Hello neighbours Welcome to your new community magazine, The Konect Directory for Livingston. We launched this edition in the south Livingston area last month where it received an enthusiastic welcome. We’ve been producing this magazine for the Calders area for just over two years and it has become and indispensable handbook in local households – an entertaining read with specially-written articles on local people, local history and local businesses. The aim is to put local people in touch with the great range of businesses and facilities that we have on our doorsteps. This month the focus is on the north area of Livingston and we’ve been looking into the history of Deans when it was a village known as Livingston Station. The Konect Directory also runs a monthly crossword competition, and Steven Belford Butcher of Deans Main Street is offering a voucher for £15 worth of meat. With grocery bills rising all the time, it’s well worth trying the crossword on page 36 for your chance to win some good quality meat for your freezer!

We’ve also put together pages of useful information, what’s on and a list of clubs and classes in the area. I’m sure there’s more going on that we have listed on the What’s On page for this month, so if you have an event on in October that you would like to promote or you’re involved in a community club that’s not listed, please let me know and we’ll make sure it’s included next month. The Konect Directory will be delivered to you free of charge every second month. We are looking for local people to help deliver it, so if you would like to be paid for a few hours’ gentle exercise each month please contact distribution@konectdirectory.co.uk or call 01506 668580 Please support our local businesses, and thanks for reading the Konect Directory!

The Deans Century By Helen-Jane Shearer

riving around Deans industrial estate, it’s difficult to imagine that you are driving over the site of shale mines that sunk to depths of hundreds of feet and of a towering bing that dominated the landscape for miles around. Over the course of a century, a mind-boggling amount of labour transformed the fields into one of West Lothian’s most productive shale oil sites with seven mines and a crude oil works, then removed it all and replaced it with the Deans we see today. The first Livingston Station works were opened here in 1884, and the industry dominated every part of local life until the last miner’s rows and the bings were dismantled in the 1970s, just under a century later. Though there is little left to see today, it has nevertheless left its mark in Deans - not just in the few buildings that do remain, but more importantly in the collective memory. It has been landscaped, built on and incorporated into Livingston but still retains its own community memory of what was life in Livingston Station. Before the arrival of the shale oil companies, the land was a mixture of cultivated fields and woodland. There is some evidence of medieval farmsteads and possibly an ancient standing stone at Starlaw. In 1884 though, change came with the opening of the Livingston Station oil works here by the West Lothian Oil Company, on the Edinburgh to Bathgate railway. Due to mismanagement the venture was unsuccessful until the Pumpherston Oil Company took over in 1894. They restructured the site as the Deans Works, and the village of Livingston Station was built by them to house its workforce. It was fairly typical of many mining villages in the area. The Pumpherston Oil Company had a good reputation for providing reasonable facilities for its workforce. The housing consisted mainly of terraced rows of tworoomed houses with gardens and, as was noted in a housing survey carried out in 1914, “a generous scullery”. One room was the living room with the kitchen range for cooking and heating, The other room was where the family slept. Frequently there were two families in each small house
due to shortage in housing as the works expanded. Some houses had coal cellars, and the houses on the end of each terrace had an attic bedroom with a window on the gable wall, attracting a slightly higher rent. The village also incorporated drying greens and play areas. Initially there was no piped water for the houses, so water was hauled in by the householder from shared standpipes in the streets. Also shared were the toilet facilities – some shared between two houses, some for many more. A small amount of further accommodation for Deans workers was at Deans Cottages, thirty six two -roomed houses that had been built by the West Lothian Oil Company and located to the north of the works. The rows formed three sides of a square, with shared privvies in the centre of the square. The M8 now runs straight through the square. Typical of many mining communities, there was a healthy social life in Livingston Station. An annual summer gala, outings, and the life that revolved around the “store” -the local branch of the successful West Calder Co-operative on the Main Street. Pumpherston Oil Company built a community centre – the Institute incorporating a library, bowling green and other facilities including showers : the 1914 housing survey notes that “spray baths are to be had at the Institute, for a small charge.” The Institute building still stands in Deans. There were seven mines in the Deans Works: Mines 1 and 2 known as Caputhall, Deans No 3 known as Starlaw, and Deans Nos 5,6, and 7. They had their share of mining accidents, which were sadly not unusual across West Lothian. Fatal

