IN THE HEART OF DOWNTOWN LAWRENCE LIES AN ABANDONED BUILDING NEAR THE CORNER OF 9TH STREET AND MASSACHUSETTS. THIS BUILDING, SITED FOR REDEVELOPMENT BY THE DEPARTMENT OF URBAN PLANNING, HAS BEEN TURNED IN TO A MODERN MIXED USE BUILDING WITH A COFFEE SHOP ON THE FIRST FLOOR AND SEVERAL SMALL APARTMENTS ABOVE. AS THE PEDESTRIAN PASSES BY OUR SITE, THEY WILL SEE A MODERN AND FRESH FAÇADE THAT BREAKS ALL THE PRECONCEIVED NOTIONS OF WHAT A BUILDING IN A HISTORIC DISTRICT SHOULD LOOK LIKE. WHERE MOST BUILDINGS ARE TWO OR THREE STORIES, OURS MIRRORS THE BANK BUILDING A COUPLE BLOCKS DOWN AT SIX; WHERE OTHER BUILDINGS CLING TO AN ESTABLISHED STREET WALL, OURS DELIBERATELY CREATES A VERY ENGAGING AND ENERGETIC THREE DIMENSIONAL SHAPE—A CONCEPT WE NAMED “PUSH AND PULL”. LASTLY, INSTEAD OF THE USUAL OPAQUE BRICK, WE HAVE AN ABUNDANCE OF TRANSPARENCY ACCENTED WITH WHITE STEEL—IN THE FORM OF OPERABLE GLASS DOORS, FROSTED GLASS WINDOWS, GRIDDED CURTAIN WALLS, AND PERFORATED STEEL SCREENS.
