Hello neighbours It’s gala season and a fantastic celebration of the start of summer. We are very fortunate to live in such lively communities where there are so many opportunities and activities for children and families. The huge effort on the part of those who organise these events doesn’t go unappreciated! With all the galas and fairs there is something for everyone - from bouncy castles to....Harburn Festival’s annual welly hurl! Besides the galas, several of the businesses advertising in this magazine offer a great range of activities for children, from art and craft to sporting activities, so let’s just reflect on how fortunate we are and make the most of all that is on offer around here for our families. In the run-down to the end of term, we interviewed a family for whom the end of term has no meaning as their children don’t go to school, so you can read about

them on pages 8 – 9, as well as all our usual columns and contributors. Congratulations to Mrs Rona Brown of Kirknewton who won the crossword prize last month. This month you could win lunch for two at Jupiter Artland’s delightful cafe. You don’t need to purchase a ticket for Jupiter Artland to visit the cafe, although I think once you’ve driven through their beautiful grounds to get to the cafe you’ll almost certainly decide that you have to see the rest! Thanks for reading the Konect Directory, we’ll be back in July!

School holidays - who needs ‘em? By Helen-Jane Shearer

W

hile most of us are either looking forward to or dreading the long school holidays with the children at home, for a number of families the school term calendar has no impact on their arrangements; their children are educated outwith the school system. I met up with one such family this month to learn a bit more about their lifestyle. The Davidsons live in Livingston. Parents Morag and Kevin run an IT business and the children are home-educated. They started off at a primary school in Edinburgh, which they were so pleased with that when they moved to Livingston they kept the children in the Edinburgh school and travelled each day. But with a change of head teacher, the school no longer met their needs so they took the children out of school while they looked for another in Livingston. During that time they noticed that the children were learning fast at home and were happy and fulfilled. They abandoned the search for a school; home education was working and they were all loving it. Their eldest daughter had by this time already had gained a scholarship to a secondary school in Edinburgh and was happy there, but the other children were still primary school age. Home education is the ultimate in individually tailored education as children don’t have to fit in with the way the rest of a class is working. They can find their own style and pace. Morag sees herself as a facilitator rather than a teacher. “I let them have a lot of freedom to follow their own interests,” says Morag. “We talk about things a lot, and we provide them with whatever they need to pursue their

Sam, Morag, Jenn

a

interests.” They rarely sit at a desk with worksheets; learning happens through involving the children in everyday activities as well as providing them with the books and materials they want to do their own projects. As we chatted Finlay, aged 2, trotted past counting fluently. And they are lucky in that all of the children are good readers, mainly self-taught. Cameron, aged 8, is an avid reader, having read all the Harry Potter books when he was 6. Bekah, aged 5, is just learning to read and loves ballet too. But reaching benchmarks and comparing her children to others is just not something that Morag and Kevin do, or find the least bit useful. They know that each of their children are learning to the best of their ability and that is what matters. Sam (12), having spent most of her primary school years at home, got a bursary for Mary Erskine last year despite scepticism from some that she would not have a chance, as competition is fierce for the small number of places. She won a place and decided to give secondary school a go. I ask her how she has found her first year at school. “We haven’t done anything yet that I hadn’t already done at home” she says. “I finish my lessons early and the teachers give me extra puzzles and things to do”. So why is she there? “Well, we decided we’d give it a fair go and see how it goes.” Sam is interested in the performing arts and this year for the second year running she has a role in the Macrobert panto in Stirling, Jackie and the Beanstalk (see www.macrobert.org/panto.htm). This involves two months full time off school from November to January, as well as a significant commitment throughout the late summer and autumn. My impression is that a couple of months off school is unlikely to be a problem for Sam! Sam’s older sister Jenna (14) is also keen on the performing arts, and successfully auditioned for a place on the SQA Higher in dance at Howden Park Centre, which she starts studying for this month. In addition she is working towards Royal Academy of Dance vocational qualifications via the Central Scotland Ballet

