

Releasing stress By Tina Gilbert

be still, it begins releasing. How do we do this? By taking the opportunity to meet internal and external stresses that are causing the chaos, and meeting them with open-hearted curiosity and kindness. How we perceive and respond to things determines how much stress we have. If we don’t stop, look and listen to the signals we are being sent then we will travel down the road to meltdown. In mindfulness we can pay attention to what is occurring in each moment, tune into the physical body and learn to begin softening and releasing the tightness we habitually hold. Start the journey of releasing stress. Tina lives in Livingston and teaches yoga and meditation. Visit her website at http://yogamed.co.uk

Property Matters Buying on Instinct By Craig Turpie

R

Recent research concurs with our own view that most buyers buy on instinct, typically viewing their eventual home no more than twice before making a decision to buy. Buying a property certainly appears to be a decision of the heart over the head. In other words, the “I’ll know it when I see it” approach turns out to be quite reliable. Despite the detail offered about their property by sellers when they instruct an estate agent to market their home, buyers actually register their preferences with a very broad brush indeed. They seldom, if ever, ask what type of boiler is at the property, or if there is a double wash basin in the bathroom or an aerial point in the sitting room before viewing it. These are small details which have little bearing on whether the buyer will find the property to be a suitable home. Once certain non-negotiables, such as price, minimum amount of accommodation, and the general location of the property have been satisfied, buyers are primarily influenced by “How does it feel?” and “Could we be happy here?”. These elements are intangible, but if the right button has been pushed, virtually nothing will stop the buyer from wanting to buy the property. Of course, the brain then tries to over-rule the heart, forcing the buyer to revisit the property, just to make sure. During this second viewing the buyer will take a more detailed look at the property, and may take more notice of the type of fittings and the structural condition.

issue?” This question checks to see that your Hypnotherapist has the relevant experience for helping you.

Make sure that when you make initial contact with the Hypnotherapist that you ask some questions such as: “How many clients do you see per week?” A full-time hypnotherapist will be seeing over 10 clients per week and will quite possibly have their own clinic or therapy room. Another good question to ask is: “Do you have direct experience of dealing with my

A good Hypnotherapist will be able to answer your questions over the telephone and should be able to set you mind at ease. If not, then maybe they are not the right hypnotherapist for you and you should try contacting someone else. Also check out the Hypnotherapist's website. It should be informative and professional looking and should answer all your questions but if in doubt ask to meet the Hypnotherapist for a free consultation. Any good Hypnotherapist will be delighted to give you a free consultation to allow you to ask any questions, see their place of work and set your mind at ease.

As a guide you should always make sure that the Hypnotherapist you choose is a member of a Professional Regulatory Body. One of the biggest is the Complementary & Natural Healthcare Council (CNHC). If your Hypnotherapist is a member you can be assured of a high level of professionalism and expertise, as the CNHC check to make sure that they hold relevant qualifications, insurance and that they undergo continuous professional development.

Chrisselle's Column

L

Like I mentioned last month, society is always changing, and these changes can be wonderful. Youth Culture alone is one of the most diverse cultures that Scotland has, from school students to business owners and everything in between. But, one thing that has passed itself onto Youth Culture from the generation before it is judgement; it does not matter who you are, or how successful you are, if you do something outwith the ‘norm’ then you are open to judgement. Prime examples of this are when young people become parents, or leave a job that they’re unhappy in. What someone decides to do with their life, regardless of age, is their own choice and should not be seen as ‘up for discussion’ by the rest of society.

Everyone's a Celebrity By Chrisselle Mowatt

The rise in intrusion to celebrities' and public figures’ lives seems to have given everyone this idea that whatever is going on in anybody’s lives is everyone else's property to discuss, debate and judge, when in reality nobody’s life is anyone else's business. Young people are going through enough at this point in their lives, is it really essential that everyone and their Aunt Maggie think it’s okay to discuss the decisions that they are making? Young people make mistakes, heck, humans make mistakes. It’s important to remember this from behind your picket fence.

icare Pet Crem and Browning's Funeral Directors

T

“The idea behind this collaboration is to provide the same level of excellent service for all the family.” Alex Baxter of icare Pet Crem, Whitburn, is telling me about the new collaboration between his business and Browning's Funeral Directors. Alex set up his pet cremation service two years ago after being distressed at the lack of a sensitive and respectful cremation service for grieving pet owners. The new collaboration with Browning's Funeral Directors suggested itself as a way of providing a service for the whole family – pets included – as well as helping both businesses keep costs down for their clients. Browning's is a longestablished funeral directors and at their Whitburn premises they have arrangement rooms, viewing rooms and service rooms. icare Pet Crem is now based at the same location. Products such as caskets, urns, scatter containers and a range of memorial

34

A new collaboration

products are available for both services at Whitburn. This is the first collaboration of its type in Scotland, although it has been more common in the United States for a while. So far Alex reports positive reception to the idea. “Families that have used Browning's are pleased that they can now offer a service for pets too via icare Pet Crem. For more information regarding funeral plans or arrangements for all members of the family, please visit our website or contact Alex, Gary or Eric on any of the numbers listed in the advert opposite. Browning's Funeral Directors are here to help and advise in your time of need. Basic funerals start from £2400. Technology