accidents in the Deans mines are recorded at various times as a result of falling shale, runaway hutches and explosions. Competition from cheaper sources of oil led to the closure of West Lothian’s oil works. The Deans works closed at the end of the 1940s and over the next three decades the buildings and village were dismantled. Most of the works buildings were taken down in the 1950s; the miner’s rows were demolished during the course of the 60s and 70s; the huge bing was quarried in the 70s and used as construction material for the M8. The workers who lived in Deans Cottages would have found it ironic that the shale
they dug up from the ground and piled high on the bings would eventually be taken down again and used to lay a motorway right over their houses! The new Deans is continually evolving as part of Livingston, whilst building, literally, on its mining roots. Thought for the Month By Tina Gilbert
Being not doing How often in life do we take the time to just be? In our busy and often stressful lives we are constantly doing; always on the go, always thinking of the events of the past or plans for the future. The unsettled mind is jumping from one thing to the next rarely taking the time to just be in the present moment. As you read this, stop and take a moment to be present, take a deeper breath in and a longer breath out. Take a few moments for yourself to be present with your breath, count the breath in for three and count the breath out for three, know that you are breathing. When you breathe out relax your face and body, soften and enjoy the experience of this

www.goldilockshairsalon.com When is a denture not a denture? Many people put up with loose and uncomfortable dentures, making eating difficult and lowering self-confidence. At No9 Dental Practice we can provide advanced alternatives to traditional dentures by using dental implants. These can fix a denture with a studlike fastening, keeping the denture firmly in place and removing the need for a plate in the roof of the mouth.
We recently fitted an implantretained denture for Mrs Callan, who said: “I am delighted with the result, I wish I had done it long before now. It has been worth every penny. I have been recommending it to all my friends. I can smile and chew confidently now.”

““I've I've made four thousand six hundr hundred ed medium-sized quiches and personally baked two tons of li light ght crust pastry. And for what?” As a clergy wife, Grace has spent a lifetime on best behaviour. Now, following the death of her husband, she is enj enjoying the new-found freedom to do and say exactly as she pleases. The return of her eccentric missionar missionary sister, along with some disturbing revelations, forces Grace to confront the truth of her marriage. Set in a garden complete with real gr grass, plants and a stream with running water, the play is filled with sharp-edged comedy and probing wit. Richard Everett’s much-acclaimed play play,, starring Penelope Keith, ran for two sell-out UK tours, playing to over 100,000 people and grossing over £2 million. “A warm, glowing, serious comedy, like an Ayckbourn play finished by JM Barrie” The Sunday Times “A comedy with real emotion, scratch the surface and you’ll find interesting undercurrents rippling the water ……………… adultery, miscarriage, divorce and deception are just some of the problems the writer beds down among well-received jokes” London Evening Standard

No job too small… By Karen Murray
Joinery | Painting | Tiling | Sash Window Repairs etc
K
ris Keegan is ‘West Lothian Handyman’ - offering quality workmanship at affordable prices. In today’s constricted financial times, we all want value for money and when we need renovation and maintenance work done on our homes, knowing it will of the highest quality gives us peace of mind. Kris left school and undertook an apprenticeship in floor laying which he continued in for a number of years before moving to Edinburgh. Unable to get work in the field, he took a job in a cinema proving himself by working up the ladder to management. However, he soon wanted to get back into the building industry so he took labouring jobs in the joinery field, especially working on the repair of sash and case windows. “I learned to do just about everything related to joinery and general building maintenance and decided I could probably set up my own business,” he says. “I could see while working these jobs that there was a problem - the same jobs would come up over and over again and often those working on them would begin to see the work as a sort of conveyor belt, cutting corners all the time to do the job more quickly and get on to the next. “ This, he says, was particularly so of the repair of sash and case windows, which has become a favourite project for Kris. “I decided if I set up a business I would do each job for a fair price and do it right.” Kris also makes a point of stating that no job is too small. Often the case with many handymen is that they don’t want to take on a very small job. Kris on the other hand has been known to change a light bulb or hang a picture if that is what is required. “I am often asked to do one simple job, but more often than not there will be a number of small jobs around the house that need to be done and I really like the variety,” he smiles, adding that if he is ever asked to do something he feels unqualified to do he is happy to recommend someone trustworthy to do it.