m, Cameron, Sa

a, Bekah

Finlay, Jenn

School. She hopes to go to the The Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama in Glasgow, so has a clear idea of what she wants to do and how to get there. In her spare time she loves knitting and has set up a small business called Jenna’s Knits, selling her knitwear to family, friends and online. Morag feels that learning how to learn is a key skill that home education is giving her children, and it is that ability to carve out their own paths and pick up new skills that is so valuable in later life. A typical day for the Davidsons might include a visit to the library, and the older children might help the younger ones with a science experiment or some baking. There is a busy home education community across Edinburgh and the central belt, and the Davidsons join in organised excursions as and when things come up which interest them. Most days there are clubs and activities to attend - for the older girls their dance classes, for the others Tae Kwon Do, judo, swimming. There is only one day of the week when they don’t have any clubs on, and they have a busy social life. Morag leaves the older girls to arrange their cinema trips and so on with their friends, who come from a wide geographical area thanks to the fact that they attend clubs not only in Livingston but also in Falkirk, South Queensferry and Edinburgh. How does home-educating fit in with both parents working? “We both work from home, so we share in looking after the children and visiting customers.” Morag can usually manage all the desk time she needs for administration work during the day while the children are occupied with their own things. Report writing and project planning all happens in the evening after the younger children are in bed. Does Morag ever feel she needs a bit of “me

time”? “For me I don’t feel it’s that important. There are plenty of times when the children are away, at activities, at friends’ houses or with their god-mother.” So as we’re tearing our hair out wondering what to do with the children this summer, coping with the refrain of “I’m bored, what can I do?” let’s reflect that when children’s lives are not divided up for them by adults into “school” and “holiday” they can be learning, enjoying life at their own pace and developing without having either their education or their entertainment handed to them on a plate.

Geocaching locally

G

eocaching is an enjoyable social hobby, a gentle treasure hunt played around our countryside and villages with people you’ll probably never meet. All you need is the modern equivalent to a compass, the GPS, which is often part of a mobile phone. Then you go to websites such as geocaching.com to find GPS locations and clues to help you find the “treasures”, or geocaches. Many of our local landmarks have geocaches nearby, as do obscure and unremarkable corners. A cache consists of a sealed container or bag with a paper log book and some objects. The rules are simple: if you remove an object, replace it with something of equal or greater value, and write about your find in the log book and later, on the website. Objects can be anything so long as it is small, from a little plastic toy to an interesting shaped nut to a copper coin from Russia! Once you’ve got into the swing of geocaching you might like to create one yourself but beware of muggles, the idea is to do geocaching discreetly without nongeocachers even being aware of the game going on

around them! Geocaching is a great way to learn about the local area and get out and about with the family. The fun is in finding the cache, and there are varying levels of difficulty. For example, searching for ‘Mid Calder’ on geocaching.com brings up the cache called “Under Bridge”. Somewhere near GPS coordinates N 55° 53.558 W 003° 28.659 is a cache described as ‘a camouflage bag’. The clue is “These GPS coordinates take you to a lovely bed of nettles”, so once under the bridge you need to spot the nettles and then use common-sense to guess what would be an accessible and effective hiding place. And similarly for the “Welcome To” sign one mile from Pumpherston, or in the abandoned Oakbank Village. A much greater challenge is around the Kirkhill Pillar Project (a local art project covered by Konect in the March 2010 issue). Clues at the Sun and each of the planets in the model of the solar system will give you the coordinates of a cache representing Halley’s Comet, which was not in the model built by the Earl of Buchan in 1776.

If you would like to pla a geocache in one of ce West Lothian’s country parks contact the Ranger Ser , please stating where you wo vice to place the cache an uld like d the coordinates. The Rang check out the area to ers will it is safe and not goingmake sure the wildlife. There are to disturb the parks that are no areas in for caches such as ba t suitable dens, wild meadows,dger/fox rare plants, sites of special scientifi and local nature reservc interest es.

T

he Konect Directory is run and written by local people whose daily lives are rooted in our villages. Introducing three of our regular contributors...

Karen Murray writes our regular local walk column as well as sometimes the feature article or interviews with local business people. “I have been a journalist/ editor for far more years than I care to remember beginning with the University newspaper and moving through just about every other form of communication. Now I juggle running a pottery painting studio, writing for Konect and looking after three children which leaves no time for housework, which is just the way I like it!”

Maureen McIntyre contributes the popular Family History column each month. “I live in East Calder with my family and have researched my roots back to my 7 x great grandfather who lived in Uphall around 1695. Much of my spare time is taken up with my genealogy studies and research and I recently gained a Masters in Advanced Professional Studies. I also enjoy gardening, crafts and photography.” Jackie Whigham writes our uplifting and thoughtprovoking Thought for the Month column. “I run Lumiere health and beauty salon based at Xcite in East Calder where I am happy to help my clients cultivate their inner and outer beauty.”

Thought for the Month By Jackie Whigham

Personal Power Through Awareness You were born with an incredible gift - an authority more influential than you know. This inner power allows you to create and sustain your life as you please. You are able to reach great heights in all areas of your life, if you are willing to focus your energy on what you wish to create.