Light up your life

A

As we come into the winter, we start to need more light in our homes both day and night. There seemed little new in the lighting market for many years, but this has all changed now and from energy saving and long life to remote control, the technology has come out of the dark ages. The most obvious change in lighting is the end of incandescent bulbs and the arrival of low energy lighting. While early CFL (compact fluorescent) bulbs were pretty horrible and couldn't be dimmed, today's models are far nicer and can even be bought with remote controls to dim and brighten them. The big news though, is the rise of LED. Light-emitting diodes aren't just incredibly cheap to run; because they don't get as hot as other bulbs, they are much more versatile. They're already a common sight in car headlamps, and you can replace most of your house's incandescent bulbs with LEDs for relatively little cash - including halogen downlighters, which were previously difficult and expensive to replace with LEDs. When you combine LEDs with sensors, things start getting interesting. For around £12 you can get LED motion detectors, which light up stairs and other potential hazard areas and a LED in an external motion-sensing security light will give you the same peace of mind as before without the enormous energy drain.

As technology gets smaller and cheaper, it also gets smarter. Wouldn't it be great if your lighting linked in to your wireless network and could be controlled by your

52

Sensors, smartphones and serious savings By Gary Marshall

phone? That's already available: Philips' Hue lightbulbs do just that, enabling you to change both brightness and colours - so you might use a gently brightening yellow glow to wake you in the morning, or point at a photo to get the lighting to match its colours. It'll be a while before such technology is every day affordable though - a starter pack will currently set you back £179 for one controller and three bulbs but it's still quite exciting. Another exciting idea is Wemo, Belkin's wireless technology for home automation. You can already buy Wemoenabled plugs, and now you can buy Wemoenabled light switches. Once again it isn't cheap - expect to pay around £39.99 for a light switch and the same for a plug socket that you can use to control table lamps - but the technology is interesting: you can combine Wemo with the “If This Then That” web service, so for example you could add a motion detector to switch on the hall light when you open the front door or get the light switch to activate at sunset each evening. If you like the idea of motion sensors, light sensors or timers for your lighting but would rather not shell out for expensive smartphone-connected kit, you don't have to: a simple but effective motion and sound-sensing light switch will set you back less than £10, an electronic timer light switch will cost less than £10 and one with a built-in sensor will only cost a few pounds more. The smartphonecompatible hardware may have the wow factor, but lower-tech options won't give your wallet the "ow" factor.

Recipe & Food Notes

P

People have used vinegar in food, as a preservative and for their health for thousands of years. Most food cultures have their own vinegar. Our word comes from French “vin aigre” or sour wine. However good vinegar is not just sour wine, great skill and controlled production is required. Many flavours can be added to vinegar lemon peel, garlic, chilli, tarragon or mixed spices are the most common. Making flavoured vinegars is easy. It only requires sterile bottles, non -metallic seals, good quality vinegar and the fruit, herbs or spices preferred. White wine vinegar seems to take herb flavours better than red wine vinegar, which is better with chilli or pickling spices. Fruit, for example raspberry, damson, blackberry or elderberry is better with red wine vinegar but lemon peel or flowers will be nicer with cider or white wine vinegar. Combine the ingredients you want to use in the clean bottles and leave for about one month to infuse. They will keep until the fruit or other flavouring is no longer covered.

Mushroom and Blackberry Vinegar salad starter 450g small cap mushrooms sliced black pepper, salt 1 onion finely sliced 5 tablespoons walnut or extra virgin olive oil 3 tablespoons blackberry vinegar chopped parsley, thyme or chives Bring the oil and vinegar to nearly boiling point and then pour over the seasoned vegetables. Leave to cool. Scatter the herbs on top. Eat with crusty bread. Warm salads of carrots, spinach or finely sliced red cabbage can be made this way with the best vinegar to enhance the flavour. Pickled eggs Excellent with autumn salads and cold meats. 12 cold, just hard boiled hen’s eggs or 24 quail’s eggs ,Shelled

1 ½ pts. Malt vinegar or distilled vinegar or cider vinegar 6 cloves garlic, peeled 1 level table spoon each white pepper-corns and allspice Small piece root ginger if liked Have a wide necked glass jar ready sterilized. Boil the vinegar and spices gently for 10 minutes. Leave to go cold. Pack the eggs into the jar(s), cover with the vinegar. Leave the spices in if you wish or, for a milder brew, strain them out. Cover and leave to mature. Keep in a cool dark place. Ready after a month. Chutneys can be made from many vegetables or fruits, and are an ideal way of using up ripe or green tomatoes, courgettes, squash, plums or windfall apples (cut out any damaged or blemished parts). At this time of year there are gluts. The other essential ingredients for successful chutneys are vinegar, sugar, salt and spice. Added flavour can come from onions, chilli and garlic. For safety reasons, always use stainless steel or aluminium pans for chutney. Always use clean, sterilized jars with plastic screw tops for preserving. Cellophane can be used under a metal screw-top to prevent it being rotted by the vinegar. Tomato Chutney 3 kg ripe tomatoes skinned and deseeded 100g salt 6 large onions thinly sliced 250g soft brown sugar 6 green peppers de-seeded and finely sliced grated rind and juice 2 lemons 2 1/2 pts. Vinegar teaspoon each: ground ginger, pepper & mace Put all the ingredients in a large pan and simmer slowly till thick. This can take up to 2 hours. Put into jars and leave to mature for a month or more. Apples can be used in place of the peppers.
