Now in its 46th year, the Hong Kong Arts Festival continues to contribute to the cultural life of Hong Kong, delighting audiences from near and far. This year, the Festival puts on a wide variety of performances that showcase a mix of classic and contemporary genres, spotlighting Hong Kong’s rich and diverse cultural landscape. Featuring some 130 performances in a packed month of music, dance, theatre, opera and more, the Festival has much to offer to arts lovers of all kinds. Alongside dazzling performances by an array of local and international artists, the Festival continues to place great emphasis on its outreach activities. To develop youngsters’ appreciation of the arts, the Young Friends of the Hong Kong Arts Festival offers local students the opportunity to enjoy the Festival’s performances and participate in multi-arts activities. Similarly, the PLUS programme gives audiences an inspirational glimpse into the creative process behind the core Festival performances through a combination of workshops, backstage tours and masterclasses. HKAF, launched in 1973, is a major international arts festival committed to enriching the cultural life of the city by presenting leading local and international artists in all genres of the performing arts as well as a diverse range of “PLUS” and educational events in February and March each year.

HKAF is a non-profit organisation. Secured government baseline funding for the Festival in 2018 represents roughly 14% of its HK$125 million budget. Around 32% of the Festival’s income needs to come from the box office, and another 36% from sponsorship and donations made by corporations, individuals, and charitable foundations. It is anticipated that the remaining 18% will come from other revenue sources including the Government’s matching scheme, which matches income generated through private sector sponsorship and donations. • Outdoor events: Power Plant, Super Pool, Chorus HKAF actively collaborates with Hong Kong’s own creative talent and showcases emerging local artists. Over the years, HKAF has commissioned and produced over 200 local productions across genres including theatre, chamber opera, music and contemporary dance, many with successful subsequent runs in Hong Kong and overseas. Recent HKAF productions include A Floating Family, Hong Kong Odyssey, Chinese Lesson, Danz Up, Datong – The Chinese Utopia, The Amahs, Blast, Wild Boar and Murder in San Jose, to name a few. HKAF frequently partners with renowned international artists and institutions to produce exceptional works, such as Der Fensterputzer (The Window Washer) co-produced by HKAF, Goethe-Institut Hong Kong and Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch, Richard III and The Tempest produced by The Old Vic, BAM and Neal Street under “The Bridge Project” with HKAF as a co-commissioning institution, Green Snake cocommissioned with Shanghai International Arts Festival, and Dream of the Red Chamber co-produced with San Francisco Opera. HKAF invests heavily in arts education for young people. Over the past 26 years, our “Young Friends” scheme has reached over 730,000 local secondary and tertiary school students. A variety of arts education projects serving primary, secondary, and tertiary school students have been launched in recent years, featuring activities such as student showcases, pre-performance talks, open rehearsals, opportunities to attend Festival performances, as well as in-school workshops and lecture demonstrations led by international and local artists. Donations to the “Student Ticket Scheme” also make available approximately 10,000 half-price student tickets each year. HKAF organises a diverse range of “Festival PLUS” activities in community locations each year to enhance engagement between artists and audiences. These include films, lecture demonstrations, masterclasses, workshops, symposia, backstage visits, exhibitions, meet-the-artist sessions, and guided cultural tours.

索馬里難民少年阿薩有悲慘的過去、靈光的生意
Asad is a young Somalian refugee with a painful past, a brilliant head for business and miraculously good luck. After years in a refugee camp, then learning to hustle on the streets of Ethiopia, he sets off for the promised land of South Africa. But dreams and reality are very different. Once he has arrived in the townships, his adventures really begin.

Jonny Steinberg’s 2015 book, A Man of Good Hope, was described as “superb” by Observer reviewer Ian Birrell, who wrote: “On the surface, it is simply the biography of a lonely young migrant who dreams of a decent life, hardening his shell and hustling to survive in hostile human environments. Yet it is really an epic African saga that chronicles some fundamental modern issues such as crime, human trafficking, migration, poverty and xenophobia, while giving glimpses into the Somali clan system, repression in Ethiopia and lethal racism in townships.”