You will know when your Power is fading. You will feel weak. When you’re weak you feel you need to prove your point. You feel you need to be right. You feel you need to be heard and noticed. You need a pat on the back. The above are some of the tell tale signs you are giving away your Power.

Unfortunately most people focus upon problems and dramas. Instead of responding to life, they go through their day re-acting to everyone and everything.

Stop trying to convince the world of your Greatness and instead become silent. Go within – it’s now time for you to realise your Greatness. When you believe in yourself you’ll stop going into combat with others! When you surrender you’ll win – and it is here, my friend, you will know freedom within. Have a great day!

Realise every time you re-act, you are fighting against something or someone. It’s through this constant re-action to the outside world you lose Personal Power, thus leaving you vulnerable and exposed to judgement.

If there is anything you’d like to ask me about or write about you can reach me at jackiewhigham1@aol.com. Have a happy day!

Kirknewton Gala Day Saturday 18th June

M

ake sure you put this date in your diary for the Kirknewton Gala Day. Each year the day gets bigger and better and there will be plenty of entertainment for all ages once more.

The wonderful homemade burgers will be back on the BBQ by popular demand and the local WRI will put on a wonderful tea tent. Ice-cream and sweeties will also be available.

Gala events kick off with a football tournament on Friday 17th June, so dig those football boots out and practice goal shots. The children’s and inter-school races will be held first thing on Saturday.

Raffle tickets will be on sale with a top prize of £200 and other delights including a family trip on the canal courtesy of the Linlithgow Union Canal Society.

The main Gala will run from 12 noon to 4pm with entertainment galore for the whole family. There will be a magician, balloon man, the animal man with his furry friends, a local pipe band and plenty of dancing. As well as all that, you will find bouncy castles, an obstacle course and a climbing wall. There will be face-painting, a balloon stall, a tombola and kids’ pocket money stall. The Tug-of-War will take place at 3pm so make sure you enter a team.

22

However in order for this great day to roll out as planned the committee needs all the help it can get. Many hands make light work as they say, so if you can volunteer in any way - to help set up, run the stalls, dismantle - your help would be gratefully received. Please leave your name and number with Debbie in the Post Office as well as any donations to the tombola or raffle if you have them. With everything in place, it’s up to weather to be kind for a fabulous Gala Day.

Jupiter Artland

Children’s summer art programmes

D

ue to popular demand Jupiter Artland’s education programme is growing. We have been running our visits and workshops for schools and colleges for the last two years and they have been so successful that we are now booked up a term in advance. To complement this we are building on our Artsparks courses and offering holiday workshops for children of all ages, as well as a twelve-week preschool “Little Sparks” course from August.

is to stimulate and inspire the children by looking at the sculptures, and to teach skills through fun activities based on the artwork and the artist’s practice. This winter the staff at Jupiter have been hard at work creating a woodland classroom. It is nestled on the edge of the woods and has its own outdoor area -perfect for outdoor workshops and exhibition space for the children’s creations. With plenty of indoor space for workshops and lots of facilities and resources at our disposal, children will be able to work on large scale projects they simply can’t do at school where space is a limitation. The courses on offer this summer give a range of interpretations of the artwork and a behind the scenes insight into the collection. Artsparks Tuesday 26th to Thursday 28th July

Jupiter Artland is a unique place; the stunning woodland and open fields are home to sculpture by some of the world’s most talented contemporary sculptors. It is a place where children are instantly comfortable and they absorb the atmosphere learning almost without noticing. The combination of art and animals – miniature donkeys, chickens, sheep and even the odd alpaca is a reassuring mix for children. One minute you are looking at an overwhelming 12 metre metal orchid and a short stroll away sheep graze in the meadow blissfully unaware that they live alongside such iconic works. Children begin to observe things differently as they learn about the artists and see the way art and nature interact. The aim of all courses at Jupiter 24

An exciting 3 day course investigating the collection with lots of fun outdoor and indoor activities. This course is being run by Davina Richardson, a hugely talented and experienced teacher who has worked with us at Jupiter often before. With a special focus on the Marc Quinn orchid, the children will create large scale collages as well as a variety of work on paper and sculpture. The course runs from 10am to 4pm. For 5 to14 year olds. Drop in holiday workshops On the 5th, 12th and 19th of August we will be offering three drop in workshop days that children can join from either 10.30am to 12.30pm or 1pm to 3pm. The sessions will allow children to have their own unique look at the collection while their parents have theirs too! For 5 to 15 year olds.