West Lothian Handyman was established in 2009 but Kris continued to work on various other projects as well. However since April this year, it has been a full time business and business has really taken off. Kris has also embarked on a series of studies to become fully qualified in a number of disciplines. He has already completed his SVQ2 in wall and floor tiling and will be qualified in joinery and carpentry by the end of September. “Qualifications are not entirely necessary but they do give many customers peace of mind and I am broadening my scope. They are also required for commercial jobs under the CSCS (Construction Skills Certification Scheme) Scheme.” As the name of Kris’ company suggests he mainly covers West Lothian at the moment but is quite happy to travel further afield. When it comes to working on the repair of sash and case windows, he often works in Edinburgh but there are many older properties in West Lothian with these wonderful windows especially in places like Mid Calder and Kris wants the get the word out that they can be repaired and maintained affordably, rather than simply replaced with UPVC. So when you are in need of a handyman, Kris is unlikely to say the job is too small and you are assured of a fair price for the job done right. An Evening Walk in Eliburn By Karen Murray
I
t never ceases to amaze me how many diverse walks there are without traveling too far from the local area. My children often nag me for a visit to Eliburn Park. For those of you unaware of the delights of this wonderful place, it is the park of every child’s dream, complete with everything from flying fox to climbing frames, gigantic slides to huge roundabouts.
Old Eliburn Wo
od
However, on one such visit, I realised that there were also several walking routes in the vicinity of the park with paths criss-crossing the entire area. If you have children you can safely leave to play, then why not head off and explore the pathways while they have fun? Alternatively if you have younger children, you can dangle the carrot of fun in the play park after an invigorating walk! A new park built around an ancient woodland, the landscaping incorporates a whole series of spirals built into grass mounds, benches and the like. They give added interest to any walk, however, it is the natural landscape that I find more inspiring when I wander the various pathways. The simplest walk is around the Eliburn Reservoir just below the play park. A haven for anglers, it is best not to disturb them as you walk. It is also a haven for ducks and moorhens The reservoir and as you walk you can hear all manner of birdsong in the early evening. This will only take around 15 minutes so if you fancy a longer walk, you can walk down the west side of the reservoir and keep going rather than cross the dam at the end. This will take you into Livingston Old Wood, rather like entering another time zone. It is hard to believe you are
26
surrounded in new build housing estates and dual carriageways as you walk the zigzagging pathways. You will eventually come to a surfaced path which is actually national cycle route 75. If you turn left you come to a pretty stone bridge that spans Lochshot Burn. This makes for a good resting spot and if you have your mobile handy you can text ELIBURN to 70300 to hear the Woodland Trust’s audio about Eliburn Wood (audio point 4). You can then retrace your footsteps, this time going over the dam and walking up the other side of the reservoir. Another option is to start the walk the same way, this time heading over the dam but instead of continuing around the reservoir, take the steps leading into the woods at the end of the dam. Follow the path through the woods and into open space, basically following the perimeter of the park, crossing over Houston Road, then turning left following the line of the road, before crossing back over and into the park once more. This second circular route is around 1.25 miles in length. These are just a few ways you can enjoy walking in the surrounds of Eliburn Park and wood, but it would be very easy to spend hours wandering the myriad pathways, some prettier than others, which means you can find a different route every time you go.