Steinberg was born and raised in South Africa. He was educated at Wits University in Johannesburg, and at the University of Oxford, where he was a Rhodes Scholar and earned a doctorate in political theory. He has worked as a journalist at a national daily, written scripts for television drama, and has been a consultant to the South African government on criminal justice policy. He is currently a lecturer in African Studies at the University of Oxford. The story is an extraordinary odyssey of a child who becomes a young man and his journey through Africa, ending in the USA as a refugee. However, it is much more than one man’s story; it deals with many issues of Africa and violence and of course the world’s greatest present crisis – the refugee situation. Although the production will be South African in its specifics and played by people from the very townships where violence against refugees was at its most horrific, the story is universal in its exploration of the “other” and our sense of place and identity. In Isango’s signature style, music will play a vital role in the narrative, leading us on a journey through African musical identity; indeed it is both music and especially singing that will provide both emotional and intellectual comment on the action. The piece is probably Isango’s most exciting and vital production to date. It is a searing exploration of the nature of humanity and has become one of Isango’s most important productions internationally.

Author’s note I had little idea that I would write a book about Asad Abdullahi when I met him. I had in mind a very different project, one that would take in many times, people and places. I imagined that Asad would occupy 10, perhaps 20 pages of the work. It was at our second meeting, I think, that the book I actually wrote was conceived. Asad and I were walking through the Company’s Garden, one of Cape Town’s oldest and loveliest public spaces, when Asad picked up a twig, snapped it open and smelt it. I will never forget the expression that came over him – the surprise, the wistfulness, the knowledge that what he was experiencing would soon disappear. The fragrance had transported him more than two decades back in time. He was six or seven years old in a madrassa in Mogadishu, Somalia, copying out the Quran line by line. The smell of the twig had reminded him of the narcotic sap of the agreeg tree he had used to bind ink; he was reliving a forgotten high. I felt a whim rising. A man who can break a twig and take me with him to another world, I thought, is a man about whom I ought to write a book. Our collaboration was, if not a tawdry affair, certainly an awkward one. When I met him Asad was hustling for a living. He’d leave his shack on the outskirts of Cape Town in the early mornings, hang out in the Somali section of Mitchell’s Plain township and ask the traders and businessmen he met there if they needed a delivery to be made. A man living that sort of life hardly had the time a writer demanded. And so I bought his time. I capitalised the business he wanted to start: selling cigarettes, mobile phone airtime and frozen chickens from his shack. It cost me less than £400. In exchange, I acquired a subject sufficiently sedentary to interview for weeks and months at a time. I will not say that the book wrote itself. Nor would I be so presumptuous as to think that Asad had a
Jonny Steinberg hand in writing it. Nonetheless, something of his grace and his skill were transferred to me, making the writing of the book possible. But under what strange conditions this transference took place. I was a white man in a good car and Asad was convinced that my presence in his shantytown home would attract men with guns. He refused to meet in his shack where he would have no forewarning of an attack. Instead he insisted that we talk in my car; there he had a 360-degree view and could see trouble coming. And so that is where we sat, day in and day out, for nearly a year. Asad read the first 25 pages of the book before putting it down and declaring that he would read no more. The story was simply too sad, he said. I was disconcerted. By the time I had done writing I had retraced most of his steps through the Horn of Africa, had found long-lost relatives of his in various parts of the world, and had discovered something of the lost genealogy of his family. Between my forensic interest in his past and his refusal to read about it was a chasm that made me immensely uneasy. It took a long while for me to settle upon an explanation. Taking in his past as a narrative unspooling through time was simply unhelpful to him, I believe. More than that, it was destructive. To have this perennially rejected boy, forever kicked around like a stone, installed in his imagination, was to rob himself of the wherewithal to live in the present. Better to see his past in flashes, to keep in his mind particular moments: moments of mystical feeling, of love, of the desire for revenge, moments when he was the one who decided what would happen next. Deep in our culture is the belief that unearthing memory is therapeutic. I think that Asad has taught me otherwise. He gave me the material to assemble a story about his personal history. But the story is not for him; it is for the edification of others.