5th August: Mud glorious mud! 12th August: Landforms! 19th August: Goldsworthy out and about! Artsparks Monday 22nd & Tuesday 23rd August A 2 day course at Jupiter run by Diana McMicking the education director. This course is inspired by the Charles Jencks landforms. We will be creating our own outdoor landforms in the new education garden – so watch out, your own gardens may never be the same! The course runs from 10am to 4pm. For 5 to14 year olds. Little Sparks We are very excited to announce the launch of an Artsparks preschool group, “Little Sparks”. It will be led by a new recruit to Jupiter, Izzy Chapell, who is a very inspiring and experienced nursery teacher with a special interest in the performing arts. “Little Sparks” will run every Tuesday morning from 9.30 to 12 in our new woodland classroom from the 30th August to the 22nd November. The sessions will include an outdoor activity to initiate an art workshop based on the collection and around natural themes. Every session the children will produce a piece of artwork to take home. Children will also have related singing, drama and imaginative play activities built into the mornings. To find out more about Artsparks at Jupiter please visit our website at www.jupiterartland.org You can book in online for our courses and all the information you need will be there

Researching your Catholic ancestors has never been easier Family history column by Maureen McIntyre

T

he Scottish Catholic Archives hold a wealth of interesting information, and depending on where your ancestors lived they will help to fill in many blanks in your family tree. Before 1855 researchers rely on the Church of Scotland Old Parish Records but the Catholic Archives have recently been made available to search at Scotland’s People. These Archives include Baptism, Marriage, Death, Seat Rents and Confirmations, but those who wish to dig a bit deeper into the social history of Catholics living in Scotland will benefit hugely from visiting the Archives at Columba House in Edinburgh. The Archives contain many ‘gems’ which do not fit into any of the normal category of archives. These ‘gems’ range from lists of parish priests and school teachers to the detailed income and expenditure summary for the building of a school purchased by the St Stephen’s congregation in Blairgowrie in 1885. The record shows that The Marquis of Bute donated £20 and ‘Handy Andy’ contributed £1 15sh and 11d!

Was your ancestor a mason in Blairgowrie? Did he help with the building of the new local school?

30

There are some detailed drawings in the archives of St Peters in Dalbeattie

There are also some interesting records from West Lothian for “The St Columba’s Branch of League of the Cross”. The records list the name and address of each League member, the total amount of alcohol that the member drank (how much whiskey, wine and beer or port), and how long they pledged to give up drinking alcohol.

These archives help to put the ‘meat on the bones’ of our research, once we have a basic tree full of names and ages and events it is then possible to add social and work information helping us to build up a complete picture of our ancestors. Genealogy is fast becoming one of the most popular hobbies in the country with people becoming addicted to finding out all they can about their ancestors. I have just finished 3 years of study at the University of Strathclyde in Genealogy, so if you are just starting your tree or if you are having problems with any of your branches please email me and I will endeavour to help. Please email me: rootsandbranches@hotmail.co.uk All images reproduced with the kind permission of the Catholic Archives, Edinburgh.

A waterside walk By Karen Murray

W

hen is a walk more than a walk? When you can take someone along and chat as you walk - a walk and a talk is often better than just a walk. I managed to persuade eldest child to accompany me on an evening walk as we hadn’t had a chance to catch up all week and despite her initial reluctance I think she enjoyed it as much as I did. I didn’t want to go too far so we decided to head to East Calder and start our walk there. We went down Oakbank Roand and parked near the Oakbank Bowling Club. Admiring the views over fields and woodland toward the Ochil Hills, we soon headed into the woodland taking the forest path marked “Mid Calder Bank Street 0.8 miles”. This starts just where Oakbank Road narrows and there is a gap in the wall. Immediately the aroma of wild garlic wafted up to us and I realised we were surrounded in it. With the low evening sun sneaking through the trees, we were sheltered from the wind and we took time to enjoy not only the garlic but the wood anenome and the banks and banks of pink coloured flowers that I think are red campion but don’t quote me on that. I kept waxing lyrical about the flora and discovered to my delight that my daughter was quite enjoying their beauty too. The bluebells were in the dying hours and still gorgeous and I kept finding clumps of my favourite - the wild violet. There were even wild strawberries. Flowers aside, the walk continued through the woods meandering this way and that, eventually heading down some wooden steps until we could hear the babble of the Linhouse Water to the left. Mind the steep drop to the water!