Vet’s Tip: Rabbit Care – Diet
T
he domestic rabbit is not far removed from its wild relatives we see hopping around our local roundabouts. Therefore, our fluffy bunnies we have at home should be eating a similar diet. Yet many owners believe that a bowl of bunny muesli and the odd carrot will be enough. Wild rabbits do not have the convenience of being handed a large bowl of nuggets or muesli to eat every day – their main diet is grass, dried grasses, weeds, twigs and wild flowers. A rabbit’s daily diet should consist of 80% hay/fresh grass, 15% vegetables and fruit, and just 5% pelleted food. The way that a rabbit eats hay and grass provides wear to its teeth, as the jaw is moved from side to side. Rabbits have continually growing teeth and hay/grass is the only substance
louise@westlothianpetsitters.co.uk www.westlothianpetsitters.co.uk
that prevents teeth from overgrowing. Pelleted food (either nuggets or muesli) is chewed with an up and down motion of the jaw, so provides no wearing down of the teeth. Rabbit muesli is often high in sugars and low in fibre, neither of which are good. Nuggets (where every pellet is the same) mean the rabbit cannot select the good bits out the food (like many do with muesli), and are much higher in fibre. So if your bunny’s diet consists of muesli and not much else – it’s time for a change! Pile in the hay (as much as they want – it has no calories!), explore the veg aisle in the supermarket and cut down on those pellets. Your bunny will have a much happier, healthier life. New Business for West Lothian ADVERTISMENT
i
Care Pet Cremation and Burial Services is a brand new business in West Lothian and I would like to introduce myself and the business to its residents and pet owners. My name is Alex Baxter and after realising the lack of such a local service within West Lothian I decided to investigate current practices and provide a more caring and personal service to pet owners. Having lost my pet in 2010, the decision to offer this service became my ambition. I hadn’t given any thought to what we would do when she died, and when she did I was so grief-stricken I couldn’t make decisions which seemed so cold and uncaring. Had a local service like this been offered to me prior to my pet’s illness I would have felt relieved that someone else cared as much for my dog as I had. At iCare Pet Crem, we aim to provide the same level of dignity and professionalism to your pets as we would if they were human. They would be collected and handled sensitively by iCare Pet Crem staff, including collection from your local veterinary practice should they die there, and would then be transported in an iCare vehicle and never with clinical waste, which is unfortunately how some current practices operate. Your pet would be cremated individually so you are guaranteed to receive your pet’s ashes, which again is something that is not always carried out elsewhere. Our pets are integrated into our families and into our hearts and when they die, we grieve for them in the same way as losing a family member. At iCare Pet Crem, we are offering a registration and pre-payment plan so that you don’t need to worry about these final details in your time of grief. Most of us don’t think

about the death of our family pets, but when the time comes, you can be secure in the knowledge that your pet is given a caring, sensitive and dignified send-off. Your pet’s ashes can be collected or hand delivered to your address in a scatter tube and suede bag or a casket or urn of your choice. Sometimes people don’t know what to do when their pet dies, so this method allows you to decide whether you would choose to bury the scatter tube, scatter your pet’s ashes in their favourite place, or sometime in the future transfer their ashes to a sealed casket, tribute box or picture frame. There is no rush to make these decisions, we will support and guide you all the way. To register your Pet with iCare Pet Crem please call us or visit our website and complete the on-line registration form. This service is free and can make such a difference coping with a loss in the future. iCare Pet Crem is a West Lothian business here to serve the needs of West Lothian pet owners. Please feel free to give us a call at any time or visit our website for more information on the full list of services we offer including our Pet register and Pre Payment plan. 29
Recipe and September Food Notes By Anne Pinkerton
S
eptember is an exciting month for food. Early autumn brings the start of the fruit harvest, mushrooms, nuts and game are all coming into season. Peaches are at their cheapest, grapes from Europe are delicious, plumbs and damsons arrive from England and apples and brambles are ready to gather here. One of September’s pleasures is blackberry picking. It is the perfect reason for an extended slow walk along byways or canal paths. You can listen to the birds and hear the buzz of insects and enjoy the last of the wild flowers having sunshine on your back the while. Somehow you forget the nettle stings, the scratches and the sticky-willy stuck to you clothes! Blackberries or brambles are part of the same botanic group as raspberries and can be cross-bred to create hybrids such as tayberry or loganberry. They are more esteemed in Britain than in other countries and they marry really well with our apples and can be made into jams, jellies and puddings. A few fruits added to a beef or venison stew enriches the dish. Here there is a long tradition of fruit with meat, for example pork and apple sauce or lamb with redcurrant jelly. Also good early autumn food! When you get your harvest home, if you do not need to use it right away the brambles can be frozen in a plastic box or double plastic bags. Used later in the winter they will remind you of the good time and purple-stained hands you had finding them. The simplest way to enjoy brambles without the pips is to make a fool.

Bramble fool 500 gm brambles, 2 tablespoons sugar, ½ pint whipping cream. In a heavy bottomed pan stew the fruit with some sugar very slowly with just enough water to stop the berries catching or burning. When they are soft and pulpy sieve them through a nylon sieve and mix them with an equal quantity of whipped cream. Pour into glasses and chill. Decorate with a whole berry on top. Lemon berry pudding 250g brambles layered on the bottom of a straight sided oven-proof dish (1pt. soufflé dish is perfect) 30gm butter 120g sugar 1 lemon: rind grated and juice squeezed 2 standard eggs, separated: mix the yolks with the milk ¼ pt milk 30g plain flour Whipped cream to serve if liked. Cream the butter with half of the sugar, add the lemon rind and juice and beat well. Add the milk/egg mixture little by little to the sugar/ butter mixture alternating with the flour. Mix in the rest of the sugar. Whip the egg whites till stiff but not dry; fold the eggs into the lemon mixture. Pour over the brambles in their dish. Bake for 40mins at mark5 or 180oC till top is browned and underneath there is a delicious sauce in the brambles. Serve hot, cooling or cold.