Marimbas The first instruments you'll notice onstage are marimbas. Not to be confused with xylophones, marimbas feature wooden bars mounted above resonators. Nowadays the resonators are made of wood or aluminium, but traditionally they were made from hollowed gourds. Traditional marimbas are tuned to only play notes from a specific melodic scale, but our marimbas are chromatic – like keys on a piano. Just as our singers have different vocal ranges, the marimbas they normally use come in four sizes corresponding to their pitches. Highest to lowest, they are Soprano, Alto, Tenor and Bass. Unusually in A Man of Good Hope we only use altos, tenors and basses – Two altos, three tenors and two basses, arranged in diminishing order onstage with the bass farthest upstage (towards the back) and the alto farthest downstage (towards the front). 鼓 不是一般搖滾樂隊的小鼓、中音鼓、大鼓、或是管弦樂 團的定音鼓，通通都不是─不！它們是非洲鼓。鼓身 用木頭雕出、鼓面用獸皮（通常是山羊皮）包蓋製成。 非洲鼓簡單來說就是大聲，台上可能只看得見幾個，但 你一定聽得見。鼓腔裏面有大量空間產生共鳴；鼓身周 圍的繩結，能夠將獸皮鼓面拉緊和調至特定音高。
Drums Not the snare, tom-tom or bass drums of your typical rock band or even the timpani of an orchestra – no! These are djembe drums. Carved from wood and covered with rawhide (often goatskin), djembe drums are quite simply loud – you won't see many of them around the stage, but you'll definitely hear them. While it's the large interior cavity that resonates, the rawhide drumhead is tightened and tuned to a specific note using a series of ropes knotted all the way around.

Feet and Hands The oldest percussion instruments of all, and ones that we use a great deal, are our hands and feet. Many times during the performance clapping rhythms underpin the melodic tune. During the show's dance sequences, the stomping of the ensemble joins the djembes in drumming and punctuating the rhythms of the music onto the wooden stage. Our stage is always inclined and elevated, leaving space underneath for their stomps to resonate. The sound adds a rich musical quality to the dancing.

Others We use empty plastic drinks bottles (to represent the breaking down of Asad’s mother’s door for example), and drums made out of dustbins. Strangely enough we have to bring these dustbin drums with us wherever we tour. South African dustbins have a mix of rubber and plastic which seems to be unique. Once in London’s West End we decided to save on costs and not to ship them over. It was disastrous – we broke UK dustbins to pieces every single night! Coins, chains and tin mugs are also all played during the show. Water is poured and “night” and “day” sounds are created by the company vocally.

In 2001 two of the Ensemble’s first stage productions, The Mysteries Yiimimangaliso and uCarmen toured from the Spier Festival in Cape Town to Wilton’s Music Hall in London, and from there to London’s West End and many of the world’s major arts festivals. Their next productions The Magic Flute – Impempe Yomlingo and A Christmas Carol – Ikrismas Kherol were co-produced with the Young Vic . The Magic Flute – Impempe Yomlingo won an Olivier Award for Best Musical Revival and the Globes de Cristal for Best Opera Production. It toured to the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris and the West End, where The Mysteries – Yiimimangaliso returned to in 2009. The Ensemble’s major productions in 2012 are La Bohème – Abanxaxhi (in partnership with the Global Fund to Fight Aids Tuberculosis and Malaria, Hackney Empire, London) and a new stage version of Shakespeare’s Venus & Adonis (in partnership with Shakespeare’s Globe). Isango Ensemble has toured Ireland, the UK, France, Germany, Italy, Austria, Singapore, Turkey, Japan, Netherlands, Australia, and the US. Mandisi Dyantyis is Associate Director and Co-Music Director of Isango Ensemble and has been with the company since 2006. He has been Co-Music Director and arranger/ composer for all Isango Ensemble productions since 2006, including The Magic Flute – Impempe Yomlingo, A Christmas Carol – iKrismas Kherol, Venus and Adonis, The Mysteries – Yiimimangaliso, Aesop’s Fables and The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists – Izigwili Ezidlakazelayo. Dyantyis travelled to New York to work with Graduate Acting students at New York University’s Tisch School of Acting, as they explored relationships between South African and American theatre methods. In 2012, Dyantyis was the musical director and composer for Isango's Venus and Adonis which opened the Globe to Globe season at Shakespeare's Globe in London. The production re-ran in May 2013. He arranged and directed the music for the films Noye’s Fludde – Unogumbe and Breathe – Umphefumlo. In 2015 he adapted Bizet’s Carmen and Britten’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream for Isango’s USA Tour. In 2016 Dyantyis composed and conducted the music for A Man of Good Hope which ran at London’s Young Vic and New York’s BAM.