32

The path gradually descended until it ran parallel although still slightly above the river. A fallen tree was blocking the path but it wasn’t too hard to negotiate and we soon reached a point where you could get right down to the water’s edge. I was all for continuing on the path but was persuaded to go down. Great idea as it was a veritable Garden of Eden down there, the water going up and over a mini weir to pool underneath some craggy rocks where a waterfall spilled down to join the pool. It seemed miles away from anywhere. A tranquil rest and we were off again. Having descended to the water, the path rapidly ascended, so rapidly that I was reminded of how unfit I am and was of course totally shown up by my sporty offspring who bounded up the steps not even out of breath at the top, as I laboured somewhat and had to rest half way up. The path opened out onto scrubby grassland and were offered a choice. Left along a narrow gravel path which would ultimately take us to Bank Street, Mid Calder or right which would lead eventually back to East Calder Main Street. Both routes of course allow you to make your way on roadside pavements back to the start of the walk. We chose however to retrace our steps as we had enjoyed the woodland waterside walk so much and the sunlight was still on our side. The 1.6 miles route there and back took around an hour but that included several stops to admire the scenery. The circular route would probably take a little longer.

South Lodge Cattery home from home

C

rocheted blankets, a comfy armchair or a sunny shelf - these are just some of the things cats visiting South Lodge Cattery in East Calder can expect. Owner Margaret Albani aims to create a home from home as far as possible for all her feline guests, and with a range of different pens available they can all make themselves comfortable. The business started in 1996 and has been developing and adding new services ever since. Besides boarding and homesitting for cats and other small pets, extra services offered include collection/delivery and a webcam so that you can check on your pet while you are away. They are also happy to administer medication or injections if necessary at no extra cost – besides having owned diabetic cats themselves, they have completed a course with Riverside Vets so are qualified to administer medication. Their latest new service launched this month is mobile micro-chipping.. They are registered and approved by Identichip, the national pet reunification service, to carry out micro-chipping. This can be done on-site at South Lodge Cattery or, uniquely, they provide a mobile service and will come to you. Simply call to arrange a time, and this quick and painless procedure can be carried out in your own home with minimum disruption for your pet. Whilst we love our cats, it can be distressing when they kill garden birds and responsible cat owners are sensitive to the distress this can cause their neighbours too. It is very difficult to tell how many birds are killed by cats but figures from the RSPB suggest around 55 million birds plus 200 million small mammals are killed every year. Bell collars can help a little but are not totally effective as birds don’t necessarily associate the bell sound with danger.

A microchip is a small imp grain of rice) that is ins lant (the size of a erted into the skin between the shoulder blades of your dog, cat rabbit. good for helping your cat through stressful situations such as vet visits, but it also calms their hunt and kill instinct and you may find fewer dead birds and mice being brought to your door. Pet calming collars are available for sale from South Lodge Cattery. Your cat won’t need to wear a pet calming collar during her stay at South Lodge Cattery- as I strolled around the cattery on a sunny day to take photos for this article, all the residents were looking supremely relaxed and happy in their spacious and well-fitted out pens. South Lodge Cattery, Oakbank Road, East Calder, EH53 0JP Tel 01506 880767 www.southlodgecats.com

As most hunting happens at night, keeping your cat indoors overnight can reduce the number of small animals she catches. South Lodge Cattery also recommends using pet calming collars. These collars release a chemical which mimics that produced by a mother cat for her kittens, and gives a feeling of calm and well-being. This is

Children’s eduCation Courses and aCtivities Due to popular demand Jupiter Artland is expanding its holiday and preschool courses to complement the education programme we run during term time. We have created a superb woodland classroom with an outdoor area under the trees which will act as a fantastic base for all our activities. 26th to 28th July an exciting 3 day Artsparks course investigating the collection with lots of fun outdoor and indoor activities. With a special focus on the Marc Quinn orchid the children will create large scale collages as well as a variety of work on paper and sculpture. 5th, 12th and 19th August drop in workshops for 5 to 15 year olds during Jupiter’s opening hours. These themed workshops are based on mud printing and sculpting, Jencks’ landforms and Andy Goldsworthy’s work at Jupiter. 22nd and 23rd August a 2 day course inspired by Charles Jencks building our own earthworks and landforms which will transform your garden forever! We are very excited to announce the launch of Little Sparks an Artsparks preschool group. It will be led by a new recruit to Jupiter, Izzie Chappell, who is a very inspiring and experienced nursery teacher with a special interest in the performing arts. Little Sparks will run every Tuesday morning from 9.30 to 12 in our new woodland classroom from 30th August to 22nd November. The sessions will include an outdoor activity to initiate an art project based on the collection and around natural themes. Children will also have related singing, drama and imaginative play activities built into the mornings. For more information and to book any of these activities visit
