FIVE MINUTES CITY

PROJECT: Broadway Junction Traffic Hub Design PERIOD: 01/2018-05/2018 LOCATION: New York City, the United States INSTRUCTOR: Mona El Khafif GROUP WORK: Jing Huang, Mengzhe Ye, Sihan Lai The polycentric system generates the 5 minutes zone for linking the hotel and subway system. There are three different identity buildings representing different functions. Shopping corridors link the HRA and the subway platform which the 5 minutes connection to the surrounding area. The HRA office by using the small cluster to create some creative office area. The housing project also links the Alabama avenue subway to create the better housing for the community.

5

By creating the centric mega structure organization along the site, the whole subway system can be regenerated by the subway and commercial program. The ramps and corridor generate the 5 mins zones. At the same time, the food market creates an open area for gathering local farmers and provide more community activities.

ILLUMINATION BRIDGE

PROJECT: Search & Rescue Center Design in Barrow PERIOD: 8/2017-12/2017 LOCATION: Barrow, Alaska, the United States INSTRUCTOR: Matthew Jull GROUP WORK: Jing Huang, Mengzhe Ye, Sihan Lai During the observation phase of this studio, we found the disconnection between individuals and their environment that we observe urge us to seek the seamless connection between them. This project proposes a series of lighting conditions that promotes psychological cognitive and physical well-being thus connect the individuals and the environment seamlessly.

Site Condition

After the study and the research of the site. The environmental condition in Barrow, Alaska will be the most significant impact on the design. The ground condition is exceptional with the perma-frost. Which means that the heat of the house will cause the foundation crust. The cold weather and the extreme cold weather also caused so many people lost and dangerous. The Barrow government is planning to build a new rescue center for the public rescue. They need 2 more helicopter aircraft and one more office building for staffs. We are attempting to design the new rescure center near to the Barrow airport and next to the old rescue center. And the new rescue center will have the emergency hospital and rest area and a training area for staff. This center will be used the public as a public safety learning center.

LIGHT CONDITION:

DARK CONDITION:

The modular phase of this proposal is to test out the various properties of light in the arctic and to construct a guideline of design prototypes in order to create a mentally and physically healthy environment for people in the arctic to work efficiently in the summer and celebrate their harvest and heritage in the winter.

17

MATERIAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITION LIGHT TEST

This test was just trying to use different materials to test the light condition inside. We used 4 different materials inside and 4 different materials outside to test the strength and the blury of the light inside. The grid will give the most soft light in the side of the wall. The fabric will also have a faint shadow. The white and black foam core will have a strong light and shadow edge.

18

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITION AND OPENING DESIGN LIGHT TEST

Using light as a guideline, the deployment phase of this proposal is to provide a base for the north slope borough(NSB) search and rescue department(SAR), helping them operate effectively under any season and weather conditions. By applying the modular design of various bottom openings, snow/ice accumulation and re-arrangement of building materials, this deployment is to build an effective collection of structures that carry the aircraft traffic and maintenance, home for staff and volunteers, spaces for rescues, a friendly learning environment for the trainees and a welcoming hub for the local residents and the visitors.

Because of the perma-frost ground condition, we have to elevate the building. But it also gives us a chance to get the light from bottom of the building. The opening at the ground level can get the reflection of the snow and ice in winter. The structure of the roof is truss and the loop of the roof can reduce the snow accumulated in winter.

PLAYING WITH WALLS

PROJECT: Yamuna River Project// Government School & Education center Pavilion PERIOD: 8/2018-12/2018 LOCATION: New Delhi, India INSTRUCTOR: Gonzalez Aranguren, Maria INDIVIDUAL WORK This research program is in new Delhi, India. We are trying to change the relationship between the citizen and public space. The main idea is inviting the citizens to public space and the river bank. We are trying to create the play space for young children and also for adults. The space is just trying to give them the space to play, to enjoy. We tried to create alternate walls for different times and different service. The reverse wall and the blocks give people's chance to play and to create their own space. The education problem is still a big problem for Indian society. We designed a government primary school for children who's moving in this area and also a public library and open space for the adults. The culture pavilions system and the school will near the riverbank and invite people to the riverbank.

VIEWING DECK IN PAINTING

PROJECT: Painting and Architecture, Viewing Deck Design PERIOD: 09/2015-10/2015 LOCATION: Yangtze River Bank, Wuhan, China COMPETITION WORK GROUP WORK: Jing Huang, Jiayue Qin This project was trying to figure out the connection and relationship between drawings and architecture. This project is near to the Yangtze river bank and we are trying to test the best view position on the tour train movement and human movement. And then, we referred back to test the connection between the window design and human movement. All those view cut from the tour train at different window was edited to a video to show the movement of the architecture experience. The window design and the tour train became two different layers to create the experience. We got the flow idea from the satirical drawing and then transform it into dynamical architecture.

37

38

DESIGN ABSTRACT STEP 1 Simulating the way of visitors' action inside the tour train. Normal, visitors will be equally distributed inside the tour train.

STEP 2 With the movement of the train and the view changing. Visitors will have actions in the train and the window setting will be the element to determine the view of people. Also, the different movement of the train and the different routes from different visitors will form special view experience as a video to every individual

STEP 3 Related to the railway and the settled view position, Yje movement of the tour train, the best view position will be shown in a specific time and specific position of the train. Those best view position were supposed to be the first test window positions. With those best view positions and the first test window position. To get the people's circulation inside.

STEP 4 Simulating a number of visitors routes in the train to enjoy the view with the first test window position. Collecting those data and searching for the most intersection points and maximal them as the best view points. With the second window positions with those data. Using video to record and verify the view.

INTERACTIVE HAZE BUILDING

PROJECT: Haze Purification Mechanized Building PERIOD: 11/2015-12/2015 LOCATION: New Delhi, India INSTRUCTOR: Xinran Ma INDIIVIDUAL WORK This project is attempting to solve the significant air pollution problem in New Delhi, India. I am trying to create an interactive building system which can filter the polluted air by the building design. I am trying to break the boundary of the building's window and wall to solve the air pollution. The interactive filter will insert in all those building elements just like beam and roof and column. I go to get the idea from the air purifier. All those different layers will purified the air one by one. And I separated those layers in a different area of the building system. The greens and plants on the grids are the primary layer of the building to purify the air. And the roof and the window will have those purify material inside and will become the second layer. And plants inside will be the third layer to clean the air.

This building has no site, which means people can create it for different program and in a different area of New Delhi. I chose three areas to test this design. One is a reading pavilion for homeless children. The second one is an office area near to the traffic hub. The third one is a bus station near to the center of the city. This building will have a light construction and all those walls and windows and columns will be easily built and separated by those grid system. All those grid system also built a new transparent space for children to play and for plants to grow. Those plants and grids are outside of the building. But also

DESIGN DEVELOPMENT

PROJECT: Office Design Development PERIOD: 8/2017-12/2017 LOCATION: Baltimore, Maryland, the United States INSTRUCTOR: Michael Petrus INDIVIDUAL WORK This project is attempting to learn the design development skills in architecture building process. I choosed concrete and steel as two main materials and glass was used as the glaze wall. The slab and the main structure is reinforced concrete and the opening on the roof is glaze roof. Main roof area is mixed plants roof with water retarder.