Blackberry and Apple jelly 1 kilo brambles 1 kilo apples cut up roughly (wind-falls or a mixture of cookers and eaters. It does not matter what they look like because you need them to set the jelly and bulk out the brambles.) 1pt water Juice of 1 lemon Sugar. The amount depends on the volume of juice you get from the brambles. Cook the fruit very gently with the water in a large pan or a jam pan if possible. Strain the fruit and all the liquid through a fine cloth or jelly bag. This can be done by tying a piece of clean old sheet onto the legs of an upturned chair or stool; or by putting the cloth over a basin, pouring in the fruit and then gathering the edges together, tying them with a longish piece of string and hanging the whole thing up to drip into the bowl. This is NOT as complicated as it sounds and the pip-free jelly is well worth the effort. Leave for 12 hours or till all the juice is collected. Do not be tempted to squeeze the bag because you will have a cloudy jelly. Measure the liquid and to each pint add 450gm sugar. Put the lemon juice in now. Bring slowly to the boil and then boil rapidly till a teaspoon of liquid sets on a cold plate or saucer. Have ready clean, warm jam-jars. Fill the pots and cover with lids or cellophane jam covers.

The most traditional of all - Bramble and Apple Pie. Just add brambles to your apples when you make a pie. 1 packet puff pastry or ready rolled pastry or If you make your own short crust pastry the yield from 360g flour and 180g butter 200g peeled and sliced cooking apples 200g brambles:- any proportion of the 2 fruits will be delicious Sugar to taste Line a metal flan or pie dish with pastry. Put all the fruit in the pie, sprinkle over the sugar. Wet the edge of the bottom layer of pastry. Cover the pie with the second round of pastry and press the edges together. The wet edge helps it stay together. Seal the pie edge in whatever pattern you prefer. Pushing it with a fork or cutting and folding the edge all look pretty. Make a hole on the top to let out the steam. Scatter a little sugar over the pie or brush with a little milk. This makes the resulting dish look even better in the end. Cook 200oC or gas 6 for 40 mins or till golden. Let the pie cool a little before cutting into it. Boiling fruit sugar is very hot. Serve with cream, custard or thick yoghurt. If there is any left over it is still good cold.

Turn your house into a home By Karen Murray
W
ith over twenty years’ experience in styling homes with blinds, curtains and accessories, familyrun business Style Rite Blinds will guide you through the process of turning your house into a home. Established by Paul Mitchell working alongside Audrey and Peter, the company offers not only a wide range of blinds and curtains to suit all homes - from a single roller blind to a full range of conservatory blinds - but a free measuring service too. The best way to see the range is of course to pop in to the showroom at Dedridge East Industrial Estate, when you can browse in comfort and pick out styles and colours. You will receive a friendly welcome with a professional approach and the personal touch. When it comes to blinds, you might think a blind is blind but there you’d be mistaken. There are wooden blinds, Venetian blinds, vertical, roman and roller blinds as well as conservatory blinds and all in a number of styles. Roller blinds these days come with a fitted pelmet and can be fixed to open up to the exact point at which you want them to open. Points to note are things such as the safety angle - to alleviate any worries over child safety, you can choose blinds that come with a uni wand control for extra piece of mind. If you don’t want holes in your walls, tiles or window frames, then Perfect Fit or Intu blinds are for you. There is no drilling required - they have a frame which integrates into your existing window or uses a discreet head rail and almost invisible side rails. They are perfect for tilt and turn windows and conservatory.
system from America with the frame and shutter all in one. Another American import are PVC vertical blinds which are very durable and easily wiped clean. However, it might be that you want the softer look of curtains and again, Style Rite has a style and colour to suit any environment. “We continually update the designs and make sure there are always the latest styles available,” smiles Paul. A visit to the showroom will give you a great starting point and all curtains are made to measure, with a visit to your home ensuring a perfect fit. Paul and the team are happy to make recommendations if you are unsure which way to go and the manufacturing work is carried out above the showroom. So when you are looking to restyle your home, pop in to Style Rite’s showroom and see the wide range they have to offer. You can contact Style Rite on