Pauline Malefane is co-founder and co-Music Director of Isango Ensemble. She has worked with members of the company since 2000. She is also an advocate for The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria. She saw world-wide success playing the role of Carmen, both on stage and in the Golden Bear-winning feature film U-Carmen eKhayelithsa, for which she won a Golden Thumb from Roger Ebert. She was awarded the Best Actress Award at the South African Film & Television Awards for the film Son of Man. She made her Proms debut at London's Royal Albert Hall in 2006 with the songs of Kurt Weill. In the same year, she sang the role of Bess in Porgy and Bess in both Umeå and Malmö in Sweden. In 2008, she was invited to give a series of masterclasses to students at UCLA. In 2009, she appeared with conductor Sir Simon Rattle and the Berlin Philharmonic in a series of televised concerts in Germany. In 2012, Malefane played the role of Venus in Isango's Venus and Adonis, which opened the Globe to Globe season at Shakespeare's Globe in London. The production re-ran in May 2013. She also played Noah in Unogumbe (2013) adapted from Benjamin Britten’s Noye’s Fludde and Zoleka in Breathe – Umphefumlo (2015). On Isango’s USA Tour in 2015, she once again played Carmen and sang Titania in the new adaptation of A Midsummer Night’s Dream. In 2016 Malefane created and played the roles of Yindy and Sadicya in A Man of Good Hope at London’s Young Vic and New York’s BAM.

Lungelo Ngamlana
Movement Design
Lungelo Ngamlana is an associate artist of Isango Ensemble. He joined the company in 2007 and has been the choreographer for all subsequent Isango Ensemble productions. His theatre credits include: The Magic Flute – Impempe Yomlingo, A Christmas Carol – iKrismas Kherol, The Mysteries – Yiimimangaliso, Aesop’s Fables, The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists – Izigwili Ezidlakazelayo, Venus and Adonis, La Bohème, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and Carmen. Prior to joining Isango Ensemble, Ngamlana worked as teacher, performer, and choreographer with many dance and theatre groups, both at home in South Africa and internationally.

Mannie Manim
Lighting Design
Mannie Manim is co-founder of the Market Theatre, and has been director of performing arts administration at the University of the Witwatersrand and director of the Baxter Theatre Centre. His career in theatre lighting and producing spans over 40 years and he has worked with Isango Ensemble since its first production more than 10 years ago. His accolades include: Chevalier des Artset des Lettres from the French Government, Naledi Life Achievement Award, Fleur du Cap Lifetime Achievement Award, Arts and Culture Trust Lifetime Achievement Award, and a Silver National Order of Ikhamanga.
萊斯利．諾特．瑪琳

Lesley Nott Manim
Speech and Dialogue Coach
Lesley Nott Manim has worked in professional theatre, film and television since 1975 as a performer and director, and vocal, acting, dialogue, text interpretation and accent coach, for both South African and international productions. Manim has taught text interpretation at the Market Theatre Laboratory, voice classes and tutorials at the University of Witwatersrand, and text interpretation, accent, and performance skills at AFDA Cape Town. She has worked with Isango Ensemble since 2007 as speech, dialogue, and text interpretation coach.
